DREAMS LIVED OUT Designed to make the most of the breathtaking vistas surrounding HGTV® Dream Home 2022 nestled in the mountains of Warren, VT, this luxury cabin features two levels of spectacular outdoor living space. Created with high-performance Trex Transcend® decking, each inviting area offers the beauty of wood without the time-consuming maintenance.
BEHIND THE SCENES The open-air living room features Trex Transcend® decking on the floor and privacy wall here behind the sofa. The unbroken backdrop of rich Spiced Rum envelopes the space in warm wood tones and adds an unexpected design element.
SLEEK, ELEGANT RAILING
ELEVATED AESTHETICS Located on the second floor, this expansive deck blurs the line between indoors and out. Spiced Rum decking features a multi-tonal wood-grain pattern in a rich burnt umber that provides the look of tropical ipe with no sanding or staining required. Trex Post Cap Lights accent the railing and impart warm white light for a touch of coziness, while Recessed Deck Lights assist with wayfinding for added safety after dark.
For inspiration, visit TREX.COM/HGTVDREAMHOME
Offering effortless style with exceptional strength, Trex Signature® Glass Railing completes the deck. The Charcoal Black Posts with glass panels offer unobstructed views and complement the home’s contemporary architecture. The tempered glass infill makes unnecessary design elements vanish to maintain the clean lines of the modern style.

he only thing more jaw-dropping than the mountainside views that surround the HGTV Dream Home 2022 in Warren, VT, is stepping inside it. Luxury meets cozy cabin in an approximately 3,000-square-foot structure with stunning architecture, a generous layout, and sleek furniture. “It’s a mash-up of modern elements and the classic country style you see throughout Vermont,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn, who embodied Vermonters’ love of the outdoors with earthy colors and quirky nods to ski culture. Also fantasy-fulfilling: its proximity to the slopes. When family and friends come to ski—and they will!—there’s more than enough room to go around. Says Brian, “There’s no other cabin like it.” 12 HGTV Magazine
There’s posh ski lodge ambience all over the HGTV Dream Home 2022 in Warren, VT. Look around and enter for a chance to win it.
Glass doors and Velux skylights illuminate the entry. Signs in the house from a nearby antiques shop sprinkle in local charm.

For swanky-yet-homey-style, Brian put in channel-tufted armchairs, a modular sofa, and a mixed-materials coffee table (all from Wayfair). Old books and vintage-looking objects like a marble bowl and a weathered metal pitcher create that lived-in feel. Textiles in classic fall colors take a cue from the foliage outside.
kitchen oasis Cabinets in sage green (from Cabinets to Go) fit the woodsy locale. “We had an organizational stylist trick them out with everything you could need, along with the baking station by the fridge,” says Brian. Two industrial cage light pendants by Brayden Studio add edge to the downhome design. The windows slide open to an outdoor kitchen. Dreamy!

bedroom escape It’s warm and snuggly in the main bedroom owing to a terra-cotta corduroy comforter flanked by nightstands made of reclaimed pine, from Wayfair. Off-white walls (Alabaster by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams) showcase a unique focal point: a grouping of snowshoes Brian tracked down at local vintage stores. Dark beams highlighting a vaulted ceiling are practically a cabin requisite.
wall color Aleutian by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams
guest-suite getaway Anyone who comes to stay won’t want to leave—this space actually has a kitchenette behind the partial wall. “It’s like a mini apartment,” says Brian. For a twist on rustic, he paired an upholstered plaid bed by Sand & Stable and an artificial antler chandelier by Loon Peak with a soft blue ceiling and walls.
fantasy patio With a gas firepit, a hot tub, and a heated pool, this is the hangout year-round. Oh, and: that view! Brian styled out a comfy-chic scene, with Belgard pavers laid in a herringbone pattern and low-slung woven chairs from Birch Lane. Who’s ready for s’mores?
garage retreat An all-wood exterior would have blended in with the trees. Instead, ash-color fiberglass doors contrast with the black siding and the metal roof—which pop against foliage, snow, and greenery. The spot will grow on gardening buffs; it comes with a cool potting station and a nice assortment of tools. The walkway on the right leads to the glass front doors.

wood slats
WOOD SLATS: GETTY IMAGES; MEDINA GRILLO: AMVIO PHOTOGRAPHY
The trend: Hang ’em horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to make an impact.
Plain white walls in Medina Grillo’s living room got a new life with mere strips of wood. Medina (@grillodesigns) nailed up thin, unfinished pieces with skinny, not-noticeable nails; a laser level helped keep them in line. “They have a wood-panel look that fits my old-meets-new style,” she says. Bonus: The space between the slats was exactly the right size to display a message with mini marquee-style letters. HGTV Magazine 29
fringe This rookie fave can transform lamps, baskets, pillows, even mirrors.
To give the big closet in her bedroom big personality, Kelly Mindell (@studiodiy) channeled flappers. She got two lampshade rings—12 inches and 14 inches in diameter— hot-glued pink fringe around the rims (with shorter pieces on the upper ring), and glued brass lamp banding over them. “It’s the perfect complement to mine and my husband’s colorful wardrobes,” says Kelly.
fabric dye
Call it a design to dye for. Sara Albers and Melissa Fenlon (@aliceandlois) laid out a plastic tablecloth and rested bunched-up white cotton napkins on baking cooling racks. They plopped ice cubes over them, sprinkled powdered dye with a spoon, and let the ice melt completely. “Stick to three colors max per napkin, overlapping them only slightly so the shades don’t get murky,” they recommend. Wash in cold water, machine-dry, cover with a dish towel, and iron to set the dye.
FRINGE, DYE, BURLAP: PHILIP FRIEDMAN/STUDIO D
Devotees dip in for a variety of effects—ombré, watercolor, and marbling.

burlap
Rattan’s bargain cousin is restyling trays, the fronts of dresser drawers, chairs, headboards, you name it. It makes sweet placemats, too.
It’s a Cinderella craft story: from potato sack to glamazon. Cristina Sabilano Navoa (@cristina.in.colour) tapped the material for a console that her husband built. After he framed the doors, she filled in the empty rectangles with burlap, attaching them to the door backs with a staple gun. Staples are spaced about 2 inches apart, so the material stays taut. And, yes, it’s also easy to add burlap to existing wood doors—especially if they have inset panels (Mod Podge for the win).

Knitting mania has unfurled into yarn everything, from woven wall hangings to punch-needle rugs.

“Nothing in my home is safe from getting the pom-pom treatment!” says Kara Whitten (@kailochic). “It’s so easy.” She churned these out with a pom-pom maker (yep, they exist). Next, she hot-glued them to a 24-inchdiameter wood circle. Once the poms were set in place, she added a screw in the center of the wood and attached a clock mechanism. If any balls get in the way of the clock hands, trim them down.
pole wrap Like wood dowels, only quicker because it comes in sheets. Baby step: Try some on a cylinder vase.
For coffee shop chic in her kitchen, Sara Le (@withsarale) wrapped it up. To make the café table, she and her fiancé miter-sawed pole wrap to fit a 35-inch-tall fiber concrete form tube. She attached it with construction adhesive, stained it a white oak color, filled the base with sandbags for stability, and secured a marble top from an old coffee table with silicone. “Pole wrap on my cabinets, pole wrap on my backsplash—I can’t get enough of its organic charm,” says Sara.
tile
YARN, TILE: ALAMY; POLE WRAP: PHILIP FRIEDMAN/STUDIO D
Tile projects rule Insta. They have a high-end, pro-made effect at an NBD cost.
Jumping on the bright furniture trend, Vanessa Acosta (@fromabolivian) built a box out of plywood, painted sheets of white 1-inch-square tiles pink (try Wine Pairing by Behr), attached them with tile adhesive, and followed with a clear matte finishing spray. You could also just use pink tile. Vanessa filled in all the spaces between the tile with white grout that she tinted with red acrylic paint. “My biggest tip is patience,” says Vanessa. “Let the paint dry on the tiles before gluing them on and don’t rush the grouting—you’ll be amazed by the result!”

how bad is it if you don’t cover your grill? “Since you don’t want your investment to go up in smoke, protect it from the elements year-round,” says James Brown, a BBQ expert (@grillnation) in Cincinnati, OH. Moisture can rust anything from the grates—it can still seep in through the lid—to the legs, while rain might leave water spots. He likes covers made of nylon; it’s waterproof, and the higher the gauge

count, the more durable it is. Be sure it’s long enough, falling a few inches from the ground. When it gets frigid outside and you’re not grilling for a while, “burn away residue for two hours, then season the grates with cooking oil,” says Brown. Last, turn off the fuel at the source and disconnect it.

how bad is it to straighten your hair at the highest setting? Cool off, people. “Even at its healthiest, hair can show damage from excessive heat in the form of split ends, breakage, dullness, or dryness,” says Leonardo Valencia, a hairstylist for the Ulta Beauty design team in Houston, TX. Avoid daily flat-ironing no matter the temperature, especially if hair is color-treated or damaged—limit it to twice a week, max. The key is to first apply a heat-protecting product (pros like IGK Good Behavior 4-in-1 prep spray and Tresemmé Keratin Smooth heat protect spray). For hair that’s curly or thick and doesn’t straighten easily, start with a blowout. It applies less direct heat, and reduces hot-iron time. Low-temp regular touchups are fine, says Valencia; just keep using the heat protectant.
y a ! how bad is it if the plumber puts tools right on the floor? Laying down a drop cloth isn’t only a nicety—it can prevent scratches on your bathroom tile and germ situations. “Tools used in toilets could transfer bacteria to the floor,” says Philip Tierno Jr., Ph.D., professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine in New York City. Nasty stuff might get tracked around the house and ingested (think: if a kid picks up something from a contaminated surface, then eats without washing his hands), possibly creating digestive distress. If tools touched the floor, clean it with a disinfectant once the job is done. Next time a plumber visits, offer a floor covering if they don’t put one out.

how bad is it to eat standing up? Although it’s never a good idea to gobble chips as you’re hovering over the snack drawer, downing a meal at the kitchen counter is OK. “The magic isn’t in the sitting,” says Michelle May, M.D., founder of the Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating programs and training. “The point is to enjoy, pay attention, and not eat too quickly—otherwise you might not realize you’re full, and overeat.” That means resist checking Instagram or scrolling through emails while you munch on your turkeyavocado sandwich. Make standing dining an occasion. When you nuke a frozen meal, put it on an actual plate and break out a nice napkin. “Consider your mealtime a much-needed mental break,” adds Dr. May. After you’ve been sitting around WFH-ing, it’s a nice break for your body, too.
Guess what? It’s SO GOOD to discipline dogs without saying their name. You want them to have positive associations, so they obey directions.
If you love it and you think it suits your pooch, go for it, says Lisa Radosta, D.V.M., a veterinary behaviorist in West Palm Beach, Florida. “I had three rottweilers named Sweetie, Peanut, and Precious. To me, that’s who they were, my babies!” It’s not as if your pup’s feelings will be hurt should someone at the dog park snicker as you call him. There are, however, some dognaming don’ts. It’s best to avoid ones that sound similar to commands; “Skip” could be heard as “sit.” Also steer clear of words that your family says often, adds Dr. Radosta. Should a pup get used to hearing “Bananas” without any attached attention or consequence, she could stop paying attention.

MY OBSESSION
“I’m in the midst of a big reno, but I’m still making sure the books on my living room shelves stay exactly how I like them. Some stand up vertically, spine out. Some are stacked horizontally, as bookends. Special ones have stands, like at a bookstore. If a friend is over and asks to see a book, that’s cool, but they’d better put it back in the right place. If they don’t, I’ll know!” —Wendell Holland, Hot Mess House

“I’m a freak about shoes. Whether it’s a pair of heels on the closet shelf or rain boots by the front door, they’ve got to be side by side and in line. I can’t turn off the lights and go to bed if my slippers aren’t right. Otherwise, I risk nightmares about stilettos chasing me down the street.” —Tiffany Brooks, $50K Three Ways
“When I get home from the store, I dump shampoo, conditioner, and body wash I’ve bought into their dedicated refillable bottles. Then I line them up in my shower—spalike and very satisfying. When I started dating my boyfriend, I told him about this and wasn’t sure what he’d think, but it turned out he does the same thing. That’s when I knew we were a match!” —Sabrina Soto, Ty Breaker

“I’ll admit to a bit of a pillow problem. After my husband or a guest has left the couch, I like to reposition them so the smallest go in the front and the largest are in the back, and I re-fluff them with a chop down the middle. To me, it elevates the look of my sofa. My husband has jokingly threatened to get his own pillows for everyday use because the decorative ones are off-limits, but until that day comes, he knows the drill.” —Courtney Tezeno, Cash in the Attic

I go at it like it’s being photographed for this magazine—hotel corners, pillows fully fluffed, throw blanket perfectly placed. hen Abigail Braden’s husband, Matthew Swain, suggested they move from their cool townhouse in Brooklyn, NY, to the burbs, it took a lot to sell her on the idea. Visits to 40 different homes didn’t sway her—too traditional, too new, too boring. Then came number 41, “a typical split-level with a two-story barn attached by a long windowed hallway—I loved the weirdness of it,” says Abigail of the 1970s property in Ridgefield, CT. The couple were hardly dismayed by the bland interior; they were psyched to put their stamp on it. Between Abigail’s eye for style (she’s a designer) and Matthew’s handiness (he owns a construction equipment rental company), they stirred it up with funky wallpaper, art, lighting, and furniture, and a bunch of seriously impressive DIYs. There’s so much interesting stuff, the charm never ends. HGTV Magazine 49

few years ago, as Melissa Abdine coped with a chronic health issue, it occurred to her that livening up her family’s 2,400-square-foot home in Austin, TX, was the remedy she needed. “My body was changing and, as I started to feel better, I wanted that reflected in my surroundings,” she says. “I was taking inventory of my life and I was like, Oh my gosh, I’m not really expressing myself anymore.” The home had a lot of not-soperky neutrals going on. “I’d done what friends did in their places,” Melissa continues. “But I’d had fun with color when I was 8, and I knew I could do it in my 40s!” She also sought comfort in whimsical stuff that had always delighted her: eclectic art and objects and pattern. (“I mean, I named one of my daughters Paisley!”) Enlisting designer Amy Hadley, she went all in with redecorating and reenergizing. An infusion of brightness here, a dose of prints there and soon enough, the house was full of cheer. Says Melissa, “I look around and it’s colorful and playful, and I feel that way too.”

ohn Neary was thrilled with the idea of buying a lakefront 1960s home, except for one small thing: the kitchen. Cramped and dated (with misaligned cabinet doors to boot), it brought down the Bloomfield Hills, MI, house he’d found. On the plus side, it lay smack in the middle of an otherwise open main floor. “I’m not a person who ever pictured what their dream kitchen would look like,” he says, “but I knew this had big potential.” Tearing down walls to bust it out of solitary confinement created a continuous cooking, dining, and living space. Designers Christine Babini and Amy Pariser helped update it while paying homage to the home’s retro roots—see: the pill-shaped island and the terrazzo countertops and backsplash. The local landscape and the countryside of Ireland, where John grew up, inspired the natural tones. All that openness has encouraged his 18-year-old, Jack, to make meals on occasion. “He’s a much better cook than I am!” says John.
