Weave Fall Flowers Into a Welcome Wreath

Dress up a plain grapevine wreath with an array of blooms and grasses in autumnal hues. Choose a fiery combination of strawflowers, marigolds, carnations and ranunculus, then balance it out with neutral-colored pampas grass and wheat stalks. Created by orchardist Maria Ann “Granny” Smith in the 19th century, this crisp variety is known for its puckery flavor. Here are our Test Kitchen’s favorite ways to eat it:

CRESS SALAD In bowl, whisk together 2 Tbsp each olive oil and white wine vinegar, 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 1/2 tsp each honey and salt and 1/4 tsp pepper. Stir in 1 Tbsp prepared horseradish and 1 shallot (finely chopped). Toss with 2 Persian cucumbers (thinly sliced) and 1 Granny Smith apple (very thinly sliced). Fold in 1 bunch upland cress. Serve with seared steak, pork or chicken.

RUSTIC PIE On parchment, roll 1 refrigerated rolled pie crust to 11 in. and place on baking sheet. In bowl, toss 3/4 lb each Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apples (in 1/2-in. wedges) with 11/2 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 Tbsp flour, 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon and a pinch each of ground nutmeg and salt. Pile on crust, leaving 2-in. border. Fold border over apples; brush with beaten egg. Bake at 375°F until apples are tender, 1 hr.

AVOCADO AND KIWI SALAD In bowl, whisk together 2 Tbsp lime juice, 1 Tbsp olive oil, 1/2 tsp each honey and salt and 1/4 tsp pepper. Stir in 1 jalapeño (thinly sliced). Divide 4 cups arugula, 1 Granny Smith apple (thinly sliced), 1 large kiwi (peeled and sliced) and 1 avocado (sliced) among plates. Sprinkle with 1 scallion (thinly sliced), then drizzle with vinaigrette.

Kindness is free. Let’s sprinkle that stuff everywhere!

Not long ago, I was listening to a podcast about the science of compassion. It detailed a study showing that being on the receiving end of small kindnesses actually has an effect on the brain, making a person more likely to be kind in return —  psychologists call it “the norm of reciprocity.” When I shared these findings with the GH team, it got us thinking: If each of us committed to bringing more acts of kindness into our everyday lives, we could jump-start a cycle toward a kinder, gentler world. We dubbed this the Kind Cycle, inviting readers like you to help us kick off a kindness revolution. And together, we did! I loved hearing from readers about all the different kinds of kind deeds, like treating a Lyft driver to a coffee, surprisecleaning your parents’ bathroom, sending flowers to a colleague for no reason and dropping off meals for those in need. We all inspired one another by sharing our stories on social media (#kindcycle) — and it was such a wonderful way to unite people through a shared goal. More than that, I remember how good the initiative made everyone feel. And I’m not just talking about the folks who ended up with clean bathrooms or fresh flowers — I’m talking about those who did the deeds too. Now, as we approach the holiday season (yes, already, I know!) — and because, let’s be honest, it’s been a year and we could all use some extra joy — I’m thrilled to share that GH is putting a new spin on the Kind Cycle. With this issue, we’re kicking off a 30-Day Giving Challenge for GH+ members ( just flip the page for all the details). If our past experience is any indication, this program is going to change lives! Here’s how it works: Over four weeks, our editors will share exciting ways to give back. This time of year, generosity is in the air. Whether you want to raise money, volunteer or simply show kindness, here are a few ideas to get you started. Join this special program designed exclusively for GH+ members.

1. Shop locally. To support small businesses near you, visit a community holiday fair, a neighborhood coffee shop or a fair-trade store to find gifts unique to your area. 2. Host a fundraiser. Pick a nonprofit or another organization that works on a topic you care about, then raise money by organizing a fun run, throwing a murder mystery dinner party or hosting a virtual concert or poetry reading.

3. Get physical. Pitch in by raking leaves or shoveling snow for a neighbor, helping clean up after a storm, maintaining a community garden, clearing local trails or coaching a youth sports team.

4. Give regularly. Build support into your budget by setting up a recurring donation to an organization whose mission you believe in. Even small amounts given at regular intervals can help groups get by during lean months. 5. Volunteer from home. If you have a computer, an Internet connection and a passion for helping others, you can give back in a variety of ways, like tagging animals in photos for ZSL Instant Wild (instantwild .zsl.org) or helping prepare military

members, veterans and military spouses for careers through Hire Heroes USA (hireheroesusa.org).

6. Prioritize family time. Strengthening your community starts with building up those closest to you. Try some of these ideas to make any day feel special: As a family, collect nonperishable food from your pantry to donate, or take a phone-free walk together after dinner. And you can ask kids to set the table—they will be proud to have contributed to the meal and will start to learn the importance of pitching in.

7. Lead with kindness. A smile, a wave or a simple hello is a free and easy way to give back, and it’s amazing how much a kind word can buoy someone’s spirit.

Vitamin C

Best for: Any skin type, especially skin that’s hyperpigmented, dull or UV-damaged. How to use it: Apply in a leaveon treatment like a serum or cream in the a.m., before SPF.

AntiAgers Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) These heavyhitting ingredients smooth out wrinkles and fine lines by ramping up cellular turnover and collagen production for a more youthful, bright-looking, even-toned complexion. Use consistently for at least eight weeks to see results.

What it does: AHAs are acids like glycolic, lactic and malic acid derived from natural sugars or fruits that exfoliate dull skin and stimulate collagen production to lessen wrinkles, even out skin tone and diminish hyperpigmentation. Best for: Anyone concerned about aging, lackluster skin or uneven tone. How to use it: Start with a lower concentration and work up to daily use as tolerated.

How to use it: Peptides work well with other skincare ingredients, making them easy to incorporate into a routine once to twice daily. Opt for products that are left on skin rather than rinsed off, like moisturizers or serums. Look for an opaque or dark-colored, airtight container and ingredients like vitamin E and ferulic acid to improve stability and efficacy. Vitamin E What it does: An antioxidant and also an anti-inflammatory, vitamin E prevents skin discoloration; protects against damage and signs of aging caused by free radicals; and staves off acne breakouts. Best for: Products formulated with vitamin E work well for most skin types, but it’s particularly helpful for discolored, aging or acne-prone skin. How to use it: People with drier skin can try applying pure vitamin E oil directly to skin once to twice daily. Those with combination and oily skin may want to opt for a product formulated with the ingredient. FYI: Vitamin E appears as “tocopherol” on some ingredient labels. Retinol What it does: A derivative of vitamin A, retinol is the gold standard anti-aging ingredient, with proven effects in clinical studies. Best for: It’s safe for all skin types, but may inflame sensitive or dry skin. How to use it: Apply a leave-on retinol treatment in the evening, two to three alternate nights per week to start, increasing to nightly once skin adjusts. It’s also available at higher concentrations via prescription. FYI: Retinol can cause redness, dryness and peeling at first. Avoid using it with chemical exfoliants. For oily and acne-prone skin, apply daily at concentrations up to 10%; all other skin types, start with two to three times a week. Polyhydroxy Acid What it does: A gentle chemical exfoliant, polyhydroxy acid (PHA) sloughs dead cells from skin’s surface for a smoother and more even texture.

First, know this: Growing your hair longer and thicker takes time. Hair grows about six inches each year on average, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, but that can feel minimal — especially because most people lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. Plus, “hair that’s naturally fine or sparse is genetic,” says Joyce Davis, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City, and the length you can achieve is determined by the amount of time your strands stay in their growth cycle. That said, there are ways to work with what you have to maximize your hair-growth potential: 2 . CO LO R CA REF ULLY. Making drastic color changes to your hair, like going from a darker shade to a light one, could stand between you and your longest possible hair. “When the cuticle, or outer layer, of hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more split ends and breakage,” says Elizabeth Hiserodt, senior colorist at Cutler Salon in New York City. “The fewer chemical treatments you get, the better your hair will grow.” (This includes other types of chemical haircolor, smoothing processes like keratin treatments, hair relaxers and perms.)

It may seem counterintuitive, but if you want longer hair, you need regular cuts (about every eight weeks). “While a haircut doesn’t make your hair grow faster, it gets rid of split ends that break your strands,” says Michael Dueñas, a celebrity hairstylist in Los Angeles. When a split end breaks, it means your hair loses length — as well as volume, smoothness and shine. At the salon, request a “dusting” from your stylist, meaning just the hair’s tips are cut, which gets rid of damaged ends but maintains most of the length.

Growing your longest, strongest strands doesn’t just depend on what you do to your hair; it also has to do with what you put into your body. “To promote hair growth, you need to ‘feed’ the hair from the inside,” says Francesca Fusco, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. Foods high in protein, the building block of hair, can help hair grow faster. Protein can come from meats and plant sources. “Try increasing your protein intake with foods like fish, beans, nuts and whole grains,” Dr. Fusco recommends. Women who don’t get enough protein often experience more hair shedding, she says.

Take care when brushing wet hair. Hair is especially susceptible to breakage when it’s wet. “Water exposure swells and stretches the hair’s shaft, which causes the shingle-like outer layer to lift, and adding stress from brushing in that state can cause it to break,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann. Instead, brush dry hair before shampooing. If you have to detangle it when it’s wet, towel-dry it first so it no longer drips, apply a leave-in conditioner from roots to ends and use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush to reduce friction, working from the ends up in small sections to prevent tearing hair, she advises. It’s easy to assume a hair product is working, but Dueñas recommends taking a closer look — at your scalp. “What the formula is doing to your skin is generally what it’s doing to your hair,” he says. “Does it make your skin feel dry, stripped, heavy, waxy, sticky or greasy? Or does it feel soft, hydrated, silky and supple?” Treat your hair as you treat your skin: If hair follicles are clogged, hair can’t grow as efficiently, so swap products as needed.

13. GET T O T HE RO O T . Underlying causes may be contributing to your hair-growth issues. One in four American women report thinning hair— not counting those born with thin or sparse strands. “Hair loss is often hereditary, or androgenic, thinning and tends to appear as a widening center part,” Dr. Davis says. Another common type is telogen effluvium (TE), or allover shedding because of hormones, as in post-pregnancy, or health issues such as thyroid or autoimmune disease and anemia. With TE, hair generally grows back once the problem is treated; see a doctor for diagnosis. For androgenic loss, try a minoxidil treatment. For all types, at-home low-level laser therapy can work, she says, as can the pro treatment PRP (plateletrich plasma), which stimulates growth with scalp injections of your blood’s growth factors. What’s the best way to clean a vintage area rug that looks a little dingy? — LAURA F.

A: Proceed with caution—because of their age, vintage items are always tricky to care for, especially if they are not in perfect condition. Professional cleaning is best for any valuable area rug, but it can be pricey, and you may be able to improve the look yourself. Start by checking the colorfastness of the dyes. Place a few drops of water on several of the dark colors. Once the water soaks in, press the spots with a clean white cloth. If any color transfers to the cloth, it’s a sign that the dyes could fade with wet cleaning. If that’s the case, give the rug a thorough vacuuming to remove loose dust. If it’s easy enough, flip it over and vacuum the back to push any trapped dirt out onto the floor so you can clean it up. Next, use a powder like Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh Dry Carpet Cleaner ($18, amazon.com); the moist granules absorb dirt without damaging colors. Simply sprinkle on the powder, brush it in, wait at least 30 minutes for the granules to dry, then vacuum. This powder is also a great way to freshen rugs between deep cleanings.

It shuts off automatically, so there’s no fear of overheating, and it can be placed anywhere sans its cord. In our test, it was quiet, the scent level was easy to adjust, it nixed cooking odors and the light emitted a soft glow.

A: Though they sound similar and do some of the same tasks, washing soda and baking soda are different compounds and are not completely interchangeable. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which, along with its gentle household cleaning and odor-removal benefits, is safe to handle, ingest and even use to brush your teeth. Washing soda is sodium carbonate and is for household cleaning only. It’s an ingredient in many laundry detergents, and when you add 1/2 cup to 1 cup to your wash along with your regular detergent, it binds to the hard-water minerals that can leave clothing feeling stiff and looking gray so your detergent can clean, whiten and remove stains better. Washing soda also cuts grease. Use it on a damp sponge to scrub cookware, as a paste on stains or mixed with water to clean stove burners and more. Always wear rubber gloves when handling washing soda, and never use it on aluminum, as it will pit and discolor it.

“As the oldest of five children, I began cooking, cleaning, gardening, needlework and raising my younger siblings long before I had a child of my own. My mother had her hands full and my father was usually absent, so I helped look after the younger children as well as cooking, cleaning, washing up, helping with laundry and ironing, repairing clothes, picking and preserving fruit and vegetables and feeding and butchering the animals. By the time I left school in 1946 to go study domestic science at a teacher-training college in London, I had a good foundation to build upon — besides, it was one of the few courses deemed suitable for girls, and I actually enjoyed the work. After that,

I taught domestic science for two years in North London, including needlework, laundry and ironing, house hygiene and cooking, all skills children would need to keep a home. Lots of the children didn’t come to school at all until late October,

after spending the summer and autumn helping with harvests and picking hops. Then I moved to a school outside London, and after two years there, I went to a military base in Germany and taught the children of soldiers.”

In 1956, I wrote to the Good Housekeeping Institute and told them they didn’t know what they were missing! “Apparently they agreed! They offered me a job straightaway, and I began working in the London offices. In those days the GH Institute was a vital source of information for housewives. Readers wrote in or telephoned with their domestic queries, which could be anything from how to remove a stain from a carpet to how to starch a shirt collar or how to butcher a chicken — anything to do with running a home. “The GH Institute was the best-known place for getting help. I was a sort of domestic ‘Dear Abby,’ part of a team that took phone calls and answered letters about every domestic crisis imaginable. You have to remember there was no Internet, and this was the tail end of rationing. People had to make do and mend. Fitted carpets in particular were precious and costly, so I dealt with many, many carpet inquiries. People wrote with pen and ink then, and ink was always being spilled, so we got a lot of questions about removing ink stains, as well as how to deal with carpet beetle infestations. I spent so long researching the latest cookers that I became an expert on stoves and ovens. I later used this expertise to really go all out on a fantastic range, one of those purchases you never forget.”

My love of cookbooks is connected to my family. “I always loved my mother’s collection. And when I had kids, my fascination continued. My son James had very bad asthma, and every month I had to take him to London to see an asthma specialist. Afterward we would go to a secondhand bookshop and he would look for books about his obsession, Napoleon, and I would go to the cookbook section. On one of those outings, I found a very old, very battered and torn cookbook from the 19th century. The owner of the bookshop said I could get it rebound at a specialist print shop in London. Bit by bit, I began buying very old cookbooks until I had quite a few. The collection eventually numbered almost 200 books dating back to the 18th century and included many books compiled by housekeepers or mistresses of country houses as well as two Eliza Acton books and books by Mrs. Beeton and early female cooks like Hannah Woolley and Maria Rundell. They weren’t expensive in those days, because no one was really looking for them. Of course, now old cookbooks are quite rare and expensive, with many celebrity chefs building up their own collections too.”

Cookbooks and recipes have always reflected the changing tastes of the culture. “I was fascinated by how social and economic changes were reflected in food and cookbooks. English food was often lambasted, but when it was prepared by home cooks using traditional recipes and local ingredients, it was very good indeed. But the cuisine was changing at the time because American heiresses were coming over and marrying English aristocrats, and they wanted to be very thin like Wallis Simpson, so recipes began to change — less butter and cream. One of my favorites was Eliza Acton — she was a celebrity chef of her day.”

I wrote recipes on cards so my cookbooks wouldn’t collect drips and splatters. “My mother loved looking at my cookbook collection when she came to visit and would pick out dishes for me to try. I cooked many different versions of rice pudding and bread-and-butter pudding, and I often made traditional English sauces like Cumberland sauce. Fried parsnips with walnuts was another favorite. I also wanted recipes for the fruits and vegetables I could buy locally — black currants, gooseberries, trout, cream and so on. Psychedelic drugs such as LSD, ecstasy, mushrooms and other trippy throwbacks are showing major promise as treatments for mental health conditions including depression and PTSD. Here’s what science has to say.

Recently, scientists have made a somewhat radical discovery: Certain drugs, shunned for more than 50 years, can ease intractable depression, end addictions and increase general well-being. You’d think this news would be shouted from the rooftops, but while medical researchers and study participants who have found relief are hopeful and excited, they know there may be minefields ahead. That’s because we’re talking about LSD, magic mushrooms and their countercultural kin — drugs that are still largely illegal and widely felt to be too fringe to be trusted. That said, psychedelic medicines, which include peyote and ayahuasca and sometimes MDMA (a.k.a. Ecstasy or Molly), are being tested at major universities for the treatment of a variety of ills. More than 100 clinical trials are currently listed on the government’s website for psilocybin (the psychoactive compound in mushrooms) and LSD; whereas it was once hard to recruit volunteers, research‑ ers say many are eagerly raising their hands. The reason? Results from completed studies, while preliminary, have been nothing short of amazing. With regard to depression, anxiety, addiction and eating disorders, “people who have suffered for decades have made substantial changes after this treatment,” generally with just one to three doses in a supportive setting, says Natalie Gukasyan, M.D., medical director of the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. And these shifts seem to be lasting. Just ask Ellen Cox, a general manager at a brewery in Washington, DC. Ellen was a longtime smoker when, at 47, she signed up to take part in a study at Johns Hopkins. She smoked a pack a day — first thing in the a.m.,

after meals, with coffee, while driving and before bed. “My plans always centered around when I would get my next fix,” she says. Every time she tried to quit (cold turkey or with patches, gum or medicine), the smell of cigarettes lured her back in. When Ellen learned of a psilocybin study on social media, she was skeptical, but she decided to try it. As part of the study, Ellen underwent three months of psychotherapy, during which she was encouraged to focus on how detrimental and disgusting her habit was. Then, with two therapists keeping watch, she swallowed a capsule and slipped on an eye mask and headphones. “It was the most intense experience of my life,” Ellen says, adding that the music escalated in intensity as the drug’s effects did. “You sort of walk around inside your brain and dive down rabbit holes.” Ellen’s vivid visions included a colorful room filled with myriad doors, each opening to pleasant memories going back to her college days. The session provoked a range of feelings, from curiosity to joy to, briefly, paranoia. Ellen doesn’t recall thoughts about smoking during her trip, but when she finished and took a drag, it smelled and tasted awful. She stubbed out the cigarette, and in the three years since, she’s never yearned for another. Such dramatic results don’t come about for everyone, but a majority of smokers in the same study did quit.

What Happens in the Mind In a psychedelic therapy session, every person has a different experience, and many find it challenging to put into words because so much happens at once, says Matthew Johnson, Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine and associate director of the center where Ellen went. Studies have found that the drugs change what people see and hear, their spatial awareness and their perception of time. Many have insightful visions. “A cancer patient with sub‑ stantial depression saw a desolate landscape where she was digging and digging. Eventually she found a brilliant jewel, which she viewed as a metaphor: Her cancer had covered up her joy in life, but there was still beauty at its core,” Johnson says. More studies are needed for full understanding of how these drugs help, but we do know that psychedelics (with the exception of MDMA) lock onto serotonin receptors in the brain known as 5‑HT2A. This causes brain networks to shift their usual actions, says Jacob Scott Aday, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. “Areas that usually don’t talk to one another are suddenly communicating,” he explains. Psychedelics also seem to dampen brain regions known as the default mode network that in part help maintain our sense of self.

That’s why Washington, DC, resident Melissa Lavasani fought to decriminalize psilocybin in her city. “In 2017, I had such bad depression after I had my second child, and nothing I tried worked. After a few months and lots of research, I was so desperate for relief that I began microdosing with mushrooms and eventually tried another psychedelic medicine. It worked: I soon felt a lot more like myself, and through my experiences I was able to see that I already had the tools I needed to deal with whatever came my way inside of me — it was a really powerful realization, one I knew I had to share with others who were suffering. I didn’t want anyone to have to feel ashamed of having to sneak around in order to get relief. That’s why I worked on Initiative 81, a referendum in my city that aimed to decriminalize psychedelics by making planting, buying or using them among the police department’s lowest lawenforcement priorities, and I became the face of the campaign. It’s very disarming when a message about psychedelics comes from someone who might sit beside you at a PTA meeting. I was fully prepared for blowback, to be called a bad mother and wife, but in the end 76% of voters approved the referendum. Mental health, especially for women and moms, isn’t talked about nearly enough. Through my work on the referendum, I found out that a lot of my friends were dealing with similar issues and were so happy to have another potential option. And I am happy that I was able to help.”

The past — and the future Studies on LSD and other psychedelics got their start in the 1950s, and more than a thousand clinical papers were written over 15 years. Though most were not the rigorous clinical

trials researchers consider ideal, they offered a glimpse into the drugs’ possibilities. But when the hippies of the 1960s began using psychedelics recreationally and proponents like Harvard professor Timothy Leary urged students to down LSD and “turn on, tune in, drop out,” society turned against the drugs. Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, which made them not only illegal but also difficult to research. Large numbers of scientists turned to them again only after 2006, when an expert at Johns Hopkins published a high-quality study in the journal Psychopharmacology. That research showed that when 36 healthy people were given psilocybin in a supportive environment, they reported positive changes in attitude and behavior. These were still being experienced even 14 months later, a follow-up paper found. Today, other universities have dedicated research centers, including New York University and the University of California, Berkeley. (Most study psilocybin, because unlike with LSD, sessions last four to six hours rather than 10 to 12.) Psychedelics were given another boost in 2018 when journalist Michael Pollan published the best-selling How to Change Your Mind, describing the research and Pollan’s own experiences. That same year the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted “breakthrough therapy” status to psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, a designation

This could explain why many participants relax long-held beliefs and are open to new ways of thinking about themselves and their problems. “Psychedelic therapy can be such a dramatic experience, akin to a major life event like visiting another culture or falling in love,” Johnson says. He describes psychedelic therapy as more similar to psychotherapy than a course of treatment with most psychiatric medicines. When used for addiction, for example, pharmaceuticals act as a substitute for the desired substance, blunting withdrawal. But psychedelics provoke self-reflection, which is what psychotherapy aims to do, he says. That’s what happened for Kelsey Ramsden, a 46-year-old entrepreneur in Vancouver, Canada. Five years ago, she felt hollow and depressed, though she was an award-winning businesswoman with a wonderful husband and great kids. She was already in psychotherapy and taking antidepressants, but was still struggling. Kelsey spent two years researching psychedelic therapy — reading articles, talking to experts and conferring with several colleagues who had done it — until she felt comfortable giving it a try. In a room with a psychiatrist and a psychologist (the professionals stay quiet but are there for comfort if needed), Kelsey was given psilocybin. She viewed a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors. At some point she began seeing situations in her past as if they were movies on a screen, without judgment and from both her own perspective and that of others. “It was transformative. I could see that those who’d hurt me were hurting themselves,” Kelsey recalls. Over the next year she had two more sessions, with psychotherapy in between. She credits the experience with dramatically changing her life. Her self-esteem has soared, and relations with her extended family are vastly improved. “I call it mental wealth. My depth of emotional resources used to be shallow, and now it’s so much deeper,” Kelsey says. The experience was so profound that she quit her job and became president and CEO of a company, Mindcure, that researches psychedelic molecules in anticipation of the day the drugs become widely legal.

that speeds up testing. “I think a psychedelic will be approved by the FDA within the next several years,” Johnson says, assuming that research continues to show positive results. Psychedelics are currently being studied for a number of conditions, including: DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY Johns Hopkins published results in JAMA Psychiatry last year in which more than half of 24 people with major depression who had two psilocybin sessions (along with supportive psychotherapy) were in remission a month later. Published findings on long-term outcomes from this study are forthcoming, but “one-year results are looking promising,” Dr. Gukasyan says. Even patients facing life-threatening disease have been bolstered emotionally. New York University researchers found that 60% of cancer patients who used psilocybin in their study had no depression even four years after the experience. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER When California researchers compared MDMA and talk therapy with therapy alone in a study of 90 people, the combo won. Two months after treatment, two-thirds of the MDMA group had no more PTSD symptoms, compared with only one-third of the others. ADDICTION When 15 smokers took psilocybin two or three times along with having cognitive behavioral therapy, 60% had dropped the habit 30 months later. “Most people see a substantial reduction in cravings. And the emotional aspects of withdrawal—the irritability, fear, depression— seem to be better,” Johnson says. HEADACHES Yale has begun investigating whether psychedelics might diminish migraines and cluster headaches. ANOREXIA Dr. Gukasyan and her colleagues have treated only a few people with the disease so far, but the results have been promising. “It’s hard to imagine that somebody who might have been struggling for decades could improve dramatically, but in some cases that is what we’ve seen,” she says. Even healthy people may feel better when they use psychedelics under controlled conditions. One study showed that anxiety decreased and positive affect increased a month after a dozen people took psilocybin in a controlled laboratory setting. A small group taking LSD similarly reported an increase in optimism, British researchers found. And a review Aday published last year found that many who had tried psilocybin said they felt more connected, more spiritual and more emotionally upbeat.

Don’t Try This at Home While experts are excited about psychedelics’ potential, they caution against using them outside a clinical setting—in the 1960s, using the drugs at concerts, at parties or at home sometimes sent people to the emergency room when their trips turned bad. “We invest a lot of time in N OV E M B E R 2 0 2 1 G H

developing a rapport with participants and helping them feel safe going into their psilocybin experience,” Dr. Gukasyan says. Even in a controlled setting, some may become anxious or paranoid, says Aday, who has found that these tend to be people who have less open or accepting personalities. And folks most at risk of experiencing adverse effects are people with a family or personal history of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, which is why researchers are excluding them from studies, at least for now. To be clear, it remains mostly illegal to use these drugs outside clinical trials. Federal and state laws ban their use, except for members of Native American tribes and certain religious groups that use them in ceremonies. Last year, however, Oregon became the first state to legalize psilocybin in therapeutic settings (after the state creates rules), while cities like Oakland, CA, Denver and Washington, DC, have decriminalized their use. (See sidebar, opposite page.) Ellen Cox looks forward to the day when others can quit smoking the way she did. She no longer coughs or feels short of breath, and her life isn’t ruled by her smoking schedule. And she’s saving money too. “I used to spend $350 a month on cigarettes — I used that money to buy myself a new car,” she says.

4 PANDEMIC Taug U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy highlights a few positive truths that bloomed during the pandemic and explains how we can make the most of every moment by KA IT Y N PIRIE

The pandemic changed our lives in countless awful ways. But the huge challenges we overcame shifted our perspectives in helpful respects as well. “A lot of people have come out with this sense that you need to do something a little bit differently,” Vivek Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., the nation’s top doctor, said in an interview with Good Housekeeping Editor in Chief Jane Francisco. “These moments of crisis are opportunities for us to step back and reflect on what really matters, what’s going to help our families be healthier, what’s going to help our children be happier.” Here, four happier-life lessons to embrace.

1.

IT’S TIME TO PRIORITIZE MENTAL HEALTH. “For many people, the pandemic — especially with the isolation and physical distancing — led to a deeper sense of loneliness,” says Dr. Murthy. The number of people who felt lonely was on the rise before 2020, and research suggests that the pandemic worsened that trend. People who struggle with loneliness (or other mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, which the pandemic also exacerbated) have a greater incidence of a range of negative health outcomes. It’s another reminder to check in on friends, family and coworkers and not just assume they’re all right. Simple acts like dropping off a meal for a friend or offering to take a walk with someone can go a long way in helping them feel loved and keeping you connected.

IT’S FINE NOT TO BE AN EXTROVERT. If you secretly loved wiping your schedule clean of playdates and happy hours, you’re not alone! Introversion is sometimes accompanied by a sense of shame, because our culture values extroversion, explains Dr. Murthy. The pandemic gave introverts the chance to live a life that supported their mental health without judgment, and more outgoing people also relished slowing down. Take note of what felt good to you and

know that it’s OK to need some alone time. It’s also nothing personal if a friend begs off from a night out.

3.

SINGLE-TASKING IS JUST BETTER. Last year, kitchen counters became school desks, coffee tables turned into office command centers and bathrooms could be the only quiet spaces where adults could exhale. As stressful as that was, it made many of us see the value of, well, avoiding multitasking. Since the pandemic, Congress has passed the American Rescue Plan, giving parents some financial relief and an advance child tax credit. At press time, the Biden administration was also working on an infrastructure plan that would help fund child-care priorities. But you can ease the stress in a small way now. “We can give people the gift of our full attention when we talk to them,” says Dr. Murthy. Consider how often you glance at your phone mid-conversation: You may hear what your friend says, but you’re not processing much — our brains aren’t designed to multitask. “If you’ve ever had the experience of being in conversation with someone when they were fully present and they were listening deeply to you and sharing openly, you know how amazing that feels,” says Dr. Murthy.

WE NEED EACH OTHER. “I think times like this pandemic we’ve lived through remind us that we actually all have the power to heal, because we all have the power to show up in people’s lives, to express kindness and compassion toward them, to be there for one another,” says Dr. Murthy. The coronavirus taught us how important hugs from family and friends are. And when we couldn’t hug one another, we gained a new appreciation for tools like FaceTime and Zoom. Going forward, let’s hold on to that drive for connection. Dr. Murthy suggests setting aside 15 minutes every day to reach out to someone you love. “That could be sending them a text to let them know you’re thinking of them,” he says. “It could be picking up the phone and calling them just to hear their voice and to ask them how they’re doing. That 15 minutes, as small as it is, is extraordinarily powerful.”

EYE HEALTH & IMMUNITY The vitamin A in pumpkin is a holiday wellness booster.

Is canned pumpkin actually healthy? A. Yes! In fact, a 1/2-cup serving of canned pumpkin gives you 100% of your daily vitamin A, an important nutrient to support eye health and keep your immune system working properly. Canned pumpkin is one of my favorite antioxidant-rich pantry staples (and I always buy extra at this time of year so I can use it year-round). Pumpkin gets its bright orange color from beta-carotene, a carotenoid the body uses to make vitamin A. Plus, pumpkin is a good source of fiber and is naturally low in calories. (Just make sure you’re buying 100% pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling, which is packed with added sugar and artificial flavorings.) I like to add pumpkin to smoothies, soups, vinaigrettes, oatmeal, yogurt, pancake batter or cookies (try a batch of our Pumpkin-Cherry Breakfast Cookies, page 106). You can even sneak it into a cheese sauce to add some extra nutrients to your favorite mac ’n’ cheese dish.

This coffee maker received a perfect score for performance, which assesses features like brew temperature and time, initial coffee temperature and ability to keep coffee warm. It had a fast brew time at about eight and a half minutes for 12 cups of coffee, while most others took about 10 to 14 minutes. It also kept coffee warm for two hours.

The Cuisinart PerfecTemp lived up to its name by making a hotter cup of coffee than most coffee makers when the bold setting was used. The coffee was pleasant and palatable and didn’t taste burned, and it kept coffee warm for two hours. The carafe is lightweight and easy to handle and pour from, and it has a wide opening, so you can easily clean it by hand if you like.

Like our Best Overall coffee maker, the Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker received a perfect score for performance. It also was easy to use without the need to read the instruction manual, thanks to its combination of graphics, knobs and buttons. It scored high marks for basket and water tank accessibility, keeping coffee warm and having an automatic shutoff feature.

What’s with all the different cheese knives? — Jessica T.

A: Just as a serrated knife is best for slicing bread and a paring knife handles small tasks, different cheese knives are designed to cut various types of cheese. Blunt knives with rounded, spatula-like blades make spreading soft cheeses, like goat cheese, easier. Long, thin knives with pronged tips (above, top) are versatile and can be used to slice through soft and semisoft cheeses and fork firmer cheeses onto your plate. Knives with holes (above, center) help prevent sticking, which makes them good for semisoft cheeses that hold their shape, like Cheddar. Short-bladed knives that are extra sharp (above, bottom) are good for hard cheeses with tough exteriors, like Parmesan. When picking out a cheese knife set, look for an assortment that suits the types of cheese you like to eat and serve most. Cheese knives with short handles are cute and easy to use to navigate a filled cheese board, while longer-handled ones take up more space but are sturdier and give you a better grip. The patina you worked so hard to build gets destroyed in the dishwasher, and rusting is possible. — Skylar W.

A: Home cooks use all sorts of methods to check for doneness, but the best, most consistent way to cook meat perfectly is by using a meat thermometer. This tool measures the internal temperature of food, meaning you can determine how cooked it is without cutting into it. Plus, monitoring doneness helps prevent both undercooking and overcooking, which leads to juicier, more tender, safer results (for a meat-temperature guide from the USDA, see page 108). Meat thermometers come in several styles, including dial and digital; some are even designed to stay in the meat during cooking. Though they’re more expensive, I prefer digital versions with quick response times, like the ThermoWorks Thermapen One ($105, thermoworks.com), which we found offered accurate results. To use any style of meat thermometer, insert the tip into the centermost portion of the food, steering clear of bone, which can skew the reading. I usually take my food off the heat right before it reaches the recommended temp, as food initially continues to cook (and get hotter) as it rests.

The New Age of Grandparenting The gray-haired set isn’t what it used to be. Compared with previous generations, today’s elders are more open-minded and more involved with their grandkids. But familiar stresses and power struggles remain. Last December, in one of her first moments with her newborn grandson, Patty cradled him close, inhaling his sweet smell and marveling at his tiny perfection. The baby, born a few days earlier during a blizzard, was now safely home in sub­ urban New York. Gently, Patty laid her grandson on his stomach in his crib. “Mom, what are you doing?” her daughter cried. “Don’t put him down like that — he’ll smother!” Welcome to today’s world of grand­ parenting, a complex dance in which Baby Boomers and Gen Xers are navigating new roles and just trying not to step on too many toes. As grandparents, this generation of family elders faces a dra­ matically different world than the one in which they raised their own kids. As

average life spans increase and grand­ parents report feeling younger and more vibrant than their own grandparents, their role in their grandkids’ lives will continue to evolve. Recently the Good Housekeeping Institute surveyed more than 1,500 people about grandparenthood today, asking them to weigh in on everything from child care to social media. The results revealed that 68% of today’s grandparents considered themselves “cooler” than their own grandparents. Certainly Boomer and Gen X grand­ parents embrace multiculturalism — an AARP national survey on grandparenting found that a full third had grandchildren of a different race or ethnicity. The vast majority of the AARP respondents said they would fully accept an LGBTQ+ grand­ child, and they were also far more open to gender fluidity than previous generations.

Patty, the grandmother in this story’s opening anecdote, considers herself to be squarely within that open­minded demo­ graphic. (She asked us not to use her last name, for fear of offending her daughter.) After all, she spent “a summer of love” living on a commune in the 1970s. When Patty raised her children in the 1980s, the prevailing medical wisdom was that babies should sleep on their stomachs to prevent them from choking on their spit­up. Parents today have revised guidelines — babies who sleep on their stomachs are at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. It’s not just medical understanding that’s evolved between generations. Changing demographics and parenting philosophies have transformed how grandparents relate to and stay connected with their grandchildren. Yet the basic fundamentals transcend time: Most grandparents see themselves as sources of knowledge and guidance and give their grandkids physical, emotional and financial support. But how involved grandparents are today, and the ways they get and stay involved, is a matter of constant rebalancing.

DIFFERENCES IN APPROACH One way grandparents can help is to go easy on new mothers. Their hormones are still elevated, and new parents haven’t yet gotten their sea legs. Moms in par­ ticular often need reassurance that they are doing a good job and may interpret well­intentioned advice as criticism, say Nancy Sanchez and Marilyn Swarts, who teach a grandparenting class as part of the perinatal education program at Stanford Children’s Health in California. A mom committed to breastfeeding, for instance, might be crushed if her mother says, “Give that baby a bottle. She’s hungry.” Yet grandparents feel marginalized and unneeded if they’re told that their guidance is out­of­date or unwelcome. Emotions run high until the new roles are established. “You remember when you taught your child to ride a bicycle and you just kind of hung on to the back until they got their balance?” asks Sanchez, a perinatal health educator and counselor. “That’s all you’re doing as a grandparent. You’re support­

ing them, helping them get their balance. But it’s their ride. This is their baby.” What’s more, Sanchez and Swarts empha­ size that grandparents must respect their kids’ parenting decisions. And many grandparents report doing just that, following parents’ guidelines to the letter. Michael McDaniel and Bob Benson have three grandchildren. The grand­ fathers , called “Daddy Mac” and “Big Papa” by the little ones, are scrupulously deferential. When they wanted to play a game with their granddaughter, for exam­ ple, they checked with the parents about rules on winning and losing behavior. “We ask questions because they raise their kids in a different way than we did,” Bob says. “I just want to make sure we’re careful to navigate how they want their kids to be raised so we fit into the plan.” But grandparents’ not respecting rules was one of the biggest complaints from parents in the GH Institute survey. “Some of my children’s grandparents try to undermine my husband’s and my decisions,” one respondent said. “It crosses our boundaries of respect.” One grandmother treats her non­ compliance with a chuckle. At her house, she proudly displays a sign that says What Happens at Grandma’s Stays at Grandma’s. “If we want to stay up until midnight and eat candy in bed when she sleeps over, that’s part of the fun of being a grandma,” she says. (She too wished to remain anonymous.) For Nancy Lee, the differences are cultural. Nancy, a social worker who lives on Long Island in New York, describes herself as a “FaceTime babysitter” for her grandchildren in Atlanta and Chicago. She reads and does crafts with her younger grandchildren and sends workbooks to the older ones that they complete together over video chats. But Nancy is Chinese, and her two sons both married women who are Korean. She refers to them as her “daughters­ in­love,” and she loves how they bring new food and traditions to the family. Not all grandparents are as open to new customs. Swarts says that in her grandparenting class, concerns often come up about which cultural traditions will be passed on. She advises parents to decide together which traditions they will maintain and then present a united front to grandparents.

GRANDPARENTING FOR HEALTH On top of the other joys of being a grandparent, it’s good for your physical, cognitive and emotional health. AARP calls grandkids “the elixir of life,” and an AARP study determined that the greater the emotional support grand­ parents and grandchildren receive from one another, the better their psychological and physiological health. “There’s a kind of magic about shar­ ing moments with these tiny human beings who are part of me and yet their own stunning individuals,” says Jamila Rufaro, a professor who lives in Califor­ nia’s Bay Area. Jamila has a photo of her daughter­in­law sitting in front of her home computer, remotely teaching a high school lesson on Of Mice and Men, with N OV E M B E R 2 0 2 1 G H

20­month­old Jorell on her lap. Mean­ while, Jamila was teaching remotely at Stanford University’s Business School. Eventually she juggled her own schedule to babysit Jorell and his 5­year­old sister, Ellora, two days a week. Like Jamila, while they sometimes struggle to keep up, many grandmas and grandpas today love their roles. “There are a lot of grandparents now being faced with stark realities that are different from what they had thought the world would look like,” says Alison Bryant, who heads the research division at AARP. “But in the end, love triumphs.” For more on Good Housekeeping’s grandparenting survey, go to goodhousekeeping.com /grandparentstoday.

Bless Our Pets It’s hard not to be thankful for all the ways our furry friends make life better. Here are a few reasons —  beyond the obvious! — we should be singing their praises. by LIZZ SCHUMER

Studies show that dog owners are more likely to meet their daily exercise requirements than people without a canine companion, notes integrative oncologist Trina Hazzah, D.V.M. Just getting up and moving around regularly can also help reduce stress and anxiety, especially during the frenetic holiday season or when the winter doldrums set in. Even a quick lap around the block or a vigorous game of fetch can help boost your — and your pup’s — spirits. To get your cat moving, toss around a catnip mouse: It’s not cardio for you, of course, but any time you spend standing instead of sitting is a plus.

They reduce our anxiety. Having pets around can lower stress, heart rate and blood pressure and increase the presence of the feel-good hormone oxytocin, explains HABRI steering committee member and Wellness Natural Pet Food veterinarian Danielle Bernal, D.V.M. “Positive human-animal interaction can actually change brain physiology in both humans and animals,” adds Hazzah. Beyond that, companion animals can help

regulate stress, explains Phillip Tedeschi, executive director emeritus at the Graduate School of Social Work, University of Denver. “If they sense that you’re stressed, they may want to lean in and cuddle or spoon you to help you self-regulate,” he says. To get even more feel-good benefits, take breaks throughout the day to pet your cat, talk to your bird or play with your pup.

We feel the connection. Having an animal companion can decrease feelings of isolation and loneliness, and the closeness goes both ways. “Dogs are highly affiliative individuals who live naturally in family systems not unlike ours,” Tedeschi explains. “In general, dogs work really hard to get along with each other — and with us.” Setting aside time each day to play with your pet will strengthen that human-animal bond, especially if you’re spending more time indoors during winter weather. If your dog doesn’t have basic obedience commands down, Bernal suggests practicing them to bring you closer and engage their brain. A Google search will yield lots of athome-training tutorials. And cats can also learn tricks, so don’t leave Fluffy out of the fun!

BUT PETS PICK UP OUR STRESS

Dogs and cats are very attuned to their owners’ anxiety as well as changes in routine brought about by holiday guests, travel or school break schedules. WATCH OUT FOR:

gastrointestinal issues excessive grooming reactivity or aggression destructive behavior urinating or defecating in the house or outside the litter box • unusual vocalizing or panting • depression Any time you notice a behavioral change in your pet, talk to your vet to rule out a physical issue first. Make sure they’re eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise, and that they have a quiet crate or bed for time-outs. Doggie day care or extra playtime can help release pent-up energy. Your vet may also recommend chamomile, melatonin or CBD if your pet needs extra help staying calm.
