Welcome to the Lawrence Dance Intensive: Summer Ballet 2019! We are thrilled to have you spend your summer dancing with us. This program is made possible through a collaboration between the Lawrence Arts Center and the University of Kansas Department of Theatre and Dance. This two-week ballet intensive provides dancers with world class instruction by accomplished faculty, guest artists, and choreographers in the KU dance studios. It is important that every parent/student reads this informational packet fully and understands the demands of this Intensive experience, especially for a first-time attendee.
About the Lawrence Arts Center School of Dance Established in 1985, the mission of the School of Dance is to cultivate artistry, excellence, and healthy communities through dance training, performance, and outreach. Our vision is to make dance 100% accessible to the entire Lawrence community. For over 30 years, the School of Dance’s curriculum has been based on national dance education standards and taught by professionals. Focused on developing the artist as well as the art, the School of Dance offers frequent opportunities for performance through numerous and diverse dance productions as well as the pre-professional ballet company, Lawrence Ballet Theatre.

June 14: Final day of Half Intensive June 21: Last day of Full Intensive, choreography showcase, and dormitory checkout STUDENT FORMS (HEALTH WAIVER/LIABILITY WAIVER FORM) In addition to registration, all Intensive students are required to submit a signed waiver of liability and medical release forms. This form will be sent digitally to be e-signed.
Daily Schedule NON-RESIDENT DROP OFF & PICK UP Student drop off/arrival is scheduled daily from 8:40-8:55am and pick up/dismissal from 2:35-2:45pm for Half Intensive students, and 4:05-4:15pm for Full Intensive students. During these times, an Intensive staff member will be present to monitor drop off and pick up. In the morning, students should be dropped off on the north side of Robinson Center at: 1301 Sunnyside Ave #251, Lawrence, KS 66045 In the afternoon/evening, students should be picked up on on the south side of Robinson Center at: 1200 Schwegler Dr Lawrence, KS 66045 See parking map on back page for student drop off/pick up zones. theatredance.ku.edu

What to Expect on your First Day During the June 10 morning session, students will attend a brief welcome meeting with the faculty and staff. Each student will then attend one of two ballet placement classes (determined by age) and either a pointe placement (students with at least 1 year of prior experience en pointe) or specialty class . A lunch break will be provided (nonresident students are responsible for bringing their own lunches or purchasing a lunch at DeBruce. During the afternoon session, all students will have specialty class and students attending the Full Intensive will have an audition for the choreographed works.
Daily Curriculum All classes begin at 9:00am, though classes and length of studio time vary each day. All students can expect between 1.5-2.5 hours of ballet technique 5 times a week, including a traditional ballet class and a specialty class, such as variations, batterie, or pirouette class. Below is a sample schedule featuring some of the classes offered during the Intensive:

Class Attire
What To Bring
Students are required to wear proper attire for each class as listed below. Students are also encouraged to bring sweatpants/sweatshirt in case the studios are cool during the morning session.
Non-residents should bring the following items with them to class each day:
CLASS ATTIRE FOR GIRLS/YOUNG WOMEN BALLET: Any color leotard, tights, ballet shoes; hair must be secured in a bun. POINTE (determined by pointe placement--must have at least 2 years of prior experience en pointe): Pointe shoes and supplies. JAZZ/CONTEMPORARY: Any color leotard, tights (convertible), black jazz pants/leggings/capris pants, jazz shoes (suggested) or ballet shoes (if student does not have jazz shoes). MODERN: Any color leotard, tights (convertible or nonconvertible), black jazz pants/leggings/capris pants, bare feet. FINAL SHOWCASE ATTIRE (for Full Intensive students only): black leotard, any style CLASS ATTIRE FOR BOYS/YOUNG MEN BALLET: Fitted white t-shirt, dance belt, black tights, ballet shoes. JAZZ/CONTEMPORARY: Fitted white t-shirt, black jazz or athletic pants, jazz shoes (suggested) or ballet shoes (if student does not have jazz shoes). MODERN/PILATES: Fitted white t-shirt, black jazz or athletic pants, bare feet.
Meals & Snacks Non-resident students are responsible for supplying their own lunches/snacks each day. Meals can be purchased at Courtside Café at the DeBruce Center using cash or credit card. It is crucial that every student is equipped with lunch and snacks to provide proper energy and nutrition throughout the day. Students will be escorted by an Intensive staff member to their lunch area each day. Resident students, please see “Meal Options” under the Housing section.

Resident campers staying in the dorms are provided a meal card covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner for each day of the intensive, plus lunch and dinner on arrival day.
Full Intensive campers have the option of staying in rooms in Ellsworth Hall dormitory, reserved for newly admitted freshmen and located atop Daisy Hill on KU’s beautiful Lawrence campus. Housing for Full Intensive campers includes all linens, plus a meal card that covers three meals per day between June 10-21 plus lunch and dinner for arrival day on June 9. One full-time chaperone/ resident coordinator will be on duty for every 15 students. Chaperoned evening and weekend activities will be planned for students, parent permission pending. ABOUT ELLSWORTH HALL Ellsworth Hall features beautiful view of the entire campus, a fully equipped Academic Resource Center, a recently remodeled study room, and student rooms including suites and traditional two-person rooms. Rehearsal studio spaces are available in neighboring Hashinger Hall via appointment; LDI dancers should bring their driver’s license or ID card upon check in. Amenities at Ellsworth Hall include: wireless internet; FREE laundry; vending machines; 24-hour staffed main desk/security and bus service. Smoking (including e-cigs and vaporizers), pets and alcohol are prohibited. For more information about Ellsworth Hall, please visit KU’s Housing website: housing. ku.edu/residence-halls/ellsworth#Hall-info ARRIVING AT ELLSWORTH HALL (JUNE 9) The check-in date for all Full Intensive campers is scheduled for Sunday, June 9, between 2-4:00 pm. An LDI staff member will greet students outside Ellsworth Hall upon arrival and distribute their room keys and meal cards to the student. An LDI staffer will show students to their room where students can get settled. Lunch and dinner are available on Arrival Day at Mrs. E’s Dining Hall in Daisy Hill.

University of Kansas Parking pick up & drop off Public parking is extremely limited on campus. Please note that the only parking spaces available will be in the Allen Fieldhouse Garage, which offers hourly parking, and metered parking south of Robinson Gymnasium. Please see the map of the KU campus for available parking locations as well as drop-off and pick-up zones.
If a student is unable to make the check-in window, please contact the School of Dance Coordinator at olivia@ lawrenceartscenter.org as soon as possible and alternate arrangements will be made. CHECKING OUT OF ELLSWORTH HALL (JUNE 21) Campers should pack up their belongings the night prior to check out on June 21, as campers will be formally checkout after breakfast. Luggage & belongings will be left in Ellsworth Hall conference space and available for pick up immediately following the showcase.

Where to park and how to get there! Gated parking is available in the covered garage west of Robinson Center on Irving Hill Road, and long-term meters are available in Lot 90 south of the Center. Fee is $1.50 per hour. Parkmobile-enabled meters are available for an additional 35¢ transaction fee charged by the mobile app. Questions?
