Happy new year Also this month

F

or many of us, a new year inevitably brings up the topic of redecorating. But where do you get your inspiration? It’s a question that several people have asked me recently as we have been working through our own ongoing renovation project. I don’t know about you, but I’m always on the look-out for new ideas and tend to find them not just in the pages of magazines (though that is always my first port of call), but also on Pinterest and Instagram, as well as in less obvious places. I spent many an hour in lockdown checking out the best boutique hotels, everywhere from Scotland to Copenhagen. There was something incredibly satisfying about finding hidden gems that have a cool lifestyle feel about them. I might never actually visit, but I can certainly try to create the same stylish ‘vibe’ in my own living room. I’m always on Rightmove, too, searching (metaphorically) for my dream house and picking up a few design and decor tricks along the way. It seems that taking a peek into other people’s homes and their lifestyle is something we can’t get enough of. You have always told us that some of your favourite pages in HB are the houses we feature. So, when our brilliant new executive editor Terry Barbrook joined the team recently, he decided that we should take this inquisitiveness a step further. The results are on our new celebrity feature Open House (p162) where, this month, you can find out exactly what radio and TV presenter Gaby Roslin loves about her home. It’s a great read and a great insight! We have more new stories and ideas shaping up for the months ahead and we can’t wait to share them with you. So here’s to a happy, healthy and inspiring 2022!

P.S.

82 REAL HOMES AND AMAZING M A K EOV E R S We know that you love having a good look around other people’s houses, and it’s one of our greatest joys too. Each month, our Homes and Gardens Director Carolyn Bailey works hard to find a good mix of reader houses and real makeovers, but I think this month she’s outdone herself. From an ultra-modern space to a bold, colourful family home, there’s something for everyone. We hope you find lots to inspire you.

Form and function go hand in hand with this new tile collection by Little Greene and Bert & May. The colourful collaboration sees eight of Little Greene’s much-loved, timeless paint shades translated into tiles, offering home enthusiasts the opportunity for wall-to-wall colour in a mix of materials and finishes. The range is available in two signature tiles – soft, chalky cement squares (£4.08/each) and rich, glossy glazed herringbones (£1.34/each). bertandmay.com/collections/ little-greene

HAZEL OLIVER OF BADGER & BIRCH

B

ringing together a love of nature and creativity, maker Hazel Oliver (right) followed her passion and started Badger & Birch. After a redundancy and with baby number two on the way, she packed up life in Yorkshire and moved to Cornwall to be nearer family. Now, just a few years later, she works closely with a local fish restaurant in Falmouth to recycle its waste mussel, oyster and scallop shells into handcrafted pieces. Created in a studio (well, garden shed) and crafted in small batches, Hazel’s pieces are formed from a non-toxic eco-resin free from VOCs. This is hand-poured into moulds in a palette of muted tones and pastel pinks, corals and mints. Black and white terrazzo textures from the cleaned and crushed shells are then embedded into each piece. A process of hand wet-sanding exposes the shells and patterns hidden beneath the surface. badgerandbirch.co.uk; Instagram at @badgerandbirch

MOOD LIFTER

Some things are always true: the post-party vibe of January is anything but pleasing. Also true: pink lifts the spirits. That’s why it’s a bit of a no-brainer that the new year is the time to give your home a rose-tinted update. Finding your favourite fuchsia is no easy task (just see our colour expert Sophie Robinson’s column on p49 for everything you need to know about subtle blush shades), but when in doubt, team pink with… more pink. All-over coral walls work wonders with a sumptuous velvet sofa in soft powder pink. Add laminate flooring in a subtle rose tint, luxe metallic furniture and a fluorescent neon light and you’re set for a very happy new year. Sensation Candy Cane Painted Oak Rose laminate flooring, £34.99/sq m, House Beautiful Collection at Carpetright. For similar sofa and pouffe, try Swoon. For similar coffee table, try Homary

Calm and collected The new year brings with it the chance of a fresh start – so embrace the opportunity to give your home a detox

COMPILED BY SARAH KEADY WORDS JAMES CUNNINGHAM

TAKE A MOMENT Organised spaces offer a real escape from the stresses and strains of everyday life – that’s why it’s worth taking a considered approach to decorating your home. When it comes to the art of display, less can positively mean more, so go for a pared-back, curated look to populate shelves and surfaces. Position a relaxed chaise or a daybed close by to turn it into the ideal spot for rest and contemplation. Find a similar daybed at Skandium 24 housebeautiful.com/uk

S T Y L E I N S P I R AT I O N

CURATED CORNER Colour can soothe the senses, so opt for calm, nature-inspired shades for a restrained palette that also feels inviting. A more minimal style of decor doesn’t have to result in impersonal spaces – on the contrary, showing carefully chosen objects you love will elevate a room. For pieces that deserve to be put on show, try The Shop Floor Project

House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 25

MINIMALISM allows the design of every OBJECT to take centre stage

EASY DOES IT Blurring the boundaries of rooms can make the whole house feel more relaxed. Keep doors open to allow for flow and consider other ways to make your layout feel more flexible. Embrace textures such as grainy wood and slubby linen to connect your space to the landscape. Avoid too much pattern, though, as it can look like visual clutter. Fresh displays of greenery will create a sense of life – leafy palms and soft fronds of fern have an airy quality that can encourage calm. For a similar vase, try H&M Home. For a similar watering can, try Garden Trading 26 housebeautiful.com/uk

S T Y L E I N S P I R AT I O N

DRAW THE EYE Choose furniture that offers both function and form – sideboards, drawers and tables with built-in shelves provide practical storage as well as a surface ideal for creating a display. When composing a vignette, keep a visual balance by using objects in a mix of scale and textures – ceramics pair well with the glass, for example – while the main item usually works best if it rises above all the others. Give pieces room to breathe and don’t over embellish their surroundings. For a similar unit, try Pinch. For a similar side table and vase, try John Lewis & Partners House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 27

Choose PIECES with PURPOSE – furniture can be USEFUL as well as BEAUTIFUL

EDIT YOUR SPACE Simplify the decluttering process by taking it room by room. The bedroom is an ideal place to start – an organised wardrobe will give your daily routine an immediate lift. Appraise every item of clothing and sort into piles to keep, donate or dispose of. Many textiles can be recycled, so check your council website. As with most things, it’s better to invest in quality than quantity – clothes, sheets and towels made from responsibly sourced, sustainable materials will far outlast their cheaper counterparts. For a similar hanging rail, try Ferm Living at Nordic Nest 28 housebeautiful.com/uk

S T Y L E I N S P I R AT I O N

ALL IN ORDER Built-in storage and hideaway drawers are excellent for keeping more functional possessions and other household essentials out of view. Hidden handles will give a flush look so pieces blend seamlessly into your space. For decluttering to be truly significant, though, don’t be tempted to adopt an ‘out-of-sight, out-of-mind’ attitude. Arrange inner shelves and drawers logically and maintain order with a one-in, one-out system. This will give you the peace of mind of knowing that everything can be found swiftly and easily. For a similar side table, try Pepper Sq House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 29

S T Y L E I N S P I R AT I O N

CLEAN & GREEN Things inside a home feel meaningful when drawn from nature – not only can it influence the materials and decorative elements that make up our spaces, there are also many ways it can inform how we live. Consider swapping your usual detergents for ecofriendly alternatives, for example, or switch to a mood-boosting tea brewed from blends of spices rather than disposable teabags. Taking a more planet-conscious approach can invigorate and inspire. For similar white table linen, try Nordic House. For similar black crockery, try Ernst at Nordic Nest 30 housebeautiful.com/uk

Styling tip

For a space to feel truly organised, it’s not just about decluttering – look at the room as a whole, from the colours on the wall to the textiles and the furniture. Too much going on? Take it back to basics until you achieve a visual harmony that just ‘clicks’.

BREATHE NEW LIFE The benefit of getting organised at home is that it results in ordered spaces that aid relaxation. That doesn’t mean surfaces need to be free of life – they just need to be free of clutter. Surround yourself with pieces you truly love to really enjoy a sense of calm. For a similar pink vase, try Oka House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 31

IT’S TIME TO TURN OVER

A NEW LEAF This season, it’s all about botanicals – from tiles and wallpaper to fabrics and crockery (and of course plants themselves). Here’s how to flex your green fingers FEATURE JESSICA TAVERNER

TILES An easy entry point for the botanical trend is tiling. Ceramic and porcelain designs can introduce plant-based pattern to high-traffic areas or rooms exposed to moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Tiling a splashback behind a sink or cooker, for example, offers an ideal way to bring nature into your kitchen, and why not enliven the bathroom by going all-out with a bold feature wall? Pair decorative designs with a plain version from the same range to create a coordinated look and stop busy motifs from becoming too overwhelming. Botanical doesn’t have to mean green, however. Bring rooms to life with tropical teals, on-trend reds and earthy browns. Just look for leafy lines to nail the trend. Main picture Glendurgan Fern tiles in Olive, £74.11/seven, Ca’ Pietra. ‘Plants are living pieces of art for your home that bring personality, atmosphere and so much more’ Maria Ruffino, horticulture buyer at Homebase

HOUSE PLANTS Whether you’re only just becoming a plant parent or already have a growing family of house flora, you’ll know that a mix of textures, sizes and leaf shapes will help boost your mood and look fabulous in your home. A couple of convincing faux plants thrown in will add another nod to the great outdoors. Perk up an empty corner with large plants, such as a Fiddle-leaf fig, bird of paradise or a yucca. And as mature plants are more established, they’re less likely to give up on you. Easycare varieties include cheese plants, Kentia palms and succulents. Not green- fingered? Take the guesswork out of plant care and opt for a self-watering pot with a base that includes a reservoir for feeding the roots. If floor space is limited, create a vertical garden with a cascading display of trailing plants.

TABLE TOP

Inject some gorgeous greenery into mealtimes and serve up a visual feast of plant-based patterns, tantalising hues and natural textures. Matching plates, bowls and dinner sets can create a cohesive, all-together aesthetic. Keep delicate floral designs simple and team with a plain tablecloth or bare table. Not everything has to be matchy-matchy though – try your hand at combining leafy prints from different collections for a look with lots of personality. WALLPAPER Give your interiors a new lease of life by decorating walls in an abundance of nature-inspired prints. Delicate trails, forest ferns and playful florals look great when used on a large scale. Our pick of the crop includes the House Beautiful Paradise Tropics wallpaper from Homebase (above, middle). It has Paste the Wall application, so it’s quicker and easier to hang than traditional wallpaper, and when you want a change, removing it is a doddle. For a moody tone, team deep shades with velvet fabrics and dark wood floors and furniture. If you’re after a bright and airy feel, choose a light design and combine with pale flooring and lightweight textiles. Leaving a wall empty prevents a scheme from becoming too busy, while dried flowers will add a soft edge to busy patterns.

FABRICS Add some natural beauty with embroideries, weaves and prints overgrown with woodland flora and tropical palms. When making cushions or curtains or upholstering furniture, make sure you pick the right textile for the job in terms of weight and drape. For seating, opt for a robust, structured material such as linen, polyester or wool, and bring impact with large-scale prints. Bedding and accessories, such as cushions, can be less robust and suit small-scale ditsy prints, while the trailing design of climbing plants creates a sense of height, ideal for blinds, curtains and headboards. 38 housebeautiful.com/uk

BEDDING

Botanical prints work brilliantly in the bedroom, with leafy profiles and delicate illustrations bringing colour and pattern. Lighter linens splashed with subtle botanicals will transport you to warmer climes, while jungle-themed prints featuring palms, tropical plants and even animal motifs are a further-flung take on the look. Why not choose a bold design for your bedding and use it as the starting point for the rest of the room, incorporating paint, cushions and accessories in complementary colours? For an easy-to-live-with scheme, marry wooden furniture with plain crisp cottons and add pops of pattern with cushions and throws.

TOP TILE TRENDS If you’re in the market for tiles, there’s a practically limitless array of shapes, sizes and styles to choose from, so it’s a cinch to add personality to your bathroom. One key trend is colour blocking. Consider covering a whole wall in bold or brightly hued tiles to draw the eye, or think laterally and choose a shade that will serve as an interesting mid-point for others in the space. Don’t forget the floor – gently textured tiles or designs with more interesting shapes, such as the Mandarin Stone hexagons shown here, will bring character underfoot. Keep scale in mind and avoid using oversized tiles on the floor of smaller rooms, as they can emphasise the limited proportions of a space.

CHOOSE A BEAUTIFUL BASIN The basin might be a focus of practical tasks, but it doesn’t have to be all about function – the right one can upgrade your space and elevate your everyday routine. Countertop basins will be big news this year and for maximum impact make it all about the material. Whether you choose an elegant marble basin, or one made from a glitzy metallic or industrial concrete, consider the finish – matt tends to have a serene quality, while a glossier, polished look is ideal in luxe settings. While wall-hung or countertop basins, such as Claybrook’s Koto design shown here, feel most contemporary as they take up less room, pedestal designs work well in bathrooms where space isn’t at a premium.

HOW TO PAINT PROPERLY Bathrooms aren’t as simple to paint as other rooms, but don’t let that get in the way of being creative with colour. The humidity caused by warm temperatures and steam from the shower, and the occasional bath spill, mean walls and ceilings need paints that can withstand water. Many brands, including Benjamin Moore – its Aura Bath & Spa matte paint is shown here in warmly neutral Seapearl – offer finishes to protect against wear and tear. Choose a soft natural shade such as watery blue, leaf green or sunshine yellow for a calm, peaceful effect. Walls painted in Seapearl Aura Bath & Spa matte, £31.50/0.94L, Benjamin Moore

THE SHOWER IS THE STAR OF THE SHOW While it’s a decidedly more practical option than a bath, a shower can still feel luxurious. The key is to let it take centre stage by giving it enough room in the layout, rather than treating it as an afterthought. Wet rooms offer the ultimate spa-at-home indulgence, particularly when configured with a built-in rainfall showerhead and toasty underfloor heating. To create a similar experience without too much structural work, consider a walk-in enclosure with a close-to-the-ground shower tray. This is a simpler and cheaper option, especially when plumbed in where a bathtub previously sat.

HB SOURCEBOOK º Hansgrohe offers a range of all-in-one shower systems and showerheads, plus mixers, taps and valves to upgrade existing fixtures. º Lefroy Brooks stocks classically designed accessories, from handles and grab bars to wall-mounted soap dishes and towel rails. º Watersafe publishes a directory of plumbers throughout the UK (watersafe.org.uk), who are accredited by the water industry for both their qualifications and professionalism.

DON’T FORGET THE LIGHTING It makes sense to have multiple sources of light in the bathroom – for the practical purpose of illuminating specific areas and the more decorative benefits of making a feature out of certain zones. Astro Lighting’s Salerno wall lights, shown here, draw the eye towards the basin area, while casting a useful, and flattering, light around the mirror. This configuration works well paired with a pendant light in the centre of the room – fit lighting fixtures with a dimmer switch to allow for brightness when needed and ambience when desired. Bear in mind that electrical fittings in the bathroom need to adhere to regulations, so always consult a professional if in doubt.

STORAGE MATTERS

As they’re often the smallest room in the house, bathrooms need to be clutter-free to work well. This wall unit – part of a range of modular cabinetry designed by our House Beautiful style experts in collaboration with Bathstore, now living at Homebase – places a premium on style and storage. To help keep drawers and shelving organised, make sure everyday items are easily accessible, and operate a one-in, one-out policy for everything else. Need a quick fix? Invest in multi-purpose freestanding pieces such as a mirror that conceals handy drawers or a storage basket that looks decorative on open shelving.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BATH A freestanding tub makes a wow-factor focal point, as this design by Piet Boon shows, and is ideal for a long, relaxing soak. Modern options can be made from stone, cast iron or acrylic, the last of which is the most practical as it weighs less and can be fitted easily. Traditional claw-footed designs work well in period properties, while more contemporary styles feel sleek and spa-like in any room. If you lack the space for a fully freestanding design but like the look, try a back-to-wall curved bath instead.

BLUSH PINK

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH ALUN CALLENDER

P

ink has been so fashionable in interiors for the past decade, it’s almost regarded as a neutral. That said, the name alone can make some recoil in horror, possibly conjuring up a Barbie-themed boudoir. But pick the perfect one – soft and subtle with an earthy undertone – and you’ll have a decorating friend for life. I love blush pink for paint, its gentle warmth wrapping the room like a hug. Pale pink brings a feeling of love, nurturing and harmony, making it ideal in areas of quiet relaxation. It complements all skin tones, so helps you look your best, too. For me, it’s a go-to favourite. I can’t think of anything it doesn’t go with. That said, finding the perfect pink paint is a challenge. 7 I once ordered 20 tester pots of pink for a client who didn’t want it too cool (with blue undertones) or too warm (with yellow undertones). Bear in mind the aspect of the room. North-facing light will cool down pink tones, turning them towards lilac, while south-facing rooms could turn a subtle pink room peach. Just like every colour, the tone you choose is a personal preference, but I find the designer paint brands have the edge on the pink palette, so that’s a good place to start. Blush pink is the perfect partner for green – a striking emerald for a modern look, or a chalky sage for a restful vibe. It also works well with dark colours, such as navy and burgundy, softening an otherwise bold scheme. Imagine the drama of wraparound walls in dark blue with the ceiling painted in a soft pink to warm it all up. Pair with brushed-gold details and the combination is exquisite. It also looks effortless in an all-neutral scheme, be that a palette of ivory whites, earthy naturals or monochrome. 10 Just think pink – honestly, you can’t go wrong.

or Lotti Bernardout and her husband Andrew, it was a long wait for a house in their chosen location. With the future and family in mind, they had decided the time was right to upscale and had narrowed in on a handful of streets near London Fields, east London. ‘We were living in nearby Stoke Newington, which we absolutely loved, but these streets had really beautiful houses – homes with the real bones to benefit from the kind of renovation we were looking to do,’ explains Lotti. A year of biding their time was followed by a couple of false starts and houses falling through but, in 2016, they got lucky with this one. ‘But work on the house coincided with several big life events, including getting married, so we didn’t move in until 2019,’ she recalls. ‘The work was still three or four months off being finished, so we were here with the builders. Fortunately, the bedrooms and bathrooms were finished so there were some pockets of calm to escape to.’ Andrew’s vision for the house was a dramatic glass elevation to the rear, partially clad in Corten steel. The design is based very much on sunshine living and an indoor/outdoor feel – Andrew grew up in Australia and Lotti’s mother is from the US, so it’s a way of life they have long been comfortable with. Inside, the house was gutted, maintaining key original features such as cornicing and fireplaces, but applying a modern aesthetic to the staircase, which was cast in concrete on site; the rawness of the unpolished concrete was to be matched by natural and roughly hewn finishes throughout. ‘Our previous home had been quite colourful, but we had a different vision for this

house,’ says Lotti. ‘We worked closely with the wonderful architects at deDraft, who were brilliant and also introduced us to the work of interior designer Vincent Van Duysen. We fell in love with his use of neutral tone, raw materials and that minimalist aesthetic. We always knew we wanted a glass-backed house, but his work definitely influenced the palette and materials that evolved later in the project.’ Andrew managed the renovation himself and finding builders who could work to the high level of finish they desired was a challenge, but happily, they have achieved just that. The installation of the cast concrete staircase that links the three storeys was not for the fainthearted. ‘It was cast in wooden shuttering and took time to cure, so we spent a nail-biting few days just hoping it was going to hold up,’ says Lotti (pictured left). ‘But it’s been amazing watching it all come together. When you’re searching for all those finishes and specifying every little detail… it’s such a journey and you have to keep going until it’s right. We ended up sourcing our marble from Belgium because we just couldn’t find what we had in mind in the UK.’ Unpolished finishes soften over time, but one area that weathered in an unexpected way was the wood flooring in the kitchen. ‘It was one of the materials that took an age to find and we ended up having to import,’ explains Lotti. ‘We’d been very careful to cover it while the kitchen was being painted without realising that the underfloor heating was causing condensation to build up between the Correx floor protection and the wooden floorboards. When the builders lifted it up, we were all primed to see a beautiful finished kitchen and instead there were these hideous black marks all over the floor – it was the most horrifying discovery. The kitchen was in and all the marble fitted so we couldn’t just take the floor up but, interestingly, the marks have faded to a light brown over time. beautiful the weathered finish is and it’s true, it is quite cool, but also it’s hard not to be reminded of that moment.’ The raw beauty of the house is supported by a considered collection of antique pieces and designer additions. ‘I like older things as they bring character and a story,’ says Lotti, ‘and that goes for the artwork we’ve chosen too.’ Meanwhile, in the garden lush planting adds a softness against the sharp lines of the concrete and decking. ‘We’ve gone for lots of grasses and have kept it quite wild,’ she adds. ‘It was something we wanted to draw back into the house – that green, the texture and sense of nature.’ At the time of planning the house, there were just the two of them and they were organising their wedding, so how has this house adapted to becoming a family home? ‘Since having Otis, we’ve had to do a bit of baby-proofing. And certainly in the early days, when I had friends over with older babies, I was looking to see what worked and what could be a challenge. But, looking back, we wanted to create our dream home without making compromises,’ says Lotti, ‘and I’m so glad we managed to do that.’ HB

oudecia, the great Dane, stands with her front paws propped on the top of the gate that leads to the Georgian farmhouse that Lynette Page shares with her three children: Florence, Raphael and Xander. Toy poodle Aldo squeezes his head through the bottom of the gate and cats Bagheera and Luna eye you warily as you walk up the drive. This lively picture perfectly prepares you for the clash of colour and pattern that will greet you as soon as you step through the front door. ‘I’ve always loved colour,’ says Lynette. ‘It lifts me up. Whatever home I’ve lived in, I’ve always put my stamp on it.’ The family were living about half a mile away and were looking for a period property with more space and lots of historic features that Lynette could highlight. ‘I was drawn to this place as soon as I saw it,’ she explains. ‘It reminded me of the house that I always drew as a little girl. It was in good condition, but it was beige, beige and more beige. I couldn’t wait to brighten it up.’ Although the property didn’t need any structural work, the first thing Lynette did was reconfigure the upstairs space. She gave each of the children’s rooms an ensuite and turned the bulk of the first floor into a main bedroom suite, where a Crittall-style shower panel dramatically stands at the end of a stylish dressing room corridor. An oval bathtub raised up on a plinth of monochrome chevron tiles is the focal point in the bedroom. ‘Years ago I stayed at Manchester’s King Street Townhouse hotel and there was a bath in the bedroom,’ explains Lynette. ‘It was the best thing ever. In every house I’ve lived in since I’ve replicated that look.’ She continues: ‘I’ve always wanted to wake up and see something lovely. That’s why I took the wallpaper up the walls behind the bath and across the ceiling. I love birds and now they’re the first thing I see when I open my eyes.’ Lynette, a design coach who helps people put interior schemes together and runs the online homes store Maximalist Love, gets much of her inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest. ‘When I like the look of something, I create a digital moodboard and tag where everything

Downstairs, Lynette jazzed up the existing kitchen, added feature pendant lights over the island and a chalkboard behind the Aga, and she hung one of her trademark busy wallpapers in the dining area. ‘I found the wallpaper on eBay and fell in love with the pattern,’ she says. ‘It looks great behind the peacock blue sofa.’ In the living room, Lynette really went to town, designing it as her own personal space where she can unwind once the children are in bed. ‘I can’t sit and enjoy an empty room,’ she says. ‘I adore monochrome against colour – it’s so impactful, it lifts me up and clears my head. I bought the Emma J Shipley wallpaper online and had the black and white chevron carpet made to order. I love it in there. I pour myself a drink from the bar, lie back on the sofa with my music on and just chill.’ With the house all done, Lynette is now turning her attention to the outbuildings, which she plans to convert into an entertaining space, with a games room for the kids, a gym and guest bedrooms. ‘Just like the main house,’ she says, ‘the plan is for it to wow on every wall!’

ooking at their spacious, vibrant, light-filled home now, it’s hard to believe that back in 2012 when Sylwia Newman and her husband Peter first viewed the property – untouched for more than 20 years – it was dated and dark. But Sylwia wasn’t put off. ‘We needed to move from our small flat having had our son Joshua, who was just one, and were looking for a project,’ she says now. ‘I love space and light, and chose to view 1930s houses because they are wider than Victorian ones and I think they’re totally underestimated. Luckily, the loft had already been converted, giving us three double bedrooms and a single, which my husband was able to use as a study.’ The family stayed in their London flat for a month while builders knocked the kitchen into the adjoining dining room, installed a new white kitchen and a bathroom, and redecorated throughout. ‘It was a quick fix in neutral colours,’ says Sylwia, ‘because we didn’t think we’d stay here forever.’ A second child, Harry, came along in 2015, and in 2018 Sylwia gave up her career in human resources. In 2019, she launched a new business with a friend, Harriet Williams, selling vintage posters sourced from her native Poland, which she also displays in every room in her house. ‘They’re part of an art movement known as the Polish School of Posters,’ she explains. ‘It lasted between 1945 and 1989 during the

communist era, a time when everything was grey and state-controlled. The only creative outlet for artists and designers was in producing posters for films, theatres and exhibitions. They were so full of colour and joy that people started collecting them.’ With a bigger family and Sylwia working from home, the house started to feel cramped. ‘The boys were in bunk beds and we didn’t have enough storage,’ says Sylwia. Plus, the decor, especially the basic white kitchen, was uninspiring: ‘The house didn’t reflect our personalities at all.’ The couple discussed moving but, says Sylwia, ‘we really love Sydenham. We’re surrounded by green spaces and the area has come up a huge amount since we arrived, with new cafes and restaurants. We didn’t want to leave, but equally couldn’t face the cost and mess of building an extension.’ Instead, the couple decided to invest the money they would have spent on moving on renovating their kitchen. ‘I knew I wanted a bold and modern look but wasn’t quite sure how to get it,’ says Sylwia. She enlisted the help of interior designer Nicki Bamford-Bowes of & Then They Went Wild . ‘She’s a friend of a friend – I’d seen her work on Instagram (@andthentheywentwild) and loved it,’ says Sylwia. ‘The more we chatted, the more I realised that she was the perfect person to help us create the entire home we’d always dreamed of.’ Sylwia and House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 85

Peter had their hearts set on kitchen doors by Husk, in matt laminate on birch ply. ‘I initially wanted them to be pink,’ admits Sylwia, ‘but Peter wouldn’t swallow that!’ The couple compromised on a soft green/grey, which provides the perfect foil for a wow-factor terrazzo worktop. ‘We were originally thinking about a traditional stone counter,’ says Sylwia, ‘but it took very little persuading from Nicki to make us choose this one from Diespeker & Co instead. I’m so pleased we did.’ What appears to be a sleek, contemporary timber-panelled wall conceals a surprise: at a touch, secret doors spring open to reveal vast amounts of hidden storage. The panelling also covers an awkward chimney breast and houses the radiators. ‘I love having everything put away,’ says Sylwia. ‘A clutter-free kitchen feels so much bigger and allows pattern and colour to shine.’ The same panelling is also used on the kitchen island, pulling the look together. In the sitting room, which is open plan to the kitchen, soft pink paint – Light Peachblossom by Little Greene – is used on the walls, skirting and doors to help visually enlarge the space. A new black wall lamp from La Redoute adds a touch of mid-century style on a budget. With the ground floor finished, Sylwia turned her attention to the upstairs. playful shared space for two lively boys. The wildlife theme reveals the family’s love of animals. Two different striped wallpapers from Ferm Living reflect Sylwia’s love of graphic lines, turn an awkward ceiling into a design feature and help zone the boys’ separate areas. On the floor below, the boys’ old bedroom has become a stylish, Instagram-friendly office where Sylwia stores, photographs and showcases her posters. The couple’s serene bedroom is the result of more clever illusions. Before the renovation, Sylwia and Peter shared one wardrobe tucked into a small chimney alcove. Nicki designed a panelled wall concealing bespoke cupboards over the chimney breast and alcoves. ‘They use every millimetre of space,’ says Sylwia. ‘We even have special storage for Peter’s ties and my handbags.’ On the other walls, the same look is created by attaching strips of timber to the walls, which have been painted in Cromarty by Farrow & Ball. ‘I love pink and green as a colour scheme, so we’ve used it throughout the house,’ says Sylwia. Monochrome posters from Sylwia’s own collection provide the perfect finishing touch. ‘Working with Nicki was a dream,’ says Sylwia. ‘It was as if she could take ideas out of my head and turn them into reality. She encouraged me to be bold. Our home is now a joyful place, full of colour and with space we didn’t even know we had. Every single room makes us happy.’ HB 88 housebeautiful.com/uk

i

t was the view of uninterrupted countryside from the kitchen that made Jane Rockett fall for this property. ‘I love the spectacular sunsets from the back of the house,’ she says. ‘I also loved the large open-plan sitting room and antique bathtub. It really is my dream home.’ Jane did have some reservations about the property’s proximity to a main road, but that didn’t deter her. Moving hadn’t been on Jane’s radar, but when she saw the former pub online, she ‘fell in love with it and decided we just had to have it. I’m quite impulsive and often make rash decisions,’ she says – and this one has paid off as she and her husband Toby now have plenty of room for their family and a great space for socialising. The house was a blank canvas when they moved in, which was one of the things Jane liked about it. It had been partially renovated by the previous owners – along with limewashing the walls, they had also installed the vintage bath and taps. The wooden floor was already down but needed to be sealed and waxed. Known for her eclectic style, Jane says she has no rules when it comes to decorating. ‘I like to mix old and new and combine different looks,’ she explains. ‘There are 1970s influences here and Moroccan touches from the Rock the Kasbah store [rockthekasbah.net], but my top priority was to create an easy-to-live-in home, designed specifically to ensure my family and our dogs are comfortable.’ Jane places an importance on having a ‘common thread’ running through a house, so a theme of mustard and green creates a flow from room to room, contrasted with dashes of monochrome. She has also created vignettes throughout by displaying groups of beautiful objects together. ‘The house gets used as a location for photo shoots for my business,’ she says, ‘so things can change on a weekly basis. I like natural textures and am really into Berber rugs and Tamegroute ceramics from Morocco. I’m also a fan of fake coral and shells and pampas grass.’ It’s a captivating mix that has come together to create a fascinating family home a million miles from its days as a typical British pub.

hen Emma Clarke lived in town, she dreamed of a country house hidden in a cloud of blooms. Years later, she bought a lodge inland from the north Kent coast and – with her sense of style and appetite for experimentation at the ready – set about turning it into the home of her dreams. That said, the ‘dream’ transformation didn’t happen overnight. Northwood Lodge was built in the 1850s by a visionary entrepreneur who spotted the potential of Herne Bay as a holiday resort to compete with nearby fashionable Margate. He built himself a mansion and dower house in the local countryside, alongside this matching lodge with a stable and groom’s lodgings. Emma bought the house in 2012 from a pair of artists who’d lived there for a lifetime, and moved in with a team of builders, who took up residence for the following eight months. It was a testing time for all. ‘The house became virtually uninhabitable,’ recalls Emma. ‘We took out all the downstairs floors and replaced them with scaffolding floorboards, removed the windows at the back, refitted the 1960s staircase, knocked down walls between the kitchen, dining room and morning room and renewed all the services.’ The need for light – the house faces east/west – and a desire to make good all the existing period woodwork egged the team on. Upstairs, the dated avocado bathroom suite was taken out along with its onyx taps and shagpile carpet. A warren of tiny dressing rooms, cupboards and cell-like spare bedrooms was turned into one airy main bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The ceiling was raised, exposing some of the old rafters, and five new Velux windows, plus a small woodburning stove, were added. Emma’s interior style is eclectic: antique furniture, family heirlooms and vintage finds – some a little worn around the edges – jostle for space. ‘I love to set up little styled pockets of my belongings, then triangulate the colours to draw the eye, creating tableaux of odds and ends to show off my finds,’ she says. ‘I arrange glassware with china, books with family portraits, baskets with ancient houseplants – clustering House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 101

groups of paintings and prints so nothing in particular takes centre stage.’ In retrospect, she admits, this has been a nostalgia trip: ‘My childhood home was in Petersham, south west London – I seem to have recreated it.’ Emma’s subtle use of subdued colour has created a number of intimate spaces – private pools of warmth populated with generously upholstered furniture that make you want to sink into a chair and savour the comfort. Nothing is set in stone, however, as she likes to change things from time to time. She’s intrigued by the way colour can alter mood and often experiments with paint and fabric. As soon as the builders left, Emma set to designing and planting the gardens. She had always longed for a large plot, ever since she escaped London and her job as a filmmaker for the UK Film Council. ‘Part of the reason I instantly loved this house,’ she adds, ‘was its setting in the middle of its plot with gardens both front and back.’ At the front, the disused swimming pool was turned into an ornamental potager with raised beds packed with vegetables and herbs, and planted with apricot, pear, olive and fig trees, quinces, apples and gages. White wisteria and rambling roses climb up the front facade. It was Emma’s ambition to cover the walls with perfumed greenery and now, several years on, she has succeeded: the house has almost completely disappeared beneath leaves and blooms. At the back, a private Italianate space, scented with old-fashioned roses and dotted with fig trees, is bordered with 50ft yews and bay trees around a decked eating area with French metal furniture. ‘I wanted a space to eat and relax unseen from the road and not overlooked by neighbouring houses – a secret country house,’ she says. ‘You can quite easily imagine yourself to be in the depths of the countryside here – and I’ve styled the house to complete the illusion.’ When the transformation was finally complete, Emma decided to open her home to guests, offering bed and breakfast from time to time. ‘I love entertaining,’ she says, ‘although just in short bursts, and I secretly love to see the impact of the house on others, through their eyes – a pleasure shared.’ HB

STOOLS DESIGN A clever kitchen layout helps make the most of the available space

W

hat were you aiming to achieve in your new kitchen? Lots! We moved it to another room and then knocked down walls and the ceiling through to the loft to create height. We also added windows to bring in more light.

‘The original kitchen was done in the 1990s and was previously in another part of the house. It had low ceilings and not much daylight, and the layout just didn’t work for us.’ 106 housebeautiful.com/uk

Did you have a clear idea of your aims? Yes, I had quite a long wishlist – I knew I wanted a pantry and enough bins for all the different kinds of recycling. I was also keen to have lots of built-in display shelving for all my favourite crockery and other bits and bobs. Next, I wanted a boiling water tap, a large freestanding fridge-freezer and also quartz worktops. It was important to me to have a different style of kitchen than we had in our old house – not because I didn’t love the previous one, but because it would be a shame not to use this opportunity to go for something different. This was one of the reasons I chose British Standard – the cupboards arrive primed so you can paint them in any colour you want, and then repaint them later if you fancy a change.

Wicker brings a touch of nature, tying in with the vases on the shelf

Were there any challenges? Well, the pandemic certainly threw a few spanners in the works, but overall there wasn’t anything else major that went wrong. It was a challenge to fit in everything on my lengthy wishlist but the British Standard designer came up with lots of options to make it work. I still haven’t decided on a splashback or the island lamps, but I’ll get to those one day. What’s your favourite part of the space? The height, the big windows and the display shelves. This room didn’t have any windows before and now it has so much natural light, which I love. How has the new room changed family life? We learned to make sushi together during the pandemic, which has been a fun way to spend time with each other – and our sushi has come a long way from the first attempts. I love to invite friends over. I’m all for simple one-pot dishes – Finnish fish soup is a family favourite. I’ve been using the kitchen table as my home office desk, so I do spend most of the daylight hours in here. HB

‘This stylish bathroom is a perfect space for relaxing’ A striking tile design was the starting point for this modern scheme WORDS CAROLYN BAILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY ADAM CARTER

BATH The clean lines of this contemporary design balance the busy tiles

W

hat kind of look were you going for? Originally, we were thinking about a Moroccan theme, but once we started reviewing the layout and looking at different products, Nick decided he really liked the Ca’ Pietra Lily Pad tiles, so we based the whole room around this design. Nick was also keen to have a large walk-in shower but still wanted to retain a bath. And the brassware had to be matt black. How did you get started? The layout was easy to create because the room has such a large footprint. Nick wanted a space that’s functional as well as relaxing, so taking both of these things into consideration helped us develop the plan. For example, the seating under the window doubles up as concealed storage.

Nick van Gelder, a music producer and drummer, lives in a two-bed flat in north London. We talk to Lisa Kyme from Ripples about how she helped him plan the space

BASIN A hand-poured concrete basin features a unique pattern

Were there any particular challenges? We needed to keep the washing machine in the room as well accommodate the boiler, so it was necessary to install housing for both that would work well practically and aesthetically. Then the floor had to be levelled so the wet floor for the walk-in shower could be fitted. Also, an unused fireplace had to be blocked up to enable us to install the wall-mounted taps beside the freestanding bath. You’ve gone for a very dramatic look… Yes, the patterned tiles and concrete basin were must-haves for Nick, and we based the rest of the room around these – hence the bold colour scheme. This meant it was important to keep everything else quite minimal for a balanced look. It took a while to find the freestanding bath as Nick wanted a particular shape in a natural material – and he definitely didn’t want an acrylic one.

‘The room is very large but hadn’t been touched in years and was in a complete state of disrepair with several leaks, and electrical items that wouldn’t pass current regulations’ 108 housebeautiful.com/uk

And the best thing about the room? The strong colour – it works really well without being overwhelming. I also like the fact that there is somewhere you can just sit and chill. Nick was braver than a lot of clients when using colour, but this room is large enough to take it and now it’s a wonderfully bright and cheerful space. HB

‘Our attic was destined to become a chic bedroom’ Unused loft space has been turned into a cosy, characterful room WORDS SEÁN O’CONNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY VERONICA RODRIGUEZ

hy did you renovate this room? The house as a whole felt unloved when we first moved in, so Darren and I embarked on a top-to-bottom renovation. For the first few years we had just two bedrooms on the first floor, but we knew this attic space would make a brilliant main bedroom. As well as it being at the top of the house and giving us privacy, it also offered us the opportunity to have our own ensuite. We often have friends and family to stay, so now the bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs can be just for guests. Was the conversion straightforward? We used a building firm recommended by our neighbours and the work went really smoothly and was completed within the eight-week schedule. The builders also helped us with drawing up the plans and submitting them for approval.

‘The loft had never been used for anything other than storing rubbish and insulation. We needed to enlarge the space to make it usable.’ 110 housebeautiful.com/uk

How did you choose the decor? I knew I wanted to create a dramatic feel, so went for grey as it’s a softer version of the monochrome look, which I love. It could have felt a bit dark, but thanks to the two large skylights and glazed

double doors there’s lots of natural light. Painting the ceiling white also provided a contrast as well as reflecting light around the room. You’ve achieved a very cosy feel… Yes, having carpet in a bedroom is a must for me and natural sisal looks and feels warm. The bed is upholstered and layered with cushions, which also creates an inviting impression. Some of the cushions are covered in the same flowery fabric as the curtains and this floral aspect ZONING is important A colourful rug delineates to us – we also have plants on various surfaces, a separate area in the which bring an energy to the room.open-plan And displaying space personal items and pictures on the shelf above the bed has added an air of homeliness. What are you most pleased with? I think we’ve made the best use of what was a small dark space. The builders had a genius idea of installing a pocket sliding door to the ensuite, which we leave open when not in use to give a sense of openness. To create storage, we turned the area under the eaves into cupboards, and I added beading on the doors to create a panelled effect for a smart finishing touch. HB HB

Start the year as you mean to go on – these fast fixes and clever tricks will help you create space in every room of the house and organise your life

118 housebeautiful.com/uk

T I DY H O M E T I DY M I N D

IT ALL STARTS WITH A STREAMLINED HOME If your rooms are feeling cramped, bring a sense of openness and order with these easy ideas… Step into an uncluttered home and the first thing you notice is the calm, tranquil atmosphere. Even if you’re not a natural minimalist, the careful choice and placement of furniture, along with a few simple decorating tricks, will help you achieve a pared-back style.

ADOPT A ‘LESS IS MORE’ APPROACH Before buying anything new, assess how much you truly need, and whether it will improve your space. It’s also a good idea to plan storage around the amount you own, rather than choosing a piece of furniture and filling it up. By giving every item a home, there will be less opportunity for clutter.

THINK ABOUT SPATIAL PLANNING In any new layout for a room or entire home, take a tip from architects and consider the circulation space, thinking about how you move around the room itself and from one area to the next, ensuring the size and position of furniture won’t obstruct the route. Draw a scale plan and mark on furniture to be sure it will fit. Large-scale solutions needn’t encroach. For instance, it’s possible to have a customised media and storage wall that is just 40cm deep.

OPT FOR HARDWORKING FURNITURE The sleek, cohesive look of fitted furniture tailored to your home is great for creating a sense of space, but more flexible freestanding pieces and modular options can also be lined up for a streamlined effect. Remember, cupboards and wardrobes aren’t the only solution for clutter, as some sofas and beds have secret storage, too. Integrated space in the base of an ottoman bed provides a perfect place for spare bedding or anything else you need to store out of the way.

BE FLEXIBLE In open-plan spaces, aim to create zones to section off areas according to how they’re used. In a large living space, you could move a shelving unit from the wall and use it to divide the room. An open-back style of shelving, such as Content by Conran’s Elmari unit, allows for display without compromising the feeling of space, while a modular sofa, such as those in the Sofables range at DFS, can be adapted by adding or moving sections. Set up zones for different activities, then when you want to be close, just push the seats together to make one huge family hangout.

PHOTOGRAPH FURNITURE VILLAGE

DECORATING CHOICES Streamlining is as much about making clever decorating choices as it is about planning furniture arrangements. Concentrate on a calm colour palette for paint and wallpaper, and limit accessories to a few objects in beautiful materials as accents. Make the most of the natural light available, as this will open up a space and highlight favourite pieces of furniture. Stick to simple window treatments, ensuring curtain poles are long enough to allow curtains to be pulled right back to maximise the light, or fit neat blinds that open fully to let in daylight.

THE FASTEST DECLUTTERING FIX? CHOOSE SMART SHELVING º Use a mix of open shelving and cabinet styles to create a display unit that’s flexible enough to hide the things you don’t want on show. º Make sure your shelving is deep enough to hold your belongings, but narrow enough that it won’t compromise the square footage in your room. º Choose shelves that are modular, so they can work in any room size or type, and use to maximise your space throughout, from the kitchen to the bedroom, even the wardrobes. And lead the ultimate organised life with small additions such as box organisers and wall grids.

FAST FIXES FOR…

THE LIVING ROOM º Restrict decorative items to a single theme or colour – it’s a clever visual trick to create a calm look. º Pouffes and ottomans can be used for occasional seating, as well as for storage space inside and on top. Some sofa ranges have secret storage, too (see below left – House Beautiful’s Layla at DFS is similar). º Buy pretty boxes to collect things that have sentimental value – clear out less-loved items when you add new ones. º Choose wire baskets and cabinets and, not only will items be easy to spot, you’ll also be encouraged to keep them tidy. º When selecting a nest of tables, a design with slim legs ensures that even when the furniture is stacked, the look stays streamlined. º Create a control centre, setting aside one cabinet for small gadgets, spare keys and pens – and it will make it easier to find things. º When you’re in a furniture showroom, it’s hard to imagine how much space pieces will take up in your home, so take along a set of measurements and a tape measure. º Clear the area where you intend to place a new piece of furniture, create a paper template and place on the floor to get an idea of size. Don’t forget extra room for doors to open and people to walk past. º Closed storage looks tidier, but in a corridor or behind the sofa, a bookcase with open shelves makes it easier to access your items. º Short of space? A love seat or snuggler chair takes up less room.

FAST FIXES FOR…

THE HALLWAY º Coat hooks are a must to keep things organised, but be careful not to overload them or they will look messy. º If you have room for a bench, choose one with a useful storage shelf or drawers underneath - perfect for slippers, gloves and scarves. º A large, lidded basket placed under a hall table is a great place to collect things waiting to be taken upstairs, to a charity shop or to be returned to a friend. º Wall racks containing pigeonholes or pockets for each member of the family make a handy lost-and-found depot. º A fabric or wire-mesh noticeboard is a convenient spot for leaving messages, reminders or appointment letters. 120 housebeautiful.com/uk

T I DY H O M E T I DY M I N D

FAST FIXES FOR…

THE KITCHEN

º Open shelves are the best place for the items you love and use the most. They needn’t be new shelves – upcycle an old set with paint to suit your scheme. º Vintage jars look decorative on display, and it’s easy to find ingredients at a glance. º Regularly clear out kitchen cupboards, removing everything to give shelves a thorough clean and check for out-of-date items. º Use every inch of shelf space with an under-shelf basket, plate-stacking shelf or cutlery organiser: try Lakeland or A Place For Everything for a good selection. º Hang a rail for utensils near the hob so they’re always to hand. º A trolley on wheels makes a great additional worksurface that stores away neatly after use.

º It’s surprising how many things can be adapted for storage on a peg rail. Attach fabric loops to tea towels and oven mitts, or string leather cord through wooden items. º In a tight space, choose a dining table that extends or folds, together with stacking or folding chairs. Chairs can be hung from brackets on the wall when not in use. º Dressers come in many styles but, for maximum storage, opt for one with glazed doors to display favourite pieces, drawers for linens and cupboards to store seldom-used crockery. º Find a local joiner to make space-saving banquette seating with storage space inside. º Invest in a freestanding or built-in larder. As well as shelving, some have drawers and a marble shelf for food preparation.

THE BEDROOM ºUnderbed drawers are a neat and efficient place to store bedding in any size of bedroom, but if space is extremely tight, choose sliding panels instead of pullout drawers. ºAdd shoe racks to make the most of the space at the bottom of your wardrobe. Choose two- or three-tier models to maximise capacity. ºExtendable shoe racks adjust to fit the width of your wardrobe, cupboard or alcove. Check the fully extended size will be enough. ºShoe boxes keep your wardrobe clean and your shoes dust free. Those with drawer- or front-opening give easiest access. ºSweaters and shirts folded on hanging shelves take up less space in the wardrobe than they would hung separately on the rail. ºVacuum-pack out-of-season clothes. Compressed in purpose-made sealed bags they’ll take up minimal space. ºStorage behind the headboard is great for stashing magazines and books, and can clear floor space by replacing a bedside table. ºOttoman beds open from either the foot end of the bed or from the side. Opt for the kind that gives you easier access in the space you have. ºWork out the maximum size of wardrobe you can fit in your room. If you’re short of space, look for wardrobes with sliding doors. ºWardrobes with mirrored panels will help the room look more spacious as mirrors trick the mind into thinking the space appears bigger than it actually is. ºExtend fitted wardrobes to the ceiling for additional space and a seamless look.

FAST FIXES FOR…

THE BATHROOM ºA mirror-fronted wall cabinet is a practical solution in a tiny space. Choose an illuminated design for a good light and clear view. ºAdjustable wall shelving gives you the option to chop and change (see left). ºSlim wall cabinets with shallow shelves keep everything on view so unused bath accessories or cosmetics don’t accumulate at the back. º Wall-mounted furniture (see left) completely frees up the floor area to give a more spacious feel. º Fitted furniture optimises space, creating a sleek, co-ordinated look – and is low-maintenance with no hard-to-clean corners. º A countertop basin – as opposed to an integrated one – leaves more room for storage inside the vanity unit it stands on. º Units with a variety of shelves, cupboards and drawers allow you to display more decorative accessories, and hide other items away. ºOpt for a dual-fuel towel rail that’s connected to the central heating and also has an electrical heating element to warm towels in summer when the heating is off. º Don’t rely on just one towel rail in a busy bathroom. Install wall-mounted rails by the basin, bath and shower to keep plenty of towels always to hand. º Tall units with a small footprint make the most of the vertical space available, but don’t take up much floor area. º Corner shelves can make good use of a redundant area. Boxes, baskets and pots will organise the contents and keep them tidy. HB House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 123

If you can’t find paneer, you could substitute with the same quantity of halloumi.

Indian spinach and paneer curry This curry is made from chunks of a cottage-style cheese called paneer, in a sauce with fresh spinach, which gives it a naturally thick and creamy consistency. PREP & COOKING TIME 20MIN SERVES 4 » 3tbsp ghee or vegetable oil » 1 large onion, finely chopped » 2cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated » 2 garlic cloves, crushed » 1 green chilli, finely chopped » 400g paneer, cut into 2cm cubes » 1tsp garam masala » 1tsp ground turmeric » 1tsp cumin seeds 128 housebeautiful.com/uk

400g spinach, roughly chopped » Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper »

1 Heat 2tbsp of the ghee or vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and fry for 5min. Add the ginger, garlic and chilli, and continue to fry for a further 5-7min until everything is nicely caramelised. If it starts to look dry, add a little more ghee or oil. 2 While the onion is cooking, heat the

remaining ghee or oil in a non-stick frying pan. Add the paneer and fry for 7-8min, turning the cubes regularly until all the sides are golden. Remove to a plate. 3 When the onion is ready, add the spices and fry for 30sec, mixing well. Add the spinach to the onion along with 50ml water. Cook for 2min until the spinach is wilted. 4 Stir in the paneer and cook for a further 2min until the paneer is heated through. Season to taste and serve with rice or warm naan.

Rapid salmon ramen You can use the miso mix that comes in a packet with the noodles, otherwise add 1tsp miso paste. Then add whatever green vegetables you fancy. PREP & COOKING TIME 10MIN SERVES 1 » 1 salmon fillet, weighing approx 240g » 1tbsp olive oil » 204g miso ramen noodle pack » ¾tsp chilli flakes » 3 slices of fresh ginger, peeled » 2 pak choi, quartered lengthways » 3 sprigs of coriander » Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6. Start by cooking the salmon. Place a frying pan over a medium heat and add the olive oil. Once the pan is hot, place the salmon in the pan, skin-side down, and season with salt and pepper. Turn the salmon after 1min, then cook for a further min before transferring to the preheated oven to cook for 8min. 2 If using a ready-made miso ramen pack, place the noodles, chilli flakes, sliced ginger and ramen mix in a saucepan and pour 300ml boiling water over the top. Alternatively, you can whisk 1tsp miso paste into the boiling water with one serving of ramen noodles. Place the pan over a medium heat and stir. Add the pak choi and cook for 3min. 3 Pour all the ingredients into a bowl. Place the cooked salmon on top and sprinkle over the sprigs of coriander.

The ultimate mac & cheese This recipe really is the ultimate – it’s very creamy and the topping is lovely and crunchy, thanks to the panko breadcrumbs. Serve with a refreshing green salad to balance the cheese. PREP & COOKING TIME 30MIN SERVES 4 » 280g macaroni » 700ml full-fat milk » 1 bay leaf » 40g butter » 1 garlic clove, crushed » 3tbsp plain flour » 170g mature Cheddar cheese, grated » 60g Gruyère cheese, grated » 20g Parmesan cheese, grated » 1tsp Dijon mustard » Dash of Worcestershire sauce » Grating of fresh nutmeg » Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE TOPPING » 4 heaped tbsp panko breadcrumbs » 1tbsp finely grated Parmesan cheese » Pinch of smoked paprika 1 Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil and cook the macaroni according 130 housebeautiful.com/uk

to packet instructions. Drain and set aside. 2 While the pasta is cooking, make the sauce. Pour the milk into a saucepan and add the bay leaf. Heat over a medium heat until hot, but not boiling. 3 Once the milk is hot, melt the butter in a separate large, heavy-based pan, add the garlic and gently fry for 30sec or until aromatic and just starting to turn golden. Stir in the flour and cook for 1min. Slowly whisk in the hot milk a little at a time until combined and smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5min before stirring in the cheeses, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and nutmeg. Season to taste. Whisk again to make sure the cheeses have combined with the sauce. Remove the bay leaf. 4 Fold the cooked macaroni through the sauce and transfer to an ovenproof dish. Scatter over the breadcrumbs, Parmesan and paprika. 5 Place the dish under a hot grill for 2-3min until the topping is crunchy and golden.

Moroccan-spiced lamb Lamb chops or cutlets are a brilliant quick-fix supper as they only take about 8min to cook. Spicing them up with this yogurt marinade packs the lamb with flavour and tenderises the meat. PREP & COOKING TIME 20MIN SERVES 2 » 4-6 lamb chops, depending on size » 1tbsp olive oil FOR THE YOGURT MARINADE » 100g natural yogurt » 1tbsp olive oil » 1tbsp harissa paste » 1 garlic clove, crushed » 1tsp ground cumin FOR THE BULGUR WHEAT » 240ml chicken stock » 120g bulgur wheat » 150g green beans, trimmed and halved » 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil » Juice of 1 lemon » Handful of flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped » Handful of mint leaves, roughly chopped » 2tbsp pine nuts » Handful of pomegranate seeds » Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 In a large bowl, mix together the marinade ingredients along with a liberal sprinkling of salt and pepper. Add the lamb chops and coat well on all sides with the marinade. Set aside for 5min. 2 In a large saucepan, heat the stock and add the bulgur wheat. Simmer, covered, for 10-15min until most of the water has been absorbed. Remove from the heat, drain off any excess liquid and set aside. 3 While the bulgur wheat is cooking, bring a separate large saucepan of salted water to the boil and blanch the green beans for 3-4min until just tender. Drain and plunge into cold water to stop them cooking further. 4 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Lift the lamb chops out of the marinade bowl and cook for 4min on each side. Remove to a plate and cover loosely with foil to rest for 5min. 5 Fluff up the bulgur wheat with a fork before mixing in the green beans and remaining bulgur wheat ingredients. Season to taste and serve alongside the lamb chops.

Cook’s note

If you don’t have any yogurt, the marinade works just as well without. No harissa? Use 1tsp smoked paprika instead.

Chicken cacciatore This one-pot supper is a real crowd-pleaser. The falling-apart, tender chicken with comforting aromatics and Italian flavours of garlic, bay leaf, tomatoes and olives with a bit of chilli heat is gorgeous. Serve with rice, roast potatoes or polenta. PREP & COOKING TIME 30MIN SERVES 4 » 2tbsp olive oil » 8 boneless chicken thighs » 1 onion, finely chopped » 2 garlic cloves, crushed » 250ml red wine, such as Chianti » 1tsp chilli flakes » 100ml good-quality chicken stock » Handful of pitted black olives » 2 x 400g tinned plum tomatoes » 1 bay leaf » 4 sprigs of thyme » 2 sprigs of rosemary » 400g tinned cannellini beans, drained and rinsed » Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Lemony fettuccine alfredo The whispers of lemon through the cream, rich butter, salty caramel Parmesan and peppery flat-leaf parsley will make this pasta recipe one of your new go-to quick suppers. PREP & COOKING TIME 10MIN SERVES 4 » 500g fresh fettuccine pasta » 500ml double cream » 1 unwaxed lemon, thinly sliced » 1 garlic clove » 110g butter, cut into small pieces » 75g freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve » Grating of fresh nutmeg » 1tbsp flat-leaf parsley, chopped » Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil and cook the fettuccine for 5min, or according to the packet instructions. 132 housebeautiful.com/uk

2 While the fettuccine is cooking, place a deep frying pan or saucepan over a low to medium heat. Pour in the double cream and add the lemon slices and whole garlic clove. Next, add the small pieces of butter and whisk gently until they’ve melted. Remove and discard the garlic clove. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and fresh nutmeg. Season with freshly ground black pepper. 3 Drain the fettuccine, reserving one cup of the pasta cooking water. Add the pasta and the cup of cooking water to the pan of sauce and gently toss to coat. 4 To serve, top the fettuccine with more grated Parmesan cheese and the chopped flat-leaf parsley.

1 Heat the oil in a large, ovenproof casserole or saucepan over a high heat. Season the chicken thighs all over and add to the hot pan. Fry for 3-4min, turning halfway through cooking until browned on all sides. Remove to a plate. 2 Reduce the heat to medium and add the onion and garlic and fry for 3-4min until golden and soft. 3 Pour in the wine and let it bubble for 1-2min. Return the chicken to the pan and add the chilli flakes, chicken stock, olives, plum tomatoes, bay leaf, thyme and rosemary. Season well and simmer for 15-20min until the chicken is cooked and the sauce has nicely reduced. 4 Stir through the cannellini beans and season before serving. HB

THIS MONTH, I’M LOVING…

SWEET POTATOES

occurring sugars caramelising to form a sweet crust at the edges. Just give them a good scrub and a drizzle of olive oil and salt. They’re wonderful split open and topped with mashed avocado with plenty of lime, salt and coriander or with a smokey bean or meat chilli and a dollop of sour cream. Or try serving drizzled with a rich, salty miso butter and crushed peanuts. Their velvety texture and vibrant colour make them an excellent choice for soups. Among the endless possibilities, my favourite is to use them as a base for a vegan laksa. Peel a large sweet potato, then chop into pieces and boil in a mixture of coconut milk, vegetable stock and laksa paste (you can buy this or make it yourself). Once soft, blend to make a soup base then add noodles, chopped peanuts and raw vegetables for a healthy, warming supper. As the name suggests, sweet potatoes lend themselves excellently to sweet dishes too. Scoop out the flesh once baked and swirl into ice cream, bake into a loaf cake spiked with cinnamon and ginger and topped with sharp cream cheese icing, or go all out with a classic Southern American sweet potato pie. ONE INGREDIENT, THREE GENIUS USES

Mixed nuts

Got a nut glut after the festive period? Here’s how to put them to good use... Make a dukkah Grind a handful of nuts with a pestle and mortar or spice grinder along with 1tbsp sesame seeds, 1tsp whole cumin seeds and coriander seeds, a large pinch of salt and a generous grind of black pepper. Add to salads, hummus, soups or anything that needs a bit of texture and spice. Use in a DIY granola Mix nuts, rolled oats, a little salt, honey and coconut or olive oil then bake on a large baking sheet – cheaper and more delicious than the shop-bought version. Create epic popcorn Roast nuts on a baking sheet until browned. Add to popped popcorn with salt, brown sugar and cinnamon.

With their high fibre and vitamin A and C content, crowd-pleasing sweet potatoes fall firmly in the ‘superfood’ category. Peak season is from October to March, but they’re widely available all year round, which is one of the reasons they’re so useful. Like the potato, they originate from South America, but there the similarity ends. Claims that sweet potatoes can be happily substituted into any potato dish and vice versa aren’t entirely true. In reality, you’re not always going to get the desired effect from swapping one for the other. Sweet potatoes soften more easily and don’t crisp up as well due to their higher moisture and lower starch content. But treat them right and you’ll enjoy the rewards. The rich, dense flesh makes them a wonderful vessel for a vast array of flavours and textures. Sharp and hot ingredients counter their honey-like flavour, so using them alongside Mexican or East Asian elements such as citrus, chilli or ginger works well. When cooked, they’re very soft, so I like to add texture with crushed nuts, toasted breadcrumbs or raw vegetables. Baking whole is the easiest way to cook them. Their relatively high sugar content means they roast beautifully, the naturally

GIVE YOUR GARDEN SOME LOVE

THIS WINTER You may be counting down the days until spring, but there’s plenty of joy to be found in your outdoor space at this time of year

136 housebeautiful.com/uk

G A R D E N I N S P I R AT I O N

WHAT TO DO NOW (& NEXT) The start of a new year is the time to take stock and start planning for the months ahead, from what to plant and seeds to sow, to how to care for wildlife. Use our go-to checklist below for the next few weeks…

JANUARY JOBS

TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO A WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

However big or small your garden or outdoor space is, you can transform it into a safe haven for birds and insects. When it comes to birds, give them a feeder and they will come. Ideally, leave out food with a high fat content (think grated cheese) as this will help small birds stay warm. Also include grains and nuts for balance. Mix up the foods you leave out as this will encourage difference species. It’s not just birds though – put out a dish or shallow container of water for other wildlife that needs to drink. You can also make your own insect or bug hotel; just keep it sheltered.

º PREPPING Deadhead winter pansies and clear away any soggy perennial stems. If you’ve been collecting seeds over the past year, sort them and decide which ones you want to use. Remove any weeds from your veg plot and dig over the soil. º SOWING You’ll need patience to sow seeds this early, but if you begin now, you’ll be rewarded later in the year. As well as using new compost, you’ll also need to clean everything that comes in contact with the seeds. Seed more thinly than at other times of the year, and check seeds and seedlings every day so you’re able to act before problems occur. Sow now for a super summer crop of flowers, veg and herbs – we love dahlias, geraniums, petunias, basil and chillies. º CARING The coldest month of the year, January is hard work for birds especially. Check any bird boxes and make sure they are secure and haven’t rotted or been damaged.

FEBRUARY JOBS º PREPPING Cut back ivy or other climbers that have become overgrown. If you have an allotment, now is the time to make a start. Your main job this month is to prepare the beds before spring. And get your cloches ready for any early sowings. º SOWING You might do most of your planting of summer-flowering bulbs in spring, but you can make a head start on some in February – lilies and agapanthus can both be planted in containers now. º CARING Most wildlife will still be hibernating, but hedgehogs might make an early appearance. If some come to visit your garden, leave out water for them as well as meat-based cat or dog food – they’ll be hungry.

House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 137

IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE HOUR TO SPARE… …sharpen your shears and secateurs and start cutting back. Chop deciduous grasses, such as stipa and miscanthus, to the ground; and ornamental willows and dogwoods to 10-20cm high. Shape late-flowing shrubs and clematis, and if you didn’t prune lavender in autumn, cut stems just above buds that are about to break, don’t go too far down into dead wood or it may not come back.

TIME TO NURTURE AND NOURISH

Get ready to feed your plants. They’re about to have a huge growth surge and it would really help them get off to a good start. If you have time, dig in well-rotted organic matter but, for a quick fix, sprinkle a balanced fertiliser onto the soil.

PLANT THESE SEEDS NOW Green shoots are a few months away yet, but this is the perfect time to get going with seeds, either in the ground or indoors. º Cloches, mini tunnels and cold frames can all really help to get the planting party started at this time of year. The slight protection they offer from the frost makes it possible to sow all sorts of seeds, from peas, beetroots and carrots, to sweetpeas and lettuces. They can be sown directly into the ground, but lettuces and sweetpeas do best planted into individual pots and placed into a cold frame. As the sun gains strength, keep an eye on the temperatures underneath the glass or plastic – it’ll soon be warm enough that you’ll need to open up the frame or cloche during the day. º Sow broad beans directly into the soil. You can do this without any protection at this time of year if you find the sunniest, most sheltered place possible. º You can plant a huge variety of seeds indoors if you have some sort of seed propagator. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy – just a seed tray with a cover that has ventilation, placed in a warm spot. Go for lobelia, cosmos, geraniums, kale and tomatoes. Once the seeds have germinated, move them to the brightest place you can, as they need plenty of sunlight to keep them from getting leggy.

G A R D E N I N S P I R AT I O N

GET YOUR GARDEN SPRING READY Put in the prep now, in both your garden and greenhouse, and you’ll reap the rewards later. Here are some essential cold-weather jobs.

IN THE GARDEN º Clean all your tools (including secateurs and hoes). º Sprinkle some fertiliser around shrubs and along the base of hedges. º Clear away soggy leaves from patios and decking. º Scrub any empty pots and seed trays ready for sowing. º Sort and clean canes and cloches.

IN THE GREENHOU SE

BUY NOW, SAVE MONEY Fill your garden with spring- and summer-flowering plants without spending a fortune. It’s possible to buy them for very affordable prices if you know where to look.

º Give the glazing a good wash. º Tidy up, removing broken pots and debris that could hide unwanted guests. º Improve the shading and heating ready for spring. º If there are any sunny days, ventilate the greenhouse to avoid it getting too humid.

º Shop locally – it’s a great way to get cheap or even free plants. Look for plants swaps, plant fairs or on local recycling websites. º You can often find seeds at the local supermarket or online. Visit dobbies.com for a huge selection at low prices, while moreveg.co.uk supplies seeds in smaller numbers. º Consider the discount tables at garden centres, where plants that have been neglected are sold off cheaply. With care they’ll usually recover. º Plants sold in supermarkets and discount shops are often cheap, but may not have been well-cared for, so keep your eye out for newly arrived stock in good condition. º For bedding or vegetables, buy small plants, such as plug plants, to save money and time as the really hard work of germination is done for you. º With slower-growing shrubs, don’t buy tiny. A small specimen may not flower for years. º Look out for special offers on websites and sign up with online nurseries as they frequently have flash sales and discounts. º When buying plants, look out for these signs that tell you they’re healthy: lots of leaves and shoots; the top of the compost is weed-free, moist and a dark colour; and there are no yellowing roots poking through the base of the pot. House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2022 139

THINK TREES AND HEDGES Now’s a great time to plant trees and hedges. From November to March they can be bought bare root, meaning dug out of the ground and sold without containers. As they haven’t been looked after in pots, they’re cheaper and their roots are likely to be more developed so will establish more easily in your garden.

GETTING TO THE ROOT Some plants are sold as root-balled – these have been dug up in the same way as bare root, but lifted with the soil still around the roots to help them survive the journey to your garden. Root-balled and bare root plants are ordered unseen, which can be nerve-wracking. Take advice from the retailer about the right size and number.

PREP YOUR BACKYARD THE SUSTAINABLE WAY Even though your outdoor space might not actually be green in the middle of winter, you can make sure your approach is. These tips and tricks will keep your garden ecofriendly while you wait for spring. º RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Turn your fir into woodchip mulch with a shredder (hire one if you don’t own one). You can also collect the fallen needles and use those as mulch for blueberries. º REUSE YOUR PLASTIC POTS As you won’t be able to recycle them via kerbside recycling, the best solution for pots is to reuse them. Clean them now ready for use later in the spring and summer, or bring them in and use them for houseplants. º STORE YOUR RAINWATER Turn the wet days of winter into a positive – install a 140 housebeautiful.com/uk

water butt to collect rainwater now that you can reuse later during dry periods. It’s perfect for both the garden or greenhouse, and the bonus is the non-purified rainwater is better for overall plant health.

Decide whether you’d like a deciduous or evergreen variety. If you want screening all year round, go for evergreens like laurel, yew or privet. If you’d prefer to have seasonal changes or to let more light in during winter, choose deciduous plants such as beech or roses. Also consider how formal you’d like your hedge to be. Evergreens tend to be neat, almost like green walls, but deciduous plants like roses, lilac and flowering currant are more loose and relaxed. The neater the plant, the more work is involved in keeping it pristine. Finally, think about height and size. Low hedges form an edge rather than a screen: lavender, box and hebes are all good for this. But if you want shading, screening or shelter, you’ll need taller plants that grow more quickly. For 6ft-tall hedges, choose laurel, privet or beech, and buy them quite big if you can, at least 4ft high, otherwise you’ll wait for years before they reach the height you want. Whatever size, but especially if you’re putting in taller and evergreen plants, it’s important to keep them watered. Even in winter, evergreens lose water from their leaves so need a good steady supply to their roots.

THE SIZE IS RIGHT If your garden is small, you might not want a tall tree. For a small option, around 6ft, look for dwarf rootstock, where the top of the tree has been grafted on to a trunk with very limited growth. Some are even small enough to survive in planters. For something a little bigger there are varieties of crab apple, cherry trees and mountain ash that are quite small. But watch out for the ‘eventual size’ as many can grow 10 metres tall. Also think about what you want the tree for. If it’s to screen, it needs to be positioned carefully. Trees are difficult to move so it’s worth imagining a tree in different spots in the garden before planting.

G A R D E N I N S P I R AT I O N

ENTERTAIN IN YOUR GARDEN (EVEN IN WINTER) OK, yes, it’s cold and no one wants to freeze. But with the vast array of stylish firepits and chimineas to choose from, a garden party in midwinter isn’t such an outlandish idea. As long as it’s dry – or your outdoor space is undercover – all you need is comfy seating and an abundance of throws and cushions, and you have all the essentials to create a spot to spend time with friends and family. Gather around a firepit (Wayfair has a good selection) and the chilly temperatures will barely register. We suggest accompanying a winter garden party with a cider hot toddy: heat 600ml apple cider, 200ml water, 1 sliced lemon, and 150g sugar in a pan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Stir in 400ml whisky, divide among eight glasses and garnish with cinnamon sticks. Mini cucumbers

L

ast year, I grew cucumber ‘Picolino’ (half-length mini cucumbers) in my pots and it was one of the most successful crops I’ve had. First, a tip: don’t grow from seed. For years, I’ve started with plug plants, which are pre-grown, young plants, either seedlings or cuttings grown in trays or single units. This cucumber variety is delivered from April, so get ordering now (try brooksidenursery.co.uk). If you don’t have a greenhouse, wait and plant plug plants outside when the risk of frost has passed and the weather has warmed up. Until then, keep them in pots under cover or on a sunny windowsill. You will be able to pick them from July. Water and feed little and often, keeping the soil moist to ensure a crisp, crunchy crop. Delicious.

THIS YEAR IT’S ALL ABOUT HOUSEPLANTS AND NATURAL GARDENS

S

ome gardening styles never fall out of favour, but the dawn of a new year is a good time to check out the latest trends and freshen up your space for the months ahead. At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year, most of the gardens focused on a streamlined aesthetic and the use of natural products. There was a real sense of nature’s warmer hues making a comeback – think of wicker, wood, grasses and rusting metals. But the new garden trends aren’t just about neutrals – moody hues, dark pink, purple, silver and orange are also set to be popular for 2022. Bring the style into your space with asters, salvias and a plethora of soft-toned ornamental

grasses along with dahlias and gladioli: it’s an easy way to create a fantastic display. Gaura will be a big player too, which is good news as it has a long flowering period and adds to the diversity of small-space container gardening. Houseplants continue to be key for 2022. Big varieties, such as rubber plants, bird of paradise and banana plants are my hot tip. Try growing cuttings in water dotted around the house in glass vases – they look beautiful. My other prediction for the next big thing. You heard it here first. Turn the page for Isabelle’s list of plants to grow for the new year. Follow her on Instagram @thebalconygardener

How to...

CHOOSE THE BEST WINDOW BOX FOR YOU

N

ow is the time to get ahead of the game if a window box is on your to-buy list. Choose one with drainage holes; if it doesn’t have any, make sure it’s suitable for you to create some with a drill or a hammer and nail. Placing a window box in a south-facing position? Steer clear of metals and materials that heat up quickly (you’ll be forever watering it). Stone and clay are better for a sunny aspect as they’re porous and allow the plant to access oxygen in the soil and not

become waterlogged. If you’re placing them in a cooler position, metals are a smart choice. You need to bear in mind weight, too. Your window box must be secure, so if you’re not fixing it in place with brackets (a must for a balcony), go for something heavy that’s not going to fall off its ledge when the container is drier and lighter. The best all-round material to use is fibreglass or GRP (glass reinforced plastic). It’s light, doesn’t overheat, comes in lots of colours and, the added bonus, it’s sustainable.

he incredible House Beautiful flooring collection at Carpetright just got even better. Say hello to Sensation, an innovative range of premium oak laminates in six stylish shades including this pretty-as-a-picture Candy Cane (left and above), a lovely painted oak rose laminate with a delicate pink tint. Each beautifully crafted plank features grooves along the edge for a real floorboard effect, as well as a semi-matt finish that cleverly manages to reflect the light while also disguising the dust! Designed to work with underfloor heating for the cosiest of cosy homes, each plank is also hydro-sealed to repel water, so you can enjoy Sensation in any room, from the lounge and hall, to the kitchen and bathroom. And fitting couldn’t be simpler, thanks to the ingenious Uniclic system, which ensures individual planks are slotted together quickly and easily. Our verdict? A total Sensation! Open house Radio and TV presenter Gaby Roslin loves fresh flowers and a good bargain and said, ‘Our cushions start at £250, I don’t think you’ll be wanting them.’ So I quoted Pretty Woman: ‘Big mistake. Big, huge. You’re right. There’s no way on earth I’d spend £250 on a cushion, let alone one of yours.’ I went to John Lewis and bought some orange velvet ones to go on our new pale blue grey sofas.

and painted it. Every now and again I paint it a different colour. At the moment, it’s pale grey on top with dark grey legs. The celeb home I’d like to look in is…

All of them! In 2009, I did a TV show called Celebrity Fantasy Homes, where I took celebs

My favourite room is…

The bedroom, where I sleep, record my podcasts and do online workouts five or six times a week. I have weights and a mat. Oh and I walk eight or nine miles a day.

My wardrobe because people know me for my Shopping In Your Wardrobe videos on Instagram. Nobody sees the rest of my house.

My walls are…

Outside my window now is…

White. We have a very small kitchen, so in lockdown I wanted to lighten it up. I painted the walls and floors white and our old Ikea units in a very pale grey organic Lakeland paint. It looks like a new room.

A Californian lilac plant. It flowers purple in spring. We have a weeny garden and the plant’s gone a bit mad so it’s getting snipped down.

My Zoom backdrop is…

Our small Victorian terraced house in London with my husband [publisher David Osman], my daughter who’s in her final year at Uni, and my 14-year-old daughter. My dad’s also only a mile away.

My childhood home is…

Where my dad lives now. I recently went through a cupboard in my old bedroom and found a some pottery I made at school. Right now I am…

Writing something, on BBC Radio London and That Gaby Roslin Podcast is in full flow for season two – we had Miranda Hart for our Christmas special. I’m also supporting Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil appeal. They helped me when my mum died 25 years ago. My dinner party table top is…

Laden with fresh, colourful flowers, but everything else is white or pale grey. If we’re eating outside I go full-on bright with neon napkins. My favourite homeware store is…

Actually I shop anywhere and everywhere. We recently replaced our sofas and I wanted some cushions. I went into a smart place where the man looked me up and down in my khaki trousers and sweatshirt

My biggest home extravagance is…

Our new sofa.com sofas. They’re the last thing we spent a lot of money on. The biggest bargain in my home is…

My favourite object from my travels is…

Anything picked up in Africa. My dad was born in Zimbabwe; it’s my second home. I have loads of carvings and paintings from there.

‘If I walk past a house and their curtains are open, I’ll peek inside’

Our pullout wooden dining room table from Ikea that we bought when we moved in. A big round table from my old house didn’t work here so I went to Ikea and bought one on display for less than £100. I then sanded it down

Every Sunday I’ll be…

Doing a radio show on BBC Radio London. If I had to work seven days a week, I’d be happy. I love my job. It’s all I’ve wanted to do since the age of three. In January, I celebrated my 35th anniversary in the industry. I can’t believe it! Gaby is an ambassador for the end of life charity Marie Curie. Welcome The most fascinating thing about interiors is seeing trends develop. How we live is being reflected in what we can buy – and there’s been a real response to our new ways of living, whether it’s modular furniture, clever tech or extending our living spaces outdoors. Most of us have adapted to how we now work and live in our homes and some of these changes will stay with us for ever. So whether you go back to grabbing a coffee on your way to work or continue brewing your own at a leisurely pace at home (a good reason to invest in a new coffee machine, or better still a beautiful breakfast bar), we hope you feel inspired by our round-up of 2022’s newest interiors trends on the following pages. Enjoy!

TIME-OUT NOOK

Now that so many of us have become more familiar with our kitchens and living areas (due to lockdown, working and schooling from home or all of the above), it’s all about carving out some time and space for indulging in those little rituals that help make a house feel like a home. Create a zone in your kitchen for a bistro table or pull up a couple of seats to your worktop to form the perfect spot for a relaxed morning coffee or leisurely lunch. Enjoy.
