Traders 500 One of the most highly anticipated programs in Australia’s electrical industry kicked off in the first week of May with the Brisbane leg of L&H’s Traders 500 tradeshow.

RNA Showgrounds were abuzz as Contractors filled the exhibition hall and took the opportunity to talk directly to over 50 suppliers.

Now in its 4th year, Traders 500 has grown to be a key communication tool for L&H as Geoff McDonald, General Manager - Supplier Operations for L&H Group explains. “There’s nothing else in the electrical industry like Traders where customers can update their knowledge on new technologies, try out new products and network with their peers. We’re really proud at L&H that we are able to facilitate all this.”

With attendance numbers for the Brisbane event well up on last year, it’s obvious that the word is out regarding Traders 500. “This is my 3rd year here”, said Tom Duggan from Coorparoo. “I employ three sparkies and an apprentice and have no hesitation in bringing them all along. It’s a chance for us to get up to speed with new products and find out what’s happening in our industry.”

It’s not all work for those attending Traders 500 though.

The boys on the stand of power tool manufacturer Milwaukee were kept busy as visitors lined up to go into the draw to win one of two Harley Davidson’s. “We were wrapt with the interest in our Harley promo”, said Adrian Kennedy, National Account Manager for Milwaukee. “By just spending $100 on Milwaukee products or accessories at L&H, you get a speeding ticket that puts you in the draw.”

The incentives continued over at the Olex stand where a trip for one to Paris was up for grabs. By simply spending $1,000 on Olex cable, Contractors went into the draw that could see them donning a beret and jetting off to France. The same opportunity will be available to Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne attendees of Traders 500 as well.

As the clock ticked over to 4.00pm, Happy Hour commenced with Contractors, Suppliers and L&H staff combining for a hard earned drink. A VIP section within the central L&H booth was set aside for exclusive use by

ACCESS members as part of their membership privileges. No rest for L&H staff though as they were kept busy registering new members to the program.

With beer in hand, Tom from Coorparoo said he would encourage everyone in the electrical trade to get along to Traders 500 in their state. “I invest a few hours here, brush up on the latest and catch up with others that work in a bloody good industry. Scoring a Harley for the garage wouldn’t go astray either.”

HPM Legrand HPM Legrand was formed in 2007 when leading global specialists in electrical and digital building infrastructures, Legrand purchased Australian electrical industry icon HPM.

Five years on and the company offers an enormous breadth of products based on world class technologies thanks to an extensive global network that sees the Legrand brand with a presence in more than 60 countries and employing 33,000 people.

With credentials like that, it’s not surprising that HPM Legrand often get approached to assist with projects that for others, would be immediately filed in the ‘too hard for us basket’.

Ben Foujols, Specialised Product Business Development Manager for HPM Legrand recounts one such undertaking. “We obviously work very closely with our contractor customers and it’s because of these relationships that often, opportunities are presented to us. We recently had the challenging task of providing power to each individual position of a 400 seat amphitheatre”.

Sydney’s Macquarie University is one of the country’s most awarded institutions and prides itself on producing outstanding graduates. To achieve this, the university invests heavily in facilities and infrastructure so the amphitheatre solution had to be worlds best – no cutting corners, nothing but state-of-the-art.

The main seating fit-out was awarded to leading furniture manufacturer Sebel who, through their contractor partner discovered an enormous problem when it came to delivering power to independent seats. “Due to the curvature of the amphitheatre, traditional solutions such as power points and

trunking were not flexible enough to meet the requirements of the building plan, or the students for that matter”, says Ben. “The first ten rows involve a 40° radius then from there, gradually straighten out as you progress up”.

Working closely with the contractor, HPM Legrand devised a bespoke solution based around their Mainline track based framework.

“Mainline is a busbar system that when connected to an electricity supply creates a circuit that allows power to be accessed anywhere along its length”, says Ben. “Once installed, we simply add 240V sockets that can be removed or repositioned allowing students to customise their power requirements”.

Because of the versatile nature of the Mainline approach, the initial tight radius of the first ten rows proved no problem at all. Tracks were installed under each row of seats with removable end caps fitted in case extension is required sometime in the future. “This solution adapts itself to the population of the room”, Ben says. “For example, small groups can access their power needs by simply

moving the points safely to where they need them instead of being spread out around the room as a result of the positioning of fixed power points”.

Like any commercial installation, Macquarie University were keen to not only maximise their technology value but also make a financially responsible decision as well. As the Mainline solution negates the need for power boards and extension leads, there are no additional or ongoing costs of replacing missing or damaged leads. “This also assisted with potential safety issues like tripping hazards that exposed leads and boards often present”, added Ben. So from a function, form and execution perspective, Macquarie’s amphitheatre is now on par with the university’s other technologically advanced amenities. “The end result is that we helped create a far better learning environment”, concludes Ben. “By working with all stakeholders, we were able to achieve an outcome that satisfies current requirements but importantly, will move with the times as well”.

NHP In keeping with the simple promise of ‘Great Service’, L&H continued it’s commitment to Contractors throughout Australia when during the month of March, travelling roadshows were held at locations across Tasmania including Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.

NHP hit the road along with over 30 other leading electrical suppliers to the Australian electrical industry for events that saw a combined 300 eager sparkies and electrical engineers come through the doors.

Exhibiting a new custom built stand, NHP showcased a number of cutting edge technologies and products including the Grizz-Barr Isolation Chassis and MOD6 circuit protection. “We had great interest in both of these product ranges”, said NHP sales representative Peter Williams. “We make a point at these L&H shows to present new and relevant products that will make a difference to a sparkies job.”

Also on display was the new range of ISO plugs and sockets. The sockets are available in single phase and three phase versions, covering a large current range from 10 A to 50 A to accommodate the existing range of ISO plugs. This exclusive range is available

in Electric Orange and Resistant Orange (RO) material that enhances its chemical resistance capability.

Peter says that visitors showed interest in the new range of N-Line quality isolating switches as well. “The new N-Line isolators are a cost-effective solution to a number of applications such as reverse cycle air conditioning, pool & spa pumps or outdoor lighting. “The car racing game meant that our stand was constantly busy with customers waiting for a turn”, said Peter. “ This gave us a great chance to speak to them while they taunted and heckled their colleagues!”
