Great social justice theatre master Augusto Boal said, “Theatre is the art of looking at ourselves. ” The pandemic has made it clear that live theatre heals. Theatre reminds us what it means to be human and gives us the drive to keep going. The Lawrence Arts Center could not keep going without you, so we want to thank you. Matt Bell (MUSICIAN- PERCUSSION) is a graduate of Washburn University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance. As a multi-instrumentalist he likes to stay well-rounded by playing all genres of music. In his professional career he has traveled throughout the United States and Europe performing at concerts, ceremonies, weddings, and festivals, and has played with renowned musicians including Jens Lindemann, Wycliffe Gordon, and others. He is proud to be a regular musician for the Lawrence Arts Center, Topeka Civic and Helen Hocker theaters, as well as Washburn University’s theater program. He works professionally as a landscape designer, and also does freelance work including construction/carpentry, personal training and animal care. When he’s not working he likes to spend time at the gym, work on projects, hang out with friends, or just love on his two sweet kitties. Rachel Cross (MUSICAL DIRECTOR) is a Midwest-based singer, actor, harpist, voice teacher, and musical director. During her multi-year residency in the Kansas City area, she maintains a busy voice and harp studio, apprentices at Theater for Young America: Opera-to-Go edition, and looks forward to performing live again very soon. She is currently teaching music to young people at the Lawrence Arts Center, Theater for Young America, the ChicagoKids Company, and The Chicago Public Library. Her favorite pre-pandemic credits to date have included the Midwest tour of Warner Bros.’ The Polar Express; the understudy title role in Mary Poppins at the Drury Lane Chicago; Adele in Die Fleudermaus at the Chicago Light Opera; and the understudy role of Skye for the Paw Patrol! Live national tour. She’s thrilled to be involved in live theatre and musical directing for the Arts Center once again! Samaria Fleig (STAGE MANAGER/PRODUCTION MANAGER) graduated from Emporia State University with her BFA and has found her home here in Lawrence. She loves all areas of the theatre both on and off the stage: performance, scenic design, lighting design, and stage management. She spent five years in California working with Coast Kids Theatre, New Vision Theatre Group, and the Star Theatre Company. She is very proud of the work she’s been able to do with young theatre technicians here at the Lawrence Arts Center and looks forward to creating more magic in the future.

Justin Harbaugh (CHOREOGRAPHER) has earned degrees in music from Emporia State University and Kansas State University, and a doctorate in clarinet performance from the University of Kansas. He has choreographed productions for several Kansas high schools, including Emporia and Goddard. Justin has danced onboard Holland America Cruise Line, performed with Music Theatre of Wichita, at The Sands! Casino in Atlantic City, and the Tanzsommer festival in Austria. In addition to being on the dance and theatre faculty at the Lawrence Arts Center, Justin owns and operates his own private clarinet studio. He’d like to thank his parents for their endless love and support, and his amazing dance teacher Kari Kohls-Bruch for instilling a lifelong passion for dance. Lizzy Hill* (ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) is going into her junior year at Free State High School. Outside of theatre at the Arts Center, she is part of orchestra, choir, theatre, and thespian club. She is excited to be working as an intern and has had a lot of fun this summer. She hopes to do it again next summer.
Ben Knight (SOUND ENGINEER) is a Toronto-born musician and sound engineer rooted in Lawrence with a passion for education and public health. His work on touring productions has led him to multiple arts centers across the country including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and SFJAZZ; as well as arts centers in Australia, Canada, Chile, China, England, Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. He currently spends the majority of his time at home with his partner, Philip. Jaron Marcus (PIANIST) is an active pianist and piano teacher in Topeka. He has performed at White Concert Hall with the Washburn University Orchestra as a winner of the 2012 Concert/Aria Competition, and went on to receive his Masters in Piano graduating Summa Cum Laude from Emporia State University, where he served as graduate teaching assistant instructing college courses in piano and music. for musicals in Topeka at Helen Hocker and Topeka Civic Theater, and currently serves as accompanist at Cair Paravel Latin School, and as pianist/keyboardist at Trinity Presbyterian Church. In his spare time, Jaron enjoys time with friends and family, card/ board games, and outdoors. Katherine Marco-Slote* (PROPS MASTER, SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! JR. ) is an incomprehensible being of pure chaos who enjoys drawing, animation, and general mayhem. They have been doing theater for quite a while as an actor, tech, and on one occasion, a writer. Having just finished their junior year of high school, they will soon set off on a grand quest to find their purpose in life. Or they might just take a nap. Tevin Mershon* (ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! JR) has been a theatre technician in shows at the Lawrence Arts Center and Free State High School for the last four years. Since 2018, he has been a youth theatre intern at the Lawrence Arts Center. Tevin’s aspirations include being a theatre carpenter, and he is looking forward to studying theatre at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., in the fall. Jasper Mumford* (ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER) is thrilled to be assisting with this Summer Youth Theatre production of Schoolhouse Rock Live! As a Lawrence native and participant of Summer Youth Theatre for the past 10 years, he’s enjoying the opportunity to be an intern assistant stage manager for these younger artists. Jasper is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Jasper will complete his final year of Summer Youth Theater in Little Shop of Horrors. Amelia Osborn* (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR) is a recent graduate of Free State High School where she was involved in the choral, orchestral, and theatre programs. At the Lawrence Arts Center, Amelia has participated in the Summer Youth Theatre Leadership
Program for the past four years, she was a member of PLAY12, the Lawrence Arts Center’s youth performance company, and is a technical theatre staff member. During the summer of 2020, Amelia competed in the Virtual International Thespian Festival in the stage management division where she received a Superior Rating with her work from the Lawrence Arts Center’s production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka. Adrian Rees (MUSICIAN- GUITAR) earned a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Kansas in 2006. He resides in Lawrence, where he gives music lessons for guitar and bass guitar at Richard’s Music Company. In 2009, he created River City Rock Camp, a unique community-based music education program for young rock musicians. He has composed music for a variety of youth theatre productions at the Lawrence Arts Center including Hamlet and Zombies, Jason and the Argonauts and Cinderella. In addition, he composed music for The Pied Piper of Hamelin, an original retelling of the classic fairy tale by Ric Averill. Rees has been an active musician for nearly 20 years in the Lawrence and Kansas City areas. Elizabeth Sullivan (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR/DIRECTOR) has an MFA in Theatre for Youth and K-12 teaching certification from Arizona State University. She is a community-based artist, teaching artist, director, and performer. Elizabeth acted with The Seem-To-Be Players, a nationally touring children’s theatre troupe. She served as the choreographer, lead facilitator, and actor for MADE Garden, an interactive art and play installation for young children at Mesa Art Center’s SPARK! Festival for Creativity. She worked as Asphalt Art’s Resident Artist at Phoenix’s Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, where she led homeless youth in poetry, spoken word, drama, performance, and digital storytelling. Recently she directed, facilitated, and performed in Lawrence Arts Center’s production of Rethink: I Am a Veteran, an original storytelling project focused on women veterans, as well as directing The Snow Queen.
Morey Sullivan (MUSICIAN- BASS) has been in the music/ theatre/entertainment world from day one. His dad had radio shows in NYC, Europe and Kansas City. Morey began playing with professional musicians at age 13. He worked with Hall of Fame vocalist Hank Thompson as his band leader and bassist for more than 25 years. Morey continues to lead the award-winning Brazos Valley Boys western swing/jazz band, which released a CD earlier this year. Morey belongs to several music halls of fame around the U.S. including Washington State, Sacramento, Calif., Oklahoma, and Texas. He will be inducted to Kansas Music Hall of Fame in July. Morey is married to Dorrie Sullivan, a Lawrence potter and artist. Morey has two wonderful adult children, Elizabeth and John, and three beautiful grandchildren, Asher, Naomi, and Evan. Morey believes family and music are the most important things in life. Leah Towle (COSTUME DESIGNER) is a teaching artist focused on activating students’ artistry, encouraging exploration and choice-making, and integrating science and theater. She has designed costumes for productions at the Lawrence Arts Center, Perry-Lecompton High School, and Bethel College. She has training in stage combat through the Society of American Fight Directors and Dueling Arts International, and holds a BA in Elementary Education from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. At the Lawrence Arts Center, Leah teaches youth and adult theater classes and works on productions throughout the year. Elliot Yochim (CO-TECHNICAL DIRECTOR/SCENIC DESIGNER/ TECH TEACHER) has a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Kansas studying Theatre Design. Theatre has been a passion of his since early childhood when he participated in Summer Youth Theatre as a student himself.
