Remember mood rings? I know I’m dating myself here, but as a kid, I was obsessed for one hot Texas summer about the idea that the “jewel” in those rings could indicate how a person was feeling emotionally: Pink was happy, black was depressed, blue was optimistic. My little glass oval was often an indecipherable shade of puce, which worried me a little—but only until I moved on to the next fad (pet rocks). This year while producing our annual color issue, we looked at the long-standing link between color and psychology and how certain parts of the color spectrum have been used in interior design over time. Traditionally speaking, a den or library feels cozy when painted in dark colors like brown or forest green. A kitchen seems happy and inviting in light yellow. A bold red dining room has long been thought to stimulate the appetite. Conversely, a vivid red or orange bedroom might feel more frenetic than relaxing. We approached our “In the Mood for Color” story (page 102) with the simple idea of looking at what new color trends might alter our collective mood. Soft shell pink (lately called millennial pink because of its

COLOR THEORY

popularity on social media) is calm and optimistic in a bedroom or living room. Gray, an almost ubiquitous neutral for the past few years, gives a dignified air. Dark tones like indigo or emerald green transform a space into a sophisticated, old-world statement. Whatever your favorite color, there’s probably a room (and mood) for it. But at the end of the day—and best of all— we are merely talking about paint and not a high-stakes renovation. The simple act of changing a wall color can quickly transform your entire house or apartment. So don’t be afraid to experiment. As we all know, emotions can change quickly and walls STEPHEN ORR, can always be Editor in Chief repainted when instagram @steporr the mood strikes. twitter @orrsteporr

Having studied architecture, Marie-Laure is an admirer of Ponce’s mix of industrial building and upscale atmosphere. She recently opened a kiosk in the market. poncecitymarket.com

“It’s the oldest farmers market in the city and the only one fully certified organic,” Marie-Laure says. The market is open Saturday mornings year-round. morningsidemarket.com

Le Jardin Français isn’t the kind of place you go to snag a quick bouquet for date night. Founder MarieLaure isn’t about to let you leave without learning something. And why would you want to hurry out? The shop overflows with buckets spilling flowers and branches you can browse and pick as you please, and Marie-Laure is there to guide you. “My school was the garden,” MarieLaure says of her time in France, where she grew up working for her family’s gardendesign business and went on to craft flower arrangements for clients like Louis Vuitton before moving to Atlanta 20 years ago. Now she’s the teacher, showing visitors how to build a bouquet rond—stems arranged in hand and tied before being put in a vase—and telling them how to make the flowers last longer. (She revives wilting hydrangeas, for example, by placing stems in boiling water for 15 minutes.) Don’t be surprised if you leave wondering where the past few hours went; it’s all part of the magic. le jardinfrancais.com Q

THE FIRST GRAYS

ROOT REBOOT In addition to masking grays, root concealers help a thinning hairline look a bit thicker.

Do you feel like it’s too soon to rock gray hair? No need to panic, pluck, or dye every hair on your head. Beauty director Erica Metzger explores low-key camouflage tricks.

1

A pro can make your grays look like subtle highlights. At Fourteenjay salon in New York City, colorist David Adams lightened my natural brunette color with toffee and caramel tones and darkened the grays around my face with honey lowlights. The effect was natural, and the upkeep easy. Three months went by before I noticed my roots.

3

CONCEAL IT

Root concealers buy you time, whether you’re a root-touch-up regular between dye jobs or not ready to commit to long-term color. The color goes on like makeup and lasts until you wash it out. My faves (right): tinted powder and spray for the patchy spot at my temple. On ponytail days, a waxy crayon controls the crazy strays.

[COLORLE SS

SPOT-DYE DIY

Permanent color provides full gray coverage but takes more commitment (think touch-ups every four to six weeks). “Don’t be afraid to dye the grays and leave the rest of your hair alone. Just match your natural color or go one shade lighter,” says James Corbett, Clairol color director. A tint brush is key for isolating small sections, so pick one up if it’s not included in the box. One quick yank took care of the white antenna sprouting from the top of my head. My first gray, gone! No surprise, the wiry strand grew back, along with a patch of silvery frizz above my left temple. It was time to wise up and ask the pros for easy options to hide the noticeable streaks and tame the wonky texture.

HOME OUTDOOR LIVING

it’s PORCH season

The time for winter hibernating has passed. Turn your porch into a space that will tempt you to stay outdoors until the first snowflakes start falling again.

chic &

TRADITIONAL Do you dream of shingle-clad bungalows and garden parties? Try on a new-traditional look. Start with wicker or rattan furniture and bold prints.

1

MA J O R PI EC E S Approach the layout as you would an indoor living room with comfortable seating in traditional shapes. Try a wicker settee that mimics the silhouette of a scroll-arm sofa, left, and deep armchairs.

2

HIGH D E F I N ITIO N Anchor the seating arrangement with an outdoor rug. Black-and-white is a perennially sophisticated choice, and a graphic print helps camouage dirt. Choose the pattern to kick the formality up (geometric fretwork) or down (thick stripes).

3

PU N C HY CO LO R Accessories in saturated oranges and hot pinks energize the neutral backdrop. Contrast geometrics with at least one botanical or abstract print for personality.

PLAYFUL ELEMENTS Don’t let these spaces get too serious; they should be casual and fun. Hang a swinging chair, right, or include a piece in a funky shape. Pile on accessories in eclectic patterns.

MODERN If you crave a serene and well-ordered getaway, this is your fit: clean lines and a reserved palette, with a comfortable side.

1

LOW PROFILES Look for midcentury modern-inspired furniture with simple lines and no fussy ornamentation. A low-to-the-ground sectional with a deep frame, below, is ideal for lounging.

2

NEUTR AL GROUND Set the foundation with an understated palette where no one element demands too much attention. Bleached or gray-washed woods and solid neutrals are the base.

3

SCULPTURAL ITEMS Contrast boxy furniture with a few curvy pieces to keep things from going too stark. A low-slung scoop chair with a wire frame, below, softens the scene but still reads modern.

4

MUTED ACCENTS Don’t overdo the accessories; this look is decidedly uncluttered. Choose pillows in a narrow range of toned-down colors and keep patterns calm (color-blocked stripes, for example).

To clean wood, mix a mild oil-base soap with warm water. Visit BHG.com/ PorchFurniture for more tips.

Wood or PVC Decking? You can get a modern-looking gray deck by installing either pressuretreated wood that will age to gray, above, or PVC decking that looks amazingly similar, left. So which is better? It depends. The initial investment for wood is low (about $1 per linear foot), but it fades irregularly based on furniture placement and sun exposure, plus needs regular maintenance such as resealing. PVC (such as Azek) runs about $3–$5 per linear foot but fades much slower and needs only a quick hosing to keep it looking new.

With panic rising, I dropped by the BH&G garden department (I know, it’s like cheating) and left with a well-loved copy of “the only book on perennial gardens you’ll ever need,” The Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch. The author promised to teach me to “think like a plant” and that everything was going to be O-K! And it was. Mostly. My fi rst year didn’t go perfectly, but I got to know my plants, and I’m pretty sure I can fix most everything I ruined— even the drip irrigation lines I pruned back in an overzealous frenzy of deadheading. If you fi nd yourself in a similar situation and can’t beg the editor of Better Homes & Gardens for plant IDs in Latin (thanks, Stephen!), don’t despair. I may not be a pro, but I know where to fi nd them. This is what I learned.

t’s possible that I’m in over my head. Strike that. It’s certain. My husband, Jeff , and I bought our fi rst house last year. We knew from real estate pictures that the Des Moines home we fell for had large, well-established perennial gardens. In the dead of winter, that seemed fi ne. Once summer arrived, Jeff would handle the lawn, and I’d maintain—no, enhance!—the gardens. The Iowa snows eventually receded, and I enthusiastically set to hacking back some of what I was pretty sure was last year’s debris. Indeterminate plants (weeds?) started popping up, and as we nosed around, neighbors took notice. Anyone who walked by stopped to tell us how much they loved our garden: “It’s a bright spot in the neighborhood!” Or worse, “You must

NOW WHAT?

If only everything was as reliable as Rayovac.

Don’t stress about achieving Master Gardener status overnight. Here’s the game plan as your first growing season gets under way:

1

RESEARCH

Q Keep a journal of plant notes. (If you’re feeling fancy, might I recommend the Observer’s Notebook: Trees?) And/or start a Pinterest board to store information and brainstorms.

Record the average and historical first and last frost dates for your ZIP code (find them at garden.org) so you know what your growing season is. Q

Q Start taking pictures of your garden right away, says Sandra Gerdes, Better Homes & Gardens Test Garden® manager. You’ll want to record the specifics of each season so you can remember what happens when and where.

Before you get your hands dirty, call your local utilities for a free check for buried pipes and wires. Don’t assume previous owners have done it and steered plants clear of trouble spots. Luckily, the clay pipe I smashed was no longer in use. Q

2

START FRESH

Q When spring feels close, start clearing beds of weeds, leaves, old annuals, last year’s growth of native grasses, spent hostas, and other dead foliage. This is infinitely easier to do if new growth hasn’t started yet.

Things never quite how you left them? We’ve got you. RAYOVAC batteries are hard working and long lasting, promising to be the one thing that’s a sure thing. ®

Q Dorian Winslow, president of the tool-supply company Womanswork, helpfully observed that if you’re not sure which are dead annuals and which are dormant perennials, do nothing until things start greening up. Dead plants that don’t show any signs of life were annuals. (You will begin to notice a theme: Wait and see.)

With your slate as clean as it’s going to get, lightly rake your soil to loosen it, and rake in some compost. Q Keep your eyes peeled for early bulbs poking through so you don’t bury them or cause rake-related damage. Q

Q Mulch! Dave Whitinger, executive director of the National Gardening Association, taught me that mulching is the No. 1 thing you can do to ensure success. “Never let your bare soil be exposed to the air and sun.” I like this tip because it mainly involves picking between colors of wood chips.

3

PRACTICE PATIENCE

Q My other favorite pearl of wisdom is from Chip Tynan, manager of the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Horticultural Answer Service: “Hands off! Leave the plants alone. Biding your time and living with your garden for a full growing season may allow you to avoid work and regrets later.”

Sandra echoed this point, suggesting that while you’re waiting you need to be diligent about watching. Keep taking pictures throughout the year (and at different times of day). Draw maps and the plants themselves. Keep all of this info in your journal from Step 1 so next year you’ll know what to expect and can improve your plant care. Take this advice and your hydrangeas may actually have flowers, unlike my poor over-pruned leaf-only plants.

Q

So get going. If you do nothing else, mulch and watch. And remember, look twice, lop once.

START COMPOSTING. NEVER LET A SCRAP OF ORGANIC MATTER LEAVE YOUR PROPERTY. CHIP TYNAN 50

hese aren’t your grandma’s florals. Wallpaper is back, and botanicals are bigger, bolder, and more dramatic than ever. Vivid, unexpected color combinations take the lead in influencing a space’s palette; larger-than-life motifs burst with personality. Though lush and a little wild, the patterns’ structured repeats instill a sense of order in a room. Start small in a less-used space like a powder room or back hallway, or jump in with a floor-to-ceiling living room accent wall. It’s time to give big floral a shot. We think it’ll grow on you.

[THE

MOROCCO ON THE PATIO A master of dresseddown elegance, L.A.-based designer Nathan Turner shares his entertaining formula: E M B R AC E A TH E M E

“Themes give a starting point to build a menu, flowers, and decor around.” A visit to a local Israeli market in L.A. inspired this gathering’s sparkling pomegranate cocktail, left, and a cheese board with a Middle Eastern spin (page 60).

”Use what you have. I’ve repurposed baking dishes as serving bowls and juice glasses as vases.”

MIX IT UP

LAY THE SPREAD

Following the Middle Eastern theme, the appetizer board, below, hints at mezze platters with oil-cured olives, dried fruits like peaches and figs, and roasted leek or beet hummus. Like tapas in Spain, mezzes are small dishes or snacks served with predinner drinks throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean.

Centerpieces don’t always have to be flowers. Nathan filled mismatched compote dishes with fruit and the occasional flower, right. A strategic hit of gold from a footed bowl dresses things up a little. “It’s like adding jewelry,” he says. To keep the look from getting too one-note or stuffy, Nathan added the unexpected black candles. “They’re a little funky and add drama.”

BUILD A BOARD Style a snack board like Nathan’s in four steps. WO R K B I G TO S MALL

Start with the cheeses. They’re the largest items and need room for slicing and scooping. Arrange them evenly around the board. AD D STRU CTU R E

Little bowls and cups anchor the arrangement and help contain loose items. Fill them with nuts, olives, and dips or spreads. PI LE IT O N

Now that your board has structure, fill any gaps with things that can be piled or tumbled. Choose for taste but also for color and texture. “The key here is getting a really good variety,” Nathan says. F I N I S H IT O F F

For the final touch, tuck in a few herb sprigs, such as mint or rosemary.

It was practically a given that blue would play a major role in the kitchen in Kathryn and Matt Purselle’s Atlanta-area home. “We wanted a complicated blue—a little green, a little gray,” Kathryn says. The designers at Terracotta Design Build nailed it with Tempe Star SW 6229 by Sherwin-Williams when they replaced the mishmash of old cabinets. New appliances, countertops, and backsplash tile with an industrial edge complete the facelift. One thing barely changed: the layout. “We moved a lot of things a few inches,” Kathryn says, “and it’s all so much better.”

HOME PLANTINGS

For his mom’s birthday, cupcakes.

EPIMEDIUM FLOWERS RESEMBLE TINY ORCHIDS, AND THE LEAVES EMERGE MOTTLED, HEMMED, AND SPLASHED WITH COLOR.

E UE Q X SH IM G

Over time, both rhizome and clumping forms function as a groundcover.

EPIMEDIUM × ‘SUNSHOWERS’

Dainty fl owers. Wirethin stems. You might think epimediums need a lot of coddling. But these natives from China, Japan, and the Mediterranean tolerate some of the most punishing conditions and spread to choke out weedy competition. Q PUSHING THE LIMITS The woodland warriors handle many challenges: rocky soil, dry areas, hillsides to control erosion, dappled sun where lawn won’t grow. Once established, they tolerate dry, shady areas where other plants suffer, like under shallow-rooted trees. But to get the most robust plants, give them rich, well-drained soil in full shade.

E. GRANDIFLORUM ‘CIRCE’

Wherever you place them, avoid soggy, heavy soil. Q COLD COMFORT

Most species of this perennial thrive in Zones 5–7, but Japanese species sneak by in Zone 4 and Chinese species tolerate Zone 8. Sudden cold snaps can harm blossoms, so in cold pockets, plant them under an evergreen to protect from late frosts. On the fl ip side, heat, full sun, and drying winds can scorch epimediums in the South.

Q GOOD GROOMING

Because the leaves turn bronze in autumn, prune the foliage in very early spring (so you can enjoy the foliage all winter in milder climates) or late winter (so you don’t accidentally cut off the early-spring fl owers). Q

F

rom late April into May, Jeroen and Keriann Koeman watch this transformation on repeat: Visitors arrive at Wicked Tulips Flower Farm looking stressed but leave the U-pick field smiling. A few have been known to weep with delight at the sight of so much color after a long New England winter. Jeroen, who grew up with tourists visiting his family’s tulip farm in Holland, wanted to re-create that experience. “As a society, we’re distancing ourselves more and more from nature,” Jeroen says. “We love connecting people with the beauty that nature has to offer.” What really sets these young entrepreneurs apart is their dedication to organic growing. Wicked Tulips is the only certified-organic tulip bulb grower in the United States, and they sell only organically grown U.S. and Dutch bulbs.

CAULIFLOWER

84

| April 2018

Cauliflower’s star power is far from dimming. Maybe that’s because it has become the darling in low-carb and gluten-free recipes (not to mention its chameleon-like ability to morph into rice, pizza crust, and more). The colorful varieties are more readily available than ever, and each has its own nutritional benefits. While all shades are ample sources of vitamin C, orange has a high amount of beta-carotene, purple is rich in antioxidants, and green has an extra dose of vitamin A.

CAULIFLOWER TABBOULEH

Rice cauliflower by finely chopping with a chef’s knife. A food processor works, but be careful you don’t overprocess and end up with mush.

In a 12-inch skillet heat 3 Tbsp. olive oil over medium-high heat. Add one head finely chopped cauliflower (or two 10-oz. pkg. riced cauliflower) and 1 tsp. salt. Cook 5 minutes or until crisp-tender, stirring occasionally; let cool. In a large bowl stir together 1 Tbsp. lemon zest, 1⁄4 cup lemon juice, 1⁄2 tsp. sugar, and 1 ⁄2 tsp. salt. Add cauliflower, 1 ⁄2 cup sliced green onions, 1⁄2 cup snipped fresh mint, 1⁄2 cup snipped fresh parsley, 1 cup cherry tomatoes, and 1 cup chopped cucumber. Let stand 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1⁄2 cup sunflower kernels before serving.

bookmarked for Passover

A new generation of young cooks is reviving and refreshing traditional Jewish cuisine and sharing modern takes on the Passover holiday. Add their cookbooks to your collection for inspired dishes all year long.

FOR THE BAKER Calling all bakers: You’re going to want to flag every delicious variation of challah, babka, rugelach, and bagel in Shannon Sarna’s step-by-step guide. For Passover, the Jewish food blogger behind The Nosher suggests modernizing matzo by making your own. “Incorporate spices or herbs to transform this typically bland ingredient into something memorable,” she says. Try Shannon’s cinnamon-sugar version spread with cream cheese and jam for breakfast, or go fancy and serve her truffle variation of matzo alongside a selection of fruits and spreads on a cheese board. MODERN JEWISH BAKER by Shannon Sarna, $30

FOR CLASSICS REIMAGINED Jeffrey Yoskowitz and Liz Alpern turn a modern lens on time-honored traditions. Even if you don’t know anything about Eastern European Jewish cooking, the stories in the book educate and inspire. These owners of Gefilteria, a New York City-based company selling artisanal gefilte fi sh, love to rethink classic dishes at Passover. Try their Cauliflower and Mushroom Kugel, a soufflélike version of the baked pudding typically made with potatoes or noodles. (Matzo meal replaces bread crumbs for Passover.) Whether your room is lofty or modest, a white ceiling is soothing when the tone is consistent with the rest of the space. Londonbased Dyer Grimes architects used white with blue undertones to unite this bedroom’s cool palette.

IN THE MOOD FOR COLOR

When you walk into your home, do you want to feel calm? Uplifted? Confident? Color—more than any other factor—establishes the mood of a room. Expert advice helps you use color to give every space in your home that just-right feel.

If tranquillity is your priority, whitewashed colors will help you find your Zen. Make it whisper-quiet, but never dull, using soft, chalky hues that are close in value so none vie for attention. Color consultant Kate Smith says the best rooms for decompressing are the ones that peacefully blend tints, tones, and shades of a few desaturated colors. Incorporate a range of textures so it’s even more comforting. “You need the softness of drapes, rugs, and throws to add warmth,” says interior designer Tom Delavan.

SERENE Texture keeps a cool room from feeling cold. Silky fabrics mixed with nubbly ones enrich Tom Delavan’s neutral living room.

CALMING HUES Cool colors softened with gray undertones are the most restful.

For an upbeat room that enlivens your senses — and neutral furniture—look to complementary colors, which contribute a natural energy when paired. Choose pure hues that haven’t been shaded with black for extra zing. “They are the brightest and cheeriest and project joy,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. They may not all seem to go together, but if you repeat the colors around the room it gives them continuity and they start to harmonize.

For intensity, interior designer Miles Redd champions bold juxtapositions: dark with light, matte with shiny, old with new. “Tension of disparate elements makes a room feel exciting,” he says. Here bright yellow art shakes up green-and-blue decor.

GLAM + DRAMATIC

As riveting as a red-carpet gown, rich colors in touchable fabrics create an enveloping experience. For maximum saturation, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, suggests sticking to two or three gemstone hues, such as emerald and sapphire. Then break it up with a light neutral to make the colors pop. Layer on accents that shimmer and shine—like jewelry for the room. “ You want it to have a little flamboyance and sparkle,” she says. Deep blue walls and drapes have a sultry cocooning effect in this room by designer Jeremiah Brent.

SPECTACULAR SPIRES IN INTENSE HUES, DELPHINIUMS DESERVE THEIR DRAMA QUEEN STATUS. LET THEM MAKE A SCENE IN YOUR GARDEN.

Delphiniums are famous for the range and intensity of blues—sky blue to indigo. From left: Blackmore & Langdon’s ‘Faust’, ‘Blue Lace’, ‘Centurion Rose Shades’, ‘Dwarf Stars’, and Blackmore & Langdon’s ‘Blue Nile’.

elphiniums, like most superstars, require extra attention. The towering perennials need stakes for support and have a reputation for being finicky when grown in less than ideal conditions (read: most U.S. gardens). But White Flower Farm nursery in Morris, CT, is making growing the lofty spires (up to 7 feet tall) of brilliant flowers less daunting. The nursery propagates lessdemanding varieties, including strains from the acclaimed Blackmore & Langdon nursery in England. “B&L delphiniums are more vigorous, sturdier, and stronger than most varieties,” says Cheryl Whalen (above), White Flower Farm’s head gardener. For plants that don’t need support, Whalen suggests dwarf 30-inch-tall varieties. (What other perennial is a dwarf at 30 inches?) For an extended color range beyond the blues, delphiniums now have white, pink, and red covered.

112

| April 2018

Hardy in Zones 3–7, delphiniums prefer moist, cool summers and do not fare well in hot, dry weather or windy conditions. Plant in full sun where they have plenty of breathing room. (In warmer climates, get a similar look with delphiniums’ kissing cousins, larkspurs.)

2 RICH SOIL

Fertile soil with good drainage is a must. Prep the site the season before planting by adding plenty of compost, Cheryl Whalen says. “After planting, topdress with mulch to keep the moisture in and water regularly.”

3 THINNING

In the spring, delphiniums send up spikes with several shoots. Thin to one or two shoots per stalk the first year to help spikes establish, three or four the second year, and five to eight in year three when the short-lived perennial peaks.

Heavy winds or thunderstorms can topple the weighty, blossom-packed tops. Support the thin, hollow stems using single-stem supports (available at garden centers) or bamboo stakes and twine.

5 C O M P L E M E N TA R Y PA R T N E R S

To balance their height and help shelter delphiniums from wind gusts, surround them with shrubs, such as hydrangeas, boxwoods, and spireas. Get seasonlong beauty by planting summerblooming delphiniums with spring favorites like peonies and irises and late-summer ornamental grasses, catmints, foxgloves, and verbascums.

6 OTHER LOFTY SPIRES

If you can’t grow these head-turners in your region, consider spireforming stand-ins, such as foxgloves, penstemons, or lupines. Find delphiniums at whiteflowerfarm.com.

top row The double blossoms of 5-foot-tall Delphinium ‘Blue Lace’ rise above castoroil plant’s sprawling dark red foliage. Delphinium’s star power continues in arrangements.

middle row White Flower Farm marketing director Eliot A. Wadsworth carries freshcut delphiniums. Blackmore & Langdon’s ‘Blue Nile’ has brilliant midblue florets with a contrasting white eye, or “bee.” The 5¹⁄2-foot-tall spikes start to bloom as spring alliums fade.

bottom row Nectar-rich florets attract butterflies like this tiger swallowtail. Magic Fountains strains come in a range of colors (lilac, pink, sky blue, dark blue, pure white, and white with a black bee) and stay under 3 feet so they don’t need staking. Q

CONTINUITY Trellis motifs like this real wood lattice are repeated throughout the house.

To transform the entryway from a pass-through to a comfy niche, interior designer Amanda Reynal built in a window seat, framed a vintage Pucci scarf, and pulled up a couple of garden stools that bring the outside in. No longer a drop zone, “It might be my favorite spot in the house, says homeowner Whitney Hanley.

ith papers signed, keys in hand, and a bunch of plain rooms in need of an update, California transplant Whitney Hanley (above right) also had the perfect person on speed dial: her childhood friend, interior designer Amanda Reynal (above let). “Whit and I have always shared a slightly whimsical sensibility: Neither of us shies away from color, and we like to keep the mood light and fresh,” Amanda says. Whitney agrees: “We just get each other, so I knew Amanda would know what works for me and my family.” What works is a lively but casual glamour that’s part classic Palm Beach, part chic garden party. It’s an aesthetic the two shared even as they learned to ride horses, obsessed over Lilly Pulitzer dresses, and daydreamed about life after middle school in Long Island, circa 1985. After high school years spent apart, Whitney and Amanda’s paths crossed again in college. Friendship refreshed, they became roommates, and—no surprise—Amanda took on the dorm decor. “Think preppy meets posh,” she says. Some things never change. Working through calls, texts, Skype, and FedEx, Amanda, who’s based in Des Moines, helped Whitney bring the Nantucket beach house of their childhood dreams to life with updated colors and patterns fit for the California bungalow. It’s proof that you like what you like, and you can’t make new old friends.

The fresh colors and lively spirit of a large abstract painting by Des Moines artist Robert Spellman served as the jumping-off point for the whole house.

YOUR GUIDE TO STARTING

If you’ve been too intimidated to try it, now’s the time: Yoga has never been more accessible. Here’s what you need to know before hitting the mat. Yoga not only boosts strength and flexibility but also is a boon to your health and well-being. “Over 90 percent of studies, covering over 50 styles of yoga, found that yoga has so many positive results,” says Marlynn Wei, M.D., coauthor of The Harvard Medical School Guide to Yoga. Consider these two: In one survey more than 40 percent of people said that yoga motivated them to eat healthier, and 60 percent said it encouraged them to exercise more. “As long as you show up on your mat, you can benefit from yoga,” says Sarah Herrington, author of Essential Yoga.

Made from the whole amaranth grain, this high-fiber flour is a complete protein, meaning it has all the essential amino acids. You can enhance the nutrition in recipes calling for all-purpose flour by subbing in 25 percent amaranth flour.

Don’t let the name fool you: It’s not a mix of all-purpose and whole wheat. It’s 100 percent whole wheat flour milled from white wheat berries. So it has the same nutritional benefits as whole wheat flour but is sweeter, lighter, higher in fiber than all-purpose, and works well in baked goods.

BETTER PETS

A checkup can be a tense time for your dog or cat—and you. These strategies make the vet visit more bearable for everyone.

Q

KEEP THE CARRIER NEUTRAL

Set it out at least a week before the visit so your pet doesn’t associate the carrier only with the vet. Make it comfy: Line it with a fleece blanket, which research shows calms pets more than a towel, says Marty Becker, D.V.M., coauthor of From Fearful to Fear Free. Q

TAKE JOYRIDES Let your pet tag

along to the pet store or on errands to break the association between the car and the vet. For cats, you can put them in the car for trips to the drive-through. Start small by fi rst just backing out of the driveway then giving your pet a treat. Q

MAKE THE RIDE COMFORTABLE

Cover the carrier with a towel or sheet so only the front is unobstructed. “Pets aren’t used to traveling at that speed and seeing the world whiz by,” Becker says. Also precool or preheat the car.

AT THE VET Q WAIT IN THE CAR Waiting rooms can bring out the worst in pets because they smell the fear hormones from every animal who has been there; lots of people and noise worsens things. So ask if you can get a text or call when the vet is ready. Not feasible? Keep the carrier covered and, if it fits, on your lap or a chair. Q

ASK ABOUT CHANGING THE EXAM

These techniques can ease stress. Ask if your dog can be examined on a slip-proof mat: on the table if the pet is small, on the floor if the pet is larger. Keeping your cat in the carrier with the top off and the cat covered by a towel helps, says Jill Sackman, D.V.M., Ph.D., head of behavior medicine services at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in locations across Michigan.

TOOLS TO RELAX

1

PH EROMONE S

You can buy products mimicking these hormones that cats and dogs (and humans) give off, which can be calming for pets. Use a wipe or spray on blankets in carriers and/or run a diffuser with pheromones before you leave the house.

2 MUSIC

Quiet classical and reggae have been proven to relax pets, Becker says. Play the CD A Sound Beginning or one by ICalmPet; a book on tape, which has a calming rhythm, works, too. Q
