Dear Arts Center Friends, The three primary facets of our mission intersect every day. Artists teach, create, exhibit, and perform throughout the building, engaging everyone who comes through these doors in exhibitions, performance, and visual and performing arts education. It’s high-energy and fun, and we invite you to join us. This week: Visiting artist Luke DuBois (lukedubois.com) spoke to students and community audiences about the processes of creating his “Hindsight is Always 20/20,” an exhibition with new work he created for the Arts Center. The show opens possibilities for political and historical discussions about language and politics, and we chose it for this election season to be complemented by our production of Brecht and Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, a dark political satire with a happy ending. Ric Averill’s production and DuBois’s exhibition embody the potential of art to encourage conversation about what makes us human, what are our responsibilities to one another, and what words have to do with it all. Both “Hindsight is Always 20/20” and The Threepenny Opera demonstrate our commitment to employing artists, including visiting artists, and integrating exhibitions and performance with our mission in arts education. Dubois worked with arts center students, and our theater students worked as techies for Threepenny whose female lead graduated from our Summer Youth Theater program and is now an actress in Los Angeles. You’ll read this course and event catalog when new exhibitions are in the building and different performances are on the horizon, but the idea is the same. We are committed to engaging all people in arts education, live performance, and exhibitions in an artist-centered environment. We believe that investment in creative endeavors animates places and people, makes our conversations more interesting, raises children’s test scores and teaches empathy, improves livability and safety, enhances the economy, brings diverse people together, and makes every place a much better place to live.

The Arts Center has re-cast the beloved Christmas ballet and set it in 1861, Kansas’ first year of statehood. More than 130 dancers and actors, from students to professionals, and a 13-piece orchestra featuring a mandolin quartet weave together Kansas’ abolition, suffrage and temperance politics with oversized personalities, unpredictable weather, plains landscape and the Civil War into Clara’s surreal ballet dreams. The intensity of the politics of the time paved the way for Quantrill’s Raid just two years later.

Archie Scott Gobber

Lisa Lala

Kent Michael Smith

Ben Ahlvers

Archie is a painter currently living and working in Kansas City. He is best known for eye-catching imagery that employs clever wordplay as a vehicle for commentary on social topics. Gobber has exhibited his work throughout the country, has been collected in numerous collections, and has received several awards for his art. www.archiescottgobber.com

Known for her luscious, expressive oil paintings on glass and canvas, Lisa Lala became well known for her Birds on a Wire series. Other series include the Hill series, Ferris Wheel series, the List series, and most recently the Scribble/Tangle series, all which often include her doodles, drawings and stream-of-conscious writings sketched into the paint with a carpenter’s pencil. Lala attended the University of Kansas where she received a BFA. Subsequently she studied under New York painter Wolf Kahn, Slovenian painter Tjasa Demsar (in France), and abstract painter Philomene Bennett in Kansas City. With over ten sell-out shows since her launch in 2003, Lala’s work is now in many notable public, private and museum collections. Lala is represented by galleries in four cities: Atlanta, Kansas City, LA/Laguna Beach, and her hometown Manhattan, KS. She has also exhibited in Belizian Arts, Central America, and several galleries in NYC. www.lalastudio.net

Kent Michael Smith received a BFA in painting from Emporia State University and an MFA in painting from Ohio University. His work has been widely exhibited and is included in noteworthy collections such as the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.; The University of Kansas Hospital.; Emprise Bank Corporate Collection. His work was recently featured in New American Paintings. www.kentmichaelsmith.com

Recently featured in Ceramics Monthly magazine, Ben is known for creating whimsical ceramic figures that contain a vein of wit and humor, with an undertone of deviousness and mystery. The narratives in his work are rooted in his experiences as a father and simultaneously touch on relationships and experiences beyond this role. Ben studied at Southern University Edwardsville and received his MFA at Ohio University. He actively exhibits his work which can be found in numerous collections around the country. www.benahlvers.com
