Friends,

MESSAGE FROM MARGARET

After a long winter, we are ready to emerge into sunnier, warmer times. Irrespective of what the universe has in store elsewhere, at the Arts Center our focus has been on building a summer full of joy, new ideas, a sense of belonging, and a lightness of being in everything that happens here. We invite you to come and connect with each other, learn some-thing new, and tap into the benefits that art brings to our lives. Research shows that engaging in the arts positively impacts mood, physical health, and our overall well-being in numerous ways. The arts also cause us to reframe our perceptions of the world, and each other, which in turn encourages empathy. By providing multiple opportunities to engage with the arts here at the Arts Center, our goal has been to create vehicles for connection and catalysts for reflection. In doing so, we hope that we are helping to build greater understanding of our humanity. At a time when we are all tasked with recovery from the chaos caused by a global pandemic, we believe that these benefits are more essential than ever and should be available to everyone. See you soon,

Margaret Weisbrod Morris, CEO

Art is for everyone.

WHY ARE JANE & MARK POTTS ARTSTARS? “When we first moved to Lawrence nearly 10 years ago, the Arts Center was about the first local institution that captivated us. We love the arts and clearly they were thriving at LAC. We quickly came to learn that we were not alone—the Arts Center is central to so many lives in Lawrence, from classes serving seemingly every kid in town to great exhibits, theatrical shows, and unique events like Art Tougeau, the Souper Bowl, steamroller printing and the Free State Festival. Plus, of course, the many wonderful and talented people who work and create art there and have become our friends. That’s why we support the Arts Center—as we’ve put down roots in Lawrence over the past decade we can’t imagine life here without it.”

Art is for everyone.

EXHIBITIONS MAY 27 - JUNE 18

ROSA NUSSBAUM | THE MAGIC BROCCOLI FOREST

2021/22 Printmaking Artist in residence

The Magic Broccoli Forest is about the worlds we build for ourselves. This particular world I built is made out of friendship and love and is set in the strange landscape of depression. These past two years, we have had time to cultivate rich inner lives. In wave after wave of the pandemic, my ties to capitalist modes of production have disintegrated. Goal-oriented structures washed away, leaving social ones that support kindness, joy, and care—care for the self, for family, for friends, and, more broadly, care for the world we live in. Often these relationships had to be remote, mediated, and infused with longing and fear for those we loved. I could not be present for really important moments. That was horrible and scary. My depression got really bad and made it hard to communicate. So we came up with a system, a way of saying I love you, but I can’t talk right now because I’m a bit broken. It had to be something that wasn’t otherwise used in conversation, so we settled on . And with love and play and care, life kept being worth living.

JONATHAN CHRISTENSEN CABALLERO: SEEDS OF TOMORROW/SEMILLAS DEL MAÑANA

2021/22 Ceramics Artist in residence

Seeds of Tomorrow/Semillas Del Mañana is a representation of the will the Latin American community has to work for a better life for their families and for themselves. Latin Americans are part of the history of migration in Kansas and an integral part of the fabric of the United States. From the Mexican families who labored for the Santa Fe Railroad of yesterday, to Central American factory workers who continue to feed us today, our stories represent the hope and faith for the seeds of tomorrow.

JUNE 24-JULY 23

In this exhibition, I focus on magical portraits of some of the people who helped me in my wanderings through this Broccoli Forest. I want to show the mental health struggles and isolation in tandem with the wonderful people that I love and am loved by. As the world has re-opened, we are expected to re-integrate into pre-pandemic capitalist structures. I am not ready to go back. I want to honor the world of care and self-reflection that is being eclipsed by this old normality. I think that this inner world can be the foundation for a better one.

MAKING IT WORK Artists who are also parents navigate all-consuming roles that compete with each other, in the best of circumstances. Living in pandemic times further exacerbates these challenges. How, then, does one as an artist, a parent, a caregiver, a professional in the world, “make it work”? Some artists embrace the generative possibilities of parenthood, through subject matter, collaboration, or new rhythms and processes. For others, caring labors offer a lens through which to consider institutional structures, political reform, activism, and more sustainable futures. Making It Work brings together six contemporary artists from around the US whose familial bonds and extended caring communities creatively inform their artistic practices. Through drawings and photographs, videos and participatory work, installations and performances, these artists engage the ties of kinship, tell stories across generations, posit caregiving as a political act, and develop community-minded initiatives for change. Featured Artists: Pilar Agüero-Esparza, Alberto Aguilar, Christa Donner, Lise Haller Baggesen, Cara Romero, Jina Valentine Programming from The Black Lunch Table Curated by Rachel Epp Buller and Maria Velasco

Madagascar, A Musical Adventure Jr.

The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

Peter and the Starcatcher

Legally Blonde the Musical

Music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, book by Kevin Del Aguila. Alex the lion is the king of the New York Central Park Zoo along with his best friends, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo. Spurred on by curiosity for the great unknown, Marty and his friends (with the help of some prodigious penguins) escape from their home and find themselves on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King Julien’s Madagascar.

Written by John Glore. Though the characters may be familiar, each of your favorite storybook fables is uproariously derailed in this adaptation of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith’s book of fractured fairy tales. Wild music and witty narration accompany the likes of ineloquent giants, sassy barnyard animals, colossal cow pies, and enough stinky cheese to go around.

Written by Rick Elice, Music by Wayne Barker. A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-intraining who realizes that they are traveling with precious cargo: starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates—led by the fearsome Black Stache—the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach. Elle Woods appears to have it all before her life is turned upside down. Determined to win back her love, Elle ingeniously charms her way into the prestigious Harvard Law School. With the support of some new friends, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.

Tap

Qigong (pronounced chee gung) is a movement, meditation, and breathing practice that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. Qi refers to energy, while gong translates to “skills.” Rooted in Taoist and Buddhist philosophies, traditional Chinese medicine, and martial arts, qigong draws upon images from nature to enliven the body, calm the mind, and elevate the spirit. Like its “sister form,” tai chi, qigong includes flowing movements and, like yoga, it contains stretches, postures, breathing, and meditation. We will also do tapping and knocking from traditional Chinese medicine to activate pressure points. This practice does not require previous experience and is suited to all levels of ability. Exercises may be modified for injury, limited mobility, or increased challenge. CDAQ3: 6/8-6/29, WE; 5:30 PM-6:30 PM, $60 ($54) $45
