Dear Friends, Welcome to summer 2015! Summer planning for exhibitions, performance, and visual and performing arts education at the Lawrence Arts Center reaches a peak in the winter. When you read this, we are already looking for your arrival. Make plans now to join us for the Free State Festival, a celebration of film, outdoor art, music, and ideas June 22 –June 28, but also all summer long for classes, camps, workshops, performances, art talks and so much more. Our Board of Directors and staff could not be more enthusiastic about what we’ve planned for the summer of 2015. For preschoolers through high school students, we have a fully articulated, sequential curriculum in dance, theater, and visual arts as well as beginning classes for all ages. We have workshops for fun and classes that present challenging ideas and new techniques. Our classes are taught by practicing artists who are excellent teachers. For ArtSpace camps, scientists work with these teaching artists in the country’s most fun and innovative STEAM curriculum. We invite artists in all mediums to work in our studios, apply for Project-based Residencies, take classes, and attend grant writing workshops. Visiting choreographers teach Master Classes; visiting visual artists work with regional artists to invigorate teaching methods and artistic practice in our studio. Professional directors, actors, musicians, and set designers work with children and teenagers in six rounds of Summer Youth Theater this summer. And, best of all, it all happens at once! Come inside any day or visit us online or call to find out how you can be a part of the Lawrence Arts Center. I hope to see you. We continue to work with the city and all stakeholders on the Free State Festival, city-wide cultural planning, and the 9th Street Corridor Project. Sign up to receive updates about the 9th Street Corridor Project (see page 27).

We are delighted to bring public and private funding from outside Lawrence to these community-wide endeavors. Your support of our work at the Arts Center makes a tremendous difference in our ability to offer financial aid, support the work of artists and teachers, and attract national funding. Thank you. Sincerely,

York Children’s Foundation

Art Space is the integrated visual art and science program for students 1st -5th grades. Based on the idea that critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to innovate are essential skills in all educational environments, Arts Space is an inspired learning environment in which students try new things, test the limits of their imaginations, practice innovation, and build creative connections. Art Space camps and classes focus on a key principle of art and connect art concepts with scientific concepts, under a cultural theme relevant to young people. This integrated science and art curriculum meets national art and science standards and was developed for the program through a grant from the Elizabeth Schultz Foundation of the Douglas County Community Foundation, Tradewind Energy, Enel Green Power, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and Target.

Each day in Art Space camp, students experience visual art, theater and dance activities that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts. Each Tuesday a Scientist-in-Residence visits the studios to lead hands-on science experiments related to the weeks’ theme. Classes incorporate visit by artists in residence as ell as STEM professionals. Students can enroll for all day, or in the AM or PM session. All Day students break for lunch at 12-1pm with Arts Center staff. Students should bring a healthy midmorning and / or afternoon snack and a sack lunch if they are attending all day (Art Space is a sodapop-free zone). The Lawrence Arts Center leads the way in taking STEM to STEAM. In 2009, the White House and the United States Department of Education challenged the nation to find innovative, rigorous ways to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to youth. Acknowledging the vital role art has in teaching innovative and creative thinking, the Art Space program places the Lawrence Arts Center at the epicenter of the movement to add an “A” for “art,” turning STEM into STEAM.

Though it takes time to master the techniques of writing classical music, many great classical works were written by people in their twenties and thirties who met untimely deaths. Ever since man discovered the “corner-less rolling rock” he has been coming up with more ways to use the labor saving invention we now know as the wheel. In celebration of America’s fascination with all things wheeled, Lawrence holds this event to honor mankind’s large creative cerebral cortex, bipedal locomotion and opposable thumbs. This year the Lawrence Buskerfest is joining forces to seal the deal on this being one of the best, most Lawrence-y weekends of the year. The Pre-Parade Final Friday Block pARTy is an event in which anyone can bring their car, bicycle or whatever, then paint them while eating popcorn and listening to live music. In this event, people can view other custom show vehicles from all over the United States and meet their builders. GUNYOUNG KIM: NEW WORKS Ju ne 25 – Ju l y 26 Re ce p tion Ju ne 25 | 5-9pm I NSI G HT A r t Tal k Ju l y 9 | 7pm Ceramic artist Gunyoung Kim’s figure sculpture captures inner psychological aspects of humanity through surreal facial expression, subtle gestures and placement. Her recent work is about the connections and disconnections that happen in a relationship because of complex and changeable emotions between two people. “Nonverbal emotional cues such as eye contact, facial expression, body posture, and interpersonal distance; these things speak broadly about the tangled thinking and feeling that occurs when we interact with other people. Gunyoung is the 2014-15 Artist-in-Residence in ceramics

J u l y 3 1 – Au g u s t 2 5 R E C E P T I O N Ju l y 3 1 | 5 - 9 p m The contradictions that exist in relationships between people, groups, and nations are the thematically embedded in Barry Fitzgerald’s latest paintings and mixed media images. Metaphorical, narrative, and symbolic concepts are used to explore portrayals of personal, social and cultural observations. Technology and its transitional and evolving impact on these relationships threads through aspects of the work, while references to nature and the environment suggest a sense of permanence and stability.
