When you take a class, see a show, or attend an exhibition at 940 New Hampshire, you play a role in the flourishing life of the Arts Center and our ability to influence quality of life in Lawrence and across Kansas. The Lawrence Arts Center began in 1975 as a public and private partnership in a City committed to funding the arts for all citizens. This partnership became even stronger when citizens raised over 3 million dollars in private funds toward the completion of our current building, which was then given as a gift to the City and stands as a symbol of our City’s dedication to the arts. Although the City of Lawrence provides less than 10% of our total funding, our partnership with the City has made it possible for us to maintain this city asset, offer opportunities to children and teens whose families are not able to pay, support artists in all mediums, and expand our vision for offering the best in arts education, exhibition, and performance. Public investment in the arts has distinguished Lawrence for decades, and we believe it works to promote economic development, quality of life, and the connection individuals feel to our City. Art and culture provide social offerings, increase openness, and enhance physical spaces. As we prepare to welcome our new CEO Kimberly Williams to her hometown of Lawrence, we remain committed to sustaining public support for the arts. Kimberly brings a wealth of experience in arts, finance, and management, but especially she brings passion for the Lawrence Arts Center, our longstanding relationship with the City of Lawrence, and our ongoing work in exhibitions, performance, and arts education. We can’t wait to introduce you! With tremendous appreciation for you all,

Tressa Jones 2016/17 PRINTMAKING ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Tressa Jones, artist and printmaker, was born and raised in the Greater Boston Area. After studying fine art and printmaking in Boston, and then in New Mexico she relocated to Missoula, Montana to pursue a MFA in Studio Art at the University of Montana, which she completed in 2016. As a graduate student Tressa held the position of Co-Director for FrontierSpace Alternative Art Space in Missoula, MT and Instructor at the Missoula Art Museum. Jones’s work has been shown nationally and internationally; in July of 2016 she will be a resident artist at Art House Messen in Ålvik, Norway.

welcome 2016/17 artists in residence The Lawrence Arts Center is thrilled to welcome our Ceramics and Printmaking Artists in Residence for 2016-2017. Our residents spend their year working in our studios, teaching, doing community outreach and developing a new body of work. They infuse our studios with a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and skills, bringing new ideas, and offering fresh perspectives to our community in Lawrence. We are delighted to announce that after an internationally competitive process with a record number of highly qualified applicants, we have selected Tressa Jones as our printmaker and Carly Slade as our ceramicist.

Carly Slade 2016/17 CERAMICS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY THE WINDGATE FOUNDATION AND OUR GENEROUS “RAISE THE PADDLE” DONORS AT THE ANNUAL BENEFIT ART AUCTION. 925 Massachusetts Street Lawrence, KS 66044

Carly Slade is a Canadian artist who grew up in “Big sky Alberta” and spent her working life in the trades. From carpentry to concrete, she is most at home in a shop. Her work is heavily influence by her childhood in a blue collar home where work ethic and craftsmanship were highly valued. Using a mixture of materials from ceramic, to embroidery, to industrial building supplies, Slade creates dioramas of labor sites. Through a feminine and whimsical lens, Slade’s work celebrates the labor and systems that keep our modern world running with just a touch of pessimism. Slade received her BFA in Ceramics from the Alberta College of Art + Design, and her MFA in Spatial Arts from San Jose State University. She has also been awarded a summer residency at the Archie Bray Foundation.

Now in their fifth year ARTspace classes focus on a key principle of art and connect it with science, using cultural themes relevant to young people. ARTspace is an inspired afterschool learning environment in which students try new things, test the limits of their imaginations, practice innovation, and build creative connections. Each day, Art Space Afterschool explores a different discipline: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Classes incorporate visits by artists as well as STEM professionals. The integrated science and art curriculum meets national art and science standards. Students have the option to enroll 1-5 days a week.

HANG12 is a youth curatorial board of Lawrence high school students who curate, produce, and install monthly gallery shows for Final Friday exhibitions. HANG12 aims to create shows that highlight viewpoints and ideas important to society within Lawrence. Each month members work with a local artist or organization to collaborate on the final product, gaining skills from professionals on the process of constructing and maintaining a gallery show.

HANG12 meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 3:30-6:00 at the Lawrence Arts Center. In two month periods they establish their show theme, create a call for submissions, move through the curatorial process, generate publicity, and solve the logistics of installing the show. HANG12 members work together with each gallery to install the show the week of their Final Friday show opening. If you are seeking a venue to express yourself, a way to connect to other artists, or real life experience in the art world, then please join HANG12. Contact neal@lawrenceartscenter.org.

Negotiating Objects and Lines in Space FA-TD856 Sat., October 1, 1-3pm, 1 day, $30, ($24) Places are created from spaces based on the content that naturally resides or has been manually situated within them. Working with the moving body, we will examine the inherent spatiality of human life and how we are active participants in the construction of our intimate and global relationships in space. Students will be guided through various compositional scores that will facilitate a more active way of perceiving and thinking about how we use our bodies to inhabit space.

Choreographing for the Camera FA-TD866 Sat. Nov. 19, 4-6pm, 1 day, $30, ($24) In this introductory filmmaking workshop, students will learn the pre-production basics of composing movement for the camera. Curated by Ben Ahlvers September 30 – January 7 Final Friday Reception: September 30, 5pm - 9pm INSIGHT ArtTalk: October 5, 7pm The timing of the exhibition is meant to sync with the 2016 Presidential election. In this current election season, we seem to be bombarded with political rhetoric, reporting, and advertising. As we inch closer to November 8, there are increasing opportunities for artists to remind us of the chasm between our political rhetoric, social realities, and the ideals to which we as a nation claim to adhere. The invited artists in this exhibition not only address many of the issues that candidates incorporate in to their respective platforms for the purpose of gaining votes, but also more importantly the demagoguery prevalent in the current American social and political landscape.
