My Yay! List Fun finds that made me say yay!

You can get lucky! arch is a big month for us “wee folk.” You guessed it: With a name like Meaghan Murphy, I’m practically part leprechaun. Did I mention that my husband’s name is Patrick and we like to think of the 17th as St. Patrick (Murphy’s) Day?! No surprise that we’ll be serving up the corned beef on page 44 and recreating these pepper-print T-shirts. But even if you’re not Irish, the day is a shamrocking excuse to decide your luck is about to improve. I caught up with Richard Wiseman, Ph.D., author of The Luck Factor, who believes we can create our own luck regardless of our circumstances. Wiseman outlines several key life approaches to manifesting four-leaf-clover–level good fortune. 1. For starters, lucky people are resilient and manage to squeeze some upside from even the crummiest situation—given lemons, they make lemonade. For instance, when they run out of pancake batter on Sunday morning, they’ll think: I’ll hit the grocery store—we needed paper towels anyway! instead of Breakfast is ruined! 2. Also, fortunate folks are optimists who expect good things to come their way. 3. They live, as I like to say, “with their cab lights on,” relaxed and open to possibility, prepared to abandon routine and take smart risks. 4. Finally, the charmed ones rely heavily on gut instinct and boost their intuition with mind-clearing practices such as meditation. I challenge you to try out Wiseman’s advice—and if all else fails, maybe visit one of the lucky landmarks on page 30. Yay!

For certain adults with newly diagnosed metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that tests positive for PD-L1

= A CHANCE FOR MORE SNUGGLY SUNDAYS

A Chance to Live Longer™ THE 1ST AND ONLY FDA-APPROVED CHEMO-FREE COMBINATION OF 2 IMMUNOTHERAPIES THAT WORKS DIFFERENTLY In a study of newly diagnosed advanced NSCLC patients, half of those on OPDIVO + YERVOY were alive at 17.1 months versus 14.9 months on platinum-based chemotherapy. Results may vary. OPDIVO® + YERVOY® is not approved for patients younger than 18 years of age.

Indication & Important Safety Information for OPDIVO (nivolumab) + YERVOY (ipilimumab) Only your healthcare professional knows the specifics of your condition and how OPDIVO in combination with YERVOY may fit into your overall therapy. The information below does not take the place of talking with your healthcare professional, so talk to them if you have any questions. What are OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY are prescription medicines used to treat people with a type of advanced stage lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). OPDIVO may be used in combination with YERVOY as your first treatment for NSCLC when your lung cancer has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic) and your tumors are positive for PD-L1, but do not have an abnormal EGFR or ALK gene. It is not known if OPDIVO and YERVOY are safe and effective when used in children younger than 18 years of age. What is the most important information I should know about OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY are medicines that may treat certain cancers by working with your immune system. OPDIVO and YERVOY can cause your immune system to attack normal organs and tissues in any area of your body and can affect the way they work. These problems can sometimes become serious or life-threatening and can lead to death and may happen anytime during treatment or even after your treatment has ended. You may have more than one of these problems at the same time. Some of these problems may happen more often when OPDIVO is used in combination with YERVOY. Call or see your healthcare provider right away if you develop any new or worse signs or symptoms, including • Lung problems: new or worsening cough; shortness of breath; chest pain • Intestinal problems: diarrhea (loose stools) or more frequent bowel movements than usual; stools that are black, tarry, sticky, or have blood or mucus; severe stomach-area (abdominal) pain or tenderness • Liver problems: yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes; severe nausea or vomiting; pain on the right side of your stomach area (abdomen); dark urine (tea colored); bleeding or bruising more easily than normal

• Hormone gland problems: headaches that will not go away or unusual headaches; eye sensitivity to light; eye problems; rapid heartbeat; increased sweating; extreme tiredness; weight gain or weight loss; feeling more hungry or thirsty than usual; urinating more often than usual; hair loss; feeling cold; constipation; your voice gets deeper; dizziness or fainting; changes in mood or behavior, such as decreased sex drive, irritability, or forgetfulness • Kidney problems: decrease in the amount of urine; blood in your urine; swelling in your ankles; loss of appetite • Skin problems: rash; itching; skin blistering or peeling; painful sores or ulcers in mouth or nose, throat, or genital area • Eye problems: blurry vision, double vision, or other vision problems; eye pain or redness Problems can also happen in other organs and tissues. These are not all of the signs and symptoms of immune system problems that can happen with OPDIVO and YERVOY. Call or see your healthcare provider right away for any new or worsening signs or symptoms, which may include: • Chest pain; irregular heartbeat; shortness of breath; swelling of ankles • Confusion; sleepiness; memory problems; changes in mood or behavior; stiff neck; balance problems; tingling or numbness of the arms or legs • Double vision; blurry vision; sensitivity to light; eye pain; changes in eye sight • Persistent or severe muscle pain or weakness; muscle cramps • Low red blood cells; bruising Getting medical help right away may help keep these problems from becoming more serious. Your healthcare team will check you for these problems during treatment and may treat you with corticosteroid or hormone replacement medicines. Your healthcare team may also need to delay or completely stop your treatment if you have severe side effects. What should I tell my healthcare provider before receiving OPDIVO and YERVOY? Before you receive OPDIVO and YERVOY, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • have immune system problems such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or lupus • have received an organ transplant

Talk to your doctor about OPDIVO + YERVOY www.OPDIVOYERVOY.com 1-855-OPDIVOYERVOY • have received or plan to receive a stem cell transplant that uses donor stem cells (allogeneic) • have received radiation treatment to your chest area in the past and have received other medicines that are like OPDIVO • have a condition that affects your nervous system, such as myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barré syndrome • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. OPDIVO and YERVOY can harm your unborn baby • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if OPDIVO or YERVOY passes into your breast milk. Do not breastfeed during treatment with OPDIVO or YERVOY and for 5 months after the last dose of OPDIVO or YERVOY Females who are able to become pregnant: Your healthcare provider should do a pregnancy test before you start receiving OPDIVO or YERVOY. • You should use an effective method of birth control during your treatment and for at least 5 months after your last dose of OPDIVO or YERVOY. Talk to your healthcare provider about birth control methods that you can use during this time. • Tell your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during treatment with OPDIVO or YERVOY. You or your healthcare provider should contact Bristol Myers Squibb at 1-844-593-7869 as soon as you become aware of the pregnancy. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your healthcare providers and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. What are the possible side effects of OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY can cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about OPDIVO + YERVOY?” • Severe infusion reactions. Tell your healthcare team or nurse right away if you get these symptoms during an infusion of OPDIVO or YERVOY: chills or shaking; itching or rash; flushing; shortness of breath or wheezing; dizziness; feel like passing out; fever; back or neck pain

• Complications, including graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), of bone marrow (stem cell) transplant that uses donor stem cells (allogeneic). These complications can be severe and can lead to death. These complications may happen if you underwent transplantation either before or after being treated with OPDIVO or YERVOY. Your healthcare provider will monitor you for these complications. The most common side effects of OPDIVO when used in combination with YERVOY include: feeling tired; diarrhea; rash; itching; nausea; pain in muscles, bones, and joints; fever; cough; decreased appetite; vomiting; stomach-area (abdominal) pain; shortness of breath; upper respiratory tract infection; headache; low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism); decreased weight; and dizziness. These are not all the possible side effects of OPDIVO and YERVOY. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You are encouraged to report side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Call 1-800-FDA-1088. OPDIVO (10 mg/mL) and YERVOY (5 mg/mL) are injections for intravenous (IV) use. This is a brief summary of the most important information about OPDIVO and YERVOY. For more information, talk with your healthcare providers, call 1-855-673-4861, or go to www.OPDIVO.com.

Moderate-intensity physical activity like gardening can lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

You know about empowerment, but have you heard of inpowerment ?

I

n April I turn 45. Wow…wait, I’ll be 45?! Yes, it’s true…but I feel the best I ever have, and that is because I am an “inpowered” woman. Spell-check did not fail me; this is the word I use. Maybe you’re thinking about that other word, “empowered.” But I assure you, they are very different, and the difference is way more than the first two letters. Empowerment often lands in a sentence like “I want to empower you…” or “You are empowered to….” Empowerment seems to come from someone else, at their discretion. An inpowered woman is one who derives strength from God’s power within her, and His power is available all day, every day. For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

In my column as your Chief Spiritual Officer, I share a meaningful verse that lifts my spirits and guides me in the right direction. I hope it does the same for you!

No fear—that’s a promise! But wait, there’s more: The spirit given is one of power, love, and self-control. That’s quite a trifecta! So, I’ve got the power—now what? When faced with a tough situation or a slightly awkward moment, I take a deep breath and think No fear, and I exhale Love them. This may sound simple, but you know what? Simple works. Walk inpowered, and remember: Two little letters sometimes make a big difference.

Luckiest Places IN THE WORLD Put these lucky landmarks and their quirky traditions on your bucket list by Kristi Valentini

Trevi Fountain ROME

While this iconic fountain dates back to the 1700s, the tradition of tossing coins into it became even more popular in the 1950s thanks to the American rom-com Three Coins in the Fountain. These days you can find visitors throwing coins over their shoulders. Some say tossing in one coin assures you’ll return to Rome. Throwing two coins brings love, and three means you’ll get married. When not in Rome, we say the mall fountain might have its own magic.

Your coins may just bring luck to others: Money from the Trevi Fountain goes to charity.

God’s Acre Healing Springs BL ACKVILLE, SC

According to local lore, these springs have healing properties. The story goes that during the Revolutionary War, four soldiers near death made a full recovery after Native Americans encouraged them to drink water from the sacred springs. In 1944, a private owner left the land to God in his will so the springs could be accessible to all. So be sure to bring a bottle! Even if it doesn’t cure what ails you, drinking plenty of H2O is clearly a healthy habit. Cheers!

Jade Cove is a stunning spot for a treasure hunt.

Locals and tourists alike come searching for jade.

BOULDER CITY, NV

On the front lawn of the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus stands a sprawling oak tree more than 500 years old and nearly six stories tall. It’s said that those who enter its shade together will remain friends for the rest of their lives. (Many wedding ceremonies have taken place beneath its branches.) Now go call your childhood BFF.

There are many myths about why this limestone boulder is so special, such as that it is linked to Stonehenge or was a present from a great Scottish king. What the stories agree on: Kiss it and you’ll acquire the gift of gab (eloquence and persuasion).

Legend has it that rubbing the toes of the dam’s two 30-foot-tall bronze statues (called Winged Figures of the Republic) brings luck, a practice that’s definitely worth a try when you’re less than an hour from Las Vegas!

Designed by Oskar J.W. Hansen, the sculptures were installed in the mid-1930s.

Jade Cove BIG SUR, CA

Keep your eyes peeled while exploring Jade Cove and you may find your new lucky charm: a jade stone. (Jade stones range in color, but you’re most likely to find the dark green variety pictured at far left.) In many cultures around the world, jade is thought to bring good luck. So whether you score a stone at the beach, at a local shop, or even (shhh) on the Internet, there may be good fortune coming your way.

igh school is tough. But try doing it when you’re 3'9" tall, as Brandon was as a freshman, due to a rare form of dwarfism. Bullies at school set up an Instagram account to mock him, posting videos of Brandon with cruel captions like Nobody is ever going to love this ugly midget. Yet during high school, a chance encounter with an organizer for TEDxRVA in Richmond, VA, led Brandon to speaking onstage to 2,000 people about his struggles. It was an aha moment for him. “That was truly the first time I felt seen and heard and validated for my experience,” he remembers. “I’m not saying everybody can know what it’s like to be the size of a 7-year-old, but we can all relate to not feeling enough.” Elevating empathy became his mission. In 2018, Brandon, now 21 and a public speaker, helped Virginia state legislators pass a law requiring all public schools to teach empathy and emotional intelligence as part of their curricula. Recently he practiced what he preaches when a few of his tormentors apologized and shared their own stories of being abused or bullied. Brandon tried to understand their pain, because he sees it as the only way to stop future cycles of cruelty. “Empathy really is something that I believe is going to make a transformational dent in society, especially for my generation,” he says.

bout 10 years ago, Kathleen, 62, a Home Depot employee, started painting the front bib of her work apron with colorful scenes each season— snowmen, deer, flags, a pale pink cherry blossom tree (above). Kathleen’s aprons now look like the work of a pro, but she only started drawing and painting in her 50s. Once she realized she had a knack for it, she began to experiment with her aprons, first with markers and then with acrylic paints. She painted a stork holding a diaper for a pregnant coworker and the Grinch emerging from a pocket for another coworker’s Christmastime apron. It’s enough to stop busy customers like interior designer Shawna DiMattina in their tracks. “I was just so elated by the experience of working with Kathleen,” Shawna remembers. “I was like, ‘Look at your apron!’” It’s the spark of joy Kathleen goes for every day in her job. “I’m proud of it,” she says.

The Tireless Activist Simone Gordon EAST ORANGE, NJ

ome eight years ago, Simone, 34, approached nonprofit agencies for help getting diapers and formula for her now 10-year-old son, who has severe autism. She had no success, but then four strangers on Facebook not only bought her diapers but also enabled her to enroll in nursing school by paying her tuition, an act of kindness that made Simone tell the women, “I want to do the same thing for other women that you did for me.” So she started an Instagram account, @TheBlackFairyGodmotherOfficial, with one request for $1,000 in rent money for a single mom at risk of eviction. It worked—and with shout-outs from the likes of famed author Elizabeth Gilbert, her Instagram exploded. During the pandemic, so did the need. In 2020, Simone, her team of volunteers, and her social media followers helped house 121 families and raised nearly $500,000 to care for people about to slip through the cracks—often BIPOC single moms like Simone herself. Not even a battle with COVID-19 late last year could stop Simone from using her platform to encourage people to donate. She says: “When families send me videos of their children eating dinner, or they go, ‘My lights are on, my water is on’—that’s what keeps me going.”

artha, a 41-year-old emergency room nurse, regularly meets people on some of the worst days of their lives. She and her forensic nursing team may treat around 150 sexual assault victims a year, offering support and services ranging from physical exams to STI prevention. In 2019, a nurse colleague mentioned that an assault survivor had been visibly embarrassed about having to leave the building without a bra. Horrified, Martha thought, I never want this to happen again. She bought a supply of sports bras and cotton underwear that same day. Later she posted a picture of them on Facebook, writing, This is the underwear that no woman wants to wear….But here’s the kicker: That boring sports bra is WAY way WAY better than what some survivors get when they’re discharged. Her post started going viral, ultimately being shared 115,000 times, and donations of bras and underwear began pouring into not just her medical center in Bellingham, but hospitals around the country. Now Martha’s team stocks pants, shirts, and shoes, along with bras and panties, in a full range of sizes. She believes it’s a small act of kindness that is “a way to tell survivors that someone, even if it’s just me, cares about them.”

The Positive Thinker Molly Luppino PHILADELPHIA

A

fter special education teacher Molly, 27, learned that she had a brain tumor, she cried herself to sleep every night. That is, she did until, during one well-justified pity party, something shifted. “I don’t want to feel miserable,” she decided. “I want to feel happy.” Her approach: consistently reframing negative thoughts. “I’m only 24!” became “Thank God I’m young, so I can endure the surgery!” She even named her tumor Ted (“He was like a bad boyfriend”) to make the process less scary. Through months of therapy after doctors removed the (thankfully benign) tumor, Molly practiced gratitude: for parents who helped her practice walking and for exercises like yoga that calmed her enough to carry on. Even when she could handle working on her master’s thesis for only five minutes at a time, she used tactics she’d learned teaching special ed and persisted. Some post-Ted issues remain, like peripheral vision loss and a foggy memory. But so do the happy changes Molly made after her unexpected wake-up call. “Before, everything was about work, and I would put off family and friends,” she says. Now, she prioritizes relationships over future worries. For that she’s grateful to Ted. “That tumor was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Molly says cheerfully. “It’s changed my life for the better.”

The F half-full approach

eeling a little glass-half-empty? You’re not alone, but that constant stress can take a toll on your heart, triggering high blood pressure and inflammation that can lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes over time. Building resilience — healthy coping skills — is critical for overall wellness, and in particular for your heart. If you’re a person of color, it’s important to know about a recent study: It found that resilience is critical for Black people, who are at higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Here’s how we can all get better at bouncing back:

1

Prioritize you: Pay attention to your limits and take time to replenish and restore, emotionally and physically, says Simira Freeman, Psy.D., a psychologist in New York City. Do what makes you feel good—taking a stroll, cooking, jamming to your favorite tunes.

2 Live in the now: “Projecting too far My cup runneth over!

ahead can increase stress levels; stay present and grounded in what you can control,” says Freeman. “Gratitude may give you a chance to catch your breath.”

3 Find your squad: A solid support

system (of any size!) is crucial to resilience. “Identify the people who are ready and able to support you in various ways and who can give you the boost you need to get over hurdles,” says Freeman.

4 Zoom in on life’s good side:

“Perspective is everything, and silver linings are real. Viewing challenging experiences in positive ways can help you refocus on upsides,” says Freeman. “This helps you grow, learn, and feel in control.”

YO U R 4 - S T E P PL A N 1 Move, move, move Exercise is one of the best stress relievers. “When we’re active, our brain releases endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine—chemicals that make us feel good, boost mood, and alleviate anxiety and stress that can negatively impact our health,” says Tasha Brown, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in New York City. “You get to decide what type of movement works best for you. The key is to move!” Make a list of new exercises to try—dance, Pilates, Spin, running, yoga, strength training—and don’t forget about good ol’ walking.

2

3

Inhale, exhale

Us e y o u r five senses

Deep breathing can help lower your heart rate to tame tension. “I love this stress-management technique because you can do it any time, anywhere,” says Brown. Try it: Breathe in through your nose, inhaling deeply so your belly rises. Focus on your breath, then do a long exhale through your mouth. Repeat for 45 to 60 seconds and bask in the relief.

4 Fe e l a l l t h e fe e l s Talk about what’s bothering you— that can help you put it in the rearview, releasing tension. “The more you push down stress and don’t acknowledge its presence, the more it will show up in your body and cloud your thinking,” says RobinsonBrown. Seek out friends or family who are willing to lend an ear, spill your thoughts in a journal or a notes app on your phone, or consider talking to a therapist.

“Soothing yourself through your senses brings calm by tapping into brain pleasure centers to create feelings of peace and joy,” says Mel RobinsonBrown, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in New York City. Light a scented candle, soak in a beautiful view, sip your favorite tea, stand under a steamy shower, or put on a feel-good playlist.

F E E D YO U R S O U L

Load up on these: Reach for foods rich in vitamins C (strawberries, citrus, broccoli, bell peppers), B12 (salmon, tuna, shellfish), and B 6 (sweet potatoes, eggs, chickpeas, dairy). These vitamins are thought to play a role in relieving stress and keeping mood steady. Boost your magnesium with foods like pumpkin seeds, spinach, and black beans; studies suggest that it may help ease depression and anxiety.

Become mindful: “A good first step to changing any habit is to practice mindfulness, which means being present and paying attention to your mind, body, and surroundings without placing judgment on them,” says Samuels. Understanding what drives you toward comfort eating can give you the clarity to change things, like making smart food choices or growing your self-control over portion sizes, she adds.

Eat regularly: Low blood sugar can leave you more susceptible to emotional eating as a stress response, Samuels says. Help keep levels steady by eating every three to four hours. Reach for nutritious snacks with protein (nuts/ seeds, yogurt, cottage cheese) as well as fresh fruits and veggies. Build meals

out of lean protein, complex carbs like whole grains, healthy fat, and produce.

Savor your bites: It’s perfectly OK to enjoy a small portion of a more indulgent food—in moderation. “Take it slowly, and put your fork down between bites. This lets you enjoy the flavors, smells, and textures and how it makes you feel,” says Samuels. “It also helps you recognize when you’re full so you won’t overeat.”

Rethink treats: “Pair indulgences with protein and/or produce to get in some extra nutrients,” says Samuels. “Try a bit of chocolate with nuts and fruit, or a few chips with a little cheese and salsa.”

Consumer Brief Summary This summary contains risk and safety information for patients about EYLEA. It does not include all the information about EYLEA and does not take the place of talking to your eye doctor about your medical condition or treatment. What is EYLEA? EYLEA is a prescription medicine that works by blocking vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF can cause fluid to leak into the macula (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye responsible for sharp central vision). Blocking VEGF helps reduce fluid from leaking into the macula. What is EYLEA used for? EYLEA is indicated for the treatment of patients with: • Neovascular (Wet) Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) • Macular Edema Following Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) • Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) • Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) How is EYLEA given? EYLEA is an injection administered by your eye doctor into the eye. Depending on your condition, EYLEA injections are given on different schedules. Consult with your eye doctor to confirm which EYLEA schedule is appropriate for you. Who should not use EYLEA? Do not use EYLEA if you have an infection in or around the eye, eye pain or redness, inflammation in the eye, or are allergic to aflibercept and/or any other ingredients in EYLEA. What is the most important information I should know about EYLEA? • EYLEA must only be administered by a qualified eye doctor. Injection into the eye with EYLEA can result in an infection in the eye and retinal detachment (separation of retina from back of the eye) can occur. Inflammation in the eye has been reported with the use of EYLEA. If your eye becomes red, sensitive to light, painful, or develops a change in vision, seek immediate care from an eye doctor • In some patients, injections with EYLEA may cause a temporary increase in eye pressure within 1 hour of the injection. TO DO

Protect your eyes Keep your vision sharp by exercising, not smoking, eating healthy, and controlling cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. You’ll lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts, says new research.

Light the way for migraine relief Green lights aren’t just for traffic signals! When people in a small new study spent an hour or two a day for 10 weeks basking in green LED lights, their migraine frequency and intensity dropped by more than 50%. Doctors plan to keep studying this therapy to find out how and why it works.

Relax with a massage A new reason you might, uh, knead a massage: Sure, it feels great, but also recent research proves that a 10-minute neckand-shoulder rub can lower stress levels dramatically. Treat yourself at home with a shoulder massager from TruMedic.

Take a catnap! Celebrate National Napping Day on March 15—just keep your siesta short. People who sleep six or more hours at night and then snooze for over an hour during the day have a 34% higher risk of heart disease than those who don’t nap. Scientists aren’t sure why, but excess zzz’s may promote inflammation.

Consider the shingles shot

If you get migraine s, ask your doc if usin g a gree n light might help.

This herb has a calming effect that has been shown to alleviate anxiety and even depression. Brew a steamy cup of chamomile tea, take a sip, then breathe a deep sigh of relief. Tea-rrific!

There’s a lot to love about these legumes: They are high in moodregulating folate and contain tryptophan, an amino acid used by the body to produce the feel-good chemical serotonin.

Life driving you nuts? Try these. A study found that a diet rich in walnuts (and walnut oil) helped reduce some stress responses, such as rising blood pressure, likely due to omega-3s.

This is a two-for-one when it comes to stress-relief eats! Soybeans contain compounds linked to serotonin production and a blood sugarsteadying combo of protein and fiber. Sold!

Hot Fudge Golden Grahams Parfait ACTIVE 30 MIN. ✦ TOTAL 1 HR. 30 MIN. ✦ SERVES 8

PARFAIT: BRIAN WOODCOOK. CORNED BEEF AND POPCORN: MIKE GARTEN.

1 3 ¾ ¼ 2½

cup sugar Tbsp honey tsp kosher salt tsp baking soda cups Golden Grahams cereal ½ cup toasted sliced almonds Spicy Hot Fudge Sauce (recipe at right) 2 pints vanilla ice cream Whipped cream and cherries, for topping

1 Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment; lightly grease. In medium saucepan on medium, bring sugar, honey, and 3 Tbsp water to a boil. Cook without stirring until mixture is deep amber, 6 to 7 min.; remove from heat. Immediately stir in salt and baking soda, then quickly stir in cereal and almonds. 2 Using rubber spatula, spread mixture in even layer on prepared baking sheet. Let cool until hardened, 40 to 45 min. Break into clusters. 3 Layer Spicy Hot Fudge Sauce, brittle, and scoops of ice cream in parfait glasses. Top with whipped cream and cherries. Spicy Hot Fudge Sauce MAKES 1½ CUPS

In medium saucepan, whisk together ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar. Whisk in ½ cup heavy cream and 2 Tbsp corn syrup. Cook on medium until warm, 4 to 5 min. Remove from heat and stir in 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, 1½ tsp pure vanilla extract, ½ tsp ground cinnamon, and a pinch of cayenne until smooth. Cool, whisking occasionally, until just warm, 15 to 20 min.

From Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, page 44

Corned Beef & Roasted Cabbage ACTIVE 25 MIN. ✦ TOTAL 3 HR. 45 MIN. ✦ SERVES 8 (WITH LEFTOVER BEEF)

1 3-lb piece corned beef (with spice packet if included) 1 12-oz bottle pale ale 1 medium onion, quartered 2 cloves garlic 2 dried bay leaves 1 small head green cabbage (about 1¾ lbs), cut into 8 wedges Kosher salt and pepper 2 Tbsp olive oil Chopped parsley, for serving

1 Place corned beef in large pot. Add ale, onion, garlic, bay leaves, 1½ cups water, and contents of spice packet (if included) and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until tender and easily pierced with fork, 2½ to 3 hr.

Popcorn Rainbow Use a bowl to trace a semicircle onto parchment paper. Coat popcorn in melted colored candy melts (you’ll need about 1 cup popcorn and 6 oz candy melts each for the two outer arches, ½ cup popcorn and 4 oz candy melts each for the two middle arches, and ¼ cup popcorn and 2 oz candy melts each for the two inner arches). Using the traced arch as a guide, arrange into a rainbow. Pile popcorn coated in melted white chocolate at one end to make a cloud.

2 Half an hour before corned beef is finished, heat oven to 425°F. Heat large cast-iron skillet on medium-high. Season cabbage with ½ tsp each salt and pepper. In batches, add 1 Tbsp oil and 4 pieces cabbage and cook until golden brown, 3 min. per side; transfer to rimmed baking sheet and repeat. 3 Transfer beef to foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Transfer both beef and cabbage baking sheets to oven and roast until cabbage is just tender and beef has browned, 12 to 15 min. 4 Transfer beef to cutting board and thinly slice. Serve with roasted cabbage and sprinkle with parsley. PER SERVING 405 CAL, 30.5 G FAT (9.5 G SAT), 27 G PRO, 1,515 MG SODIUM, 6 G CARB, 2 G FIBER

WD TEST KITCHEN TIP Searing the cabbage in a cast-iron pan instead of boiling it caramelizes the veggie’s natural sugars, making it extra sweet and a perfect contrast to the salty corned beef.
