YOUR EXFOLIATING HABITS
Exfoliation is generally a good thing because it removes dead skin cells that make skin look dull. But if you do it too often, are too abrasive, or combine multiple exfoliators, “You risk stripping away the natural oils and healthy bacteria that keep your skin balanced. And that can lead to irritation,” says Whitney Bowe, M.D., dermatologist and author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin. If your skin is inflamed, quit exfoliating until it returns to normal. Then rethink how you exfoliate. Pick one method—a scrub with soft or rounded particles, a washcloth, or a cleansing tool—but don’t use them together, Bowe says. (Try St. Ives Gentle Smoothing Oatmeal Scrub & Mask, $5; drugstores.) Finally, limit exfoliation to twice a week, max. “Most people can’t tolerate more than that,” Bowe says.

Is your face red, dry, or itchy? The key to soothing the irritation lies in figuring out what, exactly, caused your skin to freak out. Here, a few clues.
NATURAL SENSITIVITIES
Sensitive skin might be a clue that you have a skin condition that has not been diagnosed. For example, the tendency to blush or flush, along with persistent redness on your cheeks, forehead, and chin, are common signs of rosacea. Eczema also causes irritation and dry, flaky skin. Both conditions are best treated under a dermatologist’s care. However, pink, dry skin that isn’t that itchy may just be a reaction to certain ingredients or a sign that your skin care routine is too aggressive. In that case, dial back and use products labeled fragrancefree or designed for baby skin or eczema, which are less likely to upset skin, Bowe says. (Try Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream, $12; drugstores.)

If you had eczema, allergies, or asthma as a child, you’ll be prone to sensitive skin as an adult.
Cold air equals dry air. “If the air is dry, it sucks the moisture out of the skin and compromises the skin barrier,” says Bostonbased dermatologist Emmy Graber, M.D., referring to the layer of skin that defends against irritants and holds in moisture. Weakening this layer leaves skin vulnerable to irritation. Indoor heating can have a similarly drying effect, creating a lose-lose situation for skin in the winter. To keep your skin barrier strong and functioning properly, use a cream with ingredients that help trap and retain moisture like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or both. Expressive home design doesn’t always require major-league replacements. Take a lesson from this home, which tweaks some of today’s trends.
I
t can be tricky to keep a popular style from veering toward same old, same old. When planning their Mill Valley, CA, home, Jen and Lenny Hochschild were drawn to country farmhouses, including white kitchens, “but we didn’t want it to look like every other kitchen,” Jen says. “We said, ‘Let’s do something different.’” That mantra held true through the whole-house design, guided by architect Heidi Richardson and designer Jennifer Tidwell. They rethought conventional floor plan labels and refreshed familiar styles in each room. Interior designer Allison Bloom completed the spaces with furnishings and fabrics chosen for comfort and flexibility.

No one has to be sent to this corner in Helen and Robbie Thompson’s home on Boston’s South Shore. Their three sons, Finn, Bennett, and Jules, happily go to the inviting spot that solved a couple of problems. “We had piles of books in boxes and stacked in closets,” Helen says. ”Our library nook makes finding a good book so much easier.” Key to its use is showing book covers so kids can identify titles by the cover art rather than by trying to read spines. Books spread out on ledges, slip into the canvas slings of a bookcase (similar styles at kidkraft.com), and queue up in a wooden bin Helen built for about $50. Inspired by ideas on Pinterest, Helen designed and built a book bin with three sections . Ready-made table legs attach to mounting plates. Painting the bin was the hardest part because Helen didn’t want the knots in the pine to show through. “I thought a couple of coats of semigloss

would do it, but I should have used a primer,” she says. An alternative to pine: medium-density fiberboard, which takes paint well.

wenty years ago, Charles McKee stood under a winter full moon on the backyard skating rink he’d created for his four daughters and had a brilliant idea. “It was the most Zen garden feeling out on the ice,” he says. “I thought, Wouldn’t it be fun to throw a party here?” The next month he gathered 30 neighbors for a Moon Over Ice (skating) party, and a tradition was born. Generations of friends and neighbors now take turns organizing the event. A roaring fi re inside and a chiminea near the hockey benches ward off chills. But the point of the party is to take a break from being inside during the long winter months, spend time skating together, and enjoy a meal with friends. The group doesn’t merely embrace the cold, they celebrate it. Candles twinkle in DIY ice lanterns, branches stand in snow-fi lled vases, and Champagne chills in powdery drifts. On the menu, if it isn’t on the rocks (chilled shrimp or aquavit served in tiny glasses made of ice) then it’s winter white— white lasagna and White Russians. The McKees lay down thick vintage rugs over part of their rink then set out a long line of tables there. Guests skate the rink perimeter until it’s time to take a seat for dinner.
FROZEN LUMINARIAS Everyone pitches in on food and crafts for the party. Kara Sullivan, far left, makes the ice luminarias by suspending small jars in tin cans filled with water and foraged clippings. Once frozen, the jars come out and tea lights go in.

The Home Ice Rink
Home rinks are fairly common in Wisconsin. Charles McKee has built one every winter since 1978, when his daughters were young. These days, Charles and neighborhood friends use it for casual hockey games. The basics: LEVE L IT Ideally you want a level spot; measure your yard’s slope and adjust if necessary. F R AM E IT Charles builds a wooden frame (similar to a raised garden bed) to hold silage film, which is secured to the frame with Amazing Goop and Hurricane Tape to make a waterproof barrier. F R E E Z E IT Forecasted daytime temps should be below freezing for at least a week when you fill the rink. CAKE ASSEMBLY 1. Spoon half of the cake batter into prepared pan (reserve 1.5 cups for another layer). Deposit ⅓ of cheesecake mixture in the center of the blueberry cake layer, spreading to within 1” of the edge of pan. Pour remaining cake batter over the cheesecake mixture, spreading to the edge. Top with remaining ⅔ of the cheesecake mixture, spreading to 1” of the edge. Sprinkle remaining ¼ cup blueberries in the top cheesecake portion. 2. Bake in preheated oven for 55-65 min. Check at 30 min. If already starting to brown, cover loosely with foil. Remove from oven when cake sides are a golden brown with a soft set to the cheesecake center. The gallery wall started with the least attractive piece: the television. “There was only one wall where it could go, so we wanted to camouflage it,” Davis says. The photography, landscapes, and abstract paintings in soft colors don’t vie for attention when the TV is on.
stark white box: That was the best way to describe this new build in Santa Monica, CA, when interior designer Jessica Davis started decorating it. To warm the space for a young family, the Nest Studio designer added architectural details like shiplap and built-ins then mixed in vintage and new furnishings. Against those rich layers, the white walls now feel fresh rather than clinical. “We wanted a space that felt comfortable and collected but still had that element of California cool,” she says.

USING HEIGHT
Vintage rugs, like the one the homeowners fell in love with, above, “aren’t usually sized for today’s living,” Davis says. By layering the rug on a beachy seagrass one, she was able to make it work in this large space. Davis hits Etsy for antique rugs from countries like Turkey. (She found the kitchen runner on the site.)
One of Davis’ favorite ways to divide an open-plan space is to change the ceiling heights and lighting. The dropped ceiling of the kitchen, for example, “makes it feel like its own room while still being open to the rest of the space,” she says. The low-hung pendants underscore the division. IT’S A STILL MORNING AT THE NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDEN, AND CLUSTERS OF WATER LILIES APPEAR TO MULTIPLY IN THE REFLECTION OF A POND. Aquatics specialist Danny Cox pulls on his chest-high waders, quickly scans for gators, and glides into the water to check on the flowers, which are colorful and exotic-looking with a fragrance reminiscent of the tropics. “Water lilies are the sexy part of water gardening,” he says. Their beauty is only part of their allure for gardeners like Danny, however. It’s also their sheer strangeness. The plants have adapted all kinds of features to survive in water: spongy pads and waxy petals, spikes to deter predators, and stalks that function almost like snorkels. Then there are the famous giants—the Victoria types—with pads reaching as much as 10 feet across. That spectacle draws crowds to this garden on the Gulf Coast of Florida, where Danny oversees about 300 water lilies, but he points out that the flowers can also thrive on a much smaller scale, such as a pot on a patio. He has fi lled his own backyard with containers full of water lilies. Each day before he heads to work, he quietly appreciates their blossoms and the frogs, blue jays, and dragonflies they attract. “Water lilies draw you in,” he says, “and connect you to nature in a deeper way.”

1. Set an oven rack close to the broiler heat source while still able to fit the baking sheet between the rack and the broiler (3 to 4 inches from heat). Set broiler to high. 2. 1. Put onion in a resealable jar; pour vinegar and salt over. Seal jar and shake vigorously to coat the onion with the salt and vinegar. 2. 1. Heat oil in an 8-qt. stock pot or Dutch oven over medium-high. Add sausage and break it up with a wooden spoon into bite-size pieces. Let sausage pieces cook without stirring until brown on the bottom, 2 to 3 minutes. Using tongs, flip sausage pieces over and leave them until cooked through and golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes more. 2. Transfer sausage to a plate lined with paper towels, leaving the fat and oil behind in the pan. Cover sausage with aluminum foil to keep in any moisture; set aside.

3. Return pot to medium and add onions, oregano, fennel seeds, 1 tsp. salt, and 1 tsp. pepper. Cook, stirring often, until the onions are translucent and soft, 10 to 12 minutes. Add potatoes, stock, and, if desired, bay leaf. Cover and bring to boiling over high heat, then reduce to a simmer and cook until potatoes are fork-tender, 8 to 10 minutes. 4. Stir in beans, kale, and reserved sausage. Cook until beans are heated through. Fish out bay leaf, stir in vinegar, and season with salt and pepper. 5. SOUP TOPPER A lacy cheese wafer not only looks pretty on any of these soup recipes but also adds crunch and richness. Coarsely shred 6 oz. Parmesan cheese. Line a baking sheet with nonstick foil or parchment paper. Place about 1 Tbsp. shredded cheese on prepared sheet; pat into a 2-inch circle. Repeat with remaining cheese, allowing 2 inches between circles. Bake 7 to 8 minutes at 400°F or until bubbly and light golden. Let stand on baking sheet 1 to 2 minutes or until cooled but still pliable. Carefully peel crisps off foil or paper. Let cool on a wire rack.

Remove cheese rind. Puree the soup in batches in a blender or with a handheld immersion blender. Stir in the lemon juice and 1 tsp. salt. 4.
