Other etymologists argue that the word April comes from the Latin aperire, meaning “to open.” I like that idea a lot. Spring is about the opening of buds, opening of windows and opening of hearts. And how about an openness to new ideas or new ways of doing things? I’d like to suggest we start with the way we communicate. The metric we use most often to measure communication is how well we choose our words, but that’s only half of it. If you really want to open up new channels, pay equal attention to how well you listen. Have you ever found yourself yelling at your child or partner or sibling, “You aren’t listening to me!” The withering look they give you in response says, “Oh, I hear you MXVW ¿QH ´ %XW KHDULQJ DQG OLVWHQLQJ DUH YHU\ GLIferent. Hearing requires ears; listening requires understanding. And if you really felt understood, you probably wouldn’t have been yelling. of conversation. Learn to park your thoughts in short-term memory rather than interrupt; your time will come. Then, listen with your whole body, not just your ears. You’d be amazed how people open up when we lean in, make eye contact, use our faces to mirror the emotion we’re seeing on the other person’s face. Ask questions to ensure that you understand fully and correctly and to encourage your friend or loved one to say more. Pay attention not only to the words but also to the more nuanced meanings expressed in body language. $QG SOHDVH WXUQ R̆ \RXU SKRQH <RX WKLQN ,¶P being a smart-alec, but I mean it. About half of the couples I see in counselling are there because one of them feels usurped by the other’s relationship with the phone. Artful listening involves hearing, feeling and full attention.

We know what you’re thinking: “Supersavers” are about as real as superheroes. With the rising cost of pretty much everything under the sun— childcare, fresh fruit, your smartphone bill (gasp!)—plus the fact that we Canadians owe $1.71 for every $1 of disposable income we make, saving money seems like a pipe dream. 46 | CANADIAN LIVING APRIL 2018
News flash: It doesn’t have to be. All superspenders really need is a crash course in money management and a little financial know-how from a few of the country’s most successful money mavens. We found out how to pinch pennies, stretch dollars and squirrel away funds for that ever-looming rainy day.
“I like $6 lattes.” Supersavers say “We like $6 lattes, too, but that doesn’t mean they should be a habit.” Free advice This is one of those extra costs that’ll creep up, leaving you none the wiser until, of course, you do the math. Allow us: Just three tasty beverages a week adds up to more than $900 a year. “If you think in terms of eating loonies instead of consuming drinks, it can help put things in perspective,” says Cynthia Kett, a Toronto-based certified professional accountant and certified financial planner. Don’t worry—we’re not suggesting eliminating your java altogether; likewise for indulgences such as eating out and buying (instead of bagging) lunch. “Dining out is a social activity,” says Kett. “Consider which meal rituals give you the most pleasure and keep those, but reduce the number per week. For instance, have a latte on Monday, go for lunch on Wednesday and make dinner reservations for Saturday. You’ll have something to look forward to nearly every other day.”
“I can’t afford to open a TFSA or an RRSP.” Supersavers say “You can’t afford not to open one (or both) of these savings vehicles.” Free advice Good savers adhere to this easy-to-follow rule: Pay yourself first. What does it mean, though? Set up your bank account so that with, say, each paycheque, some money (even just $10) automatically goes into a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP), tax-free savings account (TFSA) or— at the very least—a regular savings account. “The money you don’t see in your chequing account likely won’t be missed,” says Laura Chanin, an investment adviser and certified financial planner in Vancouver and Surrey, B.C.
“I’m an impulse buyer.” “Spending diets never work.” Supersavers say “Never open your wallet without asking yourself a few key questions.” Free advice Chanin says a self-imposed cooling-off period before bigger buys (and even smaller purchases) is a classic move among savers. “If you find something you want, think about it for at least 24 hours,” she says. Try some internal dialogue: Do I really need that purse? If yes, ask yourself if you can afford it now. If you need it and can afford it, then see if there’s a way to get it for a lower cost. And if you don’t need it or can’t afford it now but still covet it, make a plan to save for it. Always remember, says Chanin, that “slowing down your spending will give you a greater sense of control, and the pride in that typically lasts longer than the emotional high you get when you hear that satisfying beep indicating your debit or credit card payment has been approved.”
Supersavers say “We almost agree. Spending diets often fail miserably (much like food diets), but they can work in some circumstances.” Free advice “If someone told me that I couldn’t eat dessert for a month, I’d fail. If I’m sticking to eating dessert once or twice a week, though, that’s sustainable for me,” says Kett. The only times in which these financial diets might work are to meet short-term goals (a vacation in six months, a wedding a year from now, a home purchase in two years). “When the financial pain is limited to a specific time frame, it’s more tolerable.”

Free advice Budgeting isn’t one of those pointless projects financial experts recommend. “The pure act of being aware of what’s going in and out of your bank account each month increases your probability of saving by more than three times,” says Lesley-Anne Scorgie, a financial expert, bestselling author and owner of MeVest, a service that offers money coaching and financial planning countrywide. Try a budgeting app like Mint that tracks when and where your money is going. Some apps will also send a notification to your smartphone if you’re off budget.

Supersavers say “Credit card interest wreaks havoc on your bank account.” Free advice Spenders may think they know the consequences of credit card interest, but statistics show they’re full of it. Last September, research conducted by creditreport bureau Equifax found that in the second quarter of 2017, the average Canadian carried about $22,595 in debt from credit lines and cards. Kett says it’s never a good idea to finance nonessential spending with ongoing credit card debt—interest rates are just too high. Think about it: Say the interest rate on your card is 19.99 percent and you pull out your plastic to drop $1,000 on a week at an allinclusive. If that’s the only purchase on your card and you make the minimum monthly payment (normally, three percent, or $10, whichever is greater), you’ll be forking out cash for that vacation for just shy of 11 years, and it will end up costing you almost double, thanks to the $989 in interest you’ll be hit with. Having chums you rely on, trust and relish EHLQJ ZLWK KDV SOHQW\ RI EHQH¿WV (aside from them understanding \RXU FU\SWLF HPRML ¿OOHG WH[WV “Strong social support has been associated with increased longevity, a boosted immune system and lower rates of depression,” says Andrea Bonior, a Washingtonbased psychologist and author of The Friendship Fix, who hosts a weekly live chat about relationships on washingtonpost.com. What’s more, a 2017 study in the journal Personal Relationships found that while family life adds to happiness and well-being, connections with pals have a greater impact later in life. The thing is, not all bonds are made to last. If a bestie is bumming you out more than lifting you up, it might be time to break up. Toxic tip-off: She refuses to celebrate your successes. Whether you’ve earned a promotion at work, your child has reached an important milestone RU \RX¶YH KLW D ORQJ DZDLWHG ¿WQHVV JRDO LW¶V a problem when friends cannot or will not revel with you in those thrilling “ups” in your life and truly enjoy your achievements, says Degges-White. Real pals aren’t into letting jealously rear its ugly head. Instead, friends “witness your changing life and want to know the GHSWK RI ZKDW \RX¶UH H[SHULHQFLQJ ´ VD\V 0DULD Schmid, a Calgary-based psychologist. Toxic tip-off: She takes and takes (and takes). Let’s be honest: A moocher will do little for you besides take advantage of your friendship— getting in touch when she needs a ride; conveniently forgetting to bring her wallet to the restaurant (again); and needing your shoulder to cry on, your hand to hold and your advice and companionship when it’s favourable for her. But when the tables are turned and you need her, she’s MIA. Not cool, says Bonior. “If you don’t feel that the friendship is reciprocal, there’s a major imbalance in what one person is giving versus what the other is giving,” she says.
Toxic tip-off: She’s never present. She won’t give you the time of GD\ EHFDXVH VKH¶V IRUHYHU ¿[HG on her smartphone, a television or anything else that’s not your face, even when you’re desperately trying to engage in conversation. Friends who stand the test of time are present, says

And for those occasions when you do get together (these times are bound to be fewer and farther between, by the way), or if you happen to bump into her, Bonior says it will feel like a chore and end up doing little more than H[KDXVW \RX
Toxic tip-off: She isolates you. Isolation is a serious warning sign of abuse when it comes to romantic relationships, and it can be just as damning in friend-
ships. Take notice if you have a friend who “tries to isolate you from other relationships in your life, makes negative comments about your romantic partners or other friends and takes control of planning outings without respect for your interests,” says DeggesWhite. If this so-called pal is manipulating what you do, where you go and the people you see, it may cause family and true friends to become estranged.
Toxic tip-off: You’re not yourself when you’re with her. Bonior says a friend who does more harm than good can turn you into someone you don’t recognize—or even like—when you’re with her. had the most impact on their health and lifestyle. Perhaps more tellingly, less than oneWKLUG RI WKRVH VXUYH\HG SHUcent) proactively distance themselves from friends who engage in unhealthy behaviour.
Toxic tip-off: She gives you friendship whiplash. She’s hot and cold. She comes and goes. She’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is the friend \RX¶OO ¿QG \RXUVHOI WLSWRHLQJ around, forever walking on eggshells. If that analogy doesn’t do it for you, this is the friendship that makes you feel like you’re on a roller-coaster that just won’t end. Need another cliché? 6KH¶V OLNH D ER[ RI FKRFRODWHV you never know what you’re going to get. This is just one PRUH H[DPSOH VD\V %RQLRU RI someone who “actively causes stress and drama that’s detrimental to your health, making the ‘friendship’ have the oppoVLWH H̆HFW WKDQ LW VKRXOG ´
’Cause Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

The big question: Is it worth trying to salvage a friendship with a crummy chum, or should you sever all ties before she drags you down further and goes from friend to frenemy? It depends on the type of friendship you have with her, says Degges-White. “When a formerly strong, rewarding or instrumental friendship VRXUV LW¶V GH¿QLWHO\ WLPH WR EULQJ XS D GLVFXVsion concerning your feelings surrounding the changes. Sometimes friendships hit bumps along the way, as any intimate relationship might,” she says. “If it’s a pal whose presence in your life you value, being up front about your concerns early on is the best path.” If not, or if having the talk yields no results, it may be time to cut ties, guilt-free. Degges-White says these techniques can help: Don’t drag it out; don’t “ghost,” unless you really only communicate via social media or text; own your feelings by using “I” statements; and avoid collateral damage. “If other friends may feel the need to take sides, approach them as soon as possible, so potentially tricky social situations can be prevented,” she says. “In the case of mutual friends, be prepared for some casualties.”

Why do environmental sensitivities affect more women than men?
Dr. Marshall says “Environmental sensitivities describes a chronic condition whereby a person has symptoms when exposed to certain chemicals or environmental agents at low levels tolerated by most people. Most appear fine, but in fact, they might be suffering with several symptoms, including crushing fatigue, pain, mental fog and rapid heartbeat. The main reason that more women than men are affected is not known; however, there are various factors that might contribute to this disparity. Research has shown that, in some situations, women react differently than men when exposed to the same toxic substances. On average, women have 10 percent more body fat than men and can store more fatsoluble toxins. In addition, having a lower body weight, along with hormonal differences, can leave them more vulnerable. Women may also be using a higher volume of materials containing toxic and potentially harmful substances, including cleaning solvents and beauty products.”

I’ve heard a lot about PCOS lately. What is it and what are the symptoms?
Dr. Kelly says “Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common hormonal disorder that affects approximately two million women in Canada. The exact cause is unknown, but it’s believed to stem from a hormonal disruption. There are a variety of symptoms, ranging from an irregular menstrual cycle, where you may not bleed for several months, to a period that may be quite heavy and last longer than usual. Some women notice an increase in hair growth on their face or body— chest, back, midsection—while others experience significant weight gain. PCOS also significantly increases your risk for Type 2 diabetes mellitus. If you have any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor.”

What can my bowel movements and schedule tell me about my overall health?
Dr. Zenlea says “There is no correct answer for what your stool should look like or how often you should have a bowel movement. Instead, what’s important is that you feel comfortable, and that your bowel habits aren’t getting in the way of your day-to-day life. If that’s not the case, then it’s worth bringing this up with your doctor. He or she will be able to help you with your symptoms and confirm whether something more serious is going on. A red flag is when there’s a sudden change in your bowel habits, or if you see blood in your stool—that can be indicative of something more concerning and warrants a visit to your physician. Small variations from day to day are fine, and those are usually due to changes in what you’ve been eating.”

Our gut can carry more than 1,000 difference species of bacteria (collectively known as our microbiome). These are beneficial bacteria that aid digestion, help boost our metabolism and break down food so our bodies can absorb the nutrients we need to function.
The large intestine is the most highly colonized by bacteria that help us digest foods we otherwise couldn't, such as complex carbohydrates. Research has shown that poor gut health may be connected to conditions like allergies, arthritis, autoimmune diseases and mood disorders.

A healthy gut equals a strong immune system. The gut’s microbiome functions as a bouncer, deciding what’s allowed to pass through into the bloodstream. The patrons awaiting entry range from essential nutrients to dangerous pathogens and toxins. A diverse group of healthy microorganisms in the gut makes it better able to protect itself from potentially harmful invaders.

The consumption of more processed foods and less fibre has negatively influenced the makeup and diversity of good bacteria in our gut. To keep things running smoothly, eat an abundance of fresh produce, avoid high-fat and high-sugar diets, and increase your fibre intake.
Aim for 25 grams of fibre a day. Look for a combination of soluble (in fruits, vegetables and grains, including psyllium) and insoluble fibre (in beans and leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale and chard), which helps move waste out of the body.
Try fermented foods such as kimchi, miso, sauerkraut, kefir and certain yogurts; they're packed with natural microbes that nourish the gut and populate it with good bacteria. Antibiotics kill all forms of bacteria—both good and bad. Even if you eat a wholesome diet, taking antibiotics can adversely alter the composition of your gut and contribute to a host of chronic disease by eliminating the good bacteria in the digestive tract.

HOW TO
1 Chop the cabbage into large pieces; place
in the stockpot with the water. Bring to a boil; simmer for 1 hour.
2 Meanwhile, place a cutting facedown on an
egg. Holding the cutting in place, cover the egg with a piece of pantyhose, pulling the edges together tightly at the back of the egg; secure with a rubber band. Repeat with the other eggs.

Remove the cabbage from the pot; discard. Add the vinegar to the water in the pot.

Carefully place the prepared eggs in the pot. Boil for 10 minutes; remove from the heat. Let the eggs and dye cool to room temperature; cover and refrigerate overnight or until the eggs have reached the desired colour. (The longer the eggs sit in the dye, the more intense their colour will become.)

Remove the pot from the refrigerator; bring to room temperature. Remove an egg from the dye. Using the scissors, snip the rubber band; discard along with the cutting and the pantyhose. Using a paper towel, dab away any excess liquid on the egg; place on a few sheets of paper towel to let dry completely. Repeat with the other eggs.
Dyed using cabbage and vinegar, these pretty eggs resemble vintage jasperware.

Learn how homeware retailer and master decorator Michael Penney dressed his home for Easter with ease. Delightful Easter decor is a hop, skip and a jump away at Michael Penney’s Oshawa, Ont., home. Furnished mostly with goods from his chic Whitby-based shop, Penney & Co., the circa-’30s house boasts a muted palette and a pleasing updated traditional esthetic. “There’s no strong colour scheme, so I can switch things up without much fuss,” says Penney. Keen to create a cute-not-kitsch, sweet-not-saccharine spring atmosphere, this design-savvy homeowner decorated sparingly, concentrating displays in a few central zones. Here, we highlight these masterful moments.

ENERGIZER BUNNY On the living-room fireplace mantel, off-white McCoy and Haeger pottery gets a simple holiday makeover with grocerystore tulips, found branches and ready-made ornaments. The rabbit-themed garland subtly references Easter.
SPRING FLING “Instead of dotting flowers around your house, make a statement in a key area by grouping them,” says Penney. Daffodils, lilies of the valley, tulips, hyacinths, pussy willows and muscari—all the spring favourites are represented in this floral display, which sits on an antique dresser, centrally located in the living room. Hyper-utilitarian vessels keep the look from being too precious.

The sunny runner, a vibrant forsythia garland, is actually fake. “With an artificial garland, you get an inexpensive accent that you can use year after year,” says the decorator, who fooled the eye—and nose— by tucking in a few fragrant cuttings of the real thing.
SET THE MOOD Formal gilded dinnerware and heirloom silverware are balanced with downto-earth woven placemats. The mix is a great example of this decorator’s casual-meets-elegant spin on style. “I also like these place settings for Easter because they reference a bird’s nest and eggs,” he says. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. In large bowl,
