editor’s page Designers compete for a $50,000 prize on HGTV’s new summer show Beach Flip. Cohost Josh Temple, center, keeps the energy level pumped up.

“It’s amazing what paint can hide,” cohost David Bromstad noted after peeking in on the designers mid-reno.

fipping houses + beach = fun

a few months ago, hgtv invited me to appear on their new show Beach Flip. (yes!) here’s the scoop: it’s a design competition show that takes place on the gulf coast of alabama. four teams each transform an outdated condo into a dreamy beach retreat. Josh temple, david bromstad, and nicole curtis mentor the teams and judge their work. the team that does the smartest fip—in other words, adds the most value to the home—wins $50,000 and a feature in HGTV Magazine. (the story will be in our october issue.) i can’t give anything away, but i can say that this was real reality tv. the pressure was intense, and every designer was in it to win it. as John said, “these teams started out playing it friendly and safe, but soon the fre of competition kicked in fercely.” i toured the fnished condos and was super impressed with the results. there are lots of clever ideas worth tuning in to see. back at the magazine, we were inspired by the beach, too. on page 75, we feature the best shore-inspired fnds that would look great in any home anywhere. do i think houses in iowa can have cabana-stripe rugs and sea glass–color lamps? heck yeah! our outdoor party section (page 125) also boosts the fun factor in this issue. We feature 28 plates that won’t break, a wheelbarrow as an ice bin, and the cutest diy paper fans ever. if all that doesn’t make you want to take a big bite out of summer, i’m not sure what will. enjoy the sunshine!

tune in
