MEMBERSHIP HAS BENEFITS! Popular classes tend to fill fast, so we thank our members by offering them a full week of early enrollment plus a 10% discount on all regular class enrollments! MEMBER PRICES ARE SHOWN IN PARENTHESES WITH CLASS LISTINGS. Membership discounts cannot be used with other special offers, for preschool tuition, or for individual sessions. See page 31 for more about memberships. EARLY ENROLLMENT DISCOUNT is available to all for classes listed with red codes. To receive discount for winter classes you must enroll by December 22, and for spring classes the deadline is March 1. Discount is automatically applied! FINANCIAL AID is available on a sliding scale based on household income throughout the year for youth and adults who wish to enroll in classes. Applications are available at the front desk and online. Last year we provided over $120,000 in financial aid! Welcome to Atmosphere, an interactive art installation and performance for very young children. Performers in Atmosphere explore clouds, wind, light, and rain in a performance directly inspired by the ideas, movements, and words of children ages 3-6 (and their families) in our Play Lab series. Audiences will enter a participatory space where the rain tells us secrets, the wind makes us dance, and live music lights up the sky. The interactive installation, designed by guest artist Sharon McCaman, will be open to the public from January 10 through February 22 with ticketed performances occurring at select times each week. * Performance is recommended for 2-6 year olds, but precocious babies and curious creatives of all ages are absolutely encouraged to attend! The installation is free for all ages, and is open to the public from January 10 through February 22. See page 6 for more.

The Vagina Monologues: Liberated Sisters is a performance that tells the stories of women: white, black, trans, Native American, East Asian, and others. We will share excerpts from Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues plus original music, dance, and monologues inspired by local women. Sparking many movements across the globe, Eve Ensler’s work continues to activate change by confronting the silence surrounding vaginas and sexuality as well as creating spaces for marginalized voices to share their stories. Through the arts’ transformative power, this performance will revolutionize people’s perspectives of what they know women to be.

Based on the same Hans Christian Andersen story that inspired the hit Disney movie, Frozen, the story centers on the struggle between good and evil as taken on by young heroine, Gerda. Weaving together dramatic and comic scenes and dances performed by an 11-piece orchestra, Gerda embarks on a quest to save her playmate, braving sorceresses, robbers, and the Snow Queen in order to rekindle Kai’s inner flame of kindness. The production will feature a cast of over 100 actors, dancers, and singers of all ages.

Story Slam was started in 2010 by long-time Arts Center performing arts aficionado David Hollond. What began as a small group of storytellers and their friends in the Black Box has grown this past decade into a crowd that required a move to the larger Main Stage Theater.
Coppélia is the great comedic ballet of the nineteenth century. All couples who marry at the festival for a new bell will receive a handsome dowery. Swanilda and Franz are set to be one of those couples until Franz is taken with a beautiful young girl sitting on the balcony of Dr. Coppélius’s house. Can the feisty Swanilda prove to Franz she is the only real love for him?

This art installation will activate participants directly through a combination of tactile, audible, and visual senses. Inspired by clouds, wind, light, and rain, this work by Sharon McCaman connects various forms of sensor technology with a variety of textured materials in the space. From plush yarn crocheted to form large life-size wall panels, to bumpy metal screens molded into blob-like shapes, to a hanging forest of sheer tulle fabric, participants are invited to physically engage with the work and, as a result, shape the world itself. This exhibit features works from preschool students at the Arts Center. Illuminating the roots of imagination through fearless creativity, this exhibit offers a rare and inspiring glimpse of the origin of ingenuity and inspiration. Arts Center preschoolers have the opportunity to work with professional artists, actors, dancers, and musicians; attend performances; and create in the studios. Creative confidence and innovative skills are clear in the work of these very young students.
Piloted in the fall of 2016 with support from the Thomas D. Galloway Family, the Kelly Galloway Kindergarten’s arts-based curriculum prepares young students to develop innovation and critical thinking skills while setting the stage for a lifetime love of learning. This exhibition presents the powerful imaginations of some of our youngest artists.

This annual show features works selected by public school art teachers of K-12 students from across Lawrence. Showcasing a cross section of the excellent visual arts programming in Lawrence public schools, this exhibit spotlights the value of arts learning and the importance of fine arts programs in public education. On exhibit just after the Lawrence Arts Center Artsbased Preschool and Kindergarten Exhibitions, the show is an enlightening window into the trajectory of artistic development and creative growth happening every day in Lawrence.
Celebrate the work of an emerging youth artist from the stARTup program featured in the Front Gallery. stARTup is a program for high school artists to work on studio practices to make pieces for a robust portfolio while learning valuable entrepreneurial skills to boost visibility such as website development, grant and scholarship writing, show setup, pricing your art, talking to galleries, and more. Students develop their future as an artist with professional guidance on practices from artists and specialists in the field.

Arts-Based Preschool 2020/21 MARKS THE 35TH YEAR of the Arts Center’s Arts-Based Preschool, which offers a creative approach to early education. The preschool provides social, motor, and creative experiences within an award winning curriculum. The program includes music, creative movement, sculpture, painting, drama, drawing, and opportunities to work with visiting artists alongside experienced early education specialists. This caring, thoughtful early educational environment nurtures creative thinking, decision making, imagination, and cultural awareness. For 2 to 5 yeas olds. Children must be potty trained.

Abigail Smithson is a multi-media artist based in Tucson, Arizona. Born and raised in the Bay Area of California, she received her Bachelor of Arts with a minor in history from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2010 and her Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in 2017. With a focus on documentation, her work is rooted in the appreciation, translation and act of making records. Basketball is her muse; she uses the game as a lens for viewing issues surrounding the body and representation. Her art practice is a way to respond to the history and current culture of the game. abigailsmithson.com During her time as a visiting artist, Smithson hopes to engage the Lawrence community through the game of basketball, using the process of making cyanotypes and recording podcasts with local citizens who have opinions and insights on basketball history and contemporary culture surrounding the game. Smithson’s ongoing goal is to work within communities to understand how basketball exists in each place. Through events, artmaking, and story-seeking, she hopes to create a platform for those around her to share their ideas in collaboration. State of the Arts AT THE LAWRENCE ARTS CENTER, we know the value of artistic and cultural endeavors. Since 1974, Arts Center staff have worked to create engaging arts experiences accessible to everyone. A strong partnership of private supporters and the City of Lawrence has enabled the Arts Center to grow into the largest employer of artists in Kansas, housed in a bustling state of the art facility with studios, stages, classrooms, and galleries used seven days a week year round. We bring artists from around the world to our community to provide unmatched opportunities and unique experiences for students of all ages and abilities, in addition to professional development for practicing artists. Access to arts and culture is proven to have a positive impact on public health and individual wellbeing. Whether participating
as a student in an art class, as an observer at an exhibition, or as an audience member or performer in a theatre production, 40% of participants report feeling more positive about their community after an arts experience according to a study by the Americans for the Arts. Nine out of ten people describe making new friends through arts experiences, and groups built around arts experiences score higher on trust and tolerance.
Access to arts and culture is a defining feature of a strong community with measurable economic impact. At last count, 3% of the businesses in Kansas were arts-based, employing over 21,000. Douglas County leads the state, reporting 5% of businesses based in the arts. 60% of creative jobs in the county are provided by the Lawrence Arts Center.
Consumers of arts and culture are also healthier, with lower stress, heart rate and blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and obesity rates. Research consistently shows that arts education especially after school programs - significantly improves academic success.
The Arts Center is proud to play a role in our community’s arts and culture scene alongside such notable organizations as the Lawrence Public Library, the University of Kansas Spencer Museum of Art, Lied Center, Hall Center for the Humanities, Watkins Museum of History, Van Go Mobile Arts, Theatre Lawrence, Buskerfest, Raven Bookstore, Haskell Indian Nations University and various Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission programs. We are proud to present the annual Free State Festival, which partners with many of these community organizations in city-wide celebration.
