GOOD

NIGHTS

This past summer, my little guy was away from us for the first time, staying with his cousins for an entire week. When I called to check in, my brother-in-law laughed nervously. He told me Grey had shown up at the foot of the bed at 7 a.m. asking, “Uncle Gordon, does ginger ale have caffeine?” He’d drunk a can before bed and been up all night reading —  and he was trying to figure out why he hadn’t been able to doze off. As the mom in this equation, I jumped to wondering whether the new surroundings or homesickness was the real cause. But when he told me about his LET’S CONNECT! Get a peek behind night, he said, “It was so amazing, Mommy — I read the GH scenes my whole book, more than 300 pages!” (plus, supercute kitten pics!). I was secretly proud because I’m a recently recovered late-night reader. But now that I’ve learned INSTAGRAM how important a good night’s sleep is to how we look @janeseymour and feel the next day…to how we’re able to maintain francisco a healthy weight…to how well we focus…to our performance at work…to staying on an even keel at home… TWITTER @janefrancisco to maintaining our health in general, I try harder than ever to get that solid seven to eight hours. For PINTEREST the most part, it’s working ; ) ! @jane_francisco If you’re tucked in right now, skip ahead to page 25 to read a quick primer on the science of sleep: Find out how you can wake up energized, refreshed and younger-looking even if you can’t put down this issue. Plus, if you think a neater, smoother, softer place to rest might help you drift off more easily, the GH Textiles Lab experts can help you make a better bed (page 77). Enjoy — and happy Halloween!

PS: The afternoon after my son’s allnight read-a-thon, Grey slept for four straight hours curled up in a chair!

Three-Step Bedtime Skin Routine

1

WA S H YO U R WAY . Skincare works best on a clean canvas. Here, GH Beauty Lab– approved ways to cleanse away the day’s grime that will fit your schedule.

30 Seconds

Swipe makeupremoving and cleansing wet wipes, like Beauty Lab go-to Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes ($6, drugstores), all over face, including eyes.

1 Minute

Pour a micellar water cleanser on a cotton round to get rid of makeup and grime without rinsing. Try GH Seal star Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water ($9, drugstores).

3 Minutes

Deep clean, using a washcloth, with a rinse-off wash such as GH Seal star Mary Kay TimeWise Repair Volu-Firm Foaming Cleanser ($28, marykay.com).

5 Minutes

Do double duty with an exfoliating cleansing brush like GH Seal star Olay ProX Advanced Cleansing System ($35, drugstores), which comes with a smoothing face wash.

2

CUSTO M I Z E YO U R T R E AT M E N T . Day creams’ richer cousins, night creams, like the GH Beauty Lab test winners below, tackle tough skin issues while you drift off. Boost wrinkle-fighting benefits by first spreading on a retinol serum such as GH Seal star No7 Restore & Renew Face & Neck Multi Action Serum ($34, Walgreens).

Chris Winter, M.D., author of Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It

When you don’t get enough shut-eye, your skin is sallow and zit-prone and can look tired and droopy. Here’s why: Blood flow to your skin increases while you snooze. If you skimp, your skin can look dry and ashen rather than rosy. Sleep time is cell-repair time. Growth hormone, produced during deep sleep, plays a role in protein synthesis, which helps our bodies heal damage to cells from daily wear and tear. Collagen (the protein that keeps skin looking plump and smooth) is affected if you don’t get enough sleep. Hydration balance is thrown out of whack by lack of sleep. You’re likely to see greater venous congestion around your eyes, or blood pooling in veins, leading to dark circles and sometimes puffiness. Stress hormones get cranked up when you’re tired. Without adequate sleep, our brains start producing cortisol, a hormone that makes you feel revved. But it can also cause inflammation, resulting in acne in the short term and wrinkles over time. Bottom line? Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep to stay looking (and feeling!) your best.*

Had too much salt or wine? Sleep propped up to encourage eye-area fluid drainage, says Dendy Engelman, M.D.

Just as you layer bedding (and face products!), double up on body skincare for maximum moisturization while you doze:

For puffiness: To minimize bags, give your eye area a mini massage as you apply cream, says Mona Gohara, M.D., a dermatologist in Danbury, CT: “Massage gently around eyes from inner corners out, as if you were wiping away tears, three times, to smooth and get rid of fluid.”

LOTION Top with a nongreasy body lotion like Beauty Lab gold standard Curél Skincare Ultra Healing Lotion ($8, drugstores). Deepsleep trick: Add a few drops of lavender oil to a dollop of lotion for better rest.

Try a before-bed lip “facial.” Weekly, buff in small circles with a damp washcloth to slough flakes, says New York City dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D. Rub in a bit of moisturizer, then slick a thick layer of emollient balm — like night cream for lips! — on and around your mouth. Try Beauty Lab– recommended Vaseline Lip Therapy Original Tin ($4, drugstores). LIPS

PREVENT BEDHEAD. Sleep on a silky pillowcase to keep hair from matting, says New York City celeb hairstylist Juan Carlos Maciques. “Hair glides over silk’s smooth surface with less friction, so you’re less likely to wake up with frizz and tangles,” explains GH Senior Textiles Product Analyst Lexie Sachs. “The majority of our testers reported that the cases helped stop bedhead.” Lab pick: GH Seal star Fishers Finery Tranquil Dreams 19 Momme 100% Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase, above ($20, fishers finery.com).

Q CAN YOU

Q

EXPLAIN THE VARIOUS TYPES OF HAIR DYE? — DEBRA F.

BIRNUR SAYS: Yes! Choose your formula based on how long you want the color to last and your desired results. A quick primer:

DR. OZ SAYS: Not after every manicure, but it is a good idea to give your nails a rest from polish every so often. Having lacquer on nails perpetually can stain or yellow them and cause them to dry out, which can exacerbate white spots and ridges. So pick a time every few months to give your nails a week or two off. And if you get gel manicures, try to mix in a regular one from time to time, as the acetone soak typically used to remove gels can dry out nails even faster, leaving them fragile and prone to breakage.

Q Is it true that products can stop working because skin and hair “get used” to them? — Jessica K.

30

G H OCTOBER 2017

X DR. MEHMET OZ MEDICAL E X P E RT

BIRNUR SAYS: Nope. With skincare, such as anti-aging treatments, it may take weeks or months to see full effects, and the gradual change could make it seem as if a product has stopped working. For a hair product, it’s possible for you to become accustomed to the way it makes your hair feel and look, so you may not notice as much of an improvement over time as when you first used it. LAB LOWDOWN: There is no reason for a skin or hair product to cease being effective if it was beneficial in the first place and hasn’t expired, so stick to your routine for the best results.

PERMANENT: This dye usually contains ammonia (to open hair’s cuticle) mixed with a developer (hydrogen peroxide) to lift and deposit pigment, changing the hair’s color until it grows out. DEMIPERMANENT: Ammonia-free, it deposits dye with a developer and lasts up to 24 shampoos for subtle enhancement and to blend regrowth. SEMIPERMANENT: This has no ammonia or developer and deposits dye only to soften gray or boost color, lasting about six to eight washes. COLOR GLAZE: A sheer tinted treatment that coats hair with pigment and shine through six to eight washes. TEMPORARY: This is both ammonia- and developerfree. Large color molecules adhere to strands’ outer layer and can be washed out in one to two shampoos.

HOW WE TESTED We evaluated labelblinded liquid lipsticks on 144 testers immediately and throughout the day for: Ease of application Look and feel on lips Transfer on cups Fade resistance

97/100

WINNER

LONGEST-LASTING For truly bulletproof (and drinkproof!) color, look no further than Urban Decay’s liquid lipstick, which held fast longer than all others tested— and comes in 40 shades, from nudes to bolds, in mattes and shimmers. TESTER NOTES “My new favorite lipstick!” one raved. “It looked freshly applied all day, through a full meal and a snack — virtually none of the color came off.” LAB LOWDOWN Before-and-after digital imaging showed that the formula resisted fading for five hours and remained on lips when testers sipped a hot drink. Users rated it above the rest for going on easily, not smearing or feathering, all-day wear and maintaining vibrancy. URBAN DECAY VICE LIQUID LIPSTICK, $18, SEPHORA

RUNNER-UP BARGAIN BUY With NYX’s matte liquid, you'll get nearly foolproof application at a nice price (with minimal color transfer). TESTER NOTES The sponge-tipped wand gave “full coverage in one pass” and “a perfect look in seconds,” two said. LAB LOWDOWN It had strong staying power through the hot-drink test and scored best for precise, even application without feathering (though some testers found it drying). Editor’s tip: Line lips with the applicator's point, then fill them in. NYX LIQUID SUEDE CREAM LIPSTICK, $7, DRUGSTORES (IN 24 SHADES)

SOFT SATIN FINISH

If you like a shine-free look but comfort is key, mousse-textured BareMinerals is your match.

For a satiny effect and a gentleon-lips formulation, Clinique was the top choice.

TESTER NOTES Several loved how it went on smoothly and delivered a chic matte finish without parching lips.

TESTER NOTES “It felt hydrating,” a user said, and many remarked on the great color payoff. “I received compliments on this,” one reported.

LAB LOWDOWN The “whipped” cream tied for the top spot for neither feathering nor drying out lips through the day, though the color wasn’t as lasting in the Lab’s photo analysis with the Visia Complexion Analyzer. BAREMINERALS GEN NUDE MATTE LIQUID LIPSTICK, $18, ULTA

LAB LOWDOWN While the other top picks stood up better to five hours of wear in the Lab assessment, testers gave it high marks for being nondrying and nonirritating. CLINIQUE POP LIQUID MATTE LIP COLOUR + PRIMER, $19, MACY’S

Kyra Sedgwick Five years after her memorable turn on the hit TV show The Closer and fresh off directing her first film, Kyra is back in a starring role for ABC’S new drama Ten Days in the Valley. Here, the mom of two and wife of Kevin Bacon offers a glimpse into her closet and home life. PERSONAL STYLE I like clothes that will last a long time. Black peg pants with flats or ballet slippers and a cool top and blazer is my go-to look. A blazer pulls everything together. LIKE MOM, LIKE DAUGHTER As an actor, there is so much rejection. Kevin and I have had some painful experiences, and you don’t want your kid to go through that. But I want [25-year-old Sosie] to follow her passion, and acting has become her passion. FAMILY TRADITIONS My husband and I cook together all the time. He’s an intuitive chef and really good at whipping things up without a recipe, which is so irritating, because if I’m following a recipe, I have to look at it over and over again. WISE WORDS When I was pregnant, my mom said, “There are going to be times when you want to throw your kids out of a window, and that’s OK.” Being a mother is hard. We send women the message that it’s all supposed to be perfect, but it’s not. Believe me, it’s still hard, and my kids are adults! — Lindsey Benoit

GH LAB TIP Spray backpacks with a repellent like Scotchgard so spills roll off instead of soaking in.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN A BACKPACK? MY KID’S IS GETTING DIRTY ALREADY! — Karen S. A: Backpacks get grimy fast! Wash by hand (not by machine) so it will retain its shape. Open its pockets and zippers and shake out crumbs. Brush or vacuum off loose dirt. Then follow these steps:

Oops! Nail polish dripped on my carpet. How do I remove it? — Hailey B. A: I hope you had time to blot the wet polish! For what’s left, follow these steps (testing on a hidden spot first for safety):

Wipe it right

Dip a cloth or sponge into a sudsy mix of dish soap and warm water, then wash the pack’s interior. Use a soft scrub brush and the same solution on its exterior. Pay attention to stains and to the back and straps, which rest against the body.

USE PURE ACETONE, NOT POLISH REMOVER Pure acetone, found in drugstores, doesn’t have the moisturizers or fragrance in some nail polish removers, which may stain. Put some on a cloth and work into tufts. Don’t rub.

Rinse and dry

Q

WHY DO I NEED A DISHWASHER CLEANER? DOESN’T THE MACHINE CLEAN ITSELF WHEN I RUN A CYCLE? — Linda D.

A: Dishwashers do flush out bits of food during regular cycles, but hard-water minerals and grease can settle on the spray arms, the tub and internal parts you can’t see, like the heating element and the filter. Used monthly (or as needed), dishwasher cleaners, like GH Seal holder Cascade Platinum, dissolve these machineclogging deposits and help boost your machine’s cleaning ability. SINK SMARTS

Fast strategies to send germs and grime down the drain

SANITIZE WISELY After cleaning, plug the drain and fill the basin with a gallon of warm water. Swish in half a cup of chlorine bleach. Dip in a sponge; wipe the sink surface, including the faucet and handles. Let sit five minutes. Rinse and air-dry.

64D

2

COMBAT STAINS Stash baking soda under the sink. Sprinkle it on stains, then scrub and rinse. To keep a stainless steel sink looking spiffy, buff away scratches, which harbor stains and bacteria, with a powdered stainless steel cleanser like Cameo.

G H OCTOBER 2017

3

MAKE IT EASIER NEXT TIME Just about everything that happens in the kitchen involves the sink, so it gets stained easily. For tough spots, use a cleanser with bleach, and to help repel grime, apply a light coat of mineral oil with a cloth.

4

DE-STINK THE DISPOSAL Food scraps trapped here often start to smell. Clean the blades by grinding up ice or frozen cubes of white vinegar. Thoroughly rinse the rubber gasket if you have one — it’s a magnet for debris (flip it and get the underside too).

KITCHEN APPLIANCES

H OW TO CH O OS E T H E B E S T COO K WA R E The five key questions to ask before you buy a new set of pots and pans

1

WHAT TYPE OF RANGE DOES THE COOK USE? Electric? Opt for pans with a flat aluminum disk on the bottom, like Tramontina. For gas ranges, solid aluminum clad with stainless steel or porcelain enamel and/or with a nonstick coating is best — All-Clad or Circulon. For induction cooking, confirm that the box says it’s induction-safe —  look for models from All-Clad and KitchenAid.

2

WHAT DOES THE KITCHEN LOOK LIKE? If the space is filled with professionalstyle appliances, consider anodized aluminum, with its handsome dark gray exterior. GH Lab Picks: Calphalon and Anolon. If it has lots of color, think porcelain enamel. GH Lab picks: Rachael Ray and Le Creuset come in an array of rich hues.

3

SHE COOKS, BUT DOES SHE LIKE TO CLEAN? If the answer is no, don’t even think about buying

anything but cookware with a nonstick finish inside — and maybe outside too. Gleaming stainless steel cookware looks beautiful in the store but stains noticeably with use, especially if she fries. GH Lab picks: Zwilling J.A. Henckels and T-Fal.

4

WHAT DOES SHE COOK? Are pot roasts her specialty? Or perhaps frittatas? Check that the pieces are ovensafe, especially if the handles aren’t metal. GH Lab picks: Calphalon pots and pans, which can withstand oven temperatures up to 450°F.

5

EXACTLY WHAT PIECES COME IN THE SET? How many are lids? Are three of them inexpensive nylon tools? Select sets with larger pots and pans, like 10- and 12-inch skillets, a four- or six-quart Dutch oven and an eight-quart stockpot. GH Lab picks: Swiss Diamond and Scanpan.

If you bake frequently, choose a range with only one oven cavity or with the larger cavity above the lower one. Otherwise you will need to bend to place foods in the oven, check on them and take them out.

Date-Night Do-Gooding

This Orlando mom found a genius way to marry couples bonding with charity

SEEING A SIMPLE ACT OF CHARITY BY HER CHILDREN inspired mom Kristen

Manieri to think up an easy new way for adults to give back. “I was at my daughter’s school for their volunteer day,” says Kristen. The kids were working in teams and injecting friendly competition into their task of creating meal kits for needy families before going off to play. A lightbulb went on. “I thought, Why can’t adults do the same thing?” says Kristen, 40, who hatched the idea for Do Good Date Night, a social — and socially conscious — nonprofit that throws events in which couples and friends get together to pack meal kits, hygiene packs for the homeless and more before digging in to a catered light buffet with beer and wine. Kristen had already founded the popular website Orlando Date Night Guide, on which she highlighted hot spots for fun evenings. She and her husband, Marc, the parents of two girls, regularly donated to charity, but like many others, they never OCTOBER 2017 G H

seemed to find time to volunteer in person. To get Do Good Date Night off the ground, she reached out to Feeding Children Everywhere, a national organization based in Longwood, FL. “They loved the idea,” says Kristen. The first joint effort in September 2015 quickly sold out (tickets are generally $20 to $25 per person). There, the attendees packed 9,500 meals and raised enough money through a raffle to fund 12,000 more. Best of all, many of that night’s diners still volunteer with Feeding Children Everywhere. Since that first dinner, more than 700 people have stepped up for a

night of service and socializing. “It’s easy to write a check,” says Kristen. “But rolling up your sleeves gives you an opportunity to truly make a difference.” HOW SHE DOES IT

Kristen partners with charities like Second Harvest, Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity that offer simple tasks and results with an impact. “They provide the service opportunity,” she says. She adds the fun factor: When a Do Good

Date Night is held at a charity’s facility, she organizes entertainment like trivia contests and live music. In other cases, Do Good Date Night is more of a popup party — for example, a winery hosted an event at which couples created 2,100 hygiene kits with things like soap and shampoo for Clean the World and then enjoyed a wine-blending competition. Kristen taps sponsors and donors to keep events affordable and provide raffle prizes. Want to try something similar in your area? Kristen’s top tips: START SMALL You don’t have to throw a big event with partners — you could organize a group to pick up garbage at a local park and then grab burgers and beer afterward. GRADUALLY GROW Reach out to local organizations, such as food banks, that already have a major need for volunteers and see if they’ll partner with you. DO IT YOURSELF Nonprofits tend to be financially stretched, so don’t rely on them to handle tasks like catering and marketing. For more inspiration, visit dogooddatenight.com. — Lisa Beach

ALL I WANNA DO IS STAND UP

DANCING QUEEN Finley busts a move. Her favorite tune: Meghan Trainor’s “Better When I’m Dancin’.”

and DANCE! ” by JONATHAN SMALL

Doctors said little Finley might never walk or talk, but mom Christina vowed to make her daughter’s dream come true IN THE SPRING OF 2016, 2-year-old Finley Smallwood was watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show with her mom, Christina, when another child appeared on the screen and started dancing. A look of awe took over Finley’s tiny, angelic face. She turned to her mom and said, “I wanna stand up and dance!” It seemed an impossible goal for Finley, who had been born with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that caused the muscles in her lower extremities to involuntarily spasm, inhibiting control of her legs. “I felt so helpless,” says Christina. “I would have given up my own legs for her in that moment if I could.” She gently propped Finley up on the couch, turned on a video camera and made the first

of what would be many “dance” videos of her daughter. In it, Finley’s smile is wide with joy as she wills her stiff legs to move to the music. Watching Finley’s delight was both heartbreaking and inspiring to Christina, who, at that moment, vowed to do everything in her power to make her daughter’s wish a reality.

BIG DREAMS

A year after their 2011 wedding, Christina and her husband, Josh, planned on starting a family. “I wanted a baby so badly,” she says. Until this point, Christina, a hairstylist and the daughter of former Major League pitcher and Christian radio host Frank Pastore, had led a fairly charmed life. But a few months later, her father was killed in a motorcycle accident. OCTOBER 2017 G H

BABY LOVE In the NICU shortly after Finley was born. Her name means “fair warrior.” “She’s a fighter,” says Christina.

G H OCTOBER 2017

Not long after that, Christina learned she was infertile. “I felt like a part of me had died,” she says. “I gained weight and cut off my friends. Looking back, I was clearly depressed.” When Josh tried to comfort her, she got angrier: “How could he understand how I felt?” In vitro fertilization was not an option —  it was expensive, and Christina didn’t think she could handle the stress of it. She and Josh decided to adopt, and they carefully pieced together a “Dear Birth Mother” scrapbook of their lives and hoped an expectant mom would pick them. Their prayers were answered when they were matched with a teenager who was almost six months pregnant with a girl. Christina and Josh were ecstatic and went into overdrive decorating the nursery, buying baby clothes and installing an infant seat in their car. But about a month later, they received an ominous call in the middle of the night. The baby had been born nine weeks early. Christina was excited, but Josh was scared. “I did the math in my head and knew it wasn’t

The baby was born nine weeks early. I did the math and knew it wasn’t good. good,” he says. But he buried his terror and put on a brave face for Christina. “She had not one ounce of fear,” he says. “There was nothing but love in her eyes.” At the hospital, Christina melted when she saw her new daughter, Finley, only 3.9 pounds, in an incubator, hooked up to wires and flashing monitors. “She was so tiny that she would have fit into doll’s clothes,” says Christina. “As soon as I saw her, I said, ‘This is our baby, no matter what.’ I just wanted to take her home.” A few days later, doctors told her there was unidentifiable debris in Finley’s brain and that this could lead to life-threatening bleeding. Even so, Christina remained optimistic. “I kept thinking, She’s going to be OK,” she says. “Denial is very strong.” The next few weeks were agonizing. Although Christina and Josh had the right to make medical decisions on behalf of Finley, the official adoption took longer. “The birth mother could have changed her mind at any time,” says Christina. “I was terrified. I was up all night, afraid our attorney would call.” Thankfully, the adoption went through smoothly. But Christina and Josh’s joy was short-lived; doctors discovered hemorrhages on both sides of Finley’s brain and told them she might never walk or talk. “I started losing it,” Christina says. She’d never known anyone with special needs, and now her daughter might need lifelong around-the-clock support. “At the time, I had no idea what a blessing it would eventually be,” she says. Five weeks after her birth, Finley arrived at her new home. Christina knew she should

SMILING THROUGH FEARS “This was just before her big surgery,” says Christina. “We had to be strong for her.”

be overjoyed, but the stress had taken its toll. “I had post-adoption, post-preemie, special-needs blues,” she says. She had stopped working, and she cried for hours. “I remember envisioning chasing a toddler down the hall, teaching my kid how to ride a bike, and just watching those images evaporate,” she says. Despite help from her mom and an infant occupational therapist, she was overwhelmed. Finley was a happy, smiley baby, but “every time she ate, she spat up,” says Christina. “She hated the bath because it overstimulated her brain. She never slept more than three hours and had terrifying full-body infantile spasms.” Through it all, doctors were unable to tell Christina and Josh what was wrong; Christina clung to the hope that Finley was just a late developer. But at 15 months, she was diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. “It was a hard pill to swallow, but I also remember feeling this weight was lifted,” Christina says. “Now I had a name for her condition.”

MOM NETWORKING

Christina joined online adoption and cerebral palsy support groups, which led to “texting at all hours of the night with other moms, crying, drinking wine together.” Social media became her lifeline, a place to vent, learn and form true friendships. “I felt very isolated in the beginning,” says Christina. “I cried a lot. It was dark. But I found those other moms who were like, ‘It’s fine to feel like that. I felt like that too.’ ” Early on, one online friend shared advice that changed Christina’s life. “She said, ‘If your baby’s smiling, you should be smiling. Never pity her,’ ” Christina says. “I realized that when Finley was happy just sitting there, I was mourning and worrying — not being present. I wanted to enjoy those moments with her.” Through social media, Christina learned about a surgery called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). The complex procedure involves cutting certain nerve fibers in the spine that transmit signals that cause spasticity. But when Christina asked her doctor about it, he brushed the suggestion off. Plus, there was the expense — close to $40,000, and the family’s HMO wouldn’t cover a dime of it. But other moms who’d had positive experiences were very persuasive. And the name of one doctor kept coming up — T.S. Park, M.D., a pediatric neurosurgeon at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Around the time Finley saw the Ellen show, Christina submitted an application for the surgery and, to her amazement, was told that due to the specifics of her condition, Finley was an ideal candidate.

I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love. It almost didn’t seem real. 72

G H OCTOBER 2017

Dr. Park’s prognosis was cautiously optimistic: Finley might be able to walk on grass and up a step, but walking on sand and dancing might never happen. It took only half a second for Christina to say yes anyway. The whole family celebrated that night — by having a dance party, naturally. But where would they find the money? A friend from Christina’s Bible study group, Brittany Rodriguez, had an idea: The Ice Bucket Challenge had recently gone viral to raise money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). What if they started a Dare to Dance Challenge to fund-raise for Finley’s surgery? They created a YouCaring crowd fund campaign to encourage donations and shot a video about Finley. Brittany’s husband, an engineer for the Los Angeles Fire Department, recruited fellow firefighters to make a dance video. Not to be outdone, the Covina Police Department made one too, and soon a local TV station did a story. The challenge took off, with gossip columnist Perez Hilton, stars from The Bachelor and even one of Beyoncé’s backup dancers

posting videos. In the end, the Dare to Dance Challenge inspired close to 2,000 videos from all over the world and raised $70,000. “It didn’t seem real,” Christina says. “I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love.” Finley’s surgery took place in October 2016 in St. Louis. Christina walked by her daughter as she was wheeled into the OR. “It was so scary,” she says. “The lights; the big, cold, empty room.” She gently took the pacifier out of Finley’s mouth so that a mask could be put on her face. As the anesthesia kicked in, Finley began jerking and twitching. Although Christina had told herself she’d be brave, she sobbed uncontrollably. The five hours of waiting were hell, and then Dr. Park came out of the OR with the best possible news: Finley was now free of spasticity. Christina sobbed again, this time from happiness. But the next day, Finley had a grand mal seizure. Mercifully, there was no permanent damage, but Finley had to lie flat on her back with no pillow for three days. In pain from

SAFE TRAVELS After surgery increased Finley’s mobility, she risked blood clots if she flew home, so the family took an RV trip across the U.S. “This was in Vegas, our last stop,” says Christina.

the incision, Finley kept pleading with her mother, “I want to go home!” For Christina, it was intolerable. “I began to question myself: Should I have done this? Was it worth watching her suffer?” But on the fourth day, Finley was able to sit up on her own. A day later, she was crawling. The following day — Christina’s birthday — Finley was discharged. The change in Finley was startling. For the first time, she could move her toes and bend her knees. Standing in the walker, she would tell her parents, “With my new legs, I want to dance!” In May 2017, Finley also underwent a stem cell treatment with John Shieh, M.D., in South Pasadena, CA. “It’s basically a stem cell infusion that’s designed to help her build new neurons,” says Christina. Now, on a visit to the On Pointe Dance Studio in Norco, CA, Finley is in full motion on her “new legs.” Wearing a fluffy black tutu, she is rehearsing enthusiastically for her first dance recital, shooing her parents away when they try to help her. No longer does she “wanna dance” — she knows she can, although she still needs an adult’s support to balance. “Having gone through that surgery, she knows she can overcome anything,” says Josh. Nearby, her mom beams proudly. A few weeks ago, she received news from Dr. Park that Finley should be able to walk completely unassisted within a year. Christina still turns to social media, but now she is the one giving support: “I tell people, ‘We were so focused on trying to give Finley the best life possible that we didn’t realize that was what she was doing for us all along.’ ”

Your eczema may be hiding something. You may think you know eczema, but what you might not know is that it’s a term used to describe a variety of skin conditions. The most common form of eczema is actually a chronic disease called atopic dermatitis. You can see the signs of atopic dermatitis on the surface, but a key underlying cause remains hidden. Inflammation beneath the skin can lead to the red, itchy rashes that you try to manage, but just keep coming back. This underlying inflammation is always active, meaning your next flare-up is just waiting to return.

Most down and fiberfill pillows (not foam) are machinewashable. Launder them every three to four months, following the care label. Wash two at a time in an agitatorfree machine to maintain the shape.

Curcumin, a compound in this Indian-cooking mainstay, is linked to reducing oxidative stress on vascular tissues that can increase risk of chronic disease. Use it in veggie stir-fries for a taste of South Asia.

Antioxidants in table salt’s BFF may help protect the cells that line your GI tract, improving gut function. Plus, new research has linked black pepper to helping reduce risk of colon cancer, so sprinkle liberally.

The anti-inflammatory compounds in this root are known tummy soothers, but new research links ginger to boosting satiety, which may lead you to eat less. Add fresh ginger to sauces and dressings for extra kick.

M IGRAI N E TRIGGERS If you suffer from migraines — intense, throbbing headaches often headache accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light — you know to avoid red wine, MSG and stress. But there are some triggers that HELP are less expected, says Adelene E. Jann, M.D., a neurologist at NYU’s Langone Medical Center. Look out for these unusual suspects. Specific smells Another migraine on date night? Those “Not tonight, dear” moments might be due to your special-occasion perfume. “Chemical molecules in perfumes can activate the trigeminal nerve endings to release pain signals in the brain,” says Dr. Jann. Abstain from pain: Figure out lifestyle triggers like fragrances by keeping a diary. “Track your migraines, the foods you ate before onset, the scents you smelled, activities and environmental changes that may have been related,” Dr. Jann says.

Fluctuating hormones Changes in estrogen impact inflammation, stress and blood sugar, all of which are linked to migraine. “Menopause and the Pill can rapidly lower estrogen,” says ob-gyn Prudence Hall, M.D. “And estrogen levels rise during pregnancy.” Abstain from pain: Switch to nonhormonal birth control; if your doctor agrees, try bioidentical hormones for menopausal migraines. Your best bet while pregnant? Non-drug TLC — most painkillers are not recommended, though your M.D. may prescribe one.

Orgasms Yeah, sorry. Strenuous activity like sex and intense orgasms can cause neck and back muscle tension, which can set off migraine. Orgasm also involves the activation of nerves in the central nervous system, which can have the same effect. Abstain from pain: Build up your arousal slowly, and ask your doctor about a daily preventive medicine and other treatment options that may help protect against migraines caused by moments of bliss. — Alexis Reliford

B R A I N P OW E R In this sneak peek at his new book, Food Can Fix It, Dr. Oz delivers proven ways to improve your memory, sharpen your mind and keep your neurons firing for life

Dan Page/theispot.com.

D R . OZ SAYS :

We’ve all had this experience — you can’t remember where you parked, or the last of the four things you needed to pick up at the supermarket…or you blank on the name of your friend’s husband or take an uncomfortable minute to recall what day of the week it is. Plenty of things that should be no-brainers (garlic — that’s the fourth item!) sometimes require real effort. Don’t panic! To a large degree, this “spacing out” is a natural part of aging, though surveys have shown that the prospect of memory loss scares people more than the threat of cancer, heart attack or accident. But here’s the thing: Alzheimer’s, dementia and memory-related problems are not necessarily inescapable. You can prevent, slow the progression of and in some cases even reverse some of these issues. The best way to think about your

brain is to visualize a phone network. Your brain’s neurons are like individual callers, sending messages to and receiving them from each other. When information makes it from one neuron to the next, it’s a successful “call,” and that neuron stores that information for future use. This is how memory is built —  messages are filed away for later. Taking the phone analogy one step further, if the neurons are individual callers, they need a network they can rely on to carry the information. Your brain’s network is made up of chemicals called neurotransmitters, which travel back and forth across your synapses (the name for the spaces between neurons) with the neurons’ messages. If a neurotransmitter doesn’t do its job, or your brain’s network becomes clouded or gunked up in other ways, it will affect your memory and other mental processes.

Here’s what you can do to keep the whole system functioning optimally. Move It: Exercise has been shown to be the most fitness effective brain defender. According to a review of 16 studies, people who are regularly physically active reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s by 45%. That means 150 minutes a week of moderately intense aerobic exercise — where you’re working hard enough for your heart to beat fast, but not so hard that you’re too breathless to talk. This simple prescription helps promote new networks of small blood vessels, which allow more glucose and nutrients to reach more brain regions. Use It or Lose It: Pushing challenge your mind to learn new yourself things helps keep it plastic, meaning that it continues to develop. Take a class in a new OCTOBER 2017 G H

30-SECOND BRAIN BOOSTER Chew a piece of cinnamon gum — a study found that it might help memory function.

Feed Yourself nutrition the Right advice Fats: Because your brain is the fattiest organ, healthy fats are essential to protect against memory-related diseases. Saturated fats are rigid molecules, while omega-3 fats are flexible. When your brain is repairing itself and making neurons, it prefers flexible cells. Fish is a great source of omega-3s: An American Journal of Clinical Nutrition review found that adding a serving of fish per week to one’s diet was associated with lower risks of dementia and Alzheimer’s. (Two to three servings, or 12 ounces, is even better.) Walnuts, cauliflower and chia seeds are other good sources of omega-3s. Favor Flavonols: Flavonols, plant-based antioxidants,  are found in foods such as dark chocolate, tea, red wine and blueberries. They help facilitate brain connections and may protect cells from toxins or the negative effects of inflammation. There’s nothing better than a little special-occasion dark chocolate.

Eat Plant-Based Foods: I can’t say this enough. High consumption of vegetables, especially leafy greens, has been shown to help brain health. Also, researchers have found that people who report eating lots of berries have slower rates of cognitive decline. Add seeds, such as pumpkin or sunflower, to your diet too: They contain a compound called lignan. One large study found that a higher lignan intake was associated with less decline in cognitive function, memory and processing. Those with the lowest lignan intake had a three and a half times greater cognitivefunction decline and a memory decline that was six times greater.

THE LAST THING I EXPECTED

when I was expecting was breast cancer. ” by KATHERINE MALMO

About 1 in 3,000 American women is diagnosed during what’s supposed to be a happy time. Here, three survivors share their tough decisions, hard-won recoveries — and beautiful babies’ miraculous starts

“It felt unfair to have a baby & not be there for him.”

Rachel Cathleen Photography.

Kathleen Sutton, 32, with Spencer, almost 3 Spencer knows a lot about things with wheels: He likes to push his toy trucks in the dirt and can name various construction vehicles. He’s also big into dinosaurs and rockets and hide-and-seek. But when it comes to his mom’s cancer he knows only that she sees a doctor, and that’s how Kathleen and her husband, Mike, hope to keep it. “I just want him to know he’s loved,” she says. At 10 weeks pregnant in the summer of 2014, Kathleen noticed that her right breast was swollen and a bit sore. She didn’t stress — she knew breasts changed during pregnancy. But while preparing to go to a breastfeeding class a few months later, she

felt a lump near her armpit. This time, she worried. “When you find a lump,” she says, “your mind goes to cancer.” Instead of being told her biopsy results by phone a few days later, she was asked to come in. “So it’s bad?” Kathleen asked. “The nurse said, ‘It’s a little more complicated than saying you have cancer.’ That’s when I really knew it was serious.” Sutton was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, an aggressive disease that appears as swelling, redness and irritation on the skin. The lump she’d found was a swollen lymph node, a sign that the cancer had spread. Right away, Kathleen says, she put on her “rosecolored glasses,” focusing on the fact that breast cancer was treatable. She pushed away thoughts that chemo might harm her baby — her doctors promised it wouldn’t cross the placenta. Their plan was to shrink the cancer and perform a mastectomy later. But before she began, her ob-gyn needed a baseline ultrasound to monitor the baby’s growth. The test revealed there were tumors on her liver. “At first, I thought how unfair it was to bring OCTOBER 2017 G H

a baby into the world and not see it grow up ,” she says. “But it wasn’t until doctors threw around words like “incurable” and “quality of life” that I realized I had to stop and process what was happening.” Then the fear set in. A few days later, though, “I left my oncologist’s office feeling more hopeful,” Kathleen says. Though her cancer was now considered Stage IV, her doctor told her about treatments that were on the horizon. “ I felt confident I’d be around long enough to benefit from immunotherapy, which my doctor believes is the future of treatment. That was amazing.” So at 33 weeks, Kathleen began chemo, and at 37½ weeks Spencer — eight pounds and healthy — appeared with a full head of hair. “That was a sign to me,” says Kathleen, who’d lost her own hair. “The chemo hadn’t gotten to him! I realized I’d been terrified something would go wrong. Once I could see him breathing, that was good.” The next eight months were grueling, but her tumors shrank so much that now they don’t show up on scans. She has since had radiation, targeted drug therapy, a double mastectomy and ovary removal, as well as hormone therapy. Today, she receives regular infusions, scans and blood tests. Kathleen is hoping to be part of an immunotherapy trial. Spencer, meanwhile, speaks in full sentences, which thrills Kathleen. Throughout her ordeal, “Seeing his smiles and being there for him gave me purpose, hope and a reason,” she says. Her cancer is fed by hormones, and although it might have grown more slowly had she not been pregnant, she says, “I don’t regret anything —  I got a baby out of it, and I think he’s pretty special.” While much is still unknown about her future, “We try to be aware of treasuring all the little moments and not taking my time here with Spencer for granted,” she says.

DOUBLY ADORABLE Lu with Rowan (right) and Quinn, age 6 months.

“I’d wanted to have kids for so long.” Lu Salas, 43, with twins Rowan and Quinn, 11 months Lu was 24 weeks pregnant with twin girls when her partner, Brenden, noticed a nickel-size lump in her breast. Her obstetrician told her breast changes were common when the body was gearing up for nursing. “I had a friend who had an infection in her milk ducts when she was pregnant,” Lu, design director at Nordstrom, recalls. “That’s what I was worried about.” But the lump grew. In a couple of months, it felt four times its original size. Still, Lu was so focused on her pregnancy that even as she lay on the ultrasound table 10 weeks later, cancer didn’t enter her mind. “As soon as the doctor put the wand to my chest she said, ‘Oh, yeah,

that’s cancer.’ And I was like, ‘Wait, I’m not here for cancer!’ ” Last October, at 35 weeks pregnant, she was diagnosed with aggressive Stage II breast cancer. More than anything else, Lu was worried that she wouldn’t be able to breastfeed, which is generally believed to be best for babies. “I wanted them to be as natural and healthy as they could from the beginning,” she says. It wasn’t until after the couple met with a surgeon and an oncologist that Lu wrapped her brain around the idea that this was about her too. “I was obviously devastated, but at the same time, I had this very clear sense that this was just one more thing to get through,” she says. Because Lu is small and one twin was breach, her doctor had scheduled a C-section for 37½ weeks. Her oncology team decided there was little risk in waiting to start chemotherapy until after she’d had some time to recover from the birth. This plan would allow her three weeks to nurse before she’d have to stop to keep the medication from passing through

Treating breast cancer during pregnancy is a matter of weighing the mom’s well-being against the baby’s, which isn’t always easy, says Elisa Port, M.D., F.A.C.S., chief of breast surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and an investigator for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “Each treatment for the mother has potential harm for the baby,” she says, and unless the cancer is diagnosed close to term, “delaying treatment until pregnancy is completed has potential harm for the mother.” Surgery can lead to miscarriage when done early in pregnancy and early delivery when done later in pregnancy; chemo isn’t advisable during the first trimester; and radiation must wait until after delivery. The good news: “Most research shows that pregnant women with breast cancer fare as well as those who are not pregnant, as long as treatment can be optimally delivered,” says Dr. Port.

the breast milk to the babies. Rowan and Quinn made their debut on Halloween, and with practice they got the hang of nursing. Lu was up and down emotionally: “The clock was ticking — I knew my time being able to breastfeed was going to end soon. It was wonderful, and I was so grateful for those few weeks, but it was also heartbreaking, because it couldn’t last.” All too quickly, the focus shifted back to Lu’s treatment. She had 16 rounds of chemo in 20 weeks and dealt with bone pain and memory problems, both side effects. Still, it was a happy period with loads of visitors and, of course, baby time. “Whenever I feel [rotten] about what’s going on, if I just hug or sit or play with the girls, then everything feels OK,” says Lu. “I’d wanted to have kids for so long, and now that I do, I’m just so excited about them and so grateful for them.” Lu’s chemo was so effective that it was difficult for the surgeon to find the tumor during her lumpectomy in May. Lu finished radiation and plans to start targeted drug therapies that will slow the growth of any remaining cancer. For now, she shows no signs of it. The girls are almost a year old — Quinn, a tiny, squirmy pixie, and Rowan, laid-back and cuddly. Lu says they’ve started to really enjoy each other: Quinn reaches out for Rowan’s hair, and they smile and make each other laugh. “It’s the best thing in the entire world,” Lu says. “They are so strong, they don’t even know it…at the same time they were growing inside me, my body was trying to kill me, and they were like, ‘Screw that! That cancer isn’t going to take anything from us. We’re going to grow and thrive and be huge babies and really healthy.’ ” As for Lu, “I just feel like I can do anything,” she says. “At this point, with what I’ve handled all at once, nothing else seems that hard anymore.”

ALL SMILES Keeley and Lacey on a family vacation last year in New Orleans.

“I’ve f inally stopped worrying.” Lacey Sikora, 43, and daughter Keeley, 13 For years after her daughter was born, Lacey’s goals were short-term — seeing her go to preschool or maybe kindergarten. “Now my goal is to see both my children graduate from college, get married and have kids,” says Lacey, a writer in Chicago. “Beyond that, I want to make sure our family remains strong and that we’re still in the kids’ lives even after they leave home.” That’s a luxury Lacey might not have had. In January 2004, she was 10 weeks pregnant with her second child when her ob-gyn felt a lump in her breast. A biopsy revealed that Lacey, 29, had Stage II breast cancer. After a lumpectomy two weeks later, she learned that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, confirming she’d need chemotherapy. The news was devastating: A mere 13 years ago, there were precious few studies on chemo’s effect on a fetus. Lacey had already been told that if she needed chemo, it was unlikely she’d be able to carry her baby to term; it was early in her pregnancy, and doctors couldn’t delay treatment until the baby was born. Lacey and her husband, John, were devastated and had some awful decisions to make. Thoughts about the future ricocheted in Lacey’s head. “I was worried

about the baby,” she says, “but I also had a young son” — Sam, a toddler. “What would it be like if I wasn’t there? I actually had thoughts about marrying off my husband to someone else! I thought, The kids will be very young, so he’ll need to marry someone or get a very good housekeeper.” None of these thoughts were very comforting, so Lacey searched for an oncologist who was confident she could receive treatment that wouldn’t hurt the baby. She found one who would follow what is now standard practice for pregnant breast cancer patients: He’d use one of the chemo regimens thought to be safe for the fetus in the second and third trimesters, and he laid out a treatment plan that included six months of chemotherapy during Lacey’s pregnancy and radiation after the birth. They would both be fine, he told her. “We were scared, but we felt like nothing was too much to take on as long as we knew our baby was going to be OK.”

I had a young son. What would it be like if I wasn’t there? I actually had thoughts of marrying off my husband to someone else.

Lacey had 12 rounds of chemo through her 35th week, when her doctors grew concerned that the baby had not grown since her previous ultrasound (slow intrauterine growth was a possible side effect of chemotherapy). But on July 2, 2004, the day Lacey was supposed to get her last chemotherapy treatment, she went into labor early and gave birth to Keeley, who weighed just four and a half pounds but was perfectly healthy. “Once she was born, it was pure joy,” Lacey says. “She had her fingers and toes — all I felt was extreme happiness.” The nurses offered to take Keeley to the nursery, but Lacey wanted the baby by her side. The couple brought Keeley home two days later, and Lacey came back after a week for her last round of chemo, which was followed by six weeks of radiation. This time in Lacey’s life contained many more highs than lows. “I felt so loved and humbled by the outpouring of support,” she says. “Friends knitted baby blankets, brought dinners and watched my son. It reinforced my belief in humanity. Yes, bad

things happen, but people are wonderful. It gave me a sense of hope.” But when home alone with her two small children in the years that followed, Lacey worried about her cancer coming back. Every cough, she was certain, was a sign of cancer in her lungs. “Once I had a pain in my sternum, and I was sure it had metastasized to my bones!” she says. “I asked for a scan, and it was clear. Then my doctor looked at my huge diaper bag and said, ‘Is that what you’re carrying every day?’ ” The pain was from the bag’s banging against her chest. Thirteen years later, Lacey still shows no sign of cancer and says she has finally stopped worrying. Keeley, who goes by Kiki, likes to dance, act and sing —  and share the story of her birth. “It’s a miracle I’m here,” she told her class in a recent presentation. “She knows she’s really special,” says Lacey. “I always tell her, ‘You went through this with me, and you didn’t ask for it. If you could do that, you can do anything.’ ”

TH E STAGES OF

B R E A S T CA N C E R When a woman is first diagnosed, her team of doctors uses multiple factors to determine how advanced it is. “Knowing the stage is important to determine the best treatment,” says Dr. Port. Below, the basics:

A CURE

Your advocacy and dollars have helped save lives — breast cancer mortality has fallen by more than a third since the ’80s.

1976: Mammography is

used more often. By the mid1980s, almost a third of women over 40 are screened; by 2008, nearly 70% are.

1977: Lumpectomy proves

just as effective as mastectomy, easing women’s recovery.

1977: The breakthrough

drug Tamoxifen is approved by the FDA. It blocks the activity of estrogen, which fuels many breast cancer tumors.

1986: Tamoxifen is seen as

being useful in reducing recurrence and increasing survival in postmenopausal women.

1994: Taxanes, a class of

critical tumor-shrinking chemo drugs, emerge as vital for use in breast cancer patients.

1994: The role of the BRCA1 gene in hereditary breast and ovarian cancers is discovered. This, and the discovery of the BRCA2 gene in 1995, leads to genetic tests and the option of preventative measures for women at very high risk.

S TAG E 0 : These are precancerous cells that are confined to a duct in the breast — they have not invaded deeper into the surrounding fatty tissue or anywhere else. Usually called DCIS (for ductal carcinoma in situ, although there are other types).

1998: Tamoxifen is FDA-

targeted therapy for breast cancer, is approved; it’s used to treat a type of cancer that approximately 25% of breast cancer patients have.

A tumor is no larger than about ¾ inch and has not spread to lymph nodes or anywhere else.

S TAG E 1 B : The tumor is likewise small, and there are very small tumors in nearby underarm lymph nodes. S TAG E I I A : The tumor is small, but the tumors in the lymph nodes are somewhat larger or more widespread, OR the tumor is larger (up to around two inches) but has not spread to lymph nodes or distant parts of the body. S TAG E I I B :

The tumor is up to around two inches and has spread to lymph nodes, OR the tumor is even larger, but has not grown into the chest wall or skin and has not spread to the lymph nodes.

S TAG E I I I :

In Stages IIIA, B and C, the tumor can be large or small, but will have spread to more and/or more distant lymph nodes. Stage III also includes inflammatory breast cancer.

S TAG E I V :

This is advanced, or metastatic, breast cancer, which means it has spread beyond the original site to other organs and areas of the body.

I’M LOOKING FOR A GAME DAY CROWDPLEASER. ANY IDEAS? savory Cheesy Monkey Bread! We took a cue from our local pizza place and coated pieces of dough with garlicky butter, cheese and herbs before layering ’em into a Bundt pan. Test Kitchen Tip: Coat the pan with both butter and flour to prevent sticking!

PERFECT PEARS

For delicious fall desserts (like our Lemon & Thyme Pear Tart — recipe, page 126!), you’ll need ripe fruit. At the store, check each pear’s neck; if you press down and it’s soft, place that fruit in your cart. If the neck’s hard, just know it’ll be a few days before you can bake that pie. Until then, put pears in a paper bag that also contains a banana to speed up ripening.

CANDY CHEAT

Q Is there a rule of thumb for the amount of dried herbs I can substitute for fresh? — Barbara H.

A: Yes! The classic ratio

is 1 dried to 3 fresh, so plan to use 1 tsp. dried to replace 3 tsp. fresh. That said, if your herbs have been “aging” for a year or so in your cabinet, make it 1½ tsp. rather than 1 tsp. To get the most flavor from dried herbs, crumble them between your fingers before adding to a recipe.

Upgrade your favorite sweets with leftover Halloween loot: Swap in chopped-up chocolate candy bars for chocolate chips in cookie, cake, blondie and brownie recipes. For more ideas, go to goodhousekeeping.com/leftovercandy.

The gurus at Microsoft asked us to spread the word about their learning innovations to help kids gain confidence in school

MOM, I CAN’T READ

TEACHING TRAILBLAZER Lauren Pittman is changing how her students learn with help from Microsoft’s revolutionary technology.

For 10-year-old Ray Edwards, school was becoming a self-esteem buster — despite being a bright, eager child, he had made little progress in learning how to read since kindergarten. It was heartbreaking for his mom, Lynn, when he came home more and more upset every day.

Just when Ray’s confidence was at an all-time low, his teacher brain development got hold of new technology from Microsoft that proved to be just what Ray — and other children with learning and attention differences like his — needed to thrive.

T H E ST R U G G L E I S R E A L

Lynn Edwards never dreamed that any of her kids would have trouble reading. The kindergarten teacher at Holly Springs Elementary in Canton, GA, felt certain she could help them overcome any obstacle. But when Ray began struggling, she was like any parent: completely at a loss for how to help him. “It was such a big eye-opener,” she says. Ray’s teachers at Holly Springs tried several interventions, including tutoring, with disappointing results. Then, in fourth grade, he began working with special education teacher Lauren Pittman, who spends an hour a day with small groups of kids who require more personalized help. When Lauren met Ray, he had no faith in his abilities and dreaded reading aloud in class, where stumbling over words in front of his peers would render him inconsolable. Lauren, like Lynn, was heartbroken for him. “When kids like Ray don’t have the skill set to be able to read, they miss out on so much,” she says. Worse, many such students come to mistakenly believe they’re not

smart, which can exact a heavy emotional toll. “Unless you’ve been in the muck with these kids, you don’t get it,” says Lauren. “Their tears, their frustration. They have no self-worth at times.”

Lauren’s secret weapon to help Ray: She is a Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE), meaning she applied for and was awarded a certification that designated her an advocate of tech in the classroom. MIEs share ideas with the brand and with educators around the globe, an exchange that led the brand to ask if she’d like to beta test its free new Microsoft Learning Tools, including Immersive Reader. Lauren jumped at the chance and was blown away by her students’ progress. “I’ll never use anything else,” she says. “I’ve tried it all, and this is it.” When Ray began working with Immersive Reader last year, his reading jumped almost three grade levels. “He might have to work a little harder than his friends, but the confidence boost is amazing,” says his mom. “Seeing him pick up a book and read it for the first time, it was just, wow! That brought it all together for me.”

VIRTUAL TEACHER GETTING ALL CAUGHT UP For Lauren’s students, like Ray Edwards, the tech is life-changing. “Most have never had those successful moments,” she says.

“notebook,” and the app has Learning Tools built in. Through OneNote, students access their worksheets, take notes and upload documents, with tools like Immersive Reader acting as personal coaches along the way, helping troubleshoot common stumbling blocks for students with dyslexia or other processing issues. For example, when kids open a document, they can easily adjust the letter size, spacing and color to offset text crowding and letter jumbling, both common learning challenges; studies show that larger letter spacing and shorter lines help boost reading speeds. The tools also highlight each word and read it aloud, helping kids understand common sentence structure, proper enunciation and how words flow together. This means kids don’t spend 20 minutes sounding out a challenging word, the kind of frustration that could derail a would-be reader. Learning Tools also allows Lauren to create a Universal Designed for Learning classroom. Through it, she can personalize lessons according to each child’s abilities and send assignments directly to the child’s OneNote, leaving her more time to work with kids one-on-one.

MAKING THE GRADES

Ray is far from Lauren’s only success story. One former student used to talk about how the only jobs for him would be ones that didn’t require reading — now he’s considering a high school technology program and college. “They realize there are other options than what they thought their life would have,” Lauren says. As for Ray, he recently sang in front of a crowd at church for the first time, reading the small type and tricky words in the hymnbook. “It’s my favorite thing to do!” he says. “It’s amazing,” says Lynn, her voice catching. “It just has been leaps and bounds.”

Microsoft Learning Tools is a free cloud- or desktopbased set of resources designed to help reading and writing, including read aloud, font-spacing customization, syllabification and Immersive Reader. The Immersive Reader tool breaks down words and sentences, making text easier to comprehend for students with learning challenges. How It Works In an application like Word Online or OneNote Online, click on View and enable Immersive Reader. Press Play to have content simultaneously highlighted and read aloud. Kids can change the reading speed, line spacing, text size or color and view words broken up by syllable or sorted by noun, adjective or verb. We also love that it adjusts documents to a more basic and clutter-free layout (minus tabs and rulers) to help boost focus. Getting Started You can use the technologies online with your tablet, laptop, desktop or smartphone. They’re already built into cloud-based Microsoft apps like OneNote Online, Word Online, Outlook on the Web, Office Lens for iOS and Microsoft Edge, or if you have Office 365 on your PC. GH LAB PICK In recent tests, GH Innovation Lab engineers found the Microsoft Surface Pro delivered top performance, impressive battery life and crisp, clear picture quality. READING IN MOTION The Immersive Reader tool transforms the reading process by adjusting color, spacing and size and breaking down words. Pet-Safe Halloween Treats

Fright-night candies like chocolate, raisins and snacks with the artificial sweetener Xylitol are no good for animals. Give your critter healthy alternatives like these instead: Canned pumpkin Add a spoonful to your dog’s dry food. He’ll dig the taste and get vitamins A, C and E. Sweet potato Bake one, let it cool and scoop a bit into her bowl. Dogs love the sweetness, and it’s safe for cats as well. Plus, it’ll give them extra fiber. Source: Ashley Rossman, D.V.M., CVA.
