Little things that matter

in your new bedroom STYLE YOUR NEW BEDROOM INTO AN OASIS OF CALM AND COOL

MIRROR MIRROR: Group a collection of mirrors together to create a sparkling focal point that doubles visually as a headboard. You’ll boost the glamour and light in your space too.

SWEET SLUMBER: The down pillows are in place and the Egyptian cotton sheets are smoothed, now spritz with a scented linen spray that helps you conjured the sweetest of dreams.

SUSPEND ANIMATION: Employ pendant lights instead of traditional lamps for bedside lights and you’ll free up space for your tablet, nightcap and nocturnal beauty serums.

CHIC SEAT: Transform a small corner or awkward bedroom nook into a dressing table: Pair a small desk with a compact stool, mirror and a sleek tray. Add your favourite perfumes and a bud vase and voila: Instant chic!

HOT HUE: Calm café au lait, seafoam, greige: A nest of neutrals calms the soul but a hit of hue – perhaps lemon yellow this season, deep emerald for the next – injects décor currency and personality into your space.

PATTERN PLAY: Whether tailored stripes in black and white or Middle Eastern-inspired paisley in turquoise or burnt orange, add drama and artistry to your room via a single papered accent wall.

NATURAL SELECTION: Bring warmth into even the most modern space with natural elements. A honey-hued wood bed or picture frames, wicker baskets or rattan window blinds layered beneath drapery are timeless and say comfort is key.

THE BEST PART OF BEING AT MY SISTER’S COTTAGE? HANGING OUT WITH MY FAVOURITE NIECE AND NEPHEW (THAT’S JUSTIN ON THE LEFT AND MARIEVE, RIGHT)!

or many, summer in Canada means ditching your city home every Friday and travelling north, west, east or south to the bliss that is cottage country. Even if, like me, you don’t have your own summer place, you’ll spend your time begging, borrowing or stealing a little piece of (usually) waterside heaven from friends and relatives who do (in my case, my sister’s cottage, built by my grandfather in the 1940s). And if that doesn’t work, you’ll find a way to bring the best of cottage decor into your own house. That celebration of the get-awayfrom-it-all lifestyle is what this issue is all about. The interiors that do this look successfully are not dependent on size, budget or location – but there are constants to achieving it. Here are some favourite elements of cottage style living, wherever you are: t A relaxed vibe (think bare feet, open doors and dogs on the sofa) t Being unplugged (the only Twitter feed comes from real birds!) t Windows, windows and more windows (the more natural light, the better) t Ticking stripes (preferably on sink-into cushions on wicker furniture) t Painted vintage pieces (if they’re not family heirlooms now, they will be one day) t Reclaimed rustic wood (see how it’s used by owners Mandi and Kevin Kimsa in their cottage in the story “Small Wonder” on page 78) t Soft, natural fabrics and fibres (chenille, linen, well-washed cotton, rattan) t Nautical-themed accessories (I love the amazing paintings of vintage swimsuits in the Tukums’ cottage in the story “The Romance of It All” on page 84) I’D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR MUSTHAVE COTTAGE STYLE ELEMENTS!

CHANCES ARE YOUR FIRST RIDE WAS IN ONE OF THESE. You probably don’t remember coming home from the hospital in a Dodge Grand Caravan. But 30 years down the road, it’s still leading the way with family-friendly innovations. For instance, safety always comes first thanks to 40 standard and available features. Now add in some real crowd pleasers like one-touch Stow ’n Go seating, oodles of in-floor storage, dual Blu-ray/DVD Entertainment, ParkView Rear Back-up Camera, and a powerful 283 horsepower Pentastar VVT V6 engine that gets as good as 7.9 L/100 km (36 MPG) highway.^ The Dodge Grand Caravan has come a long way since you were a kid, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down now. For 30 years, it’s taken everything a family can throw at it or in it.

Canada’s #1-selling minivan for 30 years.

SECOND GUESSING I’m usually really good at picking out the High or Low rooms in every issue – it’s one of my favourite columns in the magazine – but July 2014 (see page 48) had me stumped! I went back and forth, looking at each room and making note of every little detail. When I finally made up my mind and turned the page, I was wrong! Well done, you had me totally fooled. I can’t wait for your next issue to see if I’ve really lost my touch. JESSICA BLACK, AJAX, ON ®

HOUSEKEEPING

repelling bugs

Ah, the great outdoors: sun a-shining, breeze a-blowing and bugs a-buzzing. Our resourceful research editor, Mary Levitski, shows you how to keep the pests at bay. DEFENSIVE AIDS

1

Protect yourself against bites with formulas that are harsh on bugs but gentle on skin and the environment.

Begin by assessing the problem areas in your yard. Tall grass and standing water attract mosquitoes, so don’t get lazy with the mower, and stay on top of any pooling water. Empty and refill bird baths daily, fill the saucers of potted plants with sand and populate ponds with mosquito-eating fish. (No need to be concerned about your pool; the chlorine will effectively deter bugs.)

BAR Rub this goat’s milk bar on your pulse points (your body heat will release the scent of the essential oils it contains) or, for heightened protection, use it as a shower soap before heading outside.

2 Plant smart. Though insects are known to love flora, some plants will actually discourage them. Add anti-bug herbs like lemon balm and rosemary to your garden, strategically placing them around the areas where people gather. Another great option is a citronella bush, which is synonymous with natural insect control – but practice caution and plant it out of the way, as the leaves can cause skin irritation if they tear.

To keep the cook happy, throw a few sprigs of rosemary on the hot coals of the barbecue. It will not only infuse your food with a savoury flavour but also scent the air with an aroma that wards off bugs.

SPRAY A low dose of DEET (the industry’s go-to insect-repelling substance) provides effective protection with minimal chemical exposure. Great Outdoors Family Defense Insect Repellent Pump SPRAY, $11, J.R. Watkins, jrwatkins.com.

STYLISH SOLUTION Arrange a set of decorative lanterns like Crate and Barrel’s Petalumas (from $45 each, crateandbarrel.ca) in your seating area. Fill with natural citronella candles to create an ambient bug-free zone.

LOTION A plant-based option from a trusted brand, this non-greasy cream is light on your skin but a heavyhitter with insects. Off! Familycare Botanicals Insect Repellent LOTION, $10, available at mass retailers.

LANDSCAPING & HARDSCAPING Homeowners put a lot of work into making the insides of their homes green, but the outsides are just as important. By incorporating more hardscaping features, such as patio stones, onto your property and by planting native plants (rather than sod or seed), you can significantly reduce the maintenance and water needed to care for your lawn. Strategically placed trees and shrubs will also provide your property with more shade, which can reduce the amount of energy needed to cool your home.

windows in your home with eco-friendly versions can have a big payout. Double- and triple-pane windows insulate much better than single-pane styles, in turn reducing your energy bills. They can also come with glazing – a low-emissivity, completely transparent coating that reduces harmful UV rays. But remember: If you’re installing new windows and want to get the full benefit of their ecoefficiency, spend the money on brick-to-brick replacement rather than retrofitting, because while the windows themselves are efficient, the window frames are likely not.

An efficient new fridge can save you up to $200 a year on your energy bills, meaning you will recoup the purchase price in only a few years. Energy Star-compliant dishwashers use not only 50 to 75 percent less energy than older models but also less water – as little as 11 litres per full cycle. Topped with fresh basil leaves, this dessert pays homage to the verdancy of summer.

or children, there’s nothing more exciting than diving into an icy cold snow cone on a sweltering summer afternoon. As the intense heat of August marches on, we start longing for one more taste of that frosty, syrupy goodness. This grown-up version is flavoured with pink grapefruit and guava juices, lending the frozen treat a more refined taste than the artificial red cherry and blue raspberry varieties we enthusiastically slurped down once upon a time. And with a healthy spike of rosé wine in the mix, this is the perfect adult refresher for backyard barbecues and happy hours alike. We’ve ditched the paper cones in favour of something a little more sophisticated, but (no judgement here!) that’s totally up to you.

IN THE WORLD OF DECOR, TOILE HAS GONE FROM TRENDY TO TRADITIONAL AND BACK AGAIN MORE THAN MOST OTHER PRINTS, BUT WE’VE ALWAYS STAYED TRUE TO THIS CLASSIC BEAUTY. DRAWN TO THOSE PASTORAL SCENES OF PICNICS AND NATURE, WE LOVE ITS INTRICATE AND MOSTLY TWOTONED MOTIFS THAT SEEM TO TELL A STORY. AND TOILE ITSELF HAS AN INTERESTING TALE TO TELL: EUROPE’S FIRST TOILE CAME IN THE 17TH CENTURY FROM INDIA, BUT IN 1760, CHRISTOPHE-PHILIPPE OBERKAMPF, A GERMAN IMMIGRANT TO FRANCE, ESTABLISHED A PRINTED-COTTON FACTORY IN JOUY-EN-JOSAS, WHICH SOON BECAME THE MOST IMPORTANT TOILE PRODUCER IN EUROPE. Designer Nancy Fournier transforms a cramped cottage kitchen into a permanent gathering spot for a family on the move. TEXT KATHLEEN DORE | PHOTOGRAPHY ROBIN STUBBERT STYLING CHRISTINE HANLON

IT’S HARD TO

CALL YOUR HOUSE A HOME WHEN,

like Linda and Paul Dobson and their two teenaged boys, you move every couple of years. “When the boys were small, we decided that we should have a place they could always call home,” says Linda. “A cottage was the answer.” They opted for a 1,200square-foot ’60s prefab in Ontario’s picturesque Muskoka, not a surprising choice for the expat couple, who currently live in the United States but hail from Georgetown, Ont. Three years later, it was time to renovate. “We needed to make more room for family and update the interior a bit,” says Linda. That meant taking on a two-year-long overhaul to increase the cottage’s square footage and reinvent the cramped kitchen into something that would work for them. When the sawdust settled, the new kitchen, designed by Nancy Fournier of Northern Living Kitchen & Bath in Seguin, Ont., emerged as the gathering place for family and friends. “It really is the heart of the home,” says Linda. Quite an accomplishment, considering the kitchen posed some serious challenges: It’s only 10 by 13 feet and timber framing posts cut into valuable storage space, which Linda, an avid cook, needs.

ABOVE To create an uninterrupted work zone, designer Nancy Fournier positioned the refrigerator and pantry near the dining table. “In a cottage kitchen, it’s important to keep food storage on the edge of the prep area, as people are always in and out for snacks,” she says. CHANDELIER, Lowe’s.

kitchen To remedy the kitchen’s issues, “we maximized every possible square inch,” says Nancy. Upper cabinets were customized (some are only four inches deep) around the posts to make the most of precious wall space, while lowers were left frameless to add capacious storage. Nancy also used large drawers throughout for easy access to each cabinet’s full depth. The newly installed kitchen island has become a hard-working, multi-functional feature. “Usually, two people sit on one side while two people cook on the other,” says Linda. And when large groups come for dinner, it’s used as a sideboard for a buffet. The butcher-block top has a country feel that complements the rustic architecture of the room and is perfect for rolling dough, which Linda’s pizza-making son loves to do. The posts and beams were the last project the team tackled, but not without some negotiation. Linda likes a bright and feminine style, so she initially wanted to paint all the wood, but Paul balked; he prefers a darker aesthetic. Nancy came up with a compromise: Keep the wood dark and paint the walls a light shade. “Whenever Nancy suggested something, she got it right,” says Linda, who happily chose a creamy yellow, which glows throughout the main floor. The couple loves the result. “It reflects both of us now,” says Linda. “Cottages are so personal, even more so than a primary home, because they tend to stay in the family forever,” says Nancy. Which is exactly the sentiment that pulled the Dobsons back to Ontario in the first place. “Every summer we all come together here,” says Linda. “It’s our constant.”

ABOVE The footed cabinetry under the sink creates the relaxed look homeowner Linda Dobson wanted. An industrial-style pendant light and stainless steel appliances keep the space from feeling too quaint. Dash & Albert RUG, Elte.

RIGHT & FAR RIGHT Using blue as an accent was a natural move for Linda. “I’ve always been partial to blues and, for a cottage, I thought it was important to incorporate colours that come from nature.”

EIGHT TIPS for a front yard

retreat

1

2 TEXT MARY LEVITSKI PHOTOGRAPHY DONNA GRIFFITH

This colourful outdoor oasis for the whole family was once a rundown eyesore. Check out designer Karen Sealy’s eight tips for creating a front-of-the-house retreat to rival any backyard.

Apart from padding out to get the morning paper or let the dog do its business, people often don’t spend much time on their front porches. If you ask Toronto-based designer Karen Sealy, that’s a huge waste. “Canadian summers are always too short,” says Karen, “so when the weather’s warm, we ought to take advantage of every square inch of outdoor space.”

1. SET THE TONE.

“Decor starts well before you step through the front door,” says Karen. “It begins on the sidewalk.” The porch, what she calls a “halfway space,” should give a taste of the interior – in this case, a bright and colourful family home. But it should also speak to its natural surroundings, hence the multitude of potted plants. DESIGN, Sealy Design, sealydesigninc.com; DOORS, WINDOWS, Stone River Windows + Doors.

2. LEND A SENSE OF PRIVACY. A front porch can feel just as secluded as a backyard. Layers of lush greenery separate this little haven from the busy street beyond. “This kind of green ‘fence’ is a lovely way to cut down the noise in a manner that’s cozy

3

for you and pretty for your neighbours,” says Karen. The chunky spindles she chose for the railings (made to mimic the original juliet balcony above) also serve as a great privacy screen.

3. REFERENCE THE SURROUNDINGS IN YOUR DECOR CHOICES. The wicker furniture set echoes the home’s white and butter yellow facade, and its lattice detail emulates the original stained glass windows. The connection between the indoors and out is heightened with accessories in green, purple and pink jewel tones – a palette from Mother Nature’s handbook – and bold floral patterns. ARMCHAIRS, OTTOMAN, The Muskoka Store; SIDE TABLE, IKEA; TOSS CUSHIONS (throughout), HomeSense.

4. DECORATE WITH FLOWERS FRESHLY PICKED FROM YOUR OWN GARDEN (WHERE ELSE?).

4

Windowsills, both interior and exterior, make for ideal display spots. Here, an array of blooms is showcased in a collection of glass vases, bottles and jars. “Half of them came from Value Village and some are old Mason jars,” says Karen. Each vessel holds a different blossom, which amounts to a look that’s charmingly eclectic, befitting the rustic setting.

5. MAKE A STRONG ENTRYWAY. To create an entrance that beckons inward, Karen chose a classic black front door. “The dark shade grounds the light facade,” she says. Matching accessories, such as the pendant light, mailbox and tall planters overflowing with greenery, lend the desired gravitas. White cladding frames the doorway on one side to create the illusion that the entry is centred (it actually sits to the left from the viewpoint of the stairs). A chalkboard easel can occupy little artists for hours. “With the kids busy, Mom and Dad can enjoy a glass of wine in the sitting area,” says the designer. TWO of a kind Homeowner Jenny Smith moved into a new apartment with no furniture and only two suitcases in hand. Luckily, she soon met decorator Michael Penney, a kindred decor spirit who helped her fill her space with the cottage-style charm they both love. TEXT JENNIFER HUGHES | PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEY CAPP | STYLING MICHAEL PENNEY

Homeowner and vintage shopper extraordinaire Jenny Smith found the old chalkboard at a thrift store for $2 and regularly writes favourite quotes on it. “My love of cottage life and living by the water is always reflected in my decorating,” says Jenny. Last year, when Jenny Smith moved into her apartment above a shop in downtown Whitby, Ont., she owned not a single stick of furniture. Having just relocated back home from Alberta (with a mere two suitcases full of belongings), she almost immediately rented the twobedroom space after she fell for its rustic exposed brick walls, high ceilings, hardwood floors and arched windows. It took Jenny only a few weeks to furnish the 700square-foot pad, thanks not only to her love of thrift shopping and bargain hunting (“I found the living room sectional on Kijiji for only $200,” she says. “It was in amazing shape.”) but also to her new job at local decor store Penney & Company. There, she became fast friends with the owner, decorator Michael Penney, who shares Jenny’s cottagestyle aesthetic and love of all things vintage. 62 |

STYLEATHOME.COM AUGUST 2014

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE Jenny scored the plush sectional in the living room on Kijiji for a song and made over the vintage table by cutting it down to coffee-table height and giving it a distressed white paint job, while decorator Michael Penney layered the striped rug on top of the larger jute one for a cozy look and a hit of colour; Jenny and Michael culled plenty of pieces from his shops, Penney & Company, Pineapple Street and Sweet Violet, when pulling together the apartment; bistro-style glasses and linen ticking stripe napkins are country-casual charms that underscore the cottage aesthetic. A hutch and pedestal table from Penney & Company were paired with thrift-store-find dining chairs that happily didn’t even require paint or new upholstery. Jenny found the rug in perfectly good condition by the curb and flipped it over to the faded side for a more rustic look. HUTCH, DINING TABLE, botanical ARTWORK, Penney & Company.

So when it came time to pull Jenny’s place together, Michael jumped right in, recognizing how much potential the space had. “The challenge was to make the rented apartment reflect her style without making any expensive or permanent changes,” he explains. Key upgrades boosted the basic kitchen’s charm: The backsplash was given a crisp black and white striped paint job, the doors from the upper cabinetry were removed and vintage-look floral wallpaper was used to line the backs of the nowopen shelving. “Michael just happened to have the wallpaper in his basement, which is like an awesome prop room full of amazing stuff,” says Jenny. And then there was the day she found some old barnboard behind a church, and happily carted it away and turned it into a wall-mounted headboard. “I was a little worried about what the landlord would say about that one,” Jenny admits. “But she actually really liked it!” In fact, the landlord was pleased with all her upgrades. It wasn’t long, however, before a new space beckoned. Jenny left this apartment when she fell for a charmer of a cottage by the lake. But for that move, she left with way more than just two suitcases. FOR SOURCES, SEE OUR WORKBOOK

he Canadian cottage is more than just a house by the lake: It’s a cultural phenomenon that’s practically synonymous with family. And this Muskoka, Ont., cottage owned by Toronto couple Katie Mills, a real estate agent, and David O’Connor, a chiropractor, epitomizes the whole “family cottage” concept. The story goes as far back as the ’70s (or further back if you consider that Katie’s parents first met in Muskoka). In 1978, Katie’s father, also a real estate agent (the two now work together in the family business), purchased an island with only 15 cottages on it. “He and a partner subdivided the island into 56 lots, and he kept the bay and beach for our family,” says Katie. “Then, 25 years ago, he gave me and my five other siblings one lot each, and it was ours to do with what we wanted.”

In a corner of the Muskoka room, a white pedestal table surrounded by antique pine chairs serves as a spot to play games or eat snacks. For Katie and David, the time to build on their own two-acre property came in 2009. “Having spent my summers as a child in a 100-year-old cottage, I didn’t want this one to look like a brand new home,” she says. Katie envisioned a place that reflected her roots and complemented the surroundings, but steered clear of dark log-cabin-style rusticity. She also wanted family-friendly functionality (the couple has three children: Mason, 11, Davis, 7, and Dawson, 3) and something that would be suitable for entertaining, especially for large get-togethers. This meant constructing a 3,400-square-foot open bungalow-style house that melded traditional architectural elements with clean lines and a light, fresh palette. Perched high up on a hill, the cottage boasts large windows and glass-panelled sliding doors that bring in light and the spectacular views. “To me, the sun sparkling on the water is the most beautiful thing in the world,” says Katie. In the process of building a cottage that honoured the past, the couple created a welcoming space that accommodates their immediate and extended family in the present. “In the summer, on any given weekend, there could be 15 of us here,” says Katie. “Spending time on the water, hanging out with the kids, entertaining family and friends and creating meaningful memories is what cottage living is all about.” FOR SOURCES, SEE OUR WORKBOOK

THE SCENIC ROUTE Weekend living and cottage style are synonymous for many Canadians. Whether your days are spent dockside by the lake or on a porch in the city, certain things are universal to the appeal: comfortably casual surroundings, light and easy meals, a sense of retreating from the hustle and bustle, and an aesthetic that celebrates everything summer has to offer.

There’s a certain voyeuristic pleasure in peeking into a space that’s not yours – especially when it belongs to a builder of dreamy custom homes. And when that space is a 4,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom house cradled in Muskoka granite in Ontario’s cottage country? Divine. Completed last May, the cottage – built and owned by Scott Bachly of Bachly Construction in Oakville, Ont., and his wife, Jackie – is the epitome of lakeside luxury: traditional on the outside and modern yet relaxed on the inside, where nearly every window captures a sublime snippet of lake and trees. The couple found the paradaisical patch on Lake Joseph about five years ago. Back then, it had a 40-year-old cottage with a 900square-foot new-build bunkie on it, complete with a garage and a basement. Though in great shape, the main building simply wasn’t big enough for their family of seven (the couple has five grown kids) or the many friends they planned to host. OPPOSITE, TOP LEFT Style inspiration came from one of Jackie and Scott’s favourite vacation spots – Petit St. Vincent island in the Grenadines, where the decor is very rustic, with wood and stone and white upholstery. So Scott replaced the cottage by building a new two-storey structure. To blend the build with the existing bunkie, he created similar peaked roofs and gables, and then covered the exterior in a pre-finished greenish taupe wood siding that gracefully melts into the landscape. The wraparound ipe and cedar deck maximizes enjoyment of the magnificent view. Next came the decorating, and Jackie knew exactly what she was going for. “I didn’t want that overstuffed Muskoka look,” she says. “I wanted it to be modern with clean lines, so I kept everything light and fresh.” To help achieve this, Jackie sought the advice of design-savvy friend Michele Hatziioannou, owner of the furnishing and decor shop House Warmings in Oakville. “Jackie didn’t want to use a ton of colour,” says Michele, “so we used a neutral palette and made it pop with accents like nautical blue and white ticking and kelly green.” Repeated hits of iron, visible in various light fixtures, add heft and edginess, so the space doesn’t feel too slick in its rural setting. After all, one of the main draws of the sticks is, of course, the sticks themselves. “We left the windows unadorned, because the view is so spectacular. It’s the star of the show,” says Jackie. Even the most smartphone-distracted visitor won’t be able to help but notice the nature. And that’s why you’ll find the Bachly bunch at the cottage most weekends from May until the end of September. “We entertain way too much,” quips Scott. “Sometimes, we’ll have upward of 20 people on a Saturday afternoon, showing up in their boats and sitting on our dock for ‘docktails,’ as we call them.” When it’s time to retreat to the cottage, guests inevitably hit up one of the many sitting areas, whether for snacks on the screenedin porch or late-afternoon snoozes in the airy great room, with its skyhigh ceiling and deep sofas. And that’s the fantastic thing about this space: Despite all its grandeur, it still feels cottagey and comfortable, even to those who don’t live here.

So simple, so inviting: You can’t go wrong with nautically nuanced decor at the cottage. Making use of a little nook in the entryway, Jackie and Michele chose a small bench for slipping shoes on and off. BENCH, TOSS CUSHIONS, House Warmings; Muskoka Long Boat ARTWORK, Muskoka Living Interiors.

cottages boasting all the modern conveniences and square footage to spare, Toronto-based couple Mandi and Kevin Kimsa have one thing to say: No, thank you. “Our previous cottage in Muskoka was 6,000 square feet and more of a second home,” says Mandi. “We wanted to get away from that with something smaller that offered a more rustic experience for our family.” With six kids – Kevin’s son, Josh, 22, and daughter, Kailey, 17; and the couple’s young children: Atticus, 9, Finn, 7, Toby, 5, and Esmé, 15 months – it might be assumed that extra space was non-negotiable, but that wasn’t the case. “We resisted the tendency to go big in the search for something simpler.” Mandi and Kevin found that something three years ago on Stony Lake in Ontario’s Kawartha region, where they instantly fell for a 1,600-square-foot 1898 cottage with an idyllic island setting. “The draw was the beauty of the lake and the history of the cottage,” says Mandi. “We loved that it was so old and that we could restore it to meet our family’s unique needs.” One of those needs is no computers or TVs. “We wanted a place where we could take a break from technology and gravitate to family-centred activities.” To begin the transformation, they enlisted Toronto-based

designer Stephan Howard of Flik by Design, who had worked on their city home. “Mandi is from Nova Scotia and favours bright East Coast colours, while Kevin values practicality,” says Stephan. “They both wanted a cottage that looked lived in.” Stephan’s starting point was the structure. While sound, it needed a few renovations, such as adding a loft bedroom and updating the kitchen and bathroom, as well as some minor tweaks, including restoring the original windows and pine floors. Stephan kept the cottage’s 19thcentury provenance in mind throughout and used new materials – such as the ceiling beams in the living and dining rooms and the kitchen cabinetry – to appear as if they’d always been there. The deft balance of past and present is not the only trait all the rooms share. “Colour is very important here,” says Stephan. “A cottage allows us to explore some interesting shades.” The chosen palette exudes vibrancy, from turquoise to yellow to kelly green. erfectly imperfect: It may sound like a contradiction in terms, but it’s the spirit that guided the design of Tradewinds, a stately 7,000-squarefoot cottage nestled just above the shores of Muskoka’s Lake Rosseau in Ontario. It was those very shores that attracted homeowners Kai and Joanna Tukums back in 2011. After considering their options, Kai, who is self-employed, and Joanna, a chartered accountant, made the decision to build a dream getaway for their growing family. But first, they had to find the land. “We were looking for a property with unobstructed views, natural privacy and great sun exposure,” says Kai – a tall order on an already popular lake. But when the couple found this verdant plot, complete with a stretch of sandy beach, they knew it was the right site for the coastal-inspired cottage they envisioned. Their first call after securing the lot was to builder and designer Cory DeFrancisco of Muskoka Living Interiors, with whom they’d successfully collaborated on the renovation of their Toronto home. “We really clicked,” says Cory. “They gave me carte blanche to run with my creativity.” With Kai and Joanna’s blessing, that creative streak led Cory to sketch out an all-season dwelling that would pay homage to the shingled homes of Nantucket and the Hamptons, with a decidedly Muskoka twist. “We drew inspiration from older Muskoka cottages and the romance of what cottage living used to be,” says Cory. His challenge: to create something new that looked like it had proudly weathered many seasons of sun, wind and rain – not to mention generations of kids jumping off the dock and adults laughing over sunset cocktails. That’s where Cory’s perfectly imperfect approach came into play. For the home’s roof, he chose cedar-shake shingles that were handsplit to create a more authentic look. He encouraged the masons to be less precise when building the chimney and fireplace, allowing the mortar to spill over the stone.

RIGHT The bright galley-style laundry room is outfitted with built-in appliances, upper storage and a bench that runs the length of the windows. BOTTOM Substantial black hooks punctuate the poplar tongue-and-groove walls of the mud room area in the laundry room, while a checkered toss cushion references the home’s navy and white scheme.

And in the kitchen, he opted to distress the cabinets before they were painted rather than applying a faux finish after the fact. “We dinged them up and then painted them so they’d have the look of older cabinetry that had been repainted and refurbished over the years,” he explains. To keep the sprawling seven-bedroom, six-bath home feeling cozy, he proposed a cluster of rooms – with no fully openconcept spaces, except for the great room – where the ceiling heights wouldn’t exceed 10 feet. Cory also layered every wall, ceiling, doorway and window frame with custom millwork. “There’s almost no drywall in this house,” he says. “Instead you’ll find cladding, beadboard and applied moulding in everything from poplar to antique hemlock to antique oak. We really played with texture and sheen to give this cottage its romance and authenticity.” When it came time to furnish Tradewinds, Cory looked to fashion for visual cues, pulling in nautical Breton stripes and a restrained palette of almost exclusively navy and white. The scheme is most playfully on display in the living room, where paintings of vintage bathing suits draw the eye to the side of the fireplace. “Our cottage is right on the water, so the blue and white really resonated with us as an extension of the outdoors,” says Kai. Now, with the completion of the house and the arrival of a second daughter, the Tukums are ready to welcome the summer of 2014. “Our ideal day includes a morning coffee on the dock with a house full of guests,” says Joanna. “After an afternoon spent enjoying the water, we like to host a large barbecue, then enjoy the fireplace in the living room with a nice glass of wine.” If someone spills on the slipcovered sofa, oh, well – it’s meant to be cleaned anyway. And that’s just the way Cory planned it. The romance of cottaging’s past lives on at Tradewinds.

OPPOSITE, TOP LEFT In the master bath, Cory used a soft blue for the vanity and let the floor treatment, a wooden trellis pattern with inset marble tiles, act as the focus. The round window between the sinks is reminiscent of a ship’s porthole. OPPOSITE, TOP RIGHT The grand cottage draws architectural inspiration from coastal homes in Nantucket and the Hamptons. But the white cedar bevel siding with charcoal trim provides crisp contrast that feels authentic to the Muskoka region, explains Cory. OPPOSITE, BOTTOM “The kitchen is my favourite room,” says homeowner Joanna Tukums. And it’s no wonder. The play of clean white cabinetry and backsplash tiles against the warmth of an antique-oak island and pantry makes it an inviting space for cooking and entertaining.

STYLEATHOME.COM AUGUST 2014

Preheat the oven to 500°F with a pizza stone (or heavy-duty baking sheet turned upside down) on the centre rack. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat; add the rapini, onion and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes, until softened. Stir in the rosemary, sea salt and chili flakes and transfer the mixture to a bowl; cover to keep warm. Remove the sausage from its casing and add to the skillet, crumbling the meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Cook on medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes, until no longer pink. With the pizza dough rolled out and placed on a cornmeal-dusted pizza peel, scatter the rapini mixture over the dough. Top with the sausage, cherry tomatoes and dollops of the ricotta. Sprinkle with the Parmesan. Give the pizza peel a shake to make sure the pizza isn’t sticking and slide it onto the hot stone in the oven. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the crust is golden and blistered. Remove the pizza from the oven with tongs and slide it onto a cutting board. Slice and serve.

With the pizza dough rolled out and placed on a cornmeal-dusted pizza peel, use a small palette knife to spread the crème fraîche over the dough. Scatter the mushroom mixture evenly overtop. Sprinkle with the fresh mozzarella and Parmesan. Give the pizza peel a shake to make sure the pizza isn’t sticking and slide it onto the hot stone in the oven. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the crust is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted. Remove the pizza from the oven with tongs and slide it onto a cutting board. Let the pizza rest for 3 minutes to allow the cheese to set. Top with the baby arugula, drizzle with the truffle oil and season with the pepper. Slice and serve.

PIZZA DIAVOLA WITH BUFFALO MOZZARELLA & CALABRESE SALAMI PREP & COOK TIME 1 HOUR I MAKES ONE 12" PIZZA

1

10-oz Thin Crust Pizza Dough ball (see recipe, right), shaped into a 12" circle ¼ cup tomato sauce 5 slices Calabrese salami ¼ cup sliced fire-roasted sweet peppers 3 oz fresh buffalo mozzarella, torn into pieces 2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan ¼ cup fresh basil leaves 2 tsp finely chopped pepperoncini pepper Preheat the oven to 500°F with a pizza stone (or heavy-duty baking sheet turned upside down) on the centre rack. With the pizza dough rolled out and placed on a cornmeal-dusted pizza peel, use a small palette knife to spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough. Place the salami slices, peppers and mozzarella evenly over the sauce. Sprinkle with the Parmesan. Give the pizza peel a shake to make sure the pizza isn’t sticking and slide it onto the hot stone in the oven. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the crust is blistered and golden and the cheese is melted. Remove the pizza from the oven with tongs and slide it onto a cutting board. Top the hot pizza with the fresh basil leaves and pepperoncini pepper. Allow to cool for 3 minutes before slicing and serving.

4½ 1 1 1¾ ¼ 2

cups all-purpose or whole wheat flour tsp sea salt tsp active dry yeast cups room temperature water cup extra-virgin olive oil tbsp cornmeal

Place the flour, salt and yeast in the bowl of an electric stand mixer. Pour in the water and the olive oil and stir with a wooden spoon to combine, scraping down the sides until the mixture forms a shaggy dough. Using the dough hook attachment, mix on low speed for 8 to 10 minutes, stopping the machine as necessary to adjust the dough and ensure even kneading. After 10 minutes the dough should be smooth, shiny and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. When ready to make the pizzas, divide the dough into 4 equal pieces, about 10 ounces each. Shape the pieces by hand to form tight round balls and rest, loosely covered, on the countertop for about 30 minutes, until slightly risen. Dust the countertop with a little bit of flour, if necessary, and stretch and roll each ball out to a 12" circle about ¼" thick. Place each round on a pizza peel (or an upside-down baking sheet) dusted with a little cornmeal to prevent sticking. Give the pizza peels a shake to ensure that once the pizzas are topped they will readily slide onto the hot stone in the oven. The dough is now ready for the toppings. STYLEATHOME.COM AUGUST 2014

PRODUCER CATHERINE THERRIEN

Every issue, we pick our favourite piece from one of the featured interiors. This month, we chose a graphic toss cushion.

inspiration

When you think of classic gingham, Dorothy’s blue dress in The Wizard of Oz or a red tablecloth from an Italian bistro may come to mind. But while it’s completely suited to a nostalgic setting, the simple graphic pattern is equally at home in a modern environment. Take Tonic Living’s oversized inky blue and creamy white check, for example. Its large scale is bold and distinctive – the perfect accent in a streamlined space.
