Silent Auction Instructions Over 100 items in this auction are offered through the Silent Auction. Silent Auction items are displayed with a Silent Auction bid card (“S”) in addition to the identification label. To place a bid, print your name clearly on the card. (There is a minimum 50% bid on all auction items.) Please honor the minimum bid increase of $10. Failure to do so will disqualify your bid. Include your phone number so that we can contact you if you are not present to pick up your work at the end of the auction. Bids made without full names and phone numbers may be disqualified. Bids may be placed until 7:15pm in the middle gallery and 7:30pm in the large gallery on auction night, April 12, just before the Live Auction begins. The names of winners of Silent Auction items will be posted during the Live Auction on April 12. You may claim your Silent Auction item starting one hour after the close of Silent Auction bidding. On Monday, April 14, telephone calls to winners who were not present on auction night will be made to inform them of their winning bid and to arrange for the pick-up of the item. We ask that winning bidders claim their items as soon as possible. BUY OUT OPTION Silent Auction items are available for “buy-out” at 200% of the posted retail value. Bids of that amount or more are not considered buy-outs unless the item has been paid for in advance. To buy-out an item, see the receptionist in the lobby. The primary inspiration for my work is life in all its forms. As an artist and amateur naturalist, I collect the colors and patterns of the world around me and attempt to preserve them in my hand painted and printed fabrics, photo images, pieced designs and books. I spend part of everyday out-ofdoors observing the coming and going of life in nature. I am fascinated by the magical effects of light, atmosphere and time on the luminosity of a leaf, the dazzle of color refracted through an icicle and the way the winter grasses sketch portraits of the wind. I am mesmerized by an evening sky filled with migrating geese and reflected in a pond where the wind-rippled surface turns it into a mercurial impressionist painting.

Rick Mitchell is an independent artist, photographer and writer living in Lawrence, Kansas. He earned a BFA degree in Painting from the University of Kansas and an MFA in Art from Rutgers University. Mitchell has exhibited his work since 1970 and has received grants to further his interdisciplinary work from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the New Jersey Arts Commission, the New Jersey Historical Commission, the Kansas Arts Commission, Kansas Health Foundation and the Lawrence Arts Commission.

3 John Talleur L-0 Party, circa 1980

John Talleur was a professor emeritus of art and an honorary print curator at the University of Kansas. Born in Chicago in 1925, he received his bachelor’s degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947. In 1951, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Mauricio Lasansky. He received a Fulbright Fellowship in 1953 for study in France. Later that year he joined the faculty at KU where he taught until 1996. He died in Lawrence, KS in 2001. Talleur’s etchings and paintings have been in numerous exhibits around the world. Collections include the Spencer Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

4 Susan Davidoff L-100

Susan Davidoff’s imposing plant silhouettes are records of her daily interactions with the landscape. Beautifully rendered, yet hauntingly stark, the images catalogue her natural surroundings through the use of materials collected from nature. Davidoff received an M.A. and an M.F.A. from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. She has received awards from the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Society of Arts and Letters, among others. She has taught at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and currently teaches at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Louis Copt is from Emporia, Kansas. He graduated from Emporia State University in 1971 with a degree in art. Copt began his career as a full time artist in 1985 after returning from a summer of study at the Art Students League in New York City. The focus of Copt’s art includes landscape, portrait, figurative painting, sculpture and photography. His work has been featured in two recent exhibits at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri and the Sabatini Gallery in Topeka, Kansas. His work has been published in American Artist Magazine and numerous scholarly publications including The Great Plains Quarterly. Copt has also exhibited work in national competitions such as the National Oil Painters and Kansas Watercolor Societies. Image recently published in The Independent. Born February 5, 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri, William S. Burroughs was an innovative writer and artist. A primary figure in the Beat Generation, Burroughs deeply influenced popular culture with dozens of books and hundreds of paintings, essays, spoken word performances and multi-media collaborations. William S. Burroughs made his home in Lawrence, Kansas, where he lived and created art from 1981 until his death in 1997. During that time, Burroughs continued his explorations in material and process, and created a large body of work. Burroughs’ work has been featured in over fifty international galleries and museums including Royal Academy of the Arts, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim Museum, New Museum, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum, Spencer Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Janet Davidson-Hues investigates and combines language and image in order to set up a tension between the verbal and the visual in her paintings and prints. She was born in Baltimore and is an MFA graduate from the University of Kansas and former Assistant Professor of Art at Indiana State University. She has exhibited her work nationally in 20 solo shows and 130 invitational and group shows. She is represented by the Flomenhaft Gallery in New York City and Weinberger Fine Art in Kansas City. Recently featured in Ceramics Monthly magazine, Ben is known for creating whimsical ceramic figures that contain a vein of wit and humor, with an undertone of deviousness and mystery. Ben studied at Southern University Edwardsville and received his M.F.A. at Ohio University. Angie Pickman lives and works as a full-time cut paper artist in Lawrence, Kansas, often operating under the moniker, “Rural Pearl.” She received her bachelor’s degree from Benedictine College in 2001 and her master’s degree from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 2004. She worked in New York City for a number of years before returning to Kansas in 2009 to pursue her artistic career full-time. She exhibits at galleries and art fairs nationally, does illustration work, and teaches various classes and workshops at the Lawrence Arts Center. www.ruralpearl.com

10 Elizabeth Grandma Layton L-56 (1909-1993) Cinderella

Elizabeth Layton, a native of Wellsville, Kansas began drawing in 1977 at the age of sixty-eight when she took a drawing class at a local university. In class she learned to use the technique of “blind” contour drawing in which the artist looks at the paper only for points of reference, concentrating on the subject reflected in the mirror rather than the line being drawn on the paper. Every day, Layton worked at creating self-portraits that reflect her response to contemporary social issues. That fall, a local newspaper reporter, Don Lambert, was searching for an interesting subject for an article and stumbled upon the class display at the college. Upon discovering the drawings of this “old woman from small-town America,” Don became her biggest fan – and promoter - and to this day continues to tirelessly promote her drawings and her story.

This was one of those moments that took my breath away and I wanted to live in forever. I enjoy photographing my immediate surroundings here in Lawrence, Kansas, and my hope is that my images resonate with the viewer as if you were actually there watching the scene unfold for yourself. I currently teach photography classes at the Lawrence Arts Center and I am a freelance photographer, but my true love is travel photography.â&#x20AC;?

John Newman makes sculptures that are, in essence, assemblages of several disparate specific objects and materials. He may, for instance, combine wicker, cast metal, tulle, gilded paper, gauze, glass and rope to make highly unique intimate forms that draw on but transcend cultural references, and speak to the universe of intangibles such as warped space, time, sound and light travel, while at the same time compelling a kind of spiritual and intellectual focus. As his sculptures reflect the organic and fluid nature of drawing, his drawings and prints compress and then reactivate the shapes and movement on the 2 dimensional surface. The lithograph Red Through and Through reflects some of the process he goes through in evolving a finished image. Margaret is active in the arts education and non-profit community, presenting in national forums such as the Arts Education Partnershipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Forum and the National Association for State Arts Agencies National Assembly. She has served as a panelist for the US Department of Education, National Endowment for the Arts, Mid America Arts Alliance and the Oklahoma Arts Council. Morris holds a BFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and studied with Edith Kramer, the founder of the field of art therapy, to get her MA degree from New York University.

Born in 1936, Ralph Steadman began his career as a cartoonist and through the years diversified into many fields of creativity. Artist, writer, sculptor, cartoonist and designer, he has illustrated such classics as Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island and Animal Farm. His books include the studies of Sigmund Freud and Leonardo da Vinci, while with Hunter S. Thompson he collaborated on the birth of GONZO journalism with his classic illustrations for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Born February 5, 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri, William S. Carol Ann Carter’s creative work began in intaglio printmaking and advanced to mixed media painting and fiber construction in 1984. She is currently working in multimedia installation -performance, mixed media, and digital imaging and video. Carter is also interested in collaboration across cultures and disciplines in the arts. Of her work she states: “The objects and spaces I utilize suggest the creative field in which I play my work. It is a field of Art and Design where I practice movement and exchange of elements across boundaries. I am motivated by the dialogues among materials, intelligence or disciplines-by a kind of character conversion where one thing influences or develops by virtue of occupying space with another: red and green pigment meant for a painting, find their way to a chair...or when foot pain assists, over time, in the development of a shoe form. The field for these considerations-for this activity-- is wide open.” Carter has held teaching positions at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN, Penn State University, and the University of Michigan, and joined the faculty of The University of Kansas in 1996.

Born in 1967 in western Pennsylvania, Grossman moved to Kansas City in the late 1980s, and over the last twenty years established herself as a prominent painter and printmaker of eastern Kansasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open prairie spaces and river valleys. In more than twenty solo shows in the Midwest and on either coast, Grossman has evolved a luminous and minimalist plein air style, focusing on the horizon and subtle shifts in light and color, weather and season.

Stein began taking furniture making classes in 1995, 1996, and 1999 at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockland, Maine, where he studied with Peter Korn, James Krenov, John Reed Fox, and Michael Puryear. These teachers and Lawrence furniture builder Will Orvedal have had a strong influence on his work. Stein writes about his work: “In a world driven by instant gratification, honest craft stands out as a counterpoint to the frenzy rampant in our culture. Whether it’s furniture making, painting, jewelry making, or any other tangible craft or art, the process inherently requires patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to demand the best, most consistent effort from the creator. Furniture making demands my best effort, my most skilled and practiced work, and all of my concentration. I can’t rush, work casually, or accept less than my best.”

20 Eliza Bullock L-53 Conduit

Eliza received a BFA from Ohio University in Graphic Design in 1995. In Florence, Italy She studied iand created monotypes. She began to work in the Lawrence Arts Center John Talleur Print Studio, combining printmaking, mixed media and photography. Eliza creates abstract works on paper utilizing techniques of monotype, chine collé, collage, assemblage, drawing, painting, pastels and stitching. Monotype, unlike other printmaking methods, is a process through which only one unique print can be made. Each print is one-of-a-kind. I begin by creating monotype prints and layer into them with additional techniques and materials to complete each piece.

As a child, Jan lived on a farm near a lake in Minnesota. The close association with nature had an enduring influence on her life and art. Gaumnitz prefers to be outside “seeing, experiencing, remembering, collecting and photographing,” than creating a work of art inside her studio. By investigating sources for new or old ideas, challenging new techniques and materials, yet following basic fundamentals of art, she works to present a unique expression in a variety of media. Jim received an MBA in metalsmithing from The University of Kansas in 1972 and opened SILVER WORKS in 1974. SILVER WORKS and More closed its storefront in 2009 but Jim continues to produce jewelry which is represented by Spectator’s at 710 Massachusetts in downtown Lawrence. In November 2013, Jim’s work became available in Los Angeles through OULi a beautiful gallery at 1505-1/2 Echo Park Avenue. Brooke Intrachat (LHS graduate) is one of three partners involved in the establishment of the gallery. Hong was born in 1971 during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. She received her BFA from Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and her MFA at the University of California, Davis. Her graduate and post-graduate work was recognized with a Skowhegan Artist Residency Scholarship (2003), a Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship (2004), and Pollock Krasner Foundation grant (2006). Her work is in a number of public and private collections such as Sylvain Levy/ DSL Collection (France 2011), the Origo Family Foundation (Switzerland 2009), the White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection (Australia 2008), the Kansas City Collection (2010), Spencer Museum of Art at University of Kansas (2006), Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University (2010), and The Ministry of Culture of China (Beijing 1994). Herb Friedson was born in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1958 with a BFA in Sculpture. He started enameling in high school. At the Cleveland Institute of Art, he studied with renowned enamellists Kenneth Bate and John Paul Miller. He received an MFA in Design at the University of Kansas and was hired by KU to teach jewelry-silversmithing and basic design in the Design Department as well as introducing enameling into the curriculum. Mr. Friedsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work has been shown in more than one hundred twenty regional, national and international exhibitions including those at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York; Cleveland Museum of Art, Aaron Faber Gallery, New York; Long Beach Museum of Art, Nelson Gallery/Atkins Museum and the Biennale Internationale in Limoge, France.

William S. Burroughs made his home in Lawrence, Kansas, where he lived and created art from 1981 until his death in 1997. During that time, Burroughs continued his explorations in material and process, and created a large body of work. Judith G. Levy is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores history, culture, and identity. A native New Yorker who has lived in the midwest for the past fifteen years, Levy received her BA in Visual Art from Hunter College and her MSW from Adelphi University. Shepard Fairey shot to national fame as the graphic artist behind a 2008 iconic poster of Barack Obama, a portrait labeled simply “HOPE” and in a style that could be described as Andy Warhol meets Socialist Realism. Fairey, who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992, was already well known among graffiti artists and fans, thanks to one of Fairey’s early works of “guerilla” art, an impromptu stencil design based on an ad for Andre the Giant, a professional wrestler. Fairey made stickers of the image in the late ‘80s, along with the scrawl “Andre the Giant has a posse,” and the image went viral, spreading far and wide through urban America, on street signs, billboards and walls. He later adapted the image and added the word “obey.” Mixing left-wing politics with “appropriated” images and bold graphic design, Fairey now works as a fine artist and advertising designer, with a gallery in Los Angeles and business ventures that dip into publishing, fashion and urban sports (skateboarding). Live Auction ORDER porters call what he does appropriation art, but detractors call it plagiarism, and Fairey’s success has put him in the middle of a legal and artistic debate about who owns what when it comes to images in the public. With permission from the staff of Obama’s presidential campaign, Fairey began distributing the “HOPE” image in January of 2008. A year later, with Obama in the White House, Fairey’s poster was officially displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Around the same time the Associated Press declared Shepard’s poster was based on a 2006 photo taken by the AP’s Manny Garcia and they should get credit and compensation. Fairey filed a pre-emptive lawsuit against the AP, arguing he didn’t owe them. Fairey has appeared in the documentary films Andre the Giant Has a Posse (by Helen Stickler, first distributed in 1997) and Bomb It! (2007), and his work has been documented in the book Supply and Demand. Simon has created many iconic photographs that have defined the subject and are part of modern popular culture. Short Term Invitational Residencies These residencies include visual and performing artists who are commissioned to create new work for the Lawrence Arts Center.

Year Long Residencies in Ceramics and Printmaking The Lawrence Arts Center offers 12 month artist in residence programs to ceramics and printmaking artists. Each year, applicants with M.F.A. degrees apply for the two positions. The residents, chosen by Arts Center staff, other artists, and curators, receive living space, a monthly stipend, curatorial and technical support, instruction in teaching workshops and classes, and a solo exhibition of new work created at the Arts Center. Erok Johanssen is a Mixed Media artist working out of SeedCo Studios in Lawrence, KS. Coming from a background in graffiti and street art, Erok has recently been working on mixing the energy and color of the aerosol street culture with the more precise and distinct imagery produced from his photography. The goal of the work is to blur the line where the two mediums intersect. The photograph lends structure to the looseness and abstractness of the spray paint. The spray paint brings more life and dimension to the stillness of the photograph. Together, the two mediums combine to challenge the viewer to decipher what is painted by the hand of the artist, what is digitally produced by the shutter of his camera, and how the two mediums have united to form a unique viewing experience for the audience.

Sarita Mahinay is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute (2011) with a BFA in Ceramics and Creative Writing. While in undergraduate study, Mahinay maintained a keen interest in printmaking and writing alongside her study in the ceramic department. These two disciplines have become an integral part of her practice: Woodblock relief prints, and other printing techniques, are transposed from paper to clay; study of conversation and how we speak in daily context spurs much of the conceptual base of her work. Maintaining a diverse education, she also took a semester in the painting department at KCAI (major-plus program); interned with Ceramic Artist Meredith Host in a studio-based business; and participated in a study abroad program in Paris, France. Mahinay now teaches and works at the Lawrence Arts Center. She specializes in cups, displaying editions of Alchemy Cups at Alchemy Coffee Shop in Lawrence, KS, and shows her Surface Study cups at Red Star Studios in Kansas City, MO. Mahinay co-publishes a tiny booklet called Leaflet Zine and hand-binds limited editions. Her work has been selected as a permanent addition to the Ken Ferguson Teaching Collection, and was displayed in a group show in Craft In America, Object Lessons (2009).

I have been painting on and off for thirty-five years. I hadn’t painted for ten to fifteen years when my sister, who was my best friend, died six years ago. She was so central to my life for so long that for the first two years I literally did not know what to do, how to structure my life. I was in shock to such an extent that I lost 85 pounds in one year and barely spoke. Even though it was very painful to start painting again during such a difficult time, I began painting steadily for the first time in twenty years. At first I worked with oil paints, creating large, brightly colored abstract works. But soon I started burning raw canvas and at first I was terrified of the fire. But very quickly I embraced its restorative properties. I loved the idea of nearly destroying something and, through creativity, resurrecting it. My current body of work is inspired by the burned canvas.

Bill writes, “Influences on my art include Zen, surrealism, and cartooning. I have been doing pen and ink drawings for many years. Since 2001, I have been exploring the remarkable, relatively new photographic process called “scanography” (i.e., photography in which images are captured using a flatbed scanner instead of a lens-based camera). I arrange everyday objects on the scanner, scan them, and sometimes crop the resulting scan to create the final image. The combination of lighting, depth of field, color, and texture – all in a very high resolution image – offered by scanography creates never-ending new photographic possibilities. For example, “Pastel on Pastel” is a scanograph of a pastel drawing I made, along with the pastel sticks used to make the drawing.”

Tom Bartel grew up on the Erie shores of Cleveland, Ohio and is known for his disturbing and humorous fragmented figures that take cues from a “shotgun blast” of influences ranging from antiquity to popular culture. He received his BFA from Kent State University and his MFA from Indiana University-Bloomington. Tom has lectured, conducted workshops and exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His work is included in numerous public and private collections and he has received Individual Artist Fellowships from the Pennsylvania arts council, the Kentucky Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council. He has numerous publications to his credit, including American Craft, Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, Ceramics Art and Perception as well as many other periodicals and books. Bartel is currently an Associate Professor and Ceramics Chairperson at Ohio University in Athens, Oh.

Yoonmi Nam was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, spending part of her youth in Canada. She received a B.F.A. degree in Printmaking from Hongik University in Seoul, Korea. She moved to America to study at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she received a M.F.A. degree in Painting and Printmaking in 2000. Her work considers the cross-cultural experience and sense of transience through prints, installations and drawings. Her recent research interests include the study of traditional ink paintings and woodblock prints from East Asia, including those from Japan, Korea, China, and Tibet. Currently, she is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair of the Visual Art Department at the University of Kansas.

Heather Smith Jones is an artist working in painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. She is the author of Water Paper Paint, Exploring Creativity with Watercolor and Mixed Media, published in 2011. Smith Jonesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work is represented by galleries in the Midwest and on the East coast, is part of the Sprint Corporation and Emprise Financial Corporation public collections, and many private collections around the world. Ken Grizzell was born in Great Bend, Kansas, and raised in Claflin, Kansas. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fort Hays State University and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Wichita State University. After teaching at Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska for five years, Ken began his career as a university professor, first at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, then at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, before finally joining the art faculty at the University of South Dakota in 1976. Grizzell began exhibiting in 1958 by winning a purchase award at the Isaac Delgado Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana. Grizzell retired from the University of South Dakota as a full professor in 1999, and was appointed Emeritus Faculty of Art. He and his wife Suzanne reside in Lawrence, Kansas where Ken produces screenprints in his home studio.

Marshall Maude is a ceramic artist and Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the University of Kansas. Marshall received his MFA in 2003 from the University of Kansas. He opened Studio 59, a ceramics studio and gallery in 2004, producing and marketing functional and sculptural ceramic work. Marshall has designed, built and fired wood kilns across the United States. This is a photo I took at sunrise a little over a mile north of Camden ME on Penobscot Bay. In the foreground is a tidal pool that forms during low tide and beyond that is Penobscot Bay. I had the good fortune of spending time in a cottage owned by a local artist that is 30 or so yards from the spot where I took this. This was one of the beautiful sights I enjoyed with my morning coffee while staying there.

Jon met William Burroughs in 1987 and often photographed his art for galleries and catalogs. In the next 10 years, Jon created a volume of portraits and photographs of him during recording sessions, lectures, and shooting outings. Jon produced a portfolio of 16 original prints, “William S. Burroughs in Prints,” in 2004. Michaela Carmen is a self-taught painter and sculptor. Born in Ashland, OR she moved to Kansas during her elementary years. She began her own mural painting business when she was 19, became a published illustrator for medical journals and art magazines. Later, in 2007 co-founded the Upstage Gallery in the historic Jayhawk Theatre. Wanting to have a broader scope of artistic experience, she moved to Chicago to study at The School of The Art Institute. She studied there for two years before returning under the big sky of Kansas. Brian J. Horsch has been creating hand built and thrown ceramic sculpture since 2008. He tends to focus on human and animal forms both real and unreal. He has a special affinity for farmers, ranchers, and indigenous Kansas critters. Many of his pieces are functional with human or animal accents. Prior to his interest in clay, he was carving sculpture from various hard woods. His ceramic pieces are variously fired by electric, gas, or wood at temperatures between 1900 and 2400 degrees F. His studio is in Lawrence, Kansas and he lives close to nature near Stull, Kansas.

Jeromy Morris was born in Denver, CO and now lives and produces in Lawrence, KS. Morris has a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications and Graphic Design from the University of Kansas. He is a founding member of Fresh Produce Art Collective and Lost Art Sp_ce in downtown Lawrence. Currently Morris is one of 12 resident artists at SeedCo Studios, in the new Warehouse Arts District at 826 Pennsylvania. Morris is constantly finding new techniques to express his creativity through multiple mediums. He fuses photography, fine art and graphic design to “build moods” using, acrylic, toner transfers and spray paint on wood panel. Jessica Rold is a visual artist originally from Chicago Illinois, currently living in Lawrence Kansas and working out of SeedCo studios. She obtained her BFA in oil painting at the American Academy of Art in Chicago where she was awarded Best in Show in 2008. Her current series reveals her artistic process by gradually transitioning an under drawing into fully rendered object. This transparency brings a human aspect to her work, ultimately separating her traditional painting methods from modern printing methods. Free State Brewing Company recently featured Jessica’s artwork on their limited edition Burroughser Weise glassware. More of her work can be seen at her upcoming solo show from April through May 2014 at Wheatfields Bakery, and at SeedCo Studios during Final Fridays.

Born and raised in Prairie Village, KS, Nick attended Rockhurst High School, then Kansas State University and Avila University where he received his Bachelors in Nursing in 1995. Moving to Lawrence, KS in 1996, he and his wife Cindy bought a 19th century craftsman home in Old West Lawrence where a rustic, folk art environment has been created with many kinetic and interactive sculptures on display. The home art environment was featured on HGTV’s “Home Strange Home” in December of 2012. With help from his son Cooper, and daughter Goldie, the regional salvage and scrap metal yards are frequented often, along with local alleys, nature trails, river banks, and other locales, to find unique natural, discarded, and reusable materials to create one-of-a-kind indoor and outdoor sculptures. Jessica Conner is the daughter of a western Kansas farming family. Having dirt, rocks and mud as her main forms of entertainment during her childhood, naturally she was drawn to the ceramic arts. Ms. Conner received her BA from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas as well as the love of her life, Joshua Conner. Her MFA was earned at Fort Hays State University and followed by a yearlong residency at the Lawrence Arts Center. The Lawrence Arts Center still holds Ms. Conner’s heart as she spent five years managing the visual arts studios before being called to become a K-12 visual arts educator. Ms. Conner returns this summer to the Lawrence Arts Center to teach classes to the Lawrence community. She is currently student teaching at Lawrence High School and is thoroughly pleased with her decision to serve the community as an arts educator.

She began serious study of ceramics during her graduate program and worked as a potter for many years, teaching at the Lawrence Art Center when it first opened and in the art department at Baker University. Dan graduated with his MFA degree from Cranbrook in 1970. He began his college level teaching at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE). Located 20 miles from St. Louis, Missouri. Thirty-two years later, in 2002, he retired from university life. Over these . decades, Dan positioned SIUE as one of the top 10 graduate ceramic programs in the country (US News & World Report). A frequent workshop presenter, Anderson has lectured and demonstrated at over 160 venues over the past four decades, including the Archie Bray Foundation, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School, Anderson Ranch, Peters Valley Craft Center, Watershed and Arrowmont School. A multiple grant/award recipient, he has received a NEA Artist Fellowship, twelve Illinois Arts Council grants (including six Artist Fellowships) and a Ford Foundation Grant. Major galleries represent Dan across the United States and his work is in numerous private and permanent collections. His “mounds’ anagama wood kiln is fired at his rural Edwardsville studio, Old Poag Road Clay & Glass, twice a year. He has been wood firing for over thirty years. Dan is married to Caroline Bottom Anderson, a glass/metal artist.

I constantly try to valorize devalued women’s labor and the women’s body by reversing the negative insinuations associated with female domains and imbuing them with positive qualities. For that purpose, I often utilize needle, thread, and fabric in order to call into question the deep-seated bias that women’s work are trivial, menial, marginal and undesirable. By incorporating wool, fiber, and string into the sculptural production, I convert the conventional “feminine” activity of needle works into a useful medium for the making of art. Through the strategic use of media that have been traditionally associated with the feminine, I want to show that seemingly ‘menial female work’ can be a source of pleasure and power for women. I attempt to carve out what I proudly call feminine territory in which the voices of effaced and silenced women reverberate, and to translate the experiences of women in a way that people of different ethnic backgrounds and cultural experiences can understand and sympathize. www.shinheechin.com

John Ferry is an assistant professor at Kansas City Art Institute. Ferry’s work focuses on aged and damaged cityscapes to reveal the aesthetic beauty of the overlooked and forgotten urban environment and brilliantly portray the cycle of change in our cities. By shifting his visual point of view of the same subject and using the changes in light, space, plane and color, Ferry creates the visual equivalent of movement through time.
