Membership is Meaningful Your membership…. • helps young folks in our community develop entrepreneurial skills, build confidence, and make a difference in our community. • allows the Arts Center to partner with other community groups like the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association, the City of Lawrence, and more to provide free shows, performances and exhibitions, creating a stronger community. • provides financial aid to anyone and everyone who needs it in order to learn and participate in classes.
Renew or start your membership today and support the arts! “ I wanted to share a story from the call-back audition for School House Rock. My daughter was so excited to attend but also a little nervous. When we picked her up after auditions she was full of energy and enthusiasm. She told us about the process: the songs she sang, the dance, scenes she read. She then said, ‘even if I don’t get in it will be fine, I am just glad I got to be creative with other people for a few hours.’ What you all do matters in any year, but this year in particular it has been more important than ever. Thank you for all you do.” – A Lawrence Arts Center Theatre Parent

HEART OF THE CITY
As we emerge, we’re rededicating ourselves to broadening accessibility, both financially and physically.
Landing the Plane
We’re continuing with new ideas and infrastructure implemented during the past year into the future, including virtual and hybrid classes and event livestreaming.
Last year was like flying through a thunderstorm in a plane we were still building. As an organization and as a community, we summoned every ounce of creativity, grit, and resiliency to make it through this storm. Now, it seems as though the skies are clearing enough to land the plane, and we can finally step out to look around. This coming year is about healing and recovery. More importantly, this year is about a recovery that lays the foundation to rebuild in a way that makes us better and stronger than before. This moment is an opportunity to take stock of our strengths and our best qualities. It is also time to recognize what does not work anymore, so that we can focus on making changes for the better.
We’re taking action as enthusiastic partipants in national conversations about arts in education and diversity throughout all of our programming.
This season is our first full step into pandemic recovery. After a year of quarantines, social distancing, communicating through a mask and constantly waiting for the Wi-Fi to reboot, we emerge enthusiastic to reconnect and revive life in person. As artists, we know that it is the nature of art to bring people together and promote wellbeing. This unique quality makes the arts a custom-built tool to help us heal from what we’ve been through. Because of this, our priority right now at the Lawrence Arts Center is to provide multiple platforms to bring people together while casting a wide net to reach new neighbors as well as old friends.
Join us as we continue to learn and grow.
Express yourself!
It might take a while for society as whole to fully resume a healthy routine again. By making the arts active in our lives and community, our pandemic recovery can begin immediately. Ad Astra Per Aspera,
Margaret Weisbrod Morris, Chief Executive Officer

Ghosts of Segregation PHOTOGRAPHS BY RICHARD FRISHMAN
September 10 - December 12 All human landscape has cultural meaning. Because we rarely consider our constructions as evidence of our priorities, beliefs and desires, the testimony our landscape tells is perhaps more honest than anything we might intentionally present. Our built environment is society’s autobiography writ large. Ghosts of Segregation photographically explores the vestiges of America’s racism as seen in the vernacular landscape: schools for “colored” children, theatre entrances and restrooms for “colored people,” lynching sites, juke joints, jails, hotels and bus stations. What is past is prologue. We often take our daily environments for granted, but within even the most mundane edifice may lurk an important bit of history. If we are curious and diligent, we can read our surroundings like a book. That stairway apparently to nowhere once went somewhere. The curious palimpsest of bricks covers something. What purpose did they serve? While most of the images currently in this project are focused on the Deep South, prejudice has no geographic boundaries; the photographer says he has all of America to explore. These troubling specters are as alive today as they ever were; often cloaked in different manners, but as much current events as history. The ghosts of segregation haunt us. This expansive collection will be the Lawrence Arts Center’s only exhibition this fall. As with all exhibitions here it will be free and open to the public. Check the Arts Center website for talks, films, and performances connected to Ghosts of Segregation. The Ghosts of Segregation traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions, Pasadena, Calif. Lawrence Arts Center and Pipeline Productions present Dar Williams with Heather Maloney
OCTOBER 21 | 7PM ADVANCE TICKETS $29, $31 DAY OF
The initial idea came in a flash. Dar Williams was driving on an isolated highway, crossing from New York into Ontario, surrounded by frozen fields, silver trees, and empty sky, when inspiration struck. “I thought, ‘I want to write a biker song!,’” Williams says with a laugh. “And then my second thought was, ‘I want to write an epic biker song.’ The Greek messenger of the dead is named Hermes, and I want to write about him-the god of travelers and thieves.”
