D i re c to r ’s No te Welcome to The Music Man: Concert Version in South Park. We are excited to share this musical theatre masterpiece with our community. Partnering on this production with the Lawrence City Band at South Park fulfills a historic and artistic dream, bringing together community, beautiful live music, and the artistry of live theatre. The Lawrence City Band began performing regular outdoor concerts at the turn of the 20th century. In 1906, Buch’s Military Band (as the band was known), gave a special concert for then vice-presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt at Lawrence’s Santa Fe Train Station. The event raised enough money for a gazebo to be built in South Park. Not long after, the group was disbanded and absorbed by the Haskell, Lawrence High School, and University of Kansas bands. In 1964, Lawrence High School band director Charlie Kassinger reorganized the Lawrence City Band to be composed not of students, but of local Lawrence musicians. Kassinger also established the first “Summer Concert Series,” which took performances to various parks throughout Lawrence. In 1969, under the direction of Conductor William Kelly, the South Park Gazebo was established as the sole location for the concerts, which remains the case today. We recognize the history of the Lawrence City Band and its legacy within our community as a celebration of place, people, and art. We are proud that we can bring you this production, and we invite you to share in the revelry of the event by clapping, cheering, laughing, and singing along. Thank you Justin, Erin, Kayla, Rachel, Paul, and Samaria for your tireless work loading and unloading equipment, and staying positive while creating new experiences. A special thank you to the Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department, Manning Music, Margaret, Cindy, Ric, and Adrian. The biggest thank you goes to the parents, families, and cast for your hard work rehearsing outdoors no matter the weather, and for being wonderful, kind people. A very special thank you to our audiences and patrons. The Lawrence Arts Center could not keep going without you, so we want to thank you. Thank you for your support and willingness to participate either virtually or in-person as an audience member, caregiver, student, teacher or patron. You are why we keep going. We are all in this together, and could not do it without each other. As we continue to find new and better ways to connect, please consider adding your support to ensure the Lawrence Arts Center not only survives, but continues to thrive. We invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy this timeless classic in our very own River City. — Elizabeth Sullivan

GHOSTS OF SEGREGATION O N E X H I B I T AT T H E L AW R E N C E A R T S C E N T E R THROUGH DECEMBER 12

Photographer Richard Frishman explores the lingering presence of segregation, slavery and institutional racism hidden in everyday American architecture. From the New Orleans Slave Exchange and “colored entrances” at movie theatres to the abandoned Negro Nursing School in Houston, Frishman’s photographs show how our surroundings bear witness to history, reminding us where we have been, where we are now, and crucially asking, “Where do we go from here?” While the images in this exhibition are anchored to American history, viewers can find information on how to elevate awareness and spark honest conversations about racism. For full details on related programming during this exhibition – including talks, films, and more – please visit lawrenceartscenter.org. IMAGE: detail from The Black Eden, Idlewild, Michigan, 2019

The Ghosts of Segregation traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions, Pasadena, California. Funding for this program is provided by Humanities Kansas, a nonprofit cultural organization connecting communities with history, traditions, and ideas to streghthen civic life.

Samaria Fleig (STAGE MANAGER/PRODUCTION MANAGER) graduated from Emporia State University with her BFA and has found her home here in Lawrence. She loves all areas of the theatre both on and off the stage: performance, scenic design, lighting design, and stage management. She spent five years in California working with Coast Kids Theatre, New Vision Theatre Group, and the Star Theatre Company. She is very proud of the work she’s been able to do with young theatre technicians here at the Lawrence Arts Center and looks forward to creating more magic in the future. Ben Knight (SOUND ENGINEER) is a Toronto-born musician and sound engineer rooted in Lawrence with a passion for education and public health. His work on touring productions has led him to multiple arts centers across the country including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and SFJAZZ; as well as arts centers in Australia, Canada, Chile, China, England, Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, and United Arab Emirates. He currently spends the majority of his time at home with his partner, Philip. Paul W. Popiel (CONDUCTOR) is the Director of Bands at the University of Kansas, only the seventh person to hold this position in the band’s storied 125-year history. Dr. Popiel conducts the KU Wind Ensemble, directs the graduate program in wind conducting, and guides all aspects of the university band program. His previous appointments include the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and Oklahoma State University. He also enjoyed six years teaching in the public schools of Texas and Michigan. Popiel’s Carnegie Hall debut in 2013 was heralded by The New York Times, “The ensemble, conducted by Paul W. Popiel, performed with polish, assurance and copious spirit, eliciting a rousing ovation,” while New York’s Feast of Music said, “Give credit to Popiel, a strong advocate for new music, who went for broke, succeeding in showing us that there is, in fact, real, adventurous music being made over on the other side of the rainbow.” Popiel has performed and lectured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. He has several highly acclaimed performance and production credits for CDs on the Klavier, Naxos, Ecstatic, Summit, and Mark Custom labels. Popiel is a contributing author to several volumes

of the renowned series, Teaching Music through Performance in Band, as well as the journal Alta Musica. In 2013, Popiel was elected to the membership of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, known for the Grammy Awards. He holds degrees from Truman State University, the University of Notre Dame, and Michigan State University. A recipient of a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship, he also earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Twentieth-Century Music at the University of Bristol, England. Hanah Glimpse (COSTUME DESIGNER) was born in Breese, Illinois in 1999. A year later, her younger brother was born and her family moved to Phoenix, Az., where she lived for 14 years before returning to the Midwest. During her time in Arizona she began her dive into sewing and textile, inspired by the cosplay and comic book community. She took her first sewing class when she and her family moved to Kansas City, Kan., as she started her freshman year at Sumner Academy of Arts and Science. There she began to assist in theatre productions as both costume lead and occasional actress. Being one of the only few people who knew how to sew at her high school, she became a reliable resource for show fixes and even repairing uniforms. Having grown more interested in the stage and specifically creating costumes, Hanah pursued Theatre Design at the University of Kansas. She has spent the past four years on crews, assisting and designing for various productions. She was previously the assistant costume designer for KU Opera’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Benjamin Britten, and costume designer for the planned KU Theatre and Dance 2020 production of Indecent by Paula Vogel.
