SILENT AUCTION INSTRUCTIONS Over 100 items in this auction are offered through the Silent Auction. Silent Auction items are displayed with a Silent Auction bid card (“S”) in addition to the identification label. To place a bid, print your name clearly on the card. (There is a minimum 50% bid on all auction items.) Please honor the minimum bid increase of $20. Failure to do so will disqualify your bid. Include your phone number so that we can contact you if you are not present to pick up your work at the end of the auction. Bids made without full names and phone numbers may be disqualified. Bids may be placed until 7:15pm in the middle gallery and 7:30pm in the large gallery on auction night, April 23, just before the Live Auction begins. BUY OUT OPTION Silent Auction items are available for “buy-out” at 200% of the posted retail value. Bids of that amount or more are not considered buy-outs unless the item has been paid for in advance. To buy-out an item, see the receptionist in the lobby. Silent and Live auction winners will be notified by text when purchased artwork is ready for pick up in the Black Box Theater on the evening of the live auction. You may claim your auction item starting at 8:30pm in the Black Box Theater (entrance is located in the lower lobby). On Monday, April 25, telephone calls to winners who were not present on auction night will be made to inform them of their winning bid and to arrange for the pick-up of the item. We ask that winning bidders claim their items as soon as possible. All artwork is carefully wrapped for safe transport, and we will be happy to assist you in getting artwork to your car. LIVE AUCTION ORDER L-1 Louie Copt Lawrence, KS

Fires at Sunset Oil on canvas, 16 x 20”, 2014 $1,650.00 Louis Copt began his career as a full time artist in 1985 after returning from a summer of study at the Art Students League in New York City. The focus of Copt’s painting is Kansas in general and specifically the Flint Hills, the annual prairie burning and most recently, nonobjective landscapes and figurative painting and photography. Louis’ primary medium is oil on canvas which provides the depth of color that best translates his particular vision. He also works in a variety of other media including watercolor, pastel and acrylic and teaches classes at the Lawrence Art Center.

L-2 David Vertačnik Lawrence, KS

Path Cast iron, bronze, and assembled found objects, 21 x 12 x 12”, 2016 $1,500.00 David Vertačnik received his MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., in 1975 and his Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana State University in 1972. David taught ceramics at the University of Kansas, 1979 to 2015, when he retired as Associate Professor Emeritus in the department of Visual Art. He has always been attracted to images of plants, agricultural tools, and the fruitful soil, using them to describe and symbolize life cycles, such as fertility, growth, depletion and renewal. His art has been viewed in numerous solo, two-person, and group exhibitions in the United States and Slovenia.

L-3 Lindsay Pichaske Annapolis, MD

Borage Low-fire ceramic, milk paint, gouache, 14 x 6 x 13”, 2015 $1,400.00 Lindsay Pichaske (b. 1981) received her MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder and her BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her work is exhibited throughout the country, including SOFA Chicago, Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis, Foster/White Gallery in Seattle, and Flashpoint Gallery in Washington, DC. Prior to moving to Maryland, she was a long-term resident artist and Taunt Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts (2011-2012). In 2013, Pichaske received an “Emerging Artist” Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. Most recently, she is the recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award. She currently teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and is a Ceramics faculty member and area coordinator at the College of Southern Maryland.

Urban Riverfront Archival pigment ink print, 51 x 30”, 2012 $2,200.00 Janet Satz earned a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MA in Art Education and a Doctor of Arts Fellowship from New York University. Awards and Residencies include a National Endowment for the Arts/Kansas Arts Commission Artist Fellowship and a 2015 Residency at Escape to Create, Seaside, Florida. Public and corporate collections include the Smithsonian Institution, the Housatonic Museum of Art, and the corporate headquarters of Sprint, General Electric, and Mercedes Benz. Her art, fusing representation and abstraction, focuses on the relationship between the urban and natural environment.

L-5 Jen Unekis Lawrence, KS

In the Light Acrylic, graphite, and oil-stick on plaster board, 32 x 32”, 2016 $750.00 Jen Unekis lives in a little yellow bungalow by the river with her husband David and daughter Adeline Grace. She was born in LA but spent her childhood in rural Kansas, Oklahoma, and Idaho. She moved to Lawrence, KS in 1983 to attend KU and is happy to call Lawrence her home. She is currently working in acrylic paints, graphite, and pigments on plaster board. Jen creates layered painted surfaces, removing and adding elements until she has created the piece she is looking for. Pendant Sterling silver, 14K gold, lapis lazuli pendant on 30” chain, textured & high polished/ forged & fabricated, 1 ¾ x 7/8”, 2012 $1,100.00 Lapis lazuli has been appreciated for thousands of years for its deep blue color and is one of Jim’s favorite stones to set. This stone is one he cut and polished himself to get the unusual geometric shape with the flat surface to show off the subtle shades of blue. The textured surface of the sterling silver contrasts with the high polish of the stone and the shape of the 14K gold relates to the shape of the lapis. Toward All That Remains (Artist’s Proof ) Laminated pigment print on PVC panel, 30 x 55”, 2016 $2,450.00 Tim Forcade is a multimedia artist employing painting, theatrical/studio lighting, electronic systems, video and photography to create imagery inspired by light in all its forms. He has combined his education in drawing and painting (BFA 1970) with ongoing research and experiments with technology-based media. His work has been published, collected and exhibited nationally and internationally. His more recent work leverages his decades of experience as an artist and professional photographer skilled in computational photography and digital image processing. L-8 Jeromy Morris Lawrence, KS

Periphery Spray paint, toner, acrylic and epoxy on panel, 24 x 48”, 2016 $1,200.00 Jeromy Morris is constantly finding new techniques to express his creativity through multiple mediums. He fuses together processes to “build moods” using acrylic, toner transfers, and spray paint on wood panel. Inspired by chaos and the mundane, he seeks out subtleties and embraces the accidental. Morris’ work deals with interactions and happenings relating to consumerism and advertising, urban ruins and type decay, nature vs. industry, and the equilibrium and fusion thereof. Morris is a founding member of Fresh Produce Art Collective, Cider Gallery Curator, and Director at SeedCo Studios. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections.

L-9 Angie Pickman Lawrence, KS

Silent Skyline Cut paper and acrylic, 17 x 21”, 2016 $765.00 Angie Pickman is a nationally recognized cut paper artist who combines the art of traditional paper cutting with collage. She received her master’s degree in 2004 from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, which is where she first began experimenting with this art form. She exhibits at galleries and art fairs across the country; does illustration, animation and design work; conducts public presentations on her art; and teaches various art classes and workshops. Her work has been featured in national publications including Midwest Living and Martha Stewart Living magazines, and her animation work will appear in a documentary premiering on PBS this summer.

Imperial Rights Fighter 3D printed resin, 9 x 9 x 9”, 2016 $1,500.00 Born March 2, 1973 in Springfield, Missouri and growing up in neighboring Kansas, Kris spent his youth in rural seclusion and isolation along with a blue-collar working mother, two significantly older brothers, and an absent father. Open country, sparse trees, and alcoholic stepfather, all paved the way for an individual saturated in imagination and introversion. His propensity for the unusual has been a constant since childhood, a lifelong fascination that lent itself to his macabre art later in life. The grotesque to him, as it seemed, was beautiful.

L-11 Rick Mitchell Lawrence, KS

Palm Sign/Sand Bar Archival color photograph, 38 x 35”, 2016 $1,100.00 Rick Mitchell has been a practicing artist since the early 1970s. A former director of the Exhibition Program at the Lawrence Arts Center (1993-2009), he previously was professor of photography at Rutgers University (1974-1992). He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New Jersey Historical Commission, the Kansas Arts Commission, and the Lawrence Arts Commission. He is a recipient of two Phoenix Awards from the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission.

L-12 Karen Kunc Lincoln, NE

Flooding Field, Fountain Burst Color woodcut print, 20 x 30”, 2014 $1,700.00 Karen Kunc explores inventive color abstractions of the natural and human-fashioned world in her prints and artist books, creating ideas of “strange beauty.” Kunc is a Cather Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Awards include Fulbright Scholar Awards to Finland and Bangladesh, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and a Nebraska Arts Council Fellowship. Her works have been shown nationally and internationally and are held in numerous private, public, and university collections. Loaded Ceramic stoneware, 22 x 13 ½ x 14 ½”, 2015 $1,400.00 Jenny Doores grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Sarah Lawrence. She studied ceramics at the Corcoran in D.C. and received a MFA in Ceramics and Sculpture from the Boston Museum School. She and Michael Zanfagna then created a successful ceramics collectibles company for which she was designer, CLAY ART, 1976-2006. Jenny and her husband Fred Doores moved to Lawrence in 2012. Being part of the LAC community has given Jenny the opportunity to teach sculpture, as well as the time, space, and encouragement to finally make art for its own sake—a continual source of joy. Her sculptures usually involve anatomy and a clear-cut message.

L-14 Jack Collins Lawrence, KS

White (End of Summer) Acrylic on wood panel, 33 x 29”, 2015 $2,500.00 Jack earned both a BFA and a MFA from the University of Kansas and taught drawing at the Lawrence Arts Center from 1990 to 1996. He was an instructor of art from 1990 to 1993 at Johnson County Community College and an Assistant Professor of Art at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS from 1992 to 2002. Jack received two grants from the Kansas Arts Commission and a grant for professional growth and enrichment from Baker University. Jack presented solo exhibitions at the Lawrence Arts Center in 2013 and 1991. His work is in the collections of the Spencer Museum of Art and Baker University.

L-15 Rick Stein Lawrence, KS

Wenge and Maple Hall Table Wood, 41 x 12 x 29”, 2012 $1,700.00 After a long career in the retail bicycle business, Rick Stein sold his store in 1994 and has been making furniture ever since. Judith G. Levy is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work is about history, culture, and identity, and she has shown throughout the United States and Canada. She has had solo exhibitions at venues such as The Indianapolis Museum of Art, Soo Visual Arts Center (Mpls), Big Car Gallery (Ind), and the Paragraph Gallery (KC), and she has participated in numerous group shows at venues such as Midway Contemporary Art (Mpls), Plugin Institute of Contemporary Art (Winnipeg), Plains Art Museum (Fargo), la Esquina (KC), Benchspace Gallery (Asheville), and Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester). She has been awarded grants from such institutions as The Andy Warhol Foundation, the Lilly Foundation, and Arts KC.

L-22 William S. Burroughs (1914 – 1997) Green Thoughts in a Green Shade One color serigraph on cotton paper, 14.25 x 19.5”, 1992 $1,500.00 William S. Burroughs was born on February 5, 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri, and became a celebrated American novelist, short story writer, and one of the founding figures of the Beat Movement. Jack Kerouac called him “the greatest satirical writer since Jonathan Swift”; J. G. Ballard said he was “the most important writer to emerge since the Second World War”; and Norman Mailer declared him “the only American writer who may be conceivably possessed by genius.” Burroughs has been cited as a major influence on countercultural figures in music and visual arts, as well as literature, and he developed his own visual arts practice in his later years. Burroughs died in Lawrence, Kansas on August 2nd, 1997.

14-G Bird Covered Jar Earthenware, underglaze, glaze, 9 x 12 x 4”, 2014 $1,800.00 Born in Spokane, Washington in 1940, Patti Warashina earned degrees from the University of Washington (1962, 1964). After teaching for 30 years, she retired as Professor Emerita from UW in 1995. She is a recipient of the following awards: American Craft Council Fellow, Twining Humber Lifetime Achievement Award, University of Washington Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Washington Governor’s Award of Special Commendation for the Arts, and three NEA grants. Her public collections include: Smithsonian Institute; Museum of Art and Design, NYC; LACMA; and the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art.

L-24 Matthew Lord Lawrence, KS

Matthew Lord and is an illustrator and fine artist residing in Lawrence, Kansas. Matthew’s artwork often tilts toward the absurd with a smattering of pop culture critique. He strives to tell a well-constructed story with his art, using the panel as a delivery device. Matthew’s influences are drawn from a curiosity for the natural world, childhood nostalgia, and a love of mythology. In recent years, Matt has adopted a mantra of community building through the arts by serving as Board Chairman for the Lawrence Percolator and hosting a monthly life drawing gathering through the arts collective Thieves Guild. Matthew’s fingers are often covered with ink.

Chateau D’If Oil, 36 x 48”, 2008 $2,900.00 John Gary Brown lives and works in Lawrence, Kansas and Creede, Colorado. He has a MFA from The University of Washington in Seattle. John taught art classes at The University of Kansas, University of Nebraska, The University of Washington, and The Wichita Art Museum. He has been painting since 1960 and has sold six hundred paintings in twenty commercial galleries over the years. He has won many museum prizes and purchases, including First Prize at the Mid-America Exhibition at the NelsonAtkins Museum in Kansas City, a purchase award at the Joslyn Gallery in Omaha, and a purchase by the Institute of Arts and Letters in New York.

L-27 Hong Chun Zhang Lawrence, KS

Prairie Wind Charcoal on paper, 24 x 36”, 2016 $3,800.00 A Chinese born and US based artist, Hong Chun Zhang received her BFA from Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1994. Two years later, she came to America and graduated with an MA from Sacramento State University in 2002 and an MFA from University of California Davis in 2004. Hong currently lives and works in Lawrence, Kansas. Hong’s work has been exhibited in Asia, Europe and North America. She was a featured artist of the 2012 Lawrence Arts Center Benefit Auction. Her work can be found in DSL Collection (Paris), The White Rabbit Collection (Sydney), The Origo Collection (Zurich), Spencer Museum of Art (Lawrence), and Ulrich Art Museum (Wichita). Hong is represented by Haw Contemporary in Kansas City.

L-28 Susan Grace Lawrence, KS

Figure Sitting Oil on canvas, 32 x 36”, 2009 $1,000.00 The paintings of Susan Grace have been exhibited widely at galleries and museums throughout the U.S. She has received numerous awards for her work. Although she studied painting in Athens, Greece, her academic background is primarily in literature and theater, and she taught courses in modern American and European literature in universities in the U.S. and Greece before becoming a full-time painter. She maintains a studio in Lawrence, KS, where she has lived since 1989.

Heartland/Kansas Summer Acrylic on panel, custom built maple frame, 24 x 24”, 2016 $1,600.00 As an artist trained in analytical psychology, Margaret Weisbrod Morris’s work is a straightforward blend of metaphor and reality, with a touch of the absurd. Working in a variety of mediums and subjects, her work focuses on visually representing sensory dynamics and visual minutiae to convey the intensity of precise moments in life. Morris is drawn to monotonous, repetitive visual elements, and strange, illogical visual situations. Her work juxtaposes emptiness with chaos, calm with intensity, to create meticulous, dreamlike, or irrational scenes that are based in reality but are slightly implausible. Morris holds a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MA from New York University.

L-30 Vernon Brejcha Lawrence, KS

Prairie Pod Blown glass, 10 x 8 x 4”, 2014 $2,000.00 Vernon Brejcha is one of the pioneers of the modern glass movement. He started at the University of Wisconsin with glass legend Harvey Littleton in 1969. Brejcha first taught glass in Tennessee for five years, then at the University of Kansas for twenty-six years turning out several internationally known students. In just one summer, he gave 29 glass blowing demonstrations with a portable unit he built. Short Term Invitational Residencies These residencies include visual and performing artists who are commissioned to create new work for the Lawrence Arts Center.

Project-based Residencies This residency supports area artists who wish to learn new mediums and/or who need temporary studio space to complete special projects. Artists receive use of studio space at the Arts Center, a materials stipend, and private instruction in any medium.

Year-long Residencies The Lawrence Arts Center offers 12 month artist in residence programs to ceramics and printmaking artists. Each year, applicants with M.F.A. degrees apply for the two positions. The residents, chosen by Arts Center staff, other artists, and curators, receive living space, a monthly stipend, curatorial and technical support, instruction in teaching workshops and classes, and a solo exhibition of new work created at the Arts Center. He mostly does line drawings and scanography (photography using a flat-bed scanner for input instead of a digital camera). Bill’s images explore ordinary events or objects, often involving people. Moods, metaphors, and ambiguities abound, so personal interpretations and conversations are encouraged. Forgotten Remains Mixed media, 12 x 12”, 2014 $525.00 Eliza is an abstract artist based in Lawrence. Raised in New York City, she was surrounded by the noisy texture and rich dichotomy of the city and its inhabitants. This alluring tension of extremes is an essential component of her work. She creates abstract works on paper utilizing a variety of techniques — monotype, chine collé, collage, drawing and painting. Monotype, unlike other printmaking methods, is a process through which only one unique piece is made. There are no multiples, no editions. She creates monotypes and layers into them additional techniques. Her process is fluid – she never knows what she is going to create until she begins working. It is then that her conversation with the piece begins. It is a dynamic, evolving exchange between them.

Trio of Chain of Errors Earrings: A, B, C Sterling, copper, bronze, 3” each, 2016 $100.00 each Grace Carmody has been a silversmith and jewelry designer since 1972. She taught classes at the Lawrence Arts Center, the University of Kansas, and at the Spruill Center for the Arts in Atlanta. Her original design concepts are derived from the Modernist movement of the 50s, and also reflect designs of the Scandinavian silversmiths. Grace works from her home studio doing special commissions constructed from gold and silver, and using precious and semiprecious stones as embellishment. Her work has been in over 100 exhibitions.

Censored Lithograph, 22 x 30”, 2014 $450.00 Elizabeth Layton, a native of Wellsville, Kansas, began drawing in 1977 at the age of sixty-eight when she took a drawing class at a local university. In class she learned to use the technique of “blind” contour drawing in which the artist looks at the paper only for points of reference, concentrating on the subject reflected in the mirror rather than the line being drawn on the paper. Every day, Layton worked at creating self-portraits that reflect her response to contemporary social issues. It has been so long in fact that she needed to start clearing out some of her drawers. But when it came time to dispose of “failed” work, she noticed how there were certain areas in some of the drawings that were quite lovely. This made it harder to complete her housecleaning task. The solution: she cut those parts out and threw the rest away. Then much as a quilter might use discarded clothing to make a quilt, Susan started piecing together new work based on the assembled pieces from old work.

In 1974 Stan earned his BFA degree from KCAI in Kansas City, Missouri, and in 1978 he earned his MFA degree from Alfred University in New York State. Stan has been a professor in the School of Art and Art History at San Jose State University since 1981. Stan received the “Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Fellowship Award” in 2005; in 1990 he received a “California Arts Council Award”; and in 1986 he received a “National Endowment for the Arts Award.” Stan’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally, and his work is represented in many important permanent collections.

S-151 Bill Snead (1937 - 2016) Ringo, Paul, John and George. Philadelphia Convention Hall September 2, 1964 Photograph, 22 x 19”, 1964 $400.00 Bill Snead grew up in Lawrence, getting his first photography job at the early age of seventeen at the Lawrence Journal-World. In 1964, when Bill was the photo director for the Wilmington (Delaware) News-Journal, the Beatles came to Philadelphia for a concert. Outside the Philadelphia Convention Hall, Bill saw some “press photographers” heading inside, got in the middle of them, and snuck his way into a news conference. As the Beatles walked in snapping their fingers, cigarettes in their mouths, Bill got ready to snap his shot. This image was taken at the end of the 30-minute news conference. Bill went on to become the photo director of United Press International in Vietnam during the years 1967-1969. Returning to the states, he worked with UPI/Chicago, National Geographic Magazine, and The Washington Post. In 1992, he returned to Lawrence and the Journal-World, writing, shooting, and

S-153 Sally Piller (1955 – 2015) Oimoi Woodcut, 17 x 15”, 2014 $400.00 Sally Frerichs Piller was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1955. She earned her BFA in printmaking at the University of Kansas in 1977. Making woodblock prints was the primary focus of her art making in her adult life, though she also worked in other printmaking techniques such as intaglio, lithography, monotype, letterpress, as well as in many other media, including the most important in her opinion, drawing. From 2007 to 2009, Sally was the owner, director, and curator of 6 Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas, and a friend and

mentor to many artists.

S-154 George Paley (1948 – 2016)

He contributed immensely to the development of small businesses downtown. George Paley graduated with honors with a BA in Communications in Radio-Television-Film from the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. He loved art, music, traveling, and collecting.

FEATURED ARTIST KRIS KUKSI Born March 2, 1973 in Springfield, Missouri and growing up in neighboring Kansas, Kris spent his youth in rural seclusion and isolation along with a blue-collar working mother, two significantly older brothers, and an absent father. Open countr y, sparse trees, and alcoholic stepfather, all paved the way for an individual saturated in imagination and introversion. His propensity for the unusual has been a constant since childhood, a lifelong fascination that lent itself to his macabre ar t later in life. The grotesque to him, as it seemed, was beautiful. Kris Kuksi garners recognition and acclaim for the intricate sculptures that result from his unique and meticulous technique. A process that requires countless hours to assemble, collect, manipulate, cut, and re-shape thousands of individual par ts, finally uniting them into an orchestral-like seamless cohesion that defines the historical rise and fall of civilization and envisions the possible future(s) of humanity. Each sculpture embodies the trademarks of his philosophy and practice, while ser ving as a testament to the multifaceted nature of perception – from timeless iconic references of Gods and Goddess, to challenging ideas of organized religion and morality, to the struggle to understand, and bend, the limits of mor tality. None is complete without a final and brilliant touch of satire and rebuke all conceived in the aesthetic essence of the Baroque fused with the modern day industrial world. In personal reflection, Kris feels that in the world today much of mankind is oftentimes frivolous and fragile, being driven primarily by greed and materialism. He hopes that his ar t exposes the fallacies of Man, unveiling a new level of awareness to the viewer. His work has received several awards and prizes and has been featured in over 100 exhibitions in galleries and museums worldwide including the Smithsonian’s National Por trait Galler y. Kris’ ar t can also be seen in a number of international ar t magazines, book covers and theatrical posters. Kris’ ar t is featured in both public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Australia.
