WELCOME NEAL BARBOUR, ARTS EDUCATION SPECIALIST

Neal Barbour joins the Lawrence Arts Center from Topeka West High School where he taught jewelry, ceramics, painting, drawing, graphic design, and sculpture. Originally from Spokane, Washington, with a B.A. in Writing and Video Production from Western Washington University, Neal has a wide range of experience as a videographer, screenprinter, preschool teacher, and translator, working in a variety of places including Chile, Germany, and along the west coast. After ten years of itinerant artistry, Neal moved to Portland, OR to obtain a Masters in Education with concentrations in Art and English from Portland University. He taught public High and Middle School for three years in Oregon before moving to Lawrence, Kansas in 2011. The Arts Center is proud to announce Nealâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arrival and is looking forward to adding his diverse experiences, talents and interests to the education team.

Dear Arts Center friends, This morning, I sat in our theater to watch award-winning pianist Zhou Yang Mingtian perform for a special audience of our Arts-Based Preschoolers and children from Head Start. Joining the children on stage when Ric Averill and Mingtian invited them to dance to a Chopin waltz, I saw their faces reflected in the surface of our shiny Steinway as they danced around Ric, the piano, and set pieces for our production of The Nervous Set. At the same time, ceramics artists from around the country were assembling throughout the Arts Center as our biennial national Ceramics Symposium, directed by Ben Ahlvers and Margaret Weisbrod Morris, was about to get underway. So many times, in a single day like this one, the best of our exhibitions, performance, and education programs converge in moments that are about artistic excellence and support as much as for children from all backgrounds. Thank you for making it all possible. Your ideas, time, energy, and expertise make the Lawrence Arts Center hum. Your financial support is essential, as is your participation in planning, conversation, art talks, films, classes, Final Fridays, and more. highlights Art Place America: 9th Street Corridor Project: ArtPlace America is a collaboration of national foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts to accelerate creative placemaking across the U.S. A major ArtPlace grant to the Lawrence Arts Center, in combination with a match by the City of Lawrence, will turn 9th Street between Delaware and Massachusetts into a multi-modal avenue with public art. The project will also transform 9th Street into a Complete Street, a street that is planned, designed and operated with all users – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, transit riders and neighbors of all ages and abilities – in mind. The project follows a new model of artist-led street renovation that actively involves the community in the design, engineering, and construction of urban pathways. Building STEAM: This fall, the Hearst Foundation, a national philanthropic resource for organizations working in the fields of education, health, culture and social service, announced a notable award to the Lawrence Arts Center’s Education Program for the continued development of its 4 year old STEAM education program, ArtSpace. Happy Birthday, Steinway! This winter our Steinway Concert Grand piano celebrates its 1st birthday. The presence of the Steinway has enabled the Arts Center’s 940 Live series to fully embrace jazz and classical music, and has set the stage for all genres of music to flourish here. The City of Lawrence’s first Director of Art and Culture! Christina comes to Lawrence from Colorado, where she was the coordinator for the city of Denver’s prestigious public art program. Her role within the City of Lawrence is to work to enhance the coordination of arts and cultural activities in the community. Some of her responsibilities include the creation of a new city-wide cultural plan for Lawrence, coordinating efforts surrounding the city’s role in the ArtPlace grant received recently by the Lawrence Arts Center, Final Fridays activities, and serving as staff liaison for the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission and the Sister Cities Advisory Board

1996 as a way to showcase ceramics has become an annual tradition for the community. More than 600 handmade ceramic bowls produced by area artists, community members and students at the Arts Center will be on sale from $10 up. Announcing the Vanguard Awards: The Lawrence Arts Center announces the first annual Vanguard Awards, honoring youth achievement in the visual arts in Lawrence public schools. Supported by a champion of the arts in the area, the awards are focused on identifying remarkable talent, skill, and originality in young visual artists in Lawrence. The awards will take place in conjunction with the Annual USD 497 Art Exhibition in April and will be announced at Final Friday on April 24.

29 YEARS OF INSPIRING THE CHILDREN OF LAWRENCE! The Lawrence Arts Center’s Arts-Based Preschool offers an inspired learning approach to reading, writing, science, and math for children ages 3 to 5. This caring, thoughtful early education environment nurtures creative thinking, decision-making, imagination, and cultural awareness. Music, sculpture, painting, drawing, and creative movement are an integral part of this award-winning program focused on social, motor, and creative development within a sound preschool curriculum. In addition to the daily creative classroom, children work with a music, drama or creative movement specialist each week, and meet visiting artists from around the world. Choose mornings 9:30am-12pm, or afternoons, 1-3:30pm, Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday. To accommodate differences in family schedules, the Arts-based Preschool also offers extended hours. Morning sessions have optional “Early Bird” starting time of 8:00am, and afternoon sessions have optional “Kids’ Club” ending time of 5:30pm. A fresh new incarnation of the Lawrence Arts Center’s unique holiday classic is set in December 1856, following the sack of Lawrence and the Pottawatomie and Osawatomie Massacres, featuring John Brown, Charles Robinson and other famous Lawrencians. The story recounts the Herald of Freedom Printing Press, destroyed by Sheriff Jones and melted into cannonballs by the abolitionists. The Kansas Nutcracker features professional dancers, actors, musicians, the Lawrence Ballet Theatre as well as community dancers and actors.

REAL STORIES, LIVE & UNCENSORED. Second Friday of every month: September to April (except December) Stories told live. Extraordinary, witty, suspenseful: whatever yarns you have, spin them. This is a don’t-miss occasion to hear and share whoppers, MOTH–style, the second Friday of each month. Raconteurs step up to the mic to bring laughs, tears, surprise, amazement, and the occasional awkward moment. All are welcome, bring a tale to tell on the theme for the evening, or just come to eavesdrop. Never the same story, or evening, twice. Adults 18+ only. Live music & social hour starts at 7pm.
