Dear Friends, AS I WRITE THIS LETTER, WE ARE ABOUT TO OPEN THE FIRST ANNUAL FREE STATE FESTIVAL, five days of live music, after-dark projected art, ideas, and films in the Lawrence Cultural District. This Festival, under the direction of Ben Ahlvers, with curatorial advice from Luke DuBois, and with films, music, guests and film-related panels curated by Marlo Angell, is a collaboration of the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Lawrence, private foundations and businesses, and many individuals. Artists from around the country and from right in our neighborhood are taking part in this celebration of our distinctive and diverse community. St. Luke AME, Haskell Indian Nations University, the University of Kansas, Van Go, Cultural District developers, the World Company, and Downtown Lawrence are all part of the mix. The NEA Our Town grant that provided the first support for the FSF also funds related digital media and film education for students in Boys and Girls Club and Van Go, and their work will be part of the Festival. The FSF amplifies our daily commitment to exhibitions, performance, and education as well as our support of artists in all mediums who wish to create new work, and sometimes take it from studios and galleries into the streets where it becomes a part of all of our lives. We believe in the work of creative placemaking, that is, the philosophy that arts and culture in all their forms are for all, defined by all, belong outside of the usual spaces, and that arts and culture illuminate distinctive elements of a place. Our “tagline” is Lawrence Arts Center: Find Yourself Inside. I love it, and the invitation always stands, but I think our project is increasingly for us to find ourselves, our artists, students, partners outside. Music, films, annex artists studios, working in diverse public spaces, joining with Van Go, rural Kansas, St. Luke, Centro Hispano, our schools, and listening to how we can facilitate community-driven art. The Free State Festival will grow as a community project in subsequent years, and our new ArtPlace grant will provide opportunity for community discussions about art in public spaces and the ways art can encourage conversation about history, our natural world, neighborhoods, politics, and all that makes us human. Do “Find Yourself Inside” the Arts Center this fall for the best in visual and performing arts education for all ages and experience levels. Take classes! Perform! Listen to artists talk about their work! Join discussions about art! Come to live performances! Seven visual arts studios, two dance studios, two theaters, exhibition spaces everywhere, a preschool wing (with new outdoor space and extended hours!) are here for you.

Introducing Sarah Bishop SARAH BISHOP is the Director of Grants and Special Projects at the Lawrence Arts Center. Sarah has worked as the freelance grant writer for the Lawrence Arts Center since 2012, helping to successfully obtain grant funding from the ArtPlace America Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts. Prior to assuming her full-time position at the Lawrence Arts Center, Sarah worked as the grant professional at Johnson County Community College and as a grant development research assistant at the Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas, bringing extensive grant research experience and success. Sarah has her B.A. in English literature, graduating with honors, magna cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University, and her Ph.D. in 20th Century American Literature and Film from the University of Virginia.

who introducing the 2014-2015 Artists in Residence THE 2014-2015 ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE work at the Arts Center and teach in our studios all year. They infuse the cultural scene with a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and skills, bringing new ideas and different perspectives to Lawrence. We are delighted to announce that after an internationally competitive process, we will welcome three artists who will be in residence in the community. Ceramist Gunyoung Kim, printmaker Tonja Torgerson, and printmaker and multi-media artist Valerie Campos will join us to teach, work on their own, collaborate in our studios and outside the Arts Center, as well as take part in community-driven projects. GUNYOUNG KIM has her MFA in Ceramics from Ohio State University and her BFS Ceramics from Kook Min University in Seoul, Korea. She won the 2014 NCECA Graduate Award for Excellence.

DINNER UNDER THE STARS, the downtown rooftop edition, French bohemian style. On September 13th, culinary distinction meets French bohemian style under the extraordinary downtown sky. The Lawrence Arts Center Dinner Under the Stars benefits the education scholarship fund, supporting arts education for all children. Great company and excellent food are a don’t-miss experience, with education as the raison d’être. $250 per person. TONJA TORGERSON has her MFA in Printmaking from Syracuse University, and BFA in Studio Arts, minor in Art History, from the University of Minnesota. Both Gunyoung and Tonja are recipients of many honors; they have experience teaching at all levels as well as extensive exhibitions and publications records. VALERIE CAMPOS, from Mexico City, will join us in March following a year long residency project under her direction in Beijing. “NaoNow” is a collaboration bringing artists from Mexico together with artists in China, and Valerie’s arrival in Kansas is the next step in a three community/country collaboration. www.naonow.com Gunyoung, Tonja, and Valerie will join artists in our community a year of exhibitions, performance, education and creative placemaking. EVERY TWO YEARS, the Lawrence Arts Center’s hosts 6 nationally recognized ceramicists in a symposium on topics central to the contemporary ceramics art world. Art Place 2014/15 Lawrence Arts Center is honored to announce that “Free State Boulevard: From the Studio to the Streets” is among 55 grants given by ArtPlace America (ArtPlace) in 2014, to support creative placemaking across the country. The $500,000 grant will support a project that will engage artists with urban designers and civil engineers to reimagine and transform the six-block stretch of 9th Street that connects the Warehouse Arts area with Downtown Lawrence. Free State Boulevard will become a streetscape that reinvents the downtown section of 9th Street as a platform for visual and performance art.

The arts are central to encouraging creative thinking, decision-making, imagination, and cultural awareness in this caring, thoughtful early educational environment. Employing arts-based activities to learn reading, writing, science and math, this award-winning program provides social, motor, and creative experiences integrated into a sound preschool curriculum. In addition to the daily creative classroom, children work with a music, drama or creative movement specialist each week, and meet visiting artists from around the world. Drum Roll! Kindergarten is a transitional learning stage where early learners bridge from preschool to “big kid” environments. Liza MacKinnon Both the left and right sides of the brain are engaged as the class progresses from simple to increasingly complex multi-signature book forms. Every two years, the Lawrence Arts Center hosts 6 nationally recognized ceramicists in a symposium on topics central to the contemporary ceramics art world. This rare opportunity offers a chance to interact and observe ceramic artists working in the top of the field. Over the course of two days, this select group of artists are active in studios at the Lawrence Arts Center demonstrating sculpting processes, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing, representing a diverse range of techniques and approaches to ceramic art. The six artists are paired up in three studios at the Arts Center, to demonstrate their techniques and encourage dialogue with the audience. Attendees are encouraged to visit each of the three studios throughout the two day symposium on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 from 9am to 4pm. CLASSICAL BALLET TRAINING All ballet students follow a sequential program for each level which is carefully designed to development awareness, musicality, and coordination as well as flexibility and strength. Upon entrance, students are “placed” into the appropriate level by the instructor. Students should expect to spend a minimum of two years at each level or until he/ she has accomplish the specific level’s objectives. Vivify Dance is a pre-professional, youth ensemble in residency at the Lawrence Arts Center. Founded and artistically directed by the Dance Program Director, Hanan Misko, this ensemble is a collective of aspiring students. A creative playground, the ensemble collabo rates with various dance genres and concepts to produce its work. Born in Havana, Cuba, she came to the U.S. as a refugee in <carmenhighres04.jpg>1964. She grew up in Decatur, Georgia, where she lives today. Deedy began writing as a young mother and storyteller whose NPR commentaries on All Things Considered were collected and released under the title, Growing Up Cuban In Decatur, Georgia. The pithy collection of twelve stories soon garnered awards, among them a 1995 Publishers Weekly Best Audio (Adult Storytelling) and a 1996 Parents’ Choice Gold Award. Her children’s books have won numerous awards. Carmen will also perform a short story during the regularly scheduled Friday, November 14 Story Slam and will appear at the Lawrence Public Library earlier in the day on Saturday, November 15. community supported art ArtShares, Lawrence Artwork Pick-up Party December 4, 2014 | 5:30 to 7pm ArtShares is an art subscription service for locally produced art. Much like Community Supported Agriculture, in which shareholders invest in a local farm and receive a monthly payout of fruits and vegetables, ArtShares asks shareholders to invest in original art. The program, like many others around the world, offers a reasonably priced way to support artists and receive limited edition contemporary art. Thirty “shares” will be made available for purchase by local art collectors and patrons – each share will include three limited edition works of art from the four artists and two tickets to a performances at the Lawrence Arts Center. The “shares” will be delivered to “investors” at an exclusive event/art party that will provide further opportunities for artists and patrons to connect. December artists:

When you sign up for a Community Supported Art share, you will receive 3 limited edition works of art from three of the four participating artists and 2 tickets to a show at the Lawrence Arts Center plus an invitation to the private pick-up event/art party where you’ll have the opportunity to meet the artists and other shareholders while collecting your freshly created artwork. All art is limited edition for CSA 2014 only. Hosted in the main gallery and lobby at the Lawrence Arts Center, this exclusive event will feature music, drinks, and food.
