Handmade Coastal Lights
Create a custom glow with a statement fixture you can easily make from craft store staples. Designer Tori Rubinson topped off this family room with woven bowls decorated with colorful accents and wooden beads. Use the ceiling height as your guide, opting for small, shallow vessels if it is less than nine feet. To assemble, cut a hole in the base of the basket, weave the cable through and screw in the lightbulb — or, better yet, take Rubinson’s advice and “get a really good electrician to help you.” FOR SIMILAR: CABLE SET FOR PENDANT LIGHT, FROM $22, ETSY.COM; LOKALT BASKET, $13, IKEA.COM.

Spring Into a Fresh New Book FEEL-GOOD READ
Chorus by Rebecca Kauffman The members of the Shaw family are no strangers to tragedy: Their mother’s mysterious death when many of the seven siblings were young haunts them still, and the way the clan dealt with a teenage pregnancy divides them for years. Told from rotating perspectives through the eyes of the siblings from early in the 20th century through the 1950s, the tale makes the reader part of the family as the children grow up and deal with addiction, caring for their aging father, the loss of a spouse and finding their places in the world. This is a story about love and resilience. Despite everything the world throws at them, the Shaws persevere, and that’s a hopeful message we can all use. $26

Where I Can’t Follow by Ashley Blooms
The Last Suspicious Holdout: Stories by Ladee Hubbard
GH SEAL STAR OF THE MONTH
In a little Kentucky mountain town hit hard by poverty and the opioid epidemic, magical doors appear as a chance at escape. But once residents step through these portals, there’s no turning back. When Maren receives one, she’s tempted by the idea of getting away from her granny’s worsening memory, complicated relationships and money struggles that even selling pills doesn’t relieve, but she worries that taking the same way out her mother did won’t really fix anything. This gripping and fantastically realistic novel explores what it would feel like to have an escape hatch—and the agonizing decision it would create. $17
This collection of absorbing stories introduces us to the Black residents of a Southern suburb in the years between the beginning of the Clinton administration and the first time Barack Obama was elected. It’s about the insidious pain of racism, the war on drugs (and who it really punishes) and the struggle inherent in poverty — but at its heart, it’s a portrait of members of a community getting by together. While these stories don’t flinch from the tough truth about hard subjects, every one features an undercurrent of fierce love and a steely kind of resolve. $25

For most of us, our birthday feels a bit like a little personal New Year. And March has always been my month. This year, it also marks an anniversary of another sort — two years since the start of pandemic pandemonium. Can you believe it? And could you even imagine going back to our pre-COVID lives? When it comes to commemorating my own milestones, I usually try to look back on the year to reflect on my goals, the lessons I’ve learned, how I’d like to move forward and what I’m most grateful for. I’m not sure how ready we feel to do this for that other “anniversary,” but let’s give it a go. There’s no doubt that the pandemic has been tough, whether we’ve been struggling to find child care, coping with loss or simply trying to stay grounded in a world constantly in flux. I am trying to focus on the silver linings. Over the past two years, many of us have spent more time with family than ever before, made efforts to find work-life balance (which might have seemed tricky at first) and, yes, baked our way through cookbooks, Instagram and TikTok (always a plus in my mind!). We’ve also been learning to take better care of ourselves — and of our homes: painting, hanging photos, corralling odds and ends. On that front, if you’re looking to channel your inner Marie Kondo, we’ve got you covered: Check out page 22 for inspiring and ingenious organizing tricks from designers, pros (including Kondo herself) and the GH staff to get all your stuff in order. Kindness is in the air too. We’re getting to know our neighbors in new ways (see page 105) and reaching out to friends near and far. Studies show that beyond making us feel good in the moment, kindness can actually help us live better and longer lives (more on that on page 41). One of my favorite parts of the past two years has been the Listen & Learn series we started with the GH team. It’s part of our continued effort to see the world through the lens of other people’s experiences. At our last meeting, Emily Goldman, an editor at our sister brand Prevention, shared her journey with a high-impact but often invisible health issue: type 1 diabetes. Her illuminating essay about the challenges of living with this chronic disease is on page 49. Who knows how the world will change by my next birthday, but here’s the

A: It’s true: Toners acquired a bad rap because some older formulas were high in dehydrating alcohol, which could cause dryness or irritation, especially in those without oily or acne-prone skin. But they’re having a resurgence, thanks to a new generation of milder versions. “There are now less-drying toners on the market that are alcoholand astringent-free,” says GH Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek. They’re often made with ingredients that treat a range of skin types and concerns; add one to enhance your routine after cleansing and before applying other leave-on skincare products. Moisturize right…
Don’t forget your lips.
Obviously hydrating skin is crucial to combating dryness, but not all moisturizing skincare products are created equal. According to GH Beauty Lab testing, “face lotions and creams are generally more hydrating than oils, serums and other formulas — and they can increase skin’s moisture for hours,” says GH Beauty Lab Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. For maximum efficacy, “look for moisturizers that contain humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which can bind or hold on to water effectively,” Aral says, plus “ingredients that help repair the skin barrier, such as
Lips can be the most parched area on your face, since they have fewer protective layers of skin. Apply a rich lip balm or treatment every time you moisturize your face — in the morning and evening and throughout the day as needed, since eating and drinking can remove the product. The most effective formulas contain a combination of moisturizing ingredients (e.g., plant oils and emollients like squalane and triglycerides) and occlusive ingredients
Boost your application. Smooth a layer of face moisturizer on clean skin after other treatment products like serums but before sunscreen in the a.m. (try a hydrating serum for even more moisture). To help heal dehydrated skin quickly, massage moisturizer into skin using a circular motion. “The technique helps push hydrating ingredients deeper into rough patches and dry lines for an immediate plumping effect,” says Ava Shamban, M.D., a dermatologist in Los Angeles.

…and often. Don’t wait until your face is noticeably dry to moisturize; consistency is key for keeping skin hydrated and healthy in the long term and preventing dehydration from occurring in the first place. “The best treatment to replenish skin hydration is applying a topical face moisturizer twice daily in the morning and evening,” says Jeanine Downie, M.D., a dermatologist at Image Dermatology in Montclair, NJ.
Cleanse with care. For dry skin, just any old soap won’t do: Some face washes can over-cleanse skin, exacerbating dryness. “A gentle soap- and fragrance-free cleanser that doesn’t contain harsh sulfates and is pH balanced will maintain the skin’s barrier without stripping or hurting the skin microbiome,” says Whitney Bowe, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. Choose a formula that’s labeled “moisturizing” or “hydrating” for best results. To further prevent skin dehydration, try washing your face with a cleanser only in the evening, rinsing with just water in the morning, suggests Tess Mauricio, M.D., a dermatologist in San Diego. Turn down the heat when you wash. Hot and steamy water might feel amazing, but it can be harmful to skin, Dr. Bowe says, by disrupting its barrier, leading to sensitivity. “For the most skinfriendly cleanse, make sure the water temperature is lukewarm, and test it on your wrist first,” suggests GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist

Be smart about exfoliating. While you may think of exfoliation as a way to slough off dry, flaky patches, a harsh face peel or scrub is the enemy of parched skin, as it can disrupt skin’s moisture barrier and remove its naturally occurring hydrating oils. Avoid stronger acids like glycolic acid and rougher exfoliants like sugar and salt. Instead, try a gentler face peel formula that contains lactic acid or fruit acids or a face scrub with round jojoba beads, which are less likely to be abrasive on skin. Apply your exfoliator once per week to avoid dehydrating skin, the GH Beauty Lab recommends.
Invest in a humidifier.
Hydrate from the inside out.
Lack of humidity in the air in winter or an arid climate can contribute to dry skin. To counteract it, “I always recommend that my patients use a humidifier while they sleep to boost skin’s moisture levels,” Dr. Downie advises.
Skin moisturization happens from within too. “Drinking enough water definitely improves skin hydration,” Dr. Downie says. “Aim for at least eight glasses, or 64 fluid ounces, of water [or other sugar-free beverages such as coffee, tea and sparkling water] per day.”

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE to
Textured Hair All wavy and curly strands aren’t the same, and they shouldn’t be treated that way. The GH Beauty Lab breaks down what differentiates each curl type—plus, key care and styling tips to make the most of your natural shape. by SABI NA WIZEM A N N

What determines texture? Hair type, from pin-straight to tightly coiled, depends on the shape of the hair follicle, says Rolanda Wilkerson, Ph.D., principal scientist and senior director at Procter & Gamble. Straight hair emerges from a round follicle, while oval and twisted-oval follicles create wavy and curly hair. Hair thickness is also contingent on follicle size: The larger the area it grows from, the thicker the hair strand. The chemical bonds in hair influence curl pattern too. “Hair is primarily made of the protein keratin and also contains cysteine, an amino acid,” Wilkerson explains. In
naturally straight hair, the cysteine groups are spread apart, so they cannot interact, but in wavy and curly hair, they are closer and can bond easily, contributing to curling.
twists from each person’s hair, the scientists came up with a system that assigned a number to each hair type. This informs the categories hair experts use today:
How to ID your curl pattern
Type 1 is straight, 2 is wavy, 3 is curly and 4 is coily, with more specific subgroups A, B and C beneath each.
Over the years, scientists have attempted to classify hair texture by measuring different parameters of the hair fiber. A study by the L’Oréal Institute for Ethnic Hair and Skin Research organized hair shapes into eight types by studying 2,449 subjects from 22 countries across continents. Measuring curl diameter and curl index (the ratio of the stretched length of the hair to its length at rest) and counting waves and MARCH 2022 G H

Try it at home: To find out what texture(s) your hair contains, lay a few strands of wet hair flat against a white surface and watch them take their natural shape as they air-dry. Then match your strands to the wave and curl types on the next page. (Type 1 hair is straight, so we start with Type 2.)
ZE
N
VIO
TYPE 2 Wavy
TYPE 3 Curly
TYPE 4 Coily
Type 2 hair includes natural waves ranging from barely there to almost curly. Waves differ from curls in that they don’t form twists that wrap around themselves.
This category encompasses hair that curls into springs and corkscrew shapes. When hair is wet, curls usually look like waves, but they take on a three-dimensional swirl shape as they dry.
This type of hair can have either a compact zigzag pattern that doesn’t twist around itself or tightly wound S-shaped curls.
2A Soft Wave
3A Soft Curl
4A Coiled
Hair grows straight at the crown and creases toward the ends, forming waves with a slight bend.
Type 3A is defined by stretched spirals of curls that are large in diameter and cascade down from the crown. The big, soft curls are usually bouncy even when minimally styled.
Curl type 4A can be recognized by small but distinctively S-shaped strands sequenced into tight looped rings.
CARE + STYLING This texture is easy to comb and requires minimal styling, as the waves form naturally when hair is airdried. Look for shampoos and conditioners made to enhance volume; to boost movement, apply a light mousse to roots and avoid rich creams that can flatten waves. GH Beauty Lab test winner: Biolage Whipped Volume Mousse, $19, Ulta
CARE + STYLING Known as the easiest curls to manage, they may not require much styling. Look for light curl-enhancing creams to help control and define strands. GH Beauty Award winner: Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Curl Defining Cream, $5, Walmart
CARE + STYLING To minimize damage, choose shampoos and conditioners rich in moisturizing ingredients and gently pat hair dry without rubbing. This texture benefits from additional nourishment; apply hair creams and oils to keep ringlets protected and plush-feeling. GH Beauty Award winner: Pantene Gold Series Hair Repair Anti-Breakage Combing Crème, $8, walmart.com
2B Wavy
3B Curly
4B Zigzag
Type 2B hair grows straight but starts forming medium to large S-shaped waves at the crown (think beachy waves).
This texture (like Zendaya’s above) features well-defined medium-size springs that resemble corkscrews.
These curls are characterized by a tiny zigzag pattern, often accompanied by compressed and S-shaped coils.
CARE + STYLING To preserve the bouncy shape and prevent tangling, use a lightweight shampoo and conditioner to soften hair without compromising volume. This type can be prone to frizz, so apply a light leave-in conditioner to coat strands and help keep the shape intact. GH Beauty Lab test winner: Orlando Pita Play Well Behaved Anti-Frizz Cream Serum, $24, amazon.com
CARE + STYLING The spirals create natural fullness by bouncing off one another, but they’re vulnerable to breakage and frizz. To reduce damage, dry curls with a cotton T-shirt, which is gentler than a towel, says Nikki Nelms, a celebrity hairstylist in New York City. Try a smoothing hair oil or serum to fight frizz and add shine. GH Beauty Lab test winner: Goldwell Kerasilk Control Rich Protective Oil, $33, beautycarechoices.com
CARE + STYLING For this type, “conditioning is key, both in the shower and afterward,” Nelms advises. Cleanse and soften curls using a mild shampoo and conditioner. As 4B curls are most fragile when wet, apply a rich leave-in conditioner to be sure hair is well conditioned before styling. GH Beauty Lab pick: Pattern Leave-In Conditioner, $25, Sephora
2C Deep Wave
3C Ultra-Curly
4C Tightly Coiled
This includes small to medium-size waves, like Shakira’s above, that form an S shape as they grow, on the border between wavy and curly hair.
3C curls are smaller and more tightly packed, and they can vary from precisely defined to loose helixes.
Type 4C strands (like Viola Davis’s above) are more delicate than any other pattern and have a very tight zigzag shape.
CARE + STYLING Deep waves are the most susceptible to frizz of the wavy hair types. Apply styling products that balance preventing frizz with maintaining hair’s fullness, like leave-in conditioners and hair serums. GH Beauty Lab test winner: Kérastase Discipline Spray Fluidissime, $39, kerastase-usa.com
CARE + STYLING To keep them full and soft, use gentle shampoos like cleansing conditioners (a.k.a. co-washes), which have higher ratios of conditioning ingredients to clean and nourish. Try styling with a curl-defining hair gel to hold shape and protect against frizz. GH Beauty Award winner: Dove Amplified Textures Shine & Moisture Finishing Gel, $7, drugstores

Transform an unused coat closet into a deluxe pantry. Put empty space to use by carving out a luxurious cupboard that makes assembling meals and snacks a breeze. The trick: Aim to balance storage bins with acrylic organizers. Put baking essentials and cereal in airtight containers and snacks such as chips in large labeled baskets.
“
The kitchen is used every day, but can fall to the bottom of our list of organizing priorities. If nothing else, try to keep countertops free of food items, small appliances and general clutter. — Jeni Aron, professional organizer
Corral condiments in labeled bins.
Install a pullout pantry.
Stocking up on products you use often can help minimize shopping trips, but all those cans and jars can create an organizational disaster. Avoid this by placing 16"-deep bins in your pantry’s bottom drawer. Label each bin to make it easy to find what you need quickly.
Pullout cabinets, like this Kesseböhmer one from Häfele, make it possible to access items from both sides. “They also solve a classic pantry problem,” says Bob Bakes, cofounder and head of design at Bakes & Kropp. “With static single-hinge door systems, items toward the back tend to get buried. Not so with these cabinets.”
Put pots on a sliding shelf.
Organize spirits by type.
Ever struggled to fit several circular items, like pots and pans, into a square cabinet? That problem is solved by this corner pullout cabinet system, Kesseböhmer LeMans from Häfele, which is another Bakes & Kropp favorite. It opens and closes easily and makes pots in the back completely accessible.
Turn an ordinary closet into a conversation starter like style influencer Kristen Lawler did with the help of California Closets. The nifty setup, which is fit for entertaining, is right next to her wet bar and keeps her collection of spirits stored in an efficient way. “It’s easy to find what you need and recognize when you need to replenish something,” she says. To take it to the next level, install motion-sensor lights that turn on when the doors open.

Design a hideaway beverage nook. Drawing inspiration from the craftsmanship and timelessness of English kitchens, designer Kate Marker dreamed up an eye-pleasing pantry cabinet that’s all about functionality. “This has specific zones that include not just storage as basic pantries do, but also a delightful counter workspace — with a Native Trails Malibu sink — for prepping and pouring morning coffee,” she says.

Never miss an opportunity to fill an empty corner with functional accents. Designer Kate Lester transformed a Hermosa Beach, CA, butler’s pantry with reclaimed barnwood shelves that have a farmhouse flair. “It’s a great way to incorporate a little personality along with practical storage,” she says. When it comes to styling, Lester recommends placing your most-used items on the bottom shelves in an appealing way. “Integrate texture, pattern and contrast, and don’t forget interesting decorative accessories,” she says.
“
Honor the limitations of your home. Its size forces you not to overcrowd it. You’ll be more intentional with things you welcome into your space and, overall, create better habits in what you decide to keep versus not keep.

Create a mudroom “pantry.” Designating specific areas for groups of items is especially important in tight spaces like this makeshift mudroom. Use the back of the door for masks, and organize them by family member. Put shoes on the center shelves; pet accessories and outdoor necessities, including sunscreen and insect repellent, on upper shelves; and small items like hand sanitizer in drawers.
Use bins as drawers. In this compact bathroom, acrylic bins keep essentials organized and accessible. “The hidden closet between the studs offers major function without becoming another visual element in the bathroom,” says Settled’s Larisa Bright, cofounder and principal organizer.
Stow things under seating. What was once a long, narrow porch in a historic San Antonio home became a casual play area featuring a double-duty bench. Cubbies containing woven bins hold LEGOs, board games and toy trains. “We design our spaces to help children engage, and portable storage gives them the best opportunity for continued learning and play,” says Shawna Percival, founder and creative director of Styleberry Creative Interiors.
Don’t forget the backs of doors! Leverage the space inside any door, especially if you’re working with limited square footage. Group items by category — sports, wellness, medications, pet accessories and so on — to keep it all looking polished. “It’s also great for renters, as it’s a no-drill solution that hooks top and bottom to the door,” says Settled’s Pamela Meluskey.
Store seasonal decor in designated containers. Sorting through varied collections of decorations during the year can be nerve-racking. Make it much less stressful by storing pieces in labeled weathertight bins. The owners of this Bethesda, MD, home even stack their storage bins in calendar order.
“
Labeling everything may feel like a tedious step, but it’s an incredibly important part of organization. Labels not only help identify things, but also hold you accountable to put things back in their designated places.

Take your no-fail organizing ideas to the garage.

While a garage is a utilitarian space, there’s no reason it can’t be full of visual appeal. Settled’s Larisa Bright says relying on the concept of symmetry is most effective when it comes to hanging tools. “Focus on one item as your center point and do your best to edit down your inventory,” she says.
Create a triplepurpose space. Washington, DC–based architecture firm Teass\Warren Architects carved out a workspace within a mudroom-pantry setup, “which allowed the homeowner to be part of the main living level of the house, but with some separation from the more active areas like the living room and the kitchen,” says Charles Warren, cofounder and principal of design. And there’s another bonus: “We included pocket doors so the space can be closed off if she needs some quiet, needs to take a Zoom call or just wants to hide a messy desk.”
“

“
Give every space in your home a name based on how you want it to function. An example would be to designate an area in your kitchen for all your small appliances and name it ‘appliance garage.’ Naming spaces, even the smallest, creates a place for all your belongings and sets boundaries for what should be stored in each area.

Build in a gift-wrapping station. Good design improves your everyday life, and that’s the principle Pure Salt Interiors cofounder Aly Morford kept in mind when fashioning her Southern California home office. From a gift-wrapping area for dressing up last-minute presents to a spot for her three school-aged children’s supplies, the space “takes the effort out of the mundane,” she says. A clean, neutral color palette pulls the look together.
Tuck office gear behind closed doors. Let’s face it: Printers aren’t the most attractive office products out there. If you’re unable to keep yours completely out of sight, steal a trick from Aly Morford: Set it inside a cabinet that also has room for a stash of ink with stacks of paper nearby. “Put the things you use most frequently within arm’s reach or on a lower shelf, and stuff you rarely use higher up,” she says.
Put hooks at kid level. Every member of Camille Styles’s family has a designated spot for their belongings, thanks to this California Closets design. Hooks for coats and backpacks along with personal shoe drawers help keep clutter at bay. “There’s a reason Montessori classrooms are so tidy all the time,” notes Styles, editor in chief of Camille Styles, a lifestyle website.

EASY CLEANING
Spectacular Sprays
Do I need to add rinse aid if my dishwasher detergent already includes it? — MICHELE H.
A: Yes, I still recommend it. Detergent with rinse aid in the formula is effective at minimizing spotting and filming and helping eliminate food residue during the cleaning portion of the cycle, but these ingredients can be washed away when the dishwasher drains. Adding a separate rinse aid, like GH Seal star Cascade Power Dry, to the chamber beside the one where you place the detergent guarantees that the rinse aid gets dispensed during the rinse cycle, when it’s most effective. It will help remove any remaining bits of food from dishes and glassware, eliminate spotting and filming and improve drying. Using a separate rinse aid is especially important if you live in an area with hard water. Many dishwasher models have settings inside the reservoir to regulate how much rinse aid is dispensed. It’s always best to check your machine’s manual to determine which setting is best for your water’s hardness level. And don’t forget to check your control panel for a light or message to alert you when it’s time to add more rinse aid.
Q Why do carpet stains reappear? A: Few things are more frustrating than a carpet stain that looks gone after you tackle it only to mysteriously return soon afterward. This often happens when you’ve erased the stain from the surface but failed to deal with the portion of the stain that’s trapped or hidden in the carpet pile. As the carpet dries, stain remnants near the backing can wick up to the surface and become visible.
To prevent this, follow these steps: 1. Work the carpet cleaner into the base of the fibers, rinse and blot. 2. Fold a sheet of paper towel into quarters and place it on top of the area. 3. Weigh it down with a heavy pot or vase and leave it overnight— any leftover stain will be absorbed by the paper towel.
34
— RENEE O.
4. When it’s dry, toss the dirty towel and fluff the tufts. Another possible reason a carpet may get soiled again quickly is that you are using too much cleaner or not fully rinsing it out; sudsy residue attracts dust from the air and dirt from shoes. It’s best to avoid saturating a stain with carpet cleaner. Instead, spritz a cloth with cleaner, then tackle the stain and rinse well.

That’s because kinder communities — ones that allow for fair access to things like housing, education and health care — help us live longer, healthier lives, says Dr. Harding, who wrote a book on the topic, The Rabbit Effect: Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier With the Groundbreaking Science of Kindness. The COVID-19 pandemic is just one stark example of this paradigm: Disadvantaged communities that haven’t received the same consideration (financial and otherwise) as wealthier ones have faced much higher tolls from the deadly virus. This is true on an individual level as well, research shows. Our bodies work better when our lives are filled with more empathy and kindness. It doesn’t make us immune to the stressors and dangers around us, Dr. Harding explains, but “kindness helps us do better mentally and physically with whatever illness or other adversity shows up.”
YOUR BODY ON KINDNESS
Kindness isn’t just a happy-face emoji or a cherry-on-top thing. Thanks to the cooperation and collaboration it fosters, kindness is one of the main reasons people have been able to survive and thrive in communities for thousands of years. It also seems more important than ever given the challenges we’re facing today, from climate change to racial and economic injustice, according to Kelli Harding, M.D., M.P.H., an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. In fact, she says, kindness “might be the critical issue facing our world right now.” 42
G H MARCH 2022
It makes sense that when someone kindly holds the door open for us, we benefit by not getting smacked in the face with the door. But research suggests that practicing kindness also significantly improves our own physical well-being. Even after researchers account for differences in factors like age, gender, education, personality and mental health, studies show that kinder behavior is linked to having fewer health problems — such as heart disease, sleep disorders and even hearing loss — and to greater longevity. Studies have also found that being kind can help lower blood pressure and anxiety. Helping others even lessened symptoms of depression in people who had lost a spouse. Experiments show that doing something kind for someone is more likely to boost your mood and lower your stress than doing something for yourself. Plus, a recent sweeping review of data from nearly 200,000 research participants around the world found that prosocial behavior (things like donating money to charity, volunteering and spontaneously helping out) was linked to better physical and mental health. What makes these acts of kindness so powerful? Think of life partly as a series of choices. “Each small daily choice we make either nurtures our emotional well-being or aggravates stress, and that helps or hinders our physical health,” Dr. Harding says. Practicing kindness is on the helping side of that equation. The precise connection to our physical
REAL-LIFE health isn’t known, but we do know that kindness triggers a neurochemical response, says Waguih IsHak, M.D., a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and editor of The Handbook of Wellness Medicine. When we do something nice for someone else, oxytocin and dopamine (feel-good hormones) are released in our bodies, and levels of cortisol (a hormone related to stress) fall. There’s also evidence that kindness affects our genes. Our DNA is the blueprint for our cells as they replicate over the course of our lives. Diet, exercise and smoking all affect how well that blueprint gets translated into new cells — and whether genes linked to heart disease or cancer get activated. But kindness and other social factors in our environments impact that process as well, Dr. Harding says. Studies suggest that things like feeling socially isolated, not having someone who shows affection to you and feeling discriminated against (all examples of unkindness) hamper it.
KINDNESS + EMPATHY = TURBOCHARGED BENEFITS One way to amplify the effects of kindness on your health is to understand how it connects with empathy — feeling what someone else is feeling (such as being upset when a friend is upset over a breakup, though it has no direct bearing on your life). Empathy isn’t necessary to be kind (you might donate to your niece’s school fundraiser out of obligation rather than because you feel for her in her desire to collect money for a field trip). Though related, empathy can be a strong motivator for kind behavior and can make kind actions more powerful, explains Jamil Zaki, Ph.D., an associate professor in the department of psychology at Stanford University who researches the neuroscience of how people connect with and care for one another. Zaki’s research has shown that people tend to feel happier and less stressed after they have done something kind for a friend — and those benefits are greatest on days when they also report empathizing with a friend. For instance,

Notice how well you play with others. Did you react too quickly to your cousin’s social media post? Were you prompted to post a negative response because someone else did? Pay attention to your patterns. Take a pause. Rushing leads us to feel stressed, which makes it difficult to practice empathy and kindness. Avoid looking at social media when you don’t have time to sit and digest everything you’re reading. Try to see it their way. Consider the situation from the other person’s point of view. What led them to do what they did or think the way they do? If you find it hard to humanize the poster, it’s better to disengage: Just put your phone away and do another activity. Create kind habits. Regularly make an effort to send a Facebook message to a friend who is struggling, give a genuine compliment to a person on your Instagram feed or tweet at someone well-known to tell them you appreciated the book they wrote or speech they gave.

ACTS OF KINDNESS Get inspired by these stories from women who were blown away by others’ good deeds. “My late brother, Jack, had his name inscribed on the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Colorado, and there was a dinner for the families. It happened to be on Jack’s birthday, and I was alone. While getting ready at my hotel for this very emotional event, I realized I’d forgotten to pack my hairbrush. I was so upset, and the driver on the shuttle bus to the dinner heard me telling someone. She insisted on dropping everyone off, then taking me to a store and waiting for me to buy a brush. I could never thank her enough— she made everything OK.” — Debbie Jeffries, 59, Fitchburg, MA “Years ago at a career fair, I lost my wallet with my driver’s license, credit cards and cash. I frantically retraced my steps but had no luck finding it. About a week later, I received a FedEx package containing my wallet — untouched, with every cent intact! There was a heartwarming message from a complete stranger too. I still remember how I felt: that there were good people in the world who would go out of their way to help.” — Guri Mehta, 46, San Jose, CA “I smiled at an elderly woman on the street, and later we both ended up in the library. She said, ‘You know, I have to tell you this: Your smile made my day.’ Her kindness made my heart soar! I was reminded of something someone once told me: ‘Thinking of a compliment and not saying it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it.’ It helps me remember that we all have power to turn someone’s day around.” — Audrey Lin, 33, Berkeley, CA — as told to Lisa Mulcahy

picking up your friend’s kid at day care when she works late is an act of kindness, but if you empathize with how stressed your friend is, you might feel better emotionally as a result. Other studies have found that when people give to charity and think their money has had a positive impact on others, the emotional benefits of that spending increase. Volunteering seems to have a similar effect. In one study, people who volunteered tended to live longer than those who didn’t — but not when they volunteered for “self-oriented” reasons (like taking advantage of an employer’s offer of a free day off for volunteering). Beyond the mental health benefits, empathy can also help us be kind to people when we might not normally be inclined to do so.
For instance, if a coworker is difficult to work with, empathizing with hardships they’re experiencing at home might motivate you to pick up coffee for them on your way to work or lend a hand with a project they’re working on. If that sounds like a stretch, remind yourself that being kind doesn’t mean you’re letting other people walk all over you or that you can’t set boundaries when you’re asked to help and you’re tapped out. It also doesn’t mean never getting angry or having negative emotions. Kindness is a matter of treating others with dignity and respect even when you disagree with them. And in the process of creating a more enjoyable environment for everyone around you, you could lower your own stress levels and boost your well-being.

What if your calendar glitches and you miss your important work meeting? What if the other kids at school crush your quirky child’s spirit? What if everything you imagine could go wrong actually does? If you’re one of the 40 million U.S. adults who have an anxiety disorder, what-ifs like these may be right at home in your brain. We all feel anxious on occasion, and living in an imagined future in which potential catastrophe (minor and major) awaits is exhausting. “Our worries can intrude on our everyday tasks and can take us out of the present moment,” says New York City clinical psychologist Ernesto Lira de la Rosa, Ph.D. When you feel your anxiety rising, try one or more of these tricks to dial it down.
Brainstorm categories.
Use the 3-3-3 rule. Also known as the 5-4-3-2-1 rule, this is about engaging your five senses to bring you out of your anxious ruminations and ground you in the present. Whichever counting method you use, the idea is the same: “Look around the room and name five things you can see, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste,” says Michele Goldman, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist and a media advisory group member for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation. If you’re by yourself, try naming the things you notice out loud to really remind yourself that nothing alarming is happening now.
Pick a topic — ’80s bands, ice cream flavors, anything that gets your brain chomping — and name all the items you can think of in that category. “The more you enjoy the category, the more it will help shift the anxiety and distract from the triggering situation,” says Goldman.
Douse yourself with cold water. If your anxiety has really taken the reins, a shock to your system can help you grab them back. Both Goldman and de la Rosa recommend taking a cold shower, holding some ice cubes or even running ice water over your wrists. “This is helpful with intense and very physical manifestations of anxiety,” Goldman notes, as it forces your body to focus on the cold — and takes your attention away from the imagined stressors.
Walk it out. Moving your body can help defuse anxious energy as well as release tension, de la Rosa explains. Research shows that exercise can significantly reduce anxiety symptoms in the moment and may even make you more resilient when facing difficult emotions over time. Even a 10- to 15-minute lap around the block helps. If that walk can be in nature, all the better: A walk through the forest lowered participants’ feelings of tension, anger, hostility and depression and increased their positive feelings compared with a city stroll, found a 2018 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Swap in another emotion. Switch on a soothing meditation, crack open a thriller or tap play on a gut-busting YouTube video to trade anxious thoughts for more pleasant or otherwise absorbing ones that change your emotional state. “When we genuinely laugh, we will feel less anxious, even if just for a moment,” Goldman says. The same applies for redirecting your emotional energy into something that really captures your attention, whether it’s comedy or true crime.
Busting the Gut Myths Digestive issues can feel isolating, making it harder to get trusted information and support. Know the truth behind some common misconceptions to stay on track in your health journey. MYTH 1
Yogurt has all the probiotics you need. The truth is, few yogurts naturally contain a probiotic strain. While some yogurts do have added probiotics, the specific strains used to make them don’t provide benefits to humans. To get specific health benefits from those few probiotic yogurts, you’d likely need to eat multiple cups each day.
MYTH 2
More probiotics are better.
Why Go Pro(biotic)?: A Beginner’s Guide To consistently see benefits, understanding how to choose and use probiotics is key. Common issues such as diet, schedule changes, travel, and stress can disrupt the natural balance of good bacteria that are essential for many vital body functions, including healthy digestion.
A daily probiotic supplement like Align can help support your digestive system with an extra boost of healthy bacteria so you can better tackle the everyday challenges of life.
Effectiveness depends on the strain. Bifidobacterium 35624 TM , Align’s flagship strain in 24/7 Digestive Support, can help relieve occasional abdominal discomfort, gas, and bloating.*

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. §Fortifies your digestive system with good bacteria 24/7 with continued daily use.* ‡ Among doctors who recommended a brand of probiotic in ProVoice 2021 survey.
Not necessarily. The amount of bacteria needed for a probiotic supplement to provide a health benefit depends on the specific strain it contains. For example, Align 24/7 Digestive Support*§ is made with 1 billion CFUs, which has been shown to be an effective level to provide the desired health benefits. Essentially, you don’t need billions more bacteria in your gut to do the job that 1 billion can do.
MYTH 3
Probiotics start working immediately. It often takes 2–4 weeks to start feeling the benefits of probiotics, so stick with it! Remember that continued daily use is necessary to maintain your probiotic benefits over time.

Living with this disease isn’t easy, but it revealed a resilience I didn’t know I had and taught me the true meaning of empathy

My mouth felt as if it were full of cotton balls, and my head was pounding. “You can’t leave until you give yourself an injection,” the doctor told me. I stared at her with equal parts disbelief, defiance and horror. How could I, who dreaded even routine blood draws, stab myself with a needle, even if that injection would save my life? That day, after a year of looking for the cause of my near-constant headaches, unquenchable thirst and overall exhaustion, I became, at age 20, one of the nearly 1.6 million people living with type 1 diabetes in the United States and one of
64,000 people diagnosed each year. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels. Specifically, this type of diabetes develops when the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are destroyed by the body’s immune system; what causes the body to attack itself this way is still being researched. (Type 2 diabetes, the most common type, occurs when the body doesn’t properly use the insulin it makes.) As I sat in that doctor’s office, the world around me seemed to stop. While the words left her mouth, with my mother MARCH 2022 G H

silently crying beside me, I found my resolve to give myself a shot of insulin shrinking to the size of a needle tip. But what choice did I have? Eight years later, I’ve come a long way: I’ve mostly overcome my fear of needles — pricking your fingers at least twice a day, every day, will do that! But I’ve also realized that there’s so much more that goes into keeping myself alive. People living with type 1 diabetes make an estimated 180 decisions per day about management of the disease in addition to doing everything else in their lives. Those choices and responsibilities begin as soon as I open my eyes each day.
L i f e + H e a lt h / E SSAY
I start each morning by checking two dev ices , a n insu lin pump a nd a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), that are attached to my body. I’m privileged to be able to afford these tools — many people in the U.S. can’t. The pump holds the insulin I’ll need for three to four days; it administers a programmed dose of the lifesaving liquid every hour as well as the additional insulin I need when I eat. Unlike the bodies of people who don’t have diabetes, mine does not naturally produce insulin, the hormone that allows glucose to enter the cells to provide energy. I change out the pump every few days. The CGM, a device about the size of a tube of lipstick that I place on my stomach and change every 10 days, measures glucose levels via a thin wire that sits between the layers of the skin. Every five minutes it transmits a reading to my cell phone via Bluetooth, so I can see my blood sugar level in real time. The insulin pump and the CGM connect through an app, talking to each other through what’s called a closed-loop system, to keep me alive. Each morning I wake up and prick my finger to check that my CGM is reading accurately. Next, I open the insulin pump app on my phone and type in a carbohydrate estimate for my breakfast. My pump then calculates how much insulin I need and administers it through a tiny tube inside the pump called a cannula. But food isn’t the on ly thing that Author Emily Goldman is a senior editor at our affects my insulin sister brand Prevention. levels — stress, exercise, my menstrual cycle, dehydration and even a cold can have an impact on my blood sugar. Any sickness — especially COVID-19 — could send my body into a period of greater resistance or sensitivity to insulin. I check my blood sugar frequently, doing finger pricks twice a day and looking at CGM readings on my phone about 10 times a day. I check based on how I feel, whether I’m eating and my activity level — all of which vary hour by hour. After breakfast I head to work, which these days often means signing in on my
laptop. Before the pandemic, I’d always have to factor in my walk to the subway station (and eat something sweet if my blood sugar was going low), silence my phone if a low- or high-glucose alert sounded during a meeting (sometimes I’d have to excuse myself to quickly eat a sugary snack then too) and/or scarf down a piece of candy before running to the subway to go home. Now, on days when I do go to the office, I make sure my coworkers know what to do in case I have a diabetic emergency, which makes a lovely first impression: “Hi, my name is Emily, and I’m diabetic — please inject me using this intimidating syringe of glucose if I pass out!” Once I get home, I often have to eat a sugary snack again, as my blood sugar tends to drop from all the walking, and then I give myself insulin to cover the carbohydrates that usually are part of my dinner (generally a well-balanced plate of chicken, a low-carb veg like broccoli and a starch like couscous) and fight the urge to snack for the rest of the night. If I eat too late and don’t give myself the right amount of insulin, I’ll either have to drink a ton of water before bed (to flush out the glucose) or, more often, snack on some glucose tabs or gummy candies before I fall asleep because I gave myself more insulin than I needed to cover the dinner or dessert I ate. Naturally my blood sugar always seems to drop right after I brush my teeth! For the most part, I’ve adjusted to my daily schedule. But one thing I truly miss about my life before diabetes is spontaneity. Every walk, meal and outing now needs to be planned to some degree. Gone

are the days when I would order sweetand-sour chicken and the only repercussion would be a bit of indigestion. Now, for stable blood sugars, I usually have to “prebolus,” which is essentially giving myself insulin and letting it marinate for about 10 to 15 minutes so it has time to work before I eat carbohydrates. Thrilling, I know. The timing can be tricky. If I’m at a restaurant, for instance, and the food takes a lot longer to come than I’ve anticipated, the situation could become serious — fast. Since my body doesn’t produce its own insulin or glucose, it can’t regulate my blood sugar. If I give myself insulin and the food doesn’t come soon enough afterward, I could experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which could cause confusion, lack of coordination and seizure in rare cases if left untreated. If I don’t give myself enough insulin, I could ultimately go into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a condition in which there is not enough insulin in the blood and the body begins to break down fat as fuel. Like many things in life, it’s all about balance.

How to Help in a Diabetic Emergency First recognize the signs, then act quickly.
High Blood Sugar (HYPERGLYCEMIA) • • • • •
Since I rely on medication to keep me alive every hour of every day and will for the rest of my life, living isn’t cheap for me — especially with insulin prices at a record high. Without insurance, one vial of insulin is around $275. I use anywhere from one to three vials — costing up to $900 before insurance — a month. But I’m lucky: Americans who don’t have medical insurance, or who have plans that cover just the bare minimum, often must choose between groceries and insulin. Paloma Kemak, a type 1 diabetic known as glitterglucose on Instagram, had to seek insulin outside the U.S. a number of times. “My insurance — as my doctor said, ‘if you can even call it insurance’ — didn’t cover my insulin,” she says. “I was going through a divorce, dealing with insurance, but seeing the insulin supply in my fridge dwindle. Since I live in Arizona, Mexico isn’t too far, so I made the drive. $300-plus vs. $40? Yes, please.” According to the journal ar ticle “Economic Costs of Diabetes in the U.S. in 2017,” people with diabetes incurred medical costs 2.3 times as high as those without the disease did that year. On average, they spent around $16,750 on medical bills — and that’s just an average. For those who are insulin dependent (as are all type 1 diabetics and some type 2’s), the price is likely much higher. According to the Health Care Cost Institute, in 2016 individuals with
type 1 diabetes spent an average of $5,705 on insulin. That doesn’t include supplies like blood sugar test strips, oral medications and more. Thankfully, the U.S. recently introduced legislation that, if passed, would help mitigate costs for all insured diabetics who use insulin. But until there’s a price cap on insulin for everyone, not just the insured, people will continue to ration the drug, and some will even die because of that.
Low Blood Sugar (HYPOGLYCEMIA)
My Surprising Strength Looking back at the days just after my diagnosis, I can’t help but be in awe of myself. I moved 1,000 miles away from home, faced my fear of needles head-on and dealt with highs and lows — of both my blood sugar and my emotions. But it’s easy to see the toll this disease has taken on my body: Just look at my scars from past insulin pump sites, my callused fingers from countless finger pricks and the exhaustion from overall lack of sleep (high and low blood sugars don’t happen just during the day). The disease can be overwhelming, but I’m no longer consumed by it. I’ve come to terms with the fact that my diabetes isn’t going away. Besides, it has brought me so much, taught me so much. Not only have I made many friends in the diabetes community, but I’ve learned that whether it’s a fear of needles or a big medical bill, you never know what battle another person is facing.

You can pop some vitamin B 12 for a quick energy boost.
Magnesium supplements eliminate muscle cramps, cure anxiety and prevent insomnia.
Turmeric can replace anti-inflammatories like aspirin and other NSAIDs.
The real story: Not unless you’re deficient in it. Vitamin B12 is involved in many functions in the body, and common signs of deficiency include fatigue, anemia and tingling and numbness in hands and feet, which is why a supplement can make someone who isn’t getting enough B12 feel better. It’s also found in fish, poultry, meat, eggs and dairy, so vegans or vegetarians might not get enough without pills; deficiency can also occur in people over 50 because absorption often becomes less efficient with age.

While it has been touted by some experts as helpful for alleviating cramps, anxiety and insomnia, more scientific evidence is needed to support these claims. There is some research, however, that indicates that magnesium supplementation may help improve insomnia in elderly people.
The takeaway: If you’re on a plant-based diet and/or over age 50, get your vitamin B12 levels checked periodically. Good food sources include dairy and fortified plant milk, fortified nutritional yeast (it tastes nice and cheesy on popcorn) and GH Nutritionist Approved Eggland’s Best Cage Free Eggs.
The takeaway: Incorporate more foods into your diet that are rich in magnesium (like pumpkin seeds, roasted nuts, black beans, cooked spinach, salmon, oatmeal, avocado and dark chocolate that’s 70% cacao or higher). the turmeric root, is the active compound in this spice, and it does have anti-inflammatory benefits, which is why some doctors suggest it for arthritis. But right now research doesn’t back the idea of subbing the spice for aspirin or other NSAIDs. That’s because it likely would be difficult to get enough curcumin through food alone for it to be as effective as these medications, and the jury is still out on the safety of taking massive amounts of supplements (which generally are not regulated by the FDA).

A major pain point of setting up smart home tech is that devices from different brands may not always work together. The main options are Google Home (good for Android users), Amazon Alexa (has a wide array of products) and Apple HomeKit (makes sense if you own an iPhone).

First, you need high-speed Internet with enough broadband to handle dozens of devices — at least 200 Mbps (megabits per second). Then make sure a strong Wi-Fi signal reaches every corner of the house. A mesh router with satellites is the easiest solution. For large houses, put in additional access points by running an Ethernet cable from your router to any dead zones.
Some smart devices have built-in battery backup, but you’ll need the Internet to control them. That’s why we recommend investing in a UPS battery backup (starting at around $100) and plugging your router and modem into it. That will keep your home’s Wi-Fi running for several hours; some systems include extra power packs to help in the event of an extended blackout.

Certain safeguards are needed to keep intruders out of your connected devices.
Are smart speakers always listening?
How can I keep my computers safe?
How often should my Wi-Fi be upgraded?
Alexa is listening all the time — but so is your smartphone. We give up some privacy when we bring these connected gadgets into our lives. The key is following the best cybersecurity practices. Start by creating a strong, unique password for each device. I recommend using a password manager like Dashlane (never keep passwords on your computer).
The best thing you can do is called segmentation, creating one network for your computer and a separate guest network for your smart home devices. That way even if someone hacks into your Wi-Fi–connected camera or doorbell, they can’t access your computer. Segmentation is easy to do with most new routers. Check the user manual for instructions.
Generally speaking, it’s good cyber hygiene to replace any network hardware at least every five years to make sure your security protections are relatively up-to-date. It’s also important to keep existing hardware current by enabling software updates. That might mean logging on to the device and manually accepting updates, as you might with your phone.

How can connected technology improve sleep? Smart bulbs can be programmed to match the color temperature of sunlight — warmer during morning and evening hours and cooler through the day. This so-called circadian lighting can help promote sleep. So can smart mattresses like the Sleep Number 360 smart bed, a GH Seal holder. The dualchamber design is great for couples with different firmness preferences. And testers liked getting regular feedback on how well they slept through the night.

Integrators, also known as technologists, will set up your smart home for you — for a price. We caught up with one to find out more about the industry and what the future may hold.
Do I need an integrator? We can definitely make your smart home life easier. Our customers will spend $2,500 to $5,000 on a suite of devices — say, a lock, lights, thermostats, cameras and a sound system. Then there’s the $5,000-to$10,000-and-up customer who wants a whole-house experience: entertainment, security and climate controlled through one app. You’re getting an experience designed for your needs as well as the peace of mind of knowing it will work seamlessly.
How has the pandemic affected your business?
What’s the next big thing in smart homes?
The demand is greater than ever, especially with so many people working from home. It’s supply that’s the problem. So much of this equipment uses chip-based sensors, and that supply chain is backed up well into 2022. My advice to customers is to think ahead. Even if the job is something simple, like installing wireless speakers, it might be a few months before I can get my hands on the amplifier and receiver.
My money is on aging in place. With the use of tiny, noninvasive sensors placed discreetly throughout the home, it’s possible to keep tabs on an older loved one’s daily routines. Let’s say Mom always gets up at 6 a.m., but now it’s 8 a.m. and she’s still in bed. That could be an issue. Likewise, if Dad is suddenly getting up multiple times during the night to use the bathroom, that could be a sign of something.
Are smart homes healthier? They can be. One way is with digital air monitors, which alert you to air pollutants like carbon monoxide and radon. There are also sensors that communicate with a home’s ventilation system — e.g., telling it to bring in more fresh air when high levels of smoke or chemicals are detected.

GH Home Improvement Lab
GH HOME IMPROVEMENT LAB
DAN DICLERICO HOME IMPROVEMENT & OUTDOOR DIRECTOR
The GH Institute’s renovation and outdoor pros answer your most pressing questions to keep your home humming happily — and to save you money and unnecessary headaches
Q How can I improve my home’s air quality during the pandemic and allergy season? — KALEIGH K.
Q How can I check my home’s exterior for damage caused by winter weather? — JEN L.
A: Rain, sleet and snow can really wreak havoc on your home, and roofs and decks are major areas of concern because they’re so exposed to the elements. But even if you live in a mild region, check your deck annually — roughly half of the 60 million decks in the U.S. are in need of repair or replacement, according to the North American Deck and Railing Association. For roofs, the freeze-thaw cycle can cause cracks and openings through which water can penetrate during the rainy spring seasons. Our checklist below will help you identify the best ways to deal with your home’s key trouble spots.
D EC K
ROOF
Do a visual check. Look for splinters, which you’ll need to sand down; popped fasteners, which should be hammered or screwed back in; and rotten boards, which should be replaced. If there’s any sign of sagging or loose connection in the ledger board, where the deck attaches to the house, call in a pro to make the structural repair.
Deal with ice dams. If, during the winter, you noticed snow piling up at the edge of the roof, you’ve got ice dams, which can lead to serious leaks. Dams are usually the result of having insufficient attic insulation, which causes snow to melt on the upper section of roof but not at the unheated edge. Adding more insulation should keep the roof from heating up next winter.
Clean the surface. A stiff-bristled brush can help remove sap or tough stains, and a pressure washer is helpful for blasting away dirt, mildew and stuck-on leaves. Be sure to wear protective gear — including goggles, earplugs, closed-toe shoes and gloves — when operating one.
Check for damage. On a clear day, scan the roof for loose or missing shingles. If your roof has already sprung a leak, there may be evidence inside in the form of water-stained ceilings and walls. Water can travel behind walls to lower levels of your home, so you might have to do a bit of detective work to find the source.
Refinish as needed. Wait for dry weather above 50°F to apply stain. A semitransparent formula (not clear or solid) is a good choice for most wood decks. Our experts like Behr’s Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer ($40, homedepot.com) for its combination of value and performance.
Inspect the gutters. Look for places where the gutter is pulling away from the house. If you have gutter guards, make sure they’re secure. If not, consider investing in a surface-tension version, like Good Housekeeping Seal holder LeafGuard (leafguard.com for price estimate), which lets water in through a narrow gap while sending debris to the ground.

GH

irritant-free, manage issues at the source. On high-pollencount days, keep windows closed, leave shoes at the door and take a shower before bed. Regular vacuuming is also critical during allergy season. In GH tests, our cleaning experts found that vacuums with HEPA filters captured the most particulates. Wash bedding weekly in hot water to kill dust mites. Use a dehumidifier to keep humidity below 60%—the point above which mold thrives, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. If you don’t have an air purifier, consider getting one; the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier ($250, amazon .com) performed best in our recent test. Finally, to better understand how well these measures are working, consider an air-quality monitor. I like the Airthings Wave Plus ($230, airthings.com), a battery-powered device that measures humidity, airborne chemicals, CO2 and more. Data is sent to an app, along with other info like air-quality alerts and homemaintenance reminders. See more of our top-rated air purifiers at goodhousekeeping .com/airpurifiers.

Q Any tips for picking a good air mattress?
Q I keep hearing about machinewashable rugs. Are they worth buying? — VICTORIA N.
GH LAB PICK: RUGGABLE KAMRAN HAZEL RUG, $459 FOR 8' × 10', RUGGABLE.COM
pets or guests coming over, a washable rug provides peace of mind, since it can be thoroughly cleaned after a big mess. These innovative floor coverings typically have a low pile, meaning they are flatter and don’t feel as plush as other rugs. They’re best for high-traffic areas or places where spills are common, like living or dining rooms. After testing multiple brands, the GH Textiles Lab gives top marks to Ruggable rugs, which come in a range of designs and sizes. They offer a unique two-layer system with an underpad topped with a removable cover that can be detached for a trip through the washer and dryer. GH Lab Tips: When shopping for one, first double-check that the listing says machine-washable—some rugs are labeled just as washable, but that can mean hand-washing or professional cleaning. Next, consider size: While most rugs are compatible with standard washing machines, a larger one will require a higher-capacity machine. To avoid wear and tear, launder rugs as infrequently as possible—we recommend vacuuming and spot-cleaning for day-to-day upkeep. Save machine-washing for when heavy-duty cleaning is needed.
are rain boots always Q Why so difficult to put on? Help!
GH LAB PICK: BOGS RAINBOOT MAGNOLIA, $65, BOGSFOOTWEAR.COM
A: Rain boots are designed to keep feet dry in wet weather, and their fully enclosed design can certainly create a hassle when it’s time to slip them on and off. You may notice that very few effective rain boots have laces or zippers, because those would create openings through which water could seep. If you’re fed up with a cumbersome pair, try shorter boots with tabs at the

openings or ones with easy-to-pull features. Footwear brand Bogs carries unique rain boots for men, women and kids with wide built-in handles that are strategically placed to allow for easy maneuvering without sacrificing efficacy. Regardless, make sure your rain boots are made with fully waterproof materials (like rubber) and have deep treads on the bottom for traction.
G H MARCH 2022
A: A blow-up bed doesn’t mean you or your guests need to sacrifice sleep quality. Here’s how to choose an air mattress that maximizes comfort and convenience: Check the air chambers. Vertical air coils are more supportive and distribute weight better than horizontal air beams, which look like rows on the surface and are more likely to sag. Pick the right height. An air mattress at least 18" high is most comfortable and easiest to get onto and off of. On the flip side, a lower-profile one is more compact to store at home or carry with you on the go. Opt for “flocked” fabric. This skid-resistant material looks like suede. You can find it on the top of the mattress to avoid the feel of plastic as well as on the bottom to prevent slipping on the floor. Consider the pump. Most air mattresses come with a pump for inflation, but you sometimes must purchase one separately. Pumps can be manual or battery-operated or plug into an outlet. GH textiles pros were blown away by this case’s durability, especially its earning the highest score in our fabric strength tests. At-home users loved how comfortable it felt to sleep on, with one saying, “I liked the soft texture.” Testers also noted its temperature regulation and cooling feel, and they said they woke up in the morning without skin creases.
This model stood out for looking as good as new after repeated wash cycles—a huge feat for silk fabric. Even better, it was a tester favorite, with a perfect score for comfort and high ratings in other areas like smoothness and bedhead prevention. Testers also noted that it felt substantial on their pillows: “Just perfect, not too light or too heavy,” raved one.
Don’t let the low price fool you: This one earned perfect scores in both Lab abrasion tests that mimic hair moving around overnight and consumer smoothness ratings. While it wasn’t as strong as others and showed some signs of wear after washing, its durability ratings were still good overall. Testers unanimously raved about its chilling effect, with one saying, “I liked how it was cool to the touch.”

G H MARCH 2022
The smoothness of silk reduces friction for less hair frizz and fewer skin creases, which can help prevent wrinkles in the long run. Plus, it’s naturally temperatureregulating, good for “hot” sleepers. Here’s how to shop like a GH Institute pro: Choose Mulberry silk. 1 Its fibers are longer and more uniform than others, making the fabric smoother and more durable. GH Lab tip: Polyester satin fabric, often described as “silky,” costs less but doesn’t feel as luxurious as real silk. Look for at least 2 22 momme. Fabric weight (listed as momme or mm) typically ranges from 15 to 30, but fabrics for which it’s 22 or higher are more substantial and perform best in our tests. Be wary of marketing 3 that overpromises. Dermatologists confirm that silk can prevent bedhead and wrinkles, but don’t trust unrealistic claims like fewer breakouts, skin nourishment and anti-aging benefits. Opt for machine4 washable. Being able to throw a case in the washer is crucial if you sleep on it daily. Follow the care instructions on the label.

Pamper your pores with Mary Kay’s Clear Proof Deep-Cleansing Charcoal Mask, a Good Housekeeping Beauty Award winner. Its activated charcoal and mineral clays absorb oil, and honeysuckle botanical extracts help even out skin tone over time. This powerful formula stands out for its ability to leave skin deeply cleansed and refreshed without overdrying, per our Beauty Lab experts.
Hit refresh on your shower space with Bath Planet acrylic wall surrounds, which provide a quick and convenient face-lift and are resistant to fading, chipping and cracking. The company’s Reveal lineup features six unique laser-engraved grout patterns with choices like custom honeycomb shapes and marble designs. Acrylic provides insulation that will keep water hot up to four times as long as steel or cast iron.
Your bathroom haven just got cozier, thanks to Home Depot’s StyleWell towel set. Made from 100% cotton, these towels are luxuriously fluffy and retain their softness after each wash. Plus, with their medium weight and hollow-core-loop design, they offer good absorbency without feeling too heavy. The six-piece set includes two bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths, but you can opt for a 12- or an 18-piece set.
LAB RESULTS During consumer tests, panelists confirmed that the clay mask left both dramatically clarified skin and deeply cleansed pores. Those with oily and combination skin types can rejoice in the fact that the formula reduced sebum by 89% and visual shine by 84% in under 15 minutes, as a clinical study showed.
LAB RESULTS Our engineering pros love that you get the visual effect of real tile without the necessary upkeep. Since acrylic is nonporous and the embossed 3D lines provide a smooth edge, Bath Planet’s surrounds are both easy to clean and mold-resistant, according to our expert analysis.
LAB RESULTS With high absorbency scores in our tests, these towels wowed GH fiber scientists with their ability to soak up liquid easily. Their color and shape held up well even after repeated laundering. Q What is a combi-steam oven? I keep hearing about them. — Jesse P.
PULLTEX PULLTAP’S CLASSIC CORKSCREW, $28, PULLTEX.COM
A: A combi-steam oven, which offers both convection and steam cooking, looks like a traditional wall oven but is plumbed or has a refillable water reservoir, and it offers a ton of benefits. Depending on the model, these ovens can cook with different levels of steam and heat—even both simultaneously!—to deliver mouthwatering results like beautifully browned, juicy chicken. They’re also great for delicate desserts like cheesecake and custard—no more cumbersome water baths—and bread, as most can reach low temps for proofing (or letting the dough rise) and high temps for developing a nice crust. Plus, they allow you to skip boiling when making pretzels (like the bites above) and bagels. In addition to being used for baking, they can serve as standalone steamers (great for grains) and work for sous vide cooking. Today, with more people using their kitchens, you can find quality combi-steam ovens made by virtually every luxury appliance brand—from Gaggenau, which was the first to introduce them to the home market in 1999, to GH Seal star Miele. More countertop versions like the Anova Precision Oven ($599, anovaculinary.com) are also making their way to the market, which is likely why you’re hearing about them; they cost less and sometimes take up less space than their built-in counterparts.
Winged Corkscrew

How can I safely puree hot ingredients? It would save me time when making soups and sauces. David T.
A: Traditional and immersion blenders are both great for this — just don’t use a personal blending cup that lacks vents, as steam could build up inside and cause burns when you open it. To blend hot foods safely, follow these steps.* For a traditional blender: Remove the pot of cooked food from the heat. If using a blender with a
—
removable blade, be sure the blade is attached properly. With a slotted spoon or a strainer, transfer solids into the blender jar. Ladle in enough liquid to cover; add more for thinner results, but don’t exceed the maximum fill line for hot foods. Secure all parts of the lid. Start blending on low speed, then slowly increase to high.
92
For an immersion blender: Be sure the pot of cooked food is on a stable surface. Submerge the entire blender head in the food to prevent splattering. Start on low speed, using an up-anddown motion to break up ingredients; gradually increase to high. *Always check manufacturer’s instructions before blending hot foods.

“I really believe that children with a growth mindset become strong problem solvers, know to ask for help, have increased confidence, are persistent and do not shy away from challenges,” says Tasha Brown, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist in New York.
SHIFT THEIR FOCUS
TOPPLE the TROPHIES Teaching kids a growth mindset helps them learn that it’s more important to get better at new things than it is to be the best by MARISA LASCALA
There are always going to be those kids who are obsessed with winning at sports, getting perfect grades on tests or bringing home every trophy. But if kids become so focused on a desired outcome that they shut out everything else, it may mean they’re stuck in a fixed mindset, with which results are the only things that matter. A growth mindset, on the other hand, allows kids to be kinder to themselves while not shying away from new experiences for fear of failure.
WHY GROWTH MATTERS Growth mindset, a term coined by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, Ph.D., “refers to the idea that we can grow with hard work, perseverance and willing ness to go beyond our comfort zone,” says Abigail Gewirtz, Ph.D., author of When the World Feels Like a Scary Place. People with a fixed mindset believe intel ligence, skills and talent are innate. “Kids who have a growth mindset believe hard work pays off — that they can accomplish more with a willingness to put effort into things,” Gewirtz adds. This type of world view can help kids throughout their lives.

ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES When someone adopts a growth mindset, failure is just an opportunity to learn. There’s no better way to prove that than by sharing with your kids that you’ve lived through big challenges of your own. “Tell your child about your mistakes and embarrassing moments when you were younger,” says Kim Parker, L.C.S.W., the author of East Meets West: Parenting From the Best of Both Worlds. “I find that when I share these stories candidly with my teens and preteens, their hearts warm up to me, their minds entertain more possibilities and their spirits are uplifted. They may laugh at me, but that’s OK, because I’m laughing at myself.” Parker says sharing her setbacks has had unintended effects — on her. “When I adopt this mindset,” she says, “I am more humble, easier to teach and generally more pleasant to be around.”

RESET SUCCESS Experts say the adage “It’s not whether you win or lose — it’s how you play the game” benefits kids in the long run.
To transition kids to a growth mindset, pay more attention to the process than to the results. Carlin Barnes, M.D., and Marketa Wills, M.D., M.B.A., the founders of Healthy Minds MD, suggest asking a child what lessons they’ve learned from an activity or assignment rather than praising a grade or telling them something like “You’re so smart!” You can also encourage a child by saying, “You worked really hard in that game, and I’m proud of you!” instead of “Great win today!” Still, kids can get frustrated when faced with a loss, a bombed test or some other upset. When you talk about these things, “use analogies that are reflective of their life experiences,” says LaNail R. Plummer, Ed.D., L.C.P.C., CEO of Onyx Therapy Group. “An example might include climbing steep steps to get to the highest level — the fact that a step is tough doesn’t mean one should get stuck there or choose to go back the other way. It’s about not giving up on ourselves.”

NEIGHBOR For most people, the folks next door are either good friends or total strangers. But the pandemic is changing these relationships.

by LAURIE YARNELL
One day when I was about 9, my mom received a frantic phone call from our next-door neighbor, Mrs. King, who wasn’t home at the time. She had been trying to reach the babysitter who was watching her daughter, and no one was picking up the phone. She had a bad feeling. We ran over to the house and found that they had been locked in a closet by a
burglar! Fortunately, they were unharmed. We didn’t socialize with the Kings regularly, though occasionally I played with their daughter, but we knew we could count on one another for everyday help — and in emergencies. Interactions like these in my 1960s childhood in suburban New York informed my behavior as an adult. I like to know my neighbors, even if just casually. But this type of relationship may be

waning: According to a 2018 Pew Research Center study, a majority of Americans surveyed (57%) reported that they knew some of their neighbors, but only 26% said they knew most of them. And while about two-thirds of respondents who knew some neighbors felt comfortable leaving a set of house keys with them for emergencies, it was pretty uncommon for them to have social get-togethers with those neighbors. According to those who study human

relationships, there are two primary types of social ties — “weak” ones, like, say, your loose connection to a local barista and your kids’ teachers, and strong ones, like those to your closest friends and family. Marissa King, Ph.D., a professor of organizational behavior at Yale School of Management and the author of Social Chemistry: Decoding the Patterns of Human Behavior, says neighbors represent a particularly interesting category spanning the two types of ties. “For about a third of people the neighbor relationship is very strong, and for about a third of people it’s absent altogether,” she says. And yet neighbor relationships represent an essential part of our social fabric and can have an enormous impact on how happy we are living somewhere, she adds.

meet Elise Biederman, who lives on a suburban New York cul-de-sac along with about 10 other families, has grown closer to her neighbors during the pandemic. While they were friendly before, COVID-19 brought their relationships to a whole new level. “We bonded and are now connected more than ever,” she explains. “We went through uncharted territory together.” Everyone was outside a lot more with their kids and dogs, and a neighborhood text chain sprang up to connect everyone with messages alerting members to grocery runs or inviting everyone outside for cocktails. Any minor annoyances, Biederman says, have been far outweighed over the years by the positives of living on such a close-knit street. A 2021 survey done by Buildworld in the United Kingdom says Biederman isn’t alone. Thirty-one percent of respondents said they had gotten to know their neighbors better since the pandemic began, with almost one in five saying that it made them feel better about those living near them. And more than one in three house dwellers reported growing closer with their neighbors during this time. “Generally, we tend to like people more the more we see them,” says King. “During the pandemic,
we all turned more inward, relying on those closest to us socially and physically; for some, that included neighbors.” But not everyone has been so fortunate. One woman we spoke with in the Cleveland area lived in an apartment complex for many years, but that changed when new neighbors moved in. While she gave them a warm welcome, things deteriorated when they flouted leash laws, failed to pick up their dogs’ waste and cursed at her after she approached them about it. Another neighbor threw lit cigarettes off her balcony and onto hers. She eventually moved into a house. “We’ve had almost no dealings directly with any neighbors here,” she says, “which is fine by me.”

Sometimes a situation that at first looks as if it could be problematic turns out to be unexpectedly positive. “A neighbor I initially found somewhat off-putting turned out to be amazing,” says Christina Adams of Laguna Beach, CA. A chain-smoker who often carried around a can of beer lived in an apartment building next to Adams’s new house. But he was a professional chef, and he began dropping off beautifully presented gourmet dishes for Adams and her husband. From there, they bonded over food and cooking, sharing meals and developing a special friendship. “We would never have crossed paths socially, and I never would have had this wonderful opportunity to get to know him, if he didn’t live next door,” Adams says.

THE NEIGHBOR
KEEP IT
Positive Developing a good relationship with a neighbor is much easier than turning around a negative one, says King, so it pays to start off on the right foot. Understand that “small early investments like smiling, waving or chatting may make a big difference later on,” she says. Try to gauge your neighborhood’s general “feel.” In some areas, there may be an understanding that people living in close proximity should respectfully leave each other alone. But if your neighborhood seems like one in which interaction is welcome, consider “simple friendly actions, like walking over to introduce yourself and making eye contact. They can be quite powerful in making a good first impression,” says Amber Trueblood, a licensed marriage and family therapist. Welcome new neighbors by dropping off something small, like cook-
If things do turn sour, bad relationships tend to spiral out from one negative interaction, says King. Should there be an issue, consider writing a note or asking if the two of you can talk. “Someone has to have the humility and the willingness to be the person to reach out in a difficult situation,” says King. “You don’t have to like each other, but you do have to be civil.” If someone seems rude or inconsiderate, it’s very unlikely that the behavior is directed at you, Trueblood says. “Remind yourself that you have no idea what is going on inside someone else’s home,” she adds. “Take a breath, find some compassion and reach out with genuine care to see if you can resolve any misunderstandings or miscommunications.” If the situation with a neighbor is so negative that it takes up a disproportionate amount of your time and energy — and you’ve tried to resolve it — King says sometimes it’s best to let it go and focus

issues like itching or flaking, talk to your vet about a special bathing routine or medicated shampoo.
Do I need to brush their teeth? Yes, ideally you should brush their teeth every day, Machell explains. Not only can dental disease be painful, but bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and cause damage to vital organs such as the liver, kidneys and heart, Joslin notes. Brush their teeth at least a few times a week with a pet-safe enzymatic toothpaste. Dental chew toys can help keep plaque at bay between brushings, and most pets will need professional cleanings now and then too.
Should I use tick/flea medication year-round? Because preventing a flea or tick infestation is easier than getting rid of one, experts recommend using a preventive treatment no matter what the season. A variety of topical, oral and wearable options exist, so talk to your vet about what’s right for your pet based on their lifestyle and the prevalence of pests in your area.

How can I tell if my pet has food allergies?
Top Pet Q’s Both new and longtime dog and cat owners often wonder how to give their furry friends the best possible care. Two experts respond to some common queries.

Do I have to walk my dog every day?
How often do dogs need baths?
A daily stroll is the best way to give your pup’s body and brain a workout, says Sarah Machell, D.V.M., medical director of online veterinary service Vetster. Walking gets their heart rate up, all that sniffing provides lots of mental stimulation and the time together gives the two of you a chance to bond. That said, if a walk’s not in the cards, tossing a ball around the backyard (or the living room) for an energetic game of fetch will work in a pinch.
It depends on your pet’s breed, their lifestyle and whether they have any medical conditions, explains Antje Joslin, D.V.M., Dogtopia veterinary expert. If your pet is fairly sedentary and their fur is not prone to matting, they may need a bath only a few times a year or whenever they get especially dirty. Use only gentle, pet-safe cleansers, as harsh shampoos can strip their skin’s protective oils and leave them open to infection or irritation. If your pet has skin MARCH 2022 G H

“Faces and feet equal food allergy,” explains Machell. Unlike in humans, food allergies in pets often show up as itchiness on the face and paws or frequent ear infections. But because skin and ear irritation can mean lots of different things, ask your vet for allergy testing and diet direction before changing your pet’s food on your own.
How do I choose the right food? When it comes to your dog’s or cat’s diet, the experts caution against trendy or specialized diets unless your vet prescribes one. Puppies and kittens have different nutritional needs than senior pets do, and breed and lifestyle come into play too. “Your veterinarian is going to be the most well suited to help support you in this decision,” Machell explains. And it’s not a one-and-done conversation: Bring up your pet’s eating habits at their regular physical so your vet can help tweak their diet as they age.

Quite possibly. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says 56% of dogs and 60% of cats are overweight or obese, and carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for health problems from joint pain to diabetes. You should be able to see their waist from the top and the side and feel their ribs when you pet them with your fingers, Machell explains. If you can’t, talk to your vet about how to help them shed the extra fat safely.
Why is my cat urinating outside the litter box?
Earn points* for buying BLUE and taking care of your pets
Cats may urinate in inappropriate places for lots of reasons, but Machell says the first step is to make sure there’s not a medical explanation, such as a urinary infection. After ruling out health issues with your vet, look at the environment. Cats can get shy if their litter box is in a high-traffic area, and some dislike covered boxes or certain types of litter. They could also be reacting to upheaval at home.

How can I address bad behavior? “Punishing your animal is never the answer,” Machell says, so resist the urge to put your pet in time-out. Instead, look for the root of the problem and work to address it. Make sure they get lots of physical and mental exercise, are able to socialize with other animals and have a solid routine at home, Joslin advises. For dog owners, she recommends the book Decoding Your Dog by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists as a resource. Working with a reputable trainer can help too.
How often should a pet see the vet? Puppies and kittens will need to see the vet frequently within their first year for vaccinations, spaying or neutering and routine care. Most healthy adult pets should visit the vet every six to 12 months, Joslin says, for a wellness check, annual blood work with a heartworm test and a dental checkup. Senior pets and those with chronic medical conditions or who take medications should see the veterinarian more frequently.
