ANNUAL REPORT
FROM THE 2016/17 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR Dear Lawrence Arts Center Members: 2016-2017 was a year of transition for the Lawrence Arts Center. Thank you for your continuing support as donors, sponsors, students, and audiences. We saw increases in all aspects of the programming and participation. The numbers speak for themselves. Let me share some with you. • This year saw our most successful benefit art auction ever, raising almost $30,000 more for the exhibitions program than we did in FY 2016; • The Performing Arts program provided 88 performances to almost 13,000 audience members, and raised $30,000 to support its programs through a brand new performing arts fundraiser, Picnic on the Prairie; • We had an additional 478 enrollments in FY 2017 over FY 2016, resulting from a 41% increase in dance enrollments, a 29% increase in K-12 enrollments, and a 9% increase in early childhood education enrollments; • We distributed $152,000 in arts education financial aid distributed to Lawrence families in need; • Out of 342 applicants, our ArtSpace program was named 1 of only 50 finalists in the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards given out by the White House in partnership with the NEA and the NEH—we are the only finalist from the state of Kansas; • The Arts Center spent approximately $1,325,000 on support for artists, an estimated 80% of whom were from Douglas County; and • The Arts Center’s annual Free State Festival returned to its filmcentric roots, with a social justice-themed film fest featuring soldout film screenings, comedy, and concerts. The Lawrence Arts Center thanks Kimberly Williams, who served as the CEO from September through July in leading the organization to achieve these new heights. As a Board, with the staff, we have embarked on a strategic planning process to affirm the vision and values of the Lawrence Arts Center. With input from many of you through survey responses and interviews, we hope to complete the process by the end of December. I also want to thank Cindy Maude for generously serving as the interim CEO until the search for the next CEO is completed early next year. It has been a privilege to work with the incredible staff of talented young people who are the “bones” of the Lawrence Arts Center and the Board of Directors who provide the guidance and leadership of a “jewel” of the Lawrence community. FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTORS Dear Friends, Fiscal year 2016-2017 was a year of transformation for the Lawrence Arts Center as it was for the nation. As a staff, we witnessed changes both internally and externally, reflecting together on the ways in which pressing questions of national identity and belonging were reiterated on the small scale in our own community. As always for us, the arts were a way to think through these questions collaboratively and with much-needed creativity and optimism. From our surprise-hit Hamilton Singalong in September, which showcased the joyful spirit Lawrence youth are reimagining and reinterpreting American history, to November’s “Platform” exhibit and complementary film series, which saw the 2016 presidential election through an artist’s lens, the Arts Center’s programs confronted national politics head on this year. The 940 Live concert “Songs of Hope and Despair” kicked off 2017 by uniting artists and audiences in the wake of the election and captured the tune of the national zeitgeist. Our education programs continued to do the work of creating engaged and visionary public citizens of all ages. The arts-based Linda Reimond Preschool and the new Kelly Galloway Kindergarten got our littlest Lawrencians started on the path to creative life-long learning. Our annual guerilla arts spring break camp brought 1st-5th grade children out into the community to use art as a tool for expressing messages of joy, peace, and other things—e.g., “Love Dinosaurs!” Creative youth development programs HANG12, PLAY12, and stARTup allowed students to publicly share their ideas about race, gender, and social justice through youth-led art shows and performances, and our adult education classes provided a space for creative self-expression, community bonding, and imaginative escape from the daily grind. Through it all, the Arts Center was a space for dreaming big and imagining possibilities. Summer Youth Theatre took risks like She Kills Monsters and had smash hits like The Lion King; exhibitions delighted audiences with Daniel Rozin’s playful “Penguins Mirror,” then reflected on the intersection of race, history, and textile arts in partnership with the inaugural National African-American Quilt Conference; The Nutcracker: A Kansas Ballet had real snow (!) and took to the downtown public ice rink to do pre-show promotions; and for the first time ever a river—our own man-made, miniature version of the Nile—ran through the Arts Center’s lobby and brought an aquatic flair to summer camps like Box City Cairo, Dig It, and River Adventure. It was a year to remember, and it could never have happened without the support of our dedicated community of sponsors, donors, patrons, and friends. Thank you for believing in the power of the arts to shape our communities and our conversations, and thank you for supporting us. Sincerely,
Stacy Galloway Haywood Chief Operating Officer

SCHOOL OF THEATRE & MUSIC
The arts are central in this thoughtful early educational environment that encourages creative thinking, decision-making, imagination, and cultural awareness.
Programs provide 6th – 12th graders the opportunity to immerse themselves in project-based, creative environments where they can develop real-world experience and hands-on job skills in visual arts, theatre, and dance.
KELLY GALLOWAY ARTS-BASED KINDERGARTEN
ADULT ARTS
Watching and participating in theatre fosters literacy, stimulates interest in a wide variety of subjects, introduces diverse cultures and characters, and encourages compassion and tolerance. Our students develop a love for theatre that enriches their development in many ways, offering them a safe place to express themselves, explore issues, take risks and come together with performance artists of all ages and skill levels.
Our kindergarten curriculum focuses on preparing young students to develop innovation skills and sets the stage for a lifetime love of learning.
We’re focused on promoting art in everyday life. From beginners to professional artists, classes, and workshops foster learning, practice, and ingenuity in a diverse range of media and skill levels.
ARTSPACE & STEAM
ARTIST INC.
ArtSpace is the integrated visual art and science program for students in 1st – 5th grades. Acknowledging the vital role art has in teaching innovative and creative thinking, the Art Space program transforms STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) into STEAM (STEM + art).
With a novel class design including artist facilitator mentoring, Artist INC gives artists the practical tools and peer feedback they need to strengthen their art practice, seize opportunities, and shape their creative and financial future.
SCHOOL OF DANCE Our faculty enable students to follow a sequential program and develop skills appropriate for their age and level. The Arts Center offers a wide variety of dance, from classical ballet to hip hop, and modern to cultural for all ages.

ARTSREACH FINANCIAL AID While the need for financial assistance in our community continues to increase, available state and city funding for the arts continues to decrease, making it harder to rely on public contributions to the Arts Center’s financial aid fund. We are committed to continuing to meet the financial need of Lawrence and
Douglas County residents. We provide access to Arts Center theatre, dance, and visual arts programs to anyone who wishes to participate regardless of income-level or ability to pay. We’re also committed to our community partnerships with social service partners, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Lawrence,

The Lawrence Arts Center Legacy Fund, held at the Douglas County Community Foundation, underwrites visual and performing arts programming for children at the Lawrence Arts Center. Established in 2014 with a $100,000 gift from the Ethel and Raymond Rice Foundation and a $100,000 gift from the Marianna and Ross Beach Foundation, the Fund supports financial aid and arts programming at the Arts Center for children in Head Start, CASA, Boys and Girls Club and other social service agencies served by the Arts Center’s ArtsReach program. This fund may also be used to underwrite costs for children’s programming directly related to training and retaining teaching artists for preschool through high school visual and performing arts classes.
