eople are like taxis. We each have a version of a light on our roof signaling that we’re ready to let people in or that they shouldn’t even bother trying. We flip it on YAY DAY! or keep it dark in different ways—body My book, Your Fully language, eye contact (or lack of it), facial Charged Life, expressions, what we say and how we say it, will be out in paperand the general vibe we project. In a way, back on February 22 wherever books the light—an air of approachability and are sold! openness—is an expression of optimism. It says, “I believe there are good things and good people out there, so go ahead and flag me down.” That’s the vibe I want to give off: I want to let people in, make a connection, and take the ride with them because I’m hopeful that it will bring me somewhere awesome. As I discuss in my book, the first and easiest step in making more connections, and more meaningful ones, is sending the signal that you’re open to them. What would you think of yourself if you saw yourself in the wild or had to talk to yourself, as a stranger, on the phone? Be honest about the energy you give off and consciously try to be more aware of it and more open. You don’t have to make a big show of it—it’s as simple as head up, eyes open, noticing vs. filtering, listening vs. just hearing. It’s a softness, presence with and consideration of others. It’s being aware of the people you share space with and making room for a small shared moment—for kindness, empathy, curiosity, patience, or compassion. If you’re not used to moving through the world this way, it can feel uncomfortable at first. That means you’re doing it right. Also, not everyone will want a ride, and you won’t always feel like giving one. That’s OK. But when you’re drained or on edge and your instinct is to shut down, allow for the possibility that connection may be exactly what you need. By giving yourself the chance to be flagged down, you might just find yourself going on an exhilarating trip. I’ll join you!

Call a healthcare provider right away if you or your family member has any of the following symptoms, especially if they are new, worse, or worry you: • thoughts about suicide or dying; new or worsening depression; feeling very agitated or restless; panic attacks; new or worsening irritability; an extreme increase in activity or talking (mania); attempts to commit suicide; new or worsening anxiety; acting on dangerous impulses; trouble sleeping (insomnia); acting aggressive, being angry, or violent; other unusual changes in behavior or mood What else do I need to know about antidepressant medicines? • Never stop an antidepressant medicine without first talking to your healthcare provider. Stopping an antidepressant medicine suddenly can cause other symptoms. • Antidepressants are medicines used to treat depression and other illnesses. It is important to discuss all the risks of treating depression and also the risks of not treating it. Patients and their families or other caregivers should discuss all treatment choices with the healthcare provider, not just the use of antidepressants. • Antidepressant medicines have other side effects. Talk to the healthcare provider about the possible side effects of the medicine prescribed for you or your family member. • Antidepressant medicines can interact with other medicines. Know all of the medicines that you or your family member takes. Keep a list of all medicines (including prescription medicines, non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements) to show the healthcare provider. Do not start new medicines without first checking with your healthcare provider. What is REXULTI? REXULTI is a prescription medicine used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). REXULTI is used with antidepressant medicines, when your healthcare provider determines that an antidepressant alone is not enough to treat your depression. It is not known if REXULTI is safe and effective in people under 18 years of age. Who should not take REXULTI? Do not take REXULTI if you are allergic to brexpiprazole or any of the ingredients in REXULTI. See the end of this fact sheet for a complete list of ingredients in REXULTI. What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking REXULTI? Before taking REXULTI, tell your healthcare provider if you: • have diabetes or high blood sugar or a family history of diabetes or high blood sugar. Your healthcare provider should check your blood sugar before you start REXULTI and during your treatment. • have high levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, or low levels of HDL cholesterol • have or had seizures (convulsions) • have or had low or high blood pressure • have or had heart problems or a stroke • have or had a low white blood cell count • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if REXULTI may harm your unborn baby. Using REXULTI in the last trimester of pregnancy may cause muscle movement problems, medicine withdrawal symptoms, or both of these in your newborn. | If you become pregnant while taking REXULTI, talk to your healthcare provider about registering with the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics. You can register by calling 1-866-961-2388 or visit http://womensmentalhealth. org/clinical-and-research-programs/pregnancyregistry/ • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if REXULTI passes into your breast milk. You and your healthcare provider should decide if you will take REXULTI or breastfeed.
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take or recently have taken, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. REXULTI and other medicines may affect each other causing possible serious side effects. REXULTI may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how REXULTI works. Your healthcare provider can tell you if it is safe to take REXULTI with your other medicines. Do not start or stop any medicines while taking REXULTI without talking to your healthcare provider first. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines to show your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. What should I avoid while taking REXULTI? • Do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities until you know how REXULTI affects you. REXULTI may make you feel drowsy. • Avoid getting over-heated or dehydrated while taking REXULTI. | Do not over-exercise. | Stay out of the sun. Do not wear too much or heavy clothing. | In hot weather, stay inside in a cool place if possible. | Drink plenty of water. What are the possible side effects of REXULTI? If you or your family members notice that you are having unusual urges or behaviors, talk to your healthcare provider. • Low white blood cell count • Decreased blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). You may feel lightheaded or faint when you rise too quickly from a sitting or lying position. • Seizures (convulsions) • Problems controlling your body temperature so that you feel too warm. 1 whole striped bass or sea bass (about 1½ lbs, cleaned) 1 3-in. piece fresh ginger (about 1 in. thick), peeled and cut into thin matchsticks, divided 2 scallions, cut into thin matchsticks, green and white parts separated 8 sprigs fresh cilantro, roughly chopped ¼ cup soy sauce ¾ tsp sugar Freshly ground white pepper Kosher salt ¼ cup plus 2 Tbsp vegetable oil, divided
1 Steam fish: You’ll need a heatproof plate large enough to hold fish and a wok or other pot fitted with a rack (or use a metal can with both ends removed) on
which to set the plate. Fill wok or pot with 2 to 3 in. water, cover, and bring to a boil. Rinse fish, place on plate, and steam, covered, until just opaque throughout, 9 min. Turn off heat. 2 Carefully pour off liquid accumulated on plate from steaming. Spread half of ginger and then green portions of scallions and cilantro over top of fish. 3 In bowl, mix together soy sauce, sugar, white pepper to taste, ¼ cup water, and ¼ tsp salt. Heat 2 Tbsp oil and remaining ginger in small saucepan on medium-high until just sizzling, then stir in sauce mixture and bring to a simmer. 4 Once simmering, add remaining ¼ cup oil and white portions of scallions and stir until liquid returns to a simmer. Spoon mixture evenly over fish; serve hot.

1 Cook noodles in boiling water 3 to 4 min., just until al dente. Drain immediately; set aside. 2 In small bowl, dissolve sugar and ¼ tsp salt in 1 Tbsp hot water, then stir in oyster sauce, soy sauces, sesame oil, and white pepper to taste. 3 Heat large wok until just smoking and spread 2 Tbsp oil around edge of pan. 4 Add mushrooms and light green parts of chives and stir-fry 30 sec., adding another Tbsp oil if mushrooms look dry.

5 Add drained noodles and stir-fry until warmed through, 20 sec. to 1 min. 6 Drizzle prepared sauce mixture evenly over noodles and stir-fry, tossing, until noodles are well coated, 1 to 2 min. If necessary, spread another Tbsp oil around perimeter of wok to prevent sticking or add 1 to 2 Tbsp water, making sure to mix gently so noodles don’t break. 7 Add dark green parts of chives and mix until they turn bright green and noodles are heated through, another 1 to 3 min.

2 oz dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked overnight or in hot water at least 2 hr. until rehydrated (save soaking water for another use), about 8 medium 3 Tbsp vegetable oil 2 tsp finely chopped peeled fresh ginger (from about a ¾-in. piece) ½ cup finely chopped carrot (about 1 medium carrot) 1 cup finely chopped bamboo shoots (about 4 oz) 2 tsp Shaoxing wine or dry cooking sherry 4 tsp soy sauce 2 tsp vegetarian oyster sauce or regular oyster sauce 2 Tbsp finely chopped scallion greens (from 2 scallions) 16 cilantro stems, each about 5 in. long 16 Hong Kong–style yellow dumpling wrappers

“I grew up watching my grandma put so much care into wrapping dumplings for our celebration, and I love keeping this tradition alive with my family.” 1 Squeeze excess water from mushrooms and trim away any tough stems. Finely chop and set aside. 2 Heat wok on mediumlow. Add oil, then ginger and carrot, and cook 1 min. Add mushrooms and bamboo shoots, increase heat to medium, and stir-fry 2 to 3 min., until vegetables are softened. 3 Add Shaoxing wine, soy sauce, and vegetarian oyster sauce. Stir to combine and cook until mushrooms are tender and liquid is absorbed, 4 to 5 min. Stir in scallions, then transfer to plate to cool completely. 4 Meanwhile, make ties for money bags: Bring medium pot of water to a boil and fill medium bowl with ice water.
Add cilantro stems and blanch 5 to 10 sec., then drain and add to ice water to stop cooking process. Drain and gently squeeze dry, being careful to keep stems intact. 5 Open pkg. of dumpling wrappers and cover with damp towel to make sure they don’t dry out. With rolling pin, roll each to about 4-in. diameter. Add generous Tbsp filling to middle, being sure there’s enough slack to close dumplings. 6 Gently close wrapper over filling, pinching bundle together but leaving top of bag fanned out. Use one of the cilantro “strings” to tie it closed. Repeat until all filling is used. 7 Line bamboo steamer with parchment, cabbage
leaves, or cheesecloth to prevent dumplings from sticking. Arrange dumplings in steamer, about 1 in. apart. 8 Set steamer in clean wok filled with enough boiling water to come ½ in. up sides of steamer. Cover and steam 3 min. TIP The filling can be made in advance, but the dumplings should be steamed right after assembly, as the wrappers are extremely delicate and may rip open if the assembled dumplings are allowed to sit too long.

“I was always so active” Megan Corbin, 31, CRESCENT CIT Y, CA
I
n July 2020, a day after teaching an online fitness class with her usual energy, dancer Megan Corbin woke up with pain in her chest. Gas, she thought, and she asked her husband for some ginger ale. But when both arms went numb and she was too weak to walk, she agreed to go to the hospital. Within 10 minutes of her arrival, an EKG revealed that she was having a heart attack. Afterward, Megan learned that she suddenly had high cholesterol and high blood pressure, two major heart disease risk factors. Doctors put in a stent to help keep her arteries open so blood could flow. CHANGE OF HEART: Two months
after her heart attack, Megan made one of her dreams a reality: She opened a dance studio in her small town. Alter Ego Dance now has 80 students who learn everything from tap to Bollywood dance. And the girl boss now forces herself to take more breaks—and a nap when she needs it.
Do one thing: Break a sweat. Regular exercise is an important part of keeping your heart strong and heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure or an unhealthy weight at bay. Try to make it fun! If, like Megan, you love dancing, crank up an energetic playlist, do online dance workouts, or take classes at a local dance studio. “I thought it was just heartburn” Angel Gibbs, 53, WORCESTER, MA

or months, Angel explained away the symptoms that were bothering her. Chest pain? Too much spicy food. An ache in her jaw? Probably a cavity. Back pain gripping her shoulders? Time to get a new work bag. When her left bicep hurt as if a rubber band were squeezing it, she started to blame her workout…except she hadn’t worked out. Finally ready to admit that something wasn’t quite right, Angel drove herself to the emergency room. The doctor suggested that it might be indigestion or a panic attack—until her blood pressure spiked drastically and an echocardiogram revealed an 80% blockage in two arteries. Angel was having a heart attack. Doctors immediately put in two stents, and she spent six days recovering in the hospital.
CHANGE OF HEART: Cardiac rehab taught Angel a
new way to eat. Out: added salt and sugar, processed foods, most dairy, and anything on four legs. In: feathers and fins (i.e., poultry and fish), salt-free seasoning, “ice cream” made from frozen fruit, and lots of plant-based eats. In just six months, Angel lost 50 pounds. “I feel better than ever,” she says.
Do one thing: Make better-for-you swaps. When
Angel craves tacos, she uses ground turkey and nosalt taco seasoning—turkey is lower in fat than beef, and spices bring big flavor. Other smart switches: Enjoy Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, homemade oatmeal with fruit rather than the sugary microwave kind, and meat-free bean and veggie chili.

“I knew what labor pains felt like, but this was scarily different” Nefertari Nelson-Williams, 48, WILLINGBORO, NJ
T
hirty-seven weeks pregnant with her fifth child, Nefertari knew what labor pains felt like. And that wasn’t what she was feeling. “I was watching TV when I felt like I got struck by lightning,” she remembers. Sweat poured down her face. It felt as if an elephant had settled on her chest. She struggled so hard for breath that she wanted to rip her shirt off. A full day later, after she had been airlifted to a second hospital, doctors realized she’d had a spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD)—a tear in a blood vessel of the heart that’s a common cause of heart attack in pregnant and postpartum women. At the hospital, Nefertari barely survived delivering a healthy baby daughter, Shayna.

CHANGE OF HEART: Before SCAD,
Nefertari put in long days working with disabled preschool children and shuttling her four kids to extracurriculars; after her heart attack, she had to slow down. She took up a new hobby—archery—that she’d seen in the Paralympic Games: “It seemed like something I, a disabled person too, could do with a weaker heart.” It’s also an important form of stress relief. “When you release and that arrow flies,” she says, “negativity flies out of your body.”
Do one thing: Make “me time” a regular thing. Some research suggests that extreme stress may raise SCAD risk, especially in women and even in those with an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Block off a few minutes on your calendar each day for engaging in an activity that calms you— listen to music, take a walk around the block, sip a cup of coffee or tea by yourself, or find a quiet area and just breathe.

fter winery-hopping with friends to toast her 27th birthday, Brittany woke up feeling… strange. She couldn’t move her hand or the right side of her body and couldn’t stand. ER doctors thought it was drugs, so it took five hours to get the CT scan that revealed that she’d had a massive stroke. “I thought strokes only happened to people my grandparents’ age,” she says. It turns out certain hormonal birth control pills plus stress can cause high blood pressure, raising stroke risk in young women. After a second stroke and two weeks in the hospital, Brittany started speech, vision, physical, and occupational therapy. CHANGE OF HEART: Brittany
vowed not to be set back. Just six weeks after the strokes, she graduated from the University of Texas School of Law. Now she practices law and prioritizes time doing something that simply brings her joy: remodeling houses with her fiancé.
Do one thing: Learn the
symptoms of stroke and remember that, while rare before age 45, it can happen at any age. Common signs: numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side; trouble seeing or walking; confusion; difficulty speaking.

hopping with her mom one day in 2014, Jackie could barely make it around the store. Back home that afternoon, despite her exhaustion, she couldn’t sleep, and her heart was pounding “erratically.” “Get dressed,” said her mother, a nurse. “We’re going to the hospital.” In her early 30s at the time, Jackie was astounded to discover that her heart was galloping at 200 beats per minute—more than double the normal resting heart rate. She was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat that can cause blood clots and stroke. She was put on betablockers to stabilize her ticker.
Do one thing: Listen to
your body. If normal activity feels a lot harder all of a sudden, you’re short of breath, or you notice a fluttering or rapid heartbeat, get to a doctor ASAP. You can also do this quick heart check: Climb a flight of stairs, and if pain or tiredness intensifies, call a doctor.

aggie was finishing a six-mile hike in the sand dunes near Lake Michigan when her chest started hurting and she was hit with a sense of impending doom. “Something felt really wrong,” she says. Yet when she went to urgent care, she still checked “no” next to the question “Are you experiencing chest pain?” She struggled to find the right words to explain what she was feeling, so she felt as if the doctors weren’t taking it seriously. It wasn’t until three pulse oximeters in a row failed to detect normal oxygen levels in her blood that doctors realized what was going on: Maggie was having a heart attack. Doctors put a stent in the blocked artery and a balloon in her heart’s left ventricle to open them up, but the permanent damage was significant. She was diagnosed with heart failure and now has a pacemaker-defibrillator in her chest.
CHANGE OF HEART: Three weeks
after her heart attack, Maggie married her longtime sweetheart and moved across the country to be closer to family. She now teaches other women in heart support groups how to get the medical attention they need.

1 Heat oven to 375°F. Line 2 small baking sheets with parchment paper. 2 Melt butter in small saucepan on low. Remove from heat and whisk in sugar, egg white, vanilla, and salt until blended. Beat in flour until smooth. 3 Drop 1 heaping tsp batter onto prepared sheet. With small metal spatula or back of spoon, spread batter evenly to form 3-in. round. Repeat with second tsp batter at least 4 in. away from first. 4 Bake until cookies are light golden, 6 to 7 min. Remove from heat and whisk in butter (it will sputter), then whisk in heavy cream, cocoa powder, and salt to dissolve. Add chocolate, let sit 3 min., then stir until melted and smooth (if desired, use immersion blender to get it extra smooth and silky). 2 Make churros: In medium saucepan, cook cinnamon stick on medium until fragrant, about 2 min. Add 1 cup water, olive oil, 1 Tbsp sugar, and salt and bring to a boil. Discard cinnamon stick, then remove from heat; quickly stir in flour with wooden spoon and let sit. 3 Add 4 in. vegetable oil to medium saucepan. Heat on medium to 350°F on candy thermometer. 4 Meanwhile, transfer hot churro batter to large bowl. Using electric mixer on low, beat 1 min. to cool slightly. Beat in egg (dough will be smooth and shiny). Transfer batter to pastry bag fitted with large star tip. 5 Working in 4 batches, squeeze 3-in. to 4-in. lengths of batter into oil, using scissors to snip off ends. Fry until golden brown, about 4 min., then transfer to wire rack set over paper towel. 6 In small bowl, combine ground cinnamon and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. When churros are cool enough to handle, coat in cinnamon sugar. Serve with chocolate-caramel sauce for dipping. 12 lasagna noodles 1 large onion, cut into large chunks 8 oz carrots, each cut into 3 chunks 2 stalks celery, each cut into 3 chunks 4 Tbsp olive oil, divided 1 lb sweet Italian sausage, casings removed 2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped ½ cup dry white wine 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese ½ cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped ⅓ cup plus 3 Tbsp grated Parmesan Kosher salt and pepper ¾ cup plus 1 cup marinara sauce ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese Green salad, for serving
1 Heat oven to 375°F. Cook lasagna noodles per pkg. directions, drain, and run under cold water to cool. 2 Meanwhile, in food processor, pulse onion, carrot, and celery until finely chopped. Heat 2 Tbsp oil in large castiron skillet on medium. Add onion mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 10 to 12 min.; transfer to large bowl. 3 Wipe out skillet and heat remaining 2 Tbsp oil on high. Add sausage and cook, breaking up with back of spoon until golden brown, 8 to 10 min. During last minute of cooking, add garlic and cook, stirring. Discard any excess fat. Add wine and simmer, scraping up any browned bits, until evaporated, about 1 min.
4 Reduce heat to mediumhigh. Return vegetables to pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 5 min. Return to large bowl. Fold in ricotta, parsley, ⅓ cup Parmesan, ¼ tsp salt, and ½ tsp pepper. 5 Spread half of marinara sauce in bottom of 9- by 13-in. baking dish. Working with 1 noodle at a time, lay on work surface and spread with ⅓ cup sausage filling. Roll up and transfer, seam side down, into prepared baking dish. Cover rollatini with remaining marinara sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella and remaining 3 Tbsp Parmesan. Bake until sauce is bubbling and cheese is starting to brown, 20 to 25 min. 1 Heat oven to 400°F. In medium bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, garlic, oregano, red pepper flakes, and ½ tsp salt. Fold in 1 cup mozzarella and all but 2 Tbsp Parmesan. 2 Transfer mixture to shallow broiler-safe 1-qt baking dish. Top with pizza sauce; sprinkle with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan, then pepperoni. Bake until bubbling and cheese is beginning to brown, about 15 min., broiling 1 to 2 min. if needed. Let rest 5 min. before serving. Serve with baguette slices for dipping.
