Let's Stay Creative Dear Friends, In the next months, we are looking forward to emerging from a quarantine that has fundamentally changed how we relate in our world. Throughout this ordeal, we have witnessed incredible strength, experienced renewed connection to the community and been inspired by people’s almost inexhaustible positivity. Lawrence, through it all, you never missed a step. It is because of this character that we will emerge from isolation like a butterfly from its cocoon. With this in mind, we have reinvented our summer programs. Embracing this new era as an opportunity, we flipped our inventor switch to “ON” and fired-up our rocket-boosters to explore even more new ways of making, experiencing and enjoying art. Our new, reinvigorated and regenerated summer programs will launch virtually in June. As restrictions on public spaces and gatherings are released, our programs will ease into in-person experiences. Because we care deeply about the health and safety of everyone, we fully accept that this new reality involves being mindful about our physical spaces, as well as how we interact with each other. In response, all of our programs, policies and procedures will closely follow the phased guidelines for the public outlined by the State of Kansas and Douglas County. Because this is a fluid situation, we will continue to stay informed and adjust our policies to preserve public health, providing updates through email, and our website and social media. The Lawrence Arts Center is an organization that people seek out to create, be inspired, and learn. The core of our work is to connect people with the essence of who they are as individuals and as a community. The result builds a sense of belonging and growth. While there are many changes in the new reality ahead, the heart of the Lawrence Arts Center and the purpose of our work will not change. As artists, we remain the creators, connectors, conveners, and community builders. And as we step out of isolation into a new era this summer, art and creativity are the tools we bring to build the bridge between our past and our present. We’re in this together. Lets do this! #LACStayCreative, Margaret

We are working hard to make your experience not only fun and creative, but also SAFE! We are offering limited on-site youth camps, art institutes, and adult visual art classes. All other classes will be held online. Once you enroll in the activity of your choice you will receive confirmation via email. That confirmation will be followed by class-specific instructions including space, equipment or clothing requirements if your activity will be undertaken remotely. If you have additional questions prior to enrolling, or after you have received specific details, PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL US WITH QUESTIONS!
What Will I Get When I Enroll in a Virtual Class? In general, here’s what you can expect for online classes: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Our exciting summer programming has been designed with young children in mind. Our programming includes options for hours of fun with our open ended supply kits full of our favorite art supplies. In addition, we are offering classes and camps with supply kits and pre-recorded songs, stories and brief supply kit instructions. After enrollment, emails will be sent with specific details on no contact kit pick ups and links to videos and printable instruction. The sky’s the limit on where your imagination and creativity will take you. YOUTH EDUCATION The Arts Center has adapted its weeklong camps into a virtual experience that includes a supply kit for daily projects! Elementary camps are taught on Zoom from 9am to noon by experienced teachers and include a mix of project demos, art-making, movement, engagement activities, sharing and socializing. Lessons will be live, but supplemental videos and projects can extend each day. Middle and high school workshops will be similar experiences where students will explore a medium with an experienced artist in a MondayFriday Zoom setting. Each workshop comes with a supply kit and daily facilitated lessons. Log on from 1-4pm with a clear space to work and let the creation begin with your fellow virtual artists. PERFORMING ARTS The School of Theatre & Music and Summer Youth Theatre will offer virtual experiences for Pre-K-12th grade and adults. Ranging from weekly classes to multi-week camps, instructors in our virtual courses use a combination of live stream classes, recorded videos, and self-guided activities. If and when possible, we are dreaming about adding in-person elements such as street theatre, outdoor parades, and other fun performance surprises! ADULT EDUCATION Adult arts classes will be offered with and without supply kits depending on class content. Online instruction will be conducted by a wide array of professional artists and lecturers via Zoom. Links to those virtual classrooms will be sent in welcome letters once you’ve enrolled! We will continue to focus on making creative connections, building community and developing artistic skills and techniques while we are teaching online. Depending on the class and schedule, it is possible that we can re-establish in-person education as determined by health department guidelines and Arts Center policy. At this time, we hope to hold Workshops and Summer Sampler classes in person, while implementing health and safety measures. We will be limiting the class sizes and communicating with students regarding these new procedures. SCHOOL OF DANCE We may be virtual, but we are still planning a summer filled with dancing and creativity. Classes will be held online via Zoom with the possibility of converting to an in-person class as the summer progresses. In-person class participation is subject to guidelines set forth by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department & Arts Center availability. Class sizes will be limited to ensure quality of education and wellness. Additional information on in-home space requirements, class attire, policies, and opportunities will be shared once students have enrolled. Additional information can be found in the School of Dance Handbook.

Holden Qigong
Michelle Heffner Hayes
Qigong (pronounced chee gung) is a movement, meditation, and breathing practice that originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. Qi refers to energy, while gong translates to skills. Rooted in Taoist and Buddhist philosophies, traditional Chinese medicine, and martial arts, qi gong draws upon images from nature to enliven the body, calm the mind, and elevate the spirit. Like its sister form, tai chi, qi gong includes flowing movements and, like yoga, it contains stretches, postures, breathing, and meditation. We will also do tapping and knocking from traditional Chinese medicine to activate pressure points. This practice does not require previous experience and is suited to all levels of ability. Exercises may be modified for injury, limited mobility, or increased challenge. CDAQG: 7/1-7/22, WE; 9-9:50 AM, $55 ($49.50) $41.25

Us ... us, us, us! In this team-up with Lawrence Humane Society, come study the wonderful qualities of our canine companions and then make some doggone art. We’ll make toys and collars for both our own pets and dogs in need at the Humane Society. Explore how dogs, and their wolf ancestors, move through performance, dance, and puppetry. With all this newfound knowledge we’ll make PSAs, pet portraits, and an event to help hounds find homes.
Ahoy, me hearties! Scrolls and scrimshaw, knot tying and tattoos, swashbuckling pirate accents and lost sea monsters of the Bermuda Triangle - we are setting sail for a week of art making and adventure. Learn nautical cartography, navigating by the stars, and the science of barometers, compasses and sextants. Performance art and dance will focus on storytelling, pirate treasure hunts, and harnessing the motion of the ocean.
Join us to explore the mysteries of the night through visual, dance, and performing art. Light up the page with bioluminescent fireflies and explore the constellations in an installed planetarium. Defy all your newfound knowledge of sleeping and dreaming as you stay up and tell stories by the campfire about nocturnal creatures, both real and imagined. We’ll unpack the scientific mysteries of the earth, sun, moon, and stars. When slumber finally beckons you, explore Aboriginal Dreamtime artwork and American Indian night folklore to create vivid works of art connected to longstanding cultures. The night time is the right time for some exciting artwork!
Spend a week using applied engineering to build a variety of sculptures both outside and in an art studio. The Lawrence Arts Center is collaborating with City Playcorps’ Adventure Playground to help students design within parameters, create ephemeral and lasting sculptures, and utilize collaboration and critical thinking to build works of their own choice. Each day will focus on a shared Physics/Art principle in order to explore the many ways of engineering sculptures; build your essential 3D language as we focus on Material, Mass, Space, Center of Gravity, and Movement. Engineers in age groups will split time outside practicing and learning through creative play.
Come join in on the musical fun! We will play a variety of musical instruments and explore rhythm, movement, singing, and solfege in this interactive musical environment. Students will be encouraged to try everything, to find their voice, and to develop a love and understanding of music that will keep them grooving all week long!

We are so excited to get back to making art in the studios with our ARTspace summer camps! Each week is a different theme for students to explore the different mediums in visual arts through fun, creative projects. The morning and afternoon are different from one another, so feel free to sign up for both AM and PM. We don’t have children on site during the lunch hour. We are running these camps with a limited number of students in each studio. Your children’s safety means so much to us; we will be following protocols recommended by health officials and maintaining clear and consistent communication with parents, staff, and students. See page 8 for detailed information on our summer safety protocols.

This entire week is devoted to creating a playable cardboard arcade game. Each student will work on their own or with friends to create a kinetic sculpture that can be a part of a playable arcade at the end of the week. Other projects include designing tickets, prizes, and posters for their games. STEAM concepts focus on the forces, motion, and engineering that ensure each game works. Using the backdrop of the 1980s, artwork will be big, bold, brash, and definitely neon. It’s on like Donkey Kong!
Now more than ever, it’s important to listen to the trees. Dig deep into the forest and find out about root systems, lichen and moss, seedpods, and all the elements of trees that make them so fascinating. In dance, visual, and performing arts we will explore the forest ecosystem looking into the animals, insects, and plants that live within the trees. Don’t be surprised if we happen upon some mythical creatures such as fairies, gnomes, and other mystical forest dwellers as we investigate the science and magic of a forest.
Contestants, are you ready? Work in visual arts to recreate a bakeoff where you will create scrumptious art pieces. Learn how to shape and form sculpture based on food items and present it to judges. Investigate the chemistry necessary to bake to perfection and follow ingredients in a mixed art and science laboratory. Finalize your creations with colorful flourishes and embellishments and cross your fingers to see if you’re the Great Lawrence Bake Off champion.
Konnichi wa, Tokyo! Explore the long cultural history and architectural beauty of Japan while planning, designing, and engineering a kid-sized, cardboard box metropolis. Students apply their imaginations to fill in the city with artwork, culture, and function. Using Tokyo as an example, we will look at urban planning and design and how it shapes the world we live in. Students gain an appreciation for shape, form, and proportion as they apply these principles to their expanding city. The real magic happens as students take ownership of their structures, identities, and culture within the city.
Explore animals and ecosystems across the world! Trace the taxonomy of wildlife and where these beautiful creatures live in a weeklong animal extravaganza. In performing arts and dance, students will move, script, and perform work that emphasizes the importance of protecting wildlife. Learn to move like animals as you study the aspects of their lives. STEAM principles include biology, animal preservation, endangered species, and ecosystems. In visual arts we will work together to bring 2D and 3D animal art together in a giant interlinking preserve in the lobby. Come on all you wild things, let’s get together and show the world how important our animals are!

Now more than ever before, our members, donors, sponsors, and friends are keeping us inspired and constantly grateful. We don’t know what the next few weeks or months will bring, but please know we are here for you and are inspired by you every day. Many of you have asked what you can do to help during this time to ensure the Arts Center remains strong. Here are a few ways: • Any donation you can make helps us continue to employ artists in our community and continue to provide critical arts programming. • Tag the LAC with #LACStayCreative and show us how you are continuing your creative flow at home! • REMAIN HOPEFUL! Bring focus to the healing powers of art and work together to stay connected and positive during this trying time.
