M
eet Otis (right). Likes: Chaos. Dislikes: Any semblance of obedience. My family adopted this 70-pound puppy shortly after Bailey, our beloved lab-chow mix of 11 years, passed away late last year. I’ll admit we moved on too fast, but Otis needed a new home and we had one to offer. It was soon evident we were in way over our heads, with a chew-happy dog that considered our home one all-you-can-eat buffet. It took some time—and some training (pet and human alike)—to restore a little order, but I’m happy to say that Otis is now a very good-ish boy. (Although I’ll admit getting him to jump up for this photo went against everything we have taught him.) This issue is about the unique beauty of second chances—of leaps of faith and labors of love—and seeing hidden potential in everything from rambunctious rescues to farmhouse fixer-uppers. When things don’t come easy, when you’re forced to put in the work, you develop a surprisingly symbiotic relationship where all involved—be it hounds, humans, or houses—turn out for the better. When Steve Ballerini and Colin Bohrer first laid eyes on their 18th-century home in Provincetown, Massachusetts (pg. 66), they were undoubtedly daunted—just look at their “before” photos! But that only made for a more rewarding end result. The same goes for Peter and Elizabeth Georgantas, who also found themselves restored while bringing their centuries-old Nantucket cottage back to life. I believe

that when you pour your heart into an old house, it loves you in return. If you’re a Country Living reader, chances are you already have a soft spot for the dilapidated or discarded, but I hope these pages leave you feeling inspired to take on a spring “rescue” project of your own, whether it’s repurposing old corbels (pg. 28), embracing antique hardware (pg. 23), or reviving an outdated kitchen (pg. 14). Here’s to not taking the easy route—to seeing the beauty not just in the result, but in the process that gets you there. Because there’s love to be found in the labor, and don’t we all just want our own special place to sit and stay?

here’s a certain preciousness that can come with a new or newly renovated kitchen. Stainless steel shows smudges. White cabinets show fingerprints. Marble countertops show everything. But anchoring a room with an antique island—one so scuffed and scratched up that a nick is hardly noticeable—sets a tone that wear-and-tear is not only inevitable, but it’s something to be desired. Just as handwritten notes and grease stains can transform a plain recipe card into a precious heirloom, a worn-in work table gives a kitchen a happy helping of soul and substance. You can’t help but think about the previous generations that have rolled out dough, chopped meat, sliced tomatoes, or cooled casseroles on the very same surface, and surely all of those centuries of “seasoning” will infuse your dishes with more flavor. Here’s to bypassing the builder-grade in the name of the beautifully gritty, ensuring that even the most shiny and new of cook spaces will feel, quite fittingly, centered.

Object Lesson Clean Start: Originating in Holland in the 1700s, the claw- or ball-foot tub became popular with the European elite as Victorian-era bathing rituals took off. The style bubbled up stateside shortly thereafter, finding its way to the mainstream during the early 20th century, thanks to the proliferation of mail-order furnishings available through publications like the Sears catalog. Country Cred: Given their oval, trough-like silhouette, claw-foot tubs have always had a certain country flair. When Wisconsinbased Kohler Co. (us.kohler.com) first advertised one in 1883, the company called it a “water trough” and sold it alongside farm equipment.

Weighing Options: Purists prefer cast iron over modern materials like acrylic and fiberglass. Not only is it more durable, but it also keeps bathwater warmer longer. Unfortunately, such tubs are notoriously heavy (up to 500 pounds when empty!), and some older floors aren’t up to the task of carrying that weight.

Salvaged Soakers: Slight cosmetic upgrades to vintage tubs like tackling rust stains can easily be accomplished with a good rust remover. For DIY exterior paint jobs, an exterior-grade paint in a satin finish is preferred, and be sure to seal with an anti-rust clear coat before use. If your tub needs a complete overhaul, though, seek out established refinishers, such as Miracle Method (miraclemethod .com), who can handle the job of reglazing. Makers to Know: Brands like Kohler have been producing claw-foot tubs for more than a century, but seasoned pickers seek out long-gone brands that flourished during the soakers’ heyday, such as Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Co., L. Wolff Manufacturing Co., and J. L. Mott Iron Works. Company logos can often be found on the bottom of the tub and used to confirm authenticity. Start your hunt at the local architectural salvage yard before heading online to sources such as eBay or Etsy.

Bring It Home Go Old... Swapping in new-old feet is an easy way to upgrade a salvaged tub. Expect to pay from $100 to $200 for a set of four from trusted dealers. Go with the more ornate style known as ball-and-claw—so dubbed for the appearance of a bird talon gripping a small ball—from dealers such as (1, 6) Patina Rust and Bling (patinarust andbling.etsy.com) and (4) The Painted Primitive (thepaintedprimitive .etsy.com). Statement Island Alison teamed up with Unique Kitchens and Baths cabinet designer Tanya Smith-Shiflett to build an ultra-functional island, which stores the microwave, small appliances, and cookware. The inset panels and striking blue hue (for similar, try Endless Sea by Sherwin-Williams) give the island a furniture-like feel, as does the polished marble top with a delicate ogee edge.

Bistro Backsplash Four-inch-square white ceramic tiles with contrasting dark grout set the bistro-style scene. The glass-front—and backless!—upper cabinets showcase the backsplash, as well as pretty dishware. Knock, Knock As the first impression of the home, door knockers do double-duty in alerting those inside to visiting guests and setting a decorative tone. While intricate styles have long been the norm—the ball and hand (bottom, left of center) has design roots in Mesopotamia—the familiarfeeling anchor and eagle didn’t become widespread until the 1910s and ’20s. More playful shapes (roosters, tennis rackets) date post World War II. Look for seaming to evaluate age— if you can see how a knocker was made, it’s likely younger in years—and expect to spend between $40 to $250 each.

Turn Style In the Golden Age of their creation, the most elaborate bronze and brass knobs were made using compression casting, a process that involves pressing metal into molds. They featured prominently on public buildings, hence the availability of pieces emblazoned with state and city names. Changing safety regulations in the 1970s saw many intricate knobs replaced with push plates. Today, they typically fetch between $50 and $200 a set. Glass, wood, and porcelain knobs were more commonly used in private residences and run $10 to $40.

Put a Ring on It With the invention of the electric doorbell in 1831 came the need to protect the area surrounding the push button. (Before this, most doorbell systems worked via pulley or twist knob.) Protective metal plates, or escutcheons, in primarily round shapes were known as rosettes. Pieces tied to a distinctive style such as Eastlake (with rectangular backplate, top right) can fetch up to $200, while simpler unembellished circles can be had for $10 to $30.

Keeping Count Because number pieces were often made from porcelain (center ‘22’ and ‘6’ at left)— and therefore weren’t regularly offered by the metal-focused manufacturers hardware enthusiasts typically hunt for—less is known about their history. But that doesn’t make them any less fun to search for! Casual antiquers can hunt for their lucky number or birth year, while more serious collectors typically seek out full sets of 0 through 9. Either way, individual pieces can be found for a steal, usually between $5 and $15.

As is the case with most antique hardware, hinges made between roughly 1870 and 1910 and by certain well-regarded manufacturers (look for M.C.C.C., Russell & Erwin, Yale & Towne, Mallory, Wheeler & Co., and Hopkins & Dickinson) are most desired by collectors. They generally
can be purchased for between $50 and $125 each, with finial styles including steeple (right) and ball tip (left). To distinguish a front door hinge from its interior counterpart, check for weight and wear: The former will be heavier and likely harder to bend due to more regular use.

So What Are Corbels, Exactly? Derived from the Latin word corbellus, meaning raven (a nod to the millwork’s beak-like appearance), a corbel is a type of decorative bracket made of wood, stone, or metal. Designs can range from the very intricate—think carved animals or flowers or the fanciful gingerbread-style designs on Victorian homes— to the more simple and geometric squared-wood pieces seen on Craftsman-style houses. Historically, corbels projected out from a wall to support the weight of an above structure, such as a porch overhang, but in modern settings they are typically just decorative. Find wood examples like those here at architectural salvage yards.

Bookends No tools or supplies are required for these petite bookends! Simply buy a matching pair of small corbels (these are 10 inches high) and place on a bookshelf with your favorite titles sandwiched in between.
Hanging Candelabra Using wood glue, attach four matching corbels to a square piece of wood that’s the same width and height as the corbels. Top with a dowel cap and C hook for hanging. Nail metal doorknob rosettes atop each arm to hold the candles.

Mailbox Post Create a one-of-a-kind post by attaching a large corbel (about 18 inches long to support a standard-size mailbox) to a newel post with wood glue and long screws. Mount the mailbox as instructed.
Kitchen Shelf Opt for more fanciful cutout corbels to add vintage charm to your kitchen. If the corbels don’t already have openings to accept a copper pipe rod, use an auger drill bit to create holes. Top with a 1-inchthick wood board of the desired length.
Curtain Rod Brackets In place of store-bought metal brackets, use a pair of chippy painted corbels to give your room a touch of country-style patina. Use an auger drill bit to create holes in the facing bracket sides to hold the curtain rod.

American Encaustic Tiling Co.’s Tiles WHAT TO KNOW: While founded in 1875 in New York City, it was the 1892 opening of American Encaustic Tiling Co.’s factory in Zanesville, Ohio, that really put them on the map. Ranging from dust-pressed floor tiles and solid utilitarian wall tiles to a wide variety of decorative mosaic inlaid and glazed embossed art tiles, their designs rivaled those of English companies. By 1890 they were the largest tile manufacturer in the U.S., with additional factories in New Jersey and California. (Fun fact: Among their notable craftsmen was Frederick Hurten Rhead, the future creator of Fiestaware.) The Zanesville factory thrived until closing in 1935, later reemerging in 1937 under a new name, Shawnee Pottery.

“I purchased this unusual piece several years ago at an antiques shop in Clovis, California.” —L.C., Porterville, CA WHAT IT IS:
Ca.-1880s Washstand Antiques Roadshow Executive Producer Marsha Bemko shared your piece with appraiser Amanda Everard of Everard Auctions and Appraisals, who tells us it is a ca.-1880s American Eastlake walnut washstand cabinet. “Usually these have a marble top on which to place a bowl and water pitcher for washing your face, etc., because most households did not have running water at that time. Yours, though, would have been custom made for the family,” says Amanda. The top of the stand has a metal ball on the underside of the left rear corner that allows it to rotate and expose the sink below, while the upper
cabinet next to the mirror houses a metal cistern to hold water, plus a drop-down brass faucet. There would also have been some sort of receptacle in the cabinet below the sink that would need to be manually emptied daily. “This setup would have been quite ‘high-tech’ at the time and impressive to guests,” says Amanda. She adds that the market for this type of late-19th-century furniture is soft at the moment, but having all the inner workings doubles your washstand’s value. WHAT IT’S WORTH:

Early-20th-Century Hoosier Cabinet “The ‘Hoosier’ cabinet design was originally produced in 1898 by the Sellers Furniture Co. of Elwood, Indiana, but it was the maker of your cabinet, the—also Indiana-based—Hoosier Mfg. Company, that likely gave the iconic cabinet style its official name,” says appraiser Marsha Dixey of Heritage Auctions. Kitchens in the 19th century had very little storage or work space, and the tricked-out Hoosier cabinet afforded home cooks both, including tin-lined drawers for dry goods storage and hangers for pots and pans. “The design was so popular that half a dozen different furniture makers in Indiana—nicknamed the Hoosier state— were selling similar styles,” says Marsha. At one time the Hoosier Mfg. Company was churning out 700 cabinets a day, but by 1930 the beloved Hoosier was being replaced by built-in cabinetry. WHAT IT’S WORTH:

On the menu: turkey chili served atop a DIY buffet composed of sawhorses topped with plywood—one of Lela’s goto party shortcuts, given its easy assembly. Justin is the only weaver in the country still creating figured Jacquard coverlets— lightweight bedcovers with detailed motifs. One blanket takes at least six days to produce.
I
t’s March in Newbury, Vermont, and at the Burroughs-Hebb-McClintock Farm, weaver Justin Squizzero keeps an ear out for the phone as he works. “It’s maple sugaring season,” he explains, “so I’m always ready to help out when friends call to say the weather has turned right for tapping.” Country traditions like this are what led Justin, an old-souled Rhode Island native, to fall for Vermont. Introduced to textile making by his grandmother in his teens, he originally moved to the Green Mountain State to apprentice under Kate Smith and Norman Kennedy of the Marshfield School of Weaving. (Justin now teaches there, too.) While house hunting in 2015, he came upon the rambling 1810 farmstead that would become his home and studio. “Having been owned by just two families, it was largely untouched,” he says. “I loved it just as it was.” Justin began producing his own textiles in 2017, under company name The Burroughs Garret. (“Garret” refers to the small room tucked under the farmhouse’s roof where he often works.) Woven on centuries-old hand looms, his intricate pieces are either reproductions of or inspired by historic designs, with a focus on the popular figured coverlet style of the 19th century. As for farm work, Justin shares duties with his husband, Andrew, tending to Border Leicester sheep, Berkshire hogs, Jersey cattle, and heirloom poultry. “There are plenty of chores,” he says. “But the flexibility and freedom of this life, to roll with whatever needs doing, is hard to beat.”

Within These Walls A raucous scurry of squirrels reminds writer Kristin van Ogtrop that even our most private spaces are seldom ours alone.
F
rom the moment my husband and I moved into our drafty old Victorian, we knew the squirrels were there. They dug up my tulip bulbs, hid acorns in my planters, and, occasionally, would stand on the roof, right outside a window, and glare, tails twitching in a defiant Morse code. But it was the noises (sporadic, unpredictable) that made our furry roommates impossible to ignore. At certain times of year on the squirrel calendar, they also held after-hours ragers in one of our walls, with chirping and scratching and a galloping dance that—to the confusion of dinner guests and annoyance of teenage boys trying to sleep—stretched from the front of the house to the back. For more than a decade, we tolerated those squirrels. Perhaps we’re a little slipshod in our home maintenance, but we’re also peaceable sorts who support interspecies coexistence. Just because we had enough human money to pay a human mortgage didn’t give us any more right to be there than the squirrels. Plus, there was a strange excitement in not knowing when the squirrels would

COUNTRYLIVING.COM / MARCH 2022
act up, or when they would stop. It added a frisson of transgression to our otherwise rule-abiding human lives. But then we had to replace the roof. And, as anyone who lives in an old house knows, when you endeavor to fix one thing, there will be 12 other things that need fixing first. That led to the discovery of the squirrel-sized hole in our roof soffit, which led, inevitably, to Chuck: the wildlife control expert who, with great care, a rectangular cage, and a handful of unshelled peanuts, gently relocated the eight rowdy critters who also called our house home. Our walls are now silent. (This, I imagine, is how humans are supposed to live.) But I miss the wild-kingdomness of our furry roommates and their nocturnal carousing. They got here first, and they will still be here when we leave. Now when I see a squirrel standing on the roof, I want to send my own Morse code. I know, I would say. Timber Beams A rustic timber ceiling beam and reclaimed heart-pine floorboards make for a warm and inviting dining room. The fireplace’s Federal-style mantel was reconstructed to mirror the one in the living room. Hand-printed wallcoverings by Printsburgh Wallpapers (printsburgh.com) lend a cozy layer and break up the expanses of painted walls. The writing desk once belonged to Provincetown artist William Maynard, who had lived in the house in front of Steve and Colin’s cottage.

ometimes fate intervenes in not-so-subtle ways. Such is the case of a humble Cape Cod cottage that seemingly found its life preserver in the couple who happened by on a summer’s day a few years ago. Steve Ballerini, who works as a marketing executive in Silicon Valley, says the blooming hydrangeas caught his attention when he snapped a photo of his husband, Colin Bohrer, and their pup, Henry, in front of the house. “This little house would do just fine,” Steve wrote on the accompanying Instagram post. A few hours later, they heard from a friend who informed them that the house had just gone on the market that day. “What are the odds?” says Colin, an animation filmmaker at Pixar. “We live 3,000 miles away, and during the two weeks we’re in town, that house gets listed.” Steve and Colin, who live in San Francisco and had pondered buying a home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, made an offer the next day. (The house now makes regular Instagram appearances on their account @thegroggyanchor.) Originally built by a ship’s carpenter during the late 1700s, the Federalstyle cottage was a charmer—located a stone’s throw from the shore in the oldest part of town, right across the
street from where the couple had rented rooms while vacationing there the past 20 years. Inside, however, the house was showing its age with patched-over floors covered in linoleum and crumbling plaster walls. They also discovered the dining room’s foundation was teetering on tree stumps sunk into the sand. The house needed a rescue, but the couple wanted to thoughtfully maintain its spirit, so Steve and Colin embarked on a two-year restoration, bringing the cottage back to life one heart-pine board and brass light at a time. One of their most prized pieces is the heirloom Salem Bridge shelf clock they received as a housewarming gift from the couple who sold them the house. “I think I cried,” Steve recalls of the gesture. “You did,” Colin quickly agrees.

A fresh coat of paint on the floors (Stiffkey Blue by Farrow & Ball) brightens the landing, while the vintage ship painting (thejm byronhouse.com) and clam basket of shells reference the seaside locale.

Shipwreck Salvage In what was known as the keeping room, the original cooking fireplace with a beehive oven is the focal point. Other architectural details were also still intact, such as the wainscoting and the built-in cabinet next to the fireplace, which now look bright and fresh coated in crisp white (Linen White by Benjamin Moore). “Supposedly, a lot of our house was built from wood salvaged from shipwrecks because lumber became rare,” says Steve. They furnished the room with a “gentlemen’s club vibe” using an antique Afghan Soumak rug and cozy leather furniture found for a song on Facebook Marketplace.

Horizontal plank walls and handcrafted unlacquered brass and rope pendants (nausetlanternshop.com) further the nautical vibe.
Nautical Signal Flags “We wanted to make this space feel like you’re sleeping in the cabin of a boat,” Steve says of the home’s primary bedroom tucked into the eaves upstairs. They painted the original floorboards a moody blue and strung a rope of signal flags found at the John Derian Company’s P-town outpost. To shore up space, Steve’s brother, Peter Ballerini, built stowaway drawers into one wall.

Varied-Width Floorboards Steve and Colin turned the former parlor on the main level into a guest bedroom. After removing the floor’s linoleum, they found the original floorboards, which they restored to their natural color. Horsehair Plaster Homeowners Elizabeth and Peter Georgantas wanted their home’s new plaster walls to look as close to the original horsehair plaster as possible, so they worked with a restorationist and went through seven iterations before landing on the right look. The room’s decor is also a mix of past and present, including an antique trunk paired with a new sofa. Elizabeth found the vintage macramé art piece at local antiques shop Atlantic Nantucket.
I
nterior designer Elizabeth Georgantas and husband Peter (livegeorgantas.com) had already restored two other historic houses in the Town of Nantucket when Peter happened upon the property that would one day become their forever vacation home. Built in 1746, the house—which sits on a former fish-drying lot—had fallen into major disrepair. If anything, though, that only intrigued the couple, who divide their time between Nantucket and Boston. “We didn’t want to buy something that someone else had put their heart into renovating,” says Elizabeth. “We wanted to do that.” At times, however, the couple got more than they bargained for. “Remember the Tom Hanks movie The Money Pit?” Elizabeth says. “That was literally our house.” The almost 300-year-old structure, which included several additions that had been built over the years, hadn’t been updated since the 1940s or ’50s. Plus,
powderpost beetles had infiltrated the woodwork, disintegrating many of the beams, and the original plaster walls crumbled at the touch. “We wanted a project, and we got ourselves a project!” Elizabeth says. “It took three years of actual blood, sweat, and tears.” In addition to replacing the damaged beams and plaster, the couple patched the wood floors where needed and installed a foundation, as the house previously sat only on a collection of loose stones. When they needed to replace any wood, they were careful to bring in reclaimed pieces close to the age of the original. The Georgantases, who have two teen daughters, also created a basement stretching the entire footprint of the house, where they could add a new gym, laundry room, family room, and guest rooms while still maintaining the 18th-century feel of the home’s upper floors. “To take an old house and rip the history out of it and make it something it doesn’t want to be is really sad,” Elizabeth says. “We felt strongly about preserving the past and recreating it where previous owners had removed it.” Elizabeth is drawn to nautical antiques: Vintage ship dioramas and sailor’s woolies—embroidered ship portraits that date back to the 1800s—line the entry (left), and Nantucket lightship baskets add local lore in the living room (above).

Vintage Barstools Because the kitchen wing of the house, which had also included a small laundry room and bathroom, was added in the mid-1900s, there were few historic details to be preserved, meaning the Georgantases had more leeway with their reno options. Removing a small upstairs bedroom created a double-height ceiling in the room and exposed the original wood beams, which along with the beaten-up dark wood floors and vintage stools provide a rustic counterpart to the white walls and oversize island.

Chandelier When the contractors forgot to install one of the glass bottles, Peter had the bright idea to add his own special touch: a Bud Light bottle. “It’s been his joke that this was his one design contribution to the house,” Elizabeth says, “so I left it.”

Cross Beams To infuse some airiness to the dining room (below), the Georgantases relied on a bit of visual trickery. By removing the original plaster to expose the purlins, or cross beams, they made the ceiling feel taller without actually raising it. The antique English refectory table gets plenty of use during the family’s frequent pizza parties. The newly installed reclaimed beams in the breakfast nook (right) mimic the exposed beams that are original to other parts of the home. Elizabeth covered the custom banquettes in faux leather for easy cleanup.
When the house was lifted to add the foundation, the fireplace crumbled to the ground. They rebuilt it by hand, brick by brick, and added a pizza oven to the dining room side.

A Canopy Bed A low ceiling in the guest bedroom didn’t deter Elizabeth from aiming high with the bed. Crafted by a father-and-son team in North Carolina, the Sheraton-style bed was made the same way their family has made them for generations. “My husband thought I was out of my mind,” Elizabeth says, “but I think the canopy bed makes the ceiling feel taller, and it feels authentic, like it was always there.” A coat of white paint prevents the ceiling beams from competing with the bed’s dark brown arches.

Statement Antiques The homeowners left their bedroom pretty much as is, cracks in the beams and all, then decorated the space with a chinoiseriestyle antique decoupaged bed. The bathroom (left) required more work, though. To complete the space, Elizabeth turned an antique dresser into a double vanity. When she found the carved-wood mirror in a Boston showroom, she didn’t know where it was going to go, but she knew she had to have it: “It was one of those things that said, ‘You have to own me. We’ll figure this out together,’” she says.

A. Yes, and no. If your home was built pre-1978, be cautious about toxic lead-based paint, which can flake off, attach to paws, and be ingested while grooming. Glues and wall spackle can coalesce in the stomach, which can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction. Radishes Crunchy and peppery, radishes are a true spring staple as they like to grow in cool temperatures (between 60 and 65°F). Harvest when roots are about 1-inch around (some varieties, such as Cherry Belle, are ready to harvest in as soon as three weeks!). To store, separate roots and greens, wash thoroughly, wrap in a damp paper towel, place in a plastic bag, and refrigerate.

This super-crunchy salad pairs perfectly with grilled chicken or sautéed shrimp. Make the dressing and salad up to 1 day ahead, but don’t toss together until just before serving.

2. Meanwhile, season pork chops with salt and pepper. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook chops, in batches if necessary, turning once, until internal temperature on an instantread thermometer reaches 140°F, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a platter and tent with foil; reserve skillet. 3. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon of oil from reserved skillet. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Add wine and simmer, scraping up browned bits from the bottom of the pan, until syrupy, 2 to 4 minutes. Add stock and simmer until thickened and reduced to about 1/2 cup, 2 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, until sauce is thick and glistens. Stir in thyme. Serve chops alongside radishes garnished with thyme. Drizzle with pan sauce.

What to Plant Now Tomatoes Get a jump start on summer by starting tomato seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Fill starter pots with seedstarting potting mix, sprinkle a few seeds on top, and cover with a thin layer of soil. Lightly water and place in a warm, very sunny window. Thin each pot to 1 seedling, if necessary, and plant outdoors once there are 2 to 3 leaf sets.

2. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F. Whisk together condensed milk, egg yolks, lime zest and juice, and salt in a bowl. Pour into prebaked pie shell. Bake, on middle rack, until edges are set and center jiggles only slightly, 14 to 16 minutes. Cool to room temperature, then chill at least 3 hours or up to overnight. 3. Beat together cream and confectioners’ sugar with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, about 30 seconds. Spoon on top of pie and top with candied lime zest.

1. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Place peel in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to drain. 2. Combine blanched lime peel, granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer until liquid is slightly thickened and peel is translucent, 6 to 8 minutes. 3. Place sanding sugar in a bowl. Add cooked peel and toss to coat; place on prepared baking sheet. Let stand until dry, 25 to 30 minutes.
The Cornell Inn’s Tomato & Fresh Basil Frittata WORKING TIME 20 minutes TOTAL TIME 45 minutes MAKES 6 servings

pint cherry tomatoes, halved

cup chopped fresh basil
2 ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded (about 1/2 cup), divided 2 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded (about 1/2 cup), divided 10 large eggs 1/2
teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Side salad, bacon, and potatoes, for serving
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8-by-8-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Combine tomatoes, basil, and 1/3 cup each Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses in the bottom of the baking dish. Whisk together eggs and Worcestershire in a bowl until fully combined and frothy. Season with salt and pepper. Pour over vegetable mixture and sprinkle with remaining cheeses. 2. Bake until just cooked through, 25 to 28 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm with a side salad, bacon, and potatoes.

Tip o’ the Hat An embroidered and embellished flat cap pays tribute to a larger-than-life family member.
IF THIS HAT COULD TALK, it would be the life of
the party, just as its owner was. Our father, Daniel “Sully” Sullivan, donned the cap—stitched long ago by a family friend in Detroit—every St. Patrick’s Day. The holiday has always been a great celebration in the Sullivan family. Sully liked to say everyone was Irish on St. Paddy’s. You always felt warmth and welcome in his presence—and you were also immediately served a cocktail! It’s been 11 years since his passing, and the hat is one of the things we’ve saved of our father’s. It’s an embodiment of Sully’s fun-loving spirit and sense of humor—

something his five grandchildren have all been lucky enough to inherit. Since Sully’s passing, this hat has been carefully packed up and moved many times—even across the country during a pandemic. Most recently, Patrick ran the New York City Marathon with the American Heart Association in honor of our dad, and he ran the entire 26.2 miles while wearing the hat.
