EDITOR'S NOTE
Fall Harvests M
y children have so much to look forward to, they’re itching for fall to begin: friends they’ve missed, sports to practice, the newfound freedoms that come with early adolescence. But for me, summer ended all too quickly—weren’t we just unpacking eight weeks of stuff and overtaking the grandparents’ cottage with our everpresent chaos? Is it age that speeds up time? I’d just gotten my groove, relaxed into the “no-schedule schedule,” and suddenly it was time to pack it all up again, cross the bridge and come home. Goodbye til next year, Cape Cod. You’re a beauty. Thankfully, what’s waiting for me on the other side of summer is the best eating season of all. In early autumn the hot weather crops I wait all year for—like tomatoes, corn and eggplant—are at their absolute peak right as the fall harvest begins. I love this overlapping season, zucchini and winter squash displayed simultaneously at the farm. In a few weeks the air will crisp up, leaves will change and my thoughts will turn to preserving this bounty—apples and cabbage and squash taking space in the root cellar or crisper, ready to cook when the weather turns cold. This is New England food at its finest, and it’s my favorite time of year to cook.

STYLE WASH YOUR FACE PROPERLY. ✅ Wash your face 2 times a day (when you wake up and before going to bed) and every time after you sweat. ⛔ Don’t cleanse your skin more often, as this can irritate it and make acne worse. ✅ Use your fingertips to gently massage the cleanser into your skin and then rinse it off with warm water. ✅ Choose a gentle cleanser, preferably the one that contains ingredients like salicylic or glycolic acid or probiotics. ⛔ Don’t use harsh cleansing agents or abrasive washcloths. ⛔ Never sleep with your makeup on.
MAKE YOUR OWN SPOT TREATMENT. ✅ Make a mixture of 2% salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and 1% hydrocortisone cream by putting a drop of all 3 in the palm of your hand. Then apply it directly to the affected area to kill acne-causing bacteria, open pimples, remove oil, and quicken the healing process.
STOP TOUCHING YOUR FACE. ✅ Keep your hands away from your chin and jawline. The less you touch your face, the sooner it will heal. ⛔ Don’t pick or pop your pimples, as this can spread bacteria, slow down the healing process, and lead to scars.
CUT OUT DAIRY. ✅ Exclude dairy products from your diet because they can affect your hormonal balance and cause skin inflammation.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SKIN CARE ROUTINE. ✅ Moisturize your skin regularly to prevent it from drying out. ✅ Exfoliate your skin with a gentle exfoliant containing salicylic or lactic acid about 2-3 times a week. ⛔ Don’t scrub your chin because this can irritate acne. ✅ Wear an oil-free sunscreen every day. ⛔ Avoid skincare products that contain oils because they can clog your pores. Look for terms like “non-comedogenic” or “non-acnegenic” on the labels.
APPLY ICE. ✅ Apply ice wrapped in a clean cloth to the affected area for about 5 minutes, using very little pressure. This will help you to reduce redness and pain.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR HAIR. ✅ Keep your hair away from your chin and jawline. ✅ Wash your hair frequently to prevent oil on your scalp and hair from making its way onto your face and triggering breakouts.
KEEP YOUR SHEETS CLEAN. ✅ Change your sheets every week and your pillowcases 2-3 times a week. This will prevent dead skin cells, bacteria, and dirt that have collected on these surfaces from clogging the pores on your face.

HOME OPTION #1: GET PLANTS
OPTION #2: PLACE BOWLS WITH WATER ALL AROUND YOUR HOME
Plants need water. They absorb it with their roots through the soil, but not all of it — a part of the water goes back to the air by evaporating through the leaves and enriches the air with humidity. The more plants you have at home and the more frequently they require watering, the higher the overall humidity of the air in the room is.
Take several decorative bowls, pour water into them, and place them in different parts of your apartment. You can put a few flower petals on the surface as a decoration. Over time, the water will slowly evaporate and humidify the air. Placing bowls in a sunny spot or near a hot radiator can help speed up the evaporation process. You can also pour freshly boiled water into the bowls. This will instantly increase the humidity in the apartment due to the hot steam. Make sure to not burn yourself.
OPTION # 3: OPEN THE DOOR TO THE BATHROOM Keep the door to the bathroom open, especially when you are taking a hot bath or shower. In this case, steam from bathing will seep into neighboring rooms and increase the humidity of the air.
OPTION # 4: DRY CLOTHES INSIDE Refuse to use your dryer or hang your clothes outside on the balcony. Instead, hang your clothes on a laundry rack and place them inside. As the clothes dry, they will evaporate the excess humidity and enrich the air with it.
OPTION # 5: SPRINKLE YOUR CURTAINS WITH WATER In between clothes drying you can try sprinkling your curtains with water. They will also evaporate excess moisture as they dry. However, make sure to not wet the curtains too much — the excess moisture can damage some types of fabrics or ruin the wall coverings. Also, keep in mind that you should sprinkle curtains only from the outer side — not from the side that faces the window.
OPTION #7: USE AIR HUMIDIFIER Using an automatic device is the easiest way to humidify the air in your home. The regular use of this device sustains humidity in the room at the optimal level. Use fresh filtered water for a humidifier. It will prevent the appearance of scale buildup and bacterial growth in the appliance reservoir. Most of the models are easy to use and only require a regular filling of the tank with water.

OCTOBER 2018
OPTION #6: INSTALL A FOUNTAIN OR AN AQUARIUM AT HOME Decorative fountains and aquariums evaporate water naturally. This method also has 2 bonuses: fountains and aquariums decorate the room, and also relax and normalize the work of the human nervous system.

health BABY STEPS Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for a baby’s brain development, but many parents face certain difficulties when it comes to putting their baby to bed at night. Some kids won’t stop crying while others can’t fall asleep without their parents being in the same room with them. Luckily, there are proven ways to help your baby fall asleep faster
31
OCTOBER 2018
HEALTH BASIC RULES Every method has its own special features, but there are some ground rules parents should follow: The perfect time to start to sleep train your baby when they’re 4 to 6 months old. Keep in mind that the older the baby is, the more likely it is that they’ve already developed certain sleeping habits and realized that their parents usually try to comfort them when they’re crying or that they don’t leave them alone at night. If the method you choose implies leaving your baby alone in the room, you must be sure that they’re feeling well. There should be no risk factors that may prevent the baby from falling asleep or that may hurt them in any way. Be prepared that the baby will likely protest your decision to try sleep training and embrace their crying as their way of showing you their attitude toward this idea. You’re likely to see the first results after a week or 2 of training, but remember that every child has their own unique personality, so the time when they’ll be able to fall asleep on their own may vary. Have a look at the basics of 6 sleep training techniques and the explanation of how they work that will help you decide which method is right for your baby.
THE PICK UP, PUT DOWN METHOD You should put your baby to sleep and wait for the baby’s response. If the baby is calm, leave the room. When the baby starts to cry, you should wait for a couple of seconds and see if the baby is going to calm down and then go to the baby and pick them up to soothe them. As soon the baby becomes calm, you should put the baby back in the crib (it doesn’t matter if they are still awake) and give them an opportunity to fall asleep on their own.
“CRY IT OUT” METHOD
THE FERBER METHOD
You should put your baby to sleep and leave the room right away. Don’t enter the room no matter how loud the baby is crying. Your goal is to not comfort the baby and let them figure out how to soothe themselves and fall asleep on their own.
You should put your baby to sleep and leave the room right away. If a baby starts crying, you should wait for a little while (Ferber suggests starting with 3 minutes and gradually increase the time) and then go inside the room to soothe the child. You should gradually make the time intervals longer for when the baby is crying without you being in the same room. When you’re calming down the child: don’t take them out of the crib don’t feed them don’t turn the lights on don’t spend too much time comforting the child Just pat your child on the back or gently talk to them.
THE CHAIR METHOD You should put your baby to sleep and leave the room right away. If the baby starts crying, go back in the room and sit in a chair that’s located near the baby’s crib. Move this chair further away from the crib once every couple of days until it’s out of the room. Be consistent with moving your chair a bit further, so the baby understands that their behavior doesn’t really affect the situation. Try to be as boring as possible when you’re sitting in the chair to make the baby realize that this is not playtime and that they won’t get your attention no matter what they do. Note: This method doesn’t work on children who are stimulated by the presence of their parents, even if they don’t interact with them.
BEDTIME-HOUR FADING This method is based on the assumption that the baby won’t fall asleep until they really want to. So you should determine the time your baby usually falls asleep and turn it into the time you put the baby in the crib. For example, if you usually put your baby to sleep at 8 p.m., but they cry for an hour and actually don’t fall asleep until 9 p.m., you should put them in the crib at 9 p.m. Then, go back to the initial time by gradually moving the time you put the baby in the crib to an earlier one.
32
OCTOBER 2018
BEDTIMEROUTINE FADING You can use any method of your choice to calm down your baby and put them to sleep (like rocking, singing, or massage). Your goal is to gradually minimize the time you spend soothing your baby before nighttime, until you don’t have to do it at all.
HEALTH MISTAKE 1. PUTTING THE BABY TO SLEEP IN A WELL-LIT ROOM Darkness with no distractions calms down babies, and it promotes the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate sleep.
MISTAKE 2. NOT RECOGNIZING SIGNS THAT SHOW THE BABY IS TIRED If you want to make falling asleep easier, put the baby to bed when you notice the first signs of sleepiness, like when the baby starts clenching their fists, looking away from you, or rubbing their eyes and ears.
MISTAKE 3. LETTING YOUR BABY NAP FOR TOO LONG DURING THE DAY The toddler’s napping time shouldn’t exceed 3 hours per day, except for newborns. Of course, every child has different needs, but too much sleep during the daytime may interfere with their sleep schedule and make it more difficult for a baby to fall asleep at night.
MISTAKE 4. NOT HAVING A BEDTIME ROUTINE It’s important to come up with a bedtime routine and follow it every day. This way, your baby knows what’ll come next and this helps them to be more relaxed and prepared for falling asleep.

Celebrity Moments It's often believed that long-lasting relationships and friendships are almost impossible in Hollywood. Actors and singers have one thing in common: they're all creative personalities, and there is always an endless struggle for popularity.
Liv Tyler and Kate Hudson Kate and Liv have known each other since childhood thanks to their celebrity parents. They became super close after starring together in the movie Dr. T and the Women in 2000. Liv Tyler even became the godmother of Kate’s first child.
Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling These two handsome Hollywood guys have known each other for over 20 years. The actors met on the popular TV show The Mickey Mouse Club during the early 1990s. Gosling even used to live with Timberlake and his family because of some citizenship issues.
Cara Delevingne and Rihanna
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire
Pop diva Rihanna and supermodel Cara Delevingne became celebrity besties only a few years ago. The girls love to spend time together at parties, social events, and fashion shows. Due to her age and experience, Rihanna is kind of a career mentor for Cara and always supports her in the most crucial moments.
Tobey and Leo met 25 years ago when they used to go to auditions together. "After I met Tobey at an audition, I felt like I wanted this guy to be my friend. I jumped out of my car in the middle of the scene, as they were shooting practically. I was like, 'Tobey! Tobey! Tobey! Give me your number.' He was like, 'Yeah, who are you again?' " said Leo, recalling his first meeting with Tobey.

OCTOBER 2018
Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller These two talented Hollywood stars met on the set of the film The Edge of Love and since then their friendship has gone beyond the boundaries of the professional arena. The actresses can spend hours together shopping or sitting in a café. Sienna recently revealed that Keira is her beauty icon and described her as "the most beautiful woman."
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.
Kim Kardashian and Nicole Richie
As frequently happens, these actors met during the shooting of the film Air America in 1990 and quickly went from being onscreen pals to real-life buddies. Downey supported Mel Gibson in his scandalous divorce proceedings, and Gibson helped Robert recover from drug and alcohol addiction.
Kim and Nicole were among the brightest of Hollywood's “golden youth." Nicole is the daughter of legendary singer Lionel Richie, and Kim is a reality TV star. They became friends when they were 12 years old, and since then they have been best friends, despite periodic reports in social media about their arguments and quarrels.
Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato met on the show Barney & Friends when they were only 7. Though not everything went smoothly in the friendship of the two young ladies - they fell apart for a while because of some personal issues - they succeeded in overcoming all the difficulties and now their friendship is stronger than ever.
Robert Pattinson and Tom Sturridge Tom and Rob have been good friends since school (they got acquainted when they were 12 years old). Neither fame nor the rumors about a love triangle with Kristen Stewart could ruin the guys' friendship. Paparazzi often shoot the celebrities walking together in the park or sitting in a bar.
40
OCTOBER 2018
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds Though fans of these two actors really hoped that after starring in the film The Proposal (2009) Sandra and Ryan would tie the knot in real life, the celebrities announced that they were “just good friends.” Sandra is often present at Ryan's movie premieres to support her dear friend.
Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox We can safely say that the friendship of Jen and Courtney is one of the strongest and most sincere friendships in Hollywood. The ladies met on the set of the popular show Friends in 1994 and became real-life besties. Though the actresses have gone through many difficulties (Cox’s divorce from David Arquette and Aniston's divorce from Brad Pitt), they never cease to support and encourage each other in everything. In one of her interviews, Aniston revealed, “I’ve slept in her guest bedroom a lot. All I can say is she’s been there for me through thick and thin."
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio "Titanic" became a fateful movie not only for millions of its fans but for the leading actors as well. They've been good friends for more than 20 years and they're always there for each other. In 2012, when Kate secretly got married it was Leo who walked her down the aisle - a sign of trust that speaks for itself.

LEMON PIE Ingredients 1 cup of sour cream 1/2 cup of butter 1/2 tsp of baking soda 2 cups of flour 1.5 lemons 1 cup of sugar 1 yolk Powdered sugar 1. Mix the sour cream with the baking soda. Add some melted butter and stir until smooth. 2. Gradually add flour. 3. Knead the dough (it must be a bit sticky). 4. Split the dough into 2 equal parts. Wrap each part into the cling film and place it in the fridge for 1 hour or more. 5. Remove the peel from the lemons and remove the white skin from them as well — it will help your future pie from tasting too bitter. Chop the lemons into small pieces. 6. Whisk the lemons in the blender with 1 cup of sugar to make a liquid mass. 7. Roll one part of the dough and place it on the baking sheet (we used a sheet with a diameter of 12 inches). Spread the dough all over the baking sheet’s surface and make small sides. Put the lemon stuffing in and spread it evenly. 8. Roll out the second part of the dough and cover the stuffing with it. Brush the pie with whipped yolk to get a golden crust. 9. Bake the pie in a pre-heated oven set at 350°F for about 30 minutes. Sprinkle it with powdered sugar when it’s ready.

living WIRE PROBLEMS The cables we use daily to charge our laptop or smartphone get damaged frequently. We even tend to twist them to the point of wearing them out or handle them so much that their inner wires get exposed.

USE A STRAW OR A PLASTIC TUBE.
USE LIQUID GLUE.
HOW TO PREVENT CABLE WEAR
1. Cut a straw or a plastic tube along its length. Use the length you need. 2. Place it over the damaged area. 3. Attach the plastic to the cable and heat it up with a hairdryer on medium power. 4. You will notice that the plastic will shrink and stick tightly to the wire. If your cable has several cuts, repeat the process for each one. 5. To reinforce the affected area, you can braid a thread over it. 6. Make several knots, tying the thread over your cable, depending on the length you want to cover.
1. If a small area of the wire has been stripped, cover the entire space with hot melted glue or insulating tape. 2. Allow the glue to dry and solidify. This process is recommended for repairing places where cables tend to bend more when used constantly.
1. Detach the springs from 2 unused pens. 2. Coil a wire at each end of the cable. 3. Wrap a pencil with the cable, leaving the ends out. 4. Secure the ends with adhesive tape. 5. With the help of a hair dryer at medium power, heat the wire that is coiled over the pencil. Rotate it to heat the entire surface for a few minutes. 6. Remove the tape from the ends and take out the pencil. Your wire will look like a spring; this way, you will avoid the constant bending.

TIPS & TRICKS
THE MOST SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE REMEDY TO MAKE YOUR HEELS BABY SOFT Our hectic modern-day lifestyle makes it difficult to keep track of the condition of our feet. It hurts here, chafes there, and our shoes are too tight. Only at the end of a working day do we sometimes notice how scratchy the skin is and how many small cracks have formed on it. But this problem can be solved very quickly, easily, and, most importantly, cheaply.
WHAT YOU NEED 5 tbsp baking soda Shower gel Several drops of essential oil (lavender, orange, or lemon will suit)
HOW TO USE IT 1. Before starting the procedure, place your feet in hot water for 5 minutes. They need to be steamed to make the remedy more effective. 2. Mix the shower gel, essential oil, and baking soda to get a homogeneous paste. Then rub the resulting mixture into your feet, massaging them at the same time. 3. If the skin is too scratchy, use a brush or pumice to rub the mixture in. 4. At the end, wash the mixture away, and lubricate your feet with moisturizing сream. Baking soda isn't just a great remedy for hardened and rough foot skin - it also eliminates unpleasant odors, promotes rapid healing, and helps to fight fungal infections. The results become visible in two weeks.
