WHEN I SAW Andie MacDowell walking toward me at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel in California, her signature corkscrew curls bouncing, I felt faint. Such is the effect of the stunning 57-year-old L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel and actor (who was unforgettable in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral and will appear in the upcoming film Magic Mike XXL). You’ve been a L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel for 30 years. How has the industry changed during that time? We’ve adjusted our ideas of what we see as beautiful. I’ve seen wonderful changes for women and the empowerment of women. We can still improve, but we’ve made great strides.

You live in Montana. What’s your style sense at home? I don’t think about style in Montana; I put conditioner on my hair and go hiking. When I go into town for a yoga class, people aren’t fashion-conscious; they buy used clothes and put them together in an artsy way. They’re not into money, either, which is why I like living there. There isn’t an attachment to things. It’s more about enjoying life. How have you adapted your beauty routine over the years? You lose your eyebrows as you get older. When I was young, I didn’t have to think about it because I had huge, thick eyebrows. Now, I don’t go anywhere without filling them in. You get a little bluer, a little thinner around your eyes, so I use concealer and a little blush. I do those few things, but I don’t have anxiety over it. How do you handle aging in an image-obsessed industry? I don’t like the word “accepting”; I think “embracing” is better. I love when a tree is teeny-tiny, and I love when a tree is big and strong. They’re both beautiful—just different.
