Silent Auction Instructions Over 100 items in this auction are offered through the Silent Auction. Silent Auction items are displayed with a Silent Auction bid card (“S”) in addition to the identification label. To place a bid, print your name clearly on the card. (There is a minimum 50% bid on all auction items.) Please honor the minimum bid increase of $10. Failure to do so will disqualify your bid. Include your phone number so that we can contact you if you are not present to pick up your work at the end of the auction. Bids made without full names and phone numbers may be disqualified. Bids may be placed until 7:15pm in the middle gallery and 7:30pm in the large gallery on auction night, April 11, just before the Live Auction begins. The names of winners of Silent Auction items will be posted during the Live Auction on April 11. You may claim your Silent Auction item starting at 9pm in the Black Box Theater (entrance is located in the lower lobby). On Monday, April 13, telephone calls to winners who were not present on auction night will be made to inform them of their winning bid and to arrange for the pick-up of the item. We ask that winning bidders claim their items as soon as possible. BUY OUT OPTION Silent Auction items are available for “buy-out” at 200% of the posted retail value. Artwork on stage is by Neil Goss and was created as part of the stage set for the Lawrence Arts Center’s production of “Peter and the Wolf.” Neil Goss lives in Lawrence, KS where he concentrates his work around natural Earth processes while responding to human impacts upon those processes. In 2012 he received two BFAs in Design with concentrations in Textiles and Ceramics from the University of Kansas School of the Arts. Goss has created numerous public art installations and has been in multiple group shows and solo shows such as “Reflexivity” and “Sacred Spaces.” He is the recipient of many scholarships, grants and awards including the Doris Carey Scholarship, TSA workshop scholarship, Hollander Family Fund Scholarship, KU SOTA research travel funds, and the KU Exiting Award Scholarship. He recently funded a Kickstarter to attend a residency in Brooklyn, NY. He currently is a practicing professional artist and teaches pottery and natural dyeing at the Lawrence Arts Center. Live Auction ORDER L-o Lisa Grossman Lawrence, KS

Born in 1967 in western Pennsylvania, Grossman moved to Kansas City in the late 1980’s, and over the last twenty years established herself as a prominent painter and printmaker of eastern Kansas’s open prairie spaces and river valleys. In more than twenty solo shows in the Midwest and on either coast, Grossman has evolved a luminous and minimalist plein air style, focusing on the horizon and subtle shifts in light and color, weather and season. Based in Lawrence, Kansas since 1996, Grossman’s work is included in numerous public, private, corporate, and museum collections including the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas; the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas; and the Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University. Grossman has completed several significant commissions including large canvases for the Chiefs Art Program at Arrowhead stadium and the H & R Block Center, both in Kansas City. She was a 2009 recipient of the Kansas Arts Commission’s Mid-Career Fellowship. Grossman earned degrees from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of Kansas, Lawrence. An artist trained in analytical psychology, Margaret Weisbrod Morris’s work is a straightforward blend of metaphor and reality, with a touch of the absurd. Working in a variety of mediums and subjects, her work focuses on visually representing sensory dynamics and visual minutiae to convey the intensity of precise moments in life. Morris is drawn to monotonous, repetitive visual elements, and strange, illogical visual situations, and her her work juxtaposes emptiness with chaos, calm with intensity to create meticulous, dreamlike, or irrational scenes that are based in reality but are slightly implausible. Morris holds a BFA from the University of WisconsinMadison, and an MA from New York University.

Heather Smith Jones is an artist working in painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking, and is the author of Water Paper Paint, Exploring Creativity with Watercolor and Mixed Media. Smith Jones’s work is represented by galleries in the Midwest and on the East coast, and is part of public and private collections around the globe. She earned an MFA from The University of Kansas in 2001, and a BFA in Painting from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 1996. Since 2004, she has been an instructor in the Arts-Based Preschool at the Lawrence Arts Center and has taught all ages of children, college, and adult classes. Julie Green was born in Japan in 1961. A professor at Oregon State University, she lives in the Willamette Valley with her husband Clay Lohmann and their small cat, Mini. Half of each year, usually winter months, is spent on The Last Supper. In summer, Green paints personal narratives. Her egg tempera is included in the 7th edition of A World of Art published by Prentice Hall. Green has had twenty-seven solo exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad, been featured in The New York Times, a Whole Foods mini-documentary, National Public Radio, Ceramics Monthly and Gastronomica, and recently received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Painters and Sculptors. www.greenjulie.com

Texture always plays a large part in my paintings, actual and visual; currently breaking into the picture plane and creating actual 3-D space on canvas. Also simplifying composition to eliminate all that isn’t important to the painting. Simplification makes each mark significant. Paint application is also paramount. I mix different methods of making marks and shapes together to create a visual tension. “Westward” is one of the first paintings of this series.

L-12 Hong Zhang Lawrence, KS

Born and raised in China, Hong grew up in an academic environment. Both her parents are retired art professors and her two sisters are also painters. When she was 15, Hong and her twin-sister Bo won the national competition to attend the high school attached to the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. From there, she began her professional art training. In 1994, Hong received B.F.A. in Chinese Ink Painting from Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, M.A. from CSU Sacramento in 2002 and M.F.A. from University of California, Davis in 2004. Hong currently resides in Lawrence, Kansas with her husband and daughter. For 10 years, Hong has studied under both Chinese and American fine arts educational systems, and she has discovered a balance between the two cultures and artistic styles. In China, she developed a solid foundation in painting, but the content was restricted. In 1996, Hong came to America to expand her education in fine arts. The graduate school in the US has provided Hong with the freedom to develop new concepts for her work. This unique experience has been recognized with a Skowhegan Artist Residency Full Scholarship (2003), a Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship (2004) and Pollock Krasner Foundation grant (2006). Hong has exhibited her work nationally and internationally at different venues such as the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in DC, Asia Society Texas Center in Houston, Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, The White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, Australia, The Museum of Contemporary Art Norway in Oslo, The 3rd Chengdu Biennale and The 9th Shanghai Biennale in China, Ink Studio in Beijing, Galerie Steph in Singapore, The Portland Museum of Art in Maine, The Center for Contemporary Art Sacramento, San Francisco Chinese Culture Center, Lawrence Arts Center, whitespace in Atlanta, BRIC Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, The Chinese Porcelain Company in NYC and at University galleries. Her work is selected in many public and private collections such as Sylvain Levy/ DSL Collection (Paris), The White Rabbit Collection of Contemporary Chinese Art ( Sydney), The Ministry of Culture of China ( Beijing), The Origo Family Collection of Chinese Ink Paintings ( Zurich), Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, Ulrich Art Musuem at Wichita State University and The Kansas City Collection. Angie Pickman, Lawrence, KS, is a nationally recognized cut paper artist that combines the art of traditional paper cutting with collage to create intricately detailed works of art and animations. She received her master’s degree in 2004 from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, which is where she first learned of the art of silhouette animation artist Lotte Reiniger (1899 – 1981). Her love of nature and the tranquility of the rural terrain, as well as Reiniger’s style and technique, inspired Pickman to set off on the artistic path that she continues today. The ocean jasper used in this pendant is from one of Jim’s earliest gemstone dealers. Jim met Gene Mueller in the mid 70’s at a gem show in Kansas City & a relationship was formed for Gene had graduated from Ottawa University. Gene’s lapidary business is located in Cedarburg, Wisconsin where he collects jasper & agate from around the world. Many of his stones are like contemporary paintings making them a challenge to design around. Gesine Janzen was born in Newton, Kansas in 1967. She studied art at Bethel College, Newton, KS; The University of Kansas; Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy; and earned her M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. Her work has been exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, including a recent show at the International Print Center New York. Her prints are included in public and corporate collections such as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Hallmark collection, Sprint, and the Beach Museum of Art in Manhattan, Kansas. She was also named Gift Print Artist for 2003 by the Beach Museum. Janzen has taught at the Kansas City Art Institute, the University of Missouri in Kansas City, and is currently working as Assistant Professor of Art and Head of Printmaking at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. Janzen’s recent woodcuts include images of hand-built constructions intended for children’s play, wooden houses, and farm buildings based on the structures from around her family home. He is in the permanent collections of over 85 museums,and his personal letters are being collected by the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Morris is constantly finding new techniques to express his creativity through multiple mediums. He fuses together photography, fine art and graphic design to “build moods” using mixed techniques. Inspired by chaos and the mundane, he seeks out subtleties and embraces the accidental. Morris’ process oriented work deals with, interactions and happenings relating to, consumerism and advertising, urban ruins and type decay, nature vs. industry and the equilibrium and fusion thereof. Laura Ramberg is a longtime local artist and teacher. Her work as a commissioned sculptor can be found in many homes , businesses, churches, and schools throughout the region. She worked as a stone carver on the restoration of the Douglas County Courthouse as well as the state capital building in Topeka. She has been the art teacher at Douglas County Youth Services for the past seventeen years. Laura enjoys creating hand built ceramic sculpture and carving native limestone. Gerit Grimm was born and grew up in Halle, German Democratic Republic. In 1995, she finished her apprenticeship, learning the traditional German trade as a potter at the “Altbürgeler blau-weiss GmbH” in Bürgel, Germany and began work as a Journeyman for Joachim Jung in Glashagen, Germany. She earned an Art and Design Diploma in 2001 studying ceramics at Burg Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany. In 2002, she was awarded the German DAADGovernment Grant from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, where she graduated with an MA in 2002. She received her MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2004. She has taught at CSULB, Pitzer College, Doane College and MSU Bozeman and has worked at major residencies like Mc Coll Center, Bemis Center, Kohler Arts & Industry Program, and the Archie Bray Foundation. Sally Frerichs Piller was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1955. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking at the University of Kansas in 1977. Making woodblock prints has been the primary focus of her art making in her adult life, though she also works in other printmaking techniques such as intaglio, lithography, monotype, letterpress, as well as in many other media, including painting in oil and gouache, ceramics, assemblage, wood carving, papermaking, and the most important in her opinion, drawing. One of her large color woodblock prints was acquired by The Spencer Art Museum, where it was included in an exhibit entitled, “Inspired by Japan,” 2003, which featured 19th and 20th century western art as well as Edo period Japanese masterpieces, and in “Windmills to Workshops, Lawrence and the Visual Arts” in 2004. In 2007 to 2009, Sally was the owner, director and curator of 6 Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas. The gallery featured group shows with topical themes. Sally has been working in mokuhanga, Japanese woodblock printing, since 2005 and in Oct.-Nov. 2013 she won a five week residency at Mokuhanga Innovations Laboratory in Kawaguchiko Japan. The Lawrence Arts Center’s Visiting and Resident Artist program is vital to our ability to offer the best in arts education, performing arts, and contemporary exhibitions. These artists work with preschoolers through adults, teach in our studios and in the community, exhibit, create new work in dance, theater, or visual arts, challenge us, and inspire us.

Project-based Residencies This residency supports area artists who wish to learn new mediums and/ or who need temporary studio space to complete special projects. Artists receive use of studio space at the Arts Center, a materials stipend, and private instruction in any medium.

Short Term Invitational Residencies These residencies include visual and performing artists who are commissioned to create new work for the Lawrence Arts Center.

Year Long Residencies in Ceramics and Printmaking The Lawrence Arts Center offers 12 month artist in residence programs to ceramics and printmaking artists. Each year, applicants with M.F.A. degrees apply for the two positions. The residents, chosen by Arts Center staff, other artists, and curators, receive living space, a monthly stipend, curatorial and technical support, instruction in teaching workshops and classes, and a solo exhibition of new work created at the Arts Center. They teach classes and care for studio spaces. Our 2013-14 artists-in residence are John McCaughey, printmaking. Kyla Strid, ceramics.

Working by commission and freelance, he produced a variety of materials including posters, apparel, and band merchandise. His work was displayed in several local shows including the Winter Comission, Bellingham Electronic Ar ts Festival, and in various collective shows in Minneapolis and Chicago. After several years of itinerant ar tistr y, he went to the University of Por tland to attain a MA with a focus in Ar t Education in 2007. I pick up the paper after applying the ink and rubbing alcohol, and it will roll around on the paper until I get the desired sky or landscape. I use of the alcohol to make flowers, etc. This has been done with no brushes. The ink has a mind of its own most of the time, and pieces never turn out exactly as I planned.

FEATURED ARTIST Clare Doveton draws inspiration from the natural world by simply being a quiet witness to the circle of life in rural Kansas. She describes painting as the process of translating the silent dialogue she has with the world onto the canvas. Doveton seeks to conjure both the heavenly and darker qualities of the ever yday experience, and she views these as equals in her work (and in life). Clare Dovetonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work will be featured in her solo show of new works preceding the 2015 Benefit Ar t Auction. A Kansas native, Clare Doveton moved to New York City in 1994 where she received her BFA in painting from Parsons School of Ar t and Design. She began exhibiting her work in San Francisco and New York. In 2005, she moved her studio back to Kansas, where she currently works in Lawrence. She has been selected as the featured ar tist for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auction. ARTIST STATEMENT My focus in painting has always revolved around light. My painting humbly attempts to reflect the light that pours out of ever ything when we bear true witness to our surroundings. In these works, layers of thinned pigment create an ethereal dialogue between ear th and sky. Integrated into this are subtle lines drawn in with various tools, often representing a human hand on the land. Changing seasons mean changes in color; summer casts a deep orange heat, while the winter skies pale to white. Painting documents the sacred light of each day passing, and ser ves as a true memor y of Home.
