EDITOR'S NOTE
People like us W
hen we started paying regular attention to the good that people do, many things just magically made themselves clear to us. We saw that there are actually far more nice people out there than we might ever have imagined. That they come from all circumstances and backgrounds— middle-class couples, call-center agents, college students, religious adult males, rich single females, public school teachers, famous celebrities, visiting foreign nationals, young-folk-still-on allowance, and moms and dads. That having money in their hands is not what propels people to act on their causes or see them through. What does is a kind of quiet and slow enlightenment as much as a strong and sudden epiphany; a sensibility shaped by the years as much as a pressing sensitivity to something looming out there; an inner, solo journey to change as much as a change forged in the company of others. Coming to this magical clarity has made us, at 5MCM, feel even stronger that the one we must see as special. And why not? When good work is being done in so many places by so many, without thought of gain, without fear of using up precious time—there is hope, and hope becomes no longer just something we want to believe in It's already out there. As soon as you cross the Sierra, you drop down into this other world,” says Story, who has been taking his kids to view the fall color at June Lake for years. “Living in the Bay Area, with life getting faster and more complex all the time, Highway 395 for me is like island time in Hawaii.” Talking about this epic road, Story punctuates his speech with thoughtful pauses and poetic sighs. I could hear him relaxing at the memory. I asked Tom to design a perfect first day for me. His recommendation: “Drive to Yosemite and eat lunch in the piano bar at The Ahwahnee. Then head to June Lake, check in at the Double Eagle Resort, and go to Mono Lake at twilight to watch the colors of the sky and water change as the sun sets.” I swear I could be extremely good at all sorts of DIY projects, if I didn’t have a job, a family, dogs, or the need to eat. Then I would have all the time in the world to make amazing things out of other things that someone put out on the curb or that cost no more than $5 at Home Depot. I’m creative, right? I’m sure I could dream up a way to hack that Ikea dresser and turn it into, I don’t know, a flying car. Clearly I have issues with time management, as I know that there are countless busy people who still find room in the day for DIY. Even so, I have always regarded most DIY bloggers with suspicion and fear. If you can accomplish genius DIY projects and then actually blog about them, you must be either really sleep-deprived, annoyingly energetic, or a member of another species. And if you are a DIY blogger who also has a beautiful, useful, easy-tonavigate website—well, it takes all of my strength not to turn off my computer and play dead. But now I have to change my whole worldview. Because it’s bad karma to feel suspicious and afraid of two women who DIY a timeworn house into something spectacular, then donate it to charity

Coffee and honey mask The components in coffee help relieve puffiness, while honey is moisturizing and has antibacterial properties. Thanks to these ingredients, the complexion is left clean, soft, and glowing. 1. Mix 1 tablespoon of ground or instant coffee with 1 tablespoon of honey. You should end up with a homogeneous and thick paste. 2. Apply evenly to the entire face, avoiding the area around the eyes. 3. Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes. 4. Wipe your face with a damp towel.
Coffee and milk mask
Coffee and olive oil mask
With this mask made of coffee and milk, the complexion gets revitalized, moisturized, and softened. In addition, if applied by massaging it into the skin, it acts as a natural exfoliant by removing dead skin cells. 1. Form a paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of used ground coffee with 1 tablespoon of milk. If it is too thick or too liquid, add more milk or more coffee. 2. Spread the paste on your face, avoiding the eye area. As you apply the mask, gently massage your skin in circular motions. 3. Leave the mask on for approximately 20 minutes. 4. Then remove with warm water and apply your usual moisturizer.
Olive oil has moisturizing properties. These benefits, together with those of the coffee, give the facial skin firmness and hydration. It is also good for eliminating dark circles under the eyes, as it activates circulation in that area. 1. Mix equal amounts of olive oil and used coffee grounds to form a homogeneous, thick paste (1 tablespoon of each, for example). 2. Apply the mask evenly, massaging the skin gently. You can put a little on the dark circles under the eyes, being careful to not get it into your eyes. 3. Leave the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes. 4. Rinse your face with lukewarm water or a damp cloth.

FEEL TO HEEL
When the sensitive skin on the bottom of the feet and heels becomes too dry, it can split open, leaving painful cracks called fissures on your heels. Those cracks may not only make it painful to walk, but they can also lead to serious infections. It’s best to regularly get rid of the thickened skin on your feet to prevent cracks from appearing. You can do this at home using simple masks and footbaths containing easily available items, such as honey or vinegar.

STYLE A mask with ketchup and sugar Mix 8 to 10 tablespoons of ketchup or tomato paste and 2 to 3 tablespoons of sugar in a bowl. Take a plastic bag and pour half of the mixture into it. Put it on your foot and massage it so that the sugar can remove any dead skin. Then pull a warm sock over the bag. Apply the other half of the mixture in the same way to the other foot. After 10 minutes, remove the bags and rinse your feet with warm water. If necessary, rub your feet with a brush or pumice stone.
A mask with citric acid and honey Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of citric acid with the same amount of natural honey. Add aspirin. Then add 3.5 ounces of warm water to the mix and stir it well. Take a plastic bag and pour 1/2 of the mixture into it. Put it on your foot. Pull a warm sock over the bag. Apply the other half of the mixture in the same way to the other foot. Leave it for 15 minutes. Then remove the bags and use a dry brush to clean the skin of any mask residue. Rinse your feet with warm water. You’re all done!
An apple vinegar soak Pour 1 liter of warm water into a wash basin. Dilute around 500ml of apple vinegar in it. Remember, you should aim for 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar. Soak your feet in this bath for 10 to 15 minutes. Then scrub your heels with a soft brush. Use a pumice stone on the thickened skin. Rinse your feet with warm water.
A milk and honey soak Pour 1 liter of warm milk into a wash basin and put your feet in it. Apply 1 cup of natural honey to each foot, rubbing it into the thickened skin. Massage your feet and leave them in the basin for 10 to 15 minutes. Then rinse them with warm water.

STAIN OR NOT? Making white clothes shine again without spoiling the fabric is not an easy task. It is nearly impossible to whiten clothes made of wool and silk at home (at the very least, you’ll need special detergents). However, when it comes to cotton and synthetic products, you can use simple boiling — along with things like lemon, baking soda, and even... hairspray!
21
SEPTEMBER 2018
HOME PREPARATIONS
Read the fabric treatment guidelines on the clothing tag. Some fabrics may be damaged by contact with hot or warm water, while in other cases only dry cleaning is allowed. To restore whiteness to things made of delicate fabrics (like natural silk, wool, cashmere, nylon, microfiber, polyester, and lace), it is better to use special cleaning agents or take the clothes to a professional dry cleaner.
WHITENING THINGS WITH BOILING WATER AND BAKING SODA
Fill a large saucepan 3/4 of the way full with water, cover it with a lid, and place it over medium heat. Then add baking soda at a ratio of 2 tablespoons for every 4 liters of water and stir until the soda dissolves. Immerse the clothes in this solution so that they float freely in the pan. Leave on medium heat for 30-40 minutes.
HOW TO WHITEN CLOTHES USING LEMON
Here’s a universal option for whitening various materials: add half a cup of lemon juice or 1-2 sliced lemons to 4 liters of hot water. Stir the ingredients and soak your clothes in the mixture for at least an hour (in case of heavy staining, soak overnight). Afterward, don’t forget to wash your clothes as usual. Citric acid gently cleanses fabric and is suitable for regular use — just add 1 cup of lemon juice during a normal machine wash. To get rid of sweat stains, take half a lemon and rub it on the stain. Alternatively, mix lemon juice with water and apply the mixture to the fabric using a brush, while scrubbing away the dirt. Then wash as usual.
After that, remove the saucepan from the stove and let it cool. Take the clothes out and rinse them in warm water. Repeat the whole procedure if necessary.
HOW TO RETURN WHITENESS TO THINGS THAT WERE WASHED TOGETHER WITH CLOTHES OF OTHER COLORS.
Add grated household soap to a bowl of warm water at a ratio of 3.5 oz of soap per 5 liters of water. Stir thoroughly, then add a few crystals of potassium permanganate to make the water turn pink. Immerse the items in the solution and cover the bowl with a plastic bag. Leave for 4-5 hours. Following that, rinse and dry as usual.

HOW TO REMOVE LIPSTICK AND MARKER STAINS USING HAIRSPRAY
Apply hairspray to the stain, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then dab the area with a damp sponge, and let the fabric dry. This should get rid of the stain in no time at all! The brand and the price range of the hairspray aren’t important — what matters most is that the product contains alcohol, which removes traces of marker and lipstick! If the stain doesn’t come off the first time, try dabbing it with a swab soaked in medical alcohol before re-applying the hairspray.
REMOVING GREASE, GRASS, AND INK STAINS FROM A WHITE SHIRT
First, wet the stains liberally with warm water. Rub greasy stains with ordinary white chalk. To remove grass stains, pour a little vinegar over them. To get rid of ink traces, moisten the fabric with milk. Finally, thoroughly clean the stained areas with a brush and dry the fabric with a hairdryer!

SEPTEMBER 2018
HEALTH Step 1: Wet your hands with running water. Tip: ✅ Avoid hot water as it might promote chapping and make your hands more susceptible to bacteria. Step 2: Apply enough soap to cover the entire surface of your hands. Tip: ✅ You can use either antibacterial soap or regular soap, they’re both effective at killing germs. Step 3: Lather soap by rubbing your hands, palm to palm, in a circular motion. Tip: ✅ Turn off the tap when lathering to prevent germs from falling from it onto your hands.
Step 7: Rub your thumb using your opposite hand. Do the same with the other thumb. Step 8: Rub your fingertips on the palm of your hands in a circular movement, paying close attention to the areas underneath your nails. Step 9: Rub your wrist with the opposite hand in a circular motion. Do the same with the other hand. Tip: ✅ The entire process of washing the hands should take about as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday,” twice. Step 10: Turn on the tap and rinse your hands under running water.
Step 4: Rub the back of each hand with the palm of the opposite hand.
Step 11: Dry your hands and wrists with a clean paper towel.
Step 5: Rub between your fingers with your hands clasped palm to palm and your fingers interlaced.
Step 12: Turn off the tap using another paper towel. Your hands are now clean!
Step 6: Rub the backs of your fingers in opposing palms with your fingers interlocked.

WATERPIK TIPS A Waterpik is an alternative to regular dental floss. This device is used to remove the remains of food and bacteria from between the teeth before it all turns into plaque.
38
SEPTEMBER 2018
HEALTH WHAT A WATERPIK LOOKS LIKE A Waterpik is a device that sprays water. The power of the stream can be controlled with a special button on the device. A typical Waterpik has: a water tank (200-800 ml) on/off button stream power button a handle and a nozzle Additionally, there might be a nozzle box to store all the different nozzles. There are portable Waterpiks (cordless) and stationary (those than require a power outlet). The portables ones have smaller water tanks which makes them great for traveling. The stationary ones have bigger water tanks so you don’t have to fill the tank while flossing. But stationary Waterpiks need power, so they are not the best choice for traveling.
HOW TO USE A WATERPIK 1. Fill the water tank with warm filtered water, put on your individual nozzles, and set the necessary power of the stream. 2. Bend over the sink and put the device into your mouth. Close your mouth a little to prevent the water from splashing everywhere. Turn on the device, aim the tip at the gums, and, moving from tooth to tooth, clean plaque and food from the spaces in between your teeth. 3. Use the Waterpik for at least 2 minutes. After that, turn it off, remove your nozzle, and wash it with water.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF WATERPIKS Advantages of Waterpiks: Compared to regular dental floss, Waterpiks are better at cleaning the spaces between teeth if there are braces, or if you have nonremovable bridgework, crowns, or dental implants. They are easy to use and they don’t require any special skills. They are better at cleaning the spaces that are hard to reach. They don’t damage your gums during cleaning. Disadvantages of Waterpiks: They don’t always remove all the plaque. They are more expensive than dental floss. Water splashes a lot which might get on your clothes and other nearby surfaces.
WHEN TO USE A WATERPIK Just like dental floss, Waterpiks are used at least once a day before the morning or evening teeth brushing. Also, you can use a Waterpik to floss your teeth every time pieces of food get stuck between them. However, when you are at work, on vacation, or in a restaurant, it’s not always convenient to use a Waterpik. In these cases, we recommend using dental floss as usual and a Waterpik when you are at home.

Cityscape Getaway
You’ll find that the European skyscrapers are concentrated in mostly 5 cities — Paris, Moscow, London, Frankfurt, and Istanbul. That’s because, generally, they’re not even built.
44
SEPTEMBER 2018
Why Europe doesn’t build many skyscrapers 1. There was no space for them. Most European cities were already well established by the time skyscrapers came around. Because of this, there was little to no room to build larger and newer structures. 2. Skyscrapers would ruin European cities’ cultural heritage. In the 1960s, a lot of buildings in Brussels were destroyed to make way for taller, newer buildings. This indiscriminate redevelopment was damaging since the destroyed buildings were important to maintain the cultural heritage of the city. Architects and other important figures called this “Brusselization.” Simply put, the term means destroying historic buildings to make way for new, more modern ones. Brusselization also led to some regulations being put in place in Brussels, which protected historic facades and dictated how tall a building could be. These regulations acted as a riptide for other European cities. 3. Some European cities set them apart in a special district. Paris, for one, builds all their skyscrapers in a specific district called La Defence. It allows for high-rise developments, while still protecting the historic center of the city. 4. Skyscrapers can’t block the view in London. In London, there’s a rule set in place that says no skyscraper can block the views of St Paul’s Cathedral, the Monument, the Tower of London, as well as a few other landmarks across the city. They are important views that make up the city skyline. For example, you can see St Paul’s Cathedral all the way from Richmond Park.
Why other countries build them The rise of businesses and office activities meant there was a bigger need for skyscrapers throughout history. They’re functional because they allow the city to grow while occupying minimal floor space. Plus, skyscrapers are architecturally fascinating, and they can make for a beautiful view, like the famous New York skyline, for example.

food QUICK OATMEALS Oatmeal is one of the most popular ingredients among people who like preparing healthy meals without sacrificing quality or flavor. That’s most likely due to the fact that oatmeal is high in fiber, which makes things like oatmeal cookies an excellent choice for a snack or quick breakfast.
47
SEPTEMBER 2018
FOOD
OATMEAL COOKIES 1 cup of oatmeal 1 cup of wholemeal flour or oatmeal flour 1 egg or 1 tablespoon of chia or activated flaxseed 2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter 2 tablespoons of white or brown sugar ½ tablespoon of vanilla essence (optional) ½ tablespoon of baking powder or yeast (optional) 50 ml of water Cocoa nibs or dried berries (optional) 1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, except for the cocoa nibs and berries. Stir to combine it all until you obtain a smooth, slightly doughy but dry mix. Optional ingredients can be added later on to make cookies with different flavors, but you can also add them to the mixture in this step. 2. Add water to the mixture until it feels moist but not too wet. It’s normal for the dough to stick to your fingers if you touch it with your hands. If the mixture is too loose, just add a little more oatmeal or flour. If it’s too dry, add more water. 3. Use a spoon to scoop out portions and place them onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. You can also just butter the baking tray. 4. Add the cocoa nibs or dehydrated berries on top of the cookies. 5. Preheat the oven for about 5 minutes before you use it, and bake the cookies for 15 to 20 minutes at 356ºF. 6. Take the tray out of the oven. Then use a knife to remove the cookies from the paper or tray. This will prevent them from breaking. Tips Store your cookies in a plastic container or covered container in the refrigerator to preserve them for longer. They can last for up to a week. If you want, there’s a vegan version of this recipe that you can try. It’s as simple as replacing the butter with the same amount of olive, canola, or marigold oil; and the egg with 1 tablespoon of chia, flaxseed, or a whole banana. If you can’t find oatmeal flour in the supermarket, you can easily make it at home by processing oat flakes in a blender for a few seconds.

HOW TO SELECT CHEESES
HOW TO CUT AND SERVE CHEESES
For a proper cheese platter, you have to select cheeses that are made in line with European recipes. It is recommended to use 4 to 5 different cheeses simultaneously. Use white mold cheese (Bree, Camembert), semi-hard cheese (Maasdam, Gruyère, Emmental), hard cheese (Grana Padano, Parmesan, Sbrinz), and blue mold cheese (Dorblu, Gorgonzola, Roquefort). You can also choose unusual cheeses like Brunost or goat cheese.
All cheeses on the cheese platter should be cut in a different way so that you can easily understand what type of cheese it is. You should serve cheeses clockwise as their taste intensifies. This way, your guests will understand in which order they have to taste the cheeses. They should begin with white mold cheese. We used Camembert. You don’t need to cut off the mold, it’s safe to eat. It’s better to cut Bree and Camembert in triangles. If the cheese is leaking (which means it’s mature), you can use crackers with a neutral taste as small plates for this cheese. You should put the first cheese with the mildest taste on the plate for 6 hours. It should be placed in the lower point of the circumference of the plate. Then move clockwise. Semi-hard cheese should be served next. We used Maasdam. Maasdam has beautiful holes, so it’s nice to slice it thinly. If 2 cheeses of the same type have different tastes, you can use both on the same platter. That’s why we decided to use Maasdam and Gruyère. Gruyère has a slightly grainy texture, so you can slice it into rectangular sticks. If 2 cheeses of the same type have different tastes, you can use both on the same platter. That’s why we decided to use Maasdam and Gruyère. Gruyère has a slightly grainy texture, so you can slice it into rectangular sticks. Blue mold cheeses have the brightest taste. That is why they will complete the cheese platter. We used Dorblu. Cut the blue mold cheese into cubes.
WHAT YOU CAN ADD TO THE CHEESE PLATTER Nuts complement semi-hard and hard cheeses well. Put grapes between hard and blue mold cheeses. Dried fruits like dried apricots or figs complement white mold cheeses well. A pear must be on a cheese platter. It helps to neutralize the taste of the cheese before you taste the next one. All additional ingredients should be cut into small cubes. Stick toothpicks into the first cheese (white mold cheese) to let your guests know that they should start their tasting with it.

A SIMPLE ENVELOP, METHOD 1 A piece of A4 paper 1. Take a piece of A4 paper and fold it in half horizontally and vertically to form creased lines. Then unfold the paper. 2. Fold the bottom of the paper that constitutes about 1/4 of the paper’s width, up. 3. Fold the edges of the folded rectangle inside as shown in the picture above. 4. Fold the sides of the paper (each of them should constitute about 1/6 of the paper’s length) up. 5. Fold the edges of the rectangles you’ve just folded inside. 6. Fold the upper part along the dotted line, as shown in the example, and insert its edge into the lower pocket to secure the envelope.
ORIGAMI ENVELOPE A square piece of paper A ruler 1. Fold a square piece of paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. 2. Take the corner of the top layer and fold it down. It should touch the bottom part of the triangle. 3. Take a ruler and distinguish 1/3, starting from the left corner of the triangle. 4. Take the right corner of the triangle and fold it to the 1/3 mark on the bottom of the triangle. 5. Take the left corner and fold it so it goes straight into the right corner of the shape. 6. Take the same left corner and fold it back so it touches the left corner. 7. Unfold the triangle you just folded back, open it, and press it with your fingers so it becomes flat and turns into a diamond-shaped pocket. 8. Take the top part of the initial triangle and fold it down. Make sure it fits inside the diamond pocket.
HEARTSHAPED ENVELOPE A piece of A4 paper A pair of scissors A pencil Glue 1. Fold the sheet of A4 paper in half. 2. Draw a half heart with its center on the folded line of the paper and cut it out. 3. Unfold the heart. Fold its sides toward the middle as shown in the picture above. 4. Fold the rounded part of the heart up. 5. Fold the top part of the heart down to close the envelope. 6. Glue the sides of the envelope together.
ENVELOPE WITH CLAPS A piece of A4 paper 1. Fold the paper in half horizontally and then unfold it. Fold the top left corner to the fold in the center. 2. Fold the bottom right corner in the same way. 3. Fold the upper right part of the paper to the left and to the upper triangle. Its edge should touch the triangle. Fold the lower left side of the paper in the same way. 4. Fold the bottom part of the paper toward the middle. 5. Fold the upper part of the paper toward the middle. 6. Hide the edges of the formed shapes into the pockets located under them.

A SIMPLE ENVELOPE, METHOD 2 A square piece of paper Glue 1. Take a square piece of paper and fold it diagonally, making the opposite corners meet. 2. Unfold the paper and connect the other 2 opposite corners in the same way. 3. Unfold the paper and rotate it so one of the angles is on top. You should see 2 diagonal lines on your piece of paper. 4. Fold the left and the right corners of the paper toward the middle. 5. Fold the upper part of the paper to the middle in such a way that it touches the sides of the side triangles. 6. Unfold the top flap. Fold the lower part up so that the corner touches the crease on the upper part. 7. Fold down the top corner of the lower part you’ve just folded. Its sides should be in line with the sides of the side triangles. 8. Unfold the lower part of the envelope completely. Apply glue to the undersides of the side triangles and to the small triangle on the lower part. 9. Fold the small triangle back up and glue it to the lower part. 10. Fold the lower part up and glue it to the side triangles.
