I was a weird kid. I didn’t realize that at the time, but looking back, I can imagine my parents scratching their heads from time to time about my childhood hobbies, which around the age of 7 included a keen interest in Greek mythology and flowers. But don’t worry! Though it may sound unlikely, I did have friends. My two hobbies came together in my love of one humble but glorious plant in a neighbor’s yard: bearded iris. Ancient Greeks personified the rainbow as a goddess named Iris—the daughter of a sea god and a cloud nymph—who ran messages up and down the rainbow between Olympus and Earth. My earthbound obsession was across the street from our house in West Texas. The retired couple who lived there had an almost lawnless front yard filled with hundreds of iris. During their weeks-long blooming season, I spent hours going from flower to flower like a towheaded bee in Sears Toughskins comparing all the scents. “Honey, that strange Orr boy is out in the front yard again,” I can imagine Mrs. Ramsey saying to her husband from the kitchen window. My memory of those flowers is wrapped up in both the color and the fragrance. Like their rainbow namesake, iris come in one of horticulture’s largest color ranges: The only missing shade is a true scarlet (see page 106). I was preoccupied with matching the colors and fragrances in a kind of synesthetic way. I had noticed that the orange ones smelled like orange. The yellow like lemon custard, brown like root beer, and white like coconut. (OK, I’ll admit that was a stretch.) My childhood imagination matched hue and scent as I tried to catalog all the color options. Those iris remind me that color schemes tap into a visceral response for many homeowners as well. Each of us probably has different ideas of what makes a room feel formal, happy, serious, shocking, or surprising. In our annual color issue we hope our readers will allow themselves the chance to play and experiment, like a child might, unencumbered by concerns of what everyone will think and instead focused on what makes you and your loved ones happy. This spring, as the iris bloom in your STEPHEN ORR, neighborhood, take a moment to lean over for Editor in Chief a sniff. I swear the purple iris smell like instagram @steporr twitter @orrsteporr grape bubble gum. Let me know if you agree.

Their caps, however, may not be. “Cosmetic packaging with mixed materials like metal and plastic are notoriously difficult to recycle,” says Ashlee Piper, an ecolifestyle expert. Happily, stores like Origins and Credo will recycle caps, empty tubes, and compacts—no purchase necessary. Some brands (like Burt’s Bees, L’Occitane, and Eos) have free recycling programs through TerraCycle, a company that creates new products from old packaging.

More than half of Americans admit they throw away beauty products. Keep yours out of the landfill with these simple changes.

GIVE AWAY OLD PRODUCTS Contact a local shelter to see if it will accept unopened or gently used products. Or send them to Project Beauty Share, which will distribute lightly used products (depending on the kind) to marginalized women. Piper recommends disinfecting anything that has been in contact with your skin with a mist or two of rubbing alcohol. (Put it in a spray bottle for mess-free cleaning.)

RECONSIDER THE PACKAGING

Avoid hardto-recycle materials by looking for items with minimal packaging, such as bar soaps that often come wrapped in recyclable paper. Lush sells solid bars of skin-care staples like cleansers, toners, facial oils, and serums. If you’re stuck with nonrecyclable packaging, repurpose it. A small plastic tub that held eye cream, for instance, could hold jewelry, other tiny items, or even beauty products when you travel. “I clean small containers and fill them with my face cream when I’m traveling instead of going out and buying travel-size containers,” Piper says.

DYED EGGS Inspired by the warp and weft of a basket weave, this checkered motif gives traditional dyed eggs a modern two-tone effect. To create the pattern, apply vertical and horizontal lines of ¹/8" graphic art tape to hard-boiled eggs. Soak about five minutes each in a mixture of ½ cup hot water, 1 tsp. vinegar, and 20 drops food coloring. Let dry, then remove tape. Repeat dyeing in a lighter version of the same color made using 10 drops of food coloring; soak three to four minutes. Let dry.

PAPER BASKETS

These baskets make charming party favors.

2 Cut a 4"×4" square of matching paper and place on woven center to strengthen the base. Fold strips over the center square and crease at the edge, Image 2, so they stand upright. 3 Glue together two of the remaining seven strips end to end; trim to 17".

Repeat with four more. (You’ll have three 1"×17" strips total.) Starting at the base, weave one 17" strip through the upright strips, Image 3. Hot-glue where ends overlap; trim excess. Repeat with remaining 17" strips, working up the basket in alternating patterns. Fold excess from vertical strips over top 17" strip; hot-glue to the inside. Hot-glue last 1"×12" strip to the inside as a handle.

Stir in a little cocoa to color and flavor a portion of the brown butter frosting, then pipe short vertical lines over long horizontal ones to create the basket (how-to, page 130). Tuck egg-shape sugar cookies into the top of the basket and use toasted coconut flakes for the “grass.”

STAMPED NAPKINS Create crosshatchpatterned napkins with a clever DIY stamp. Make the stamp by wrapping rubber bands horizontally around a 3"×4" wood block. Mask off the outside edge of the napkin with painters tape. Dab fabric paint onto rubber bands; press onto a napkin corner. Reapply paint, rotate stamp 90 degrees, and press onto first marks. Repeat to fill border.

PLACE MATS Brighten a rectangle of cane webbing (the kind used on chair seats and backs) by weaving a stripe of yarn along one edge. Fray the edges of a 13"×18" piece of Fine Box Cane (caneand basket.com). Then use an embroidery needle to weave four columns of yarn an inch from the edge.

EGG CUPS Your hand-dyed eggs deserve pretty perches. These egg holders are made from cane webbing. For each one, cut a 3"×5½" strip of Fine Fine Open ⁷/16" Mesh Cane (caneand basket.com). Fray one long edge, roll into a cylinder, and secure overlapped edges with hot glue. ■

A uniform shade of white paint connects the rooms in Danielle Sigwalt’s home. She finds plenty of other opportunities to layer in color and personality, like the framed wallpaper panels bracketing the dining room and the pale pink ceiling crowning the intimate space.

anielle Sigwalt comes by her eclecticism honestly. Growing up, her parents were in the foreign service. So without consciously realizing it, Danielle was collecting design inspiration from the various places they lived around the world. “I find global-boho style intrinsically appealing as long as it’s tempered with a touch of glamour,” she says. “I definitely fall more into the high-heeled, rather than the Birkenstock, side of boho decor.” For the Arlington, VA, home she shares with her kids and husband Sebastien, Danielle combined pieces collected during her travels with modern finishes, bright colors, and a mix of thrifted and department store finds. She bridges aesthetic elements by pairing the unexpected. In the kitchen, for instance, flashes of brass shine against Moroccaninspired clay tiles. In the master bedroom, an antique wood screen hangs above a tufted velvet sofa. And in the dining room, mottled bamboo chairs circle a lacquered Parsons table. “When everything is matchymatchy, design becomes stagnant,” Danielle says. And her house is anything but.

ENTRYWAY The foyer’s contrasts start with the dark stained woods set against brilliant white walls. Smaller stylistic mash-ups take over from there. For instance, a Federal-style bench (found on a street curb) wears a playful painterly cushion and velvet pillows.

I find the first claustrophobic, and shelving can gather dust.� LIVING ROOM Layers of textiles visually separate the seating area from the utilitarian kitchen. A worn vintage rug tops a larger grass-cloth one, and graphic Kuba cloth pillows and faux sheepskin cover ikatupholstered chairs.

MASTER BEDROOM The rustic wood bed frame, right, has a low headboard, so Danielle piled up velvet pillows and hung a framed panel of 1960s fabric for height. A pair of silver sconces from World Market were the right shape but wrong fi nish, so Danielle spray-painted them golden to pull the brass tones from the rest of the house into the bedroom. Next to the orange velvet sofa, below, is a chest of drawers she found on Craigslist and spiffed up with white paint and hardware polish.

COLOR CUES Danielle’s preference for pink (“not bubblegum, but sophisticated with a hint of gray”) inspired two modern spins on the color: as a soft base like in the dining room ceiling and as one of several vibrant accents in a neutral shell like in the master bedroom.

New shampooers are increasingly userfriendly and offer fast dry times, making them a good investment if you have lots of carpeting or it gets high traffic.

Carpets can hold onto indoor air pollutants, so using a pro to deep clean at least every 18–24 months can remove allergens in addition to dirt and stains. Another pro pro: They usually help move furniture.

We’re dedicated to featuring readers’ projects in “I Did It.” But we couldn’t resist sharing this piece made over by BH&G art director Christy Brokens. Built by her husband’s greatgrandfather using wooden shipping crates as drawers, the old cabinet had sentimental family value and storage potential. Christy knew the piece could fill a practical role in the entryway for her family of six. All it needed was a light update—one that made it feel clean and current but didn’t strip away its history. Christy’s makeover started with a bold green paint to cover the old white finish. ”I fell in love with the color and was itching to use it,” she says. She decided the wide drawers could handle large-scale hardware, so she replaced the original glass knobs with metal pulls nearly 8 inches long (Centinel; atlashomewares.com). Melisa Fluhr had every intention of going back to work after her first son, Austin, was born, until she found out he had epilepsy. Craving more flexibility to be home and care for him, Melisa put her career on hold and poured her energy into decorating his nursery. “It was therapeutic and allowed me to tap into my creative side,” she says. Expecting they would spend a lot of time together in his room, she designed a baby- and parent-friendly space. She didn’t know it at the time, but that decision would launch an entirely new career. When the photos she posted online received overwhelming applause, Melisa realized her modern take on kids decor resonated with parents. So she teamed up with friend Pam Ginocchio to launch Project Nursery, a blog and e-commerce site where parents can find and share decorating ideas. “A lot of people think a nursery needs to look babyish, but it can be an extension of your home,” she says. Melisa skipped kid-size furniture in the playroom, instead repurposing her old dining table as the art and homework spot. It’s no big deal if it gets marred. “I leave markers in jars and tins on lazy Susans. I hope it encourages creativity,” she says. When a masterpiece is finished, Melisa hangs the work with clothespins so she can easily swap in new creations. More than a playful accessory, a gingham tepee provides a reading retreat when the playroom gets crowded. “Emmy brings her dolls and books in here,” Melisa says. “Plus, it saves blankets from being turned into forts.” Melisa encourages her kids to take pride in their spaces. Displaying their artwork alongside purchased pieces, like a Busy Bee print from Katie Ink, empowers their creativity. She helps them keep the room clean by not organizing so much that it feels unapproachable. Wide, shallow wire drawers mean everyone can find what they’re looking for without dumping out the contents and can easily see where things belong when it’s time to clean up.

One of the great joys of owning a home is planting a tree. It not only creates a sense of permanence but also is an investment that pays off in added curb appeal, shade, privacy, or fruit. Before you grab the first crabapple that catches your eye, though, check with your local extension service or nursery to zero in on the right tree for your needs, climate, and yard size. Also consider a

Nurseries sell trees three ways. Each calls for a slightly different planting technique.

BALLED AND BURLAPPED These trees come with a fragile root ball still in its growing soil wrapped in burlap. Balled-and-burlapped trees are more diffi cult to plant because they’re heavy and you want to prevent soil from breaking off , which would expose their vulnerable roots to air. The trick to planting them right on the fi rst try: D IG TH E HOLE Measure the root ball. Dig a hole that is as deep as the root ball height and twice as wide. To check depth, lay a stick across the hole, right, and measure the distance to the bottom. n

E N S U RE TH E RIG HT D E P TH Measuring is important but not foolproof. To prevent planting too deeply, set sod clumps in the hole. Pull them out from under the ball to lower it as needed. Once positioned, cut and fold back some of the ball’s burlap, twine, and, if present, wire cage. n

CONTAINERGROWN To plant a tree grown in a nursery container, dig a hole the same depth as the soil in the pot and twice as wide. If the tree is rootbound, poke a knife into any circling, matted roots to separate them. Plant so the root flare (at the base of the trunk) is uncovered with no bark beneath the soil.

BARE ROOT The most affordable option, these dormant trees come with moist packing material around their roots. Just before planting, swish roots in a slurry of soil and water. Dig a hole as deep and wide as the longest roots, mound soil in center, and spread roots down the mound sides. Fill the hole, patting firmly to avoid air pockets and making sure all the trunk is above soil. n

Since patented in 1952 by Harry Hoenselaar of HoneyBaked Ham Co., spiral-sliced hams have steadily grown in popularity because they’re so easy to serve: Simply cut the presliced ham away from the bone.

Half hams are either butt (rump) or shank portions. The butt comes from the upper part of the leg. It’s meatier and more tender than the shank (the lower leg section.) The shank is slightly tougher because it has more connective tissue.

A bone-in whole ham is the entire cured leg, including the thigh bone and part of the pelvic bone. If you’re feeding a big crowd, this is the one to get. They average 20 servings.

BASIC S]

The majority of hams are fully cooked so only need to be reheated to 140°F. Bake your ham, covered, at 325°F for 20 min./lb. for bone-in and 15 min./lb. for boneless.

LABEL LINGO

Hams look similar when wrapped in packages, so you’ve got to read the label to tell the difference. n WET CURED

Most hams are cured to preserve them. Wet-cured hams (also referred to as city hams) are immersed in or injected with a brine containing water, salt, sugar, spices, and curing agents like sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate, and potassium chloride. n NATURAL UNCURED

Hams labeled as such are preserved using celery powder (organically rich in

nitrates) then smoked. Labels specifying “ham with natural juices” have little water added and may take up to 60 minutes longer to bake.

n SMOKED

If labeled smoked, a ham has been smoked over burning wood chips or an atomized spray of liquid smoke. If a label identifies a specific wood type, the ham was smoked over it. If smoke flavor was injected, the label will read ”smoke flavor added.”

In a small bowl stir together ¾ cup red jalapeño pepper jelly and 1½ tsp. five-spice powder.

For fruit, stick with oranges, pears, or apples. Skip fresh pineapple; its enzymes will ruin the texture. O R AN G E - BO U RBO N

Country ham—a common dry-cured ham—is rubbed with salt and seasonings, often smoked, then aged four to six months.

If your go-to glaze is the one that came with your ham, these three combos will nudge you in a new direction. Make sure to spoon the glaze over the ham during the last 45 minutes of baking to prevent burning.

STUFFED SPIRAL

Preheat oven to 325°F. Line a shallow roasting pan with foil. Between the slices of one 8- to 10-lb. spiral-sliced ham insert half of a thinly sliced orange; four garlic cloves, slivered; and sprigs of fresh rosemary and/or thyme all the way around the ham. Transfer ham flat side down to prepared pan. Cover with foil. Bake 2 to 2½ hours or until browned and heated through (140°F). For the last 45 minutes of cooking, uncover and spoon desired glaze (recipes, right) over ham. Transfer to a platter using two large, wide spatulas. Makes 16 servings.

In a small bowl combine ½ cup orange marmalade or peach preserves, ½ cup stone-ground mustard, and 2 Tbsp. bourbon.

We asked three of these next-gen foodies to share their updates on favorite holiday dishes. Their recipes are so delicious that you don’t have to be celebrating Passover to enjoy them.

“A Seder is basically an amazing dinner party with a lot of historical, religious, and cultural signifi cance kind of layered on top,” says the author of Little Book of Jewish Feasts. For Leah, modernizing her family’s traditions— using songs and puppets to tell the story of Passover, for instance— strengthens her connection to the holiday. And Leah’s take on mina, a Sephardic dish commonly served during Passover, reinvents the traditional rustic meat pie as a vegetarian casserole bright with lemon zest and fresh oregano.

On his Seder table and in his Toronto restaurants (Fat Pasha, Rose and Sons, and Schmaltz Appetizing), Anthony serves some family favorites with a few updates. “When we were kids and my parents would go out for the night, my sister used to make super-buttery rice. It was one of the things she knew how to cook,” the chef says. The version Anthony shares in his new cookbook, The Last Schmaltz, appeals to grown-up tastes with schmaltz (rendered chicken fat available at Jewish delis and specialty stores), spring sweet peas, sugar snap peas, pea shoots, and fresh herbs.

When planting bearded iris in a border, opposite, mix with perennial grasses as well as other flowers, such as salvias and asters, that will come into their own after the irises have faded.

earded iris are seen as nostalgic flowers—the kind your grandmother might have grown,” says Kelly Norris, director of horticulture and education at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. (The author of A Guide to Bearded Irises started growing them at 12 and is still obsessed.) “Of course, the risk with being familiar is that bearded iris have often been forgotten in plain sight.” These days, though, as old-fashioned flowers come back into fashion, bearded iris are experiencing a renaissance. Their frilly beauty and color range are big parts of their allure. (They come in a wider array of colors than Japanese, Siberian, and other types of iris.) But it’s their toughness that keeps

gardeners hooked. “Bearded iris are quite drought-tolerant and some varieties prefer almost no watering,” Norris says. Bearded iris have range in the garden too. Tall heirlooms fill out the back of borders; shorter modern hybrids find homes in the front. Planted along pathways, the fragrance of the bearded iris can be an especially powerful memory cue for anyone who grew up with them. “It’s sweet and floral,” Norris says. “Delicate but not shy.”

SPRING PARTY Bearded iris bring both sculptural quality and softness to a mixed arrangement of other spring favorites like peonies and garden roses. Clip some stems higher than others to add architecture to the arrangement.

Melissa Warner Rothblum likes to explore all aspects of a color in her home. “Think of all the ways you can change up a single color through finishes and materials,� she says, pointing to the variations of cream in linen upholstery, paint, and a capiz shell wall hanging.

or designer Melissa Warner Rothblum, working in shades of beige isn’t the safe decorating choice. It’s the adventurous one. “Neutrals can have a lot of punch when you get creative with pattern and scale,” she says. The Los Angeles home Melissa shares with her husband, David, and two young daughters clearly supports her point. There’s the illustrated puffer fish wallpaper on dining room walls and the living room’s coffee table base that appears to whir like energetic atoms. “The look is bold,” she says, “but easy to live with because the colors are quiet.” By restricting her palette, Melissa is able to focus on pattern, texture, shapes, and shimmer. “I’m a fan of mixing pattern, but I have a method,” she says. “My rule of thumb is to always keep the scales of the pattern different. If I choose something big, I don’t let anything else compete with that.” In the family room, for instance, Melissa went large with a black-and-white photo of a palm tree that covers an entire wall. The geometric lines on the rug and petite repeat on the sofa play supporting roles. Melissa says she doesn’t equate neutral with colorless. She considers light pink and navy blue neutrals. The pink acts like blush on cheeks, enlivening a room and adding a warm undertone. Navy has the same versatility as a pair of blue jeans: It can be dressed up or down to go with everything. Melissa’s advice on keeping it spunky? “Do something unexpected,” she says. “I like neutrals when they have personality.”

RHUBARB SMARTS

The stalks are long, but the season is short. From April to June you’ll find an abundance of field-grown rhubarb at farmers markets. These dark rosy stalks tend to have more flavor than hothouse rhubarb, which is what you’ll see most often in grocery stores January through June. Those stalks may be a little lighter in color and have tinges of green or pink speckles, but color doesn’t indicate a significant variation in taste. For the tenderest, sweetest stalks, look for firm young ones—less than 2 inches wide. Peak-season rhubarb does not need to be peeled, but by midsummer, stalks tend to be tough and fibrous. Remove and discard the leaves right away. (They contain oxalic acid, which is toxic.) Store in the fridge in a plastic bag up to 3 days or freeze to enjoy year-round. Cut into 1-inch pieces, place on a baking pan lined with parchment paper, and freeze until firm. Transfer to freezer bags and store up to a year. It’s easy to grow your own, too. Plant the perennial in late fall or early spring where it will get at least a half day of sun and have room to spread to 4 feet wide.

Stir chocolate pieces and coconut extract into half the batter and 1/3 cup of the cocoa powder into remaining half. Alternately spoon mounds of each batter into prepared pan. Using a table knife, swirl batters together. 4. Bake about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove cake from pan; let cool on a wire rack. 5. Prepare Brown Butter Frosting. Set aside 2 cups of the frosting. Stir remaining 3 Tbsp. cocoa into the remaining frosting, adding additional milk (1 to 2 tsp.) as needed to reach spreading consistency. Place cake on a serving platter. Frost entire cake with plain frosting. Place frosting with cocoa into a pastry bag fitted with a basket-weave decorating tip. Pipe a basket pattern on lower half of cake according to directions, opposite. Pipe on a basket handle. Sprinkle coconut at top of basket and around cake on platter. TOPPING 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a small baking sheet with foil and coat liberally with cooking spray. 2. In a small bowl stir together ½ cup cheese, walnuts and croutons. What makes dark chocolate healthy is its high cocoa (or cacao) content. Cocoa has flavonoids, which are antioxidants that can help decrease inflammation and improve heart health. Dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa has the strongest benefits. But if you prefer a bar of milk chocolate, know that it contains 10 to 25 percent cocoa, so you get flavonoids from it too—just not as many as with dark, says Kristi King, M.P.H., R.D.N., a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

One study found 54 percent of acne patients had impaired microbiomes compared to those of the average person. Also, there’s a wave of skin products with a strain of probiotics extracts and prebiotics that can topically help ease skin conditions like eczema and acne, Zeichner says.

“A number of studies have shown there is a difference in the microbiome of people who are obese compared to those who are lean,” Mazmanian says. One reason: The bacteria in your digestive system help break down fat, extract calories from food, and affect the production of the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin. Combine ¾ cup plain unsweetened kefir, ½ cup unsweetened oat milk, a third of a sliced banana, ¾ cup frozen pineapple chunks, ¼ tsp. ground ginger, and 1 cup baby spinach in a blender. Blend on high until smooth. Serve with a slice of toasted whole wheat bread with 1 Tbsp. peanut butter and 1 tsp. raw honey. Makes 1 serving.

CHOCOLATEALMOND ENERGY BITES Stir together ¹∕3 cup salted almond butter and 1 tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder until smooth. Stir in ½ cup diced dates and ½ cup rolled oats. Form into four balls. Makes 4 servings.

Sprinkle a 5-oz. salmon fillet with a pinch each of salt and garlic powder; bake at 400°F about 12 minutes or until fish flakes easily. Spread with ½ tsp. white miso; let stand until melted. Meanwhile sauté 1½ cups green beans in 2 tsp. olive oil and 1 tsp. minced garlic. Serve fish and beans with ¾ cup cooked farro seasoned to taste. Makes 1 serving.
