(No host wants to run out of food or drink; it’s the worst.) At the request of his mother, Jesus helped by changing water into wine— really great wine. W
hen I first walked into that newsroom, I recall a professor telling me I was going to have a tougher time because of my race and gender,” says Gilliam of becoming the first African American woman reporter at the Washington Post in 1961. It turned out that changing those negative perceptions was exactly why she was there: “I am who I am because somebody loved me— people in my family, my church, my community. Even though Jim Crow had all hell breaking out around us [when I was growing up in Kentucky], we knew we weren’t ‘less than’—that love gave us a sense of ourselves. I wanted to use journalism to begin letting those who would be open know more about the Black community.” During her 33-year career at the Post, she shared with readers her view from the front lines of the fight for racial justice and shared with younger journalists her experience as a mentor and cofounder of what is now the Maynard Institute. “I saw myself as one tiny player in a larger drama, but knew it was important for me to succeed,” she says. “We still have a long way to go, but there have been positive changes even just in the past year. Hopefully we’ll continue to see willingness on the part of Americans to talk to and know each other.”

The Caretaker Nina Bellamy, 97
B
orn in 1924, not long before the Great Depression, Bellamy had what most would consider a hard childhood. Still, this time offered valuable lessons about caring for others that she has passed on to her children. As she was growing up, everyone in her family helped put food on the table: “When I was a girl, I started stringing tobacco. Back in them days, when you got paid, you brought the money home; you didn’t go and spend it on what you wanted. I’m thankful for that, because it taught me not to make plans with money till I get it in my hands.” Later, as a mother of 13(!) children, she helped care for local sick kids whose parents didn’t have money for a doctor. She was always ready with advice—and still is: “When I see people doing wrong, I just got to tell them. You can be grown and be wrong. If somebody keeps saying you are wrong but you think you are right, it’s a problem. You need to listen.” What, for her, is the secret to happiness? “God and family are key,” she says. “I have been through thick and thin, but the Lord has brought me through. And I still have the Lord— and my grandchildren—helping me through.” W O M A N S D AY. C O M

I
n the field of nutrition and dietetics, Gladys Jennings, R.D., was a step ahead. Her graduate research (in 1947!) focused on microwave ovens’ effect on the nutrients in food. In the 1960s, she was one of the first to examine what are now called “food deserts” and socioeconomic factors affecting nutritional health in Black communities. She has won numerous awards, but more important to her are the lives she has touched as a professor. One former student is a past president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; another founded a nonprofit in Malawi. Then there are the ones who have stopped her in stores to say, “‘You taught me nutrition, and this is what it meant to me and my family.’ ” She feels “privileged to have supported them.” Even though she’s retired, she still finds herself giving advice about nutrition and health. One of her primary lessons: “Our bodies were intended for use, not for pushing a button. So the more you can use your body physically, the better off you are.”

T
hough Thomas got the message early on that “electronics was not for girls,” the drive to figure out what makes things tick led her to majoring in physics in college before joining NASA. “When I started, I had to write programs for computers—I had never seen a computer in real life!” she admits. “I always wanted to learn, and at NASA I had a lot of opportunities to do that.” Opportunities for advancement, however, were scarce: “I enjoyed working on things that hadn’t been done before. But I wasn’t getting promoted, and other [African Americans] were going through the same thing.” So she helped found Humanitarian United Effort, an employee organization to set up networking opportunities. In 1995, Thomas retired as associate chief of the Space Science Data Operations Office and got a doctorate in educational leadership. She continues to lead organizations that get young people interested in STEM and aviation (she heads her local Shades of Blue chapter) and is helping design a new space-themed science center. “It will have lots of information about contributions by African Americans. It’s exciting!” she says.

A
s a teacher in Greenville, SC, for 37 years, Harris modeled the kind, welcoming behavior she expected from the students who entered her classroom. These days she introduces visitors and residents to the downtown area by way of a huge mural created to honor her years guiding the city’s children. She hopes it shows that Greenville is now a community of “diversity, unity, love, and compassion”—and she’s done the work to help make it that way. Early in her career, Harris was chosen to be one of the first teachers to desegregate city schools. “There was a big PTA meeting, and some of the parents were really upset because, they said, ‘We never wanted a [N-word] to teach our children.’ I decided that school year would be the best those children ever had,” she says. “The parents came around. The joy of teaching for me was not only inspiring the children, but trying to inspire the parents too.” In fact, one of her best teaching memories is of a parent who phoned to apologize for having called her a racial slur 20 years earlier. As Harris recalls, “She said, ‘I decided I want to be a teacher in my later years, and I want to be the person you were.’ ” W O M A N S D AY. C O M

hen the onset of COVID-19 canceled Nana’s original 70th-birthday plans, I rallied my siblings, our spouses, and all 11 grandkids to surprise her with a very special backyard bash. The look on her face (above) says it all: I finally pulled one over on my mom, who was truly blown away. A top tip I learned from Ashley Allegretta of Personal Touch Catering Experience, who helped plan the party: Bring indoor furniture outside. Having upholstered chairs and a farmhouse-style table created a dreamy “dining room” that was the perfect setting for sangria cheers (and a few happy tears) long into the night as we polished off strawberry shortcake, Nana’s favorite.

4½ lbs chicken thighs Kosher salt and pepper 4 large ears corn, shucked 2 cups packed fresh basil leaves 1 cup packed fresh mint leaves ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan 1 clove garlic ½ cup fresh lemon juice ¼ cup olive oil
1 Heat grill to medium. Season chicken with 1 tsp each salt and pepper. Add chicken and corn to grill. Grill corn, covered, until tender and slightly charred, turning occasionally, about 8 min. Transfer to cutting board. Grill chicken, covered, turning over once, until cooked through (165°F on instantread thermometer), 15 to 20 min. Transfer chicken to platter and let rest at least 10 min. 2 Meanwhile, in food processor, pulse basil, mint, Parmesan, garlic, and ½ tsp salt until finely chopped. 1 Make cake: Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat 9- by 13-in. baking pan and line bottom with parchment paper, leaving 2-in. overhang on 2 long sides. In medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. using overhangs, remove cake and transfer to wire rack to cool completely. When cake is cool, transfer to cutting board and cut into 1-in. cubes. 7 Meanwhile, prepare frosting: Using electric mixer fitted with whisk attachment, combine cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until smooth, scraping down side of bowl as needed. With mixer running, slowly pour in heavy cream. Stop and scrape bottom and side of bowl. Increase speed to slightly more than medium and continue whipping until stiff peaks form, about 3 min. Do not overwhip. 8 To serve, fill eight 8-oz jars halfway with cake cubes, pressing down slightly to fit. Top with about 2 Tbsp frosting, then about ¼ cup berries. Like everything else, the brain changes over time—but knowing what to expect means you can take charge now. It will shrink, neurons won’t communicate as well, and the flow of oxygenrich blood to it may slow. This affects aspects of mental function including memory, thinking, decisionmaking, and attention.
Starting in our 40s, muscle mass, strength, and flexibility can decrease, and muscles don’t contract as well. “Maintaining a routine to combat these changes can help women avoid diminished endurance, balance, and coordination,” says Teddy Savage, head of health and fitness at Planet Fitness.
As you get older, arteries can stiffen. This raises blood pressure and causes this muscle to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. The risk of heart disease also increases, as cholesterol and blood sugar typically rise.

Daily to-do’s for “ta-da!” results Add these smart moves to your daily routine for greater heart, brain, and muscle health
WORK IT OUT Exercise forces your heart to pump more blood, and getting your heart rate up regularly over time keeps arteries flexible, lowering blood pressure and helping your heart run more efficiently. That enhanced blood flow also means more oxygen is getting to your brain, which supports good cognitive function. And of course exercise helps keep your muscles strong and working as they should.
Make a habit of doing activities that get your heart racing and target major muscle groups. “Walking, jogging, biking, and swimming are just a few great ways to check all the boxes,” Savage says. Incorporate light strength training and stretching into your regular routine—things that support strong, flexible, mobile muscles. Give dance a chance—it “requires rhythmic patterns and exercises that focus on hand-eye coordination, helping keep the brain sharp and alert,” says Savage.

SLEEP BETTER

When you get enough shut-eye, your body is more able to keep inflammation in check. In the heart, this helps prevent blood vessel damage, reduction of blood flow, and blood clots. Sleep is also critical to good brain function, and muscle-building hormones are secreted while you snooze. Be consistent, which means trying your best to maintain the same sleep schedule seven days a week (yes, even on the weekend!). Sleeping erratically messes with your internal body clock (a.k.a. your circadian rhythm), triggering inflammation.
EAT WELL Pile your plate with different types of fruits and veggies, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats, and sip plenty of H2O to help ensure a steady flow of all the nutrients your body needs to function well.
Make your bedroom a sleep haven. Try shades or blackout curtains to eliminate disruptive light, use earplugs or a whitenoise machine to drown out sounds, and set the thermostat between 60°F and 71°F, which experts say promotes the best sleep.
Focus on lean protein, which is key to muscle growth and strength, supports healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and is good for your noggin. “Adequate protein is important to optimize cognitive function and deliver essential nutrients to brain cells,” explains the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Stefani Sassos.

On every label, you’ll see a percent daily value (% DV) for key nutrients, says Blatner. Aim to keep added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat at around 5% or lower. BEWARE of buzzwords

4 Divide batter between prepared pans (about 3½ cups each) and bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 35 to 40 min. Let cakes cool in pans 5 min., then invert onto wire rack to cool completely. 5 While cakes cool, make frosting: In large bowl, using electric mixer, beat ricotta until smooth. Beat in zests, cinnamon, and salt. Mix in confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Add heavy cream and, using whisk attachment, beat on medium-high speed until thick and stiff, 3 to 4 min. Refrigerate until ready to use. 6 Cut cakes in half horizontally to create 4 layers. Arrange four 3-in.-wide strips of parchment or waxed paper in square around edge of serving plate (this will help keep plate clean) and place 1 cake layer on plate. Spread 1 cup frosting on top. Add another layer of cake and repeat with remaining layers, then frost top and side of cake. 7 Gently press pistachios, cannoli shells, and remaining ½ cup chocolate chips onto side of cake (use parchment paper to help pat them on). Refrigerate until ready to serve (up to 2 days).

Set 1 piece aside. 6 For large melon slice: Stack 3 cake layer halves with ⅓ cup white frosting between each pair (invert top layer so flat side faces up). For small melon wedges: Cut reserved piece of cake into 3 wedges. Frost slice and wedges with thin layer of remaining white frosting. 7 Frost rounded edges of cakes with dark green frosting. Using flat side of decorating tip, pipe pale green frosting along edge of dark green frosting on sides and top. Pipe squiggly lines onto sides over dark green frosting. With spatula, smear pale green lines to create the look of watermelon rind. 8 Reserve ½ cup red-orange frosting. With remaining red-orange frosting, frost top and straight sides of cakes, leaving about ½-in. border of white frosting. Cut chocolate-covered raisins in half lengthwise. Place cut sides up into redorange frosting for seeds. Refrigerate several hours or overnight to set. 9 Transfer large melon slice to serving tray, standing it on rounded edge. Frost back side of cake with reserved redorange frosting; decorate with additional chocolatecovered raisins. Place small wedges on tray with large slice. 3 Reduce mixer speed to low and alternately mix in flour mixture and buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture, just until flour is incorporated. Mix in food coloring (if using) to tint pale pink. 4 Divide batter among prepared pans and bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 23 to 25 min. Cool in pans 10 min., then invert onto wire racks to cool completely. 5 In medium bowl, toss together preserves and remaining 3 cups raspberries. Place 1 layer on cake plate and top with half of preserve mixture; repeat 1 more time. Top with remaining cake layer. Refrigerate while making frosting. 6 In large bowl, using electric mixer, beat butter and cream cheese on medium speed, 2 min. Add raspberries, vanilla, and salt and beat until raspberries are broken down, 20 sec. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add confectioners’ sugar, mixing until blended and smooth after each addition, about 1 min. 7 Frost top and sides of cake with frosting. 2¼ cups plain yogurt 1½ tsp vanilla bean paste 3 Tbsp plus 1 tsp honey, divided 1¾ cups raspberries, divided 2 peaches, pitted and roughly chopped into½-in. pieces 1½ oz mini meringues

1 lb pizza dough, at room temp 3 peaches or nectarines, each pitted and cut into 8 wedges 1 tsp olive oil Kosher salt and pepper 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 2 tsp chopped tarragon 3 oz Gruyère cheese, grated 2 cups baby arugula 4 oz thinly sliced prosciutto
1 Heat grill to medium. Divide pizza dough in half and shape each piece into 5- by 14-in. rectangle. 2 Toss peaches with oil and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Grill dough and peaches until lightly charred, 3 to 5 min. per side. Transfer peaches to large bowl and pizza dough to cutting board. 3 Toss peaches with lemon juice, tarragon, and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Sprinkle Gruyère over dough and grill, covered, until melted, 2 to 3 min. 4 Add arugula to peaches and toss to coat. Top cheesy pizza dough with prosciutto and peach-arugula salad.

mixture through fine-mesh sieve set over small bowl, working pulp well to get as much smooth puree out as possible. Discard seeds. Drizzle and dollop raspberry puree onto yogurt layer. 3 Scatter with remaining cup raspberries, then peaches and meringues. Freeze until solid, about 2 hr. 4 To serve, peel off parchment and break bark into shards.
