wow!

what color is that?

Major paint inspo and can-do confidence.

copen blue + greek villa BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

Peach, light blue, and white go together as sweetly and deliciously as an ice cream sundae. Color-blocking and an arch shape (use a small paintbrush to outline the edges, then fill in with a roller) create a playful mural wall. HGTV Magazine 17

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

alexandrite + limón fresco BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

What better spot for a jolt of jade than an entry? The shade makes a big impression, yet its richness means it can jibe with plenty of other tones. On the door, a chartreuse color is a happy complement.

evergreen fog + loggia + shoji white BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

The versatile green-gray on the cabinets, vertical shiplap-style backsplash, and hutch changes with the light and time of day. Pairing it with taupe window trim and warm white walls cozies up a kitchen, especially one with wood elements.

novel lilac + cyberspace BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

Light purple isn’t just for kids’ rooms, and that’s never more true than when it’s alongside charcoal gray. The details on the wall also makes a difference— decorative molding has the sophistication and presence of an old library or a hotel lounge.

Garden Game Add pops of color to your deck, doorstep, patio, or rooftop with easy container gardening. And there’s no better way to show your outdoor spaces some love than with Endless Summer® hydrangeas. These colorful shrubs thrive in planters and add long-lasting color to otherwise inanimate spaces, from summer through fall.

Meet Your New Crush With its profusion of raspberry red or neon purple blooms and glossy green leaves, Summer Crush® is a breathtaking member of the Endless Summer® Collection. Its compact size makes it perfectly suited for containers and small spaces, blooming continuously throughout the season to add showstopping color and texture to your outdoor space.

Step-by-Step Planting

1 Pick Your Pot Select a planter at least 3" wider than the plastic pot your hydrangea came in, with multiple holes for drainage.

2 Plant Your Hydrangea Fill the container with potting soil, enough so that the hydrangea sits about 2–3" below the lip of the pot. Place the plant in, then fill in the sides completely with more potting mix.

Potted hydrangeas give you the versatility to move your planters around throughout the season and to change things up when entertaining.

Yes, painting them is a commitment, and it’s worth it—you get a pinch of bliss every day, whether you’re doing food prep or the dishes. She DIYed them over the course of a week, laying the cabinet doors on soup cans to make them easier to maneuver and to ensure full coverage.

how bad is it if a bed is in front of a window? “Even if your headboard blocks some of the window, you could turn it into a gorgeous focal point in the room,” says home director Jami Supsic. how bad is it to keep a goldfish in a glass bowl?

Harold, I think it’s time we look for a bigger place.

Everybody knows someone whose carnival fish legendarily lived for years in a bowl. Will some survive? Sure. Will they thrive? Absolutely not, says Ashley Emanuele, D.V.M., an aquatic veterinarian in Raleigh, N.C.: “One goldfish requires a minimum of 20 gallons of water to ensure it grows to its full size, and most bowls hold one or two gallons.” Since people often don’t bother to put a filter in a bowl, the water can get toxic; waste builds up faster in a concentrated space. “You’d have to change at least half daily to keep it clean,” says Dr. Emanuele. It’s also impossible to regulate temperature in a bowl without a heater, and tropical species prefer warmth. Get a proper tank and your little buddy will be, well, golden.

r ally a ! how bad is it to skip to the end of a not-great book or movie? “Forcing yourself to stick with subpar content is like staying in a bad relationship and hoping it’s going to get better,” says comedian Paul Scheer, cohost of the podcast How Did This Get Made (which hilariously dissects flicks that flopped). Spoiler alert: It won’t get better. The part of you that’s no quitter may have guilty twinges, but when reading or watching starts to feel like homework, or your mind constantly drifts to your to-do list, it’s time to bail. “I have no problem going to the Internet to find out who murdered the lady in the country house!” says Scheer. Follow his lead; there are too many good books and movies waiting to be loved by you.

how bad is it to pop food into the oven while it preheats?

y h t r o ! W s a e e l g b Ta Hydran

In most cases, passing on the preheat is less about safety and more about the quality and the taste of the food, says recipe developer Sarah Copeland, author of Instant Family Meals. “With roasted meats, poultry, and vegetables, that initial blast of high heat is what locks in the juices or makes things crisp and nicely browned.” Once baked goods go in the oven too early, overly melted butter and out-of-whack leavening agents could stop cookies and pastries from completely rising. A few exceptions: heating up leftovers, and making dense foods like baked potatoes and casseroles and “low and slow” ones meant to be cooked at lower temps, such as brisket.

HGTV pros reporting for duty. And they have easy, low-cost solutions for big and little challenges. No reno, no problem!

Is there a DIY fix for tired countertops? “Check out a countertop refinishing kit—kinds are available for multiple surfaces. They come in various stone finishes and tints and are usually applied like paint, some with a clear top coat. There are marble refinishing kits, too. Real talk, though—have the countertops replaced! Most people aren’t aware that it’s a relatively inexpensive upgrade. Laminate, granite, and butcher block are stylish Tiffany Brooks, HGTV Smart Home 2022 and affordable.”

I want to update my cabinets with different knobs, but I’m overwhelmed by choices. Help. “Let’s break it down. Stick with knobs and pulls that fit the existing holes in your cabinet doors, and goofproof styles. A round black knob or a straightedged pull can modernize the most dated cabinets, and any shape in an antique brass finish has European flair. Personally, I’m a fan of extra-long pulls. They add some drama.”

What’s a good way to make an older range look better? “Take years off with a beauty treatment. You can order new knobs and grates for gas stoves directly from the manufacturer. For instant gratification, leave a colorful Dutch oven sitting on top.”

Is it actually possible to make a kitchen seem larger without knocking down walls? “Definitely. A hack I love, and it works for any room, is taking stuff out. Sounds basic, but clearing off countertops as much as possible has the effect of opening up an area. Removing your upper cabinets—a pretty doable demo job—and installing open shelves instead is a game-changer. Simply taking the doors off two or three cabinets alone would Keith Bynum, Bargain Block make a huge difference.”

I’m over my tile backsplash, and I’m not up for spending on a new one. “You can paint it. Start by cleaning the tile with a degreaser. Next comes primer. A paint store can determine the best kind for your tile material. Go over that with an acrylic enamel paint, which will adhere well. The sky’s the limit for a design! Try a stencil, decals, or, if you’re feeling gutsy, freehand it.”

Luke Caldwell, Outgrown

How do you incorporate art with limited wall space? “Hang small framed prints on your backsplash with Command hooks. And make functional items more decorative—get a soap pump with a cool pattern, keep a sponge in a gold bowl, set colorful canisters on the counter, hang patterned mugs underneath cabinets with mug hooks, update a basic paper towel holder with a Carrara Breegan Jane, The House My marble one. And remember, cute Wedding Bought dish towels count as art!”

Any ideas for improving a darkish kitchen that don’t involve adding light fixtures? “Get under-cabinet lighting. It’ll illuminate the dimmest corners and you’ll be able to see better as you prepare food. Unlike clunkers of the past, today’s sleek, wireless, batteryoperated models are a cinch to install. Many come with a remote so you can turn them on and off from across the room when you want mood lighting. Mirrors are another go-to for me. Putting vintage ones Jasmine Roth, on open shelves brightens Help! I Wrecked My House spaces and they’re pretty.”

I have banquette envy and zero budget to get one built. #sigh

“Put together your own impressive version. Start with an upholstered settee that has a high back; Wayfair has great options. Place a round table in front and two or three chairs on the opposite side. Toss on throw pillows for pizzazz. It’ll look so custom and fun, you’ll forget you ever pined for a built-in.”

My tile floor is cracked. Can I do anything besides replace the whole thing? “It’s possible to hire a tile expert to replace only the tiles with the biggest cracks, and it shouldn’t cost much in the grand scheme of things. But the easiest solution is to hide blemishes with cute runners and mats. No one will ever guess they’re camouflage.”

Jennifer Todryk, No Demo Reno

Mika Kleinschmidt, 100 Day Dream Home

What are the least painful ways to freshen up a mostly wood kitchen?

David Bromstad, My Lottery Dream Home

“Besides painting the cabinets, you could do a single wall or the sides of an island. A stenciled pattern on a wood floor can be amazing. If you’re more of a buyer than a DIYer, swap out anything wood that’s movable, like barstools or the table and chairs.”

I lack kitchen storage, and I need relief! “Buy a slim, free-standing hutch and fill ’er up. Try moving your coffee station into it. If there’s empty space above your cabinets, place lidded baskets there to hold seasonal or special-occasion items—one for nice linens, one for holiday baking stuff, and so on. Sort your stuff and give away duplicate utensils or small appliances you rarely use. Maybe it’s time to let go of the bread-making fantasy? Just a thought! And take full advantage of whatever storage there is. Cabinet and drawer Grace Mitchell, Ty Breaker organizers have magical powers.” CATCH YOUR FAVORITES ON HGTV OR ON DISCOVERY+.

s a military couple, Jewel and Gary Marlowe have moved 13 times over the past 20 years. They bought their Colonial in Fairfax Station, VA, with hopes of settling in for the long haul. Built in 1994 and 3800 square feet large, it had cathedral ceilings and grand windows, but that’s where the appeal ended. Parts of the house were run down, and it completely lacked originality. A designer and a tireless DIYer, Jewel had a vision formed largely from years in transit with Gary, a fighter pilot. “When you’re used to living in cookie-cutter military homes, you learn to differentiate yourself through design,” she says. “I put color, glamour, and soul in every room.” Since there are often four kids in every room, Jewel figured out how to keep the look down-to earth. She went high-low, splurging on wallpaper and investment pieces (she’s got a thing for grand chandeliers) and sourcing vintage treasures from Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. While stationed in England, Jewel flipped furniture for extra cash, and she tapped that skill once again, redoing drab fabrics and adding molding and other flourishes. “Each item is special,” she says, “but nothing is too precious that it can’t be used—or sat on.” Gary and Jewel with, from left, Olivia, Eliza, Grant, and Amelia

our house is i m s A California couple scored a late ’50s stunner and did it up in all its mid-century glory.

Pops of sunny yellow (Hollywood Gold by Benjamin Moore) on a minimalist exterior: fresh!

Raised by an architect

Julienne and Remington with English bulldog Mackenzie. Baby Kensington Taylor is now four months old.

dad, Remington Heatley inherited a love for mid-century modern homes. “We used to take walks where he’d point out his favorites,” he says. When Remington and his wife, Julienne, began house-hunting in the San Francisco Bay Area, they had MCM style in mind. A year and a half later, they were still searching when a rare find hit the market… on the anniversary of his father’s passing. Built by renowned real estate developer Joseph Eichler in 1959, the 1,742-square-foot home in Walnut Creek was one of only a few hundred in the vicinity. There was much to adore, including abundant light and an airy layout (classic mid-century), an atrium inside the front door (classic Eichler), and the fact that it was well cared for (previous owners were architects). The couple worked with designer Karen Nepacena to decorate with mod patterns and colors, and to bring back wood walls that had been removed. Says Remington, “My dad would have totally geeked out over it.” PHOTOGRAPHS BY CHRISTOPHER DIBBLE STYLED BY CATHERINE DASH

Past owners had updated the cabinets and appliances, so designer Karen and the couple just changed the colors and the knobs. They also replaced the sink, faucet, countertops, and backsplash. VARIED ARCHITECTURE is common in Kalamazoo, but this English-style cottage was a special find. The rolled roof has a “Once upon a time...” effect. Some of the asphalt shingles were falling apart when Amy and Will Brennan bought their place. An experienced roofer did a fresh layer in a warm gray while preserving the design. “Our house keeps catching my eye when we drive up the street,” says Amy. “It’s part of our family!” ORIGINAL STUCCO SIDING remains smooth, owing to regular maintenance. “With an old home, things settle and move, so we’ve patched and caulked cracks,” says Will. “It’s well worth the beauty of stucco.”

A BAY WINDOW makes the Tudor even more quaint. They first came into vogue in the late 15th century to let in extra light, but they’re just as important for giving an exterior presence. CURVED PLANT BEDS have an appealing free-flowing effect. Mark and Chris filled theirs with deer-resistant plants—salvia, stella de oro daylily, coral bells—to dissuade snack seekers.

up your house number game! Try them somewhere unexpected. Hang ones lower than eye level, as on this home. We’ve also seen people attach metal numbers to a large rock in a front yard (mortar drill required). HGTV Magazine 93

A mod purple door morphed a meh house into a head-turner.

e e ai s A MID-CENTURY UPDATE was the goal of homeowners Karen and Steve Hassevoort. “The house was pretty plain and lacked distinct style when we bought it,” they say. The couple brought out the 1950s features by doing a new low-profile roof, replacing the double-hung windows with casement kinds, and installing a nifty front door. LIMESTONE is one of the longest-lasting materials you can choose when building a house, thanks to its resistance to the elements, fire, and termites. It’s laid in ashlartype masonry, with tightly stacked rectangular blocks.

A WINDOW THAT “WRAPS” around the corner of the house is contemporary cool. Painting the window’s corner post the same brown color as the rest of the window frame highlights its interesting angle. LUSH LANDSCAPING was a priority for Karen and Steve, to soften the boxy house shape. They worked with a local greenhouse to set up beds with a mix of sizes, textures, and colors. There are fluffy hinoki cypress and golden mop cypress in front of the large window, and a group of spiky Siberian iris to the far right. Weathered Corten steel edging plays off the house’s modern spirit.

STUDIO SCHICKETANZ

“I envisioned a home where a dog could lounge on a roof all day, like Snoopy did in the Peanuts comic,” says Mary Ann Schicketanz, an architect in Monterey, CA. She raised the bar with cedar siding, aluminum trim, a rubber floor, and strips of sod for a super-lush deck. That French bulldog looks to be a satisfied squatter.

tricked out “RV” Nina McNamar has given much TLC to her rescue pooch, Remi; he could barely walk when she adopted him. Sure enough, she didn’t spare a single feature when crafting the tiny trailer that sits in her yard in Plant City, FL. She cut pieces of wood with a band saw, did an outdoor dining area, laminated and meticulously applied dotted computer graphics, and painted the trim to look like chrome. “He gets so comfy in there,” says Nina, “I have a tough time getting him out.” Matching custom-sewn cushion and curtain. OMG.

Jenny and her husband, Ravi, created the 6-foot-tall structure out of treated lumber, black powder-coatedmetal cladding, and combed fascia boards. Nova has decorated with—er, hoarded—her chew things, the kids’ sandbox toys, and anything else she can get her paws on.

cottage chic Oscar’s custom build was an acquired taste—the Australian shepherd had grown used to hanging outside his human’s garage workshop in Tempe, AZ, as she tinkered. To coax him into it, “I crawled in and out more times than I care to count,” says Sadie Mae John. She fabricated it from two-byfours and cedar fence pickets. They were left natural, and the trim got contrasting crisp white paint. Slatted sides allow breezes to pass through while the roof shields from the sun.

hen you live minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, have his-and-her boats, and run your own oyster farm, doing a beachy kitchen comes naturally. Katie and Eric Hooper had been raring to make it happen in their Falmouth, MA, cottage. “The original was pretty awful, with dingy beige cabinets and gray laminate countertops, but we wanted to save enough money to do it right,” she says. In the meantime, she toured historic beach homes in the neighborhood, picking up ideas for staying true to their house’s 1950s roots. “One day the stove display panel basically melted while I was cooking,” she says, “and we realized it was time.” The Hoopers covered the walls and ceiling with shiplap-style planks painted White Dove by Benjamin Moore, put in white oak butcherblock countertops, then layered in blue and white (Katie’s favorite combo from childhood) and homey touches. Bring on the oyster stew!

The blues in the 11-inch-square mosaic marble tiles from TileBar play off the stove color. Instead of a wall of backsplash, Katie concentrated on emphasizing her prized appliance, and saved some cash, too.

These were built by a company Katie found that makes vanities with feet. The lowers look like furniture, a really cozy effect. Knobs and bin pulls from House of Antique Hardware match the stove’s brass.

White oak hardwood replaced gray tiles, enhancing the space’s lightness and warmth. An interlocking herringbone pattern means it’s harder for the wood to expand (and possibly warp and gap) in summer’s humidity. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 114.
