Take a minute and think of the houses you grew up in. Whether or not those spaces still exist, I’ll bet you can picture dozens of details about the rooms: where the armchairs were, where the TV stood, what the floor lamp looked like, even what knickknack or book was on what shelf. In most people’s houses, things tend to fi nd a place and stay there for years—if not decades. Why does this happen? Maybe we like the continuity of a certain arrangement of furniture and objects, or maybe we stop seeing our belongings during the comings and goings of our everyday lives. My house is no different. I tend to leave things where I fi rst put them. A houseplant in that corner. This side table with this lamp and this bowl over there. I rarely give such objects a second thought, but I’m challenging myself to mix things up. I’m going to rotate several key pieces of photography and artwork on the wall. I’ll curate a new collection of things for the mantel. Who knows? I might go crazy and rearrange the bedroom furniture. Most of us

Tinted lip balm packs more hydration than a lipstick or lip gloss.

FACE

Squeaky-clean skin can lead to redness or irritation, especially in the winter. To keep your complexion soft and glowy, wash nightly with a cleanser free of sulfates, which can strip the skin of protective oils. “In the morning, recleansing isn’t usually needed,” says Boston dermatologist Emmy Graber, M.D. Instead, splash with water, pat your face, and while it’s still damp, slather on a rich cream to seal the moisture into your skin. Prone to breakouts? In that case, opt for a gel cream moisturizer instead. “They have less of a tendency to sit in—and clog—pores, but they’re still very hydrating,” Graber says.

BODY

LIPS

An ointmentlike balm with a petrolatum base is best for soothing chapped lips. “It’s the most effective at sealing in moisture because it gets between skin cells,” Gohara says. (Try Glossier Balm Dotcom, $12; glossier .com.) If you find an ointment too messy and prefer a stick formula, pick a solid balm with

TLC FOR HANDS Your hands have a raw deal between winter conditions and frequent handwashing. Avoid drying antibacterial soaps, and carry hand cream so you can moisturize after washing. ingredients like shea butter, oils, or glycerin to smooth and pamper your pout. (Try Eos Crystal Lip Balm, $5; target.com.) Finally, avoid bad habits like licking your lips, which is drying, and picking dead skin. The best way to remove flakes is to gently rub your lips with a wet washcloth in the shower while your skin is soft from the humidity.

FEET

A few times a week, rub on a lotion with an exfoliator like alpha hydroxy acid, then put on socks. Now your entire day— or night if you do this before bed—doubles as a foot treatment. Already have cracks? Gently file your heel with a foot file. (Try Tweezerman Sole Smoother, $20; tweezerman.com.) Then dab Super Glue on the cracks. Yes, Super Glue: “Literally put a drop in the crack. It will dry, seal it, and allow the skin to fill in from the bottom up to heal it,” says Chicago dermatologist Carolyn Jacob, M.D. “The foot also won’t hurt so much.” Finish by slathering on the exfoliating foot cream and, of course, slipping on socks. Q

Long, hot showers; harsh soaps; rough scrubbers (like loofahs); and skimpy hydration all contribute to a dry, itchy body. Because you probably don’t want to give up that steam on a chilly morning, try to minimize your skin’s exposure to the hot water. “Keep your shower quick—10 minutes or less—and step away from the direct stream of hot water when you lather or shave,” advises Connecticut dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D. The cleansing process washes away some of the body’s natural oils, so look for a replenishing body wash or bar containing ceramides or other hydrators. While your skin is still damp—before even starting to towel off—slather on a thick body cream packed with ingredients like dimethicone or petrolatum to prevent dryness.

Multitasking is a way of life for Grace Mitchell, a design blogger and mom of four. So rather than let a spare room sit empty, she redesigned it to be part office, part guest room, and full-on chic. G R AC E S NAG G E D TH I S VI NTAG E ART F RO M R E TAI L S ITE AGAI N & AGAI N ’S I N STAG R AM SALE .

1

CLOSE QUARTERS Because of the room’s small footprint, Grace Mitchell had to be clever when picking and placing furniture. Her trick for saving floor space? Choosing pieces that go up rather than out. Tall, shallow shelving units flanking a petite campaign-style desk take advantage of the 9-foot ceilings. Plus, putting the office furniture along one wall preserves the guest room feel.

2

GLAM REHAB “I wanted a space that was light and bright, that I would feel inspired in,” Grace says. So she gave the shelving units a makeover with coats of white lacquer on the shelves and gold leaf on the framework. To quickly update the desk, Grace added brass hardware and a vinyl top embossed with an alligator-skin pattern. Vintage typewriters and leopard-print lampshades add retro glitz.

3

PRETTY STORAGE So guests don’t feel like they’re staying in an office, Grace hides paperwork and crafting supplies in neutral storage boxes labeled with gold tags.

This handy couple replaced their “chaos corner” with a double-duty cabinet that hides electronic equipment and expands seating in their living room. Call Lauren and Robert Shaver in-thebox thinkers. To stow electronic components near a TV mounted above the fi replace in their Rock Hill, SC, home, they made a window seat from a kitchen cabinet. Now their TV receiver, surround sound receiver, and game console/Blu-ray player hide behind cabinet doors. Cord covers guide the TV wiring across the mantel, down the wall, and through a cutout in the corner of the cabinet. The window seat, which took about eight hours to build, gets plenty of use. “Our 5-year-old daughter, Olivia, loves to sprawl out on it,” Lauren says, “and it’s great overfl ow seating for guests.” Take a closer look on page 34.

WHAT THEY DID

Robert and Lauren built their window seat from a ready-made cabinet, saving them from having to fi nish the interior or build doors.

1

THE CABINET

The best cabinet for Robert and Lauren’s spot was a bridge cabinet—the kind typically used over a range, refrigerator, or sink to fill the space between cabinets. (Theirs came from homedepot.com.) Robert cut out the panels in the cabinet doors and stapled on two aluminum sheets to hide the electronic equipment yet allow remote controls to work when the doors are closed. He also

34

cut out a wide section of the cabinet back to ease access to the TV cords.

2

THE FRAME

After removing the baseboard and quarter round trim in the nook, Robert and Lauren built a base on the floor out of 2×4s to support the cabinet. The couple mounted the cabinet to the base and added 2×4 vertical supports in each nook corner and around the outside of the cabinet to hold it in place and make it

strong enough for seating. They built a plywood face on both sides of the cabinet and reinstalled the old baseboard and quarter round trim along the front.

3

TH E WI RI N G FITS I N A GAP B E H I N D TH E CAB I N ET.

THE SEAT

It consists of two boards attached to the vertical supports. One has a cutout in the back corner for the cords. Lauren got lucky with a readymade cushion that fit. Bonus: It’s covered in easy-clean indooroutdoor fabric. Q

GARDEN INDOOR PLANTS

For years, orchids have had a reputation for being expensive, high-maintenance divas. Now that they’re so much easier to find (and afford) at florists and grocery stores, we share stylish new ways to showcase these exotic—but surprisingly accessible—beauties.

DISH GARDEN Moth orchids (phalaenopsis), driftwood, and rocks create a display that’s both elegant and rugged. Remove orchids from their nursery pot, cover the roots with moistened sheet moss, and secure with florists wire (if needed). Use branch crannies and rocks to support the orchids. Pour a cup of water over root balls once a week. Element Metal Silver Tray, $70; crateandbarrel.com

No soil needed: In the wild, orchids pull nutrients from the air and rain. Inside, they prefer fastdraining bark or sphagnum moss.

You won’t miss the Valentine’s Day restaurant crowds. #PARTYBOARD Our Instagram feeds are flooded with photos of casual party boards. Cheese boards, for sure, but also snack boards, tapas boards, and even dessert boards have taken over social media.

THE MENU Our take on the trend is an updated steakhouse spread with beef shoulder tenders (or go for beef tenderloin), roasted potatoes, old-school iceberg wedge salads, and chilled shrimp with a cocktail sauce that has an herbal spin. ilary Duff is a busy working mother: In addition to reprising her lead role in TV Land’s bingeable dramedy Younger, she is also an author, musician, and personal driver to her 5-year-old son, Luca. But that hasn’t stopped her from getting lost on Pinterest for hours like the rest of us. “I live on it,” she says, with a generous laugh. “I make boards all day.” Hilary’s design eye is drawn to vibrant, showstopping patterns. When she recently gave her Los Angeles house a facelift, she wasn’t shy about featuring them center stage. She covered a wall in the kitchen with oversize zigzag-pattern tiles and repeated them on a dining counter on the back patio. She hung a colorful, kaleidoscopic painting above an equally eye-dazzling credenza in the living room, and she dressed the main staircase in a runner sewn from three vintage Turkish kilims. “Cutting up the rugs to make them fit exactly was so stressful,” she says. To pull it all together, Hilary worked with interior designers Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl of Studio Life.Style. They systematically dialed back the rest of the furniture around every punchy color and statement piece Hilary chose. “Hilary wanted her home to feel feminine and modern but definitely lived-in and cozy,” Wollack

says. To achieve this look, they mixed contemporary pieces in alluring silhouettes with antique furnishings for aged appeal. They were careful about not adding too much of one style in order to keep an even mix in each room. “It was a balancing act,” Zwickl says. “The key was merging all the elements together and keeping scale in mind.” Consequently, each room’s quirky decor works together so the whole house flows and feels high-spirited. Whenever Hilary gets seduced by an object’s shape, color, or vibe, she gets in touch with her practical side. “This house is a sanctuary for me and Luca, so I always shop with him in mind,” she says. “He’s respectful of our belongings,

62

but I want him to be able to roughhouse and do other kid things here.” A long-term second consideration stems from her love of timeless things that tell a story. “Whenever I’m on the verge of buying something—whether a chair or a pair of earrings—I ask myself, Will I still love it when I get to be 60 or 70?” For someone so tuned in to longevity, Hilary owns few family heirlooms, although her grandmother’s brass cookbook stand is in constant use. “I see the things I’m acquiring along the way—the rugs, the art, and anything that Luca makes—as new collectibles,” she says. “As a result, the house feels full of memories and also of opportunities— new, old, and yet-to-come.”

“The tiles screamed at me when I first saw them,” Hilary says of the Ann Sacks pattern. “They were so happy. I knew they’d bring a jolt of energy into the house.” Besides letting in light, a folding glass door maintains a seamless transition between the garden and dining room, where a contemporary chandelier contrasts with a rustic table and a set of well-used chairs.

“This house is so versatile; it allows us to open up all the doors and have fun,” says Hilary, playing with her Bernese mountain dog, Dubois. Besides Dubois and Jak, she also owns a chug (Chihuahuapug) named Momo.

The designers added recessed shelves in the living room to house Hilary’s collection of art and design books. In keeping with her personality-rich style, she mixed in mementos and other objects for a layered effect.

In the entry hall, a cluster of eclectic furnishings—an intricate midcentury credenza, Gothic spool chair, and oversize mirror framed in leather and tiger maple bands—makes a striking first impression.

Hilary loves to cook, and California’s yearround good weather made bringing the kitchen outdoors a no-brainer. In the backyard, the kitchen’s graphic Ann Sacks tiles make a repeat appearance.

CORAL KICK To warm the blueand-white scheme, designer Brooke Voss helped Lindsay work in coral accents—a more traditional color than hot pink but more playful than red. Voss placed garden stools in the foyer, left, and had living room pillows, opposite, upholstered in a fabric Lindsay remembers from her childhood home.

White cabinetry, tile, and counters, plus a royal blue range and accents, carry the color scheme into the kitchen.

ROOM TO MOVE STUDY BREAK Tucked in the space between the kitchen and dining room is a little nook, left, for perusing recipes and studying spelling words. To make the area feel like a seamless extension of the kitchen, Lindsay used the same countertops and backsplash.

Architect Andrea Swan helped the couple rethink their floor plan, opening the previously cramped kitchen to a new family room, below, carved from the old garage. Living in the space for a year before remodeling also changed Lindsay’s thoughts on storage. “I changed everything to open shelving,” she says. “I didn’t think I was that modern or organized before.” Q

GADGET STATION Lindsay and Lou wanted their kitchen to feel like it was transplanted from a Parisian apartment. They got the effect with countertopto-ceiling white subway tile and a collection of copper pots they were finally able to pull out of storage, right.

Chocolate, for me, is about celebration.” That’s why Amy and her pal, floral designer Natalie Bowen Brookshire, chose chocolate as the theme for their modern take on an age-old tradition: afternoon tea. Today, they are hosting a gathering of their girlfriends for a grown-up tea party that’s more fun than fussy. “In February there’s so much talk about romance, but we also have an opportunity to nurture relationships that aren’t romantic—our friendships,” Natalie says. The two women bring their expertise to the table, quite literally. Amy, an avid baker who penned the Guittard Chocolate Cookbook, creates a simple menu of finger foods sharing a common ingredient: chocolate. “There are so many varieties: single origin and blends; bittersweet, milk, and white,” Amy says. “I love finding ways to incorporate them in recipes, both sweet and savory.” She adds shaved chocolate to the top of her chicken salad sandwiches (it adds surprising depth to an otherwise expected dish, Amy says) and updates the traditional PB&J with a chocolate-cashew spread

and smashed berries. Her not-too-sweet signature tart marries Earl Grey tea and dark chocolate. “Our beverage incorporates chocolate flavor, too,” says Natalie, who makes a light tisane by steeping handfuls of fresh chocolate mint (a variety with a faint chocolate scent) picked from her garden. “I’ve been making this since I was a child, sipping it with my mom and grandmother,” she says. “Our tea parties weren’t fancy, but we made them special with the presentation. There were always flowers on the table, and I was usually responsible for putting them there.” This gathering is no exception. Natalie adds life to the table with simple, artful arrangements. “Various shades of lavender and pink, from quite pale to very bold, create a unified look,” Natalie says. She brings extra flowers for the gathering’s group activity: making posies to take home. “I love engaging in something creative with my friends, where we put our phones away and relish an afternoon doing something different,” Natalie says. Amy agrees. “I think we need to slow down more and consider the most important ingredient of our friendships, which is spending quality time together.”

Natalie recommends buying bunches of a few kinds of flowers in a monochromatic scheme. She supplies enough that each guest has about eight flowers (a couple of every variety). Tulips, carnations, ranunculuses, lisianthuses, and roses work well. Snipping stems to about 10 inches long means they fit nicely in a half sheet of gift wrap or kraft paper tied with about half a yard of velvet or silk ribbon.

Wood pedestals and brass tiered stands add eclecticism to the party table. The party’s tea is an herbal tisane Natalie makes with chocolate mint leaves. Sparkling rosé and pomegranate juice pair up in Jen’s sweet-tart cocktail. Amy sends guests home with her Chocolate, Date, and Almond Bars—a favorite snack—and makes little round chocolate bites with nuts. CHOCOLATE & FLOWERS

“ Chocolate has this incredible power to turn an ordinary moment into a celebration,” says Amy Guittard of the Guittard Chocolate Company. But you have to use the correct kind for the best results. Each recipe lists a preferred cacao percentage—the amount of chocolate, by weight, from cacao beans—and type (dark, bittersweet, etc.). However, cacao percentages and type names vary between manufacturers. Make sure to use a similar percentage, but if it’s not listed, use the type called for. For easy conversions between ounces and cups, see the chart on page 85.

WEIGHT LOSS The link between sugar consumption and increased body fat has long been known. Too much sugar in the diet promotes more insulin, the fat storing hormone, and thus more body fat.

2 8

THE SLIMMING EFFECT OF STABLE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS

R

ecently an Italian study of a sugar-blocking supplement showed significant weight loss results.1 The supplement, called Zuccarin, produced on average 20 pounds of weight loss, in the 90 day study.

The subjects lost 10% of their body weight and lost 3 times the weight of the control group, who were also on a 1300 calorie controlled diet, but not taking the Zuccarin supplement. In addition, the subjects also experienced healthier blood sugar levels after using Zuccarin. The explanation for the weight loss is that Zuccarin uses mulberry leaf extract and chromium to promote healthy blood sugar levels. Mulberry leaf has shown to reduce the absorption of sugars in the foods we eat. When these sugars are undigested, our blood sugar stabilizes and, according to experts, weight loss can occur. 1- ‘‘White Mulberry Supplement as Adjuvant Treatment of Obesity”, Journal of Biological Regulators and Homeostatics Agents., Vol 28, no.1, 2014.

Known As: Influencer, Friend, Mentor, Adventurer, Movement Artist Goals for One Strong Day: I always aim to nourish my mind and body with great food and exercise, and challenge myself to learn something new. And, if I can manage to get in 100 pushups throughout the day, even better!

Today’s Accomplishments: I woke up from a full, quality night of sleep—I set an alarm to remind me to prep for bed. A breakfast made with lean protein, healthy fats, and whole grains helps keep me fueled for boogie boarding with my husband. Ending the day with a little meditation was the best way to unwind and de-stress.

Can’t Start the Day Without: A hot cup of tea and a healthy

Andrea Metcalf Fitness and nutrition expert shares how to keep your heart healthy.

It starts with real nutrition

First Things First Skipping breakfast may be associated with weight gain. Maintaining a healthy body weight is one key to cutting your risk for heart disease. Start with a healthy breakfast including whole grains, fruits, and protein while avoiding the highsaturated fats like bacon. Food for Thought Oatmeal provides soluble fiber, which may help you feel full and has been shown to help lower cholesterol as part of a diet low in saturated fat. Simplicity is Key Who says you can’t eat the same thing several times a week? Stress less in the morning with a simple breakfast that’ll make mornings a breeze. Oatmeal makes it easy to customize with your favorite mix-ins, which makes your taste buds—and heart—happy!

balanced breakfast, like Quaker® Oats and berries, are my go-tos. Maintaining a heart-healthy diet is paramount for me.

Helper of Hearts Food plays an important role in heart health. Whole grains—in particular oats—have been repeatedly shown to lower blood cholesterol, thanks to the soluble fiber called beta-glucan. Three grams of soluble oat fiber daily in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Old Fashioned Quaker® Oats has two grams per serving. Find Quaker® Oats at your local retailer.

the health nut

Our intrepid health director, Amy Brightfield, pours her heart out to a cardiologist.

F

ebruary is women’s heart-health awareness month, and as your resident health nut, I felt it was my duty to get a full-on heart-health check from a cardiologist who specializes in women. Consider it a guide of sorts to what your internist should be going over during your annual exams. Before I even saw Stacey Rosen, M.D., with the Women’s Heart Health Program at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health in New York, I fi lled out an eight-page(!) questionnaire. It not only covered my medical history but also my eating, exercise, and sleep habits, plus stress levels. “Your entire lifestyle impacts your heart health,” says Reva Gajer, the nurse practitioner who spent a good 30 minutes discussing my answers. The importance of the questions was in their specifi city. It wasn’t just, Do you exercise? But also, How many minutes a week? Do you increase your heart rate? I thought I’d get an A+ because I do strength training and two cycling classes each week. But Stacey said, “Moderate daily exercise is important, too.” She suggested

weaving brisk walking (going between errands as if I’m late) into my daily routine. Of course diet has a HUGE impact on heart disease, and the questionnaire asked how much produce I eat a day (fi ve sevings is the minimum) and how much alcohol I drink. (One 5-ounce glass of wine a day is protective, and no, you can’t stockpile for weekends.) Uncontrolled stress can harm your heart, so the mini quiz teased out my state of mind with questions like, In the last month, how often have you felt anxious? Do you sleep well? Also worth noting: complications during pregnancy, which is basically a stress test for your heart. High blood pressure or gestational diabetes puts you at an increased risk of heart disease for fi ve to 15 years after giving birth. A few days postexam, Reva called about my blood work. “You’re the most boring patient I’ve ever met,” she said. My good cholesterol (HDL) is 112, and my bad (LDL) is 93—a relief because my mom and dad have high cholesterol. “This is the portrait of someone who eats right and exercises.” Health nut mission accomplished. Matcha powder is finely ground leaves of tencha, a shade-grown tea. You consume the leaves themselves, giving you a higher concentration of antioxidants than in a cup of steeped green tea. (But it’s difficult to quantify its benefits as an ingredient in other foods.)

WHITE This pale, subtly sweet tea is the least oxidized (the process of allowing leaves to wither and air-dry after being picked), making it a rich source of antioxidants like polyphenols. Studies show they can help raise good cholesterol and reduce infl ammation. Early research also suggests they may help prevent the growth of cancer cells. CAFFEINE COUNT

15–20 mg per cup

GREEN A slightly more complicated drying process preserves green tea’s intense color and flavor. It also results in a high concentration of polyphenols. CAFFEINE COUNT

20–30 mg per cup

OOLONG Once withered, the leaves are gently bruised to spur oxidation then fi red to remove more moisture. Oolong is partially oxidized so antioxidants

called fl avonoids form. Studies show that oolong tea can help stabilize blood sugar levels and may lower diabetes risk. CAFFEINE COUNT

30–50 mg per cup

BLACK The leaves of this most oxidized tea are allowed to wither then are rolled or crushed to start rapid oxidation. Its dark hue comes from a high concentration of thearubigins and theafl avins, antioxidants that may lower cholesterol. CAFFEINE COUNT

40–60 mg per cup

HERBAL BREWS Also known as tisanes, these aren’t technically tea because they’re made from dried herbs, not the Camellia sinensis leaf. Many have proven health benefits, like ginger (for nausea) and chamomile (for tummy upset and irritable bowel syndromerelated symptoms). Q

WALKING A PUPPY UPS YOUR SPEED 28% .

S A M S O N “I was a total couch potato with high blood pressure and cholesterol,” Hillary Zody says. “I found my inner exerciser when I rescued 11-year-old Samson in 2006.” Hillary started walking with Samson; he enjoyed the exercise, and Hillary was surprised to find she did, too. In fact, research shows that dog owners are active for 30 minutes more a day than non-dog owners. Even without diet changes, Hillary lost 10 pounds and lowered her blood pressure and cholesterol. Although Samson has passed away, Hillary has kept up her routine, exercising with the three dogs she has now. “Our walks give me time to reflect and gather my thoughts. If I have to skip one, I feel like my day is missing something.”

So Alex started walking, then running, with him every morning. “First, we only did a quarter mile,” she says. They quickly ran farther and more often. Alexandra starting losing weight, and Cooper’s limp improved. Now the pair run three days a week and take a daily morning walk. “I wouldn’t miss our time together for the world.”

radiating pain from her chest to her jaw, her 13-year-old cat, Jasmine, would bat at the left side of Stephanie’s chest. “Jasmine’s behavior spurred my husband to take me to the emergency room last New Year’s Eve during one of the episodes,” Stephanie says. The diagnosis: supraventricular tachycardia (an abnormally fast heart rate). Today, Stephanie takes medication to help control her condition, but she gives Jasmine props for playing a huge role in her wellbeing. “Jazzie’s purring is the best medicine.” I L LU S T R AT I O N S G E N E V R A B E L L

BOGART

Alicia McKay has battled anxiety and depression since she was young. But everything changed when Alicia was matched with Bogart, a now 6-year-old German shepherd trained to recognize Alicia’s panic attacks. “When Bogart senses that I’m going into an anxiety spiral, he diverts my attention with little groans or by shoving his head into my hands or arms,” Alicia says. Across the country, service dogs help people with anxiety disorders live full lives. While Bogart has given Alicia courage to do daily activities like take public transportation, he also inspired her to achieve bigger goals: In October 2016, Alicia ran her first half-marathon with Bogart by her side. “He gave me the chance to really live.” Q
