FEATURED ARTIST

JEN UNEKIS LAWRENCE, KS // Jen Unekis was born in Los Angeles, but

spent her childhood in rural Kansas, and on the potato fields in Idaho. On the family farm she was inspired by her environment. The rusty farm equipment, graveyard, and many layers of paint and wallpaper on the plaster and lath walls of the old farmhouse. Many of those same elements may still be found in her paintings. A fine crumbling cracked line, a broken edge, a burnished surface with accidental combinations of textures and layers of color. It is color that most people react to in her work. Inspiring, soothing, and sometimes intense combinations of color. Her work is rooted in the abstract, varied and hard to place in the real world, the exception being occasional hints of natural landscapes or floral forms. Jen prefers to paint on board in acrylic, graphite and oil stick. She shifts the orientation of her work while she paints until the pieces finds its own direction. This allows her to lean into the unexpected. Paying close attention to the pooling of color up against an inky line, or the way fine sketchy graphite marks can be obscured by paint yet still hold your interest. She strives to create Images that feel out of place in a literal world yet still find their place in the world of abstraction. A piece that knows all of its off-balance flaws and embraces them. A piece with its own personality. Jen’s primary source of income comes from commissions and outdoor art shows, she has won multiple awards and has had solo shows at Jenny Wheat Gallery in Kansas City, Phoenix Gallery, Cider Gallery and most recently at The Lawrence Arts Center as the 2019 Art Auction Featured Artist. jenunekis.com

R A I S E T H E PA D D L E In conjunction with the Lawrence Arts Center’s 2019 Benefit Art Auction, we are asking you to Raise the Paddle for the Lawrence Arts Center’s Visiting and Resident Artist Program. With a national reputation for intensive, community-based creative experience, our distinguished program includes year-long residencies, project-based residencies, and visiting artists. The Visiting and Resident Artist program brings artists from across the street and across the globe to the Arts Center to work, teach, and realize ideas that are on the cutting edge of what is possible when art and community come together. For more than 15 years, over 500 different Visiting and Resident Artists have come to Lawrence from across the world. While here, these practicing artists create and exhibit new works in the visual or performing arts. Part of their time is also spent working with artists of all ages and abilities in our studios, schools, and local organizations. While here, visiting and resident artists challenge us, inspire us, and change our lives. When the residency comes to an end, their work and ideas remain. The Visiting and Resident Artist Program builds Lawrence’s reputation as a hub for creative thinking, and it would not be possible without support from generous donors like you!

One recent example of the impact of this program occurred last fall with the Rethink: I Am a Veteran production. Danielle Wyckoff, an artist and instructor from Kendall College of Art and Design, came to Lawrence as a scenic designer and visual artist for our cutting-edge original theatre production and storytelling project centered on the lives of women veterans, their families, and friends. Danielle used printmaking to create an immersive and breathtaking environment for both our lobby and the production set design. Her residency spanned several months of collaborations with performing arts staff, area print artists, and participating female veterans. The meaningful community connections made as a result of Danielle’s involvement continue to have ripple effects on a local and national level. At its most stripped-down, the Visiting and Resident Artist Program requires $50,000 in private support each year. Our goal this year is $80,000. Please help us meet our goal by raising your bid numbers when we call out for $5,000, $2,500, $1,000, $1,000, $500, $250, and $100 donations. Every dollar raised for this program sustains and magnifies the number of artists who can participate and the number of opportunities available to enrich the fabric of our community. Thank you for making a difference!

LITHOGRAPH, 30 X 40", 1982

$450

Elizabeth Layton (1909-93), a native of Wellsville, Kansas began drawing in 1977 at the age of sixty-eight when she took a drawing class at a local university. In class she learned to use the technique of "blind" contour drawing, in which the artist looks at the paper only for points of reference, concentrating on the subject reflected in the mirror rather than the line being drawn on the paper. Every day, Layton worked at creating self-portraits that reflect her response to contemporary social issues. That fall, a local newspaper reporter, Don Lambert, was searching for an interesting subject for an article and stumbled upon the class display at the college. Upon discovering the drawings of this “old woman from small-town America,” Don became her biggest fan – and promoter - and to this day continues to tirelessly promote her drawings and her story. elizabethlayton.com

Jen's inspiring, soothing, and sometimes intense combinations of color, use of line, and textural layered surfaces pull you into her paintings. She leans into the unexpected when she paints, paying close attention to the pooling of color against an inky line, or the way fine sketchy graphite marks can be obscured by paint yet still hold your interest. Maintaining control within a piece without suffocating it, creating a piece that ultimately finds its own beauty, balance, and sense of self. Jen was the featured artist for the Douglas County AIDS Benefit Auction, has participated in The Plaza Art Fair, Brookside, and Westport, receiving best in show and placement awards. She has had solo shows at Apex Art Space and Jenny Wheat in KC, Phoenix Gallery, Cider Gallery, and is in national and international collections, including a recent acquisition by the KU School of Business at Capitol Federal Hall. jenunekis.com

In 2016, he completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at West Virginia University. He has shown in galleries, solo shows, juried exhibitions, and group shows nationally and internationally. His art explores nuances of the human condition, while constantly expanding on his material investigations and means of fabrication. Nate’s work explores the seemingly trivial and overlooked moments of everyday life. Using a combination of ceramic forms and fabricated mixed media elements, he gives a visual presence to these phenomena. His visual language is derived from the simplicity and playfulness of the illustrations found in children’s books and single panel comics. The amorphous form in his sculptures represents the philosophical idea of the perpetually unresolved individual as being and in a constant state of becoming.
