WHEN HARRISON FORD took off from Santa Monica Airport in his WWII vintage plane on March 5, the setting was picture-perfect for one of the movie star pilot’s cherished scenic afternoon getaways: cloudless blue sky, scant wind and panoramic views of the Pacific below. But when engine trouble forced the 72-year-old Star Wars actor into an emergency crash landing in a densely populated area of L.A., the scene seemed plucked straight from one of Ford’s action An avid pilot movies. “I saw a for over plane descending 20 years, Ford as I was running, (left, in 2014) navigated his and then I heard a vintage plane ‘boom’ when it (below, at the was falling,” says crash site on Ben Hubley, March 5) onto

AN AVIATION EXPERT BREAKS DOWN THE CRASH

Ford’s crash landing has in fact helped solidify his status as a respected pilot. “Harrison did everything perfectly,” aviation expert Rick Dake says of how Ford handled his plane’s apparent engine failure. In World War II, “a lot of new pilots crashed that [same model of] airplane. If the engine stopped, the plane would want to flip over on its back. Harrison Ford made a 180-degree turn with the engine seizing up on him. That alone is testament to the great ability he had.” Dake suspects the actor made a calculated decision to attempt to land on the golf course. (Locals have protested how close the airport is to houses.) “He was able to keep that plane away from the houses and land it with the least impact on the community,” he says. “He was doing exactly what an excellent aviator would do.”

PERSONAL STORIES

Endometriosis is an isolating disease because people ABOUT GIVING don’t want to talk about it. It is something deeply priBACK vate and personal. I have always displayed symptoms of endometriosis, which is when the uterine lining cannot be expelled with a woman’s period and grows outside the uterus. In high school, the symptoms—bloating, cramping, severe pain in the abdomen area—were strong enough to keep me home from school several days a month. I missed a week of my life every month for 23 years. When I was finally diagnosed at 36, I had surgery which removed the excess tissue that had taken over my womb and wrapped itself like a tourniquet around my intestines. This is one of the leading causes of infertility in women. At 38, I was told that I would never have children naturally and had only a 10- to 15-percent chance with in vitro. When you’re staring down the barrel of your 40th birthday and hear you can’t have kids because this disease went undiagnosed for so many years, it’s devastating. It galvanized me to start the Endometriosis Foundation of America. Our goal is to raise awareness so that no young girl has to wonder what is wrong with her like I did for all those years. My daughter Krishna [now 5] was a miracle. I want her and all women to know their body is theirs to take care of. We need to be proactive about our health and not accept that a disease should just be accommodated. —REPORTED BY LIZ McNEIL

She was joined by 50 guests—including husband Derick Dillard—at A Mommy’s Butterfly Midwifery in Tontitown, Ark., for a fete thrown by her midwife teacher, Venessa Giron. Partygoers indulged in cake (and piña colada cupcakes!) and wrote words of encouragement on a “labor of love” board. Guests were encouraged to donate towards supplies for the couple’s planned home birth or give gift cards. “We are ready now,” says Jill, 23, who was also showered the next weekend at a small party at the Olive Garden. “It’s superexciting.”

Empire

Not hooked on this soap about No. a dysfunctional dynasty? It’s time to catch up! DRAMA Initially Empire’s breakout success could be explained in one word: “Cookie.” Just out of prison and hell-bent on being a thorn in the side of her ex-husband, black music mogul Lucious Lyon, she’s played by Taraji P. Henson as a creature with tentacles that grasp at every chance and choke every enemy. The diva has a perfect foil in Terrence Howard as terminally ill Lucious, whose soft hiss of a voice is like whiskey sprayed through an atomizer. But the show is driven less by corporate shenanigans—the label is preparing an IPO—than by the tender yet cutthroat relationships of Lucious, Cookie and their three sons. Family bridges are burned, then rebuilt. Still, if Cookie has anything to do with it, some of those are likely to be detonated in the finale. (FOX, March 18, 8 p.m.)

Cinderella

A tale as old as time and with new magic FAMILY How does director Kenneth Branagh reinvent the tired story of a girl dumped on her ash by a vile step-clan? Happily, he doesn’t—he just puts total faith in the tale. Cinderella arrives in sumptuous fashion, starring Lily James (Downton Abbey) as Ella, kind but not cloying. The same is true of Prince Charming, played by Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden. There are many lovely touches, including Ella’s mouse pals and Cate Blanchett’s witchy but gorgeously costumed stepmommie dearest. This one’s a winner—take the family and vacuum out the cinders later. (For more on Cinderella, see page 62.)(March 13, PG)

Breaking up but not breaking down COUNTRY The autobiographical album is nothing new, but Moorer isn’t kidding around: Believing, which is more about wounds received than wounds healed, touches not only on her breakup with husband Steve Earle but on the experience of raising their autistic son— summed up by “Mama Let the Wolf In,” a song both hard-strumming and self-castigating. But Moorer, a superb singer, has too much edge, drive and energy to wallow, and her lyrics pare the throbbing pain down to a minimal plainness: “I lost my crystal ball/Found me a wrecking ball.” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” Songs about which she covers here, fits right in. Jepsen has released since her bubblegum breakout single “Call Me Maybe, ” the similarly crush-inspired “Like You” sounds like an instant classic. ritical fans, catty women, crowded dates: Falling in love on The Bachelor has always presented a unique set of relationship hurdles. But for Chris Soules and Whitney Bischoff, who got engaged last November at the end of his season of the hit ABC reality romance show, navigating the logistics of starting a life together may be their biggest challenge. Bischoff, 29, a Chicago-based fertility nurse, will have to uproot her life to move to the tiny town of Arlington, Iowa, where her fiancé, 33, has deep roots and owns and operates a profitable corn farm. But while other contestants balked at the idea of moving to a town of 429 people—even for “Prince Farming,” as he was anointed by the show—the bubbly blonde says she doesn’t see it as a sacrifice. “It’s always been important for me to stand on my own two feet,” she says. “But I would not have accepted the proposal if I wanted something different. I’m so in love.” The couple—who will spend the next several months in L.A. while Soules competes on Dancing with the Stars—sat down with PEOPLE to talk about their future.

and I saw how she reacted to being on the farm, I felt like I could see a part of her life being in Arlington. And seeing her with my family, I felt like she was a missing piece. The idea of moving to a small farm town was a thread throughout the season [see box]. How important was it to you to find someone who could live there? CHRIS: There is a part of me that is

self-conscious about Arlington. Not everybody is willing to live in a community that small. It was an issue when I was on The Bachelorette with Andi [Dorfman], and it was always something that was in the back of my mind throughout the process of being on The Bachelor.

DOWN ON THE FARM Back on his farm “it’s all corn and soybeans, and we raise hogs,” says Soules. Not to mention hard work. “We work 15 to 18 hours a day sometimes, and I’m there, on the tractor, making things happen.”

What was your take on it, Whitney? WHITNEY: I was the last girl to go

home with him, but maybe that was a little bit of an advantage because I got to hear everyone’s take. By the time I saw it, I knew it was going to be small. I can’t say I knew it was going to be that small, but I was prepared!

TOP: NEAL KUEHL

Chris, you had told Andi that there was an “opportunity to be a homemaker” in Arlington. Whitney has a successful career. Do you want a wife who works or who stays at home? CHRIS: I want someone who has

both, to a certain extent. Someone who has a career and is driven, like Whitney, and now wants to have the next chapter and be a mother. WHITNEY: My entire life I always knew I wanted to be a wife and a mom, but I think it’s important to establish yourself and work hard. My career is something that defines me. It’s important to me, and it’s something I’m passionate about. But once I have kids, absolutely I would love to be able to stay at home with them. CHRIS: I want Whitney to be happy— that’s most important, [whether] it’s working and raising children or being a stay-at-home mother. I think it’s a blessing to be able to stay at home. You can always go back to your career. [Dads] stay at home too, though that is something I don’t plan on being! Will you move to Iowa right away? WHITNEY: We’re moving to L.A. [for

Inside the Tiny Town of Arlington, Iowa Chris and Whitney crashed a glamorous wedding on The Bachelor, but date nights in Iowa will be decidedly more low-key. The nearest movie theater (just one screen!) is “a solid 20 miles away,” says Soules. And pizza delivery? “No way! We’re in the middle of nowhere.” And Whitney will surely become a regular at Arlington’s only commercial business: Charley’s Quik Shop. “You can get everything there,” says Soules of the gas station mini-mart. “Six-packs of beer, chips, Advil, toilet paper. I spend a lot of time there!” Dancing with the Stars] first. But I own my place in Chicago and don’t plan on selling that. I’m keeping my job, but I’ve kind of switched roles a bit. It offers me a lot of flexibility so I can work from anywhere. I think it will be a good transition for us to start the journey together in L.A., and then we can take the next step. CHRIS: From L.A. to Arlington. A great transition. They’re similar places! What do you look forward to about life in Arlington? CHRIS: Building a family together

system and group of girls back home. When it comes to my job or my friendships, anything I focus on I’m going to give 100 percent. CHRIS: But we’ll get there in Arlington. It might take some time. espite earning six Oscar nominations (with one win, for The Reader) and starring in one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, Titanic, Kate Winslet is still seeking career advice—from her older kids Mia, 14, and Joe, 11. “They do very much have an opinion on what I do and don’t do these days,” she says, laughing. So when she was asked to star as malevolent leader Jeanine in the Divergent series, based on Veronica Roth’s bestsellers, they said, “ ‘Yeah, Mom, you should definitely do it!’ The idea that their mom would play this baddie was incredibly exciting,” she says. Happily creating a new chapter in her life with husband Ned Rocknroll, their son Bear, 1, and several new roles, Winslet isn’t at all fazed about turning 40 this year. “I don’t know why, but I’ve never felt more confident and happy.”

Winslet plays her first true villain in Jeanine, who hunts Shailene Woodley’s Tris in the series’ second film. “We were looking for power and command and smarts, which Kate delivers in spades, but she also gave Jeanine style and glamour,” say producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher. Winslet says her intimidating onscreen persona didn’t freak out her kids. “I’m their mom, and they’re never scared of me! So, no, the crazy act didn’t work on them.” She’s on a roll—with Ned Rocknroll.

Winslet married the British businessman (born Abel Smith, he’s the nephew of Virgin mogul Richard Branson) in 2012 and welcomed baby Bear a year later. She credits her husband with helping her find balance between her movie roles and family time at their home base in the U.K. And she’s on a busy streak with up to five films coming out this year, including Oscar hopeful Steve Jobs, which she’s shooting now. “My creative life in the last few years has been really, really colorful for me. Wozniak, now 31, is in Orange County jail facing trial in the upcoming months on two counts of felony murder in the May 2010 deaths of his neighbor Samuel Herr, 26, an Afghanistan war veteran, and Juri “Julie” Kibuishi, 23, a college student studying fashion. (His former fiancée, Buffett, 27, has been charged as an accessory after the fact but is free on bond and denies any involvement.) Police zeroed in on Wozniak after he pocketed money from Herr’s bank account and arrested him at his bachelor party just two days before the wedding. “I’m crazy and I did it,” he confessed to police. “He was a financial mess,” said Det. Michael Delgadillo, according to grand jury testimony. “He had no way of paying for the wedding or the honeymoon. He wanted to go on a cruise, and he had no way of paying for it.”

aniel Wozniak had a lot to celebrate: The wellknown Costa Mesa, Calif., theater actor was getting married in a little more than a week, and he and his beautiful actress fiancée, Rachel Buffett, had both scored lead roles in a local production of the musical Nine. But underneath his joyful, charismatic facade, Wozniak was hiding secrets that quickly turned deadly. On the verge of being evicted from his apartment and without the money he needed for his wedding or honeymoon, police say, an increasingly desperate Wozniak carried out a shocking get-rich-quick scheme that ended in a brutal double homicide. “I didn’t think he was capable of this,” says a longtime friend of Wozniak’s. “Then again, anyone is capable of anything when your life is crashing around you. 1. Cinderella’s iconic ball gown “needed to be big but look like it was made of air,” says costume designer Sandy Powell, a three-time Oscar winner. A corset (no CGI) gave James that tiny waist, and she and Madden “had to develop ways of dancing so they wouldn’t be treading on the skirt.” Jokes Madden: “There were three of us in the relationship. It was Cinderella, her dress and me!” 2. Cate Blanchett collaborated with Powell on the stepmother’s look, inspired by steely ’40s sirens like Joan Crawford. Says Powell of Blanchett: “She likes clothes, and she knows how to wear them.” 3. “They’re ugly from within. We wanted them to be pretty and vain and silly,” says Powell of the stepsisters. —JEFF NELSON & SCOTT HUVER

or baseball sensation Mo’ne Davis—who became the first female pitcher to win a game in last summer’s Little League World Series (she pitched a shutout!)—the past few months “seem like a pretty cool dream.” The South Philly eighth grader at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy became a celebrity overnight—appearing in a Chevy commercial, donating her jersey to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and being named Sports Illustrated Kids SportsKid of the Year. Baseball season has just begun, so Davis is back on the mound practicing seven days a week. “I can feel when I’m going to throw a strike,” Davis says. “Right before I release it, I feel it in my hand.” But the honor roll student still finds time to play video games (NBA 2K15 is a fave)and rock out to Fifth Harmony. And although her fastball has been clocked at a blistering 71 mph, her real love is basketball: “Hopefully I’ll play pro one day.” (If her killer move on Kevin Hart at last month’s NBA All-Star Celebrity Game is any indication, she has a shot!) For now, she’s just living out her personal motto: “Follow your dreams and don’t let anybody ever stop you.” —JOHNNY DODD

bedridden with headaches.” While oneshot radiation reduced the size of her brain tumors, Dr. Karo Arzoo, her hematologist/oncologist at UCLA, says “there is currently no cure” for her lung cancer, and she is ineligible for most clinical trials. For now, he says, the plan is for chemotherapy every three weeks. For how long? “Until it stops working or the side effects become intolerable.” Going public about their battle was not an easy decision for mother or daughter. Before she spoke with People, Christy had told only a handful of family members, friends and coworkers about her illness. Bailey, a college sophomore who works full-time at a pet store, is so painfully shy “she’s taking a speech class ONLINE,” Christy says, laughing. Bailey teases her mom for being as chatty as she is quiet. “She’ll talk to you forever!” Of the cancer, Bailey says, “I barely talk about it, let alone with people I don’t know.” The two have always been inseparable. Christy, who is twice divorced and raised Bailey mostly as a single mom, went to law school while working as a cop. She got permission to take Bailey, then 6, to class with her one semester because Bailey was having separation anxiety. “She came with her blankie, coloring books and a mini video player—with headphones—for her Disney movies,” recalls Christy, smiling at the memory. “She sat under the table, hanging on to my pant leg. She’s always come first.” Christy was thriving as a partner in a law firm when, one morning last June, she found she couldn’t understand words in the legal documents she was reading. After a series of tests, she got the diagnosis: stage 4 lung adenocarcinoma with a prognosis of less than six months—a grim timeline she has beaten. Not yet in need of in-home care, she has a close circle of relatives and friends who check in with her daily. She is determined to stay alive until Bailey’s 21st birthday on June 23: They have been planning a trip to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas along with other close family. “To have her there would mean everything to me,” Bailey says. Before then, Christy is focused on making progress in her right-to-die

Jessica bought you the Seed on the Go food truck in 2014. How did that come about? Jessica is a loving and generous person, but I was completely blown away when she offered to buy me the truck! She knows how much joy there is for me to make and share food. Are all your customers vegan? I find that most aren’t vegan or even vegetarian—they just like the food. Eating vegan doesn’t have to be an absolute choice, just one that you can explore and enjoy. What’s Jessica’s favorite dish? She loves the mac ’n’ cheese [see right]. Both of us enjoy eating healthy, plant-based meals, but sometimes you just want comfort food. This is a win-win! What makes it a healthier option? The sweet potato and quinoa pasta create a yummy, creamy texture that is low in fat and high in protein. And don’t get me started on the benefits of a dairy-free diet! I could go on and on.

ordia Harrington remembers the way her mother scrimped to buy her one pair of shoes every year— and how she got her clothes as hand-me-downs from a wealthy cousin. “I’m such a glass-full kind of girl, I wasn’t ashamed,” says Harrington, whose father worked as a salesman by day and cleaned floors at night to make ends meet after the family settled in St. Louis. “I knew I was loved. My parents saw hope and potential in us.” Harrington, 61, more than realized that potential, growing up to found the Bun Companies, a $100 million annual business in Nashville that bakes 7 million rolls, muffins, biscuits and buns a day for clients like McDonald’s, Pepperidge Farm and KFC. First taste of success: In the fifth grade Harrington started her own neighborhood daycare center, charging a quarter per kid per week. “I was always driven,” she says. After graduating college, she used all $587 of her savings to launch a real estate business and later parlayed that into a string of McDonald’s franchises. Days of doubt: After her first marriage broke up in 1988, Harrington was left in debt, raising three boys, ages 7 and under. “I was scared to death. Many mornings driving to work, tears would be streaming down my face as I watched the sun come up.” Words she lives by: “Just don’t give up,” says Harrington. “People will say, ‘You’re nuts,’ but if you have something in your heart, go for it.” —EILEEN FINAN

The Verdict “Tracy suffers from low blood sugar and has a nursing daughter with a dairy allergy, so she sticks to a gluten-free, low-carb, lactosefree diet,” says Dr. Richard Firshein of the Firshein Center for Comprehensive Medicine. “She could consume an additional 300 calories based on her size and activity level, however. Christie Brinkley’s

Ageless Skin Secrets How does Christie Brinkley look this incredible at 61? Sure, she works out and eats well (her favorite snack is an apple), but the supermodel also knows a few beauty tricks that pick up where her amazing genes leave off. How do you take care of your skin? I’ve been exfoliating for the past 40 years! At the beginning of my career, I read that men look about five years younger than women because they shave every day, which exfoliates the skin and gives it a

fresh appearance. I thought, “I don’t want men to have a five-year advantage on me. I’m going to exfoliate too.” And now you have your own product line. They say if you can’t find what you need, create it. I wanted the best antiaging ingredients and environmentally sensitive packaging. What’s the first thing you do in the morning? And your arms? I use my neck cream on them. It has special tighteners. Any good hair tips? I wear my own line of extensions, Hair2Wear. Is it annoying or flattering to hear people say, “You look good for your age”? I prefer “You look good,” but when they add “for your age,” I’m still flattered.

1 Bob, 4 Ways! FREIDA PINTO’S FRESH BOB, AND EVERY SINGLE WAY SHE STYLES IT, HAS US WANTING TO MAKE THE CUT TOO

Freida Pinto is addicted to her new do. The proof? After turning her shoulder-grazing lob (a long bob) into a chin-length bob last November, the actress told her hairstylist Shaylee Blatz a mere two months later, “I want to go shorter!” Blatz obliged and gave Pinto highlights. “Because Freida’s hair is straight, it was important I did a piecey cut and dimensional color to create the appearance of texture.”

STRAIGHT “We were in Miami, so the vibe called for a sleek look, almost as if she was fresh out of the water,” says hairstylist Bryce Scarlett.

SCULPTED “There is so much you can do with this haircut,” says L’Oréal Paris hairstylist Mara Roszak, who used a 1-in. GHD curling iron to give the star sophisticated, 1930s-inspired waves.

Matthew Perry The actor, 45, stars in the CBS remake of The Odd Couple, airing Thursdays Last time I took public transportation That was when I went to see the movie Fletch in 1985. I took the bus to the Sherman Oaks Galleria and back. But of course I was just on a plane like three days ago. I like to indulge my fellow passengers in conversation, and then I watch movies. Although sometimes you just need to sleep.

Last TV obsession Lost. I watched every episode and would sit there yelling at the TV. I really haven’t gotten hooked like that on another show since then.

Last home decorating purchase I saw a picture of a sports ticker tape in a house, and I said, “You can have one of these at home?!” So I bought one. I got mine first, but now [my Odd Couple character] Oscar has one too.

Last meal I made A grilled-cheese sandwich. I don’t make them often, but I make a good one. When I cut it in half, I make perfectly straight lines. It’s usually a last-minute kind of meal, but it’s really the only thing I can make.
