EDITOR'S NOTE

Share Mom's Memories I

wrote a few years back that May has become the year, then throw in Mother’s Day, a couple of birthdays and everyday life just to round out the craziness. How about you? Does the thought of busy days in May make your head spin? When kids come home with all that stuff that’s been in their desks or lockers, go through it all right away. Save any supplies that can be reused for next year, stick a few items in their memory boxes and get rid of the rest. My girls aren’t in the door five minutes before I’m going through the mountain of junk! Let’s not allow the busyness to get in the way of remembering that important day in May when we pause to focus on moms! My husband gave me a card recently that read, “A beautiful family, a comfortable home and a wonderful woman at the heart of it all.” That sums up perfectly a mom’s role: She is the heart of the home. Be sure to tell your mom how much she means to you, and be sure to enjoy being spoiled on your special day, moms! Happy Mother’s Day, end of school and all things in between!

style THE OILY SKIN A serum is an everyday care product for the skin on your face. It could be a gel, a cream, or an aqueous suspension. It contains a higher concentration of active ingredients than regular care products which is why it’s used for solving very specific problems like acne, the first signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, and other things.

STYLE What types of serums are there? Anti-age serums are supposed to fight the first signs of aging. They renew the skin and stimulate the production of collagen — the protein that keeps the skin elastic. These serums usually contain retinol, vitamin C, and peptides. Antioxidant serums fight free radicals that are one of the reasons for aging. The main antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E, which are often included in these serums. Hydrating serums hydrate the skin and prevent it from drying out. Most of the time, these serums keep the water on the skin’s surface. This type of serum contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, or squalane. Serums for sensitive skin have components in them that fight acne (salicylic acid) and niacinamide to soothe irritated skin. Serums with AHA-acids peel and renew the skin. They even out the skin tone, smooth it, prevent the appearance of wrinkles, and help fight acne and pigmentation. How to choose a serum? Ideally, you should consult a specialist. A good cosmetologist will tell you which ingredients your skin needs and what you should consider when choosing a serum, like: Skin type. People with dry skin, for example, should be careful with serums containing acids and retinol. They might dry the skin and irritate it. Allergic reactions. Maybe, in the past, you had an allergic reaction to certain components. Try avoiding these. Your current condition. Choose a serum based on the condition of your skin today. If you have several problems, you should look at the serums that solve all of them. For example, salicylic acid treats acne and exfoliates the skin. And vitamin C fights pigmentation, protects the skin from free radicals, and prevents the appearance of wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen. When to use a serum? After washing and before using cream. The best sequence is this: 1. Cleaning product (foam, gel, lotion, or micellar water) 2. Serum 3. Eye skin cream 4. Regular face cream 5. Sunscreen (if needed) Also, there are some basic rules: Antioxidant serums are used in the morning. It helps to protect the skin from the bad influence of the environment and free radicals. Anti-aging serums are used before sleep. At night, the process of renewing the skin happens faster. Hydrating serums can be used twice a day to keep the skin as hydrated as possible.

Can a serum replace a regular cream? Not really. Serums and creams have a different effect on the skin. Serums are lighter than hydrating creams so they get absorbed fast and get into the skin deeper. They are not supposed to replace hydrating creams but they can be used to enhance their effects. For example, if it’s a serum with hyaluronic acid. Hydrating creams are thicker than serums. They are supposed to hydrate the skin and prevent the moisture from disappearing. Some creams have active ingredients in them but if you need to solve some really serious problems, it’s better to combine them with a good serum.

OUR RECOMMENDED PICKS Philosophy When Hope is Not Enough Hydrating Antioxidant Serum 30ml $56.00 Shoppersdrugmart.ca Vichy - Liftactiv Serum 10 Supreme 30 Ml $43.61. belenik.com Clarins Double Serum 75 Ml $168.00. Sephora Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum 1.7 oz/ 50 mL $174.00. Sephora

How to use a serum correctly? Put the serum in a thin layer and wait for it to get absorbed. Before using it, read the instructions on the pack. It usually describes the exact way to apply the serum, and also whether you need a break between when you use a serum or a cream.

14

MAY 2019

When to expect results? Serums have a high concentration of active ingredients which is why the effect is visible earlier than when using a regular cream. But it all depends on the type of serum. Ideally, if you want to see results, you will need to use a serum for 4-6 weeks. What else is important to know? If you are using several serums, it’s better to use the light ones at first and then the more serious ones. You should also know that the first serum you apply will work better than the next one. This is something you should also consider. A buffer layer made of a different product could help if the active ingredient is really irritating for your skin. Before the first use, test a little bit of the product on your elbow to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.

ROSES ARE BLOOM Rose water is a concentrated distillate prepared from a variety of roses called Rosa gallica or French rose. It has several cosmetic uses because of its beneficial properties. It can be used for facial care, to reduce acne, and to prevent the early appearance of expression lines, among other benefits. And the best thing is that it can be easily made at home.

16

MAY 2019

STYLE

What you’ll need 1 lb of rose petals (depending on the size of the flowers, this should be between 12 and 20 roses) 2 cups of distilled water A pot with a lid A glass container and its lid A sieve A spray bottle Instructions 1. If you bought the roses, you’ll have to pluck the petals and wash them thoroughly. If you can choose, it’s better to buy red or pink roses, because their natural scent is better. 2. Place the 2 cups of distilled water in a pot and add the rose petals. 3. Set the stove to high heat and bring the water to a boil. Once that happens, turn down the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the petals have lost their color. The steam should be kept within the pot, so it’s important to not uncover it during the process. 4. Take the pot off the fire and let it sit for about one hour. 5. . Strain the infusion you obtained. To preserve it, close the bottle and store it in the refrigerator. Bonus: How to use rose water Due to its antioxidant properties, it can be used to strengthen skin cells and regenerate tissues, and also as an anti-aging product. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps reduce eye bags, acne, dermatitis, and excess oil on the skin.

home HOW TO REMOVE BAD SMELLS IN A FRIDGE Every time you spill something in your fridge, try to clean it up right away. It’s recommended to do some light cleaning every week and deep cleaning once every 3 months. And of course, if you notice a bad smell, it’s probably time to clean the fridge.

21

MAY 2019

HOME

CLEANING THE FRIDGE 1. Turn the fridge off. 2. Take out all the food and throw away any old food. 3. Remove all the shelves and trays. 4. Wash the inside of the fridge and freezer with a sponge. You can use some special detergents or one of the following solutions: Mix fresh lemon juice with water (1:2). You can also use lemon skin. Mix vinegar and water (1:1). When you wash the fridge, don’t forget to remove the vinegar with pure water. Mix 1 liter of water with 2 tbsp of baking soda. Also, don’t forget to remove the vinegar with pure water. After all the procedures, keep the fridge door open for about 15 minutes to let the air circulate and get the remains of the smell out.

USING ODOR ABSORBENTS If there’s still an odor in the fridge after you wash it, you can use certain absorbents. What you choose depends on what you prefer. The absorbents are put into small containers if the bad smell isn’t too strong. However, if the bad smell is really strong, put the absorbent product right on the shelf/ What you can use: 1. Lemons 2. Brown bread 3. Teabags 4. Ground coffee 5. Ground activated carbon 6. It should take about 24 hours to remove the smell. If it’s not enough, replace the odor absorbents and put them in the fridge for 24 more hours. Tip: To prevent the appearance of bad odors, use ground activated carbon. Take a kinder surprise egg and pierce it in several spots. Put the carbon inside. Replace the carbon once a week.

FLOWERS LAST LONGER Fresh flowers can bring color and life to a room, but unfortunately, most of them don’t last very long.

24

MAY 2019

HOME

Step 1. Prepare the vase.

Step 2. Prepare the water.

Step 3. Make your own flower food.

✅ Take your vase and wash it thoroughly with a small capful of bleach and hot water together with a sponge to disinfect it. ✅ Regular soap will also do, but bleach will kill the bacteria better.

✅ Look at the stems of your flowers. Woody stems (like roses) prefer a deep drink, so you should fill the vase up two-thirds of the way with tap water. Softer stems (like tulips) prefer a more shallow drink, so you should fill the vase about halfway with tap water. ✅ Once you’ve filled the vase with tap water, leave it for a while to let the air bubbles escape and for the water to reach room temperature. ⛔ If you put your flowers in the vase immediately, air bubbles might get stuck in the bottom of the stems and interfere with proper water uptake.

✅ Mix 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of clear unscented bleach, and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice together with 1/4 cup of warm water. ✅ Stir the mixture until it’s fully dissolved. ✅ Add the mixture to your vase. ✅ These ingredients will nourish your flowers, kill harmful bacteria, and help the stems soak up water better.

⛔ Don’t dry your vase with a towel. ✅ Instead, place the vase upside down and let it dry naturally. This will prevent bacteria growth on the inside of the vase.

Step 4. Prepare the stems.

Step 5. Choose the location.

Step 6. Take care of the flowers.

✅ Place your flowers next to the vase to measure how much of the stems need to be cut. ✅ Take sharp scissors or a sharp kitchen knife and cut about 1-2 inches off the end of each stem at a 45-degree angle to help the stems take in water more easily. ⛔ Don’t use dull scissors as they could crush the stems. ✅ Remove all the extra leaves that fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth. ✅ Place the cut ends into some water as soon as possible. Otherwise, the stems will suck on the air, which will clog them and prevent water uptake.

⛔ Don’t place your flowers near any sources of heat such as household appliances and radiators, direct sunlight, on windowsills, or near open windows. ⛔ Keep your flowers away from fruits like tomatoes, bananas, and apples since they produce high levels of ethylene. This gas might influence ethylene production in your flowers and make them wilt faster. ✅ Instead, choose a cool, draft-free area for your flowers.

✅ Change the water and clean the vase every few days. ✅ When changing the water, always re-trim the stems of your flowers and remove all dead leaves and petals. ✅ To keep your flowers alive for longer, place them in the fridge overnight, then put them on display again in the morning. The cold temperature in your fridge will help to preserve them better.

WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth are in the very back of your mouth and serve as 2 additional pairs of molars on the upper and lower jaw. They usually grow when people are anywhere from 17 to 21 years old. This is why they are called wisdom teeth. ❗The information in this article is strictly educational. To find out if you have problems with wisdom teeth, we recommend seeing a dentist.

32

MAY 2019

HEALTH If all people have wisdom teeth

Why wisdom teeth are removed

Teeth start developing in the fetus and are already in the body when a child is born. First, 20 primary “baby” teeth appear and fall out before 32 adult teeth grow in. The first adult teeth appear between the age of 6 and 7, the next, before the age of 14; and then the wisdom teeth appear before the age of 21. Ancient humans needed wisdom teeth to chew on very hard foods. They ate roots, leaves, meat, and nuts. Today, food is cooked, and then it’s cut with cutlery. This is why we don’t need wisdom teeth anymore, so some people might not have them at all. But the genetic program still gives most people wisdom teeth. 53.9 % of adult people have at least 1 wisdom tooth.

Over time, our jaws have become smaller. This is because of diet and anatomy changes. As a result, modern people are often in a situation when they have wisdom teeth but not enough room for them to grow, so they remain in the gums. Such teeth lead to different issues: 🟢 They grow at different angles in the jaw, sometimes horizontally, and push on the neighboring teeth. 🟢 They move other teeth, which leads to pain and bite problems. 🟢 They get stuck in the jaw, which leads to infections and the damaging of other teeth and bone tissue. 🟢 They grow and affect the nasal passages and cause pain, pressure, and nasal congestion. In some situations, wisdom teeth might appear out from the gum only partially. This creates a space under the gums where bacteria will appear and lead to cavities. This makes the process of cleaning the mouth really difficult. It’s better to consult a dentist to decide whether you need to get your wisdom teeth removed. How to identify problems with wisdom teeth Visit a dentist. They will examine your mouth and take an Xray to see if you have hidden wisdom teeth and if they press on other teeth. Very often, teenagers are recommended to get wisdom teeth removed before the root system and bone structure are fully formed. This helps avoid potential problems before they even appear. Also, before you get braces, you might need to get wisdom teeth removed because they might grow later and ruin your bite. But most problems that wisdom teeth cause appear at the age of 15 to 25. Few people over 30 have problems that require getting wisdom teeth removed. If you can avoid getting wisdom teeth removed Wisdom teeth don’t need to be removed if they are the following: ✅ Completely healthy ✅ Fully grown through the gums ✅ Located correctly ✅ Don’t affect your bite ✅ Can be reached with a toothbrush and floss In such cases, wisdom teeth perform regular functions and don’t need to be removed.

How to Start Investing

Investing, especially in the stock market, can seem like something that is too complex to do independently. In reality, everyone can figure it out, you just need to carefully study the details.

1. Setting a goal Any investment should have a goal. Without it, you risk to spend your savings on the first thing you like. Here are some examples of goals that you can choose for your future investments: a big purchase (an apartment, a house, a car, or appliances) a big project (renovation, relocation to another city or country) travel or vacations education passive income retirement

41

MAY 2019

2. Get rid of big debts If you have loans with an interest rate higher than the estimated return on investment, close them first. Otherwise, you will remain in the red, because the interest on debt will be higher than the capital gain from your investments. 3. Build up an emergency fund Emergency funds are designed for emergencies, like job loss, sudden health problems, breakage of big appliances, etc. Having a fully stocked emergency fund in an accessible savings account is a huge financial priority. You want to have 3 to 6 months’ worth of living expenses tucked away. Emergencies happen all the time, and having the capital to deal with them is a necessity. Investing without an emergency fund is risky. You could end up having to sell your assets at the first emergency. This way, you could lose part of their value if the assets drop in price at the time of sale.

4. Choose your investment tool Cash. This also includes cash equivalents. Cash is considered the safest investment because its value is usually steady, even when taking into account inflation. For an easy way to expand your cash reserves, invest in an interest-paying savings account. Real Estate. Investors usually buy it for resale or rent. Reselling allows you to profit from the difference between buy and sell prices, while renting becomes your regular income. However, you should bear in mind that investing in real estate requires significant time expenditures and a large initial capital. Other physical assets. These are automobiles, works of art, collectibles, gemstones, and precious metals. Stocks. If you buy a company’s stock, you become a part-owner and you’ll generally make money if the company does well—or lose money if it doesn’t. Stock prices can rise or fall. This way, the financial result of the investment will be the difference between the buy and sell stock prices. Besides, the company can share part of their profits and pay dividends to shareholders. Bonds. When you buy a bond, you lend your money to the government, corporation, or private company that issued this security. The market price for bonds changes in the same way as for stocks, so the investor can make money on the difference between the buy and sell prices. Besides, the issuer of the bond pays interest at the rate specified in the securities prospectus. Usually, this happens twice a year. Funds. These are private companies that put together ready-made portfolios of securities: stocks, bonds, etc. When buying part of the fund, you acquire a piece of the investment portfolio in the hopes of increasing its total value. Funds can help you build a balanced portfolio of securities without having to buy each one individually and monitor price movements. You’ll have to open a brokerage account to invest in the latter 3 assets.

42

MAY 2019

5. Study the chosen investment tool Each investment tool has its advantages. Study them before you start investing. You can choose one of the following sources of information: Web portals for beginners in investing Books and textbooks (for example, Benjamin Graham’s bestseller The Intelligent Investor) Online courses from the biggest brokers or web portals (such as, edX or Coursera) Podcasts about investing Finance sites that will help you follow the latest news of the financial world 6. Find the difference between investing and speculating An investment is an asset or item acquired with the goal of generating income or appreciation in the future. Speculation is a financial transaction that has a substantial risk of losing all value, but with the expectation of a significant gain. An investment is characterized by: long-term time horizon moderate level of risk decisions that are based on fundamental and basic factors Speculation is characterized by: a short timeline between the buy and sell of your asset high level of risk decisions that are based on technical charts (e.g. stock charts), market psychology, and individual opinion Speculation carries a high risk of losing your capital, so you should be careful with it and not confuse it with investment.

7. Make a plan and start investing Define your budget. Calculate what amount you feel comfortable allocating for investments. This can be a one-time payment (for example, if you want to invest your savings) or a monthly one. If you choose a monthly payment, it’s recommended to allocate up to 20% of your monthly earnings for investments. If this seems a lot, save as much as you feel comfortable, and increase the amount over time. Set the deadline. Determine the period for your investments. It should depend on your goal. Some goals are long-term (such as a house or retirement), others are short-term (like travel and renovation). Determine the level of your participation in the investment. Define how actively you want to take part in building your portfolio. Investors are divided into active (they choose investment tools themselves, actively monitor the movements of prices, and devote a lot of time to the process) and passive (they prefer to invest in funds where a ready-made portfolio has already been built). Figure out the level of risk you are comfortable with. It’s important to remember that investing is still risky. Therefore, you should invest money that you won’t need within a few months. Also, determine what the minimal level of portfolio drawdown you are ready to accept is. Depending on the level of risk, choose more conservative investment tools (deposits, bonds) for your portfolio or, conversely, aggressive ones (stocks).

Do your math! Long division is one of the arithmetic basics. It is used when you need to divide multidigit numbers. This algorithm helps to split the calculation into a few simple steps.

Division components The dividend is a number that we divide. The divisor is a number by which another number is to be divided. The quotient is the result of the division.

45

MAY 2019

How to do long division with remainders 1. Write down the dividend on the left and the divisor on the right. Draw a vertical line between them and a horizontal line under the divisor. 2. Start dividing 1,234 by 5. First, compare the numbers of the dividend and the divisor. The first digit in the dividend is 1. 1 is smaller than 5, so you need to take one more digit from the dividend. 3. Compare 12 and 5. 12 is bigger than 5, so we can start dividing. 4. You can’t divide 12 by 5, so you have to calculate how many fives there are in 12. Turn to the multiplication table. 5×2=10. This means that there are 2 fives inside 12. Write 2 under the divisor, and write 10 under 12, then draw a line under 10. Find the difference between these 2 numbers. 12—10=2. Write 2 under the line. 5. Write the next digit of the dividend next to 2. This is 3. 6. Repeat the approach described in step 4, and define how many divisors there are in the dividend, or how many fives there are in 23. 5×4=20. This means that there are 4 fives in the dividend. Write 4 under the divisor and 20 under 23, then draw a line. 23—20=3, so write 3 under the line. 7. Bring down the next digit of the dividend. It’s 4. 8. Repeat the previous steps. 5×6=30, 34—30=4. Write 6 under the divisor and 30 under 34, then draw a line. Write 4 under the line. Since there no more digits in the dividend, you shouldn’t divide further. The answer is 1,234:5=246 (rem. 4).

Long division without remainders 1. Let’s do long division without remainders and use the same example, 1,234:5=? Steps 1 to 7 should be repeated. Let’s start from step 8. 2. 8. Repeat the previous steps. 5×6=30, 34—30=4. Write 6 under the divisor. Write 30 under 34 and draw a line. Write 4 under the line. There no more digits in the dividend, but since we are doing division without remainders, this not the final answer yet. 3. 9. Since there are no more digits in the dividend, put a dot in the quotient. Write 0 next to 4. 4. 10. Now divide 40 by 5. As usual, you need to calculate how many fives there are in 40. 5×8=40, 40—40=0. Write 8 after the dot in the quotient. This is the final answer: 1,234:5=246.8.

47

MAY 2019

In different countries, long division is written down in different ways. In USA and the UK, for example, you have to write the dividend to the right of the divisor, while the quotient is written under the dividend.

48

In Germany, they write down long division as a normal equation. The calculation is done in a similar way, but it requires an explanation.

In the Netherlands, the process of calculation is no different from the previous options, but it’s written down in a different way. The divisor is put to the left of the dividend, while the quotient is put to the right.

FOOD

FRIED DOUGH 1 cup cooked noodles (you could use ramen or capellini) 1 egg 2 tbsp oil 2 tbsp tomato sauce (or sweet and sour sauce) 1. Place the cooked noodles in a food processor or blender, and break an egg in there. 2. Blend the ingredients until you get a paste-like consistency. 3. Bring water to a boil in a pot. When it’s finally boiling, with a spoon, take a little bit of the mixture and make a sort of ball. Then drop the balls, one at a time, into the boiling water to cook for a couple of minutes.

RAMEN NOODLES PIZZA 1½ cups cooked ramen noodles (or pasta) 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 egg 1 tbsp oil 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese ½ cup tomato paste (or pizza sauce from a can) 6-8 slices of salami (you could use pepperoni or mushrooms) 1. In a glass bowl, place the cooked noodles, Parmesan cheese, and raw egg. Mix all the ingredients well. 2. Grease a round mold with the oil, this will prevent the pasta from sticking. Mix until everything is well-combined. 3. Press the dough with a spatula or your hand so that it is evenly distributed. 4. Pour a cup of mozzarella cheese over the noodles, then pour the tomato paste and spread it over the entire surface. 5. Add slices of salami over the pasta or if you prefer a vegetarian dish, you could replace them with sliced mushrooms. Sprinkle with dried oregano to finish. 6. Bake at 350ºF (180°C) for 15 minutes. 7. Then remove it from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes before serving.

GREEN FETTUCCINE 1-2 purple cabbage leaves (chopped) ½ package of fettuccine noodles or thick rice noodles (250 g) 1 tbsp of baking soda Salt and spices to taste 1. In a pot, boil the chopped cabbage leaves; the more leaves you use, the more intense the blue-green color of the pasta will be. When the water takes on a bluish color, remove the leaves from the water. Add the baking soda. Stir well. 2. Add the pasta to the pot with salt and spices to taste. Cook according to the cooking time indicated on the package, approximately 6-9 minutes. 3. Then, when the noodles are cooked, remove and serve. 4. Pour lemon juice over the pasta before eating. Serve with vegetables and meats of your choice.

SWEET BASKETS

RAMEN SANDWICH

1 package instant ramen noodles (80-100 g) 1 tbsp white sugar 1 egg 1 tbsp oil Whipped cream (for garnish) 4-6 chocolate sticks or filled wafers (optional)

1 package instant ramen noodles (80-100 g) 1 tsp oil 1 tsp rice vinegar 1 tsp soy sauce 1 tsp garlic powder 1 medium baguette or hot dog bun Cooked chicken and fish 1 boiled egg Nori seaweed (optional) Fresh chives (optional)

1. In a bowl, place the chopped noodles. Add the sugar and the egg. Mix all ingredients together. 2. Grease a muffin pan. Pour the batter into each space. With the help of a spoon, press the noodles to flatten them and make them take on the shape of the mold. Bake at 390ºF (200°C) for 5 minutes. 3. Then, remove them and unmold them one-by-one. You can use a spoon to lift them and avoid burning your fingers. 4. Serve and decorate as you wish. You can add whipped cream, dulce de leche, or condensed milk. Top them with chocolate chips or wafers.

1. Bring a pot of water to a boil, add the noodles, and let them cook for about 3 minutes depending on what the packaging says. 2. When they are cooked, transfer them to a frying pan and pour in the oil, vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic powder. 3. Mix well so that all the seasonings combine. If you like ginger, grate some over the noodles, or you can use ginger powder. Let them fry for at least a couple of minutes. 4. Slice the baguette or hot dog bun in half, just as you would when making a hot dog. Place the noodles first and then add a piece of chicken and a piece of cooked fish on top. Garnish the dish with fresh chives and, if you want, with a piece of nori seaweed.

SWEET TREATS FOR MOM A while ago, bouquets stopped being just beautiful compositions with flowers. Today they are made of fruits, berries, stuffed toys, sausages, and even baby diapers and socks. Nevertheless, the most universal bouquet is perhaps a bouquet made of sweets. It can be presented to a kid, to a friend, to a girlfriend, or even to a mother-in-law — and everyone will be happy.

CHOCOLATE BOUQUET 7 strawberries dipped in white chocolate 9 chocolate balls (milk chocolate) 3 chocolate candies filled with coconut 7 round chocolate candies 3 chocolate candies filled with mousse 4 small individually wrapped chocolates 4 chocolate bars with coconut 4 chocolate bars with nougat and caramel wooden skewers (as long as 10 inches) scissors paper cutter wide adhesive tape measuring tape or ruler twine glue gun narrow satin ribbon 2 types of wrapping paper thin rubber gloves (optional) 1. Remove the packaging from the sweets and put each of them on a skewer stick. Use 2 or 3 skewers for large chocolates and heavy sweets. An important note: The warmth of your hands can melt the chocolate quickly, so if possible, try to work in a cool place, away from heating appliances (you can open a window if necessary). In order to avoid leaving your fingerprints on the sweets, we suggest that you work using thin rubber gloves. 2. The sweets for the bouquet will be laid out in rows. Start arranging the first row by using 5 different chocolate candies. Place them next to each other so that they touch each other slightly and secure this bunch with a piece of adhesive tape. An important note: Chocolates can be very fragile, so it is better to not move the bouquet if it’s not necessary. Place the bouquet at the edge of the table for convenience and wrap the ends of the skewers with the adhesive tape in this position. 3. Place the second row of sweets over the first row. Position them a bit below the first ones. Use various sweets to add dynamism to the composition. Secure it with adhesive tape. 4. Place the sweets from the third row a bit lower than the sweets from the second row. Move some sweets a bit forward to create volume in the bouquet. Use adhesive tape to secure. 5. Locate the fourth row of sweets even lower than the previous row. Add sweets to the big gaps in the composition that appeared between sweets. An important note: Place the skewers loosely, be mindful to not place the candies too close to each other. The tape itself should also not be too tight. 6. The small chocolates may not stick to the skewers well, so make sure to add them last. Place them in different rows chaotically and make sure to adjust them with adhesive tape. 7. Set the finished bouquet aside and get your wrapping paper. Choose which of the 2 colors will be the primary and which will be the secondary. Cut off one 15×15 inch piece, 2 12×15 inch pieces, and 4 8×8 inch pieces from the paper in the primary color (it’s striped paper in our example). Cut off 2 8×15 inch pieces and 2 8×8 inches pieces from the secondary color paper (it’s the polka dot paper in our example). Additionally, you can cut out 2 small 4×4 inch pieces from the second type of paper for additional decorations (optional).

8.Take the big piece of the main wrapping paper (15×15 inches) and place it so that it resembles a diamond. Slightly fold the bottom corner of the paper and cut it with scissors or a knife. After that, make a vertical cut about 4 inches in height in the place of the removed corner. Make sure that the cut goes all the way to the middle of the wrapping paper. 9.Carefully put the bouquet on the paper and bend the corners smoothly. Wrap the bouquet (with the paper) around its stem part and secure with adhesive tape. 10.Take the 2 12×15 inch pieces. Fold each one in half along the short side and add them to the bouquet on the left and right sides. Secure with tape. 11.Make the same manipulations with the 8×15 inch pieces with the secondary color paper. Fold each one in half and add around the bouquet sides. 12.Fold the small 8×8 inch paper pieces in half diagonally and use them to cover the skewers sticking out of the bouquet. Adjust the paper and tie it with the twine. 13.Take the 8×8 inch pieces of the secondary color paper. Fold each of them in half and secure them on the sides of the bouquet leg. You can also add the 4×4 inch paper pieces from the right and left sides of the bouquet. Use a glue gun to secure them. 14.Take the remaining 2 pieces of the main 8×8 inch paper and fold them diagonally. Apply glue to the edges of each piece, and then attach them to the stem of the bouquet. An important note: It takes longer for the glue to stick together pieces of thick paper. Firmly press down on the edges of the paper for a few seconds so that they stick to each other properly. 15.Tie a small satin ribbon in a bow on the stem of the bouquet. 16.In order to help preserve the sweets in the bouquet better, you can pack it with a transparent film. To do that, fix the film with the help of a stapler along the bottom edge of the bouquet, decorate the stem with the ribbon, fanfold the upper edge, and adjust it with the ribbon as well.

MARSHMALLOW BOUQUET big package of marshmallows medium package of colored marshmallows 1/2 pack of round glazed mini-marshmallows 1/2 pack of colorful spiral marshmallows paper cutter scissors narrow and wide adhesive tape wooden skewers (about 12 inches long) glue gun twine 2 types of narrow satin ribbon 2 types of wrapping paper additional decorations (in our example we are using stars) 1. Put the big marshmallows on the skewers edges. 2. Take one marshmallow and place 5–6 pieces around it so that they resemble flower petals, in shape. Secure with adhesive tape. Set the rest aside. 3. Place the colored marshmallows on skewers too. 4. Add some colored marshmallows to the base of the bouquet. Place them in between the large marshmallows. Secure the skewers with the narrow adhesive tape. 5. Arrange the skewers in a spiral and secure with tape so that the position of the sweets doesn’t change. 6. Make a new circle of large marshmallows around the colored marshmallows, also arranging the skewers in a spiral. Secure with adhesive tape. 7. Place the spiral-shaped marshmallows on skewers. 8. Arrange the marshmallow spirals in a circle, adding them in between the large marshmallows. Secure with tape. 9. Make another circle of large marshmallows, adding them around the perimeter of the bouquet. 10. Glue decorative elements to the skewers with the help of a glue gun. 11. Place several semicircular soft glazed marshmallows on double skewers. Be careful, make it smooth because soft glazed marshmallows can start to crumble. 12. Place the semicircular marshmallows around the bouquet. Place the skewers with decorative elements in the bouquet in a random way. 13. Put the bouquet aside and get the wrapping paper. Cut out 3 12×24 inch pieces from the paper in each color. 14. Fold each piece in half along the short side slightly unevenly so that the edges don’t line up together. Then fold the paper in half diagonally on the long side. 15. Do the same thing with each of the 6 pieces of paper. If you want, you can secure the bends with a stapler or with double-sided tape. 16. Take one of the folded pieces of paper and wrap it around the bouquet, securing it with tape. Repeat the action with other pieces of the same color, placing them in a circle one after the other. 17. Take pieces of paper that are a different color and wrap the bouquet with them one by one in a circle. Secure the paper with tape. 18. Measure and cut 2 more 12×12 inch pieces of paper. Choose the color that you have on the outside part of the bouquet. 19. Fold each piece in half along the short side and wrap them around the stem of the bouquet. Secure the stem with wide adhesive tape. 20. Tie a satin ribbon at the base of the bouquet’s stem. You can use ribbons that are different colors and tie them one over the other. An important note: Marshmallows dry relatively quickly, so make sure to not keep this bouquet for a long time.

TIPS & TRICKS

HOW TO STORE NUTS AND DRIED FRUITS It seems that storing nuts and dried fruit is an easy task — you can just put them on the shelf and take them whenever you need them. However, if you want to keep these foods tasty, you need to take the temperatures into account as well as some other conditions.

HOW TO STORE NUTS The taste and texture of nuts are affected by air, temperature, and sunlight. When it’s too humid, nuts become soft, which influences the shape. The air may oxidize the products and have a negative effect on the taste qualities. The sunlight dries nuts from the inside and outside.

HOW LONG YOU CAN STORE NUTS AND DRIED FRUIT FOR After opening the pack, nuts and dried fruit can be stored for a year. The general rules are as follows: Raw, non-peeled nuts — 6 months to 1 year Peeled nuts — 3 to 4 months Dried fruit — 3 to 6 months

Obviously, the best way to store nuts is to keep them in a dry, dark place with minimal air access. The fridge is the ideal place for them. Put the nuts in a plastic or glass container, cover them with a lid, and put them on a shelf in your fridge that’s far from the freezer. Additionally, don’t put the nuts next to foods with a strong smell, such as onions or garlic. HOW TO STORE RAISINS, DRIED APRICOTS, AND OTHER DRIED FRUIT These storing rules are very similar the ones you follow for nuts. The general recommendations are as follows: 1. Check the dried fruit and separate the bad and old ones from the good ones. 2. Wash the dried fruit in tap water. 3. Dry them by putting them on a cloth towel or paper towel. 4. Place them in a plastic container, cover them with a lid, and put them into the fridge, far away from the freezer.
