2023 School of Dance's End of Year Showcase

WELCOME to the End of Year Showcase presented by the students and faculty of the School of Dance! This year’s performance series is nothing less than remarkable as it features over 230 students, faculty-choreographed works on 49 classes, Lawrence Ballet Theatre, and seven senior solos.

This program is beyond valuable. My heart is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve as its director and, more importantly, to work alongside our tremendous staff and outstanding faculty. To have incredible opportunities, it takes incredible people to stand up, lead and bring positive creativity to the Arts Center.

This year’s graduating class is more than noteworthy. If not for its size, then for its character. Each member of this year’s group is notable for their dedication, passion, and connections to the community. To Arbor Mulligan, Caroline Börk, Grace Xie, Gracia Greenhoot, Henry Horan, Linnaea Radley, and Robin Imbeau, we are immensely proud of you and your many achievements!

Understanding what it takes to support a dancer, our mission of providing opportunities in dance to the community would only be in vain without those who care for our students. From the deepest part of our hearts, we thank our parents, volunteers, and those not named in this letter for all you do behind the scenes! You’re certainly not invisible. About Our Graduating Seniors

ARBOR MULLIGAN

Working in genres from Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz, to Hip Hop, Arbor Mulligan has embraced her love of dance at the Arts Center for 14 years. She has also served as a dance assistant since she was 13, sharing her enthusiasm for dance with the younger dance students. Arbor participated in several incredible shows at the Art Center; including Carnival Of The Animals, The Lorax, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, and many end-of-year showcases. She is graduating from Lawrence High School this month. At LHS, Arbor was heavily involved in the choral department, and the National Honor Society as well as serving as a student ambassador. Next fall, Arbor will attend Drake University in Des Moines, where she is undecided about her major, and plans on continuing dance classes as well as being a part of the choral program.

CAROLINE BÖRK

Caroline Joy Börk started school at LAC arts based preschool and will graduate from Free State High School. Caroline has studied dance at LAC for 15 years including Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Musical Theatre Dance and 13 years of tap. Favorite roles from LAC theater: Burning Eldridge Hotel, The March Hare, Jemima/Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Ursula/The Little Mermaid Jr, & Mary Poppins/Mary Poppins.

Caroline was awarded the Scholastic Silver Key in One Act play writing, International Thespian Festival Superior Rating recipient for original short film & music performance, KMEA regional jazz soloist, and art scholarships. She’s the FS Marching Band drum major & enjoys Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Improv Team, writing, ceramics, art & climbing team. After college, Caroline hopes to combine her interests with a career in intermedia arts.

GRACE XIE

Grace Xie (18) has been a student of the Lawrence Arts Center for 14 years where she studied Ballet, Modern, and was a member of Lawrence Ballet Theatre for six years. Throughout her time at the Lawrence Arts Center, she performed in The Magic Toy Shop, Snow Queen, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, La Fille Mal Gardee, Lawrence Ballet Theatre’s annual performances, and at the Regional Dance America Midstates Festival.

Grace is the President of Free State High School’s National Honor Society, Co-President of Asian Culture Club, member of the Science Olympiad team, and cellist in the Symphonic Orchestra. Grace will be attending Northwestern University in the Fall where she plans on majoring in Statistics or Data Science and continuing to dance.

GRACIA GREENHOOT

Gracia Greenhoot (18) has been a student at the Lawrence Arts Center for 15 years; she studied Ballet, Modern, and Jazz and has been a member of Lawrence Ballet Theater for seven years. While at the Lawrence Arts Center, she performed in numerous productions including The Sleeping Beauty, The

Nutcracker, Giselle, La Fille mal Gardée, and Lawrence Ballet Theater’s annual spring performances. She also performed at and attended the Regional Dance America MidStates Festival five times as a member of Lawrence Ballet Theater. Additionally, she attended numerous summer intensives with the Lawrence Arts Center as well as with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City.

Gracia will graduate from Lawrence Free State High School this May as a two-year member of the National Honor Society. Next year, she plans to attend Texas Christian University’s School of Classical and Contemporary Dance as a Ballet major and Movement Science minor.

HENRY HORAN

Henry Horan (17) has danced at the Lawrence Arts Center for the past twelve years, beginning with the Kansas Nutcracker. During his time at the Arts Center, Henry has worked on Ballet and Modern and has been a member of the Lawrence Ballet Theatre for the last three years. Outside of the Arts Center, Henry has participated in debate, forensics, and choir at Bishop Seabury Academy. Next year Henry plans to attend the University of Denver where he will pursue a degree in Environmental Science. Although he will not be majoring in dance, he plans to continue dancing at the University of Denver and in the surrounding area.

LINNAEA RADLEY

Linnaea Radley (17) has been dancing since the age of three, beginning at the Hudson Valley Academy of Performing Arts. She’s studied at the Lawrence Arts Center for the past 9 years, focusing primarily on Ballet and Modern, danced with the Lawrence Ballet Theatre for the last 7, and twice been a recipient of the Carmine Ballere scholarship. Her favorite performances here include Sleeping Beauty, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, Gissele, La Fille Mal Gardee, Les Sylphides, LBT repertoire, and the Nutcracker.

Outside of dance, Linnaea is the eldest of six siblings, has so many diverse interests, sings with the LHS A Cappella Choir, and plans to major in History at KU while continuing to dance, possibly as a freelancer.

ROBIN IMBEAU

Robin Heatwole Imbeau will be graduating from Lawrence Free State High School. They have danced at the Lawrence Arts Center since age 5, taking a range of dance classes such as ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, and tap. Robin has also participated in Summer Youth Theatre, both on stage and in technical theater. Outside of the Lawrence Arts Center, Robin participates in choir and theatre at Free State. In the fall, they plan to study environmental science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Even though Robin will not be majoring in dance, they still hope to be involved with an on-campus tap group.

About the Boys Dance Scholarship

THE SCHOOL OF DANCE offers scholarships for young men who demonstrate an interest in the field of dance. To be eligible, applicants must be between second and 12th grade, have trained at the School of Dance for a minimum of one year, and be endorsed with a reference from a School of Dance faculty member. In addition, scholarship awardees agree to meet with the School of Dance director each semester. Scholarships awarded can be used to cover 50 percent of dance class tuition during the Fall and Winter/Spring semesters. About the Carmine Ballere Scholarship Award

Established in 1997, this scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated excellence in dance and a commitment to their craft. Encouraging the study of ballet and supporting a life-long devotion to dance, this scholarship covers the cost of four ballet and pointe classes per week and all production and participation fees during the Fall and Winter/Spring semesters. Those awarded must be enrolled in Ballet IV-VII and also be available to serve as teachers’ assistants for one dance class per week. Auditions are scheduled during the Spring semester.

ABOUT LAWRENCE BALLET THEATRE

Lawrence Ballet Theatre is the resident pre-professional ballet company of the Lawrence Arts Center. The mission of LBT is to provide extensive training, performance opportunities and artistic experience to dancers seeking to develop advanced experience in preparation for a professional career in dance. Led by Artistic Director Cynthia Crews, company members gain exposure and experience through numerous performances of classical ballet repertoire and original works. LBT dancers work directly with professional guest choreographers in addition to their work with the artistic director. Lawrence Ballet Theatre is a member company of the prestigious Regional Dance America/MidStates.
