3 Get Busy New research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests that too much free time isn’t always a good thing. As people’s spare time increases, so too does their sense of well-being…but only to a certain point. Researchers found that the link between free time and well-being tended to level off at about two hours a day, and actually began to drop after five. The upshot: Strive to spend a moderate amount of free time however you’d like, and if you’re lucky enough to have loads of spare time, you may benefit from spending it on constructive activities, like working out or hobbies.

The parsnip is a long, tapering creamy-white root vegetable that is closely related to carrots and parsley. Parsnips have a distinctive taste, sweet but with nutty, earthy notes. Introduced to North America simultaneously by English and French colonists, the parsnip is very well-suited to our climate. Parsnips are generally available all year long, but their peak period is during the fall and winter, particularly after the first frost when the starch turns to sugar, giving the parsnip a pleasantly sweet flavour. In Europe, the vegetable was commonly used as a source of sugar before cane and beet sugars were available. In this issue, we’re roasting up parsnips with carrots and celeriac and serving them with a delectable coriander hummus. Find the recipe on page 81.

SQUASH & BACON PENNE GRATIN MAKES 4 TO 6 SERVINGS HANDS-ON TIME 25 MINUTES TOTAL TIME 1 HOUR 5 MINUTES

small butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut in 1-inch cubes 2 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper 340 g penne or other short pasta 8 strips bacon, cut in pieces 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 2 tsp chopped fresh sage 1/2 cup sodium-reduced chicken broth 3 cups tomato sauce 2 cups shredded medium Cheddar cheese Preheat oven to 400°F. On baking sheet, combine squash and oil; season with salt and pepper. Arrange squash in single layer and bake until tender EXW VWLOO VOLJKWO\ ¿UP DERXW 20 minutes. Leave oven on. Meanwhile, in large saucepan of boiling salted water, cook penne until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and set aside. In saucepan, cook bacon over medium heat, stirring, until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer bacon to paper towellined plate. Degrease pan, leaving 2 tbsp cooking fat. Add garlic, walnuts and sage; cook, stirring often, about 1 minute. Add roasted squash and bacon; cook for 2 minutes. Stir in broth and tomato sauce; bring to boil. Add pasta and toss to coat. Transfer penne mixture to baking dish or ovenproof skillet. Sprinkle with cheese and bake until cheese is melted and golden, 8 to 10 minutes. PER EACH OF 6 SERVINGS about 600 cal, 26 g pro, 27 g total fat (9 g sat. fat), 63 g carb (6 g dietary fibre, 10 g sugar), 55 mg chol, 1,050 mg sodium, 3.8 mg iron.

FLAWLESS FACE Less is more, says Montreal-based makeup artist and columnist Virginie Vandelac. “No matter the texture of your products, if you apply too much, it will accumulate in fine lines, making them more noticeable.” Exactly the opposite of what we’re looking for! Whether it’s foundation, concealer or blush, focus on products with moisturizing properties. For an even, radiant complexion, Vandelac suggests mixing a few drops of foundation into your moisturizer: “What we lose in coverage, we make up for in natural glow.” When applying colour to the face, avoid bronzers, which can create shadows that make you appear older; instead, opt for blushes that blend with your natural skin tone. Achieving a luminous visage also means taking care of your skin. Before applying foundation, make sure your skin is moisturized. “Proper hydration is key to a bright complexion,” says Vandelac. Since the skin tends to become drier as we age, it’s also important to exfoliate regularly, which helps remove dead skin cells to ensure your skin holds makeup better. And, unless you have very oily skin, mattifying products are not ideal.

ENVIABLE EYES Many of us are used to emphasizing the eye area with bold, black liner, but perhaps it’s time to consider something new. Maybe a simple thin line at the base of the lashes? “The wider the line, the smaller the eye appears,” says Vandelac. You can even skip the shadow, and let your natural skin shine through, she adds. If you choose to wear a shadow, stay away from chunky glitter or dull matte powders. There was a time when shimmery eyeshadows were avoided at all costs, but it’s no longer the case, says Montreal-based makeup artist Nathalie Dodon. “Today’s formulations have evolved—there are fine-textured, subtly pearlescent eyeshadows that are suitable for all ages.” Lighter, softer colours are preferable in shadow, liner and mascara—brown shades as opposed to black, for example. Sometimes a simple dash of khaki liner is all you need for a beautifully subtle effect. Opt for natural and luminous eyeshadows in variations of champagne, rose gold or silver. Lastly, avoid sharpening features by choosing a neutral shade for brows that isn’t too dark.

LUSCIOUS LIPS Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth where colour inevitably leaks is a challenge for any lipstick wearer. But there are precautions you can take to avoid this unsightly look. A waterproof lipliner, for example, can help create a barrier that prevents leakage. Dodon offers a tip to maximize the hold of lipstick: First, softly colour the entire lip using your lip pencil, then brush on a dash of transparent loose powder before applying lipstick. A lipstick or gloss packed with moisturizing ingredients to treat dry skin while also creating the appearance of plump lips is also effective. If you suffer from chapped lips in the colder seasons, choose a coloured lip balm. Darker shades are known to visually harden features, making you look severe, so try brighter or mid-strength hues such as pink, fuchsia or coral. Consider the colour of your teeth when choosing a shade as well, suggests Dodon. If you’ve got any yellow spots, avoid warm colours or purplish undertones. Cool shades tend to be more flattering and help to brighten your smile.

The concept of the beauty bar has come a long way in recent years. Cleansers, exfoliators and moisturizers for face and body, skin-care tonics and oils, massage bars, bath bombs, shampoos, conditioners and even toothpaste are all available in bar form. A benefit is that bars contain little or no water, and they don’t require plastic packaging. “With a little magic, innovation and expertise, products that typically come in liquid form can be formulated into solid alternatives,” says Erica Vega, brand and product expert at Lush Cosmetics, a brand that’s been selling solid products for decades.

Advantages of using solid products • Solid products tend to be more concentrated, which often means gets you more bang for your buck. • They don’t require bottles or jars, and their packaging is often cardboard, reducing their environmental footprint. • They’re practical for travelling, since there’s no risk of spillage and they weigh less. • They last as long as their liquid counterparts—and sometimes even longer. • Since they’re often formulated without water, they’re less vulnerable to bacterial growth. • It takes less energy to transport cosmetics in bars because they’re more compact and lighter than their liquid counterparts. Another good point for the environment!
Q How do you store and use solid products? Bars and cakes should be kept in a cool, dry place to preserve their longevity. “If you use them in the shower, it’s important to store them in a soap dish or other container that will allow them to drain,” says Vega. Also, be sure to keep solid moisturizers or other products created with oils or vegetable butters away from heat to prevent them from melting. Each formula is unique, so take the time to carefully read product instructions. “Some products, such as shampoos and conditioners, require water to activate them, while others, like facial oils and massage bars, go directly on the skin and melt a little upon contact,” says Vega. Since solid products tend to be more concentrated, a smaller amount than for a comparable liquid product may be used. “For example, a shampoo bar can be equivalent to more than two bottles of conventional shampoo; a few passes of solid shampoo on your hair is enough to wash it,” says Vega. Q Are solid products actually waterless? Solid beauty products don’t usually contain water, but it all depends on the formulas: “For example, a bar of soap or a solid facial cleanser might be formulated with a little water or an infusion of plants to mix the ingredients well, while a massage bar or facial oil will be waterless,” says Vega. If waterless, the natural butter (cocoa, shea or murumuru, for example) at the base of the product is responsible for its solid state.

Exfoliation is a crucial step in the skin-care regimen. Here’s how you can slough away dead skin properly. MECHANICAL OR CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION? “Mechanical, or physical, exfoliation requires lightly massaging abrasive particles on the skin with your fingertips to loosen dead cells and cleanse the skin,” explains Jade Reiner, international trainer at skin-care brand Laboratoires Filorga. “Chemical exfoliation is applied much like a mask, and contains fruit acids or enzymes that work by dissolving the bond between dead cells on the skin surface to remove them by peeling,” she says. Among these fruit acids, there are AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, which include lactic acid and glycolic acid, among others) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids, such as salicylic acid). “The end result is the same; the difference is that BHAs work not only on the surface of the skin, like AHAs, but are also employed in the deeper layers,” says Reiner.

So which route should you choose? Physical exfoliants are very effective on blackheads and dry areas, such as elbows, feet and knees, but are not always recommended for oily skin (friction can encourage overproduction of sebum) and very sensitive skin, which can easily become inflamed and damaged with friction. Chemical exfoliants are suitable for all skin types. If you’ve got sensitive skin, go for one with BHAs, which are generally milder than AHAs, and feature anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
FACT AND FRICTION Once or twice a week (or as indicated by the product guidelines), and after the cleansing step in your skin-care regimen, is the time to exfoliate your face and body. Why? Because this essential ritual allows you to uncover
soft, smooth and luminous skin. It unclogs the pores while removing dead cells and impurities which, when they accumulate on the surface of the skin, prevent it from properly oxygenating, and end up making your complexion dull. “I recommend gently exfoliating everywhere on the body—even on the chest—and preferably when the skin is wet. The exfoliation then becomes less abrasive,” says Myesha Polnett, aesthetician and global ambassador for Fenty Skin. “Exfoliation is also a good way to prepare the skin for moisturizer and sunscreen, which is a must when using any abrasion treatment.” In fact, chemical exfoliation, on the body in particular, tends to make the skin more sensitive to UV rays. What happens if you exfoliate too often, or too intensely? “Your skin is at risk of becoming more sensitive. Redness, itching and irritation can occur,” says Reiner. Therefore, it’s really important to scrub lightly with a mechanical exfoliant, and use chemical exfoliants sparingly.

Nov. 25 marks the 40th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It’s also the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, culminating in International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, violence against women and girls, and particularly domestic violence, has intensified in what the United Nations is calling a Shadow Pandemic. Here’s what you can do to help.
1. Start a conversation and speak out against gender-based violence. If possible, find safe ways to help when you see an act of violence. 2. Learn about sexual consent. It’s about communication and respecting a person’s boundaries— and requires an active, informed, ongoing and freely given “Yes!” from all those involved.
3. Donate to or volunteer with local organizations that are working to end violence and support survivors.

Think of your spending like it’s the tip of an iceberg—it’s the visible part. But your spending reflects your money values, which sit below the surface and are larger and much more important. We are all familiar with values like honesty, integrity, reliability, etc., but have you considered what your money values are? Money values are what you hold important. Do you value safety, security, freedom, giving back, comfort, adventure, and/or independence? Money values are also personal to you. You may value adventure but your partner values security. One person’s money values are not more important than another’s. You can have more than one money value operating at once. For example, you may value both security and adventure. Money values can change over time and
circumstances. Consider what was important to you when you were 21 years old. Are those things still as important now that you’re older? It’s common—and normal—for money values to shift when you’ve created a family of your own. And ¿QDOO\ \RXU PRQH\ YDOXHV VLJQL¿FDQWO\ LQÀX HQFH \RXU VSHQGing patterns. If you value safety and security, you’re more likely to put money aside for a rainy day. If you value adventure, you may put money aside for travelling. Perhaps you value charity and community development and put your funds toward organizations that focus on causes near and dear to you.

PART 2: Conscious Spending
HOW TO MAKE YOUR SPENDING CONSCIOUS AND ALIGNED WITH YOUR VALUES:
1 Identify your values. Here’s a fun exercise: imagine that you won the lottery. What would you do with the money? Would you take care of your family and friends (hint, there’s a money value here)? Some people would go back to school (the money value could be higher learning). Some people may start their own
business (the money value could be independence or creativity or something else). Some could put money into savings, ensuring their safety and security (money values). Some people would start their own charity (the money value could be charity and giving back). Once you identify what you would do with the money, ask yourself if your values are being met. Then list your top three money values.
2 Explore the importance and history of your values. For each value, ask yourself why it’s important to you? Then ask yourself, How did this money value come to be important to me? Did you have an experience as a child that shaped your value? One example is a child seeing their parent go bankrupt, perhaps due to a failed business. This child may grow up to be an adult who values safety and security. Another example could be someone who grows up with a lot of stuff but finds it stifling. They may value simplicity and minimalism. This is about being curious, so be gentle in making judgements about your past.

List your top three money values, and every time you make a purchase, ask yourself if your values are being met.
3 Identify how and when the value is being met. Ask yourself, How do I know when my (insert money value here) is EHLQJ VDWLV¿HG" ,I \RX value charity, you may be meeting your money value through donations or volunteering (remember, time is a resource, like money).
Perhaps you meet your value of a comfortable retirement by connectLQJ ZLWK \RXU ¿QDQFLDO planner and adhering to your plan. Or maybe you get a charge out of seeing your savings grow or planning your next scuba diving adventure. Consider, as a bonus, what it feels like when you are aligned to your money values—peace, happy, comfort?
Create an anchor to remind you of what’s important to you. This could be

An example could be that you value freedom, which looks like enough money in the bank to go anywhere you want at a moment’s notice. However, perhaps you’re also spending more money than you want on convenience items like ordering takeout multiple times a week. Once you’re more aware, you can ask yourself if the purchase you are about to make aligns with your money value. If it does, great! If it doesn’t, consider not making the purchase.

Sometimes we don't have enough hours in a day to accomplish everything we want to do. Having a routine allows you to set aside a certain amount of time to carry out those activities that are meaningful to you.
When our days are better organized, we’re less stressed because we’ve allotted time for the must-dos. You can also fall asleep peacefully without thinking about everything you need to accomplish the next morning for fear of forgetting something or running out of time.
By organizing our routine around tasks that are important to us, we can create healthier habits that correspond to our values. We may wish to have a better diet by preparing breakfast the day before, or get more exercise by taking a walk in the morning. This is a great opportunity to start fresh.
By having a routine, we waste less time getting organized and therefore have we can better handle anything unexpected that might turn up.

Move your muscles No need to run a marathon every morning. You can stretch, do a few yoga poses or jumping jacks or take a walk around the block. The idea is to warm up your muscles and speed up blood circulation in order to increase energy levels.

Raw, smoked or cured fish products can be contaminated with listeria. Older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to listeria infection. If this is a concern for you, consider eating fish and seafood that have been thoroughly heated to a core temperature of 160°F for at least two minutes.

THE BENEFITS Oh-so-good omega-3s
Health Canada recommends consuming two servings of non-fried fish a week (about 150 g total). Fish in general, and salmon, especially, is high in protein and provides an important source of healthy fatty acids and vitamin D. It’s also a good source of magnesium, which has a regulating effect on vitamin D—raising it in people with deficient levels and lowering it in people with high levels. What’s more? There is growing evidence that increased seafood intake—particularly where it replaces other protein sources, like beef or pork—is linked to a lower risk of coronary heart disease and fatal heart attack.
Our bodies don’t produce omega-3 fatty acids, so they must come from diet or supplements. Salmon and other fatty fishes are rich in two key omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). A recent meta-analysis of 40 clinical trials published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that DHA and EPA intake is associated with reduced risk of heart disease. But the benefits don’t stop there—EPA and DHA also play a role in brain function and normal growth and development. These long-chain fatty acids contribute to decreased inflammation, improved arterial function and protection against neurological and metabolic disease. You might benefit from taking a fish oil supplement, if you don’t eat fish or seafood, but it’s

always best to get nutrients straight from the source, which includes all of the salmon’s fats, vitamins, minerals and supporting molecules, not just EPA and DHA.
First-class carotenoid Like many foods that come in rich hues of red or orange, salmon is loaded with antioxidants, especially the carotenoid astaxanthin. This antioxidant may help improve the appearance of the skin by protecting against free radicals and increasing skin elasticity and hydration. Astaxanthin also works with salmon’s omega-3 fatty acids to protect the brain and nervous system against inflammation. It’s no surprise that the brightly coloured sockeye salmon provides the highest amount of this powerful antioxidant.

Bacteria and other microbes were once thought of as dangerous little bugs that caused infection; however, now we know that only a small number of them are actually pathogenic. Most microbiota present on or in the human body are symbiotic species that actually help us maintain, and even boost, our health. We talked to the experts to get the lowdown on your microbiome. Gut feeling The human microbiome encompasses all of the commensal microorganisms that inhabit your body. According to 'U .DWK\ 0F&R\ VFLHQWL¿F GLUHFWRU RI the International Microbiome Centre and professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Calgary, “Any part of the body that is exposed to the outside environment is going to have a microbial community that lives on it. That includes, of course, your digestive tract because, if you think about it, it’s actually an extension of the outside of the body, basically a tube that runs from your mouth to your anus.” The human microbiome also includes other mucosal and surface environments, such as the skin, eyes, mouth, nose, lungs and urinary genital system. The microbiome has a profound impact on the internal body. Our gut microbial communities help us digest food, regulate our immune system, LQÀXHQFH RXU PHWDEROLVP DQG SURWHFW against other bacteria that cause disease. Generally, the greater the species richness and diversity of a person’s microbiome, the healthier it is. “We want to be nice to our microbiota and take advantage of this mutualism,” says Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj, principal investigator of the Synergy in Microbiota Research program (SyMBIOTA) and professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. “What’s good for them is good for you.”
Mostly microbes As Walt Whitman so eloquently put it, “I am large, I contain multitudes.” He was right: The human body hosts trillions of individual bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microscopic organisms. These microbes account for at least half of the total number of cells in the human body. Genetically speaking, the body encodes some 20 thousand human genes, while the microbiome encodes more than two million! “You might say that we are half-human and half-microbial, and that’s not a bad thing. We have co-evolved with our microbes and found a way to live together in synergy. Together we are a superorganism,” explains Dr. McCoy. Humans are not born with a fully formed gut microbiome, but rather the microbial community develops over WKH ¿UVW \HDU RI DQ LQIDQW¶V OLIH XQGHUgoing substantial changes as the body learns to recognize bacterial friends and foes. The baby is initially colonized by oxygen tolerant (aerobic) microbiota, such as Proteobacteria (some of which can be pathogenic in adults), as well as more familiar species of Lactobacilli. Over time the concentrations of these types of microorganisms diminish and species of oxygen intolerant (anaerobic) bacteria—such as %L¿GREDFWHULD, %DFWHURLGHV and )LUPLFXWHV—take their place and become the typical constituents of the human microbiome. According to Dr. Kozyrskyj, “At about one year of age, your microbial community more or less resembles what it will be for the rest of your life. Some changes continue over the next couple of years, but by about three years of age, the major changes have been implemented in terms of your signature microbiome, resulting in what we might call a unique ¿QJHUSULQW RI PLFURELRWD WKDW LV \RXUV to keep for the rest of your life.”
Dr. McCoy likens the microbiome to a “forgotten organ,” explaining that “it has always been there, but it was ignored or thought to be unimportant in the past because it’s not technically in our bodies. But if you think of it as an organ, you can also think about what the organ needs to be healthy.” The microbiome works as a kind of interface between the external environment and the body, taking in information and relaying it to the immune system and other sites. “At the centre of the body is the gut microbiome and it has this amazing influence on areas that are very distal from it. Either by modulating immune cells or producing molecules and metabolites that impact various sites in the body,” says Dr. McCoy. The gut microbiome uses the food we eat to produce small molecules that are circulated and absorbed throughout the body. You may have heard of the gut-brain axis that allows for cross-communication between the gut and the brain… but it’s not the only one. Research is now focusing on how the gut microbiota and its products also communicate with the lungs, skin and vagina, for example. While live microbial communities are separated from the internal body through mucosal membranes, their products, these small molecules, are able to pass through and are critical to cross-communication between the gut microbiome and other organs in the body.

External factors
The dynamic and evolving process of microbial colonization begins at birth, DQG WKH ¿UVW H[SRVXUH JHQHUDOO\ FRPHV from the mother’s vaginal canal and gastrointestinal tract. Babies born by natural birth get a microbial boost from their mothers’ bodies that is not UHÀHFWHG LQ QHZERUQV GHOLYHUHG E\ &DHVDULDQ VHFWLRQ LQ SDUWLFXODU WKHUH is a substantial reduction in the group of microbes called Bacteroides. Breast milk is another important source of microbial goodness, such as %L¿GREDFteria, for developing infants. But that’s not all. Breast milk also contains oligosaccharides—a type of carbohydrate— WKDW WKH EDE\¶V ERG\ GRHVQ¶W XVH UDWKHU it is solely a source of nutrients for the developing community of microbiota. These initial microbial exposures set the stage for an infant’s development. “As the infant’s gut microbiota develops, so too does its immune system. The microbiome creates signals and educates the immune system so it does not overreact to friendly bacteria or foods that are good for the baby,” explains Dr. Kozyrskyj. While brain development begins in utero, there is likewise a connection between the microbiome and the ongoing development of a baby’s brain. Dr. Kozyrskyj states, “Bacteria such as Bacteroides are really important at one year of age in terms of brain development, due to the production of a group of sophisticated metabolites called sphingolipids, which are absorbed by the body and are connected to neural development.”
Because the microbiome inhabits areas of the body that are exposed to the outside world, there is a plethora of environmental determinants that can impact it both positively and negatively. Changes in the western lifestyle over the last 60 years have had a proIRXQG H̆HFW RQ WKH KXPDQ PLFURELRPH for example, increased antibiotic use and consumption of processed foods, urbanization and a separation from natural environments. “We’ve decreased the diversity and richness RI RXU PLFURELRPH DQG PRGL¿HG LWV composition,” says Dr. McCoy. An individual’s microbiome remains UHODWLYHO\ VWDEOH WKURXJKRXW OLIH KRZever, diversity tends to decrease as we age. Changes to your environment, stress, lack of sleep, medication and HYHQ LQIHFWLRQV DQG LQÀDPPDWLRQ FDQ all result in a decrease in microbial diversity. A course of antibiotics, major dietary changes and even vigorous cleansing of the skin can also have D VLJQL¿FDQW LPSDFW RQ WKH PLFURELDO community and temporarily alter it. In most cases, the microbiome can bounce back and the original composition of microbiota will return when the original conditions resume, but some microbes can be permanently lost.

Balancing act
One way to maintain microbial diversity in the gut is through diet; this is where pre- and probiotics come in. Prebiotics are substances, such as ¿EUH ZKLFK SURYLGH VXVWHQDQFH IRU the microbiota that live in the gut. Probiotics, on the other hand, are microbes that are thought to be bene¿FLDO IRU KHDOWK VXFK DV /DFWR EDFLOOXV and %L¿GREDFWHULXP—naturally occurring species that reside in the gut but may also be obtained by eating fermented foods. Making healthy food choices, such as whole foods, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables and incorporating live bacterial cultures found in fermented foods or probiotic supplements, can help produce an environment that encourages the growth of helpful bacteria. LikeZLVH DYRLGLQJ H[FHVV VXJDU DUWL¿FLDO sweeteners and processed foods is another way to support gut health. It’s not all about food—proximity to nature and spending time in green VSDFHV DOVR EHQH¿WV PLFURELDO GLYHUsity in both developing children and adults. For example, in a recent study, Dr. Kozyrskyj and her team found that living close to natural JUHHQ VSDFHV EHQH¿WV WKH EDFWHULDO diversity of formula-fed infants living in urban areas. “It’s exciting because it is an intervention for 100-percent formula-fed infants (who are at JUHDWHU ULVN IRU KHDOWK FRQVHTXHQFHV that could result in a gut microbiota that is more similar to breastfed infants,” says Dr. Kozyrskyj. What’s PRUH WKLV H̆HFW ZDV HVSHFLDOO\ SURnounced in those homes that had a pet dog. It has been known for some time that living with a pet is associated with a reduced risk of allergic disease but it’s now also understood WKDW GRJV VSHFL¿FDOO\ KHOS LQFUHDVH KXPDQ PLFURELDO GLYHUVLW\ $QG LW¶V not just microbes; dogs sometimes bring in trace elements and minerals, some of which are used as food by our microbiomes.
There is a strong suggestion that loss of microbial diversity is linked to various chronic diseases, from cancer to autoimmune and allergic diseases, as well as metabolic and neurological disorders. The state of imbalance in a person’s microbiome is called dysbiosis. It is often characterized as a change or reduction in the diversity of one’s microbial community that allows for the proliferation of opportunistic bacteria that can become pathogenic in certain conditions. &ORVWULGLXP GL̇FLOH & GL̆ LV RQH such opportunistic pathogen that basically takes over the gut microbial environment. It produces toxins and attacks the colon; in some cases, it can even be fatal. It has traditionally been treated with antibiotics; however, many individuals now KDUERXU DQWLELRWLF UHVLVWDQW & GL̆ Fortunately, microbiome research has made advancements in treatment and found a solution. Fecal PLFURELDO WUDQVSODQWDWLRQ )07 produces dramatic results and has revolutionized the treatment of & GL̆ $ WUDQVSODQW IURP D KHDOWK\ GRQRU H̆HFWLYHO\ FXUHV WKH LQIHFWLRQ by replacing the dysbiotic microbiome with a healthy, diverse one. GOLD Motel Makeover (a Netflix must-watch!) is a six-part series in which a shaggy old motel gets revamped into a beautifully updated space with a design that calls to its 1970s origins. We chatted with bestie duo April Brown and Sarah Sklash, moteliers and co-founders of The June Motel, along with Benjamin Moore colour pro Sharon Grech, about how to imbue a space with vintage vibes and bold hues. COLOUR CONFIDENTIAL This kitchen at The June Motel is bursting with colour, inspired by its Sauble Beach, Ont., location’s famous sunsets. The motel cofounders, April Brown and Sarah Sklash (who also own The June Motel in Ontario’s Prince Edward County), love leaning into feminine design, and for that, they say “You can’t beat a pink kitchen!” Interested in employing a monochromatic colour scheme in your own home? Sharon Grech, media spokesperson, Colour & Marketing Development at Benjamin Moore, advises mixing up the tones and adding a variety of textures. “The more contrast from light to dark, the more lively the room will feel. Painting lighter tones on the ceiling and upper portions of walls with darker shades below will bring balance to the space,” she says. April and Sarah wanted exactly that—to make the room colourful, but not overwhelming—and we say, “Mission accomplished!”
DETAILED DESIGN “We’re always looking to add some natural materials to our spaces, and we particularly like to use rattan light fixtures because of the interesting shadows they cast,” says the pair, who used a variety of organic fibres to add texture throughout the motel, along with hits of black to ground the aesthetic.

VINTAGE VIBES If you’re looking to achieve a retro yet modern feel, the moteliers recommend adding vintage pieces to your space— the square tile backsplashes in the kitchen and bathrooms are ’70s-inspired, and the original cabinetry and hardware were freshened up with paint. Likewise, the duo kept the natural wood ceiling in the motel shop to preserve its unique character. The colour scheme is carried throughout the motel. April and Sarah joke, “Every area in The June needs to have that touch of pink!”

Neon-light signs can be found throughout The June Motel. April and Sarah say, “Including neon makes any space more fun, retro and Instagram-worthy. Pink neon, in particular, casts such a flattering glow.” The neon signs in The June’s first location in Prince Edward County, Ont., were such a hit with their guests that the pair started selling them online.
April and Sarah always finish off a room’s decor with greenery: “Not only do plants add a little pop of colour, but they also add a sculptural effect and visual interest. There’s always a way to squeeze in greenery, whether it’s a tall skinny palm in a corner, a small succulent in a vintage pot on a table or a trailing fern in a basket hanging from the ceiling.”
