SPACE

Your home is an expression of yourself. It’s the center of your world and is ever-evolving, just like you. So, open the door…invite inspiration to join you…and blend all your passions to create a space where you can welcome life in.

COVE VASES SHORT AND TALL ROSCOE PLATTERS

Monochrome and minimalist, these naturalcolored Cove vases bring texture to a space.

Organically shaped platters in the Roscoe serving set range in sizes and chic, tonal greys.

“Color schemes are important when creating a space, and a monochromatic feeling is always settling.”

“I love when friends pop by. The trick is creating a space where there’s no extra effort needed to kick back and have a good time.”

SEBAGO CHAIR Relax into the slight backward pitch of the laid-back Sebago armchair, constructed of beautifully-grained white ash. “I see the living room as the ultimate lounge space. I want it to be beautiful, but it has to feel fun and relaxed.”

HAIR ON HIDE IVORY POUF Squares of ivory-colored cowhide are stitched together to form this soft-sided pouf that grabs attentions as a footrest, extra seat, or decorative accent. “Adding warm textures helps set a tone of comfort. It’s critical you feel comfortable when you create a space.”

DESIGN EXPERT GENEVIEVE GORDER lives in a beautiful walk-up apartment in New York, where her love of entertaining is reflected in her home space. “I love to create an indoor living space that is casual in its look and feel—a space that says, ’Come on in, make yourself a drink…let’s chill out!’” —Genevieve Open

EDITOR’S LETTER

Social media can feel like your best friend—or your worst enemy. As it goes with friends, most of the time we love everything about them, but once in a while they drive us crazy. Whether our hours on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are a good or a bad thing (remember a few years back when the conversation was about how many hours we, especially children, spent in front of the TV?), I love the endless supply of inspiration social media offers. Instagram is my favorite. I find it motivating to see what other people are doing creatively. I follow cooks, chefs, decorators, makers, designers, gardeners, landscape designers, flower arrangers … the list goes on and on. I am personally acquainted with some of them; others I am familiar with only through their images. But I still feel as if I know these people, or at least the personas they choose to reveal to the world. Some criticize image-based social media as fake, boastful, or putting on airs. But really, when and where do we show our true selves outside our closest circle of friends and family? We put on a bit of a show every time we head to work or to a friend’s for a party. As a former art director, I get creative satisfaction working on how my posts look, picking the best light and camera angles. In our annual Stylemaker issue, we focus on people who we feel are doing beautiful things on social media and influencing the way people decorate, cook, and garden. Our editors selected talented folks from all ages and walks of life. Some have a down-to-earth style like Joy the Baker hosting a lunch in New Orleans. Others, like Barri Leiner Grant, have spent decades keeping up with a parade STEPHEN ORR, of trends as interior stylists. We get lots of ideas and Editor in Chief trendspotting from these creative souls, and we instagram @steporr twitter @orrsteporr can’t wait to introduce you to our talented “friends.”

MICELLAR WATER

If you’ve ever thought you didn’t have the time or energy to wash your face, this quick and gentle no-rinse wash is your new best friend.

Erica Metzger Beauty & Fashion Director

instagram can doze off for maybe an hour with dirty skin, @embeautycoach but I can’t turn in for the night without washing my face. For one, my complexion looks dull (and my pores seem enormous) if I don’t faithfully remove the daily layer of makeup, sunscreen, and grime. What about my fancy night serum? It deserves a clean surface. Plus, the ritual feels great: lather, massage, LO O K FO R B O N U S splash—what’s not to love? Would this cleanser be as effective as a foam and feel as pampering? It turns out that micellar water does indeed wipe away the remains of the day—with some help from a cotton round. Primarily water, the formula contains mild surfactants that cluster into tiny balls (called micelles), says Mona Gohara, M.D., a dermatologist based in Danbury, CT. “The micelles dissolve and lift away dirt and grime without drying out your skin.” Many micellars even remove eye makeup—except for truly budgeproof mascara. The streamlined step is ideal for anyone who can’t muster the energy to run the tap before bed. FOUNDATION

When your skin needs to look flawless, it’s all about that base. Learn how to get coverage that looks natural.

The right shade should disappear into your skin, but it’s unrealistic to expect one foundation to always match. “You need a couple of shades you can switch between or mix when your skin tone changes,” says Luis Casco, a global beauty ambassador for Mary Kay. Skin tone typically darkens in the summer and lightens in the winter, so you may need to go up or down a shade to keep your look natural. Also, Luis points out that most us of have slightly different shades of skin on the body and face. Two hues allow some wiggle room to even out skin between face, neck, and chest.

2

PICK YOUR FINISH

Choose a formula that complements your skin type. A matte texture like NARS Velvet Matte Foundation Stick ($45; narscosmetics.com) helps control oil and shine; a moisturizing or luminizing foundation gives dry

skin more of a dewy glow. TRY CoverGirl Vitalist Healthy

Elixir Foundation, $11.99; drugstores, or Mary Kay TimeWise Luminous-Wear Liquid Foundation, $22; marykay.com

3

BLEND WITH A TOOL

When spread on too thickly, foundation looks cakey or masklike. A foundation brush makes it easy to apply your makeup in light layers, building up more coverage where you need it. “Start in the center of the face: dab on the nose, under the eyes, and any areas of redness,” says celebrity makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor. “Then buff the color out toward the jaw and hairline where you need less product.” Or keep things extra sheer by tapping on foundation with a damp makeup sponge. Raised in Minnesota and trained as an artist, he fell into decorating while working as an art installer for designer Miles Redd. Kaihoi is here to help you conquer purple-phobia. KE E P IT S I M PLE

says designer David Kaihoi, who transformed the living room in his onebedroom New York City apartment into a cozy jewel box by painting almost every inch of it—walls, shutters, trim—matte purple. The eggplant velvet banquette subtly contrasts with the walls, and the oxblood throw is a vivid but not-too-bright accent. Dark green in the artwork, plants, and ethnic textiles on pillows balances and lightens the purple and ties it back to nature.

isa Hauswirth isn’t that different from any homeowner who turns to an online design service—except she used to work for one. Though she knew what she liked, when it came to renovating her early 1900s San Francisco home, Lisa hired Decorist, the online design service where she had held multiple roles (except designer). In fact, she hired two Decorist pros: MAS Design for its kitchen expertise and Simone Howell to help her fi nish almost-there rooms. “You always wonder, I know I like this or that, but is it the right decision?” she says. The collaboration unlocked the earthy-glam look that was Lisa’s vision all along.

imple, straightforward, and refined. Gregg Renfrew relies on this combination in all aspects of her life: her wardrobe, her home, and her company, the nontoxic beauty brand Beautycounter. Gregg’s home is the decor equivalent of her go-to outfit: a striped T-shirt with jeans and a statement necklace. Dramatic black and navy accent walls are the unfussy backdrop that goes with everything and anchor the sunny L.A. ranch. Large-scale artwork and pottery are the chunky jewelry. And Gregg’s love of bold pattern comes through on pillows, rugs, and even the family room sofa. She likes her furniture oversized and comfy for husband Mark and kids Phebe, Jameson, and Georgie, but in well-tailored shapes that don’t overwhelm the room. Gregg’s past career in fashion with the likes of J.Crew and Bergdorf Goodman helped cement her personal style and the confidence to stick to it. “Your home should be a version of who you are and what you love,” she says. “It should feel easy.”

Two crafty sisters fashioned a modern pegboard that displays often-used art supplies and small treasures while keeping them well within reach.

DOWE LS MAKE STU RDY S H E LF S U PPO RTS FO R PI N E PL AN KS .

Twins and best friends Melissa Fenlon and Sara Albers don’t do everything together— Sara lives in San Francisco, Melissa in Crested Butte, CO. But they regularly team up on creative projects sharing the clean, modern style they both love. Case in point: the wall organizer they designed for Sara’s home office. The white-and-raw-wood version of a pegboard features movable shelves and a piece of copper pipe to corral rolls of washi tape. “This project is modern yet works in so many spaces,” Melissa says. “It’s so versatile.” Sara says the pegboard, which cost $40 in supplies, not only neatens her work space, it also sparks her creativity with its easy-to-change display. Despite her novice building skills (Sara admits power tools are outside of her “crafting comfort zone“), the pegboard took just two-and-a-half hours to complete. See page 66 for the how-to.

INSIDE TRACK Remodeling can be scary. With her company Sweeten, Jean Brownhill lessens the stress by guiding homeowners and contractors. Her advice can make your project go smoothly. AF TE R

Her own bad renovation experience inspired Jean Brownhill, a trained architect, to launch a matchmaking business. She helps homeowners planning a renovation (many for the fi rst time) fi nd the right contractor and navigate trouble spots. A successful remodel starts with these seven tips.

First, Brownhill suggests you identify what’s driving you. This includes what she calls technical motivations (my kitchen is small and hard to cook in) and emotional motivations (my kitchen makes me feel like I’m still a renter; I want to feel grown-up). Clearly stating your reasons helps prioritize must-haves.

2

Choose a contractor who knows how to communicate.

from them during the remodeling process, compare their project bids, and imagine yourself meeting with them weekly—or more frequently—during the project. “Focus on communication because that’s where projects break down,” Brownhill says. “Ask yourself if your communication styles are compatible.”

3

Don’t just accept the low bid.

A contractor’s bid that is signifi cantly lower than the others is a red fl ag. There shouldn’t be much variation among bids. If there is, ask why. “We have seen it so many times,” Brownhill says. “We’ve had to pick up the pieces after someone’s BY KIT SEL ZER

Be smart about your budget.

Set aside 10–15 percent of your renovation budget for contingencies. Ask your contractor for ways to get a high-end look at an affordable price. One example Brownhill cites: installing custom doors on stock cabinets to make them more special. What’s worth the splurge? “Anything you’re going to touch on a daily basis, which includes faucets and door handles,” Brownhill says.

7

If possible, move out while your home is being renovated. ”Small children especially should not be living in an active construction site,” Brownhill says. “There is so much

construction debris— fi ne particles in the air that you should not be inhaling.” If you are staying put to save money, be aware that having your contractor work around you costs time, so you may not save money in the end. If you must stay, Brownhill recommends using a good-quality dust barrier—a plastic sheeting system that seals rooms under construction—and spending a few nights in a hotel during the worst of it (read: no running water). “ALLSPICE

You probably use allspice in pumpkin pie and not much else. But the spice is incredibly versatile and popular around the world in both sweet and savory recipes.

ALLSPICE GRILLED SWEET POTATOES & PEARS Cut two large peeled sweet potatoes into ¹⁄2-inch-thick slices. Toss with 2 Tbsp. olive oil and season with ³⁄4 tsp. ground allspice, ¹⁄4 tsp. salt, and ¹⁄4 tsp. black pepper. Grill 10 minutes on each side or until tender. Meanwhile, whisk together 3 Tbsp. olive oil, 1 Tbsp. red wine vinegar, 1 tsp. ground allspice, ¹⁄4 tsp. salt, and ¹⁄4 tsp. black pepper. Pour over grilled sweet potatoes, thinly sliced pears, and sliced green onions; toss to coat.

Steak au poivre and cacio e pepe are two meals you might already be serving that use black pepper in a prominent way. Consider adding green or white peppercorns to your seasoning repertoire to experience their different flavor nuances.

PEPPERY ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Using a mortar and pestle, mash 1 Tbsp. black peppercorns and 1 Tbsp. olive oil to form a thick paste. Rub onto 2 lb. acorn squash cut into wedges. Roast at 350ºF in a baking pan 55 minutes or until tender, turning once. Top with shaved Parmesan.

“This is one spice I always encourage people to purchase whole,” Lior says. “Preground can contain fillers like ground olive pits, which aren’t dangerous but won’t deliver flavor. Invest in a pepper mill that allows you to tailor the coarseness.”

“BLACK PEPPER is often taken for granted, but its robust flavor and ability to add heat should be a thoughtful consideration when cooking. It’s not just a sidekick for salt!” 98

Ground cumin might get a fair amount of play on taco night, but don’t overlook whole cumin seeds. They add surprising crunch to the simplest dishes.

HONEYCUMIN ROASTED CARROTS In a baking pan toss 1 lb. peeled carrots and 2 peeled garlic cloves with 1 Tbsp. cumin seeds, 1 Tbsp. olive oil, 2 tsp. sherry vinegar, and 1 tsp. honey. Roast at 375ºF for 30 to 35 minutes or until tender, stirring once.

arri Leiner Grant is a photo stylist, writer, jewelry designer, yogi, wife to Alex, and mother to Emma and Quinn. She is also an avid traveler, a flea market aficionado, a framer of rumpled kindergarten paintings, and a collector of all things chipped, faded, or beachy. She believes that “a cool pocketbook is the throw pillow of your outfit” and that style is about “being curious and being brave.” The woman has never met an object she doesn’t want to monogram. She’s a sucker for anything that has a history, stirs a memory, or tells a story. Barri called on her talents, which attract styling clients like Crate & Barrel, to give her 1884 brownstone a youthful makeover. “She was beautiful, but foofy,” Barri says. There were velvet upholstered walls, heavy curtains, and chinoiserie everywhere. “She was like a girl who wore too much makeup,” Barri says. “The bones were there; I just had to take her to the Bobbi Brown counter. I knew exactly what I had to do. I had to make her young and happy again.”

Skip the formal chandelier. A large geometric fixture makes a traditional-leaning room current.

3

EMBRACE COLOR “My yellow sofa is a statement piece, and the statement is: Don’t be afraid of color!” A pale backdrop and a light touch with the rest of the furniture, like the glass side table, makes it work.

4

BUY SOME HISTORY “Buying a portrait at the flea market is like picking up a stray. Somebody cherished it,” Barri says. “This lady (opposite top) reminds me of my best friend, so I had to bring her home.”

A symmetrical arrangement brings calm to the riot of patterned pillows.

5

REIMAGINE EVERYTHING “It’s a mistake to think something is supposed to be a certain way or can have only one use. We turn this teak coffee table on its side and have a fantastic console table.”

6

NEVER BE DONE “A done room is a dead room,” says Barri quoting author Alexandra Stoddard. Her go-to change agents are pillows and throws. Sofas are solid colors to accommodate frequent swaps.

I’M DRAWN TO THINGS THAT SAY PUT YOUR FEET UP. I’LL TAKE IMPERFECT OVER FLAWLESS ANY DAY.

BARRI’S DOS & DON’TS

7

IF IT SPEAKS TO YOU, LISTEN

DO EMBRACE CHANGE

“Each one is just some stranger’s Sunday afternoon art project—but I fall for them every time,” Barri says of the flea market flower paintings on her kitchen wall.

“The cabinetry in my office was the color of a tiki bar and trimmed in bamboo. I looked right over that and pictured creamy white. A coat of paint took the room from Gilligan’s Island to Palm Beach. If the wood in your house is not making you happy, do something about it.” DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

“Some people think all the dark gray and chocolate brown in my home is dramatic, but I find it really cozy. The dark colors ground and sort of neutralize the bright pinks and yellows.” DO PICK A SIGNATURE COLOR

“Our front door was an extremely gloomy brown. We painted it emerald green and allowed that green to carry the eye through our entire house by adding pops of it in curtains, pillows, and artwork.” DON’T FORGET ABOUT LIGHTING

“I never really gave much thought to lighting until my pal Greg Jagmin told me to look up. Point taken! Now I like to use fixtures that will cast beautiful shadows and reflections. The right light fixture can be a quick fix for a boring room.”

FOCUS ON THE STORY YOU WANT YOUR HOUSE TO TELL. IS IT HAPPY? ARE THERE MEMORIES? IS THERE A SURPRISE OR TWO?

GIVE EVERY ROOM SPARKLE “I’m a big fan of metallics. They add to a room the way jewelry sparkles up an outfit. The shine of these vintage brass shelves creates a dinged-up warmth. It’s like putting on a cool 1970s accessory from Gucci.”

9

SHOP KIDS’ DECOR STORES “Lots of kids’ stuff is excellent quality,” Barri says. The rope mirror in her powder room is from The Land of Nod. “I considered a brass mirror, but I like the rough texture against the dressy wallpaper. It’s Nantucket chic.”

Cover a piano bench with a faux sheepskin and you’ve got a chic little coffee table.

10

THINK OF YOUR BED LIKE AN OUTFIT “I figure out bedding the way I pack for vacation—you always want that easy dress, the print shirt, the cool hat,” Barri says. “I start with simple linens and layer in patterned pillowcases that I can change out when I get bored. The coral matelassé coverlet and Barbie-pink throw play well together because the chocolate walls keep them in line.” Q

Q SUNDAY

he ultimate lunch, says Joy Wilson, aka Joy the Baker, doesn’t have to be overly planned or perfect. In fact, not perfect is Joy’s goal. In the age of social media when people edit their parties—and their lives—to look carefree and effortless, Joy chooses to embrace the real. “I don’t have all the answers to cooking or entertaining, but I have found a good balance between being imperfect and having expertise in the kitchen,” Joy says. Her secret is to keep the food simple and get everyone in on the making of it. “Why should everything be done before friends come over? At any party—especially a lazy Sunday lunch—everyone is expected to pitch in,” says Joy, who transplanted herself from SoCal glam to New Orleans casual three years ago because she wanted to live in a city famous for easy entertaining. “That’s what New Orleans is all about,” she says. It doesn’t hurt that the city also has a reputation for outstanding cuisine. Today’s menu features recipes from Joy’s latest book, Over Easy, which pays homage to her adopted hometown. “I make the classic dirty rice with sausage and chicken livers ahead then have a friend stuff the spicy mixture into ripe tomatoes and throw them in the oven.” Another friend is assigned to wash the mustard greens: “Washing greens is always a good task to give to someone else,” Joy says with a laugh. These dishes may be new to Joy’s fans who know her for the likes of her vanilla bean-flecked Bundt cake and other baked sweets, but her new cookbook moves into savory territory. No matter what she serves, it comes with a helping of Southern hospitality. “I’ve found a lovely small group of friends here, and we can always find a reason to gather to celebrate or sit on a porch and share a cocktail.”

Annette never felt she had great hair, so she went to the hairdresser often, for treatments and even hair extensions. But with time, her hair felt increasingly thin and fragile. She had to do something.

My hair loss was frustrating

I

“I have always been on the lookout for a good way to keep my hair nourished and healthy. I longed for more volume and less shedding. At the hairdresser they proposed hair care products which helped a bit, but after visiting my health food store, I learned the value of hair supplements.

The trick that worked

This Swedish hair tablet is based on apple extract

STRAWBERRY-CHAMOMILE BOURBON PUNCH

I never thought of nourishing my hair from within. The lady at the store recommended Hair VolumeTM, a Swedish supplement with apple extract, which she told me her customers raved about. She told me to use it at least 3 months, so I bought a box and got started.

For hot days, Joy likes to make ice cubes from this punch and stud them with chamomile flowers, orange twists, or strawberry halves. This way each drink stays chilled without diluting its flavor. HANDS-ON TIME 20 min. TOTAL TIME 1 hr. 35 min. 3 2¹⁄2 8 4 1 3

I noticed a change The first month I noticed my nails seemed stronger. Then my hair felt healthier shortly after. That made me feel so happy. Now I am a great fan of Hair Volume and recommend it to everyone who wants beautiful and healthy hair.” - Annette, Copenhagen, DK

DID YOU KNOW? In addition to containing high amounts of hair growth nutrients, Hair Volume™ also contains copper, which can be helpful in fighting grey hairs, as it promotes melanin production.

Hair Volume™ is a Swedish best selling hair supplement which contains apple extract with an ingredient called procyanidin B2. One tablet a day is all you need as part of your daily beauty routine. Available at participating pharmacies, health retailers and online. For more info or to buy directly, please call 1-877-696-6734 or visit our website newnordicusa.com. www.newnordicusa.com

The process was painful,” she says. “It took me over an hour to really figure out what level the classes were and where they were being offered. I ended up just not taking a class. That’s when I realized how many people were probably skipping out on being active because it was too hard to find the right workout.” Through ClassPass, you quickly locate an exercise class that fits what you’re interested in taking that day, making it easy to try different workouts without spending a lot of money to join multiple gyms or studios.

As a child, Molly saw the power of running up close. “My mom started in her 50s, and I saw her blossom; she started speaking up more for herself.” Molly has always been a competitive runner but didn’t think of it as a self-improvement tool until age 32 as her marriage was ending. “I started going on longer solo runs and enjoyed the solitude and spiritual grace I felt,” Molly says. She credits those selfreflective runs for helping her take charge of her life— including a decision to stop drinking. “I wanted all girls to feel that strong and full of self-worth, so three years later, in 1996, I started Girls on the Run with just 13 girls.” There are now 225 chapters across the country and more than 1 million alums who’ve gone through the 10-week program.

website and app that allows you to text with licensed therapists, making mental health care more widely accessible.

“Oren and I were in a bad place, and we decided to give it one last chance and went to couples therapy,” Roni says. Because that decision saved their marriage, Roni became passionate about the power of therapy and went back to school to become a therapist. “That’s when I realized the mental health system is so broken.” Indeed, research shows that over half of people who experience mental illness don’t seek help in part because of cost and lack of access. “Oren and I knew that if we could help people overcome those barriers, we could make mental health care a right, not a privilege,” Roni says. Talkspace connects you to a licensed therapist and allows unlimited messages—text, audio, or video—for as little as $32 a week.

A skin cancer diagnosis at 29 started Christy’s obsession with sun protection. “I was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting to get the cancer removed from my face. Willa was a few months old. Right then I made it my mission to do everything I could to ensure that Willa or other girls didn’t repeat my skin story.” When Willa turned 9, she became interested in taking care of her skin but couldn’t find products she loved. “They were filled with chemicals and fragrance, and either smelled like coconuts or irritated my skin,” Willa says. So the mother-daughter team created a better option. “We knew that sunscreen, cleansers, and moisturizers had to look and feel great going on or girls wouldn’t use them,” Christy says. “Our mineral sunscreen has a slight tint, a powdery finish, and no synthetic fragrances.” Since the 2015 launch, they’ve sold 25,000-plus bottles of sunscreen and expanded their product line.

So starting a company that increases access to healthy food was a no-brainer. “We don’t mark the food up, but charge a $60 annual membership fee,” he says. For each membership sold, Thrive donates one to a veteran, teacher, student, or low-income family. “The first testimonial was a single mom dumpster diving to find food for her kids,” he says. “I cried when I read that; there were moments when I was that person desperate to find something to eat.”

PUT YOUR YEAR IN GEAR Welcome to the “Argh, I’ve got too much to do” season. As your busy-factor ramps up, get everyone out the door smoothly by prepping these three hot spots. [ BE

THERE ON TIME]

KEEP A CALENDAR

HANG IT UP

Stop the schedule madness: Post appointments, meetings, and lessons where everyone can see them.

ACCESS ON THE GO

A surefi re way to loop everyone in is to use an app that lets all family members view each other’s day, week, or month on their smartphones and the home computer. Alerts go out for new events and appointments, so there are no excuses for missing a thing!

Another way to keep everyone abreast of schedules: Hang an erasable calendar in a high-traffi c area, like the kitchen. “You don’t have to wipe the whole thing clean at the end of every week,” says Amanda Sullivan, author of Organized Enough. “Keep the weekly activities, like baseball practice, but erase and replace things like ‘doc appt’ or ‘Aunt Dana comes for dinner.’”

MAKE YOUR OWN PRINT FREE CALENDAR PAGES AT BHG.COM/ CALENDAR.

Fill in the can’t-miss dates, attach pages to a colorful clipboard ($6; poppin.com), and hang anywhere.

GOOGLE CALENDAR APP

Color-code events by person. Set a goal like practice trumpet three times a week, and the free app schedules them.

COZI APP

Cozi combines the calendar with a shared grocery and chore list everyone can add to and update in real time.

[GRAB

PACK AN ACTIVITY BAG Beating the after-school dash to activities is about having what the kids (and you) need at the ready.

Swim practice starts in 10 minutes and you’re still at home, 25 minutes away. Get out fast(er) by keeping a packed tote bag by the door. Stock it with everything you need—sports gear, snacks, that book you’ve been wanting to read (a girl can dream!).

[TIME

I T R I G H T]

Make corralling everyone to get out the door more organized by breaking it down timewise: Decide when you need to leave, and work backward from there. For example, to be ready to go by 8 a.m., maybe that means you’re awake by 6:30, and the kids are up by 7, dressed by 7:15, and finished with breakfast by 7:40.

1 DON’T SAY “I’LL GET BACK TO YOU” Unless you truly need to check, this holds that person hostage, and you can’t move on either, says Samantha Ettus, author of The Pie Life. Making quick decisions frees up your time and emotional energy.

ESSENTIALS TO HAVE ON HAND

RAIN GEAR

Be prepared for late-afternoon thunderstorms. Keep a few inexpensive ponchos like the ones from Academy Sports + Outdoors (academy.com). Always have an umbrella and boots, too.

WATER BOTTLES

Keep the crew hydrated with an insulated water bottle. Check out the versatile Yeti (yeti.com) bottles and tumblers insulated for cold and hot drinks.

SNACKS

They help everyone stay sane and powered up until dinner. Good options with the right combo of carbs and fiber include: roasted chickpeas, popcorn, jerky (there are turkey, vegan, and salmon varieties), and bars (look for ones with unprocessed seeds, fruit, and nuts that are 250 calories or less).

GAMES

Keep siblings entertained with some old-school paper and pencil activities: Mad Libs, coloring books, and puzzles.

2 START WITH, “OH, I WISH I COULD!” Recognizing the event is worthwhile softens the no. Follow with a vague statement like “It’s just not going to work for me.” Giving a specific reason may open the door to tailor the request to your schedule.

RISE. EAT. SHINE.

Cookies and bars for breakfast? Absolutely! These healthy recipes are perfect for making and freezing so you never have an excuse to skip the most important meal of the day—even in the morning rush. FRUIT-AND-NUT COOKIES The combination of ingredients in this cookie gives you what breakfast should: complex carbs, good fats, and protein that supply a steady stream of fuel. Oat bran is the complex carb that keeps your blood sugar and energy stable. Pecans and flaxseeds have good fats; dates or figs supply protein, plus the iron and calcium many women don’t get enough of in their diets.

ONE Preheat oven to 350°F.

Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl combine 4 lightly beaten eggs, 1¹⁄3 cups packed brown sugar, 6 Tbsp. melted butter, and 2 tsp. vanilla. Stir in ½ cup chopped pitted dried dates or figs. TWO In a medium bowl combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup whole wheat flour, and ½ cup oat bran. Add flour mixture to date mixture, stirring until moist. Stir in ½ cup chopped toasted pecans. Using a scant ¼-cup measure or scoop, drop dough in mounds about 3 inches apart onto prepared cookie sheets. THREE Bake 10 to 12 minutes

or until edges are golden. Cool on cookie sheets 1 minute. Remove; cool on wire racks. Makes 20 cookies. PER COOKIE 211 cal, 7 g fat,

46 mg chol, 109 mg sodium, 34 g carb, 2 g fiber, 4 g pro.

Combine any of these bars or cookies with a glass of milk or 6 ounces of yogurt for a protein and calcium boost.

ORANGE-ALMOND BARS Almonds and dried fruit help you get a head start on your fiber, calcium, and iron intake for the day. Almonds have the highest amount of calcium of any nut, with 75 milligrams in 1 ounce. Dried apricots contain 20 percent of your daily fiber needs, plus iron, which is easier for you to absorb when combined with the vitamin C in oranges.

Whole wheat flour is higher in fiber, vitamins, and minerals than processed white or all-purpose flour.

Almond butter is high in monounsaturated (good) fat: 1 Tbsp. has 25 percent more than 1 Tbsp of peanut butter.

make it ONE Preheat oven to 350°F.

Line a 13×9-inch baking pan with foil and coat with cooking spray. TWO Remove 1 tsp. zest and

squeeze ½ cup juice from an orange. In a large bowl combine zest, juice, and ¼ cup packed brown sugar. Stir in 1 cup chopped apricots and/or pitted dried dates. Whisk in 1 lightly beaten egg, ¹⁄3 cup honey, and ¼ cup almond butter. THREE In a bowl stir together 1¼ cups whole wheat flour, 1¼ cups all-purpose flour, ½ tsp. baking powder, ½ tsp. baking soda, and ¹⁄4 tsp. salt. Add flour mixture and 1 cup chopped almonds to fruit mixture; stir until moistened. Spoon into prepared baking pan. FOUR Bake about 12 minutes or until edges are browned and a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool; cut into bars. Makes 16 bars. Settlements have been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging that consumers sustained economic losses because they purchased or leased vehicles from various auto companies that manufactured, distributed, or sold vehicles containing allegedly defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation and its affiliates. The Settlements include certain vehicles made by BMW, Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota (the “Subject Vehicles”). BMW, Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota deny any and all allegations of wrongdoing and the Court has not decided who is right. If you have already received a separate recall notice for your BMW, Mazda, Subaru, or Toyota vehicle requesting that you bring it to your local retailer to have the Takata airbags repaired and have not yet done so, you should contact your local retailer to make an appointment for this repair as soon as possible. Some vehicles will be recalled for repair at a later date, and some vehicles may not be recalled. When recalled Takata airbags deploy, they may spray metal debris toward vehicle occupants and may cause serious injury. Please see your original recall notices and www.AirBagRecall.com for further details. Am I included in the proposed Settlements? The Settlements include the following persons and entities: • Owners or lessees, as of June 9, 2017, of a Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, and • Former owners or lessees of a Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, who, between April 11, 2013 and June 9, 2017, sold or returned pursuant to a lease, a Subject Vehicle that was recalled before June 9, 2017. A full list of the Subject Vehicles can be found at www.AutoAirbagSettlement.com. The Settlements do not involve claims of personal injury or property damage to any property other than the Subject Vehicles. What do the Settlements provide? BMW, Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota have agreed to Settlements with a combined value of approximately $553 million, including a 10% credit for Rental Car/Loaner Programs. The Settlement Funds will be used to pay for Settlement benefits and cover the costs of the Settlements over an approximately fouryear period. The Settlements offer several benefits for Class Members, including, (1) payments for certain out-of-pocket expenses incurred related to a Takata airbag recall of a Subject Vehicle, (2) a Rental Car/Loaner Program while certain Subject Vehicles are awaiting repair, (3) an Outreach Program to maximize completion of the recall remedy, (4) additional cash payments to Class Members from residual settlement funds, if any remain, and (5) a Customer Support Program to help with repairs associated with affected Takata airbag inflators and their replacements. The Settlement website explains each of these benefits in detail. How can I get a Payment? You must file a claim to receive a payment during the first four years of the Settlements. If you still own or lease a Subject Vehicle, you must also bring it to an authorized dealership for the recall remedy, as directed by a recall notice, if you have not already done so. Visit the website and file a claim online or download one and file by mail. The deadline to file a claim will be at least one year from the date the Settlements are finalized and will be posted on the website when it’s known. What are my other options? If you do not want to be legally bound by the Settlements, you must exclude yourself by September 25, 2017. If you do not exclude yourself, you will release any claims you may have against BMW, Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota, in exchange for certain settlement benefits. The potential available benefits are more fully described in the Settlements, available at the settlement website. You may object to the Settlements by September 25, 2017. You cannot both exclude yourself from, and object to, the Settlements. The Long Form Notices for each Settlement available on the website listed below explains how to exclude yourself or object. The Court will hold a fairness hearing on October 25, 2017 to consider whether to finally approve the Settlements and a request for attorneys’ fees of up to 30% of the total Settlement Amount and incentive awards of $5,000 for each of the Class Representatives. You may appear at the fairness hearing, either by yourself or through an attorney hired by you, but you don’t have to. For more information, including the relief, eligibility and release of claims (excluding certain personal injury or property damage claims), in English or Spanish, call or visit the website below.

1956 HANDMADE CERAMICS

These vases and planters are the collecting trifecta: beautiful, useful, and unique. TH E O RI G I NAL Our June 1956 issue kicked off a series of articles highlighting flower arranging techniques, like this Japanese approach. Floral styles may have changed, but the beauty of handmade ceramics continues to elevate any arrangement. TH E U PDATE Handmade adds something special, says Rita Mehta, founder of The American Edit blog. “I know what I’m getting is one-of-a-kind. And vases are the perfect mix of form and function—without flowers, they’re sculpture.” For modern takes on the craft, Rita looks to contemporary American makers for streamlined shapes and bold hues. “Color is primed for a comeback!”

Since the 1940s, Eva Zeisel’s organic forms have been a U.S. design staple.

The designer of this nageire arrangement, Tomoko Yamamoto, was the first woman named Flower Master by Japan’s emperor.
