EDITOR’S LETTER More than 54 percent of American households report eating dinner at home six to seven nights a week; another 30 percent report eating at home five days a week. BH&G FOOD FACTOR 2018 What’s for dinner? It’s the perennial question we get asked (or ask ourselves) every day. In our latest BH&G Food Factor study, the answer was, “Whatever my family will eat.” Accordingly, many of you have developed a rotating cast of guaranteed hits: baked or grilled chicken (more than double any other food item in our study), spaghetti, tacos, meat loaf, burgers, pizza. There aren’t really any surprises on the list. And I agree: Don’t mess with success, right? Then again, don’t we sometimes get a little bored? (If so, see our “Dinner in America” story, page 82.) My mom’s favorite dishes included chicken and dumplings, beef stew, steak fingers (ask a Texan), and pot roast. During the summer, Saturdays were always special because my parents invited guests over for a barbecue and homemade ice cream, but weeknights we mostly ate from a roster of tried-and-trues. Mom read magazines like this one, I think, partly as an escape from the demands of running a household of six but also for new recipe ideas. Unfortunately, not all of them were crowd-pleasers. One specific meal stands out in my memory. My mom had clipped a recipe for creamed salmon on waffles that had caught her eye. My siblings and I made a huge fuss, poking at our food, laughing, and making all sorts of peevish comments. To our shock, my mom burst into tears and left the table. Then, to our horror, my dad glared at each of us before ordering us to apologize. We felt like the worst people in the world. Never again did we insult what came out of that kitchen. For a young me, that was a turning point in how I saw my mother. Like most kids, I didn’t think about my mom’s ego or her creativity much, if at all. In retrospect, I see how she must have struggled with the relentless task of figuring out what to make for dinner. She has been gone for nearly two decades now, and I keep several dozen of her handwritten recipes in an old stationery box. Some are scribbled on piano recital programs, others in the margins of church attendance cards or bank deposit slips. Clearly, she was always striving to find new flavors and dishes to serve us. But by the time I was in high school and my brothers and sister were off at college, Mom was cooking less. I had become interested in cooking and began making dinner for my parents on a semiregular basis. Mom seemed to love the break. You can quickly groom thick brows or create a full, feathery effect with a tinted brow gel. The wand applicator is great for beginners: One or two swipes coat individual hairs, adding both definition and volume. Its tint conceals grays and accentuates pale hairs, too, says Jaimineey Patel, head of training at Blink Brow Bar in London. And because gel formulas provide hold, you can keep any unruly hairs in place.

With a brow pencil, you can draw precise, realisticlooking hairs to shape brows and fill patchy spots. “If you want darker brows, apply more pressure when using a pencil,” says Sania Vucetaj, brow expert and founder of Sania’s Brow Bar in New York City. “To soften the look, brush through with a spoolie brush.” Brow powder also covers bare areas. It sticks to the top of the hair as well as skin, which adds texture to barely-there brows, according to Patel. She suggests lightly drawing an outline of your brows with pencil then filling with brow powder.

For sculpted, dramatic arches you need extra color, volume, and hold. Brow pomade delivers all three. Patel suggests first dabbing the thick, creamy formula on the back of your hand to both warm it (making it easier to smooth on) and control how much you pick up with your brush (too much can look cakey). Apply using soft strokes to keep it from appearing obviously filled in. “Start at your peak—where your arch is—and elongate toward the tail,” Patel says. “Then create soft strokes at the front of the brow and use a spoolie to blend it in.” If you’re in a hurry, a brow crayon delivers a similarly bold effect. For a foodie whose business has turned out millions of Southern-style biscuits, the kitchen is her hot spot—and a place for making wood-fired pizzas with the kids.

I

t’s nearing dinnertime, and Carrie Morey is whizzing around her kitchen. Her husband, John, stokes the fire in the brick fireplace, and their three daughters sit at the island catching up. “We’re not living room people,” Carrie says. Instead, they’re kitchen people; Carrie is known for her line of biscuits— Callie’s Charleston Biscuits—and Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit eateries. So when the couple purchased their 1950s ranch-style home in Mount Pleasant, SC, they zeroed in on the largest room—the living room—as their future kitchen. A renovation

Carrie’s dream kitchen features a large island and a raised fireplace that keeps crackling fires at eye level. “I’ve always wanted a kitchen with a fireplace and initially thought it would be more of a visual and entertaining thing for everyone to gather around,” she says. In fact, it has evolved into a place to cook and has become a part of their dinner routine; they regularly make steak, fish, and pizza there. “It’s the centerpiece of our house,” Carrie says.

Carrie chose marble for all the countertops, including on the 40-inch-tall island (taller than usual to ease food prep). She doesn’t worry about stains. “A red wine stain is a sign of a good time had by all,” she says.

To minimize smoke and cleanup, use a cooking grate that catches grease. The Moreys cook pizzas and steak directly on the grate but use a cast-iron skillet— preheated on the grate—for fish. WOO D

The Morey girls top handmade crusts that were parbaked in the oven (400°F for five minutes) to give them structure. The pizzas, especially if loaded with toppings, sometimes also need to be finished under a broiler because the fireplace heat is only from the bottom.

What are the possible side effects of DUPIXENT? DUPIXENT can cause serious side effects, including: • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), including a severe reaction known as anaphylaxis. To make a space for the whole family to garden, these DIY enthusiasts built a salvaged-parts greenhouse complete with a potting bench, seedling shelves, and lots of natural light.

J

ennifer and Chris Oswald’s one-of-a-kind greenhouse shares some history with the old homes in their Carlisle, PA, neighborhood. Its walls and roof are made up of 22 windows, many of which they bought dirt cheap from someone updating a nearby farmhouse, and the door, purchased at an antiques shop, was salvaged from a local home. The Oswalds built the frame from plywood and 2×4s, letting the windows determine the 6×10-foot size. By screwing the windows to the outside of the framework, they hid the boards so the greenhouse looks like it’s built entirely from windows. The project, which cost about $500 and took 20 hours to complete, gives the family a place to get ahead on starting veggies in early spring and to experiment with plants that need a little extra warmth to thrive.

Jennifer and Chris Oswald have always loved gardening but got the idea to build a greenhouse when their daughter, Aleira, and son, Leo, started growing their own seedlings. Now they can nurture plants on special seed-starting shelves made by drilling 2-inch-diameter holes into two 1×4s.

Jennifer and Chris supplemented antique windows with ones from a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. All had wood frames so they were easy to screw to the structure. Their advice: Check that the wood is rot-free but don’t worry about missing panes. They replaced missing glass with plexiglass

To avoid damaging tree roots, the Oswalds brought in dirt to level the area rather than dig down. After the construction was finished, they created an inexpensive and fast-draining floor

Jennifer and Chris stabilized the corner posts with heavy stones packed with soil. Once the windows were attached, the couple filled large gaps around the door and in the lower walls with 2×4s sealed with caulk.

Plant lungworts toward the front of a bed so you can appreciate their foliage. Lungworts are part of the genus Pulmonaria and cousins of forget-me-nots and brunneras. The name of these perennials refers to the leaves, which were said to resemble unhealthy lungs. (The plants were thought to remedy respiratory diseases.) Modern

The mounding plants typically spread about 2 feet. than darker leaf plants. In the cooler temperatures of the Pacific Northwest, some varieties grow well in full sun. Most lungworts are hardy in Zones 4–9. PESTS AND PROBLEMS ■

Deer and rabbits typically don’t care for lungworts’ slightly hairy leaves. Powdery mildew can be a problem in dense shade. If leaves are diseased, cut them off at ground level; new foliage will grow back. ■

Q You wrote your

first book about houseplants 40 years ago. What do you think of their new popularity? Plants’ therapeutic powers are timeless. The act of nurturing one relieves stress, anxiety, and depression. You don’t need an outdoor space—a windowsill or tabletop will do.

your garden? My big discovery this year has been to turn conventional round tomato cages upside down. I pull the three or four legs together and hold them in place with a small, overturned clay pot. I use the cages this way for dahlias, clematis, morning glories, black-eyed Susan vines, and mandevillas, not to mention tomatoes.

BLACKBERRY-MINT JULEP SPARKLER For mint syrup: In a saucepan combine ½ cup sugar, 2 cups water, and 1 cup chopped mint; bring to boiling, stirring to dissolve sugar. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on the mint to release liquid; discard solids. Let cool. For each cocktail, in a tall glass muddle 3 mint leaves and 2 blackberries. Add 2 oz. bourbon and 2 Tbsp. mint syrup; stir vigorously. Add crushed ice and top with club soda or sparkling water.

Fried chicken probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Mexican menu.

But for Kate Ramos, creating untraditional dishes with Mexican flavors is a way to celebrate the culture’s vibrant and varied foods. Kate, who lives with her family in Southern California, became enamored with Mexican cooking while working in restaurants in Northern California. But it wasn’t until she met her husband, Armando, a first-generation American, that her connection to the cuisine became deeper and more personal. rendan Walsh grew up flying kites and searching for crabs at low tide on the beaches of Cape Cod Bay. Now with three kids of his own, Brendan and his wife, Liz, wanted to pass down those childhood experiences, so they built a house two blocks from Brendan’s parents. “This place is all about happiness,” Liz says. Bits of driftwood, wide cabana stripes, and a few rope accents give the requisite nods to nautical style. However, designer Tharon Anderson helped Liz realize that her vision for a summery seaside home was actually all about color. “Each room has a big splash of color, whether it’s navy cabinets, a Kelly green vanity, or an orange surfboard,” Liz says. The bold colors pop against all-white walls, which, Anderson says, will keep future decor updates simple and inexpensive. When mixing and matching a range of brights, the trick to making them all work together is to choose complementary levels of saturation. This helps the colors support one another and build from room to room, Anderson says. When sand and water from the beach inevitably end up inside, the home’s natural materials—cement floor tiles, woven-grass rugs, and thick canvas upholstery—make it easy to keep things shipshape. Cleanup is fast, freeing the Walshes to get back to celebrating fun, family, and summertime living.

hen it comes to nearly instant gratification, cucumbers have many other garden vegetables beat. In the short span of six to eight weeks the plants go from seed to prolific flowering and fruit. “It’s a satisfying crop, especially for impatient gardeners,” says Shannon McCabe, horticulturist at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Standard cukes always deliver, but it’s worth growing less common varieties for novelty shapes and subtle flavor variations: the trendy cucamelon, yes, but also the tart kiwano or the pickling-ready Parisian gherkin. Some have more compact habits, but all produce refreshing fruit at summer’s peak—just when you need it. Plant cucumbers in a large pot with an obelisk or tomato cage to give them their own space in an edible garden or to add greenery on a patio. Branches trimmed from a smoke bush lashed together with twine form a tower ideal for vining types like the Boston pickling cucumber. To help vines climb, weave wayward stems through the structure.

SOW Choose a spot that gets eight hours of sunlight and sow seeds once soil temperatures reach 70°F. Start three seeds per spot, then then thin weaker seedlings. (Nursery starts work, too, but the unusual varieties are hard to find.)

Cucamelons have smaller leaves than other varieties, but the foliage is especially lush. “The plants cover a trellis better than any cucumber I’ve seen,” McCabe says. Three plants covered the willow grid above. In a large container (this one is 14×28 inches), there may be room for companion plants, such as lettuce, basil, and petunias.

MONITOR FOR PE STS Spotted and striped cucumber beetles are a threat to young plants. Mulch around plants to discourage egg-laying and pick off any bugs on plants. Alternatively, place floating row covers (lightweight garden fabric) over seedlings to keep bugs off; remove when flowering begins.

1. For Lemon Verbena Ice Cream: In a medium saucepan heat milk and verbena or zest just to a simmer over high. Remove from heat; let steep about 30 minutes. Stir in salt. 2. In a medium bowl whisk together sugar and egg yolks until thick and pale. Return milk to a simmer. Gradually whisk 1/2 cup milk mixture into egg mixture. Continue whisking until smooth. Slowly add egg mixture to saucepan, stirring constantly. Cook and stir over medium-low until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon and just starting to bubble. Stir in cream. Press through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl; discard solids. Stir in vanilla. 3. Set mixture in an ice bath to chill, stirring occasionally. Transfer to a 2-qt. ice cream freezer. Freeze according to manufacturer’s directions. 4. For Ginger Shortbread Crust: Grease a 9-inch pie plate. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl beat butter with a mixer on medium 30 seconds. Add flour, sugar, candied ginger, ground ginger, and salt. Beat until a soft dough forms. 5. Press dough evenly into prepared pie plate. Line with a double thickness of greased foil. Fill to top with pie weights. Bake 25 minutes. Remove foil. Bake 10 to 12 minutes more or until dark golden brown. Let cool completely. Freeze at least 1 hour. 6. Spread ice cream into crust. Freeze at least 4 hours or until ice cream is firm. Let stand at room temperature 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Top with herbs and edible flowers. Add 1/2 cup buttermilk and the almond extract;

Meanwhile, in a large bowl combine strawberries, lemon juice, and remaining 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar. Let stand at room temperature at least 30 minutes. 7. In a medium bowl beat remaining 1 cup cream and the powdered sugar with a mixer to stiff peaks. Spread over cake. Top with berries. Understanding what depression may look like is key to helping a loved one through it. We went to the experts for their insights and strategies so you can be there for someone who needs support. AT

Family and friends are often the first to spot changes in mood.

any given time, about 6 percent of Americans are depressed, but because of a mix of factors, including fear of stigma and a sense of isolation, fewer than half of them seek treatment. As a caring friend or family member, you’re in a strong position to be supportive and encourage someone to get help, says Valerie Cordero, Ph.D., coexecutive director of Families for Depression Awareness. Speaking up can be difficult; you may feel a mix of emotions, including fear, frustration, or worry that you might be overreacting. But push past it and reach out, Cordero says. “Listen to your gut. If you sense something is wrong, it probably is.” And most importantly: People who are experiencing depression want to feel listened to, understood, and accepted.

Although a hallmark sign is a persistent blue mood, depression can show up in several other ways. For Heather Jones of Toronto, “sometimes depression looks like afternoon naps, or putting off chores, or needing space. I may be smiling and enjoying your company, but I could be using all of my energy just for that visit or conversation.” One way to spot depression: Look for changing behavioral patterns. “Maybe your always-energetic friend is tired and cancels plans. Maybe she has always liked jogging but is spending more time curled up on the couch,” says Dania March, M.P.H., L.C.S.W., a psychotherapist in Oakland. “These patterns can take weeks or months to appear.” Symptoms can also intensify in winter; shorter days can trigger a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder.

MAJOR LIFE EVENTS CAN BE TRIGGERS Depression can come on the heels of a big disruption, such as a divorce, serious illness, job loss, or death of a loved one or pet. Even presumably happy changes— marriage, a promotion, pregnancy—can lead to depression. “Positive transitions can trigger self-doubt,” March says. “And if that self-doubt grows deep enough, it can lead you down the road to depression.” New moms can be especially at risk due to a constellation of reasons, such as fluctuating hormone levels, poor sleep, and lack of support. Keep checking in on friends and family during times of flux, remind them that whatever they may be feeling is valid, and offer to assist exploring treatment options.

People with mental health conditions are weak. FACT Anyone can develop a mental health condition. There’s no single cause, and it isn’t anyone’s fault. Many factors affect mental health, including biology, environment, and challenging life events.

IT’S OK TO BE DIRECT

If you suspect a loved one is struggling with depression, ask how she’s feeling. “Often, the person pulls away to process her emotions,” says Laurie Barrett of Pittsburgh, who experiences depression. “But this can quickly escalate to loneliness and isolation.” The language you use is important. Try something like, “You seem bummed lately. Your energy feels different. I’ve noticed you canceling plans. I’m not upset but want to check in.” If she opens up about her depression, simply listen. “Avoid saying things like ‘Stop being so negative’ or ‘It will pass.’ This can be dismissive and imply that depression is a choice, which isn’t true,” says Don Mordecai, M.D., national leader for mental health and wellness at Kaiser Permanente. Try offering concrete help like “Can I come over and cook dinner?” A general “Do you need help?” puts the burden on the person with depression to think of an answer, adding more to her overflowing plate.

Antidepressants can be a lifesaver for people with depression. But sometimes people are hesitant to try them. “A common concern is that antidepressants will alter your personality,” says Don Mordecai, M.D. “They affect certain brain chemicals, but what I often hear from people who do well on meds is that they feel more like themselves after taking them.” Personality changes for the worse mean that you should check with your doctor about switching dosages or drugs. Types of meds used to treat depression include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). “You may need to try a few before finding one that works,” says Louann Brizendine, M.D., founder of The Women’s Mood and Hormone Clinic at the University of California, San Francisco. Most who get better on meds see a difference within three to six weeks.

Most people with a mental health condition can get well on their own without professional help. FACT Professional treatment is important and works—just like

for any other condition or disease. More than 80 percent of people who receive treatment for depression improve.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

When your mind is flooded with negative thoughts, it’s easy to feel like a burden, says Theresa Nguyen, L.C.S.W., vice president of policy and programs for Mental Health America. This makes it more likely that you’ll isolate yourself. When a friend does reach out, your brain is in such a fog that you may not even understand what the person is saying, let alone think I need to get better. Getting help can be arduous. “There can be a wait for an appointment, therapists who don’t take insurance, and medications that take a while to work or don’t work,” Nguyen says. “It can feel defeating.” If a loved one balks at seeing a mental health professional, she might be open to other resources. “You can read articles, explore other people’s experiences with depression, or even take an online depression screening at mhascreening.org,” Nguyen says. It doesn’t replace a diagnosis but it can make seeking support less threatening. “It’s painful to unpack what’s making you sad.“

There’s support for those giving support: Mental health first aid courses teach you to identify, understand, and respond to symptoms of mental illness in friends, family members, or even strangers. The eight-hour course addresses both crisis and noncrisis situations, including how to listen nonjudgmentally, offer help and reassurance, and recognize when someone is at risk for suicide or self-harm. It’s usually taught at a public health department, hospital, school, or police station. Find one near you at mentalhealthfirstaid.org.

GETTING THE RIGHT TREATMENT The severity influences the treatment plan. MILD DEPRE SSION Feeling down for a few weeks to a month and possibly beginning to interfere with your work or personal relationships. Often responds well to a combo of therapy and lifestyle changes, such as exercise and mind-body stress-reduction techniques.

MODERATE TO SEVERE DEPRE SSION Can be more wide-reaching: a feeling of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness; a loss of interest in most activities nearly every day for two weeks; a change in sleep, appetite, energy, and/or ability to concentrate. A combination of therapy and medication is most commonly used to alleviate moderate to severe depression. A psychiatrist can provide both. Or a psychologist, social worker, or other mental health professional can provide therapy and a psychiatrist the meds. n

If you’re one of the 54 percent of Americans who still gets paper bank and credit card statements, shred them (along with receipts and bills) annually after you’ve fi led your taxes, says Andrew O. Smith, author of Financial Literacy for Millennials. Most fi nancial statements are easily retrieved online for at least fi ve years. When it comes to shredding the statements, choose a shredder that can handle multiple sheets and staples and paper clips. Try the Swingline Style+Super Cross-Cut Shredder ($189; swingline.com).

Keep hard copies, scan, and hold onto vehicle titles, real estate or property records, and insurance policies for as long as you own them. What to keep indefi nitely: birth, marriage, and death certifi cates; Social Security cards; health care proxies; and wills. Store hard copies in a safe-deposit box or fi reproof safe. Save scans using a service such as CertainSafe (starts at $12 per month) or Dropbox (free for 2 GB of space). Consider the Epson DS-320 scanner ($250; epson.com). It’s portable, and you can scan directly to an online account.

Protect access to online fi nancial accounts with a password you change every three months. Apps such as Dashlane (free for one device or $5 monthly for unlimited devices) or LastPass (free or $36 for the premium) help you do that. Keep a record of passwords in a safe place so your accounts can be accessed in an emergency, says certifi ed fi nancial planner Nancy Coutu, cofounder of Money Managers Financial Group in Oak Brook, IL. Consider a separate email address for statements and bills, and review them monthly so you can spot fraud ASAP.

KEEP TAX RETURNS HOW LONG?

Stick with the seven-year rule even though your audit risk lasts only three years from the date you fi le. What qualifi es as a tax record? Anything that’s evidence of income, (W-2s, 1099s), deductible expenses, or a tax credit (papers proving tuition or childcare payments or retirement-plan contributions). Also keep health insurance records.

CREATE A GO KIT

Just as we should have one, so should our pets. If you’re faced with evacuating for a hurricane, wildfire, flooding, or even a power outage, being prepared can make a big difference in quickly getting your animals to safety, says Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. In addition to enough food and water for at least five days and supplies your pet uses daily (medicines, a leash or harness, carrier, and blanket), include current photos

and descriptions of your pets in case they go missing. Write down your pets’ feeding schedules, vet contact info, and any behavioral or medical issues. Record the info on a sheet of paper that you laminate, or write it in a notebook that has a copy of your pets’ vaccination records stapled into it. Remember to update it once a year.

MAP OUT A SAFE HAVEN

The key is to know your options should you need to evacuate. Start by making a list of hotels that allow pets. (Try the free BringFido app or petswelcome .com to find pet-friendly hotels.) Contact your city or state office of emergency management to find out where pet-friendly shelters will be located. Also check with animal shelters

or kennels within driving distance to see if they can take in animals during crises, Block says. Another strategy: “Have a pet buddy,” advises Nicole Forsyth, president and CEO of RedRover in Sacramento. Ask a friend or family member who lives within driving distance if they could help your pet in an emergency; give them what they need to access your pet in your absence.

THINK ABOUT A MICROCHIP

It’s an added layer of insurance (in addition to a collar tag) in case you’re separated. In fact, one study of pets in shelters showed that ones with microchips had a higher rate of return to their families. All it takes is a quick shot to insert the microchip under your pet’s skin. You then register the chip online for about $20; if your pet is ever lost and ends up at a shelter or vet, they can scan the chip to contact you. n
