Depending on the intensity of your natural red hair, going blond can be a daunting task, says L’Oréal Paris Canada’s hair expert and artist, Brennen Demelo. “To be successful, you need a lightening treatment that is high enough to achieve the desired shade of blond: seven levels of lightening to get to platinum, compared to two to three for a softer blond.” Opt for an ashy blond in order to neutralize the golden undertones of your naturally red tresses.

“If your hair is dark brown and you want a very pale blond, you’ll need to lighten it with bleach first,” says Demelo. Then, a toner is applied to bring your hair about two shades lighter than what you want. On the other hand, if your natural colour is light brown, or you’re aiming for a softer or darker blond, lightening up to three levels is sufficient. You can also opt for balayage, a freehand highlighting technique, that adds dimension and

“The rule of thumb for achieving a naturallooking red is to choose a shade that’s within two tone levels of your natural colour. So, if you’re blond, go for a light auburn or auburnblond,” says Freidag. Since blond hair doesn’t need to be lightened before applying colour, using demi-, semipermanent or temporary hair dye is an option. Demi-permanent dye lasts for up to 28 shampoos, while semipermanent fades after three to six washes, and temporary comes out after one wash.

Brown is spoiled for choice; you can afford auburn and bright red as well as burgundy. “When switching to a shade lighter than your natural colour, the ideal is to prepare the hair with a balayage treatment, then apply the permanent colour,” says Freidag. If you fancy a darker shade, then a demi-permanent product in a deep red like burgundy or auburn works perfectly.

At home, you will need to be patient; this is a gradual process that requires the application of a lighter shade throughout the

Damned Spot Everyone’s endured having the odd pimple, but nothing brings back teen angst like adult acne. While 80 percent of young people experience some form of acne, many adults also deal with breakouts. If you're one of them, read on to learn how to keep blemishes at bay. TEXT JESSICA DOSTIE

Acne is the result of excess sebum clogging the pores, which leads to inflammation, redness and swelling. Several factors can lead to flare-ups or breakouts in adults, including heredity, an imbalance in the skin microbiome, stress, pollution, certain medications, and cosmetics. The global pandemic and mask mandates have also lead to a phenomenon called “mascne,” in which some people experience

breakouts on the bottom half of the face due to facial coverings. Women account for about threequarters of adult acne sufferers— commonly associated with the menstrual cycle. Hormonal fluctuations can contribute to what’s called cyclical acne, which occurs around the time of your period; these fluctuations can also cause flare-ups during pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause.

Banish Breakouts Cleanse

It’s important to remove impurities by washing your face twice a day, but no more than that—overwashing can lead to dehydration, causing your skin to overproduce sebum to compensate. Ditch the soap in order to protect the delicate skin barrier and swap it out for a gentle unscented facial cleanser. Basic treatments for mild acne often include benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. It’s not only about cleansing the skin, but also about laundering pillowcases, sheets and face masks often, and regularly washing makeup brushes with an antimicrobial soap.

We had the chance to have a (virtual) catch-up with the award-winning actor and Neutrogena spokeswoman about her beauty routine, self-care rituals and the key to maintaining glowing skin. Please give us a walkthrough of your morning and evening skin-care routines. It’s different all the time. I’m a working mom… but I can tell you what it usually looks like. I try to drink water first thing in the morning. Hydration is very important to me, and important to everyone, when it comes to skin health— hydration on the inside and outside! I have very sensitive skin, so my cleansing routine changes depending on the season, and I vary the products I use accordingly. I’m obsessed with the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser. If I’m travelling and I’m not sure what I’m going to encounter, it’s proven to be a consistent staple that I can adjust my moisturizers around. At night, I double cleanse by using wipes first, then the cleanser. If the weather’s dry, I apply Neutrogena Hyaluronic Acid Serum before my moisturizer. It’s one of the products I’m most excited about— it’s so hydrating I often joke that I’d put it in a sandwich if I could!

How has your approach to skin care and beauty changed over the last 20 years? I just think about it more. I’ve had eczema all my life, so I love working with a brand that’s so beloved by dermatologists. Being able to exist with eczema can be really challenging. I also think about keeping my skin hydrated, fresh and supple, and that has come more with age. It includes focusing more on cleansing, since what I do for a living involves wearing tons and tons of makeup. I get to put lots of it on to feel beautiful, but I want to make sure that when I take it off, I feel beautiful as well.

Q

What is one piece of advice you’d give women to feel confident as they age? When I was a kid, in the group of girls I grew up with, I wasn’t perceived as the “pretty” one. I had to learn to have my value come from who I am, not how I look. That’s a big part of it. Not attaching my value and my worth to my looks has so far allowed me to weave through life as my face and body change, knowing and loving that it’s

part of who I am but not the totality of who I am. I gravitate toward and love using products that make me feel like I’m not trying to hide myself or pretend to be somebody else. I’m just being the very best version of me. I don’t have to be me 20 years ago, but I do want to be the very best version of who I am today. So my advice would be that it’s not about going to extremes, it's about what self-care looks like to you. Anyone can engage in self-care.

Q

How does food play a role in your wellness routine? Is there anything our readers would be surprised to find in your kitchen or refrigerator? I feel like I’m a one trick pony when I say hydration, hydration, hydration! But I do try to eat waterdense foods, like lots of fruits and veggies, that allow me to stay hydrated throughout the day. Also, I’m obsessed with coconut yogurt. I’m not even vegan, I do eat dairy, but I love coconuts and I love rich yogurt, so coconut yogurt is my happy place. And I always have dark chocolate in my kitchen. I’m a big dark chocolate fan.

Q

As we’ve seen on Instagram, we know you practice and enjoy yoga—are there any other self-care rituals you swear by? I love swimming, which is ironic because I have to be more aware of hydration, since the skin gets really dry if you swim a lot. Swimming really calms my nerves, it’s great exercise and it’s a place where as a family, with my kids, we can really play. I also try, imperfectly, to spend time in prayer and meditation every morning. I find those to be really good practices for me.

Now enjoyed all over the world, this tea only grows in its homeland, South Africa, where it has been used medicinally for centuries. Traditionally, the tea leaves are fermented, turning them a reddish-brown colour; however, there is also a green, unfermented variety that boasts even more antioxidants. • TEA TIME It’s been said that a cup of tea solves everything, and that might very well be true. Drinking tea is associated with many health benefits, including a lowered risk of serious conditions like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Herbal teas, particularly, are an easy way to increase your intake of potentially health-promoting phytochemicals. While there is a demonstrated positive link between habitual consumption of green or black tea and bone mineral density, recent studies from researchers at Brock University in Ontario suggest that the polyphenols in red rooibos have potential benefits for bone health, too. Recognized as a functional food with preventive and therapeutic benefits, rooibos's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may also possess immune-modulating and chemopreventive effects.

• THIRST QUENCHER This flavourful tea can be served hot or cold, sweetened or unsweetened, with or without milk...whichever way your heart desires. Loaded with natural antioxidants and caffeine-free, rooibos is a superb alternative to black or green tea. Not only that, it’s also free from oxalic acid and low in tannins, so it’s a good option for those with kidney issues. The tannins in tea can produce a bitter flavour, but rooibos has a naturally delicate, sweet flavour, making it an excellent alternative to other beverages, too. Plus, it might be better for your teeth when compared with juice or pop. The acids and refined sugars found in soda and citrus juice promote the erosion of enamel on the surface of your teeth, and once it’s been depleted, it’s lost forever. The erosive effect of tea on your teeth is similar to water. Rooibos also contains fluoride, which is proven to protect against tooth decay.

• SINGULAR SOURCE Antioxidant-rich rooibos is the only known natural source of aspalathin, a flavonoid with established blood glucose-lowering properties. Good news for people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes: Research suggests this compound may have beneficial anti-diabetic effects, including balancing blood sugar levels, reducing insulin resistance and suppressing vascular inflammation. lime vanilla bean candied pineapple, cut in 1/4-inch pieces unsweetened shredded coconut rooibos tea leaves

Using sharp vegetable peeler, remove zest, without white pith, from lime in large strips. (Reserve lime for another use.) Finely julienne zest, then cut in ¼-inch pieces. Spread on parchment paper-lined baking sheet and let dry at room temperature, in a dry place, about 24 hours. Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise, then cut in 1/4-inch pieces. In bowl, combine vanilla, dried lime zest, pineapple, coconut and rooibos. (Store tea in an airtight container in a dark place for up to 6 months.) Infuse 1 tbsp of tea blend in 1 cup of boiling water.

Common Ailments Aches & Pains Analgesic medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen (such as Tylenol, Advil and Aleve, respectively) are common overthe-counter painkillers. “There are differences among pain relievers, so it’s definitely a good idea to have a chat with your health-care provider about when you might choose one product over another,” says Kizlyk. Topical agents, whether patches or creams, can be effective for sore muscles or joint pain, says Dr. Konstantynowicz. Prescott also recommends topical treatments containing menthol or camphor, since these ingredients contain substance P inhibitors, which may help to decrease the sensation of pain in the body. Fevers “Fever plays a role in helping your body kill off an infection,” says Prescott, “so it’s important to know when to treat it with medication.” Normal body temperature averages around 37°C but can fluctuate as much as 0.6°C during the day. A fever is considered at a thermometer reading at or above 37.6°C (oral or underarm) or 38°C (rectal or ear). Infants less than three months old, children appearing very sick (very sleepy, confused, irritable, crying inconsolably), anyone with a stiff neck or seizure, new wheeze or cough, or people undergoing chemotherapy who have a fever should receive immediate medical attention. Fever is a symptom, says Kizlyk. “It’s generally not harmful and usually resolves without treatment.” To treat the discomfort of fever, you can use OTC medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, which come in pills, capsules, liquids and chewable tablets. Prescott adds that “hydration is essential as fevers burn up your fluids.” She recommends a low-sugar electrolyte tablet that provides your body with the necessary nutrients to effectively absorb water. Allergies As a potential alternative to conventional allergy medication for non-emergency, seasonal afflictions like hay fever, Prescott suggests “trying a quercetin supplement, which is a mast cell stabilizer and helps stop the allergic cascading response in the body.” 50 | CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2021

But since you never know when an allergic reaction might pop up, it’s a good idea to have a general allpurpose antihistamine (like Benadryl) on hand that works on both seasonal allergies and allergic reactions. If medication is something you take every day, “your pharmacist can help you choose certain products over others to avoid drowsiness or to target specific symptoms,” says Kizlyk.

Coughs & Colds Among the most effective treatments for coughs and colds are the preventive ones. Prescott suggests a natural sore throat spray, which can help prevent colds and also treat sore throats. Zinc lozenges are also a good preventive option because they stimulate the immune system. Since minerals don’t leave your body as quickly, she advises, “only taking zinc right before you feel a cold coming on or while you have it, and that’s it. Longterm use is not recommended.” Once the cough or cold has set in, treat the specific symptoms that you’re experiencing. For stuffy noses, Kizlyk suggests a decongestant (like Sudafed), and for runny noses, an antihistamine. When it comes to a cough, there are plenty of cough suppressants and syrups on the market, but Kizlyk warns, “there isn’t a lot of proof that cough medicines work well, so it may be worth talking about other options with your health-care provider.” Keep in mind that “for children under 6, the general recommendation is to avoid multipurpose cough and cold medications, as they may be more harmful than helpful,” says Kizlyk. Skin Conditions For a really good multitasking treatment, Kizlyk recommends a hydrocortisone cream because it’ll work on pesky insect bites, skin rashes and itchy spots. “Natural ingredients, like calendula and oat (Avena sativa), can also be effective for calming irritated skin due to bug bites or rashes,” says Prescott. “Keep in mind, though, they may not address the underlying issue.”

Bumps & Scrapes For open wounds, an antibiotic ointment is key, and many experts recommend using a triple formulation (like Polysporin) since it both protects against infection and aids in healing. There are natural alternatives out there as well. “Tea tree oil is great for preventing


infection in little cuts or scratches and seems to improve healing,” says Prescott. For bumps and bruises, the co-founder and president of Zax Healthcare Inc., Alyssa Rolnick, recommends the brand’s top-selling bruise cream. Also available is a heel spur cream specifically for relief from plantar fasciitis and foot pain. Packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients, it also works wonders on the dry, cracked skin of the feet.

Did you know that food can also be used to treat certain complaints? Dr. Konstantynowicz recommends the BRATT diet for looser bowels: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and tea, which are all easily digestible and help to settle the tummy. For constipation, she recommends increasing liquids and foods high in fibre, and avoiding binding foods like cheese. For bloating and gas, Prescott suggests a digestive enzyme complex, which contains plant-based nutrients and enzymes that help your body digest your food. For heartburn, most people find an OTC antacid (like TUMS) can work for them. As an alternative, the naturopath recommends deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL, “which comes in a chewable tablet that treats heartburn and also coats the esophagus and helps prevent damage.” For persistent or recurring heartburn or other tummy troubles, it’s important to have a conversation with your health-care provider to see if there are underlying issues in need of further treatment.

Tummy Troubles Stomach pain can be tricky, because it comes with a wide variety of symptoms. So a good start is an all-purpose bismuth subsalicylate product (like Pepto-Bismol) for the breadth of treatment options it provides—we all know the jingle. This quirky, knobbly rhizome contains fibrous flesh with a fresh aroma and spicy flavour. Ginger originated in Southeast Asia and, incredibly versatile, it’s now used in cuisines around the world—it can be grated, ground or slivered and added to both sweet and savoury dishes. India is the world’s largest producer of ginger, but it’s also grown in greenhouses across Canada; plus, it’s quite easy to grow yourself! To prepare fresh ginger, peel off the thin outer layer using the edge of a spoon, then grate the flesh. Place small mounds of grated ginger on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and freeze for one hour. Transfer to a resealable plastic bag until ready to use. Ginger can be frozen for up to one year.

Chocolate Crust Preheat oven to 350°F. In bowl, combine cookie and graham cracker crumbs and salt. Add butter and mix until moist. With your hands, press mixture into bottoms and up edges of six 4-inch tart pans with removable bottoms. Place tart pans on baking sheet; bake for 10 minutes. Place pans on rack and let cool completely. Passion Fruit Filling Meanwhile, cut 6 passion fruits in half. Using teaVSRRQ UHPRYH ÀHVK DQG SODFH LQ ERZO Add lemon juice and ginger; mix to coat. In saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch and vanilla. Add eggs and passion fruit mixture; whisk together. Bring to boil; cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly. Remove from heat.

granulated sugar cinnamon, divided unsalted butter, divided 1-inch thick slices brioche bread brown sugar star anise pineapple, peeled and cut in 1-inch cubes 1 1/3 cups coconut-flavoured ice cream 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, toasted

In bowl, combine sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Set aside. In large skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Cook brioche slices, turning once, until golden, about 4 minutes. Place on rack and sprinkle with reserved cinnamon-sugar mixture. In same skillet, melt remaining butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, 2 tbsp water, star anise and remaining cinnamon until brown sugar is dissolved, 2 minutes. Add pineapple and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized on all sides, about 8 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and discard star anise. Place one brioche slice on each plate. Spoon caramelized pineapple and ice cream over brioche. Drizzle with any juices left in skillet; sprinkle with coconut. In large saucepan, heat 1 tbsp of the oil over medium-high heat. Add pork; cook, stirring, until golden on all sides, 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper; transfer to plate. In same saucepan, heat remaining oil over medium heat; cook onion, stirring often, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and curry paste; cook, stirring, 2 minutes. Add broth, scraping up any browned bits from bottom of pan; bring to boil. Stir in FRFRQXW PLON DQG ¿VK VDXFH VHDVRQ with salt. Reduce heat, simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Return pork to saucepan; add potatoes and lychees. Simmer until potatoes are tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Add bok choy; cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. To serve, divide curry among bowls. Sprinkle with green onions, peanuts, Thai basil and Thai pepper, if desired.
