ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE 2017/18 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR Dear Lawrence Arts Center Members: 2017-18 brought change, excitement, and a reinvigorated take on the role of art in our region. The Lawrence Arts Center rose to the challenge, bringing new ideas and fresh opportunities. Together with the staff, the Board embarked on a strategic planning process to affirm the vision and values of the Lawrence Arts Center. Taking input from our community to heart, we grounded ourselves in our mission with renewed passion for achieving newfound possibilities. Many thanks to Cindy Maude, who served as Interim CEO, and who led the Arts Center through a year of transition. Many thanks, too, to the Search Committee for the time spent in identifying and recommending our new CEO, Margaret Morris. It has been a privilege to work with the dedicated staff, the many talented artists who are the core of the Lawrence Arts Center, and the incredible Board of Directors who provide the guidance, resources and support for this jewel of the Lawrence community. To the future!

FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear Friends, 2017-18 was a year of evolution at the Lawrence Arts Center. While transitions can be trying, change is an opportunity to find one’s center and renew focus. This year, the staff and leadership of the Lawrence Arts Center took the opportunity to take a deep look at what is important about the work we do, why we do it, and what we want to come of it. Not an easy or simple task, but one that allowed us to excavate and reconnect with our foundation as an institution. The result, an extensive strategic plan, re-rooted the Lawrence Arts Center in our passion for the arts, in our belief in its impact on people and cities, and in love for our community. Simultaneously and without waiver, our work marched on. The Lawrence Arts Center never lost sight this year of our core focus on connecting the people of Lawrence with the best in original, innovative, pioneering work in the arts. The Lawrence Arts Center has always been a place that welcomes everyone through its doors to connect, create, explore and experience the arts. It is a place where ideas come to be born and where our community finds its creative center. Our scope is as diverse as our audiences, students and community. Lawrence has distinct personality; sometimes contentious, at times cheeky, reliably vibrant, always independent. The Lawrence Arts Center is part of this community and we evolve together. As we evolve, our core will stay the same: to be a hub for creativity for all. As an artist, educator, business person, advocate, parent, and accidental Lawrenceian, I consider myself incredibly lucky to have found my creative home in this unique city. There is no other place - or people - like Lawrence or the Lawrence Arts Center! Ad astra per aspera,

Margaret Weisbrod Morris Chief Executive Officer

ARTSREACH FINANCIAL AID While the need for financial assistance in our community continues to increase, available state and city funding for the arts continues to decrease, making it harder to rely on public contributions to the Arts Center’s financial aid fund. We are committed to continuing to meet the financial need of Lawrence and

Douglas County residents. We provide access to Arts Center theatre, dance, and visual arts programs to anyone who wishes to participate regardless of income-level or ability to pay. We’re also committed to our community partnerships with social service partners, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Lawrence, Big
