PROPERTY When my schedule allows, I love to end the day with a relaxing soak. There’s something so soothing about the quiet solitude of a hot bubbly bath. The stress melts away as my muscles loosen and my mind takes the opportunity to pause and reflect. It’s a truly restorative experience, hosted by my master bath. The only other space in my home that rivals this kind of tranquil escape is my bedroom, where my cozy bed receives me in its warm embrace every night. Often hidden behind closed doors, these off-limits spaces don’t always get the decorative attention they deserve, so this issue is an ode to bed and bath. The special Private Sanctuaries section (page 33) presents two knockout bathrooms and two stunning master suites. With styles running the gamut from graphic modern to polished traditional, we’re featuring a space to make every reader swoon. Speaking of which: Swathed in soothing sky blue, the bathroom featured in the High or Low column (page 22) promises to inspire pleasant reveries. Don’t forget to check Style News (page 15) for pretty and practical products to enhance your own retreat, and take peek at our Spotlight roundup of covetable vanity mirrors (page 98). We hope you enjoy the following pages as we intended – while reclining in bed or soaking in suds.

DESSERT OF THE MONTH

INGREDIENTS MAKES ONE 9" PIE

Crust 2½ cups all-purpose flour ¼ cup icing sugar ¾ cup cold butter, cubed ¼ cup shortening, cubed ¼ cup sour cream ¼ cup ice water 1 tsp pure vanilla extract Filling 5 Royal Gala apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced 3 tbsp all-purpose flour ½ tsp cinnamon ⅓ cup unsalted butter ⅔ cup brown sugar 2 tbsp water ½ tsp salt 2 tbsp 35% whipping cream 1 tbsp coarse sugar

DIRECTIONS To make the crust, stir together the flour and icing sugar in a large bowl. Cut in the butter and shortening with a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse meal. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, water and vanilla and drizzle over the flour mixture. Using both hands, bring the dough together to form a ball. If the dough seems too dry, add 1 or 2 more tablespoons of ice water. Shape into

2 discs, wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 45 minutes. Meanwhile, make the filling. Toss the apple slices in a large bowl with the flour and cinnamon until evenly coated; set aside. Melt the butter in a skillet set over medium heat; stir in the brown sugar, water and salt. Increase the heat to high and bring to a boil; cook until the mixture is bubbly, about 1 minute. Stir in the apples. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Roll out 1 pastry disc on a lightly floured work surface into a 12-inch circle. Fit the pastry into a 9-inch pie plate, trimming the edges to a 1-inch overhang. Pour the filling into the shell. Roll out the remaining pastry disc into a 10-inch circle and cut into ten 1-inch-wide strips. Place 5 strips across the pie, evenly spaced, then arrange the remaining strips across in the opposite direction to form a lattice pattern. Trim each strip to fit the diameter of the pie. Fold the overhanging pastry up over the edges of the lattice, pinching to join; crimp the edges of the pastry. Brush the pastry with the whipping cream and sprinkle with the coarse sugar. Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350°F and bake until the top is golden and the apples are soft, another 45 to 50 minutes. Cool completely before serving.

tip We used Royal Gala apples because they hold their shape well when baked and their flavour is deliciously sweet. If you prefer a tart taste, use the Granny Smith variety instead.

We’ve got 99 problems, and lack of storage is one. Homes aren’t always designed with functionality in mind, so a bathroom may boast ample floor space but be short a closet. Enter the free-standing cabinet, ready to hold all manner of towels and toiletries. We love this one for its eye-catching details, including arched glass door panels and intricate chunky silver-hued handles. Here’s how to make your display look like a million bucks.

2. BET ON BOWLS. Bits and bobs, such as samples and floss, are tucked neatly out of sight when corralled in elegant on-theme brasstoned metal vessels. 3. STACK STRATEGICALLY. Present towels in their most flattering light by turning decorative details like fringes and tassels outward. 4. WELCOME WHIMSY. Notions of the ocean rush in through faux coral and shells. Use a select few unique ones, as opposed to a sea of humdrum pieces.

When seeking unique hand towels, you needn’t get hung up in terry town – there are so many other well-suited weaves available. Nor should you restrict yourself to the bath section. In fact, you may not need to buy anything new at all! For an unexpected take, shop your pantry or china cabinet instead.

Trend alert: We’re seeing triangles everywhere!

Over time, a steamy situation can turn into a sticky one if you don’t prime your bathroom walls for the inevitable daily mists and sprays. Select a quality paint that’s designed to stand up to moisture, such as Beauti-Tone’s mildew-resistant acrylic Kitchen & Bath finish. (Bonus: It’s scrubbable.)

At just the right size, a tea towel or cloth napkin makes an excellent stand-in. Seek out a laid-back element, like a wale texture or frayed edges, for a casual feel or a graphic pattern, from pinstripes to swirls, for an elegant touch.

YOU’RE LOOKING QUITE LAVISH! The trend toward maximalism is resplendent with luscious lavender, gorgeous geometrics, big, beautiful lorals, and color-crazy kitchens.

• Botanicals are breaking big, covering walls, furniture, and more. • Geometrics are both retro and reinvigorating, Make way for the luxury and elegance of violets and lavenders with circles — Pantone named “Ultra Violet” as the color of the year. Try it coming on in a single chair — or paint the town. especially strong.

Maximalism: more is more!

Do-it-for-me! Why do it yourself when having the experts do it for you has become so affordable? Some projects are great fun to DIY, but when it comes to precise measurements and installation, put a pro on the job. What a relief.

• Go for broke with color, collections, layers of window coverings, texture, embellishment, comfort and wildly eclectic style. A staunch minimalist? Try just one wall, fill it from floor to ceiling with art and objects. • New kitchens move from white-on-white to color, with blue and green cabinetry taking center stage.

Stay flexible One big trend is perfectly practical: overall interior flexibility. Stretch the space you have with furniture or design elements that serve two purposes, like a coffee table that pops up into a dining table, or a murphy bed that turns an office into a guest room.

With a bathroom like this, who

needs to go to a spa? “We wanted the space to feel serene and soothing, like a calm getaway,” says designer Shirley Meisels, who achieved a tranquil vibe with a white and grey palette, as well as masterfully layered details. For a pampering experience, all these homeowners need to do is dim the lights, spark some candles and slip into the luxurious tub.

1. Tile Talk To give it dimension and attitude, the custom vanity was fitted with strips of wood before being sprayed a soft grey. Deep drawers provide plenty of room for stowing bathing necessities, while the floating design keeps all eyes on the star of the show: the Moorish marble-tiled floors.

After a stay

at Manhattan’s swish Gramercy Park Hotel, homeowners Lisa and Keith Miller returned to their abode with the suite life fresh in their minds. They envisioned a crisp, clean high-contrast space, and designer Reena Sotropa, along with her senior designer, Alanna Dunn, was happy to oblige. Some space planning (think 11 floor plan revisions) and a bold black and white aesthetic netted the couple a cool Calgary bathroom that’s in sync with a glam New York state of mind.

4

1. Brass Section The mash-up of black and white with warm metals creates a dynamic composition. “We wanted to warm up the space with brass accents,” says Alanna. “Lisa spotted these faucets in a local showroom and fell in love with them. We carried their finish through to all the fixtures. I love the juxtaposition of a mellow patina in such a bright white space.” The front of the vanity was painted black as a sharp foil to all the brass, as well as the marble countertop; a dozen drawers maximize storage space.

2. Hex Appeal “We chose matte black hexagonal floor tiles to help hide water marks and dust,” says Reena, who loves to mix patterns in her designs. All the tile treatments, including the marble basket-weave shower floor tiles and subway wall tiles, are tied together with charcoal-coloured grout.

3. Manhattan Transfer The black and white palette is dramatically at play in the industrial-look shower, which

boasts an ingenious decor idea: applied metal mullions on the outside and paintedon ones on the inside. “This eliminates individual panes of glass on the interior so cleaning is easy,” says Reena. A free-standing tub replaced the existing overpowering corner whirpool bath.

4. Niche Market “Adding marble to the shower niche breaks up the expanse of the subway tiles and introduces a natural material for a

bit of warmth,” says Alanna. “We also wanted to create a beautiful backdrop for the plumbing fixtures, which were a splurge.”

5. Best in Show While the two vanity mirrors are undeniable showstoppers, they don’t overwhelm the space. “I love that they are essentially frameless, so they don’t compete with the warm metal finishes on the plumbing fixtures and sconces,” says Alanna.

When your home

is part and parcel of your job, you need a retreat within your retreat. For designer and TV personality Jillian Harris, the master suite in her Kelowna, B.C., house is a serene escape where her family can quietly start their day. “We spend a lot of mornings in here – all four (soon to be five) of us!” she says, referring to partner Justin Pasutto, two-year-old son Leo, boxer pooch Nacho Cilantro and a new baby daughter due in October. “We read books together. We brush our teeth, catch the sunrise, check on our trees.” Those are the pear,

OPPOSITE & RIGHT Cool dove grey walls in the master bathroom – a soft shift from Jillian’s preferred white palette – bring a spa-like serenity to the bright airy space. One of the keys to the uncluttered interiors Jillian creates is including ample built-in storage. “It helps keep things organized,” she says. The Caesarstone vanity countertop stands up well to hot hair irons, makeup and more.

OPPOSITE Jillian ordered two other bathtubs before finding this soaker, which fits her space perfectly. With the tub filler on the side, bathers can face either way – or two can wash at the same time! To give the space old-world charm, the wall beside the tub was handsomely panelled, and a plate rail was added to hold artwork at eye level. LEFT Including a steam shower in the master bath was a luxurious move that makes life better on a daily basis. “I’m not a gadget person, but I love using the steam shower – it feels like I’m going to a spa every morning,” says Jillian. (She adds: “I don’t use it while I’m pregnant, though.”) A niche in the shower wall keeps shampoo and conditioner close at hand – no bending necessary.

Redoing the garden was the last stage of an approximately 10-month renovation that saw Jillian and Justin strip a 3,500-square-foot 1970s split-level back to the studs to make it work for their growing brood. Key to the modernization was the master suite overhaul. One end of the house was extended by eight feet, allowing the couple to expand the

ensuite bathroom and add a kitted-out walk-in closet. “The bedroom actually got a bit smaller, but I’ve never felt a need for a big master,” says Jillian. “As long as I have space for a kingsized bed, nightstands and a dresser, I’m good.” Fitting one wall with French doors gave the ensuite a new lease on life. “Justin and I love having a lot of light in our bedroom, STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2018

especially in the morning, to kick-start the day,” she explains. She amped up the light by using her signature white-on-white palette for the walls, furniture and accessories. Rustic ceiling beams and hardwood flooring take the look in a French country direction, while blush bedding lends a hint of romance. “I wanted it to be a bit shabby chic, but still clean.” The charming style is carried into the ensuite and closet, which are both roomy and hard-working. “When we’re getting ready in the morning, we don’t want to be bumping into each other,” says Jillian. Both rooms are also packed with storage. It’s one of the secrets to the designer’s clean-lined aesthetic. “Our house gets messy – like everybody else’s – so I like having a place for everything. It makes it easy to maintain.” This is the type of practical mandate that lets the busy designer spend peaceful mornings with her family, enjoying the sunrise and the fruit trees...and not worrying about tidying up. Is there any better way to start the day? LEFT, TOP The nightstands have secret drawers in their top tiers to stash jewellery and plug in phones, keeping the surfaces uncluttered. LEFT The tufted bench at the foot of the bed, layered with a textured throw and subtly patterned toss cushions, delivers the romantic vibe Jillian sought.

“The custom-designed headboard was a big splurge,” admits Jillian, who got partner Justin Pasutto on board by telling him pink is an aphrodisiac. She says investing in betterquality pieces seems logical to her as she gets more settled in her aesthetic. “I buy things for the long term now.”

SOPHISTICATED MODERN

+ Luxe materials + Warm metals + Geometric accents

Most parents

are bound to be familiar with the tiny long-sleeved bodysuits known as onesies – the items of clothing we dress little ones in to keep them cozy and warm. That’s the feeling the homeowners of this midtown Toronto abode wanted designer Ali Budd to create in their master suite – but with a twist. The couple, both doctors and parents to three young children, felt their personal quarters should be comfy yet luxe and elegant, just like, in their own words, “a cashmere onesie.” To get the desired look, Ali introduced a clean-lined black and white palette and a mix of lavish materials in the ensuite. Case in point – The Nero Marquina black marble tiles arranged in a OPPOSITE & RIGHT Brass fixtures provide a punch of old-school glam against the black and white stone elements – a mix of porcelain and marble – in this dramatic and elegant room.

“The owners lead busy lives, so having a space where they can completely unwind at the end of a long day is really important.”

OPPOSITE The wall behind the bed is clad in fabric panelling with brass studs that create the look of a headboard without taking up extra square footage. Designer Ali Budd also saved surface space on the top of the nightstands by using wall sconces instead of table lamps. The nightstands’ drawers, as well as the wall treatment and patterned rug, add geometric interest. LEFT The designer chose a floating dresser with a white frame and dark wooden drawers to keep the large item from feeling too bulky. The same goes for the light fixture, which is expansive but looks sleek. Ali placed a contemporary chair in the corner, as she believes every bedroom should include a comfortable seat. herringbone pattern make for a chic and dramatic focal wall in the shower. For the vanity and backsplash, Ali used large slabs of porcelain with grey veining. “A lot of people think that white is boring,” says the designer, “but this custom vanity is a perfect example of just how interesting it can be.” Ali wanted to make sure the look would flow effortlessly from room to room, so in the

master bedroom she used geometric patterns on the rug and nightstand drawers to echo the shower wall treatment. She chose to keep the vibe more calm here with subtle wallpaper and a feature wall of upholstered panelling. To anchor the space, the designer opted for dark-hued furniture with rustic wood grains, a sleek black light fixture and a mod butterfly chair.

Both the master and ensuite include personalized touches. “I like providing my clients with custom-made items, like the bedroom’s two-toned drapery, for example,” says Ali. “It’s those details that make the look so refined.” The plush cozy bedding was the final touch for this couple, who now have the classy, soothing and stylish master suite of their cashmere onesie dreams.

hanks to its cheery and calming vibes, this Calgary living room will have you California dreaming – and that’s exactly the effect designer Aly Velji was going for when he revamped it for a mother and her two children. Originally decorated with pieces from their previous house, the 350-square-foot room seemed lacklustre and no longer suited the family’s style, so out went the furniture. With the flooring in tiptop shape and a great layout, the space became a stunning blank canvas.

The homeowner prefers a soothing neutral colour scheme, so instead of using pops of bold colours, Aly introduced interest through multiple textures and sculptural details. “Wood, metal, marble, wool, leather and linen all make appearances here,” he says. “Texture is definitely key.”

The existing fireplace and its marble surround were sleek features the homeowner didn’t want to lose, so Aly worked them into the design. The veined stone casts a classic mood, while its subtle luxury blends perfectly with the overall aesthetic.

2. Vivid Views The large painting hanging above the sofa is the focal point of the room, pulling together its palette and providing a stunning graphic statement. The piece is made of stretched linen, which adds more depth and texture to the space.

3. Throwing Curveballs Rustic yet elegant, the cofee table is made of aged elm and boasts a curvaceous form, acting as an anchor and keeping the scheme from appearing too linear.

4. Dazzling Details Intricate stitching, a trademark of Moroccan poufes, and cognac-coloured leather lend the space warmth and bohemian flair.

5. Golden Touches The roomy armchairs have a soft laid-back appeal that’s in contrast to the dainty yet dramatic metal side tables, but both items have one thing in common: hits of glamorous gold.

6 Tasked with creating a setting that put family-friendly feels first, Aly focused on balancing a relaxed practical look with one that’s polished. “It’s all about finding that sweet spot between casual and elegant, which can be difficult to pinpoint. But we made it work, and the room turned out really beautifully,” says the designer, who believes that having kids in the house doesn’t mean forgoing a sophisticated design. Here’s how Aly transformed this living room from a mundane space into one family’s happy place.

GREAT THINGS are born of great friendships – and the perfect design is a perfect example. That’s why designer Orsi Panos always interviews prospective clients before taking on a new project. “If we’re going to be in each other’s lives for more than a year, we have to like each other,” she says. “Designing a house for someone is really special and intimate, so my clients and I often become great friends by the end.” That’s what happened with homeowners Janet Taylor – an artist – and her wife, who hired Orsi to design the main floor of their Toronto home after seeing how she transformed their neighbours’ house. next door, they wanted to open up the space and imbue it with a contemporary casual vibe. Though their design vision was drastically different from the example the couple saw, they knew Orsi was their match after one quick meeting. “We walked away saying, ‘This is someone we know we can work with,’” explains Janet. She was right. “My main directive was to fill the house with light,” says Orsi, “which is perfect, because that’s my driving force in design, too. Natural light makes everything come alive.” After knocking down walls to open up the main floor and allow light to flow through, Orsi set about switching up the layout to better reflect the homeowners’ lifestyle. Since they spend most of their time in the kitchen, Orsi kept it in the centre of the home and expanded the living room to the back, where the homeowners could lounge, entertain and best enjoy their beloved

Gone are the days of boring bathrooms. Today, everyone craves a pleasing space in which to unwind and practise self care. To present the latest bath trends, we consulted established Canadian stone and tile retailer Ciot.

Terrazzo Is Back A stylish, solid and beautiful material, terrazzo is back and better than ever. To highlight its funky spotted pattern, pair it with streamlined white fixtures and minimal accessories.

Pattern Play ALL ABOUT GEOMETRY Hexagonal, octagonal, trapeze and textured tiles – geometric shapes are all the rage!

Fun patterned tiles, such as those from Ciot’s Metro line, lend themselves to playful combinations – swirls complement chevrons, which in turn jibe with blocks. “Affordable simple tiles take on a graphic look when paired in unexpected ways,” says Marie-Claude. “To add depth, mix up matte and glossy finishes.” Ciot, ciot.com.

Grey Is the New White

Nature Calls

Modern and soothing, grey stands out: “The colour is versatile, chic and industrial. Plus, grey finishes are easier to clean than white ones,” says Marie-Claude Fréchette, marketing director at Ciot. Light grey tiles and charcoal-toned bathroom fixtures are cool and contemporary, especially when combined with trendy black and brass metal finishes.

On the hot list are tiles that imitate raw and organic textures and materials, such as wood, concrete and stone. “Stoneware tiles perfectly reproduce and imitate the essence of wood, the imperfections of natural stone and the texture of concrete,” says Marie-Claude.

home that could accommodate a lightfilled photography studio was top of mind when Monic Richard began searching for real estate in the Mile-Ex area of Montreal. Monic, who has photographed countless decor and architectural projects, wanted a functionally beautiful space for both her business and her family, which includes her partner, Gilles DuSablon, and their kids, Charlotte, 21, and William, 17. “I wanted to have 14-foot-high ceilings, like my previous studio had, because I intended to work from home,” says the Quebecborn photographer, who is among the city’s most lauded. And now she has all that and more in this urban hipster patch of Montreal, wedged between Little Italy and Avenue du Parc, where restaurants pop up in parking lots, bearded men cut hair for bearded patrons, industrial buildings abound and street art is fanciful and daring.

But first Monic had to make a huge sacrifice to get the space she desired. In 2011, she bought a single-storey shoebox-sized house, one of the iconic Mont real homes built more than a century ago. After many consultations with engineers, it became clear that the only way to achieve the size and spaciousness she wanted was to build a new two-storey house on the footprint of the old. TAILORED ELEGANCE

TEXT CHRISTY WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY TRACEY AYTON

A mix of classic and clean-lined, neutral and natural takes builder basic from plain to pleasing.

ost people would jump at the chance to have a designer transform their place, and Wendy Newson did just that – although it was into a hot tub, fully clothed. “I was at my sister’s Canada Day party in 2016, and all the kids wanted to get in the hot tub but didn’t have swimsuits,” says Wendy. “I told them to jump in with their clothes on, and my niece, designer Karla Amadatsu, said if I did the same she’d give me a free design consultation for my new house. I jumped in with my jeans and top on right then and there!”

A marble-topped Tulipstyle table feels cool and modern in the dining room of this West Coast home, especially when paired with wooden Wishbone-style chairs. Custom linen drapes are finished with carameltoned bands for drama and interest, and the chandelier boasts a show-stopping mix of bronze and brass. THIS PAGE & OPPOSITE, BOTTOM Designer Karla Amadatsu transformed the all-white kitchen with just two elements. “I switched out the builder-basic light fixtures above the island with these gorgeous black pendants and added wooden stools that have an organic Mid-Century Modern appeal,” she says. ABOVE “The entryway bench’s natural fibres and black, white and camel palette introduce the colours and textures found throughout the main floor,” says Karla. It was a splashy beginning to a makeover that flowed from a one-hour consultation into a threemonth transformation and saw a 3,000-square-foot new build in Surrey, B.C., go from basic to characterful. “My Aunt Wendy and Uncle Dave have two grown sons [one in high school; one in university], so I wanted this home to be a more grown-up space than their previous house,” says Karla. The layout didn’t need revising, there was lots of natural light and Karla rated the kitchen cabinetry as having quality millwork. Still, there were lacklustre builder-issued light fixtures and, overall, the all-white space lacked personality. “I wanted to elevate the home, style-wise, so it didn’t feel like it was brand new,” says the STYLEATHOME.COM SEPTEMBER 2018

A master class in elegant furniture arrangement, the living room also holds its own when it comes to wear and tear. “The sofa has a classic silhouette with a nod to mid-century style. I love that it can work in any space,” says Karla. “The fabric looks like a nice textured Belgian linen but it’s actually synthetic, which means it’s super-durable.” Custom SOFA, ARMCHAIRS, FLOOR LAMPS, PRINTS, TOSS CUSHIONS, Kerrisdale Design; RUG, Ballard Designs.

designer. “My vision was to layer in warm neutral tones, add some Mid-Century Modern pieces – because my aunt and uncle love them – and upgrade the lighting.” Karla also notes that this 2017 build, like many, was short on architectural details, so she relied on the artful placement of furnishings to create visual interest. In the living room, she placed large-scale black and white artwork and elegant floor lamps on either side of the fireplace for instant dramatic symmetry, and in the home office a gallery wall of family photos feels like it’s been curated over the years. In every room, a dynamic mix of furniture styles feels collected rather than purchased en masse, while tactile elements – such as the solid and patterned drapery and the graphic rugs throughout – factor in softness and luxury. “With new and neutral spaces, adding a range of styles, textures and layers is key to curating both comfort and impact,” says Karla. Wendy agrees. “Karla has made our home light, airy and uncluttered with beautiful points of interest that catch your eye,” she says. “Whenever I come home at the end of a hectic or stressful day, I feel peaceful and happy in the space. The tension melts away.” It’s a similar effect to the one produced by the hot tub that started it all, but much, much better.

OPPOSITE Karla transformed a large white wall in the office into a focal point populated by family photos. “I used an assortment of white frames to create a gallery wall with the black and white photographs,” she says. “In order to determine the layout, I played around with positions for the frames on the floor until I was pleased with the overall efect.” DESK, ARMCHAIR, RH; DRAPERY, TABLE LAMP, RUG, Kerrisdale Design; FRAMES, IKEA.

or many retired or semi-retired people, life feels even busier than when their careers were in full swing. That is certainly true for these snowbirds, who spend winters in Palm Springs and summers at their cottage in Lake of the Woods, Ont. With such a full travel schedule, they were spending little time at their highmaintenance 6,000-square-foot main residence, which backed onto a golf course in Steinbach, Man. So when a potential buyer approached with an attractive offer, the pair jumped at the opportunity to downsize. They sold their home almost fully furnished and bought a modest-sized lot that overlooks protected land. “We were starting from scratch, which was both exciting and terrifying,” says one of the homeowners.

They temporarily settled into a condo with some of their personal belongings, and hired local architect John Duerksen to design a retirement abode that was just the right size. To finesse the interior, designer Jaclyn Peters was brought on board. After living in their previous house, which had dark wood floors, kitchen cabinetry, granite and paint colours, they craved something with a completely opposite feel. With the slate wiped clean, homeowners, architect and designer created a vision for the new place. “We asked for bright, modern and functional,” says one of the homeowners. Their new 1,700-square-foot contemporary home is awash with light from expansive windows and a high timbered ceiling. White oak flooring reinforces the warm yet airy aesthetic and is echoed in the ceiling, which is clad with custom-stained fir planks. The furnishings were kept simple, with plenty of natural materials to add texture to the modern space.

“We focused on warmer tones and neutral shades,” says Jaclyn. “Everything is muted and very cozy.” The kitchen is small and simple, stylish and functional. Having a master bedroom and office on the main floor, and two spare bedrooms on the lower level, means the home works for day-to-day living à deux and seamlessly allows for plenty of guests during family get-togethers. At less than one-third of the size of their former house, this place meets the couple’s needs perfectly, and they couldn’t be happier. Says one of the homeowners: “It was a fun project, and we are thrilled with the end result. The size is just right for us now.”

HEIRLOOM TOMATO PHYLLO TART

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish Toasted baguette slices, for serving

SERVES 8

½ ½ 1 2 1 1 10 ¼ ½

cup fresh ricotta cheese cup mascarpone cheese large egg yolk tbsp freshly grated lemon zest tsp fresh thyme leaves tsp flaky sea salt sheets phyllo pastry, thawed if frozen cup extra-virgin olive oil or melted butter lb assorted heirloom tomatoes, cut into ½"-thick slices 2 to 3 tbsp balsamic crema ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, for garnish Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside. Add the ricotta, mascarpone, egg yolk, lemon zest, thyme and sea salt flakes to a medium bowl, stirring until well combined; set aside. Using a pastry brush, coat each sheet of phyllo pastry with olive oil, stacking one on top of another on the prepared baking sheet until you have 10 layers. Spread the ricotta filling onto the top layer, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Top with a layer of sliced tomatoes. Fold up the edges of the phyllo all the way around. Brush the top of the edges with a bit more oil. Bake until the pastry is golden brown and the tomatoes are cooked, 35 to 40 minutes. Transfer the tart to a wire rack to let cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Drizzle with the balsamic crema and top with the basil. Cut into squares and serve immediately.

BROILED FETA WITH CHILI SALT, TOMATOES & BASIL SERVES 4

8 oz feta cheese, cubed ½ tsp extra-virgin olive oil ½ tsp chili salt* ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 to 2 sprigs thyme, leaves only ½ tsp canola or vegetable oil ½ cup grape or cherry tomatoes, halved Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

*Combine ½ tbsp chili flakes, ½ tsp smoked paprika and ⅓ cup of flaky sea salt to make this flavourful blend. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place the feta in a medium baking dish. Drizzle with the olive oil, then season with the chili salt, pepper and thyme. Toss gently to coat. Bake on the top rack of the oven for 10 minutes. Switch to broil for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, until the feta is golden brown and a little bubbly (keep a very close eye on it and adjust time as needed). Meanwhile, heat the canola oil in a small frying pan over medium heat. Add the tomatoes, along with salt and pepper, and sauté just until softened, 1 to 2 minutes. Arrange the feta on a serving dish and top with the cooked tomatoes and garnish with the basil. Serve immediately with the toasted baguette slices.

so they don’t burn completely – this definitely isn’t the time to leave the room for a phone call!) Meanwhile, heat the canola oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is translucent, 4 to 5 minutes. Season with the salt. Transfer the roasted tomatoes to the pot; stir in the broth. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Add the Parmesan, stirring until the cheese has melted. To give the soup a super smooth consistency, transfer the mixture to a blender and pulse until completely smooth. For a chunkier version, use an immersion blender to blend the soup until it reaches your desired texture. Divide the soup among eight serving bowls. Top with a dollop of the crème fraîche and garnish with the fresh basil and sorrel; serve immediately.

BLISTERED TOMATO SOUP SERVES 8

10 to 12 small round tomatoes, such as Campari 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp dried rosemary 1 tbsp canola or vegetable oil 1½ cups chopped onion 2 garlic cloves, chopped ½ tsp salt 2½ cups vegetable broth ⅓ cup finely grated Parmesan Crème fraîche or plain Greek yogurt, for serving Fresh basil and sorrel leaves, for garnish Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with foil. Cut an X in the bottom of each tomato and place on the prepared baking sheet, cut side up. Drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle with the thyme and rosemary. Toss the tomatoes until well coated. Roast for 30 minutes, then broil the tomatoes until slightly charred on top, 15 to 20 minutes. (Keep a close eye on the tomatoes
