Fresh Starts is our main coverline this issue because—despite what calendar makers, astrology books and organizing articles tell us—we all know that September is really the month that means renewal, refreshment and reinvention. Perhaps it harks back to our school days, when pristine notebooks, crayons and, potentially, a bedazzled pencil case marked the onset of a season full of possibilities. Add to that a roster of new classmates and the unveiling of the latest fall fashions and we had an opportunity presented to us every year to become a whole new version of ourselves. That sense of beginning anew at this time of year is no less impactful in the later stages of our lives. We still feel a (sometimes) subtle nudge during the last days of August that stirs us into looking past Labour Day toward a revved up autumn. 2 Day Tripping to Lamma Island While known for its cityscape, Hong Kong is also home to plenty of verdant outdoor excursions. A day trip to Lamma Island, off the southwest coast of Hong Kong Island, is a must to experience a more relaxed side of life here. Take the 40-minute ferry ride and, upon exiting, wander around Yung Shu Wan, a colourful fishing village with restaurants that offer the freshest seafood. Secrets From a Makeup Artist Jodi Urichuk, L’Oréal Paris Canada makeup artist and expert, shares her tips for achieving fuller, eyeopening lashes.
PREP MODE “A lash primer acts the same way as a foundation primer does,” says Urichuk. To get the best results, apply the primer, then mascara right after, one eye at a time. Urichuk recommends applying two coats of the primer if you want a really voluminous effect.

Even though oily and combination skin types are at greater risk for enlarged pores, dry, dehydrated skin can have the same issue. Factors like pollution, heat and hormonal changes can also add to this problem. To find out where your skin falls on the spectrum (and pick the treatment that’s right for you), don’t hesitate to contact a specialist.
Whether your skin looks perfect or not on any particular day, moisturizing is very important. And so is using the right product: Choose a light formula that’s noncomedogenic (doesn’t clog pores) with a water or argan oil base and avoid using products that are formulated with petrolatum, a substance known to clog pores. Purifying clay or charcoal masks can come to the rescue for your pores. Try one application a week, concentrating on the parts of the face that need the most attention, such as the T-zone.

Commit to a regular cleansing routine. Morning and night, wash your skin with a cleanser to eliminate impurities. When choosing which product to use, forget about the ones that dry out your skin, and opt for a cleansing lotion with a light astringent to help tighten your pores. In the same school of thought, exfoliate without irritating the skin by choosing non-abrasive products like at-home peels, and only use them one or two times a week.

Always, always wear sunscreen. Regular UV ray exposure can harm the skin’s collagen and elastin, exacerbating the dilation of the pores. To avoid any further damage, apply a non-oily sunscreen specifically made for the face’s delicate skin.
PRO TRICKS Certain active ingredients work really well to tighten pores, notably retinol, which helps refine the skin’s texture. But be careful as products containing these ingredients aren’t always good for sensitive skin, and should be avoided during pregnancy. It’s always best to ask a dermatologist about the best options. If you want to permanently eliminate enlarged pores, ask your doctor about laser treatments.

How sheet masks work
Facial sheet masks are paper-like cutouts most often made of bio cellulose, hydrogel or cotton and are infused with active ingredients that, when applied, absorb into your skin. The mask acts as a barrier to the elements, which allows its skin-saving compounds to deeply penetrate the dermis.
How to use sheet masks
Thanks to a paper-thin, pre-cut format, these masks are easy to apply and remove. Simply take the mask out of its packaging and unfold it to reveal the shape of a face. Place the mask over your clean skin, adjusting and smoothing to make sure it stays on. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes (or the time recommended on the mask’s instructions). Gently remove the mask and massage any surplus residue into the skin—no need to rinse! Do this one or two times a week to achieve healthy glowing skin.

PRECAUTIONS BEFORE USE Before integrating essential oils into your beauty routine, here are some questions to ask.
Does the essential oil have to be pure? It’s a mark of quality, so it’s important to read the full list of ingredients to know exactly what you’re using. Some oils, such as pure lavender, are often diluted with another oil or synthetic materials. In those cases, say hello to allergies and adverse reactions or reduced efficacy!

In theory, it would be great to live in an uncluttered, minimal space worthy of a design magazine. But—sorry Marie Kondo—in reality, our houses more often look like a category 5 tornado just blew through. “In terms of organization, paperwork is the crux of the problem,” says Mylène Houle Morency, a member of Professional Organizers in Canada. “If you don’t have a good system in place, all those papers will quickly take over.” In the entryway console, all over the kitchen island, on the dining room table…Any horizontal surface can become your random bits and bobs’ new resting place. The good news? Even if no one in your family has a particular penchant for paper management, we’re here to help you learn how to take control of your filing situation with a few smart solutions and the proper tools.
1 THE FAMILY BINDER WHAT: An inch-and-a-halfwide binder, with dividers, that stays in the kitchen, where it’s visible but out of the way. WHY: To keep information that might be needed on a daily, weekly or monthly basis so that it’s handy for everyone to access. Adapt this binder for the specific needs of your family and do a cleanup once or twice a year, such as right before school starts. Include the following: Quick references. Birthday party invitations, restaurant takeout menus, emergency contacts, Wi-Fi codes and important passwords.

Grocery lists. What’s for dinner? The age-old question gets sorted. Keep track of what you ate last week, grocery lists, family favourites, new recipes to try, things you need to buy. School. 2 THE MURAL SYSTEM WHAT: A file folder with pockets that can attach to the wall. WHY: To find important things easily. Each week, set an alarm on your phone to remind you to deal with everything. This way you’ll avoid unpaid bills or important documents getting misplaced all over the house.
3 THE COMMAND CENTRE WHAT: A whole wall or section of a wall with push pins and cork, a dry-erase board or chalkboard paint that becomes the epicentre of household information. WHY: To mark important dates on a paper calendar, write down the week’s events with chalk or create visual reminders and list things to do. You can even add animated notes.

Think pimples are just a teenage complexion problem? Well, there’s a wrinkle in that theory: adult-onset acne is a real thing. “By some estimates, as many as 20 to 30 percent of women over 40 struggle with acne,” says Dr. Jennifer Beecker, dermatologist at The Ottawa Hospital and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa. This means that many women in mid-life are WU\LQJ WR ZDUG R̆ ¿QH OLQHV and beat breakouts, which can be as confusing as it is frustrating.

Women with acne in their 40s and 50s often see the bulk of their break outs along the jawline. It’s an area of the face where men grow beards, and testosterone in that spot is naturally KLJKHU LQ ZRPHQ WRR VR H[FHVV RLO LV SURGXFHG ³%XW women don’t have that thick hair in the pore to wick away the oil. “It was during a family trip to the Cayman Islands when I noticed that after walking for a few minutes, my right foot would drop. Basically, it would lose strength and instead of transitioning from heel to toe when I took a step, it would flop flat on the ground,” says Toronto-based editor Hina P. Ansari, who quickly dismissed this strange occurrence as a side effect of being out of shape. But after casually mentioning it to her father, a surgeon, Ansari ended up seeing a neurologist, who immediately referred her to a specialist.

This was back in 2010. While Ansari waited for her specialist appointment, she spent months visiting other doctors trying to get a diagnosis. “They found a cyst on my spine but couldn’t conclude it was causing the immobility. As the months progressed, I got worse. I was losing my balance and falling a lot, plus I had nerve pain,” she says. By the time she met with the neuropathy VSHFLDOLVW VKH VD\V VKH IHOW GHÀDWHG ³, UHDOO\ didn’t think this examination would be any GL̆HUHQW WKDQ WKH RQHV ,¶G KDG ZLWK RWKHU doctors. However, he did repeated nerve tests and after that it was explained to me that I have multiple sclerosis (MS).” It turns out Ansari had been living asymptomatically for years, and MS was the culprit behind her recent constant pain and numbness. Ansari, now 49, remembers receiving the diagnosis, and says she was matterof-fact about it at the time, almost void of emotion. “I wanted to know next steps. , ¿OOHG P\ FDOHQGDU ZLWK P\ULDG GRFWRUV¶ appointments and treated them the same way I would a business meeting—what’s the problem, how do we solve it. It was a couple of months later when all the emotions I had bottled up came out and I just cried for days.” That’s when she says she GHFLGHG WR JHW KHU D̆DLUV LQ RUGHU JHW DV

Dr. Madeline Li is a psychiatrist in the department of supportive care at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. She says there are a ton of common feelings people have when they receive a diagnosis—as many feelings as are there are diagnoses. “Feelings can range from shock, sadness, anger and guilt to sometimes even relief, if they’ve gone through a long period of unexplained symptoms and tests. Worry about the impact on their family and life course and goals, fears about treatment DQG VX̆HULQJ H[LVWHQWLDO GLVWUHVV DERXW changes to their identity as a ‘healthy person,’ as well as the possibility of dying are common,” she says. The other thing that’s shared when it comes to receiving such a diagnosis is that there isn’t a RQH VL]H ¿WV all solution. “All coping styles are healthy so long as they work,” Dr. Li adds. Avoid the “tyranny of optimism. ” Dr. Li says it’s common for you and others to focus only on the positive, and believe that you will get back to normal. “Illness changes you. Expect that there will be change and focus on adapting to your “new normal” instead.”
Be present. Live well and more fully now, says Dr. Li. “Facing a life-changing illness and not knowing what the future holds can motivate some people to appreciate life more, repair relationships, engage in more meaningful activities and reprioritize the work/life balance.” She adds that adopting a “stay-in-the-present” way of WKLQNLQJ FDQ UHDOO\ EH EHQH¿FLDO ³)RU H[DPSOH LI D SDWLHQW ZKR KDV ¿QLVKHG cancer treatment is afraid of a recurrence, focusing on the fact that right now, in this moment, we know there is no cancer can help the patient move forward. Live more fully in the present so whatever happens in the future you’ll have enjoyed life and may have fewer regrets.” Consider mindfulness-
based stress reduction (a kind of meditation that helps you deal with your thoughts and stay present) to help hone this skill. Ansari says a piece of major advice she took to heart was to try not to stress over what she couldn’t control. “It was challenging for my Type A personality, but I did my best to focus on what I have instead of what I am losing, and tried to pick my battles so that I could take that energy and redirect it to myself, to living in the moment and enjoying life as best I can.”
Share your feelings. “MS is seen as an invisible disease because, in the beginning, you don’t look sick from the outside. However, inside, you’re pretty much falling apart,” Ansari says. “I had to explain to people who weren’t familiar with the disease that just because I don’t always walk with a cane (I do intermittently) it doesn’t mean that I can run (I can’t) and walk and climb stairs quickly ( I FDQ¶W ´ 6KH DOVR IRXQG LW GL̇FXOW WR talk to people who immediately felt as though her diagnosis was a death sentence. “A dark cloud would hover over us when we talked about it, and I needed to snap out of it (and have them snap out of it). I tried to be positive and open to questions and concerns, and focus on all that I have, although sometimes it’s healthy to walk away from negativity, too, and limit your interactions with people who have a more negative outlook. It was important to me to let people know that even though I have limitations, I’m still able to do certain things. I’ll be okay.”

Do what’s best for you. It goes without saying that once a diagnosis becomes public knowledge, input from others will come pouring in. “Just understand that those who are giving it are doing so with the best intentions,” says Ansari. However, only you know what’s best for you; only you know what it feels like to live with this challenge. Only you will know best how to continue to live, day in and day out.”

1 Cut a 1-foot length of twine; wrap it around one end of the cord to prevent it from fraying. Knot the twine to secure; trim the remainder.

the twine-wrapped end of the cord into a disc, applying a thin strip of hot glue on the inner side as you go. Continue coiling and gluing until the base is as wide as the bottom of the bucket.
3 Place the bucket on top of the cord base
(to serve as a guide to form the basket’s shape). Working from the bottom up, wrap the cord around the bucket, gluing each new layer to the previous one as you go. Put your imagination to work when thinking about your decorating project. Inspiration can come from anywhere—from magazines to nature walks—and it’s easy to corral your ideas with sites like Pinterest. Start by collecting images and creating a strong theme that speaks to you.

Every aesthetic has its own signature elements, so when you’ve assembled your inspiration board, take a look for any commonalities. Is everything yellow? Are all the shapes feminine? Maybe there’s a lot of traditional woods and patterns. Use any similarities to zero in on the look you like. Just remember to remain flexible. Design projects always— always—involve compromise.

5 Pick Your Palette
Designers often advise using a palette made up of three shades in varied proportions: the main colour that would go on the walls (60%), a contrasting colour to accentuate a feature (30%) and a complementary or highlighting colour for accents (10%).

Canadians are drawn to whites and pale neutrals, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, but these light shades are not all created equal. To get it right, think about the existing light in the room; if any windows are north-facing, for example, chances are the light is cool, so a white with a blue undertone will work. Spaces with warm light can benefit from a white with a yellow undertone.
Charcoal, ebony, chocolate, ink, midnight—luscious dark colours can make a room feel luxurious and dramatic and, contrary to popular belief, they don’t make a space feel smaller. The key to using a bold shade is to start small (in a powder room, perhaps), and not overdo it. Dark rooms can seem quite formal, so incorporate layers of natural textures to lighten things up.

Various subjects, a rainbow of colours, different frames—or no frames at all—are all okay to highlight the items that are meaningful to you.
Love a fabric but reupholstering your old sofa isn’t in the budget? Purchase just a small piece and make a toss cushion instead. Utilizing fabrics and organic fibres is a great option to add interest to a room without breaking the bank. Monochromatic and neutral rooms, especially, need subtle layers of textures and patterns to add interest and keep the eye moving. It’s important not to obstruct the ventilation ducts inside the fridge, otherwise the appliance will have to work harder to bring the temperature down and circulate cool air. Before opening the fridge, think about what you want, as the longer the door is open, the more humid air enters and more cool air is lost. Maintenance: The condenser coils on most newer refrigerators are located on the bottom rather than the back, like on ROGHU PRGHOV ,W¶V UHFRPPHQGHG WR FOHDQ WKH ÀRRU DUHD RI DOO dust and debris, and vacuum the grill element at least once a year. If you own a pet, do this cleaning routine every four months, as animal hair is attracted to the appliance’s ventilation system.
