ANGIE AYRAULT

Angie Ayrault's work is the cathartic expression of years of working as a social worker with oppressed persons in settings including prisons, hospitals, and treatment facilities. These experiences intermixed with social justice advocacy, form the basis of much of Ayrault 's art. Her collages and paintings mimic the fascinating metaphorical layers of therapeutic interplay between counselor and patient, paint and surface. The bright color and texture in Ayrault 's work reflect positive attributes associated with our shared human condition: a sense of lightness, hope, and joy.

She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Bowling Green State University in 1977, but never really learned to solder well until she was able to work in her studio. She went back to school, and after three years she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kansas in 1991. During this time she continued to show and sell her work at many selected art fairs and galleries across the country. For D'Agostino, working with her hands has been the only thing that has ever really interested her. Her curiosity about the potential for designing and creating with metal has lasted since she participated in her first art fair in 1980. The shows were local at first but gradually developed into national venues that included galleries as well. Except for a 12-year foray into baskets (see The Basketmaker's Art, Lark Books) her focus has been on jewelry.

Luis Jimenez (1940-2006) was an American artist of Mexican descent who created monumental sculptures for public spaces in cities including Washington, DC; Denver, CO; San Diego, CA; and Lawrence, KS. Born in El Paso, TX, he was also a prolific printmaker drawing images from the broad American experience as well as his Southwestern heritage. "Eagle and Snake" references archetypal images from Mexican and American history and culture. His work is in most major museum collections including The Smithsonian, The Library of Congress, Boston Museum, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, St. Louis Art Museum, The Spencer Museum of Art and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The piece was donated to the auction by Lawrence Lithography. Michael Sims established The Lawrence Lithography Workshop in 1979 as a contract printing and teaching facility for local and regional artists. Based in Lawrence, it provided a place where artists with little or no printmaking experience could collaborate with a master printer to produce original hand-pulled lithographs. Over time the workshop expanded its operation beyond contract printing, increasing its emphasis on printing and publishing national and regional artists. Today TLLW, now located in Kansas City, MO, is one of the few privately owned, fine art publishing presses in the Midwest.

ELIZABETH GRANDMA LAYTON elizabethlayton.com Elizabeth Layton, a native of Wellsville, KS, began drawing in 1977 when she took a drawing class at a local university at the age of 68. In class she learned to use the technique of "blind" contour drawing, in which the artist looks at the paper only for points of reference, concentrating on the subject reflected in the mirror rather than the line being drawn on the paper. Every day, Layton worked at creating self-portraits that reflected her response to contemporary social issues. A local newspaper reporter, Don Lambert, was searching for an interesting subject for an article and stumbled upon the class display at the college. Upon discovering the drawings of this “old woman from small-town America,” Don became her biggest fan and promoter. To this day he continues to tirelessly promote her drawings and her story.
