I find the lull between the holidays and the beginning of spring to be one of the most creatively satisfying times of the year. To liven things up last winter, I took a screen printing class at our art museum in Des Moines. I enjoyed the scheduled, mandatory creativity and the accomplishment of learning something new. That said, at the end of a hard workday, I’d often scheme an excuse to cancel. Too tired. Need to do this or that chore. But I made myself go to class, and what it did for me was profound. What I invariably experienced during those creative hours is called flow. Some psychologists use the term to describe the part of the creative process when you lose yourself in the act of painting, crafting, sewing, reading, baking, gardening, flower arranging, organizing, or writing. It can occur while doing anything that so positively absorbs you (aka, you’re in the zone) that you don’t keep track of time. Some people may even skip a meal (although that never happens to me). The quiet, often drab months of winter are a good time to take up a project that’s likely to get you into the flow. Most of the things we write about in our magazine are not life’s necessities. We STEPHEN ORR, focus more on life’s niceties. Our aim is to give you Editor in Chief all the little tips and the inspiration that help you instagram @steporr twitter @orrsteporr live every day as creatively satisfying as possible.

Hello

antioxidants. Goodbye free radicals. The power of pomegranates and the polyphenol antioxidants that fight free radicals. SUPER FRUIT WITH SUPER POWER. We’ve all heard about antioxidants and how important they are to include in our diet through whole, natural foods. Here we take a deeper look at what makes antioxidants in pomegranates so unique. Pomegranates, and of course POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice, contain antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant known to combat unstable molecules that can cause damage to your cells and DNA over time. These harmful molecules are called free radicals. And they’re POM’s nemesis. Though the human body does a good job of handling normal levels of unstable molecules, things like smoking, stress and other environmental pollutants can contribute to the generation of even more free radicals. Which means, unless you live in a bubble, everyone can benefit from the antioxidant power of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice. POM & POLYPHENOLS: THE INSIDE SCOOP. Every pomegranate has a variety of polyphenol antioxidants. The deep red arils have anthocyanins, while the rind and

white pith surrounding the arils have ellagitannins. POM Juice is the perfect way to get the fighting power of both. To maximize the polyphenol level, POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice is made by pressing the entire pomegranate, so that each 16oz bottle contains the juice from 4 whole-pressed pomegranates. That means there’s antioxidant goodness in every bottle. An in vitro study at UCLA found that pomegranate juice has, on average, more antioxidant capacity than red wine, grape juice, or green tea. In fact, each serving of POM has 4x the antioxidants, on average, of green tea. ANTIOXIDANT Potency Index

Contains 4x the antioxidants, on average, of green tea. DRINK TO YOUR HEALTH. It’s easy to drink in the amazing health benefits of pomegranates every day. Enjoy POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice with breakfast or simply add it to your favorite smoothie. Or mix POM with seltzer for an afternoon pick-me-up or for an evening mock-tail. So drink up! Your body and mind will thank you. POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice, the Antioxidant Superpower, can be found in the produce section of your supermarket. It’s also available through Amazon.

liquid liner pen is nonnegotiable if you want to pull off the season’s most popular eye makeup trick—the wing, also known as a cat eye. But I’m intimidated by liquid liner’s crisp precision and budgeproof pigment. My comfort zone is shadow blended over gel or pencil. I doubt I’m the only one, so I asked for guidance from Sarah Lucero, lead makeup artist for Stila Cosmetics. Her simple game changer: Start with your preferred liner formula (gel or a freshly sharpened pencil) to map out the shape, then trace back over it with liquid liner to give it a sharp, polished edge. I feel confident enough holding an angled brush dipped in gel liner to give it a go. Now, how exactly to wing it? “The insider trick is to work backward so you don’t end up with an angle that’s too high or curly,” Lucero says. Place your liner brush outside the eye, just above the outer lashes, and draw a line down to the outer corner then over the lash line. You can widen the wing by adding a second line slightly above the first then filling in the gap. Last, step back: Is your wing messy, uneven, or too thick? Nothing a swipe or two with a cotton swab and some makeup remover can’t fix. Q

Use this formula: Pair an oversize print with a small one, then add a stripe or two. Link them with your color palette.

DARK WALLS Intense inky shades instantly transform even large rooms into cozy retreats. Keep the curtains in the same tone for a seamless look.

For true relaxation, a room needs more than recessed lighting. Multiple light fixtures—with dimmer switches—in brass, chrome, and nickel create ambience.

LOUNGE SEATING Lobbies are full of sink-in sofas for hunkering down with a book or getting lost in Pinterest. Look for deep seats that are less than 19 inches tall.

CURATED LOOK Mix new pieces with unique secondhand finds for character. Try online consignment shops like Chairish.

PRO TIPS

FIELD REPORT

The key to achieving #closetgoals is personalization. Integrate these tips from the pros for a closet that works, no matter what you need to store.

Start with a plan. Make a list of items to store (and seize the chance to toss what’s never used). Jot down dimensions to facilitate container shopping.

If you lack a closet, freestanding shelves will do the job. Lose the packaging from paper supplies to streamline open storage.

“Treat a closet like its own room where everything has a place. Take a few hours one afternoon to make it organized and pretty, and you’ll be more apt to actually put the towels in their correct spot. Otherwise, it’s so easy to dump them.” B AC KG R O U N D A R T

@KELLEYNAN

@ I DA . H I P PYG I R L

Jennifer wallpapered other closets, but for this one decided on a stencil. “It was easy and super-inexpensive. I did some basic measuring then went at it. In a closet, you can hide any mess-ups behind baskets or towels.”

Hang shallow wire baskets on the inside of a door for allergy meds, sunscreen, bandages, and other essentials you want to easily eyeball and grab.

Take advantage of tall doors for storing often-used cleaning tools like brooms and dusters (or anything else too long to keep on a shelf).

“I think our closets are the thing guests comment on the most when they visit.”

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Closet space was what you’d expect in a no-frills 1960s ranch: not much. Jennifer and Kyle battled for hanging space on one rod in the under2-foot-deep closet behind mirrored sliding doors.

The couple stole feet from the playroom to gain a walk-in closet. A barn-style door from Lowe’s preserves floor space. “In a tight space, it’s a functional and stylish option to a swing-out door,” Jaworski says. The rug launched the room’s palette.

Hooks (instead of a towel bar) maximize drying in a mini space.

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Jennifer figured she could live with the bathroom’s dated look for a while. But a claustrophobically small shower was more of a deal breaker. “I remember walking in for the fi rst time and thinking, I am not showering in there,” Jennifer says. Another issue: a makeup counter that didn’t get used enough to warrant the floor space.

Removing the makeup counter paved the way for a larger shower and a spa vibe. For Jaworski, the smart money is always on white subway tile. “It’s timeless,” she says. “Keeping your tile affordable and simple allows you to splurge on things like fixtures and a glass door.” A vessel sink on the new vanity meant they could have a functioning top drawer.

PANCAKES

FOOD STYLING: GREG LUNA

Bedhead, slippers, and a tall stack of fluffy, golden flapjacks. This is what weekend mornings are made for.

Cooking pancakes is about as simple as recipes go, but a few key details make the difference between a mediocre stack and fluffy perfection. Buttermilk gives the cakes a slightly tangy flavor and makes them extra moist; a combination of baking soda and baking powder gives them the right amount of puff. For brown on the outside, tender on the inside pancakes, make sure the skillet is hot enough before adding the batter. The test: Flick a drop of water onto the surface. If the drop sputters and dances across the griddle, it’s the right temp. (If it evaporates, the griddle is too hot.) Whatever you do, avoid smashing the cakes with your spatula so you don’t deflate the fluffiness.

Individual results may vary.

Indication TRINTELLIX (vortioxetine) is a prescription medicine used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

Important Safety Information Suicidal Thoughts and Actions and Antidepressant Drugs Antidepressants may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some children, teens or young adults within the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed. Depression or other serious mental illnesses are the most important causes of suicidal thoughts or actions. People who have (or have a family history of) bipolar illness, or suicidal thoughts or actions may have a particularly high risk. Pay close attention to any changes, especially sudden changes in mood, behavior, thoughts or feelings. Call your healthcare provider right away if symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, impulsivity, trouble sleeping, aggressive behavior or suicidal thoughts are new, worse or worry you. TRINTELLIX has not been evaluated for use in patients under 18. Do not take TRINTELLIX if you are allergic to vortioxetine or any of its ingredients. People taking MAOIs should not take TRINTELLIX. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you are not sure if you take an MAOI, including the antibiotic linezolid. Do not take an MAOI within 21 days of stopping TRINTELLIX, and do not start TRINTELLIX if you stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days.

TRINTELLIX may cause serious side effects including: Serotonin Syndrome: A potentially life-threatening problem that can happen when medicines such as TRINTELLIX are taken with certain other medicines. Symptoms may include agitation, hallucinations, coma or other changes in mental status; problems controlling movements or muscle twitching, stiffness or tightness; fast heartbeat, high or low blood pressure; sweating or fever; nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Abnormal bleeding: Increased risk of bleeding or bruising may occur especially if taken with nonsteroidal anti-inammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, or the blood thinner warfarin. Manic episode: Symptoms may include increased energy; severe trouble sleeping; racing thoughts; reckless behavior; unusually grand ideas; excessive happiness or irritability; talking more or faster than usual. Visual problems: May include eye pain, changes in vision, swelling or redness in or around the eye. Only some people are at risk. You may want to undergo an eye examination to see if you are and receive preventative treatment.

Please see additional Important Safety Information continued on next page.

TRINTELLIX may help you take a step forward in improving your depression. Depression is more than sadness. It’s a tangle of multiple symptoms, such as loss of interest, tiredness, sleeping too much, indecisiveness, and difficulty concentrating. TRINTELLIX is a prescription medicine used to treat the overall symptoms of depression (MDD) in adults. It helped reduce the multiple symptoms of depression based on an overall score on a standardized depression rating scale in multiple 6-8 week studies and one maintenance study vs. sugar pill. Individual results may vary.

This tart-savory kumquat Compote was made for the richness of seared salmon. Intensely sour with a sweet and bitter fi nish, raw kumquats are a bit of an acquired taste, but cooking mellows them nicely.

THE MANY SHADES OF ORANGE Orange varieties share a family resemblance, but—like most siblings and cousins—each variety has its own personality. Mandarins and clementines are sweet and thin-skinned; blood oranges and Cara Caras have darker flesh and hints of berry in their juice. We picked a favorite type to star in each recipe, but the beauty is that you can swap in the kind you’re sweet on or whichever one happens to be at your market.

A CREATIVE COUPLE POURS THEIR HEARTS INTO HANDCRAFTING CERAMICS. REFRESHING THEIR 1800S BROWNSTONE WAS ANOTHER SHARED LABOR OF LOVE. BY J O DY G A R LO C K P H OTO S DAV I D L A N D S T Y L I N G E D D I E R O S S

SOUL

short walk from her 1800s Boston brownstone, magic happens in Jill Rosenwald’s studio. A potter spins a mound of clay into a shapely vase, and painters bring kiln-fired pieces to colorful life. Jill, the plucky ceramicist who started out selling her handmade wares on the streets of New York City, is the do-it-all CEO of her namesake company. Between sketching designs and picking up a paintbrush, she pitches ideas to clients like Neiman Marcus and HomeGoods, packs boxes, and answers the phones. And she’s in her element. “Pattern and color are my life,” says the go-getter whose big personality matches her bold creations. In a room on the other side of the studio loft, Jill’s husband, Lawrence McRae, has laser-sharp focus as he sculpts a lamp base for his line of sleek, modern ceramics. There’s a quieter vibe in his workspace—a sea of neutrals formed by all the white molds and gray clay. It doesn’t take long to see that Jill and Lawrence’s work styles and work itself mirrors their personalities. Those nuances play out in the couple’s home as well. “We do have a little backand-forth on the decorating,” Lawrence says. “I like to have a little breathing space. Jill likes all the surfaces covered.” Jill owns up to her decorating weaknesses. “Picking colors and creating designs for my art comes naturally,” she says. “The stuff in my house is cool; it’s just that I don’t know how to pull it all together.” Cue Jill’s best friend, designer Judith Bigham. When Jill decided she was ready to have “a grown-up house” (aka, no hockey sticks and backpacks in the living room), Bigham made the trip from Seattle to help the couple revamp their home, starting with the living room. “Jill needed someone to say, ‘Let’s get everything out of the room first, then start putting back the things you really love,’” Bigham says. White walls set a clean foundation for a blue and orange scheme. The bold colors and big patterns give the old home a modern vibe. And when kicky orange-and-white curtains finally went up on the windows to finish the room? “Instant fabulosity,” Jill says.

Keep large-scale patterns neutral on foundation pieces to balance colorful patterned pillows.

I DON’T THINK CALMNESS MEANS EVERYTHING IS NEUTRAL. IT MEANS IT’S ALL ORGANIZED, INCLUDING THE PALETTE.

Spreading out color keeps a room balanced. “A lot of times, all the color is at couch level,” designer Judith Bigham says. “You need to vary it so there’s some on the floor and some higher.”

DESIGNER JUDITH BIGHAM

“You can get a whole new vibe just by changing the rug,” Bigham says. (This one is Jill’s Plimpton Flame design.)

JILL’S STUDIO IN BOSTON’S FORT POINT NEIGHBORHOOD is a bustling swirl of activity, where she and a team of artisans and apprentices craft Jill’s signature pattern-happy designs. Q BOWLS AND VASES are

hand-thrown, kiln-fi red, then painted for both regular inventory (sold through Jill’s online shop and in boutiques across the country) and custom collaborations. Q FAVORITE COLOR COMBOS include pale orange and deep pink, often paired with pale gray. “I like things that feel like there’s a calmness and a pop,” Jill says. She also likes to use a range of similar colors. “From the deepest indigo to watery sea and sky blues, they all mix together,” Jill says. “It has everything to do with nature—sky and sea—and it feels safe and calm.” Q

. That’s the easiest way to explain Craft, an Austin studio where visitors spend time creating and everyone shares supplies instead of treadmills and weights. “I love to make things,” says founder Eli Winkelman. “And I remember walking through crafts stores thinking that I wanted to use everything without the burden of owning it all.” She gives members and drop-in guests the chance to do that and opens the doors for groups like the Creative Ladies Night troop, below, who recently took over the space for one of their monthly maker sessions. By day, these women are busy creatives and entrepreneurs, designing light fixtures, floor plans, and stationery; getting together to experiment with new mediums rekindles their creativity. The project this night: marbling paper. Read on to meet the makers, tour the studio, and get ready to throw a marbling party.

THE ST U D I O ”I love the range of ways people use Craft,” says Eli, right. “Some people come in with a specific mission, like, ‘I need to make decorations for a bee-theme baby shower.’ Others need a break and want to play. THE CLASS “I’ve found that doing something— anything—creative is a great form of therapy,” says Claire Brody, left. Teacher for the night Heather Hale agrees: “It is so important for me to step away from the computer and work with my hands. With marbling, the process is so fluid and unpredictable that no matter your experience level, the end result is beautifully unique.” Heather’s keys to success: Confidence; jump in and try different things. And science. “During a trial run, I had an ingredient off by 1 teaspoon and got a completely different result.”

T H E M A R B L I N G H OW-TO Easy to learn and light on supplies, this technique lends itself to experimentation with different papers and paints. The basics: MATERIALS 2 large trays Q Liquid starch Q Alum Q Crafts paints Q White scrapbook paper or cardstock SETUP In one tray, mix a starch bath with 4 cups liquid starch and 1 tsp. alum. Fill the other tray with water. (Note: Trays should be larger than paper.) In cups, dilute 2 parts of each paint color in 3 parts water; stir. 1

TIPS

2

Find alum in the spice aisle at the grocery store.

3

When you’re done with the starch bath, it can go down the drain. Afterward, run water for 1 minute.

4

Use cocktail straws, eyedroppers, or spoons to gently drip paint into the starch bath. The paint should cling to the surface. Continue adding paint until the surface is nearly covered; you can add more later if needed.

Start experimenting. Manipulate your paint by swirling a straw or stick through the painted surface. Drip new paint colors inside other drops of color to form concentric circles. Go slowly, and let paint spread organically.

To create a classic feathered look, drag a rake through the paint. (See how to make a rake at right middle.) Try multiple pulls, different directions, or zigzags. Paint will continue to shift, so have paper ready for the next step.

Slowly lower paper onto the painted starch surface. Once the full sheet is in contact with the surface, peel it back and rinse gently in the tray of water. Lay flat to dry. Repeat the process with clean paper until starch is murky, then start over.

Limit your color palette so you can get more life out of the starch bath. Q

Am I included in the proposed Settlements? The Settlements include the following persons and entities: • Owners or lessees, as of September 19, 2017, of a Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, and • Former owners or lessees of a Honda Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, who, between November 11, 2008 and September 19, 2017, sold or returned pursuant to a lease, a Subject Vehicle that was recalled before September 19, 2017, or • Former owners or lessees of a Nissan Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, who, between April 11, 2013 and September 19, 2017, sold or returned pursuant to a lease, a Subject Vehicle that was recalled before September 19, 2017. A full list of the Honda and Nissan Subject Vehicles can be found at www.AutoAirbagSettlement.com. The Settlements do not involve claims of personal injury. What do the Settlements provide? Honda and Nissan have agreed to Settlements with a combined value of approximately $703 million, including a 10% credit for the Nissan Rental Car/Loaner Program and a 20% credit for the Honda Enhanced Rental Car/Loaner Program. The Settlement Funds will be used to pay for Settlement benefits and cover the costs of the Settlements over an approximately four-year period. The Settlements offer several benefits for Class Members, including (1) payments for certain out-of-pocket expenses incurred related to a Takata airbag recall of a Subject Vehicle, (2) a Rental Car/Loaner Program while certain Subject Vehicles are awaiting repair, (3) an Outreach Program to maximize completion of the recall remedy, (4) additional cash payments to Class Members from residual settlement funds, if any remain, and (5) a Customer Support Program to help with repairs associated with affected Takata airbag inflators and their replacements. The Settlement website explains each of these benefits in detail. How can I get a Payment? You must file a claim to receive a payment during the first four years of the Settlements. If you still own or lease a Subject Vehicle, you must also bring it to an authorized dealership for the recall remedy, as directed by a recall notice, if you have not already done so. Visit the website and file a claim online or download one and file by mail. The deadline to file a claim will be at least one year from the date the Settlements are finalized and will be posted on the website when it’s known. What are my other options? If you do not want to be legally bound by the Settlements, you must exclude yourself by January 8, 2018. If you do not exclude yourself, you will release any claims you may have against Honda and Nissan, in exchange for certain settlement benefits. The potential available benefits are more fully described in the Settlements, available at the settlement website. You may object to the Settlements by January 8, 2018. You cannot both exclude yourself from, and object to, the Settlements. The Long Form Notices for each Settlement available on the website listed below explain how to exclude yourself or object. The Court will hold a fairness hearing on February 7, 2018 to consider whether to finally approve the Settlements and a request for attorneys’ fees of up to 30% of the total Settlement Amount and incentive awards of $5,000 for each of the Class Representatives. You may appear at the fairness hearing, either by yourself or through an attorney hired by you, but you don’t have to. For more information, including the relief, eligibility and release of claims, in English or Spanish, call or visit the website below.

lycopene Found in many red-pink fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit, lycopene has been shown to stop inflammationcausing proteins from activating. Want to get even more lycopene? Turn tomatoes into sauce: Cooking them in olive oil concentrates the lycopene and boosts their absorption.

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in keeping your body’s cells strong and protecting them against compounds called free radicals, which attack your cells and can lead to inflammation, Cohn says. And inflammation is at the root of so many ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, even allergies. The omega-3s in seafood (like sardines, salmon, and tuna) are especially easy for your body to absorb, so aim to eat it once or twice a week. More good sources: walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds. Take a Walk It’s the simplest form of exercise and everyone has time for 10 minutes! Incremental exercise throughout the day helps improve blood pressure, promotes circulation, and increases your energy level. Just Breathe Stress ages the body and taking even one minute to concentrate on your breath can help lower heart rate and allow you time to reflect on self-care. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, allowing your shoulders to drop, and your heart and mind to be lifted.

Oats Support a Healthy and Energetic Lifestyle When whole grains break down into energy, it’s absorbed slowly, providing energy that lasts. With the added nutritional bonus of thiamin, phosphorous, and magnesium, Quaker® Oats help support a healthy and energetic lifestyle so you can be prepared for all that lies ahead. Find them at your local retailer so you can start your morning off strong.

When you feed yourself some oats, the oats feed your body fiber. That fiber helps keep things moving through your intestines and colon. Which is great. Definitely want to keep that colon chuggin’ along.*

1951 PINK

Rose, blush, or millennial pink: By any name, this dusty color is none too sweet. TH E O RI G I NAL The current craze for millennial pink continues to gain steam, but BH&G was using it as a room-anchoring neutral in August 1951. It balanced the heavy stone wall and lent the space a warm but airy vibe. TH E U PDATE A hint of chalkiness makes today’s pinks ultra adaptable. Hits of wood or industrial materials (like powder-coated steel) mean these streamlined products defy the color’s feminine reputation.
